A stochastic process, when subject to resetting to its initial condition at a constant rate, generically reaches a non-equilibrium steady state. We study analytically how the steady state is approached in time and find an unusual relaxation mechanism in these systems. We show that as time progresses, an inner core region around the resetting point reaches the steady state, while the region outside the core is still transient. The boundaries of the core region grow with time as power laws at late times. Alternatively, at a fixed spatial point, the system undergoes a dynamical transition from the transient to the steady state at a characteristic space dependent timescale $t^*(x)$. We calculate analytically in several examples the large deviation function associated with this spatio-temporal fluctuation and show that generically it has a second order discontinuity at a pair of critical points characterizing the edges of the inner core. Our results are verified in the numerical simulations of several models, such as simple diffusion and fluctuating one-dimensional interfaces.
The zero-temperature limit of the backgammon model under resetting is studied. The model is a balls-in-boxes model whose relaxation dynamics is governed by the density of boxes containing just one particle. As these boxes become rare at large times, the model presents an entropy barrier. As a preliminary step, a related model with faster relaxation, known to be mapped to a symmetric random walk, is studied by mapping recent results on diffusion with resetting onto the balls-in-boxes problem. Diffusion with an absorbing target at the origin (and diffusion constant equal to one), stochastically …

Stochastic resetting and noise-enhanced stability are two phenomena which can affect the lifetime and relaxation of nonequilibrium states. They can be considered as measures of controlling the efficiency of the completion process when a stochastic system has to reach a desired state. Here, we study interaction of random (Poissonian) resetting and stochastic dynamics in unstable potentials. Unlike noise-induced stability which increases the relaxation time, the stochastic resetting may eliminate winding trajectories contributing to the lifetime and accelerate the escape kinetics from unstable s…
We consider motion of an overdamped Brownian particle subject to stochastic resetting in one dimension. In contrast to the usual setting where the particle is instantaneously reset to a preferred location (say, the origin), here we consider a finite time resetting process facilitated by an external linear potential $V(x)=λ|x|~ (λ>0)$. When resetting occurs, the trap is switched on and the particle experiences a force $-\partial_x V(x)$ which helps the particle to return to the resetting location. The trap is switched off as soon as the particle makes a first passage to the origin. Subsequently…
We study two Brownian particles in dimension $d=1$, diffusing under an interacting resetting mechanism to a fixed position. The particles are subject to a constant drift, which biases the Brownian particles toward each other. We derive the steady-state distributions and study the late time relaxation behavior to the stationary state.
We address the effect of stochastic resetting on diffusion and subdiffusion process. For diffusion we find that MSD relaxes to a constant only when the distribution of reset times possess finite mean and variance. In this case, the leading order contribution to the PDF of a Gaussian propagator under resetting exhibits a cusp independent of the specific details of the reset time distribution. For subdiffusion we derive the PDF in Laplace space for arbitrary resetting protocol. Resetting at constant rate allows evaluation of the PDF in terms of H-function. We analyze the steady state and derive …
We consider a stochastic process undergoing resetting after which a random refractory period is imposed. In this period the process is quiescent and remains at the resetting position. Using a first-renewal approach, we compute exactly the stationary position distribution and analyse the emergence of a delta peak at the resetting position. In the case of a power-law distribution for the refractory period we find slow relaxation. We generalise our results to the case when the resetting period and the refractory period are correlated, by computing the Laplace transform of the survival probability…
The effects of Poissonian resetting at a constant rate $r$ on the reaction time between a Brownian particle and a stochastically gated target are studied. The target switches between a reactive state and a non-reactive one. We calculate the mean time at which the particle subject to resetting hits the target for the first time, while the latter is in the reactive state. The search time is minimum at a resetting rate that depends on the target transition rates. When the target relaxation rate is much larger than both the resetting rate and the inverse diffusion time, the system becomes equivale…
We study the diffusive motion of a test particle in a two-dimensional comb structure consisting of a main backbone channel with continuously distributed side branches, in the presence of stochastic Markovian resetting to the initial position of the particle. We assume that the motion along the infinitely long branches is biased by a confining potential. The crossover to the steady state is quantified in terms of a large deviation function, which is derived for the first time for comb structures in present paper. We show that the relaxation region is demarcated by a nonlinear "light-cone" beyon…

We consider the motion of a randomly accelerated particle in one dimension under stochastic resetting mechanism. Denoting the position and velocity by $x$ and $v$ respectively, we consider two different resetting protocols - (i) complete resetting: here both $x$ and $v$ reset to their initial values $x_0$ and $v_0$ at a constant rate $r$, (ii) partial resetting: here only $x$ resets to $x_0$ while $v$ evolves without interruption. For complete resetting, we find that the particle attains stationary state in both $x$ and $v$. We compute the non-equilibrium joint stationary state of $x$ and $v$ …
The canonical Evans--Majumdar model for diffusion with stochastic resetting to the origin assumes that resetting takes zero time: upon resetting the diffusing particle is teleported back to the origin to start its motion anew. However, in reality, getting from one place to another takes a finite amount of time which must be accounted for as diffusion with resetting already serves as a model for a myriad of processes in physics and beyond. Here we consider a situation where upon resetting the diffusing particle returns to the origin at a finite (rather than infinite) speed. This creates a coupl…

Inspired by many examples in nature, stochastic resetting of random processes has been studied extensively in the past decade. In particular, various models of stochastic particle motion were considered where upon resetting the particle is returned to its initial position. Here we generalize the model of diffusion with resetting to account for situations where a particle is returned only a fraction of its distance to the origin, e.g., half way. We show that this model always attains a steady-state distribution which can be written as an infinite sum of independent, but not identical, Laplace r…
We study the statistics of the first-passage time of a single run and tumble particle (RTP) in one spatial dimension, with or without resetting, to a fixed target located at $L>0$. First, we compute the first-passage time distribution of a free RTP, without resetting nor in a confining potential, but averaged over the initial position drawn from an arbitrary distribution $p(x)$. Recent experiments used a non-instantaneous resetting protocol that motivated us to study in particular the case where $p(x)$ corresponds to the stationary non-Boltzmann distribution of an RTP in the presence of a harm…
We study the dynamics of symmetric exclusion process (SEP) in the presence of stochastic resetting to two possible specific configurations -- with rate $r_1$ (respectively, $r_2$) the system is reset to a step-like configuration where all the particles are clustered in the left (respectively, right) half of the system. We show that this dichotomous resetting leads to a range of rich behaviour, both dynamical and in the stationary state. We calculate the exact stationary profile in the presence of this dichotomous resetting and show that the diffusive current grows linearly in time, but unlike …
We study the effect of stochastic resetting on a run and tumble particle (RTP) in two spatial dimensions. We consider a resetting protocol which affects both the position and orientation of the RTP: with a constant rate the particle undergoes a positional resetting to a fixed point in space and orientation randomization. We compute the radial and $x$-marginal stationary state distributions and show that while the former approaches a constant value as $r \to 0$, the latter diverges logarithmically as $x \to 0$. On the other hand, both the marginal distributions decay exponentially with the same…
Motion under stochastic resetting serves to model a myriad of processes in physics and beyond, but in most cases studied to date resetting to the origin was assumed to take zero time or a time decoupled from the spatial position at the resetting moment. However, in our world, getting from one place to another always takes time and places that are further away take more time to be reached. We thus set off to extend the theory of stochastic resetting such that it would account for this inherent spatio-temporal coupling. We consider a particle that starts at the origin and follows a certain law o…
We study a Brownian particle diffusing under a time-modulated stochastic resetting mechanism to a fixed position. The rate of resetting r(t) is a function of the time t since the last reset event. We derive a sufficient condition on r(t) for a steady-state probability distribution of the position of the particle to exist. We derive the form of the steady-state distributions under some particular choices of r(t) and also consider the late time relaxation behavior of the probability distribution. Finally we consider first passage time properties for the Brownian particle to reach the origin and …
We study the dynamics of an overdamped Brownian particle subjected to Poissonian stochastic resetting in a nonthermal bath, characterized by a Poisson white noise and a Gaussian noise. Applying the renewal theory we find an exact analytical expression for the spatial distribution at the steady state. Unlike the single exponential distribution as observed in the case of a purely thermal bath, the distribution is double exponential. Relaxation of the transient spatial distributions to the stationary one, for the limiting cases of Poissonian rate, is investigated carefully. In addition, we study …
We consider a general discrete state-space system with both unidirectional and bidirectional links. In contrast to bidirectional links, there is no reverse transition along the unidirectional links. Herein, we first compute the statistical length and the thermodynamic cost function for transitions in the probability space, highlighting contributions from total, environmental, and resetting (unidirectional) entropy production. Then, we derive the thermodynamic bound on the speed limit to connect two distributions separated by a finite time, showing the effect of the presence of unidirectional t…
Detailed knowledge of individual income dynamics is crucial for investigating the existence of the American dream: Are we able to improve our income status during our working life? This key question simply boils down to observing individual status and how it moves between two thresholds: the current income and the desired income. Yet, our knowledge of these temporal properties of income remains limited since we rely on estimates coming from transition matrices which simplify income dynamics by aggregating the individual changes into quantiles and thus overlooking significant microscopic variat…
Recent studies in one dimension have revealed that the temporal advantage rendered by stochastic resetting to diffusing particles in attaining first passage, may be annulled by a sufficiently strong attractive potential. We extend the results to higher dimensions. For a diffusing particle in an attractive potential $V({R})=k {R}^n$, in general $d$ dimensions, we study the critical strength $k = k_c$ above which resetting becomes disadvantageous. The point of continuous transition may be exactly found even in cases where the problem with resetting is not solvable, provided the first two moments…

We investigate the dynamic relaxation of random walks on temporal networks by focusing in the recently proposed activity driven model [Perra \textit{et al.} Sci. Rep. srep00469 (2012)]. For realistic activity distributions with a power-law form, we observe the presence of a very slow relaxation dynamics compatible with aging effects. A theoretical description of this processes in achieved by means of a mapping to Bouchaud's trap model. The mapping highlights the profound difference in the dynamics of the random walks according to the value of the exponent $γ$ in the activity distribution.
A recent theory by Bertini, De Sole, Gabrielli, Jona-Lasinio and Landim predicts a temporal asymmetry in the fluctuation-relaxation paths of certain observables of nonequilibrium systems in local thermodynamic equilibrium. We find temporal asymmetries in the fluctuation-relaxation paths of a form of local heat flow, in the nonequilibrium FPU-$\zb$ model of Lepri, Livi and Politi.
We study the effects of an intermittent harmonic potential of strength $μ= μ_0 ν$ -- that switches on and off stochastically at a constant rate $γ$, on an overdamped Brownian particle with damping coefficient $ν$. This can be thought of as a realistic model for realisation of stochastic resetting. We show that this dynamics admits a stationary solution in all parameter regimes and compute the full time dependent variance for the position distribution and find the characteristic relaxation time. We find the exact non-equilibrium stationary state distributions in the limits -- (i) $γ\llμ_0 $ whi…
Typicality of the orthogonal dynamics (TOD) is established as a generic feature of temporal relaxation processes in isolated many-body quantum systems. The basic idea in the simplest case is that the transient non-equilibrium behavior is mainly governed by the component of the time-evolved system state parallel to the initial state, while the orthogonal component appears as equilibrated right from the beginning. The main emphasis is laid on the largely unexplored and particularly challenging case that one energy level exhibits a much larger population than all the others. Important examples ar…
We revisit here the problem of the collective non-equilibrium dynamics of a classical statistical system at a critical point and in the presence of surfaces. The effects of breaking separately space- and time-translational invariance are well understood, hence we focus here on the emergence of a non-trivial interplay between them. For this purpose, we consider a semi-infinite model with $O(n)$-symmetry and purely dissipative dynamics which is prepared in a disordered state and then suddenly quenched to its critical temperature. We determine the short-distance behaviour of its response function…
We simulate a growth model with restricted surface relaxation process in d=1 and d=2, where d is the dimensionality of a flat substrate. In this model, each particle can relax on the surface to a local minimum, as the Edwards-Wilkinson linear model, but only within a distance s. If the local minimum is out from this distance, the particle evaporates through a refuse mechanism similar to the Kim-Kosterlitz nonlinear model. In d=1, the growth exponent beta, measured from the temporal behavior of roughness, indicates that in the coarse-grained limit, the linear term of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equ…
We study relaxation dynamics of a three dimensional elastic manifold in random potential from a uniform initial condition by numerically solving the Langevin equation. We observe growth of roughness of the system up to larger wavelengths with time.We analyze structure factor in detail and find a compact scaling ansatz describing two distinct time regimes and crossover between them. We find short time regime corresponding to length scale smaller than the Larkin length $L_c$ is well described by the Larkin model which predicts a power law growth of domain size $L(t)$. Longer time behavior exhibit…
The slow non-monotonic relaxation processes, which have been recently fixed in Al-Y melts, are described theoretically. The theoretical description is based on the Cahn-Hilliard theory and functional methods of non-equilibrium dynamics. In terms of the suggested approach the reasons of this relaxation kinetics are non-linearity of the system near to the liquidus line, which sharply increases with Y concentration, and strong initial heterogeneity of the melt on the concentration of Y atoms. According to our analysis one can conclude that the non-monotonic temporal dependence of viscosity is cau…
Using the recently derived Dissipation Theorem and a corollary of the Transient Fluctuation Theorem (TFT), namely the Second Law Inequality, we derive the unique time independent, equilibrium phase space distribution function for an ergodic Hamiltonian system in contact with a remote heat bath. We prove under very general conditions that any deviation from this equilibrium distribution breaks the time independence of the distribution. Provided temporal correlations decay, and the system is ergodic, we show that any nonequilibrium distribution that is an even function of the momenta, eventually…
The existence of heterogeneity in the dynamics of supercooled liquids is believed to be one of the hallmarks of the glass transition. Intense research has been carried out in the past to understand the origin of this heterogeneity in dynamics and a possible length scale associated with it. We have done extensive molecular dynamics simulations of few model glass-forming liquids in three dimensions to understand the temporal evolution of the dynamic heterogeneity and the heterogeneity length scale. We find that although the strength of the dynamic heterogeneity is maximum at a timescale close to…
We propose to study the origin of algebraic decay of two-point correlation functions observed in glasses, proteins, and quantum dots by their nonlinear response to sequences of ultrafast laser pulses. Power-law spectral singularities and temporal relaxation in two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCS) signals are predicted for a continuous time random walk model of stochastic spectral jumps in a two level system with a power-law distribution of waiting times $ψ(t)\sim t^{-α-1}$. Spectroscopic signatures of stationary ensembles for $1<α<2$ and aging effects in nonstationary ensembles with…
Physics-based and statistic-based models for describing seismic occurrence are two sides of the same coin. In this article we compare the temporal organization of events obtained in a spring-block model for the seismic fault with the one predicted by probabilistic models for seismic occurrence. Thanks to the optimization of the parameters, by means of a Maximum Likelihood Estimation, it is possible to identify the statistical model which fits better the physical one. The results show that the best statistical model must take into account the non trivial interplay between temporal clustering, r…
Temporal relaxation of density fluctuations in supercooled liquids near the glass transition occurs in multiple steps. The short-time $β$-relaxation is generally attributed to spatially local processes involving the rattling motion of a particle in the transient cage formed by its neighbors. Using molecular dynamics simulations for three model glass-forming liquids, we show that the $β$-relaxation is actually cooperative in nature. Using finite-size scaling analysis, we extract a growing length-scale associated with $β$-relaxation from the observed dependence of the $β$-relaxation time on the …
An analytical prediction is established of how an isolated many-body quantum system relaxes towards its thermal long-time limit under the action of a time-independent perturbation, but still remaining sufficiently close to a reference case whose temporal relaxation is known. This is achieved within the conceptual framework of a typicality approach by showing and exploiting that the time-dependent expectation values behave very similarly for most members of a suitably chosen ensemble of perturbations. The predictions are validated by comparison with various numerical and experimental results fr…
The relaxation time approximation (RTA) is a well known method of describing the time evolution of a statistical ensemble by linking distributions of the variables of interest at different stages of their temporal evolution. We show that if all the distributions occurring in the RTA have the same functional form of a quasi-power Tsallis distribution the time evolution of which depends on the time evolution of its control parameter, nonextensivity $q(t)$, then it is more convenient to consider only the time evolution of this control parameter.
Numerically we study the bulk current relaxation in percolative Random Resistor cum Tunneling Network (RRTN) model through a first-passage route. The RRTN considers an extra semi-classical barrier-crossing process over a voltage threshold within a framework of classical RRN bond percolation model. We identify the different temporal regimes of relaxation and corresponding phenomenological time-scales, which fix up the extents of different regimes. These time-scales were previously identified in refs. \cite{relax-physicaA, aksubh}. We investigate on the distributions of these time-scales and obs…
We propose a spatio-temporal characterization of the entanglement dynamics in many-body localized (MBL) systems, which exhibits a striking resemblance with dynamical heterogeneity in classical glasses. Specifically, we find that the relaxation times of local entanglement, as measured by the concurrence, are spatially correlated yielding a dynamical length scale for quantum entanglement. As a consequence of this spatio-temporal analysis, we observe that the considered MBL system is made up of dynamically correlated clusters with a size set by this entanglement length scale. The system decompose…
The Tethered Particle Motion (TPM) technique informs about conformational changes of DNA molecules, e.g. upon looping or interaction with proteins, by tracking the Brownian motion of a particle probe tethered to a surface by a single DNA molecule and detecting changes of its amplitude of movement. We discuss in this context the time resolution of TPM, which strongly depends on the particle-DNA complex relaxation time, i.e. the characteristic time it takes to explore its configuration space by diffusion. By comparing theory, simulations and experiments, we propose a calibration of TPM at the dy…
The general scheme for the treatment of relaxation processes and temporal autocorrelations of dynamical variables for many particle systems is presented in framework of the recurrence relations approach. The time autocorrelation functions and/or their spectral characteristics, which are measurable experimentally (for example, due to spectroscopy techniques) and accessible from particle dynamics simulations, can be found by means of this approach, the main idea of which is the estimation of the so-called frequency parameters. Model cases with the exact and approximative solutions are given and …
