There is a natural question to ask whether the rich mathematical theory of the hyperelliptic curves can be extended to all superelliptic curves. Moreover, one wonders if all of the applications of hyperelliptic curves such as cryptography, mathematical physics, quantum computation, diophantine geometry, etc can carry over to the superelliptic curves. In this short paper we make the case that the superelliptic curves are exactly the curves that one should study.
We present an algorithm for computing the Berkovich skeleton of a superelliptic curve $y^n=f(x)$ over a valued field. After defining superelliptic weighted metric graphs, we show that each one is realizable by an algebraic superelliptic curve when $n$ is prime. Lastly, we study the locus of superelliptic weighted metric graphs inside the moduli space of tropical curves of genus $g$.
We study families of superelliptic curves with fixed automorphism groups. Such families are parametrized with invariants expressed in terms of the coefficients of the curves. Algebraic relations among such invariants determine the lattice of inclusions among the loci of superelliptic curves and their field of moduli. We give a Maple package of how to compute the normal form of an superelliptic curve and its invariants. A complete list of all superelliptic curves of genus $g \leq 10$ defined over any field of characteristic $\neq 2$ is given in a subsequent paper.
In this article we give an explicit construction of the moduli space of trigonal superelliptic curves with level 3 structure. The construction is given in terms of point sets on the projective line and leads to a closed formula for the number of connected (and irreducible) components of the moduli space. The results of the article generalise the description of the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves with level 2 structure, due to Dolgachev and Ortland, Runge and Tsuyumine.
We investigate the decomposition of Jacobians of superelliptic curves based on their automorphisms. For curve with equation $y^n=f(x^m)$ we provide an necessary and sufficient condition in terms of $m$ and $n$ for the decomposition of the Jacobian induced by the automorphisms of the curve. Moreover, we generalize a construction in \cite{Ya} of a family of non-hyperelliptic curves $\mathcal X_{r,s} $ and determine arithmetic conditions on $r$ and $s$ that the Jacobians $\mbox{Jac} (\mathcal X_{r, s})$ decomposes.
This paper is the first version of a project of classifying all superelliptic curves of genus $g \leq 48$ according to their automorphism group. We determine the parametric equations in each family, the corresponding signature of the group, the dimension of the family, and the inclussion among such families. At a later stage it will be determined the decomposition of the Jacobians and each locus in the moduli spaces of curves.
In 2016, Yuri Zarhin gave formulas for "dividing a point on a hyperelliptic curve by 2." Given a point $P$ on a hyperelliptic curve $\mathcal{C}$, Zarhin gives the Mumford's representation of every degree $g$ divisor $D$ such that $2(D - g \infty) \sim P - \infty$. The aim of this paper is to generalize Zarhin's result to the superelliptic situation; instead of dividing by 2, we divide by $1 - ζ$. Even though there is no Mumford's representation for superelliptic curves, we give a formula for functions which cut out $D$.
A superelliptic curve $\X$ of genus $g\geq 2$ is not necessarily defined over its field of moduli but it can be defined over a quadratic extension of it. While a lot of work has been done by many authors to determine which hyperelliptic curves are defined over their field of moduli, less is known for superelliptic curves. In this paper we observe that if the reduced group of a genus $g\geq 2$ superelliptic curve $\X$ is different from the trivial or cyclic group, then $\X$ can be defined over its field of moduli; in the cyclic situation we provide a sufficient condition for this to happen. We …
In this paper we generalize the $j$-invariant criterion for the semistable reduction type of an elliptic curve to superelliptic curves $X$ given by $y^{n}=f(x)$. We first define a set of tropical invariants for $f(x)$ using symmetrized Plücker coordinates and we show that these invariants determine the tree associated to $f(x)$. We then prove that this tree completely determines the reduction type of $X$ for $n$ that are not divisible by the residue characteristic. The conditions on the tropical invariants that distinguish between the different types are given by half-spaces as in the elliptic…
In this lecture we give a brief introduction to Weierstrass points of curves and computational aspects of $q$-Weierstrass points on superelliptic curves.
In this paper we consider the problem of calculating the higher-order Weierstrass weight of the branch points of a superelliptic curve $C$. For any $q>1$, we give an exact formula for the $q$-weight of an affine branch point. We also find a formula for the $q$-weight of a point at infinity in the case where $n$ and $d$ are relatively prime. With these formulas, for any fixed $n$, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the ratio of the $q$-weight of the branch points, denoted $BW_q$, to the total $q$-weight of points on the curve: \[ \liminf_{d\to\infty}\frac{BW_q}{g(g-1)^2(2q-1)^2}\geq \frac{n+1}…
Let $p$ be a prime, and $q$ a power of $p$. Using Galois theory, we show that over a field $K$ of characteristic zero, the endomorphism algebras of the jacobians of certain superelliptic curves $y^q=f(x)$ are products of cyclotomic fields.
In this paper we study the Coleman-Oort conjecture for superelliptic curves, i.e., curves defined by affine equations $y^n=F(x)$ with $F$ a separable polynomial. We prove that up to isomorphism there are at most finitely many superelliptic curves of fixed genus $g\geq 8$ with CM Jacobians. The proof relies on the geometric structures of Shimura subvarieties in Siegel modular varieties and the stability properties of Higgs bundles associated to fibred surfaces.
We give an explicit description of the stable reduction of superelliptic curves of the form $y^n=f(x)$ at primes $\p$ whose residue characteristic is prime to the exponent $n$. We then use this description to compute the local $L$-factor of the curve and the exponent of conductor at $\p$.
We give a structure theorem for the $m$-torsion of the Jacobian of a general superelliptic curve $y^m=F(x)$. We study existence of torsion on curves of the form $y^q=x^p-x+a$ over finite fields of characteristic $p$. We apply those results to bound from below the Mordell-Weil ranks of Jacobians of certain superelliptic curves over $\mathbb Q$.
The reduced Burau representation $V_n$ of the braid group $B_n$ is obtained from the action of $B_n$ on the homology of an infinite cyclic cover of the disc with $n$ punctures. The group homology $H_*(B_n;V_n)$ of braid groups with coefficients in the complexified reduced Burau representation is calculated. Our topological calculation has the following arithmetic interpretation (which also has different algebraic proofs): the expected number of points on a random superelliptic curve of a fixed genus over $\mathbb{F}_q$ is exactly $q$.
In this short survey we give a description of the theta functions of algebraic curves, half-integer theta-nulls, and the fundamental theta functions. We describe how to determine such fundamental theta functions and describe the components of the moduli space in terms of such functions.
Let $C$ be a curve of genus at least three defined over a number field, and let $r$ be the rank of the rational points of its Jacobian. Under mild hypotheses on $r$, recent results by Katz, Rabinoff, Zureick-Brown, and Stoll bound the number of rational points on $C$ by a constant that depends only on its genus. Yet one expects an even stronger bound that depends favorably on $r$: when $r$ is small, there should be fewer points on $C$. In a 2013 paper, Stoll established such a "rank-favorable" bound for hyperelliptic curves using Chabauty's method. In the present work we extend Stoll's results…
We discuss the structure of the endomorphism algebras of the jacobians of superelliptic curves y^q=f(x) where q is a prime power and f(x) is an irreducible cubic or quartic polynomial over the field of rational functions k(t) in characteristic zero, whose Galois group is the full symmetric group.
Let $\X$ be an algebraic curve of genus $g \geq 2$ defined over a field $\F_q$ of characteristic $p > 0$. From $\X$, under certain conditions, we can construct an algebraic geometry code $C$. If the code $C$ is self-orthogonal under the symplectic product then we can construct a quantum code $Q$, called a QAG-code. In this paper we study the construction of such codes from curves with automorphisms and the relation between the automorphism group of the curve $\X$ and the codes $C$ and $Q$.
Let $p$ be a prime, let $r$ and $q$ be powers of $p$, and let $a$ and $b$ be relatively prime integers not divisible by $p$. Let $C/\mathbb F_{r}(t)$ be the superelliptic curve with affine equation $y^b+x^a=t^q-t$. Let $J$ be the Jacobian of $C$. By work of Pries--Ulmer, $J$ satisfies the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture (BSD). Generalizing work of Griffon--Ulmer, we compute the $L$-function of $J$ in terms of certain Gauss sums. In addition, we estimate several arithmetic invariants of $J$ appearing in BSD, including the rank of the Mordell--Weil group $J(\mathbb F_{r}(t))$, the Faltings …
We compute the $L$-functions of a large class of algebraic curves, and verify the expected functional equation numerically. Our computations are based on our previous results on stable reduction to calculate the local $L$-factor and the conductor exponent at the primes of bad reduction. Most of our examples are hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\geq 2$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ which have semistable reduction at every prime $p$. We also treat a few more general examples of superelliptic curves.
A curve over a field of characteristic $p$ is called ordinary if the $p$-torsion of its Jacobian as large as possible, that is, an $\mathbb{F}_p$ vector space of dimension equal to its genus. In this paper we consider the following question: fix a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and a family $\mathscr{F}$ of curves over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Then, what is the probability that a curve in this family is ordinary? We answer this question when $\mathscr{F}$ is either the Artin-Schreier family in any characteristic or a superelliptic family in characteristic 2.
In this paper we present a p-adic algorithm to compute the zeta function of a nondegenerate curve over a finite field using Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology. The paper vastly generalizes previous work since all known cases, e.g. hyperelliptic, superelliptic and C_{ab} curves, can be transformed to fit the nondegenerate case. For curves with a fixed Newton polytope, the property of being nondegenerate is generic, so that the algorithm works for almost all curves with given Newton polytope. For a genus g curve over F_{p^n}, the expected running time is O(n^3g^6 + n^2g^{6.5}), whereas the space compl…
This paper is a sequel to arXiv:1109.4986, where we proved that a general smooth curve of odd genus, canonically or bicanonically embedded, has semistable finite Hilbert points. Here, we prove that a generic canonically embedded curve of even genus has semistable finite Hilbert points. More precisely, we prove that a generic canonically embedded trigonal curve of even genus has semistable finite Hilbert points. Furthermore, we show that the analogous result fails for bielliptic curves. Namely, the Hilbert points of bielliptic curves are asymptotically semistable but become non-semistable below…
An algorithm is given to compute a normal form for hyperelliptic curves. The elliptic case has been treated in a previous paper. In this paper the hyperelliptic case is treated.
It is well-known that del Pezzo surfaces of degree $9-n$ one-to-one correspond to flat $E_n$ bundles over an elliptic curve. In this paper, we construct $ADE$ bundles over a broader class of rational surfaces which we call $ADE$ surfaces, and extend the above correspondence to all flat $G$ bundles over an elliptic curve, where $G$ is any simply laced, simple, compact and simply-connected Lie group. In the sequel, we will construct $G$ bundles for non-simply laced Lie group $G$ over these rational surfaces, and extend the above correspondence to non-simply laced cases.
Using the notion of generalized divisors introduced by Hartshorne, we adapt the theory of adjoint forms to the case of Gorenstein curves. We show an infinitesimal Torelli-type theorem for vector bundles on Gorenstein curves. We also construct explicit counterexamples to the infinitesimal Torelli claim in the case of a reduced reducible Gorenstein curve.
For any non-simply laced Lie group $G$ and elliptic curve $Σ$, we show that the moduli space of flat $G$ bundles over $Σ$ can be identified with the moduli space of rational surfaces with $G$-configurations which contain $Σ$ as an anti-canonical curve. We also construct $Lie(G)$-bundles over these surfaces. The corresponding results for simply laced groups were obtained by the authors in another paper. Thus we have established a natural identification for these two kinds of moduli spaces for any Lie group $G$.
We study Shimura curves of PEL type in the space of polarised abelian varieties $A^δ_p$ generically contained in the ramified Prym locus. We generalise to ramified double covers, the construction done in [10] in the unramified case and in the case of two ramification points. Namely, we construct families of double covers which are compatible with a fixed group action on the base curve. We only consider the case of one-dimensional families and where the quotient of the base curve by the group is ${\mathbb P}^1$. Using computer algebra we obtain 184 Shimura curves contained in the (ramified) Pry…
We extend the group law of curves of degree three by chords and tangents to the Jacobi variety of plane curves of degree n>4 by replacing points by point groups and lines by algebraic curves. The curves are nonsingular or have simple singularities. In the cases n=4,5,6 we have a close analogy to the case n=3. We describe an algorithm using Groebner bases.
We study Mori's three-dimensional contractions $f\colon X\to Z$. It is proved that on the ``good'' model $(\bar X,\bar S)$ the exceptional divisor has no elliptic components of $Diff_{\bar S}$ with coefficients $\ge 6/7$.
In this paper we classify non-symplectic automorphisms of order 8 on complex K3 surfaces in case that the fourth power of the automorphism has only rational curves in its fixed locus. We show that the fixed locus is the disjoint union of a rational curve and 10 isolated points or it consists in 4 isolated fixed points. We give examples corresponding to the case with a rational curve in the fixed locus and to the case with only isolated points in the fixed locus.
We investigate the (small) quantum cohomology ring of the moduli spaces of stable n-pointed curves of genus 0. In particular, we determine an explicit presentation in the case n=5 and we outline a computational approach to the case n=6.
In this paper we demonstrate that the notion of inflection points and extactic points on plane algebraic curves can be suitably transferred to curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$. More precisely, we describe osculating curves and study Weierstrass points of algebraic curves in the surface $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ with respect to certain linear systems. In particular, we study points where a fiber of $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ is tangent, and points with a hyperosculating $(1,1)$-curve. In the first case we find Hessian-like curves that intersect the curve in these point…
We describe the Alexander modules and Alexander polynomials (both over $\Q$ and over finite fields $\FF{p}$) of generalized trigonal curves. The rational case is closed completely; in the case of characteristic $p>0$, a few points remain open.
For each integer $s\geq 1$, we present a family of curves that are $\mathbb{F}_q$-Frobenius nonclassical with respect to the linear system of plane curves of degree s. In the case $s = 2$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for such curves to be $\mathbb{F}_q$-Frobenius nonclassical with respect to the linear system of conics. In the $\mathbb{F}_q$-Frobenius nonclassical cases, we determine the exact number of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points. In the remaining cases, an upper bound for the number of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points will follow from Stöhr-Voloch theory.
We show the existence of metrically dense entire curves in rationally connected complex projective manifolds confirming for this case a conjecture according to which such entire curves on projective manifolds exist if and only if these are "special". We also show that such a dense entire curve may be chosen in such a way that it does not lift to any of its ramified covers, answering in this case a question of Corvaja and Zannier about the Nevanlinna analog of the `weak Hilbert property' of arithmetic geometry. We consider briefly the other test case of the conjecture, namely manifolds with $c_…
We study the deformation of $G$-marked stable curves in the case where $G$ is a cyclic group, and construct a parameterizing space for $G$-marked stable curves of a given numerical type. This is then used in order to study the components of the locus of stable curves admitting the action of a cyclic group of non prime order $d$, extending work of F. Catanese in the case where $d$ is prime.
We study a variant of the Neron models over curves which is recently found by the second named author in a more general situation using the theory of Hodge modules. We show that its identity component is a certain open subset of an iterated blow-up along smooth centers of the Zucker extension of the family of intermediate Jacobians and that the total space is a complex Lie group over the base curve and is Hausdorff as a topological space. In the unipotent monodromy case, the image of the map to the Clemens extension coincides with the Neron model defined by Green, Griffiths and Kerr. In the ca…
By using Christol and Mebkhout's algebrization and finiteness theorem, we prove that in the case of smooth curves, Berthelot's strongest conjecture on the stability of holonomicity is still valid without Frobenius structure but under some non-Liouville type hypotheses.
Given our set-up of a system of curves and maps between them satisfying certain assumptions, we prove a classicality criterion for overconvergent sections of line bundles over these curves. As a result, we prove such criteria for overconvergent modular forms over various Shimura curves. In particular, we provide a classicality criterion for overconvergent modular forms studied in [Kassaei: P-adic modular forms over Shimura curves over totally real fields, Compositio Math. 140 (2004), no 2, 359-395] and their higher-level generalizations.
This paper gives a natural extension of Frobenius-Stickelberger formula and Kiepert formula to Abelian functions for "Purely Trigonal Curves", especially, of degree four. A description on the theory of Abelian functions for general trigonal curves of degree four is also included.
We classify the log del Pezzo surface (S,B) of rank 1 with no 1-,2-,3-,4-, or 6-complements with the additional condition that B has one irreducible component C which is an elliptic curve, and that C has the coefficient b in B with (1/n)floor((n+1)b)=1 for n=1,2,3,4, and 6.
