We investigate chiral Higgs-Yukawa models with a non-abelian gauged left-handed sector reminiscent to a sub-sector of the standard model. We discover a new weak-coupling fixed-point behavior that allows for ultraviolet complete RG trajectories which can be connected with a conventional long-range infrared behavior in the Higgs phase. This non-trivial ultraviolet behavior is characterized by asymptotic freedom in all interaction couplings, but a quasi conformal behavior in all mass-like parameters. The stable microscopic scalar potential asymptotically approaches flatness in the ultraviolet, however, with a non-vanishing minimum increasing inversely proportional to the asymptotically free gauge coupling. This gives rise to nonperturbative -- though weak-coupling -- threshold effects which induce ultraviolet stability along a line of fixed points. Despite the weak-coupling properties, the system exhibits non-Gaussian features which are distinctly different from its standard perturbative counterpart: e.g., on a branch of the line of fixed points, we find linear instead of quadratically running renormalization constants. Whereas the Fermi constant and the top mass are naturally of the same order of magnitude, our model generically allows for light Higgs boson masses. Realistic mass ratios are related to particular RG trajectories with a "walking" mid-momentum regime.
We consider a model with gauged baryon number that may be rendered asymptotically safe when gravitational effects above the Planck scale are taken into account. We study the ultraviolet fixed points in this theory and determine the restrictions on the parameter space of the model at the TeV scale following from the requirement that the asymptotic fixed points are reached. Assuming that the new gauge symmetry is broken at the TeV scale, we comment on the phenomenological implications of these restrictions.
We study the beta functions of the leading, two-derivative terms of the left-gauged SU(N) nonlinear sigma-model in d dimensions. In d>2, we find the usual Gaussian ultraviolet fixed point for the gauge coupling and an attractive non-Gaussian fixed point for the Goldstone boson coupling. The position of the latter fixed point controls the chiral expansion, unitarity and the strength of the tree-level Goldstone boson scattering amplitudes. Attention is paid to the gauge- and scheme-dependence of the results.
The Yukawa model in curved spacetime is considered. We consider a complex scalar field coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field and also interacting with Dirac fields with a general Yukawa coupling. The local momentum space method is used to obtain the one-loop effective action and we adopt the gauge condition independent background field method introduced by Vilkovisky and DeWitt. The pole parts of the one-loop effective action that depend on the background scalar field, that we do not assume to be constant, are found and used to calculate the counterterms and to determine the relevant renormalization…
We investigate the high temperature fate of four dimensional gauge-Yukawa theories featuring short distance conformality of either interacting or non-interacting nature. The latter is known as complete asymptotic freedom and, as templates, we consider non-abelian gauge theories featuring either two singlet scalars coupled to gauged fermions via Yukawa interactions or two gauged scalars with(out) fermions. For theories with interacting fixed points at short distance, known as asymptotically safe, we consider two calculable examples. Exploring the landscape of safe and free theories above we dis…
Effective field theory provides a new perspective on the predictive power of Renormalization Group fixed points. Critical trajectories between different fixed points confine the regions of UV-complete, IR-complete, as well as conformal theories. The associated boundary surfaces cannot be crossed by the Renormalization Group flow of any effective field theory. We delineate cases in which the boundary surface acts as an infrared attractor for generic effective field theories. Gauge-Yukawa theories serve as an example that is both perturbative and of direct phenomenological interest. We identify …
We introduce Weinberg's idea of asymptotic safety and pave the way towards an asymptotically safe chiral Yukawa system with a $U(N_L)_L \otimes U(1)_R$ symmetry in a leading-order derivative expansion using nonperturbative functional RG equations. As a toy model sharing important features with the standard model we explicitely discuss N_L=10 for which we find a non-Gaussian fixed point and compute its critical exponents. We observe a reduced hierarchy problem as well as predictions for the toy Higgs and the toy top mass.
The possibility to construct an inflationary universe scenario for the finite-scale gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model is investigated. This model can be described by the Higgs-Yukawa type interaction model with the corresponding compositeness scale. Therefore, the one-loop Higgs-Yukawa effective potential is used with the compositeness condition for the study of inflationary dynamics. We evaluate the fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background for the model with a finite compositeness scale in the slow-roll approximation. We find the remarkable dependence on the gauge group and the number of…
We search for asymptotic safety in a Yukawa system with a chiral $U(N_L)_L\otimes U(1)_R$ symmetry, serving as a toy model for the standard-model Higgs sector. Using the functional RG as a nonperturbative tool, the leading-order derivative expansion exhibits admissible non-Ga\ssian fixed-points for $1 \leq N_L \leq 57$ which arise from a conformal threshold behavior induced by self-balanced boson-fermion fluctuations. If present in the full theory, the fixed-point would solve the triviality problem. Moreover, as one fixed point has only one relevant direction even with a reduced hierarchy prob…
The nature of dark matter and the fundamental quantum structure of spacetime could be directly linked in the asymptotic-safety framework. A toy model for the visible Higgs-Yukawa sector of the Standard Model, coupled to a dark sector through a portal coupling, provides a very first example for a model that simultaneously i) could become asymptotically safe at non-vanishing portal coupling, ii) could feature a strongly enhanced predictive power with calculable values for all interactions and thereby iii) give rise to calculable relations between the masses of the dark particles, their self-inte…
We investigate the gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in curved spacetime at the large $N_c$ limit and in slow-roll approximation. The model can be described by the renormalization group corrected gauge-Higgs-Yukawa theory with the corresponding compositeness conditions. Evaluating the renormalization group (RG) improved effective action, we show that such model can produce CMB fluctuations and find inflationary parameters: spectral index, tensor-to-scalar-ratio and running of the spectral index. We demonstrate that the model can naturally satisfy the Planck 2015 data and maybe considered as an a…
We study asymptotic safety of models of the higher derivative quantum gravity with and without matter. The beta functions are derived by utilizing the functional renormalization group, and non-trivial fixed points are found. It turns out that all couplings in gravity sector, namely the cosmological constant, the Newton constant, and the $R^2$ and $R_{μν}^2$ coupling constants, are relevant in case of higher derivative pure gravity. For the Higgs-Yukawa model non-minimal coupled with higher derivative gravity, we find a stable fixed point at which the scalar-quartic and the Yukawa coupling cons…
The standard model particles can be gauged in an anomaly free way by three possible gauge symmetries namely ${L_e-L_μ}$, ${L_e-L_τ}$, and ${L_μ-L_τ}$. Of these, ${L_e-L_μ}$ and ${L_e-L_τ}$ forces can mediate between the Sun and the planets and change the perihelion precession of planetary orbits. It is well known that a deviation from the $1/r^2$ Newtonian force can give rise to a perihelion advancement in the planetary orbit, for instance, as in the well known case of Einstein's gravity which was tested from the observation of the perihelion advancement of the Mercury. We consider the long ra…
The measurements of the muon and electron anomalous magnetic moments hint at physics beyond the standard model. We show why and how models inspired by asymptotic safety can explain deviations from standard model predictions naturally. Our setup features an enlarged scalar sector and Yukawa couplings between leptons and new vector-like fermions. Using the complete two-loop running of couplings, we observe a well-behaved high energy limit of models including a stabilization of the Higgs. We find that a manifest breaking of lepton universality beyond standard model Yukawas is not necessary to exp…
Using the exact formula for the A-twisted correlation functions of the two dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ gauged linear sigma model, we reconsider the computation of the B-model Yukawa couplings of the local toric Calabi-Yau varieties. Our analysis is based on an exact result that has been evaluated from the supersymmetric localization technique and careful treatment of its application. We provide a detailed description of a procedure to investigate the local B-model Yukawa couplings and also test our prescription by comparing the results with known expressions evaluated from the local mirror…
We discover that asymptotically safe quantum gravity could predict the top-quark mass. For a broad range of microscopic gravitational couplings, quantum gravity could provide an ultraviolet completion for the Standard Model by triggering asymptotic freedom in the gauge couplings and bottom Yukawa and asymptotic safety in the top-Yukawa and Higgs-quartic coupling. We find that in a part of this range, a difference of the top and bottom mass of approximately $170\, \rm GeV$ is generated and the Higgs mass is determined in terms of the top mass. Assuming no new physics below the Planck scale, we …
Using Majorana fermions and elementary mesons we find new massless quantum field theories with weakly interacting ultraviolet fixed points. We also find new classes of large N equivalences amongst SU, SO and Sp gauge theories with different types of matter fields and Yukawa interactions. Results include a triality of asymptotically safe theories and dualities between asymptotically free matter-gauge theories with identical fixed points, phase diagrams, and scaling exponents. Implications for conformal field theory and orbifold reductions are indicated.
We classify the weakly interacting fixed points of general gauge theories coupled to matter and explain how the competition between gauge and matter fluctuations gives rise to a rich spectrum of high- and low-energy fixed points. The pivotal role played by Yukawa couplings is emphasized. Necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic safety of gauge theories are also derived, in conjunction with strict no go theorems. Implications for phase diagrams of gauge theories and physics beyond the Standard Model are indicated.
It was recently shown that certain perturbatively accessible, non-supersymmetric gauge-Yukawa theories have UV asymptotic safety, without asymptotic freedom: the UV theory is an interacting RG fixed point, and the IR theory is free. We here investigate the possibility of asymptotic safety in supersymmetric theories, and use unitarity bounds, and the a-theorem, to rule it out in broad classes of theories. The arguments apply without assuming perturbation theory. Therefore, the UV completion of a non-asymptotically free susy theory must have additional, non-obvious degrees of freedom, such as th…
Integrality in the Hodge theory of Calabi-Yau fourfolds is essential to find the vacuum structure and the anomaly cancellation mechanism of four dimensional F-theory compactifications. We use the Griffiths-Frobenius geometry and homological mirror symmetry to fix the integral monodromy basis in the primitive horizontal subspace of Calabi-Yau fourfolds. The Gamma class and supersymmetric localization calculations in the 2d gauged linear sigma model on the hemisphere are used to check and extend this method. The result allows us to study the superpotential and the Weil-Petersson metric and an as…
Building on recent advances in the understanding of gauge-Yukawa theories we explore possibilities to UV-complete the Standard Model in an asymptotically safe manner. Minimal extensions are based on a large flavor sector of additional fermions coupled to a scalar singlet matrix field. We find that asymptotic safety requires fermions in higher representations of $SU(3)_C\times SU(2)_L$. Possible signatures at colliders are worked out and include $R$-hadron searches, diboson signatures and the evolution of the strong and weak coupling constants.
Constraining quantum gravity from observations is a challenge. We expand on the idea that the interplay of quantum gravity with matter could be key to meeting this challenge. Thus, we set out to confront different potential candidates for quantum gravity -- unimodular asymptotic safety, Weyl-squared gravity and asymptotically safe gravity -- with constraints arising from demanding an ultraviolet complete Standard Model. Specifically, we show that within approximations, demanding that quantum gravity solves the Landau-pole problems in Abelian gauge couplings and Yukawa couplings strongly constr…
Asymptotic safety generalizes asymptotic freedom and could contribute to understanding physics beyond the Standard Model. It is a candidate scenario to provide an ultraviolet extension for the effective quantum field theory of gravity through an interacting fixed point of the Renormalization Group. Recently, asymptotic safety has been established in specific gauge-Yukawa models in four dimensions in perturbation theory, providing a starting point for asymptotically safe model building. Moreover, an asymptotically safe fixed point might even be induced in the Standard Model under the impact of …
We provide an asymptotically safe Pati-Salam embedding of the Standard Model. Safety is achieved by adding to the theory gauged vector-like fermions and by employing recently developed large number-of-flavor techniques and results. We show that the gauge, scalar quartic and Yukawa couplings achieve an interacting ultraviolet fixed point below the Planck scale. The minimal model is a relevant example of a Standard Model extension in which unification of all type of couplings occurs because of a dynamical principle, i.e. the presence of an ultraviolet fixed point. This extension differs from the…
