In the National Spallation Neutron Source (NSNS) design, a 180 meter long transport line connects the 1 GeV linac to an accumulator ring. The linac beam has a current of 28 mA, pulse length of 1 ms, and 60 Hz rep rate. The high energy transport line consists of sixteen 60 degrees FODO cells, and accommodates a 90 degrees achromatic bend, an energy compressor, collimators, part of injection system, and enough diagnostic devices to measure the beam quality before injection. To reduce the uncontrolled beam losses, this line has nine beam halo scrapers and very tight tolerances on both transverse and longitudinal beam dynamics under space charge conditions. The design of this line is presented.
This paper presents a list of Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT) facilities for light-ion, high-intensity accelerators. It was put together to facilitate comparisons with the PXIE LEBT design choices. A short discussion regarding the importance of the beam perveance in the choice of the transport scheme follows.
The 750-keV low-energy beam transport of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) linac consists of two independent beam lines that facilitate simultaneous injection of H+ and H- beams into the linear accelerator. The efficiency of beam transport within this structure is largely controlled by the effects of space-charge neutralization. In this paper, we report a series of experiments that were performed to determine the level, as well as the required timescale for the onset of beam space charge neutralization. Measurements performed along the structure indicate significant variation of n…
Effects of beam emittance, energy spread, optical parameters and magnet misalignment on beam polarization through particle transport systems are investigated. Particular emphasis will be placed on the beam lines being used at Fermilab for the development of the muon beam for the Muon g-2 experiment, including comparisons with the natural polarization resulting from pion decay, and comments on the development of systematic correlations among phase space variables.
A typical Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT) design relies on dynamics with nearly complete beam space charge neutralization over the entire length of the LEBT. This paper argues that, for a beam with modest perveance and uniform current density distribution when generated at the source, a downstream portion of the LEBT can be un-neutralized without significant emittance growth.
Diagnostic X (D-X) transport system would extract the beam from the downstream transport line of the second- axis of the Dual Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test facility (DARHT-II) and transport this beam to the D-X firing point via four branches of the beamline in order to provide four lines of sight for x-ray radiography. The design goal is to generate four DARHT-II-like x-ray pulses on each line of sight. In this paper, we discuss several potential beam quality degradation processes in the passive magnet lattice beamline and indicate how they constrain the D-X beamline design parameters, s…
The concept of a storage ring with toroidal magnetic field was presented in the two previous EPAC conferences. Here we report the first results of experiments performed with beam transport in toroidal magnetic fields and details of the injection system. The beam transport experiments were carried out with 30 degree toroidal segments with an axial magnetic field of 0.6T. The multi turn injection system relies on a transverse injection coil together with an electric kicker system.
Polar molecules, in strong-field seeking states, can be transported and focused by an alternating sequence of electric field gradients that focus in one transverse direction while defocusing in the other. We show, by calculation and numerical simulation, how one may greatly improve the alternating gradient transport and focusing of molecules. We use a new optimized multipole lens design, a FODO-lattice beam transport line, and lenses to match the beam transport line to the beam source and to the final focus. We derive analytic expressions for the potentials, fields, and gradients that may be u…
In this study, a low energy beam transport (LEBT) channel for the proton linac section of the Turkish Accelerator Center (TAC) has been designed by using TRAVEL code. Commonly used LEBT including two focusing solenoid magnets will transport and match the H- beam from a volume source to RFQ. In the beam dynamics simulations of such a LEBT line, 95% space-charge compensation (SCC) has been considered in this study. We aimed to find out the determination of our RFQ input parameters that gives the best possible beam quality at the entrance of the RFQ using beam collimator in the LEBT line as an al…
A prototype of ion beam transport module has been developed at the Institut Pluridisciplinaire Hubert Curien (IPHC) and used as a test bed to investigate key issues related to the efficient transport of ion beams. This includes the reduction of the beam losses, the increase of the acceptance, and the definition of the instrumentation necessary to evaluate the performances. An experiment was performed on a full-scale beam line and following a standard beam analysis, steering, and focusing procedure. After a review of the developments carried out for some demanding facilities and for the design …
This chapter gives an introduction to low-energy beam transport systems, and discusses the typically used magnetostatic elements (solenoid, dipoles and quadrupoles) and electrostatic elements (einzel lens, dipoles and quadrupoles). The ion beam emittance, beam space-charge effects and the physics of ion source extraction are introduced. Typical computer codes for analysing and designing ion optical systems are mentioned, and the trajectory tracking method most often used for extraction simulations is described in more detail.
The PIP2IT test accelerator is under construction at Fermilab. Its ion source and Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT) in its initial (straight) configuration have been commissioned to full specification parameters. This paper introduces the LEBT design and summarizes the outcome of the commissioning activities.
This paper describes the mechanical design of the downstream beam transport line for the second axis of the Dual Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT II) Facility. The DARHT-II project is a collaboration between LANL, LBNL and LLNL. DARHT II is a 20-MeV, 2000-Amperes, 2-msec linear induction accelerator designed to generate short bursts of x-rays for the purpose of radiographing dense objects. The down-stream beam transport line is approximately 20-meter long region extending from the end of the accelerator to the bremsstrahlung target. Within this proposed transport line there are 15 co…
Beam quality preservation during transport of high-brightness electron beams is of general concern in the design of modern accelerators. Methods to manage incoherent synchrotron radiation (ISR) have been in place for decades; as beam brightness has improved coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) and the microbunching instability (uBI) have emerged as performance limitations. We apply the compensation analysis of diMitri, Cornacchia, and Spampinati - as previously used by Borland - to the design of transport systems for use with low-emittance beams, and find that appropriately configured second o…
The Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) at Fermilab is a program of upgrades to the injection complex. At its core is the design and construction of a CW-compatible, pulsed H- superconducting RF linac. To validate the concept of the front-end of such machine, a test accelerator (a.k.a. PXIE) is under construction. It includes a 10 mA DC, 30 KeV H- ion source, a 2 m-long Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT), a 2.1 MeV CW RFQ, followed by a Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT) that feeds the first of 2 cryomodules increasing the beam energy to ~25 MeV, and a High Energy Beam Transport section (HEBT) …
A simulation package employing a Particle in Cell (PIC) method is developed to study the high current beam transport and the dynamics of plasmas. This package includes subroutines those are suited for various planned projects at University of Frankfurt. In the framework of the storage ring project (F8SR) the code was written to describe the beam optics in toroidal magnetic fields. It is used to design an injection system for a ring with closed magnetic field lines. The generalized numerical model, in Cartesian coordinates is used to describe the intense ion beam transport through the chopper s…
Classical mechanical treatment of charged particle beam optics is so far very satisfactory from a practical point of view in applications ranging from electron microscopy to accelerator technology. However, it is desirable to understand the underlying quantum mechanics since the classical treatment is only an approximation. Quantum mechanical treatment of spin-1/2 particle beam transport through optical elements with straight optic axes, based on the proper equation, namely, the Dirac equation, has been developed already to some extent. In such a theory the orbital and spin motions are treated…
In this study, a low energy beam transport (LEBT) channel for the proton linac section of the Turkic Accelerator Complex (TAC) has been designed by using TRACE 2D and TRAVEL codes. The LEBT channel is located between an ion source and a radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) structure. The aims of the design studies are perfect matching between input and output beams with two solenoid magnets, small emittance growth and sufficient space for beam diagnostics. Total length of such LEBT channel is about 1.3 m. The current of H- ion beam from ion source is 80 mA. In the beam dynamical simulations, we ha…
Laser Plasma Acceleration (LPA) [1] is an emerging concept enabling to generate electron beams with high energy, high peak current and small transverse emittance within a very short distance. The use of LPA can be applied to the Free Electron Laser (FEL) [2] case in order to investigate whether it is suitable for the light amplification in the undulator. However, capturing and guiding of such beams to the undulator is very challenging, because of the large divergence and high energy spread of the electron beams at the plasma exit, leading to large chromatic emittances. A specific beam manipula…
It has been empirically observed in both experiments and particle-in-cell simulations that space-charge-dominated beams suffer strong growth in statistical phase-space area (degraded quality) and particle losses in alternating gradient quadrupole transport channels when the undepressed phase advance sigma_0 increases beyond about 85 degrees per lattice period. Although this criterion has been used extensively in practical designs of strong focusing intense beam transport lattices, the origin of the limit has not been understood. We propose a mechanism for the transport limit resulting from cla…
Though a straight drift-quadrupole system can not be made an achromat, there exists an example of a bend-free drift-quadrupole system which can transport certain incoming beam ellipses without introducing first-order chromatic distortions. In this paper we show that such a possibility is not a rare special case, but a general property. For every drift-quadrupole system there exists an unique set of Twiss parameters, which will be transported through that system without first order chromatic distortions. Moreover, we prove that at the same time these Twiss parameters minimize the absolute value…
Proton beams generated from laser acceleration show merit for their unique spatial (micron-size) and temporal (picosecond) properties, which make them desirable for many potential applications. However, the large energy spread and divergence angle make it difficult to maintain these beam properties after delivery. This hinders the wide application of laser acceleration. In this paper, we design a double achromatic beam translation system (DABTS), based on weak-focusing magnets, to realize achromatic transmission in both the horizontal and vertical directions, and compress the bunch length of t…
2D and 4D transverse phase-space of a low-energy ion-beam is measured with two of the most common emittance scanners. The article covers the description of the installation, the setup, the settings, the experiment and the benchmark of the two emittance meters. We compare the results from three series of measurements and present the advantages and drawbacks of the two systems. Coupling between phase-space planes, correlations and mitigation of deleterious effects are discussed. The influence of background noise and aberrations of trace-space figures on emittance measurements and RMS calculation…
A series of beam dynamic studies were performed in 2020-2021 at the PIP-II Injector Test Facility (PIP2IT) that has been built to validate the concept of the front-end of the PIP-II linac being constructed at Fermilab. PIP2IT is comprised of a 30-keV H- ion source, a 2 m-long Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT), a 2.1- MeV CW RFQ, followed by a 10-m Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT), 2 cryomodules accelerating the beam to 16 MeV and a High-Energy Beam Transport (HEBT) bringing the beam to a dump. This paper presents beam dynamics - related measurements performed at PIP2IT such as the Twiss para…
We designed an optimized antimuon beamline with the simulation using G4beamline and TRANSPORT software packages for Heavy Ion Accelerator Project in South Korea. This research suggests the optimized muon beamline can transport $2.4\times10^{8}$ antimuons per second to a circle with a radius of 3 cm. In terms of muon rate, this is competitive with world leading muon beam facilities.
Despite the fact that the first-order beam dynamics models allow an approximated evaluation of the beam properties, their contribution is essential during the conceptual design of an accelerator or beamline. However, during the commissioning some of their limitations appear in the comparison against measurements. The extension of the linear model to higher order effects is, therefore, demanded. In this paper, the effects of particle-matter interaction have been included in the model of the transport lines in the proton therapy facility at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) in Switzerland. To imp…
Using a particle-in-cell (PIC) code, we investigated the possibilities for emittance growth through the quadrupole magnets of the system used to transport the high-current electron beam from an induction accelerator to the bremsstrahlung converter target used for flash radiography. We found that even highly mismatched beams exhibited little emittance growth (< 6%), which we attribute to softening of their initial hard edge current distributions. We also used this PIC code to evaluate the accuracy of emittance measurements using a solenoid focal scan following the quadrupole magnets. If the bea…
The intensity of charged particle beams at Fermilab must be kept within pre-determined safety and operational envelopes in part by assuring all beam within a few percent has been transported from any source to destination. Beam intensity monitors with toroidial pickups provide such beam intensity measurements in the transport lines between accelerators at FNAL. During Run II, much effort was made to continually improve the resolution and accuracy of the system.
The UNILAC was improved for high current performance by replacing the Wideroe prestripper accelerator by an RFQ and an IH-type DTL. In addition, one of two ion source terminals was equipped with high current sources of MUCIS- and MEVVA-type. Therefore, a redesign of the LEBT from the ion source to the RFQ entrance was necessary. The new LEBT was installed at the beginning of 1999. The commissioning was carried mainly with a high intense argon beam. The achieved 17 emA Ar+ are 6 emA above the RFQ design intensity. The expected performance of the new LEBT was achieved: full transmission for high…
The kicker control system was used for beam extraction and injection between two cooling storage rings (CSRs) at the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL). To meet the requirements of special physics experiments, the kicker controller was upgraded. The new controller was designed based on ARM+DSP+FPGA technology and monolithic circuit architecture, which can achieve a precision time delay of 2.5 ns. In September 2014, the new kicker control system was installed in the kicker field, and the test experiment using the system was completed. In addition, a pre-trigger signal was provided b…
The Neutralized Drift Compression Experiment-II (NDCX-II) is an induction linac that generates intense pulses of 1.2 MeV helium ions for heating matter to extreme conditions. Here, we present recent results on optimizing beam transport. The NDCX-II beamline includes a 1-meter-long drift section downstream of the last transport solenoid, which is filled with charge-neutralizing plasma that enables rapid longitudinal compression of an intense ion beam against space-charge forces. The transport section on NDCX-II consists of 28 solenoids. Finding optimal field settings for a group of solenoids re…

The KHIMA synchrotron is designed to accelerate and extract the carbon ion (proton) beam with various energy range, 110 up to 430 MeV/u (60 up to 230 MeV). A lattice design and beam optics studies for the High Energy Beam Transport (HEBT) line at the KHIMA accelerator system have been carried out with WinAgile and the MAD-X codes. Because the magnet…
The development of the new RFQ Cooler, called SHIRaC, was carried out. As a part of SPIRAL 2 facility, SHIRaC aims to handle and cool typical SPIRAL 2 beams with large emittances (up to 80 pi.mm.mrad) and high currents (up to 1 uA). Its purposes are to enhance as much as possible the beam quality (transverse geometric emittance of less than 3 pi.mm.mrad and longitudinal energy spread close to 1 eV) and to transmit more than 60 % of ions. Numerical simulations and experimental studies have shown that the required beam quality can be reached only in term of the emittance. The energy spread is ve…
The H8 beam line on the North Area of CERN SPS is a multipurpose experimental secondary particle beam able to transport particles of various types (hadrons, electrons, muons and ions) in a large momentum range from 10 GeV/c up to the top SPS energy (400 or 450 GeV/C). During the 2003-2004 shutdown the beam line was modified in order to accommodate a new tertiary beam line, able to produce and transport particles in the momentum range of 1 to 9 GeV/c. Such low momentum hadron and electron particle beams are requested by the LHC experiments in order to calibrate various sub-detector systems. The…
Typical front-ends of modern light-ion high-intensity accelerators typically consist of an ion source, a Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT), a Radiofrequency Quadrupole (RFQ) and a Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT), which is followed by the main linac accelerating structures. Over the years, many LEBTs have been designed, constructed and operated very successfully. In this paper, we present the guiding principles and compromises that lead to the design choices of the PXIE LEBT, including the rationale for a beam line that allows un-neutralized transport over a significant portion of the LEBT w…
We consider a technique to determine the initial beam conditions of the DARHT II Accelerator by measuring the beam size under three different magnetic transport settings. This may be time gated to resolve the parameters as a function of time within the 2000 nsec pulse. This technique leads to three equations in three unknowns with solution giving the accelerator exit beam radius, tilt and emittance. We find that systematic errors cancel and so are not a problem in unfolding the initial beam conditions. Random uncorrelated shot to shot errors can be managed by one of three strategies: 1) make t…
In future linear colliders the luminosity will depend on maintaining the small emittance aspect ratio delivered by damping rings. Correction of cross-plane coupling can be important in preventing dilution of the beam emittance. In order to minimize the vertical emittance, especially for a flat beam, it is necessary to remove all cross-plane (x-y) correlations. This paper studies emittance measurement and correction for coupled beams in the presence of realistic measurement errors. The results of simulations show that reconstruction of the full 4x4 beam matrix can be misleading in the presence …
Due to increasing environmental and economic constraints, optimization of ion beam transport and equipment design becomes essential. The future should be equipped with planet-friendly facilities, that is, solutions that reduce environmental impact and improve economic competitiveness. The tendency to increase the intensity of the current and the power of the beams obliges us and brings us to new challenges. Installations tend to have larger dimensions with increased areas, volumes, weights and costs. A new ion beam transport prototype was developed and used as a test bed to identify key issues…
Modern ion accelerators and ion implantation systems need very short, highly versatile, Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT) systems. The need for reliable and continuous operation requires LEBT designs to be simple and robust. The energy efficiency of available high temperature superconductors (HTS), with efficient and simple cryocooler refrigeration, is an additional attraction. Innovative, compact LEBT systems based on solenoids designed and built with high-temperature superconductor will be developed using computer models and prototyped. The parameters will be chosen to make this type of LEBT …
The effect of conducting pipes on the equilibrium of intense nonaxisymmetric continuous beams of charged particles is investigated. For a cylindrical pipe and an elliptical beam, we obtain an exact closed form analytical expression for the electrostatic potential. Using a variational principle, we then explore the distortions that equilibrium beams suffer due to the conducting channel. Finally, we present an exact proof that despite the nonlinear forces acting on beams of arbitrary cross section inside conducting pipes of arbitrary shape, the density of these beams remains homogeneous and thei…
Due to the potentially adverse effects of the generation of halo particles in intense proton beams, it is imperative to have a clear understanding of the mechanisms that can lead to halo formation for current and proposed high- intensity linacs. To this end a theoretical model has been developed, which indicates that protons under the combined influence of strong space charge forces and periodic focussing in a linear transport channel can be kicked into halo orbits. However, no experimental measurements of beam halo in proton beams have yet been carried out. In this paper we report the progres…
The ELIMED (MEDical and multidisciplinary application at ELI Beamlines) beam line is being developed at INFN-LNS with the aim of transporting and selecting in energy proton and ion beams accelerated by laser-matter interaction at ELI Beamlines in Prague. It will be a section of the ELIMAIA (ELI Multidisciplinary Applications of laser-Ions Acceleration) beam line, dedicated to applications, including the medical one, of laser-accelerated ion beams [1,2]. A Monte Carlo model has been developed to support the design of the beam line in terms of particle transport efficiency, to optimize the trans…
Within the Thermal Wave Model framework a comparison among Wigner function, Husimi function, and the phase-space distribution given by a particle tracking code is made for a particle beam travelling through a linear lens with small aberrations. The results show that the quantum-like approach seems to be very promising.
To calculate nonlinear transport of space charge dominated beam in 6D phase spaces, a computer code package LEADS-v5 (Linear and Electrostatic Accelerator Dynamics Simulations) has been developed. The codes calculate particle motions in the beam transport systems consisting of electrostatic and magnetic focusing lenses, ion analyzers, multipoles and RF accelerating structures. The nonlinear forces of external electric/magnetic fields are analyzed by the Lie algebraic method, and the space charge forces are obtained by the particle in cell (PIC) scheme. In the codes, Uniform and Gaussian partic…
In this paper we present the design of a straight drift-quadrupole system which can transport certain beam ellipses (apochromatic beam ellipses) without influence of the second and of the third order chromatic and geometric aberrations of the beamline transfer map.
A detailed experimental and simulation study of the extraction of a 24 keV He-ion beam from an ECR ion source and the subsequent beam transport through an analyzing magnet is presented. We find that such a slow ion beam is very sensitive to space-charge forces, but also that the neutralization of the beam's space charge by secondary electrons is virtually complete for beam currents up to at least 0.5 mA. The beam emittance directly behind the extraction system is 65 pi mm mrad and is determined by the fact that the ion beam is extracted in the strong magnetic fringe field of the ion source. Th…
A review of a recent theoretical investigation of the quantum transverse beam motion that has been developed in terms of a coupled system of nonlinear spinorial equations is carried out. This is done assuming that a relativistic electron/positron beam is traveling through a plasma along an external magnetic field in overdense condition. Three different nonliner regimes of this analysis are considered: the strictly local regime, where the beam spot size is much greater than the plasma wavelength (then, the spinorial system is reduced to a 2D cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation in the form of G…
The beam transport system for the Advanced Hydrotest Facility (AHF) anticipates multiple beam splitters [1]. Monitoring two separated beams in a common beam pipe in the splitter sections imposes certain requirements on diagnostics for these sections. In this note we explore a two-beam system in a generic beam monitor and study the feasibility of resolving the positions of the two beams with a single diagnostic device.
It has long been known that the ellipse normally used to model the phase space extension of a beam in linear dynamics may be represented by a complex number which can be interpreted similarly to a complex impedance in electrical circuits, so that classical electrical methods might be used for the design of such beam transport lines. However, this method has never been fully developed, and only the transport transformation of single particular elements, like drift spaces or quadrupoles, has been presented in the past. In this paper, we complete the complex formalism of linear beam dynamics by o…
