We consider four-dimensional, Riemannian, Ricci-flat metrics for which one or other of the self-dual or anti-self-dual Weyl tensors is type-D. Such metrics always have a valence-2 Killing spinor, and therefore a Hermitian structure and at least one Killing vector. We rederive the results of Przanowski and collaborators, that these metrics can all be given in terms of a solution of the $SU(\infty)$-Toda field equation, and show that, when there is a second Killing vector commuting with the first, the method of Ward can be applied to show that the metrics can also be given in terms of an axisymmetric solution of the flat three-dimensional Laplacian. Thus in particular the field equations linearise.
As a corollary, we show that the same technique linearises the field equations for a four-dimensional Einstein metric with anti-self-dual Weyl tensor and two commuting symmetries.
We reduce the Einstein equations with non-zero scalar curvature and one-sided type-D Weyl tensor, excluding the Kähler-Einstein case, to a modified but not integrable Toda equation.
Some examples of the constructions are given.
In this paper we investigate the problem of non-analytic embeddings of Lorentzian manifolds in Ricci-flat semi-Riemannian spaces. In order to do this, we first review some relevant results in the area, and then motivate both the mathematical and physical interest in this problem. We show that any $n$-dimensional compact Lorentzian manifold $(M^{n},g)$, with $g$ in the Sobolev space $H_{s+3}$, $s>\frac{n}{2}$, admits an isometric embedding in an $(2n+2)$-dimensional Ricci-flat semi-Riemannian manifold. The sharpest result available for this type of embeddings, in the general setting, comes as a…
Some examples of ten-dimensional vacuum Einstein spaces made up on basis of four-dimensional Ricci-flat spaces and six-dimensional Ricci-flat spaces defined by solutions of the Sin-Gordon equation are constructed. The properties of geodesics for such type of the spaces are discussed
We describe a framework for constructing the Ricci-flat metrics on the total space of the canonical bundle over $\mathbb{CP}^2 \# \overline{\mathbb{CP}^2}$ (the del Pezzo surface of rank one). We construct explicitly the first-order deformation of the so-called `orthotoric metric' on this manifold. We also show that the deformation of the corresponding conformal Killing-Yano form does not exist.
The present work extends the application of a modified Ricci flow equation to an asymptotically non flat space, namely Marder's cylindrially symmetric space. It is found that the flow equation has a solution at least in a particular case.
We discuss the correspondence between the DGP brane cosmology and 5D Ricci-flat cosmology by letting their metrics equal each other. By this correspondence, a specific geometrical property of the arbitrary integral constant I in DGP metric is given and it is related to the curvature of 5D bulk. At the same time, the relation of arbitrary functions $μ$ and $ν$ in a class of Ricci-flat solutions is obtained from DGP brane metric.
We employ a theorem due to Campbell to build some simple 4-dimensional cosmological models which originate from solutions describing waves propagating along the extra-dimension of a 5-dimensional Ricci-flat space. The dimensional reduction is performed in the Jordan frame according to the induced-matter theory of Wesson.
The examples of ten-dimensional vacuum Einstein spaces composed of four-dimensional Einstein spaces and six-dimensional Ricci-flat base space defined by the solutions of the Korteveg de-Vries equation are constructed.
A model universe is proposed in the framework of 5-dimensional noncompact Kaluza-Klein cosmology which is not Ricci flat. The 4D part as the Robertson-Walker metric is coupled to conventional perfect fluid, and its extra-dimensional part is coupled to a dark pressure through a scalar field. It is shown that neither early inflation nor current acceleration of the 4D universe would happen if the non-vacuum states of the scalar field would contribute to 4D cosmology.
In the present paper we study a conformally flat generalized Ricci recurrent perfect fluid spacetime with constant Ricci scalar as a solution of modified $F(R)$-gravity theory. We show that a Robertson-Walker spacetime is generalized Ricci Recurrent if and only if it is Ricci symmetric. The perfect fluid type matter is shown to have EoS $ω=-1$. Some energy conditions are analyzed with couple of popular toy models of $F(R)$-gravity, like $F(R)= R+αR^m $ where $α, m$ are constants and $ F(R)=R+βRlnR $ where $β$ is constant. In harmony with the recent observational studies of accelerated expansio…
It is well-known that there exists a Hawking-Page phase transition between a spherical AdS black hole and a thermal AdS space. The phase transition does not happen between a Ricci flat AdS black hole whose horizon is a Ricci flat space and a thermal AdS space in the Poincare coordinates. However, the Hawking-Page phase transition occurs between a Ricci flat AdS black hole and an AdS soliton if at least one of horizon coordinates for the Ricci flat black hole is compact. We show a similar phase transition betwen the Ricci flat black holes and deformed AdS solitons in the Gauss-Bonnet gravity an…
D-dimensional cosmological model describing the evolution of a multicomponent perfect fluid with variable barotropic parameters in n Ricci-flat spaces is investigated. The equations of motion are integrated for the case, when each component possesses an isotropic pressure with respect to all spaces. Exact solutions are presented in the Kasner-like form. Some explicit examples are given: 4-dimensional model with an isotropic accelerated expansion at late times and (4+d)-dimensional model describing a compactification of extra dimensions.
A longstanding question in superstring/$M$ theory is does it predict supersymmetry below the string scale? We formulate and discuss a necessary condition for this to be true; this is the mathematical conjecture that all stable, compact Ricci flat manifolds have special holonomy in dimensions below eleven. Almost equivalent is the proposal that the landscape of all geometric, stable, string/$M$ theory compactifications to Minkowski spacetime (at leading order) are supersymmetric. For simply connected manifolds, we collect together a number of physically relevant mathematical results, emphasisin…
We present a comprehensive analysis of the AdS/Ricci-flat correspondence, a map between a class of asymptotically locally AdS spacetimes and a class of Ricci-flat spacetimes. We provide a detailed derivation of the map, discuss a number of extensions and apply it to a number of important examples, such as AdS on a torus, AdS black branes and fluids/gravity metrics. In particular, the correspondence links the hydrodynamic regime of asymptotically flat black $p$-branes or the Rindler fluid with that of AdS. It implies that this class of Ricci-flat spacetimes inherits from AdS a generalized confo…
Generalized differential forms are used in discussions of metric geometries and Einstein's vacuum field equations. Cartan's structure equations are generalized and applied. In particular flat generalized connections are associated with any metric. Einstein's vacuum field equations and their Lorentzian four-metric solutions are considered from a novel point of view. It is shown how particular flat generalized connections and geometries can encode such Ricci flat metrics.
The Schwarzschild solution is generalized for the case of n internal Ricci-flat spaces. It is shown that in the four-dimensional section of the metric a horizon exists only when the internal space scale factors are constant. The scalar-vacuum generalization of the solution is also presented. [This paper is the English translation of the part of Chapter. 2.4 of the author's PhD dissertation (Moscow, 1989).]
A generalization of the Tangherlini solution for the case of n internal Ricci-flat spaces is obtained. It is shown that in the (2+d)-dimensional section a horizon exists only in the trivial case when the internal-space factors are constant. The p-adic analog of the solution is also considered.
Partially supersymmetric intersecting (non-marginal) composite M-brane solutions defined on the product of Ricci-flat manifolds M_0 x M_1 x ... x M_n in D= 11 supergravity are considered and formulae for fractional numbers of unbroken supersymmetries are derived for the following configurations of branes: M2 - M2, M2 - M5, M5 - M5 and M2 - M2 - M2. Certain examples of partially supersymmetric configurations are presented.
Ricci-flat metrics of the ultrahyperbolic signature which enjoy the l-conformal Galilei symmetry are constructed. They involve the AdS_2-metric in a way similar to the near horizon black hole geometries. The associated geodesic equations are shown to describe a second order dynamical system for which the acceleration generators are functionally independent.
Ricci-flat spacetimes of signature (2,q) with q=2,3,4 are constructed which admit irreducible Killing tensors of rank-3 or rank-4. The construction relies upon the Eisenhart lift applied to Drach's two-dimensional integrable systems which is followed by the oxidation with respect to free parameters. In four dimensions, some of our solutions are anti-self-dual.
A family of generalized $S$-brane solutions with orthogonal intersection rules and $n$ Ricci-flat factor spaces in the theory with several scalar fields and antisymmetric forms is considered. Two subclasses of solutions with power-law and exponential behaviour of scale factors are singled out. These subclasses contain sub-families of solutions with accelerated expansion of certain factor spaces. The solutions depend on charge densities of branes, their dimensions and intersections, dilatonic couplings and the number of dilatonic fields.
We generalize the previously studied cosmological solutions in D-dimensional gravity with an antisymmetric (p+2)-form to the case when the spatial part of the metric is Ricci-flat rather than flat. These generalized solutions are characterized by a parallel self-dual or anti-self-dual charge density form Q of rank 2m and satisfy the condition Q^2 >0. As with the previous flat-space case, these electric, S-brane solutions only exist when D=4m+1 = 5, 9, 13, ... and p= 2m -1 = 1, 3, 5, .... We further generalize these solutions by adding Ricci-flat factor-spaces which are not covered by branes.
Using techniques of supersymmetric gauge theories, we present the Ricci-flat metrics on non-compact Kahler manifolds whose conical singularity is repaired by the Hermitian symmetric space. These manifolds can be identified as the complex line bundles over the Hermitian symmetric spaces. Each of the metrics contains a resolution parameter which controls the size of these base manifolds, and the conical singularity appears when the parameter vanishes.
