Three driving forces control the energy level alignment between transition-metal oxides and organic materials: the chemical interaction between the two materials, the organic electronegativity and the possible space charge layer formed in the oxide. This is illustrated in this letter by analyzing experimentally and theoretically a paradigmatic case, the TiO2(110) / TCNQ interface: due to the chemical interaction between the two materials, the organic electron affinity level is located below the Fermi energy of the n-doped TiO2. Then, one electron is transferred from the oxide to this level and a space charge layer is developed in the oxide inducing an important increase in the interface dipole and in the oxide work function.
Excitons are widely found in semiconductors. In contrast to inorganic-based semiconductors, where the presence of excitons may need special morphonology, like low-dimensional layer structure, the excitons prevailingly exist in molecular organic semiconductors in a three-dimension solid state. The excitons can undergo a charging process to yield another kind of quasiparticles originating from the coupling of excitons and free charges. Herein, we investigated the interaction between excitons and free charges in a representative arylamine-derivative organic semiconductor(NPB), by the time-of-flig…
Defects and their interactions in crystalline solids often underpin material properties and functionality as they are decisive for stability, result in enhanced diffusion, and act as a reservoir of vacancies. Recently, lithium-rich layered oxides have emerged among the leading candidates for the next-generation energy storage cathode material, delivering 50 % excess capacity over commercially used compounds. Oxygen-redox reactions are believed to be responsible for the excess capacity, however, voltage fading has prevented commercialization of these new materials. Despite extensive research th…
We study the influence of polarity on the binding and diffusion of single conjugated organic molecules on the inorganic (10-10) zinc oxide surface by means of all-atom molecular dynamics simulations at room temperature and above. In particular, we consider the effects of partial fluorination of the para-sexiphenyl (p-6P) molecule with chemical modifications of one head group (p-6PF2) or both (symmetric) head and tail (p-6PF4). Quantum-mechanical and classical simulations both result in consistent and highly distinct dipole moments and densities of the fluorinated molecules, which interestingly…
Our research shows that commercially available graphene on quartz modified with rhenium oxide meets the requirements for its use as a conductive and transparent anode in optoelectronic devices. The cluster growth of rhenium oxide enables an increase in the work function of graphene by 1.3 eV up to 5.2 eV, which guarantees an appropriate adjustment to the energy levels of the organic semiconductors used in OLED devices.
Electroluminescence (EL) spectra from hybrid charge transfer excitons at metal oxide/organic type-II heterojunctions exhibit pronounced bias-induced spectral shifts. The reasons for this phenomenon have been discussed controversially and arguments for both electric field-induced effects as well as filling of trap states at the oxide surface have been put forward. Here, we combine the results from EL and photovoltaic measurements to eliminate the disguising effects of the series resistance. For SnOx combined with the conjugated polymer MeLPPP, we find a one-to-one correspondence between the blu…
Surface confined dehalogenation reactions are versatile bottom-up approaches for the synthesis of carbon-based nanostructures with predefined chemical properties. However, for devices generally requiring low conductivity substrates, potential applications are so far severely hampered by the necessity of a metallic surface to catalyze the reactions. In this work we report the synthesis of ordered arrays of poly(p-phenylene) chains on the surface of semiconducting TiO2(110) via a dehalogenative homocoupling of 4,4"-dibromoterphenyl precursors. The supramolecular phase is clearly distinguished fr…
Metal oxide thin-film transistors are fast becoming a ubiquitous technology for application in driving backplanes of organic light-emitting diode displays. Currently all commercial products rely on metal oxides processed via physical vapor deposition methods. Transition to simpler, higher throughput manufacturing methods such as solution-based processes, are currently been explored as cost-effective alternatives. However, developing printable oxide transistors with high carrier mobility and bias-stable operation has proved challenging. Here we show that hybrid multilayer channels composed of a…
Amorphous aluminum oxide Al$_2$O$_3$ (a-Al$_2$O$_3$) layers grown by various deposition techniques contain a significant density of negative charges. In spite of several experimental and theoretical studies, the origin of these charges still remains unclear. We report the results of extensive Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations of native defects - O and Al vacancies and interstitials, as well as H interstitial centers - in different charge states in both crystalline $α$-Al$_2$O$_3$ and in a-Al$_2$O$_3$. The results demonstrate that both the charging process and the energy distribution…
We have demonstrated a high-performance low temperature solution processed electron selective contact consisting of 10 at% antimony doped tin oxide (ATO) and the neutral polymer polyethylenimine (PEI). Inverted organic photovoltaics (OPVs) utilizing ATO/PEI as electron selective contact exhibited high power conversion efficiencies for both the reference P3HT: PCBM and the non-fullerene based P3HT- IDTBR active layer OPV material systems. Importantly it is shown that the proposed ATO/PEI carrier selective contact provides light soaking-free inverted OPVs. Furthermore, by increasing the thicknes…
The performance of solution-processed organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) is often limited by non-uniform contacts. In this work, we introduce Ni-containing solution-processed metal oxide (MO) interfacial layers inserted between indium tin oxide (ITO) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) to improve the bottom electrode contact for OLEDs using the poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) derivative Super-Yellow (SY) as an emission layer. For ITO/Ni-containing MO/PEDOT:PSS bottom electrode structures we show enhanced wetting properties that result in an improved OLE…
Herein, we report an easy, straight forward, and versatile approach to build 0D/2D hybrid nanoparticle/graphene architectures by means of non-covalent chemistry and a modified Layer-by-Layer assembly. Three water soluble perylene diimides were employed to efficiently exfoliate pristine graphite into positively charged few- and multilayer graphene flakes. Further combination of these cationic building blocks with anionic zinc oxide nanoparticles led to the formation of tailor-made hybrid films via electrostatic and van der Waals interactions. These supramolecular hybrid nano-structures were tho…
Organic functionalization of graphene is successfully performed via 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azomethine ylide in the liquid phase. The comparison between 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone and N,N-dimethylformamide as dispersant solvents, and between sonication and homogenization as dispersion techniques, proves N,N-dimethylformamide and homogenization as the most effective choice. The functionalization of graphene nanosheets and reduced graphene oxide is confirmed using different techniques. Among them, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy allows to map the pyrrolidine ring of the azomethine ylide …
We present a computational microscopy analysis (targeted molecular dynamics simulations) of the structure and performance of conductive metal organic framework (MOF) electrodes in supercapacitors with room temperature ionic liquids. The molecular modeling predicts the characteristic shapes of the potential dependence of electrode capacitance, relying on the structure of MOF electrodes and particularly how ions transport and reside in MOFs under polarization. Transmission line model was adopted to characterize the charging dynamics process and build up a bridge to evaluate the capacitive perfor…
Lithium titanium oxide Li$_4$Ti$_5$O$_{12}$ (LTO) is an intriguing anode material promising particularly long lived batteries, due to its remarkable phase stability during (dis)charging of the cell. However, its usage is limited by its low intrinsic electronic conductivity. Introducing oxygen vacancies can be one method to overcome this drawback, possibly by altering the charge carrier transport mechanism. We use Hubbard corrected density-functional theory (DFT+U) to show that polaronic states in combination with a possible hopping mechanism can play a crucial role in the experimentally observ…
Metal-mediated exfoliation has been demonstrated as a promising approach for obtaining large-area flakes of 2D materials to fabricate prototypical nanoelectronics. However, several processing challenges related to organic contamination at the interfaces of the 2D material and the gate oxide must be overcome to realize robust devices with high yield. Here, we demonstrate an optimized process to realize high-performance field-effect transistor (FET) arrays from large-area (~5000 um2) monolayer MoS2 with a yield of 85 %. A central element of this process is an exposed material forming gas anneal …

The development of novel functional materials in experimental labs combined with computer-based compound simulation brings the vision of materials design on a microscopic scale continuously closer to reality. For many applications interface and surface phenomena rather than bulk properties are key. One of the most fundamental qualities of a material-vacuum interface is the energy required to transfer an electron across this boundary, i.e. the work function. It is a crucial parameter for numerous applications, including organic electronics, field electron emitters, and thermionic energy convert…
We study the behavior of hydrated graphite oxide (GO) at high temperatures using thermally accelerated molecular dynamics simulations based on ab initio density functional theory. Our results suggest that GO, a viable candidate for water treatment and desalination membranes, is more heat resilient than currently used organic materials. The system we consider to represent important aspects of thermal processes in highly disordered GO is a hydrated GO bilayer in vacuum. Our study provides microscopic insight into reactions involving water and functional epoxy-O and OH-groups bonded to graphene l…
The ideal band gap for a photovoltaic active layer for the solar spectrum is around 1.3 eV. However oxides with such values are rare. One of the most studied oxides to date as a photovoltaic active layer is the cuprous oxide Cu2O. Its band gap is around 2.1 eV and is therefore not ideal for the solar spectrum. Power Conversion Efficiency generally do not exceed 4%. In this paper we propose to study an emerging type of solar cell that is based on ferroelectricity. In this type of solar cell, a p-n junction is not necessarily required, unlike conventional solar cells. Interesting conversion effi…
Hybrid 2D-2D materials composed by perpendicularly oriented covalent organic framework (COFs) and graphene were prepared and tested for energy storage applications. Diboronic acid molecules covalently attached to graphene oxide (GO) were used as nucleation sites for directing vertical growth of COF-1 nanosheets (v-COF-GO). The hybrid material shows forest of COF-1 nanosheets with thickness of ~3 to 15 nm in edge-on orientation relative to GO. The same reaction performed in absence of molecular pillars resulted in uncontrollable growth of thick COF-1 platelets parallel to the surface of GO. The…
