We construct asymptotically free renormalization group trajectories for the generic nonabelian Higgs model in four-dimensional spacetime. These ultraviolet-complete trajectories become visible by generalizing the renormalization/boundary conditions in the definition of the correlation functions of the theory. Though they are accessible in a controlled weak-coupling analysis, these trajectories originate from threshold phenomena which are missed in a conventional perturbative analysis relying on the deep Euclidean region. We identify a candidate three-parameter family of renormalization group trajectories interconnecting the asymptotically free ultraviolet regime with a Higgs phase in the low-energy limit. We provide estimates of their low-energy properties in the light of a possible application to the standard model Higgs sector. Finally, we find a two-parameter subclass of asymptotically free Coleman-Weinberg-type trajectories that do not suffer from a naturalness problem.
Asymptotically free renormalization group trajectories can be constructed in nonabelian Higgs models with the aid of generalized boundary conditions imposed on the renormalized action. We detail this construction within the languages of simple low-order perturbation theory, effective field theory, as well as modern functional renormalization group equations. We construct a family of explicit scaling solutions using a controlled weak-coupling expansion in the ultraviolet, and obtain a standard Wilsonian RG relevance classification of perturbations about scaling solutions. We obtain global infor…
A dark sector resembling the standard model, where the abundance of matter is explained by baryon and lepton asymmetries, and stable constituents bind to form atoms, is a theoretically appealing possibility. We show that a minimal model with a hidden SU(2) gauge symmetry broken to U(1), with a Dirac fermion doublet, suffices to realize this scenario. Supplemented with a dark Higgs doublet that gets no VEV, we readily achieve the dark matter asymmetry through leptogenesis. The model can simultaneously have three portals to the standard model, through the Higgs, nonabelian kinetic mixing, and th…
There are indications that an asymptotically safe UV completion of the Standard Model with gravity could constrain the Higgs self-coupling, resulting in a prediction of the Higgs mass close to the vacuum stability bound in the Standard Model. The predicted value depends on the top quark mass and comes out somewhat higher than the experimental value if the current central value for the top quark mass is assumed. Beyond the Standard Model, the predicted value also depends on dark fields coupled through a Higgs portal. Here we study the Higgs self-coupling in a toy model of the Standard Model wit…
The effect of gravitational fluctuations on the quantum effective potential for scalar fields is a key ingredient for predictions of the mass of the Higgs boson, understanding the gauge hierarchy problem and a possible explanation of an---asymptotically---vanishing cosmological constant. We find that the quartic self-interaction of the Higgs scalar field is an irrelevant coupling at the asymptotically safe ultraviolet fixed point of quantum gravity. This renders the ratio between the masses of the Higgs boson and top quark predictable. If the flow of couplings below the Planck scale is approxi…
We construct a new inflation model in which the standard model Higgs boson couples minimally to gravity and acts as the inflaton. Our construction of Higgs inflation incorporates the standard model with Einstein gravity which exhibits asymptotic safety in the ultraviolet region. The slow roll condition is satisfied at large field value due to the asymptotically safe behavior of Higgs self-coupling at high energies. We find that this minimal construction is highly predictive, and is consistent with both cosmological observations and collider experiments.
We study the fixed point structure of the Higgs-Yukawa model, with its scalar being non-minimally coupled to the asymptotically safe gravity, using the functional renormalization group. We have obtained the renormalization group equations for the cosmological and Newton constants, the scalar mass-squared and quartic coupling constant, and the Yukawa and non-minimal coupling constants, taking into account all the scalar, fermion, and graviton loops. We find that switching on the fermionic quantum fluctuations makes the non-minimal coupling constant irrelevant around the Gaussian-matter fixed po…
Twin Higgs (TH) models explain the absence of new colored particles responsible for natural electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB). All known ultraviolet completions of TH models require some non-perturbative dynamics below the Planck scale. We propose a supersymmetric model in which the TH mechanism is introduced by a new asymptotically free gauge interaction. The model features natural EWSB for squarks and gluino heavier than 2 TeV even if supersymmetry breaking is mediated around the Planck scale, and has interesting flavor phenomenology including the top quark decay into the Higgs and the up…
It is pointed out that the top-quark and Higgs masses and the Higgs VEV satisfy with great accuracy the relations 4m_H^2=2m_T^2=v^2, which are very special and reminiscent of analogous ones at Argyres - Douglas points with enhanced conformal symmetry. Furthermore, the RG evolution of the corresponding Higgs self-interaction and Yukawa couplings λ(0)=1/8 and y(0)=1 leads to the free-field stable point λ(M_Pl)= \dot λ(M_Pl)=0 in the pure scalar sector at the Planck scale, also suggesting enhanced conformal symmetry. Thus, it is conceivable that the Standard Model is the low-energy limit of a dis…
We extend the list of theories featuring a rigorous interacting ultraviolet fixed point by constructing the first theory featuring a Higgs-like scalar with gauge, Yukawa and quartic interactions. We show that the theory enters a perturbative asymptotically safe regime at energies above a physical scale $Λ$. We determine the salient properties of the theory and use it as a concrete example to test whether scalars masses unavoidably receive quantum correction of order $Λ$. Having at our dispose a calculable model allowing us to precisely relate the IR and UV of the theory we demonstrate that the…
A phenomenologically viable theory of quantum gravity must accommodate all observed matter degrees of freedom and their properties. Here, we explore whether a toy model of the Higgs-Yukawa sector of the Standard Model is compatible with asymptotically safe quantum gravity. We discuss the phenomenological implications of our result in the context of the Standard Model. We analyze the quantum scaling dimension of the system, and find an irrelevant Yukawa coupling at a joint gravity-matter fixed point. Further, we explore the impact of gravity-induced couplings between scalars and fermions, which…
Motivated by new ideas about the Higgs mass naturalness problem, we present realistic TeV-scale extensions of the Standard Model, into the gauge group SU(3)_L x SU(3)_R x SU(3)_c, such that all gauge, Yukawa and quartic couplings can be extrapolated up to infinite energy. Three generations of chiral fermions and Higgses are needed, as well as some extra fermion.
We study different types of Two Higgs Doublet Models (2HDMs) under the assumption that all quartic couplings' beta functions vanish simultaneously at the Planck scale. The Standard Model seems to display this property almost accidentally, because the Higgs boson mass is close to 125 GeV. This also ties closely into the question of whether the theory is stable or metastable. We investigate if such "fixed points" can exist in various $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric 2HDM subclasses, and if the theories that meet these conditions are phenomenologically viable, as well as vacuum stable. We find that the f…
We minimally extend the Standard Model field content by adding new vector-like fermions at the TeV scale to allow gauge coupling unification at a realistic scale. We embed the model into a $SU(5)$ grand unified theory that is asymptotically safe and features an interacting fixed point for the gauge coupling. There are no Landau poles of the $U(1)$ gauge and Higgs couplings. Gauge, Yukawa and Higgs couplings are retraced from the fixed point and matched at the grand unification scale to those of the Standard Model rescaled up to the same energy. All couplings, their fixed point values and criti…
We present and discuss the "Tetrad Model", a large colour/flavour embedding of the Standard model which has an interacting ultraviolet fixed point. It is shown that its extended-Pati-Salam symmetry is broken radiatively via the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, while the remaining electroweak symmetry is broken when mass-squared terms run negative. In the IR the theory yields just the Standard Model, augmented by the fact that the Higgs fields carry the same generation indices as the matter fields. It is also shown that the Higgs mass-squareds develop a hierarchical structure in the IR, from a UV th…
Recent studies have provided evidence for the existence of new asymptotically free trajectories in non-Abelian particle models without asymptotic symmetry in the high-energy limit. We extend these results to a general ${\rm SU}(N_{\rm L})\times {\rm SU}(N_{\rm c})$ Higgs-Yukawa model that includes the non-Abelian sector of the standard model, finding further confirmation for such scenarios for a wide class of regularizations that account for threshold behavior persisting to highest energies. We construct these asymptotically free trajectories within conventional $\overline{\text{MS}}$ schemes …
We explore the phenomenology of scalar fields coupled to asymptotically safe quantum gravity, in light of their potential significance for dark matter, for the inflaton as well as dynamical dark energy, and in the Higgs sector in and beyond the Standard Model. This work is a step towards delineating the boundaries of the asymptotically safe swampland by exploiting the constraining power of the asymptotic-safety paradigm. Firstly, we strengthen indications that quantum gravitational fluctuations could drive scalar potentials towards flatness, with intriguing potential implications for inflation…
The gauge hierarchy problem could find a solution within the scenario of asymptotic safety for quantum gravity. We discuss a "resurgence mechanism" where the running dimensionless coupling responsible for the Higgs scalar mass first decreases in the ultraviolet regime and subsequently increases in the infrared regime. A gravity induced large anomalous dimension plays a crucial role for the required "self-tuned criticality" in the ultraviolet regime beyond the Planck scale.
We consider possible extensions of the standard model that are not only completely asymptotically free, but are such that the UV fixed point is completely UV attractive. All couplings flow towards a set of fixed ratios in the UV. Motivated by low scale unification, semi-simple gauge groups with elementary scalars in various representations are explored. The simplest model is a version of the Pati-Salam model. The Higgs boson is truly elementary but dynamical symmetry breaking from strong interactions may be needed at the unification scale. A hierarchy problem, much reduced from grand unified t…
