The design of the NuSTORM muon production beam line and storage ring is discussed. The facility includes a pion production target station with a pion collection horn and transport into a straight section of a storage ring. π decay within that straight section provides μ's that are stored within the ring for subsequent decay providing precision electron and muon neutrino beams. The ring and transport designs are described and optimized. Genetic Algorithm optimization of the horn and transport into the ring has been performed, providing a significant increase in intensity
The goal of nuSTORM is to provide well-defined neutrino beams for precise measurements of neutrino cross-sections and oscillations. The nuSTORM decay ring is a compact racetrack storage ring with a circumference of ~480 m that incorporates large aperture (60 cm diameter) magnets. There are many challenges in the design. In order to incorporate the Orbit Combination Section (OCS), used for injecting the pion beam into the ring, a dispersion suppressor is needed adjacent to the OCS. Concurrently, in order to maximize the number of useful muon decays, strong bending dipoles are needed in the arcs…
The neutrino beam produced from muons decaying in a storage ring would be an ideal tool for precise neutrino cross section measurements and search for sterile neutrinos due to its precisely known flavour content and spectrum. In the proposed nuSTORM facility pions would be directly injected into a racetrack storage ring, where circulating muon beam would be captured. The storage ring has two options: a FODO solution with large aperture quadrupoles and a racetrack FFAG (Fixed Field Alternating Gradient) using the recent developments in FFAGs. Machine parameters, linear optics design and beam dy…

Injection performance of storage ring is one of the important factors for the light efficiency and quality of Synchrotron Radiation Facility when it is in top-up mode. To evaluate the injection performance of storage ring at SSRF, we build a bunch-by-bunch position measuring system based on oscilloscope IOC. Accurate assessment of energy mismatching, distribution of residual oscillation and angle error of injection kickers can be achieved by this system.
The multi-bunch injection has been adopt at SSRF which greatly increases the injection rate and reduces injection time compared to the single bunch injection. The multi-bunch injection will massively reduce the beam failure time during users operation and prolong pulsed injection hardware lifetime. In this paper, the scheme to produce multi bunches for the RF electron gun is described. The refilling result and the beam orbit stability for top up operation is discussed.
The ALS-U light source will implement on-axis single-train swap-out injection employing an accumulator between the booster and storage rings. The accumulator ring design is a twelve period triple-bend achromat that will be installed along the inner circumference of the storage-ring tunnel. A non-conventional injection scheme will be utilized for top-off off-axis injection from the booster into the accumulator ring meant to accommodate a large $\sim 300$~nm emittance beam into a vacuum-chamber with a limiting horizontal aperture radius as small as $8$ mm. The scheme incorporates three dipole ki…
We report on an injection feedback scheme for the ThomX storage ring project. ThomX is a 50-MeV-electron accelerator prototype which will use Compton backscattering in a storage ring to generate a high flux of hard X-rays. Given the slow beam damping (in the ring), the injection must be performed with high accuracy to avoid large betatron oscillations. A homemade analytic code is used to compute the corrections that need to be applied before the beam injection to achieve a beam position accuracy of a few hundred micrometers in the first beam position monitors (BPMs). In order to do so the code…
We suggest a new on-axis injection scheme that uses two deflecting cavities to remove the tilt of the stored beam, and to kick the injected beam into the ring. In this new injection scheme, an injected beam with a certain angle is overlaid on the stored beam position in transverse phase space through the second deflecting cavity. (Note that the injected beam has separated phase with the stored beam in longitudinal phase space). We present theoretical analysis and numerical simulations of the stored beam and injected beam with the new injection scheme.
The injection control system of Hefei Light Source (HLS) storage ring is a subsystem of the upgraded HLS control system, which is based upon EPICS. Three programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are used as device controllers, which control one septum modulator and four kicker modulators of HLS storage ring. An Industrial PC is used as Input/Output Controller (IOC) and it connects the PLCs with serial communication (RS232 mode) over fibre. A PC with Linux is used as operator interface (OPI), operator application are running on it. The control system was completed in July 2000. The commissioning s…
In the fourth-generation storage ring light sources (4GLSs), associated with the extremely strong nonlinearities inherent in the multi-bend achromat design, the dynamic acceptance is usually small and it is difficult to implement traditional off-axis local-bump injection. To release the requirement on dynamic acceptance, on-axis longitudinal injection schemes have been explored. In this paper, we present a multi-objective optimization of longitudinal injection with a multi-frequency RF system, based on the parameters of the Southern Advanced Photon Source, a 4GLS proposed in China. We show tha…
We have evaluated the data-efficient Bayesian optimization method for the specific task of injection tuning in a circular accelerator. In this paper, we describe the implementation of this method at the Karlsruhe Research Accelerator with up to nine tuning parameters, including the determination of the associated hyperparameters. We show that the Bayesian optimization method outperforms manual tuning and the commonly used Nelder-Mead optimization algorithm both in simulation and experiment. The algorithm was also successfully used to ease the commissioning phase after the installation of new i…
An on-axis injection scheme using a double-frequency RF system in a storage ring with small dynamic aperture is proposed. By altering RF voltages, empty RF buckets can be created which will be used for on-axis injection. After bunches are injected, a reverse RF voltage altering process is performed and the injected bunches can be longitudinally dumped to the main RF buckets. The scheme allows reaping the advantages of the on-axis injection while still performing accumulation.
We report here the results of a one week long investigation into the conceptual design of an X-ray source based on a compact ring with on-orbit and on-energy laser-plasma accelerator. We performed these studies during the June 2016 USPAS class "Physics of Accelerators, Lasers, and Plasma..." applying the art of inventiveness TRIZ. We describe three versions of the light source with the constraints of the electron beam with energy $1\,\rm{GeV}$ or $3\,\rm{GeV}$ and a magnetic lattice design being normal conducting (only for the $1\,\rm{GeV}$ beam) or superconducting (for either beam). The elect…
High luminosity in DAFNE needs very high electron and positron currents stored. A full energy (510 MeV) injection system composed by a full energy electron and positron linac and an accumulator-damping ring is presently used. The electron and positron beams, alternatively accelerated by the linac, are injected and stacked in the accumulator with high efficiency thanks to its large acceptance and short damping time. The damped beams are extracted and transferred to the main ring through a long transfer line that has been built inside already existing buildings. The refill time of the collider i…
In this paper we present the physical design of the pulsed sextupole injection system for Beijing Advanced Photon Source (BAPS) with an ultralow emittance. The BAPS ring lattice is designed in such a way that two options of pulsed sextupole injection are allowed, i.e., with septum and pulsed sextupole in different drift spaces or in the same drift space. We give the magnetic parameters of the injection system and the optimal condition of the optical functions for both options. In addition, we find that the pulsed sextupole induces position-dependent dispersive effect and causes non-ignorable e…
A new accelerator complex, HIAF (the High Intensity Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility), has been approved in China. It is designed to provide intense primary and radioactive ion beams for research in high energy density physics, nuclear physics, atomic physics as well as other applications. In order to achieve a high intensity of up to 5e11 ppp 238U34+, the Compression Ring (CRing) needs to stack more than 5 bunches transferred from the Booster Ring (BRing). However, the normal bucket to bucket injection scheme can only achieve an intensity gain of 2, so an injection method, fixed barrier bucket …

In this paper, we will present detailed modifications for further optimization of Recycler lattice which requires the investigation of tune footprint and dynamic aperture based on higher order momentum components of the magnetic fields, together with the space charge effects.
The China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) uses H- stripping and phase space painting method to fill large ring acceptance with the linac beam of small emittance. The dependence of the painting beam on the injection beam parameters was studied for the Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) of CSNS. The injection processes for different momentum spread, rms emittance of the injection beam, injection beam matching were simulated, then the beam losses, 99% and rms emittances were obtained and the optimized ranges of injection beam parameters were given. The interaction between the H- beam and the stripp…
We have measured the total energy spread (99 persent energy spread) of the Booster beam at its injection energy of 400 MeV by three different methods - 1) creating a notch of about 40 nsec wide in the beam immediately after multiple turn injection and measuring the slippage time required for high and low momentum particles for a grazing touch in line-charge distribution, 2) injecting partial turn beam and letting it to debunch, and 3) comparing the beam profile monitor data with predictions from MAD simulations for the 400 MeV injection beam line. The measurements are repeated under varieties …
The FNAL accelerator complex is poised to reach MW neutrino beams on target for the exploration of the dark sector physics and rare physics program spaces. Future operations of the complex will include CW linac operations at beam intensities that have not been seen before \cite{PIP2,RCS_LOI}. The ambitious beam program relies on multi-turn H$^{-}$ injection into the FNAL Booster and then extracted into delivery rings or the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) 8 GeV HEP program. A new rapid-cycling synchrotron (RCS) will be required to reach the LBNF goal of 2.4 MW because of intense space-charge limit…
The concept of a storage ring with toroidal magnetic field was presented in the two previous EPAC conferences. Here we report the first results of experiments performed with beam transport in toroidal magnetic fields and details of the injection system. The beam transport experiments were carried out with 30 degree toroidal segments with an axial magnetic field of 0.6T. The multi turn injection system relies on a transverse injection coil together with an electric kicker system.
Electron storage rings used for the production of synchrotron radiation (SR) have an output photon brightness that is limited by the equilibrium beam emittance. By using interleaved injection and ejection of bunches from a source with repetition rate greater than 1 kHz, we show that it is practicable to overcome this limit in rings of energy ~1 GeV. Sufficiently short kicker pulse lengths enable effective currents of many milliamperes, which can deliver a significant flux of diffraction-limited soft X-ray photons. Thus, either existing SR facilities may be adapted for non-equilibrium operation…
As part of the R\&D for the 50 MeV ThomX Compton source project, we have studied the effect of several beam dynamics processes on the evolution of the beam in the ring. The processes studied include among others Compton scattering, intrabeam scattering, coherent synchrotron radiation. We have performed extensive simulations of a full injection/extraction cycle (400000 turns). We show how each of these processes degrades the flux of photons produced and how a feedback system contributes to recovering most of the flux.
A new generation of storage ring-based light source, called diffraction-limited storage ring (DLSR), with the emittance approaching the diffraction limit for multi-keV photons by using the multi-bend achromat lattice, has attracted worldwide and extensive studies of several laboratories, and been seriously considered as a goal of upgrading the existing facilities in the imminent future. Among various DLSR proposals, the PEPX design based on the third-order achromat concept and with the special design of a high-beta injection straight section demonstrated that, it is feasible to achieve suffici…
The CLIC (Compact Linear Collider) RF power source is based on a new scheme of electron pulse compression and bunch frequency multiplication using injection by transverse RF deflectors into an isochronous ring. In this paper, we describe the modifications needed in the present LEP Pre-Injector (LPI) complex at CERN in order to perform a low-charge test of the scheme. The design of the injector (including the new thermionic gun), of the modified linac, of the matched injection line, and of the isochronous ring lattice, are presented. The results of preliminary isochronicity measurements made on…
We discuss the approach of generating round beams for ultimate storage rings using vertical damping wigglers (with horizontal magnetic field). The vertical damping wigglers provide damping and excite vertical emittance. This eliminates the need to generate large linear coupling that is impractical with traditional off-axis injection. We use a PEP-X compatible lattice to demonstrate the approach. This lattice uses separate quadrupole and sextupole magnets with realistic gradient strengths. Intrabeam scattering effects are calculated. The horizontal and vertical emittances are 22.3 pm and 10.3 p…
The beam transport experiments in toroidal magnets were first described in EPAC08 [1] within the framework of a proposed low energy ion storage ring at Frankfurt University. The experiments with two room temperature 30 degree toroids are needed to design the accumulator ring with closed longitudinal magnetic field levels up to 6-8 T. The test setup aims on developing a ring injection system. The primary beam line for the experiments was installed and successfully commissioned in 2009. A special probe for ion beam detection was installed. This modular technique allows online diagnostics of the …
The challenging High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) beam requirements will lead in the future to unprecedented beam parameters along the LHC injector chain. In the SPS accelerator these requests translate into about a factor two higher intensity and brightness than the present design performance. In addition to the challenge of producing and accelerating such beams, these parameters affect the resistance of the existing equipment against beam impact. Most of the protection devices in the SPS ring, its transfer lines and the LHC injection areas will be put under operational constraints which are beyon…
The Advanced Photon Source is in the process of up-grading its storage ring from a double-bend to a multi-bend lattice as part of the APS Upgrade Project (APS-U). A swap-out injection scheme is planned for the APS-U to keep a constant beam current and to enable a small dynamic aperture. A novel concept that cancels out the effect of leakage field inside the stored beam chamber was introduced in the design of the septum magnet. As a result, the horizontal deflecting angle of the stored beam was reduced to below 1 micro-rad with a 2 mm septum thick-ness and 1.06T normal injection field. The conc…
Using calculations and mathematical modeling, we demonstrate the feasibility of constructing a synchrotron storage ring for neutral polar molecules. The lattice is a racetrack type 3.6 m in circumference consisting of two of 180-degree arcs, six bunchers, and two long straight sections. Each straight section contains two triplet focusing lenses and space for beam injection and experiments. The design also includes a matched injector and a linear decelerator. Up to 60 bunches can be loaded and simultaneously stored in the ring. The molecules are injected at 90 m/s but the velocity of the circul…
In the design of a diffraction-limited storage ring (DLSR) consisting of compact multi-bend achromats (MBAs), it is challenging to simultaneously achieve an ultralow emittance and a satisfactory nonlinear performance, due to extremely large nonlinearities and limited tuning ranges of the element parameters. Nevertheless, taking the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) as an example, we demonstrate that the potential of a DLSR design can be explored with a successive and iterative implementation of the particle swarm optimization (PSO) and multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA). It turns out that…
KEK electron linac was upgraded to 8 GeV for the KEK B-Factory (KEKB) project. During the commissioning of the upgraded linac, even continuing SOR ring injections, we had achieved a primary electron beam with 10-nC (6.24 x 10^10) per bunch up to 3.7-GeV for positron generation. This could be classified as one of the brightest S-band linac's. Since the KEKB rings were completed in December 1998, those 3.5-GeV position and 8-GeV electron beams have been injected with an excellent performance. Moreover, we have succeeded in switching among the high-intensity beams for KEKB and beams for two SOR r…
In the National Spallation Neutron Source (NSNS) design, a 180 meter long transport line connects the 1 GeV linac to an accumulator ring. The linac beam has a current of 28 mA, pulse length of 1 ms, and 60 Hz rep rate. The high energy transport line consists of sixteen 60 degrees FODO cells, and accommodates a 90 degrees achromatic bend, an energy compressor, collimators, part of injection system, and enough diagnostic devices to measure the beam quality before injection. To reduce the uncontrolled beam losses, this line has nine beam halo scrapers and very tight tolerances on both transverse …

Among various DLSR proposals, the hybrid multi-bend achromat concept developed at ESRF predicts an effective way of minimizing the emittance and meanwhile keeping the required sextupole strengths to an achievable level. For the High Energy Photon Source planned to be built in Beijing, an ESRF-type lattice design consisting of 48 hybrid se…
The laser-driven generation of relativistic electron beams in plasma and their acceleration to high energies with GV/m-gradients has been successfully demonstrated. Now, it is time to focus on the application of laser-plasma accelerated (LPA) beams. The "Accelerator Technology HElmholtz iNfrAstructure" (ATHENA) of the Helmholtz Association fosters innovative particle accelerators and high-power laser technology. As part of the ATHENAe pillar several different applications driven by LPAs are to be developed, such as a compact FEL, medical imaging and the first realization of LPA-beam injection …
Dynamic aperture (DA) is an important nonlinear property of a storage ring lattice, which has a dominant effect on beam injection efficiency and beam lifetime. Generally, minimizing both resonance driving terms (RDTs) and amplitude dependent tune shifts is an essential condition for enlarging the DA. In this paper, we study the correlation between the fluctuation of RDTs along the ring and the DA area with double- and multi-bend achromat lattices. It is found that minimizing the RDT fluctuations is more effective than minimizing RDTs themselves in enlarging the DA, and thus can serve as a very…
A simulation package employing a Particle in Cell (PIC) method is developed to study the high current beam transport and the dynamics of plasmas. This package includes subroutines those are suited for various planned projects at University of Frankfurt. In the framework of the storage ring project (F8SR) the code was written to describe the beam optics in toroidal magnetic fields. It is used to design an injection system for a ring with closed magnetic field lines. The generalized numerical model, in Cartesian coordinates is used to describe the intense ion beam transport through the chopper s…
Practical ionization cooling rings could lead to lower cost or improved performance in neutrino factory or muon collider designs. The ring modeled here uses realistic three-dimensional fields. The performance of the ring compares favorably with the linear cooling channel used in the second US Neutrino Factory Study. The normalized 6D emittance of an ideal ring is decreased by a factor of approximately 240, compared with a factor of only 15 for the linear channel. We also examine such \textit{real-world} effects as windows on the absorbers and rf cavities and leaving empty lattice cells for inj…
A new type of charge-exchange injection scheme for high-intensity proton rings that use a laser beam and an undulator magnet is proposed. The elementary stripping process is resonant photoionization via a broad Stark state formed by the Stark effect at an energy level near the peak of the potential barrier. The method used to estimate the parameters of the necessary laser beam and magnetic field is described. As an application to an actual accelerator, a laser stripping system using a high-finesse Fabry-Perot resonator and an undulator is proposed. An estimation of the photon loss due to the p…
We report on measurements of beam backgrounds during the first commissioning phase of the SuperKEKB collider in 2016, performed with the plastic scintillator and silicon photomultiplier-based CLAWS detector system. The sub-nanosecond time resolution and single particle detection capability of the sensors allow bunch-by-bunch measurements, enable CLAWS to perform a novel time resolved analysis of beam backgrounds, and make the system uniquely suited for the study of injection backgrounds. We present measurements of various aspects of regular beam background and injection backgrounds which inclu…
The proton irradiation accelerator is widely founded for industry application, and should be designed as compact, reliable, and easy operate. A 10 MeV proton beam is designed to be injected into the slow circulation ring with the repetition rate of 0.5 Hz for accumulation and acceleration, and then the beam with the energy of 300MeV will be slowly extracted by third order resonance method. For getting a higher intensity and more uniform beam, the height of the injection bump is carefully optimised during the injection period. Besides, in order to make the extracted beam with a more uniform dis…
The two cooling channels based on the RFOFO ring concept are considered and simulated. One of them is the RFOFO helix, also known as the Guggenheim. The helical shape of the channel resolves the injection and extraction issues as well as the absorber overheating issue. The issue of the RF breakdown in the magnetic field is addressed in the so-called open cavity cooling channel lattice with magnetic coils in the irises of the RF cavities. The details of the tracking studies of both channels are presented and compared to the performance of the original RFOFO cooling ring design.
A beam optics scheme has been designed for the Future Circular Collider-e+e- (FCC-ee). The main characteristics of the design are: beam energy 45 to 175 GeV, 100 km circumference with two interaction points (IPs) per ring, horizontal crossing angle of 30 mrad at the IP and the crab-waist scheme [1] with local chromaticity correction. The crab-waist scheme is implemented within the local chromaticity correction system without additional sextupoles, by reducing the strength of one of the two sextupoles for vertical chromatic correction at each side of the IP. So-called "tapering" of the magnets …
