We present a comprehensive analysis of the AdS/Ricci-flat correspondence, a map between a class of asymptotically locally AdS spacetimes and a class of Ricci-flat spacetimes. We provide a detailed derivation of the map, discuss a number of extensions and apply it to a number of important examples, such as AdS on a torus, AdS black branes and fluids/gravity metrics. In particular, the correspondence links the hydrodynamic regime of asymptotically flat black $p$-branes or the Rindler fluid with that of AdS. It implies that this class of Ricci-flat spacetimes inherits from AdS a generalized conformal symmetry and has a holographic structure. We initiate the discussion of holography by analyzing how the map acts on boundary conditions and holographic 2-point functions.
It is well-known that there exists a Hawking-Page phase transition between a spherical AdS black hole and a thermal AdS space. The phase transition does not happen between a Ricci flat AdS black hole whose horizon is a Ricci flat space and a thermal AdS space in the Poincare coordinates. However, the Hawking-Page phase transition occurs between a Ricci flat AdS black hole and an AdS soliton if at least one of horizon coordinates for the Ricci flat black hole is compact. We show a similar phase transition betwen the Ricci flat black holes and deformed AdS solitons in the Gauss-Bonnet gravity an…
Following the recent observation that the Ricci flow and the infinite distance swampland conjecture are closely related to each other, we will investigate in this paper geometric flow equations for AdS space-time geometries. First, we consider the so called Yamabe and Ricci-Bourguignon flows and we show that these two flows - in contrast to the Ricci flow - lead to infinite distance fixed points for product spaces like $AdS_d\times S^p$, where $AdS_d$ denotes d-dimensional AdS space and $S^p$ corresponds to a p-dimensional sphere. Second, we consider black hole geometries in AdS space time geo…
We establish an explicit correspondence of Einstein gravity on the squashed spheres that are the $U(1)$ bundles over $\mathbb{CP}^m$ to the Kaluza-Klein AdS gravity on the tori. This allows us to map the Ricci-flat Kerr metrics in odd dimensions with all equal angular momenta to charged Kaluza-Klein AdS black holes that can be lifted to become singly rotating M-branes and D3-branes. Furthermore, we find maps between Ricci-flat gravitational instantons to the AdS domain walls. In particular the supersymmetric bolt instantons correspond to domain walls that can be interpreted as distributed M-br…
We classify solutions to Einstein's equations in AdS with Ricci-flat boundary metric and with covariantly constant boundary stress tensor, which in general is not diagonalizable, i.e. it does not admit a reference frame. New solutions are found, and in the context of the AdS/CFT duality they should describe a boundary QFT in certain non-equilibrium steady states. Further imposing the absence of scalar curvature singularities leads to a subset of metrics that can be seen as null deformations of AdS or of the AdS soliton. We also outline the procedure of solving the equations when a scalar is co…
We show that for every asymptotically AdS solution compactified on a torus there is a corresponding Ricci-flat solution obtained by replacing the torus by a sphere, performing a Weyl rescaling of the metric and appropriately analytically continuing the dimension of the torus/sphere (as in generalized dimensional reduction). In particular, it maps Minkowski spacetime to AdS on a torus, the holographic stress energy tensor of AdS to the stress energy tensor due to a brane localized in the interior of spacetime and AdS black branes to (asymptotically flat) Schwarzschild black branes. Applying it …
We provide a class of nondilatonic solutions to the NS-NS sector of string theory. The solutions consist of products of Ricci-parallelizable spaces with adjusted radii. A representative of this class, AdS_3 x S^7, is presented in detail. Some comments on possible brane connections are made.
We show that the recently found AdS-plane and AdS-spherical wave solutions of quadratic curvature gravity also solve the most general higher derivative theory in D-dimensions. More generally, we show that the field equations of such theories reduce to an equation linear in the Ricci tensor for Kerr-Schild spacetimes having type-N Weyl and traceless Ricci tensors.
The perturbative double copy is by now a highly established correspondence between gravity and gauge theories. Non-perturbatively, information ranging from classical solutions to topological quantities on both sides have been related to each other via the double copy correspondence. In this paper, we add another result, where we show that the single copy of the Ricci flow is the Yang-Mills flow on the space of connections of a principal $\text{U}(1)$-bundle.
A special class of higher curvature theories of gravity, Ricci Cubic Gravity (RCG), in general d dimensional space-time has been investigated in this paper. We have used two different approaches, the linearized equations of motion and auxiliary field formalism to study the massive and massless graviton propagating modes of the AdS background. Using the auxiliary field formalism, we have found the renormalized boundary stress tensor to compute the mass of Schwarzschild AdS and Lifshitz black holes in RCG theory.
In this paper, we reconsider the energy and tension laws of the Ricci flat black hole by taking the contribution of the tension term into account. After this considering and inspired by the interchange symmetry between the Ricci flat black hole and the AdS soliton solution which arises from the double analytic continuation of the time and compact spatial direction, we find out the analogy of the energy and tension laws of the AdS soliton solution. Moreover, we also investigate the energy and tension laws of the boosted Ricci flat black hole, and discuss the boosted AdS soliton solution. Howeve…
The quantization of a scalar field in AdS leads to two kinds of normalizable modes, usually called regular and irregular modes. The regular one is easily taken into account in the standard prescription for the AdS/CFT correspondence. The irregular mode requires a modified prescription which we argue is not completely satisfactory. We discuss an alternative quantization in AdS which incorporates boundary terms in a natural way. Within this quantization scheme we present an improved prescription for the AdS/CFT correspondence which can be applied to both, regular and irregular modes. Boundary co…
We studied the canonical structure of 2D $F(R)$ gravity. Its equivalence with Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity is demonstrated when no matter presents. Then, due to AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ correspondence, such $F(R)$ gravity is equivalent to the Sachdev-Ye--Kitaev models. The singular $D\to 2$ limit of $F(R)$ gravity is also studied. It is shown that in such a limit AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ correspondence is not realized.
We establish an exact connection between the Choptuik scaling parameter for the three-dimensional BTZ black hole, and the imaginary part of the quasinormal frequencies for scalar perturbations. Via the AdS/CFT correspondence, this leads to an interpretation of Choptuik scaling in terms of the timescale for return to equilibrium of the dual conformal field theory.
The AdS/Ricci-flat (AdS/RF) correspondence is a map between families of asymptotically locally AdS solutions on a torus and families of asymptotically flat spacetimes on a sphere. The aim of this work is to perturbatively extend this map to general AdS and asymptotically flat solutions. A prime application for such map would be the development of holography for Minkowski spacetime. In this paper we perform a Kaluza-Klein (KK) reduction of AdS on a torus and of Minkowski on a sphere, keeping all massive KK modes. Such computation is interesting on its own, as there are relatively few examples o…
We extend the correspondence between metric-affine Ricci-Based Gravity theories and General Relativity (GR) to the case in which the matter sector is represented by linear and nonlinear electromagnetic fields. This complements previous studies focused on fluids and scalar fields. We establish the general algorithm that relates the matter fields in the GR and RBG frames and consider some applications. In particular, we find that the so-called Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity theory coupled to Maxwell electromagnetism is in direct correspondence with GR coupled to Born-Infeld electromagnet…
This paper reviews the concepts and assumptions of rigid flow in relativistic fluid mech- anics, particularly the generalisation of the classical Herglotz-Noether theorem, that are relevant to the fluid approximation of the AdS-CFT dual of large rotating black-holes used by Bhattacharyya et al. We then give a brief outline of the recently found proof the generalised theorem.
We consider the $AdS_5$ solution deformed by a non-constant dilaton interpolating between the standard AdS (UV region) and flat boundary background (IR region). We show that this dilatonic solution can be generalized to the case of a non-flat boundaries provided that the metric of the boundaries satisfies the vacuum Einstein field equations. As an example, we describe the case when the four-dimensional boundaries represent the Kerr space-time.
When two-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space (AdS_2) is endowed with a non-constant dilaton the origin of the central charge in the Virasoro algebra generating the asymptotic symmetries of AdS_2 can be traced back to the breaking of the SL(2,R) isometry group of AdS_2. We use this fact to clarify some controversial results appeared in the literature about the value of the central charge in these models.
We find the expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor in the CFT corresponding to a moving black hole in AdS. Boosting the black hole to the speed of light, keeping the total energy fixed, yields a gravitational shock wave in AdS. The analogous procedure on the field theory side leads to ``light cone'' states, i.e., states with energy-momentum tensor localized on the light cone. The correspondence between the gravitational shock wave and these light cone states provides a useful tool for testing causality. We show, in several examples, how the CFT reproduces the causal relations in AdS.
We consider Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG), which is three dimensional general relativity with a cosmological constant and a gravitational Chern-Simons term. When the cosmological constant is negative the theory has two potential vacuum solutions: Anti-de Sitter space and Warped Anti-de Sitter space. The theory also contains a massive graviton state which renders these solutions unstable for certain values of the parameters and boundary conditions. We study the decay of these solutions due to the condensation of the massive graviton mode using Ricci-Cotton flow, which is the appropriate g…
A low energy iteration scheme to study nonlinear gravity in the brane world is developed. As a result, we obtain the brane world effective action at low energies. The relation between the geometrical approach and the approach using the AdS/CFT correspondence is also clarified. In particular, we find generalized dark radiation as homogeneous solutions in our iteration scheme. Moreover, the precise correspondence between the bulk geometry and the brane effective action is established, which gives a holographic view of the brane world.
Lovelock theory is the natural extension of general relativity to higher dimensions. It can be also thought of as a toy model for ghost-free higher curvature corrections in gravitational theories. It admits a family of AdS vacua, which provides an appealing arena to explore different holographic aspects in a broader setup within the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We will elaborate on these features and review previous work concerning the constraints that Lovelock theory entails on the CFT parameters when imposing conditions like unitarity, positivity of the energy or causality.

We review and extend recent attempts to find a precise relation between extremal black hole entropy and degeneracy of microstates using AdS_2/CFT_1 correspondence. Our analysis leads to a specific relation between degeneracy of black hole microstates and an appropriately defined partition function of string theory on the near horizon geometry, -- named the quantum entropy function. In the classical limit this reduces to the usual relation between statistical entropy and Wald entropy.
We study phase transition between electrically charged Ricci-flat black holes and AdS soliton spacetime of Horowitz and Myers in five dimensions. Boundary topology for both of them is $S^1 \times S^1 \times R^2$. We consider Reissner-Nordstrom black hole and R-charged black holes and find that phase transition of these black holes to AdS soliton spacetime depends on the relative size of two boundary circles. We also perform the stability analysis for these black holes. In order to use the AdS/CFT correspondence, we work in the grand canonical ensemble.
The curvature of a higher spin potential as constructed in a previous article of the same authors arXiv:0705.3528 is applied to the analysis of the linearized trace anomaly obtained from the quadratic part of the effective action for a conformally coupled scalar with linearized interaction with the external higher spin fields arXiv:hep-th/0602067. The spin is restricted to four to profit from technical simplifications but without reducing the problem in principle. The issue includes the calculation of all Ricci tensors as multiple traces of the curvature, the derivation of all primary and seco…
We calculate the scalar quasinormal modes of warped $AdS_3$ black holes analytically. We find that in general they are not in agreement with the prediction of the usual AdS/CFT correspondence. Nevertheless, for the black hole not deviating far from BTZ black hole, the quasinormal frequencies are still well consistent with AdS/CFT correspondence.
We determine the Killing spinors for a class of magnetic brane solutions with Minkowski worldvolume of the theory of AdS Einstein Maxwell theories in d dimensions. We also obtain curved magnetic brane solutions with Ricci-flat worldvolumes. If we demand that the curved brane solution admits Killing spinors, then its worldvolume must admit parallel spinors. Classes of Ricci-flat worldvolumes admitting parallel spinors are discussed.
We discuss classical gravitational aspects of the AdS/CFT correspondence, with the aim of obtaining a rigorous (mathematical) understanding of the semi-classical limit of the gravitational partition function. The paper surveys recent progress in the area, together with a selection of new results and open problems.
We compute the boundary stress-energies of time-dependent asymptotically AdS spacetimes in 5 and 7 dimensions, and find that their traces are equal to the respective 4 and 6 dimensional field-theoretic trace anomalies. This provides good supporting evidence in favour of the AdS/CFT correspondence in time-dependent backgrounds.
The loop expansion of the effective action is used to evaluate quantum corrections to a scalar field theory (massive phi^4 model) on AdS. We evaluate one loop corrections and show that they preserve conformal invariance of the boundary theory as conjectured by AdS/CFT correspondence.
The AdS/CFT correspondence is established for the AdS_3 space compactified on a solid torus with the CFT field on the boundary. Correlation functions that correspond to the bulk theory at finite temperature are obtained in the regularization a'la Gubser, Klebanov, and Polyakov. The BTZ black hole solutions in AdS_3 are T-dual to the solution in the AdS_3 space without singularity.
We expand on Klebanov and Witten's recent proposal for formulating the AdS/CFT correspondence using irregular boundary conditions. The proposal is shown to be correct to any order in perturbation theory.
We show some implications of the approach to AdS/CFT correspondence based on Type IIB string in the flat space-time with D3-branes proposed in our previous paper. We discuss a correspondence for high energy scattering amplitudes of N=4 super-Yang-Mills proposed recently. We also discuss AdS/CFT correspondence at finite temperature. Our approach provides clear understanding of these issues.
We calculate the correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula for five dimensional AdS-Schwarzschild black holes due to thermodynamic fluctuations. The result is then compared with the boundary gauge theory entropy corrections via AdS/CFT correspondence. We then further generalise our analysis for the rotating black hole in five dimensional AdS space.
We study Maldacena's conjecture and the AdS/SYM correspondence on the Coulomb branch. Several interesting aspects of this conjectured AdS/SYM correspondence on the Coulomb branch are pointed out and clarified.
By taking the interacting spinor-scalar theory on the $AdS_{d+1}$ space we calculate the boundary CFT correlation functions using AdS/CFT correspondence.
Let $M$ be a complete Einstein manifold of negative curvature, and assume that (as in the AdS/CFT correspondence) it has a Penrose compactification with a conformal boundary $N$ of positive scalar curvature. We show that under these conditions, $H_n(M;Z)=0$ and in particular $N$ must be connected. These results resolve some puzzles concerning the AdS/CFT correspondence.
Light cone gauge manifestly supersymmetric formulations of type IIB 10-dimensional supergravity in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ background and related boundary conformal field theory representations are developed. A precise correspondence between the bulk fields of IIB supergravity and the boundary operators is established. The formulations are given entirely in terms of light cone scalar superfields, allowing us to treat all component fields on an equal footing.
We analyse the leading logarithmic singularities in direct and crossed channel limit of the four-point functions in dilaton-axion sector of type IIB supergravity on $AdS_{5}$ in AdS/CFT correspondence. Logarithms do not cancel in the full correlator in both channels.
Using the AdS-CFT correspondence we calculate the two point function of CFT energy momentum tensors. The AdS gravitons are considered by explicitly solving the Dirichlet boundary value problem for $x_0=ε$. We consider this treatment as complementary to existing work, with which we make contact.
We study real-time correlators in the warped AdS/CFT correspondence. We apply the prescription used in the usual AdS/CFT correspondence and obtain the retarded Green's functions for the scalar and vector fields in the spacelike warped and the null warped black hole backgrounds. We find that the retarded Green's functions and the cross sections are well consistent with the predictions from dual CFT. Our results not only support strongly the conjectured warped AdS/CFT correspondence, but also show that the usual relativistic AdS/CFT prescription of obtaining the real-time correlators remain effe…
Construction of a five dimensional conformal supergravity (D=5 CSG) is attempted by applying the AdS/CFT correspondence to the F(4) AdS supergravity in six dimensions. As a first step, local transformation laws of D=5 CSG have been established, from which the Weyl weights of the various fields in D=5 can be predicted.
Holographic Renormalization Group (RG) in nine dimensions is considered. The d8 holographic conformal anomaly is found. It should correspond to d8 CFT in AdS_9/CFT_8 correspondence. The comparison of holographic and QFT anomalies in d8 de Sitter space is done. It may give the indication for rigorous AdS_9/CFT_8 correspondence proposal.
We discuss how the variational principle can be used as a criterion for choosing, among scalar field actions implying the same equation of motion, the appropriate one for the AdS/CFT correspondence.
We discuss dilatonic gravity (bulk theory) from the point of view of (generalized) AdS/CFT correspondence. Self-consistent dilatonic background is considered. It may be understood as two boundaries space where AdS boundary appears as infinite boundary and new (singular) boundary occurs at short distances. The two-point correlation function and conformal dimension for minimal and dilaton coupled scalar are found. Even for minimal scalar, the conformal dimension is found to be different on above two boundaries. Hence, new CFT appears in AdS/CFT correspondence at short distances. AdS/CFT correspo…
Correlation functions of Logarithmic conformal field theory is investigated using the ADS/CFT correspondence and a novel method based on nilpotent weights and 'super fields'. Adding an specific form of interaction, we introduce a perturbative method to calculate the correlation functions.
We will study the AdS/CFT correspondence in an intermediate region between the strong form of this correspondence (string theory on AdS being dual to a boundary CFT), and the weak form of this correspondence (supergravity on AdS being dual to a boundary CFT). We will go beyond the supergravity approximation in the AdS by using the fact that strings have an extended structure. We will also calculate the CFT dual to such string corrections in the bulk, and demonstrate that they are consistent with the strong form of the AdS/CFT correspondence. So, even though the conformal dimensions of both the…
We study two possible prescriptions for AdS/CFT correspondence by means of functional integrals. The considerations are non-perturbative and reveal certain divergencies which turn out to be harmless, in the sense that reflection-positivity and conformal invariance are not destroyed.
A consistent QM/NCG duality is put forward as a model for the AdS^2/CFT_1 correspondence. This is a duality/correspondence between 1) the dAFF conformal quantum mechanics (QM) on the boundary (which is only "quasi-conformal" in the sense that there is neither an SO(1,2)-invariant vacuum state nor there are strictly speaking primary operators), and between 2) the noncommutative geometry of AdS^2_θ in the bulk (which is only "quasi-AdS" in the sense of being only asymptotically AdS^2). The Laplacian operators on noncommutative AdS^2_θ and commutative AdS^2 have the same spectrum and thus their c…
We calculate all components of thermal R-current correlators from AdS/CFT correspondence for non-zero momentum and energy. In zero momentum limit, we find an analytic expression for the components Gxx(Gyy). The dielectric function of strong coupling is also presented and compared with that in weak coupling.
Two kinds of realizations of symmetry on classical domains or the Euclidean version of AdS space are used to study AdS/CFT correspondence. Mass of free particles is defined as an AdS group invariant, the Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations for relativistic particles in the AdS space are set up as a mimic in the case of Minkowskian space. The bulk-boundary propagator on the AdS space is given by the Poisson kernel. Theorems on the Poisson kernel guarantee the existence and sole of the bulk-boundary propagator. The propagator is used to calculate correlators of the theories that live on the boundar…
