We address the effect of stochastic resetting on diffusion and subdiffusion process. For diffusion we find that MSD relaxes to a constant only when the distribution of reset times possess finite mean and variance. In this case, the leading order contribution to the PDF of a Gaussian propagator under resetting exhibits a cusp independent of the specific details of the reset time distribution. For subdiffusion we derive the PDF in Laplace space for arbitrary resetting protocol. Resetting at constant rate allows evaluation of the PDF in terms of H-function. We analyze the steady state and derive the rate function governing the relaxation behavior. For a subdiffusive process the steady state could exist even if the distribution of reset times possesses only finite mean.
We analyze two models of subdiffusion with stochastic resetting. Each of them consists of two parts: subdiffusion based on the continuous-time random walk (CTRW) scheme and independent resetting events generated uniformly in time according to the Poisson point process. In the first model the whole process is reset to the initial state, whereas in the second model only the position is subject to resets. The distinction between these two models arises from the non-Markovian character of the subdiffusive process. We derive exact expressions for the two lowest moments of the full propagator, stati…
Recently, in the paper: T. Kosztołowicz and A. Dutkiewicz, Phys. Rev. E \textbf{104}, 014118 (2021) the $g$--subdiffusion equation with fractional Caputo time derivative with respect to another function $g$ has been considered. This equation offers new possibilities for modelling diffusion such as a process in which a type of diffusion evolves continuously over time. However, the equation has not been derived from a stochastic model and the stochastic interpretation of $g$--subdiffusion has been unknown. In this paper we show stochastic foundations of this process. We derive the equation by me…
We analyze diffusion processes with finite propagation speed in a non-homogeneous medium in terms of the heterogeneous telegrapher's equation. In the diffusion limit of infinite-velocity propagation we recover the results for the heterogeneous diffusion process. The heterogeneous telegrapher's process exhibits a rich variety of diffusion regimes including hyperdiffusion, ballistic motion, superdiffusion, normal diffusion and subdiffusion, and different crossover dynamics characteristic for complex systems in which anomalous diffusion is observed. The anomalous diffusion exponent in the short t…
Intermittent stochastic processes appear in a wide field, such as chemistry, biology, ecology, and computer science. This paper builds up the theory of intermittent continuous time random walk (CTRW) and Lévy walk, in which the particles are stochastically reset to a given position with a resetting rate $r$. The mean squared displacements of the CTRW and Lévy walks with stochastic resetting are calculated, uncovering that the stochastic resetting always makes the CTRW process localized and Lévy walk diffuse slower. The asymptotic behaviors of the probability density function of Lévy walk with …
We consider properties of one-dimensional diffusive dichotomous flow and discuss effects of resonant activation in the presence of statistically independent random resetting mechanism. Resonant activation and stochastic resetting are two similar effects, as both of them can optimize the noise induced escape. Our studies show completely different origins of optimization in adapted setups. Efficiency of stochastic resetting relies on elimination of suboptimal trajectories while resonant activation is associated with matching of time scales in the dynamic environment. Consequently, both effects c…
Stochastic dynamics with random resetting leads to a non-equilibrium steady state. Here, we consider the thermodynamics of resetting by deriving the first and second law for reset processes far from equilibrium. We identify the contributions to the entropy production of the system which arise due to resetting and show that they correspond to the rate with which information is either erased or created. Using Landauer's principle, we derive a bound on the amount of work that is required to maintain a resetting process. We discuss different regimes of resetting, including a Maxwell's demon scenar…
We consider the problem of diffusion with stochastic resetting in a population of random walks where the diffusion coefficient is not constant, but behaves as a power-law of the average resetting rate of the population. Resetting occurs only beyond a threshold distance from the origin. This problem is motivated by physical realizations like soft matter under shear, where diffusion of a walk is induced by resetting events of other walks. We first reformulate in the broader context of diffusion with stochastic resetting the so-called Hébraud-Lequeux model for plasticity in dense soft matter, in …
Stochastic resetting and noise-enhanced stability are two phenomena which can affect the lifetime and relaxation of nonequilibrium states. They can be considered as measures of controlling the efficiency of the completion process when a stochastic system has to reach a desired state. Here, we study interaction of random (Poissonian) resetting and stochastic dynamics in unstable potentials. Unlike noise-induced stability which increases the relaxation time, the stochastic resetting may eliminate winding trajectories contributing to the lifetime and accelerate the escape kinetics from unstable s…
The state of many physical, biological and socio-technical systems evolves by combining smooth local transitions and abrupt resetting events to a set of reference values. The inclusion of the resetting mechanism not only provides the possibility of modeling a wide variety of realistic systems but also leads to interesting novel phenomenology not present in reset-free cases. However, most models where stochastic resetting is studied address the case of a finite number of uncorrelated variables, commonly a single one, such as the position of non-interacting random walkers. Here we overcome this …
The model of binary aggregation with constant kernel is subjected to stochastic resetting: aggregates of any size explode into monomers at independent stochastic times. These resetting times are Poisson distributed, and the rate of the process is called the resetting rate. The master equation yields a Bernoulli-type equation in the generating function of the concentration of aggregates of any size, which can be solved exactly. This resetting prescription leads to a non-equilibrium steady state for the densities of aggregates, which is a function of the size of the aggregate, rescaled by a func…
We study a diffusion process on a three-dimensional comb under stochastic resetting. We consider three different types of resetting: global resetting from any point in the comb to the initial position, resetting from a finger to the corresponding backbone and resetting from secondary fingers to the main fingers. The transient dynamics along the backbone in all three cases is different due to the different resetting mechanisms, finding a wide range of dynamics for the mean squared displacement. For the particular geometry studied herein, we compute the stationary solution and the mean square di…
In this Topical Review we consider stochastic processes under resetting, which have attracted a lot of attention in recent years. We begin with the simple example of a diffusive particle whose position is reset randomly in time with a constant rate $r$, which corresponds to Poissonian resetting, to some fixed point (e.g. its initial position). This simple system already exhibits the main features of interest induced by resetting: (i) the system reaches a nontrivial nonequilibrium stationary state (ii) the mean time for the particle to reach a target is finite and has a minimum, optimal, value …
Diffusion and first passage in the presence of stochastic resetting and potential bias have been of recent interest. We study a few models, systematically progressing in their complexity, to understand the usefulness of resetting. In the parameter space of the models, there are multiple continuous and discontinuous transitions where the advantage of resetting vanishes. We show these results analytically exactly for a tent-potential, and numerically accurately for a quartic-potential relevant to a magnetic system at low temperatures. We find that the spatial asymmetry of the potential across th…
We study random walks with stochastic resetting to the initial position on arbitrary networks. We obtain the stationary probability distribution as well as the mean and global first passage times, which allow us to characterize the effect of resetting on the capacity of a random walker to reach a particular target or to explore a finite network. We apply the results to rings, Cayley trees, random and complex networks. Our formalism holds for undirected networks and can be implemented from the spectral properties of the random walk without resetting, providing a tool to analyze the search effic…
We study simple diffusion where a particle stochastically resets to its initial position at a constant rate r. A finite resetting rate leads to a nonequilibrium stationary state with non-Gaussian fluctuations for the particle position. We also show that the mean time to find a stationary target by a diffusive searcher is finite and has a minimum value at an optimal resetting rate r^*. Resetting also alters fundamentally the late time decay of the survival probability of a stationary target when there are multiple searchers: while the typical survival probability decays exponentially with time,…
We have proposed a new stochastic interpretation of the sudiffusion described by the Sharma-Mittal entropy formalism which generates a nonlinear subdiffusion equation with natural order derivatives. We have shown that the solution to the diffusion equation generated by Gauss entropy (which is the particular case of Sharma-Mittal entropy) is the same as the solution of the Fokker-Planck (FP) equation generated by the Langevin generalised equation where the `long memory effect' is taken into account. The external noise which pertubates the subdiffusion coefficient (occuring in the solution of FP…
We consider a single Brownian particle in one dimension in a medium at a constant temperature in the underdamped regime. We stochastically reset the position of the Brownian particle to a fixed point in the space with a constant rate $r$ whereas its velocity evolves irrespective of the position of the particle and stochastic resetting mechanism. The nonequilibrium steady state of the position distribution is studied for this model system. Further, we study the distribution of the position of the particle in the finite time and the approach to the nonequilibrium steady state distribution with t…
The effects of Poissonian resetting at a constant rate $r$ on the reaction time between a Brownian particle and a stochastically gated target are studied. The target switches between a reactive state and a non-reactive one. We calculate the mean time at which the particle subject to resetting hits the target for the first time, while the latter is in the reactive state. The search time is minimum at a resetting rate that depends on the target transition rates. When the target relaxation rate is much larger than both the resetting rate and the inverse diffusion time, the system becomes equivale…
We study the diffusive transport of Markovian random walks on arbitrary networks with stochastic resetting to multiple nodes. We deduce analytical expressions for the stationary occupation probability and for the mean and global first passage times. This general approach allows us to characterize the effect of resetting on the capacity of random walk strategies to reach a particular target or to explore the network. Our formalism holds for ergodic random walks and can be implemented from the spectral properties of the random walk without resetting, providing a tool to analyze the efficiency of…
We study the position distribution of an active Brownian particle (ABP) in the presence of stochastic resetting in two spatial dimensions. We consider three different resetting protocols : (I) where both position and orientation of the particle are reset, (II) where only the position is reset, and (III) where only the orientation is reset with a certain rate $r.$ We show that in the first two cases the ABP reaches a stationary state. Using a renewal approach, we calculate exactly the stationary marginal position distributions in the limiting cases when the resetting rate $r$ is much larger or …
We consider a stochastic process undergoing resetting after which a random refractory period is imposed. In this period the process is quiescent and remains at the resetting position. Using a first-renewal approach, we compute exactly the stationary position distribution and analyse the emergence of a delta peak at the resetting position. In the case of a power-law distribution for the refractory period we find slow relaxation. We generalise our results to the case when the resetting period and the refractory period are correlated, by computing the Laplace transform of the survival probability…
In the classical stochastic resetting problem, a particle, moving according to some stochastic dynamics, undergoes random interruptions that bring it to a selected domain, and then, the process recommences. Hitherto, the resetting mechanism has been introduced as a symmetric reset about the preferred location. However, in nature, there are several instances where a system can only reset from certain directions, e.g., catastrophic events. Motivated by this, we consider a continuous stochastic process on the positive real line. The process is interrupted at random times occurring at a constant r…
Stochastic processes that are randomly reset to an initial condition serve as a showcase to investigate non-equilibrium steady states. However, all existing results have been restricted to the special case of memoryless resetting protocols. Here, we obtain the general solution for the distribution of processes in which waiting times between reset events are drawn from an arbitrary distribution. This allows for the investigation of a broader class of much more realistic processes. As an example, our results are applied to the analysis of the efficiency of constrained random search processes.
We consider the motion of a randomly accelerated particle in one dimension under stochastic resetting mechanism. Denoting the position and velocity by $x$ and $v$ respectively, we consider two different resetting protocols - (i) complete resetting: here both $x$ and $v$ reset to their initial values $x_0$ and $v_0$ at a constant rate $r$, (ii) partial resetting: here only $x$ resets to $x_0$ while $v$ evolves without interruption. For complete resetting, we find that the particle attains stationary state in both $x$ and $v$. We compute the non-equilibrium joint stationary state of $x$ and $v$ …
Random walks with stochastic resetting provides a treatable framework to study interesting features about central-place motion. In this work, we introduce non-instantaneous resetting as a two-state model being a combination of an exploring state where the walker moves randomly according to a propagator and a returning state where the walker performs a ballistic motion with constant velocity towards the origin. We study the emerging transport properties for two types of reset time probability density functions (PDFs): exponential and Pareto. In the first case, we find the stationary distributio…
Diffusion with stochastic resetting is a paradigm of resetting processes. Standard renewal or master equation approach are typically used to study steady state and other transport properties such as average, mean squared displacement etc. What remains less explored is the two time point correlation functions whose evaluation is often daunting since it requires the implementation of the exact time dependent probability density functions of the resetting processes which are unknown for most of the problems. We adopt a different approach that allows us to write a stochastic solution in the level …
In this paper, we analyze the mean first passage time (MFPT) for a single Brownian particle to find a stochastically-gated target under the additional condition that the position of the particle is reset to a fixed position $\x_r$ at a rate $r$. The gate switches between an open and closed state according to a two-state Markov chain and can only be detected by the searcher in the open state. One possible example of such a target is a protein switching between different conformational states. As expected, the MFPT with or without resetting is an increasing function of the fraction of time $ρ_0$…
The escape of the randomly accelerated undamped particle from the finite interval under action of stochastic resetting is studied. The motion of such a particle is described by the full Langevin equation and the particle is characterized by the position and velocity. We compare three resetting protocols, which restarts velocity or position (partial resetting) and the whole motion (position and velocity -- full resetting). Using the mean first passage time we assess efficiency of restarting protocols in facilitating or suppressing the escape kinetics. There are fundamental differences between p…
We consider a random walker on a ring, subjected to resetting at Poisson-distributed times to the initial position (the walker takes the shortest path along the ring to the initial position at resetting times). In the case of a Brownian random walker the mean first-completion time of a turn is expressed in closed form as a function of the resetting rate. The value is shorter than in the ordinary process if the resetting rate is low enough. Moreover, the mean first-completion time of a turn can be minimised in the resetting rate. At large time the distribution of winding numbers does not reach …
Motion under stochastic resetting serves to model a myriad of processes in physics and beyond, but in most cases studied to date resetting to the origin was assumed to take zero time or a time decoupled from the spatial position at the resetting moment. However, in our world, getting from one place to another always takes time and places that are further away take more time to be reached. We thus set off to extend the theory of stochastic resetting such that it would account for this inherent spatio-temporal coupling. We consider a particle that starts at the origin and follows a certain law o…
We consider diffusion under stochastic resetting to the origin in one dimension and compute the mean time to find both of two targets placed either side of the origin. A surprising result is that increasing the distance between two targets can decrease the overall search time. We compute the optimal arrangement of two targets in limiting cases. We generalise to obtain recursive expressions for the mean time to find all of multiple targets. We discuss the relevance to real-world problems of locating multiple targets such as proteins locating clusters of DNA lesions.
The canonical Evans--Majumdar model for diffusion with stochastic resetting to the origin assumes that resetting takes zero time: upon resetting the diffusing particle is teleported back to the origin to start its motion anew. However, in reality, getting from one place to another takes a finite amount of time which must be accounted for as diffusion with resetting already serves as a model for a myriad of processes in physics and beyond. Here we consider a situation where upon resetting the diffusing particle returns to the origin at a finite (rather than infinite) speed. This creates a coupl…
We investigate a stochastic search process in one, two, and three dimensions in which $N$ diffusing searchers that all start at $x_0$ seek a target at the origin. Each of the searchers is also reset to its starting point, either with rate $r$, or deterministically, with a reset time $T$. In one dimension and for a small number of searchers, the search time and the search cost are minimized at a non-zero optimal reset rate (or time), while for sufficiently large $N$, resetting always hinders the search. In general, a single searcher leads to the minimum search cost in one, two, and three dimens…
First passage of stochastic processes under resetting has recently been an active research topic in the field of statistical physics. However, most of previous studies mainly focused on the systems with continuous time and space. In this paper, we study the effect of stochastic resetting on first passage properties of discrete-time absorbing Markov chains, described by a transition matrix $\brm{Q}$ between transient states and a transition matrix $\brm{R}$ from transient states to absorbing states. Using a renewal approach, we exactly derive the unconditional mean first passage time (MFPT) to …
Stochastic processes offer a fundamentally different paradigm of dynamics than deterministic processes, the most prominent example of the latter being Newton's laws of motion. Here, we discuss in a pedagogical manner a simple and illustrative example of stochastic processes in the form of a particle undergoing standard Brownian diffusion, with the additional feature of the particle resetting repeatedly and at random times to its initial condition. Over the years, many different variants of this simple setting have been studied, all of which serve as illustrations of non-trivial and interesting…
We study the diffusive motion of a test particle in a two-dimensional comb structure consisting of a main backbone channel with continuously distributed side branches, in the presence of stochastic Markovian resetting to the initial position of the particle. We assume that the motion along the infinitely long branches is biased by a confining potential. The crossover to the steady state is quantified in terms of a large deviation function, which is derived for the first time for comb structures in present paper. We show that the relaxation region is demarcated by a nonlinear "light-cone" beyon…
Diffusion with stochastic resetting has recently emerged as a powerful modeling tool with a myriad of potential applications. Here, we study local time in this model, covering situations of free and biased diffusion with, and without, the presence of an absorbing boundary. Given a Brownian trajectory that evolved for $t$ units of time, the local time is simply defined as the total time the trajectory spent in a small vicinity of its initial position. However, as Brownian trajectories are stochastic --- the local time itself is a random variable which fluctuates round and about its mean value. …
We study the behaviour of a Symmetric Exclusion Process (SEP) in presence of stochastic resetting where the configuration of the system is reset to a step-like profile with a fixed rate $r.$ We show that the presence of resetting affects both the stationary and dynamical properties of SEP strongly. We compute the exact time-dependent density profile and show that the stationary state is characterized by a non-trivial inhomogeneous profile in contrast to the flat one for $r=0.$ We also show that for $r>0$ the average diffusive current grows linearly with time $t,$ in stark contrast to the $\sqr…
A stochastic process with movement, return, and rest phases is considered in this paper. For the movement phase, the particles move following the dynamics of Gaussian process or ballistic type of Lévy walk, and the time of each movement is random. For the return phase, the particles will move back to the origin with a constant velocity or acceleration or under the action of a harmonic force after each movement, so that this phase can also be treated as a non-instantaneous resetting. After each return, a rest with a random time at the origin follows. The asymptotic behaviors of the mean squared…
