In this paper, we revisit approximation properties of piecewise polynomial spaces, which contain more than ${\cal P}_{r-1}$ but not ${\cal P}_r$. We develop more accurate upper and lower error bounds that are sharper than those used in literature. These new error bounds, especially the lower bounds are particular useful to finite element methods. As an important application, we establish sharp lower bounds of the discretization error for Laplace and $2m$-th order elliptic eigenvalue problems in various finite element spaces under shape regular triangulations, and investigate the asymptotic convergence behavior for large numerical eigenvalue approximations.
In this paper, we want to clarify the Gibbs phenomenon when continuous and discontinuous finite elements are used to approximate discontinuous or nearly discontinuous PDE solutions from the approximation point of view. For a simple step function, we explicitly compute its continuous and discontinuous piecewise constant or linear projections on discontinuity matched or non-matched meshes. For the simple discontinuity-aligned mesh case, piecewise discontinuous approximations are always good. For the general non-matched case, we explain that the piecewise discontinuous constant approximation comb…
The probability density function (PDF) associated with a given set of samples is approximated by a piecewise-linear polynomial constructed with respect to a binning of the sample space. The kernel functions are a compactly supported basis for the space of such polynomials, i.e. finite element hat functions, that are centered at the bin nodes rather than at the samples, as is the case for the standard kernel density estimation approach. This feature naturally provides an approximation that is scalable with respect to the sample size. On the other hand, unlike other strategies that use a finite …
In the present work, we consider weakly-singular integral equations arising from linear second-order strongly-elliptic PDE systems with constant coefficients, including, e.g., linear elasticity. We introduce a general framework for optimal convergence of adaptive Galerkin BEM. We identify certain abstract properties for the underlying meshes, the corresponding mesh-refinement strategy, and the ansatz spaces that guarantee convergence at optimal algebraic rate of an adaptive algorithm driven by the weighted-residual error. These properties are satisfied, e.g., for discontinuous piecewise polyno…
We consider the discretization of elliptic boundary-value problems by variational physics-informed neural networks (VPINNs), in which test functions are continuous, piecewise linear functions on a triangulation of the domain. We define an a posteriori error estimator, made of a residual-type term, a loss-function term, and data oscillation terms. We prove that the estimator is both reliable and efficient in controlling the energy norm of the error between the exact and VPINN solutions. Numerical results are in excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions.
We consider the time discretization of a linear parabolic problem by the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method using piecewise polynomials of degree at most $r-1$ in $t$, for $r\ge1$ and with maximum step size~$k$. It is well known that the spatial $L_2$-norm of the DG error is of optimal order $k^r$ globally in time, and is, for $r\ge2$, superconvergent of order $k^{2r-1}$ at the nodes. We show that on the $n$th subinterval $(t_{n-1},t_n)$, the dominant term in the DG error is proportional to the local right Radau polynomial of degree $r$. This error profile implies that the DG error is of order…
In this paper, we revisit Korn's inequality for the piecewise $H^1$ space based on general polygonal or polyhedral decompositions of the domain. Our Korn's inequality is expressed with minimal jump terms. These minimal jump terms are identified by characterizing the restriction of rigid body mode to edge/face of the partitions. Such minimal jump conditions are shown to be sharp for achieving the Korn's inequality as well. The sharpness of our result and explicitly given minimal conditions can be used to test whether any given finite element spaces satisfy Korn's inequality, immediately as well…
When solving linear systems arising from PDE discretizations, iterative methods (such as Conjugate Gradient, GMRES, or MINRES) are often the only practical choice. To converge in a small number of iterations, however, they have to be coupled with an efficient preconditioner. The efficiency of the preconditioner depends largely on its accuracy on the eigenvectors corresponding to small eigenvalues, and unfortunately, black-box methods typically cannot guarantee sufficient accuracy on these eigenvectors. Thus, constructing the preconditioner becomes a problem-dependent task. However, for a large…
We adopt the integral definition of the fractional Laplace operator and analyze an optimal control problem for a fractional semilinear elliptic partial differential equation (PDE); control constraints are also considered. We establish the well-posedness of fractional semilinear elliptic PDEs and analyze regularity properties and suitable finite element discretizations. Within the setting of our optimal control problem, we derive the existence of optimal solutions as well as first and second order optimality conditions; regularity estimates for the optimal variables are also analyzed. We devise…
We present a numerical method for computing the solution of a partial differential equation (PDE) for modeling acoustic pressure, known as an extra-wide angle parabolic equation, that features the square root of a differential operator. The differential operator is the negative of an indefinite Schrödinger operator with a piecewise constant potential. This work primarily deals with the 3-piece case; however, a generalization is made the case of an arbitrary number of pieces. Through restriction to a judiciously chosen lower-dimensional subspace, approximate eigenfunctions are used to obtain es…
This work is devoted to the nonlinear inverse problem of identifying the reaction coefficient in an elliptic boundary value problem from single Cauchy data on a part of the boundary. We then examine simultaneously two elliptic boundary value problems generated from the available Cauchy data. The output least squares method with the Tikhonov regularization is applied to find approximations of the sought coefficient. We discretize the PDEs with piecewise linear finite elements. The stability and convergence of this technique are then established. A numerical experiment is presented to illustrate…
For a well-posed non-selfadjoint indefinite second-order linear elliptic PDE with general coefficients $\mathbf A, \mathbf b,γ$ in $L^\infty$ and symmetric and uniformly positive definite coefficient matrix $\mathbf A$, this paper proves that mixed finite element problems are uniquely solvable and the discrete solutions are uniformly bounded, whenever the underlying shape-regular triangulation is sufficiently fine. This applies to the Raviart-Thomas (RT) and Brezzi-Douglas-Marini (BDM) finite element families of any order and in any space dimension and leads to the best-approximation estimate …
In this paper we investigate a priori error estimates for the space-time Galerkin finite element discretization of an optimal control problem governed by a simplified linear gradient enhanced damage model. The model equations are of a special structure as the state equation consists of an elliptic PDE which has to be fulfilled at almost all times coupled with an ODE that has to hold true in almost all points in space. The state equation is discretized by a piecewise constant discontinuous Galerkin method in time and usual conforming linear finite elements in space. For the discretization of th…

Several novel imaging and non-destructive testing technologies are based on reconstructing the spatially dependent coefficient in an elliptic partial differential equation from measurements of its solution(s). In practical applications, the unknown coefficient is often assumed to be piecewise constant on a given pixel partition (corresponding to the desired resolution), and only finitely many measurements can be made. This leads to the problem of inverting a finite-dimensional non-linear forward operator $\mathcal F:\ \mathcal D(\mathcal F)\subseteq \mathbb R^n\to \mathbb R^m$, where evaluatin…
In this paper we revisit the Restricted Additive Schwarz method for solving discretized Helmholtz problems, using impedance boundary conditions on subdomains (sometimes called ORAS). We present this method in its variational form and show that it can be seen as a finite element discretization of a parallel overlapping domain decomposition method defined at the PDE level. In a fourthcoming paper, the authors have proved certain contractive properties of the error propagation operator for this method at the PDE level, under certain geometrical assumptions. We illustrate computationally that thes…
We consider energy stable summation by parts finite difference methods (SBP-FD) for the homogeneous and piecewise homogeneous dynamic beam equation (DBE). Previously the constant coefficient problem has been solved with SBP-FD together with penalty terms (SBP-SAT) to impose boundary conditions. In this work we revisit this problem and compare SBP-SAT to the projection method (SBP-P). We also consider the DBE with discontinuous coefficients and present novel SBP-SAT, SBP-P and hybrid SBP-SAT-P discretizations for imposing interface conditions. Numerical experiments show that all methods conside…
We adopt the integral definition of the fractional Laplace operator and analyze solution techniques for fractional, semilinear, and elliptic optimal control problems posed on Lipschitz polytopes. We consider two strategies of discretization: a semidiscrete scheme where the admissible control set is not discretized and a fully discrete scheme where such a set is discretized with piecewise constant functions. As an instrumental step, we derive error estimates for finite element discretizations of fractional semilinear elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) on quasi-uniform and graded mes…
