We rewrite the recently derived cubic action of Double Field Theory on group manifolds [arXiv:1410.6374] in terms of a generalized metric and extrapolate it to all orders in the fields. For the resulting action, we derive the field equations and state them in terms of a generalized curvature scalar and a generalized Ricci tensor. Compared to the generalized metric formulation of DFT derived from tori, all these quantities receive additional contributions related to the non-trivial background. It is shown that the action is invariant under its generalized diffeomorphisms and 2D-diffeomorphisms. Imposing additional constraints relating the background and fluctuations around it, the precise relation between the proposed generalized metric formulation of DFT${}_\mathrm{WZW}$ and of original DFT from tori is clarified. Furthermore we show how to relate DFT${}_\mathrm{WZW}$ of the WZW background with the flux formulation of original DFT.
We develop the formulation of DFT on pre-QP-manifold. The consistency conditions like section condition and closure constraint are unified by a weak master equation. The Bianchi identities are also characterized by the pre-Bianchi identity. Then, the background metric and connections are formulated by using covariantized pre-QP-manifold. An application to the analysis of the DFT on group manifold is given.
We provide the canonical formulation of double field theory. It is shown that this dynamics is subject to primary and secondary constraints. The Poisson bracket algebra of secondary constraints is shown to close on-shell according to the C-bracket. A systematic way of writing boundary integrals in doubled geometry is given. By including appropriate boundary terms in the double field theory Hamiltonian, expressions for conserved energy and momentum of an asymptotically flat doubled space-time are obtained and applied to a number of solutions.
We give a brief overview of the current status of Double Field Theory on Group Manifolds (DFTWZW). Therefore, we start by reviewing some basic notions known from Double Field Theory (DFT) and show how they extend/generalize into the framework of Double Field Theory on Group Manifolds. In this context, we discuss the relationship between both theories and the transition from DFTWZW to DFT. Furthermore, we address some open questions and present an outlook into our current research.
The generalized metric is a T-duality covariant symmetric matrix constructed from the metric and two-form gauge field and arises in generalized geometry. We view it here as a metric on the doubled spacetime and use it to give a simple formulation with manifest T-duality of the double field theory that describes the massless sector of closed strings. The gauge transformations are written in terms of a generalized Lie derivative whose commutator algebra is defined by a double field theory extension of the Courant bracket.
Based on our previous work on the differential geometry for the closed string double field theory, we construct a Yang-Mills action which is covariant under O(D,D) T-duality rotation and invariant under three-types of gauge transformations: non-Abelian Yang-Mills, diffeomorphism and one-form gauge symmetries. In double field formulation, in a manifestly covariant manner our action couples a single O(D,D) vector potential to the closed string double field theory. In terms of undoubled component fields, it couples a usual Yang-Mills gauge field to an additional one-form field and also to the clo…
We study a possibility of Lagrangian formulation for free higher spin bosonic totally symmetric tensor field on the background manifold characterizing by the arbitrary metric, vector and third rank tensor fields in framework of BRST approach. Assuming existence of massless and flat limits in the Lagrangian and using the most general form of the operators of constraints we show that the algebra generated by these operators will be closed only for constant curvature space with no nontrivial coupling to the third rank tensor and the strength of the vector fields. This result finally proves that t…
We present a formulation of heterotic Double Field Theory (DFT), where the fundamental fields are in $O(D,D)$ representations. The theory is obtained splitting an $O(D,D+K)$ duality invariant DFT. This procedure produces a Green-Schwarz mechanism for the generalized metric, and a fundamental gauge field which transforms as a gauge connection only to leading order. After parametrization, the former induces a non-covariant transformation on the metric tensor, which can be removed considering field redefinitions, and an ordinary Green-Schwarz mechanism on the b-field. Within this framework we exp…
On the supergravity formulation of mirror symmetry in generalized Calabi-Yau manifolds
我们得到了N=2标量势的完整超引力描述,它实现了Calabi-Yau流形(广义几何)上的一般通量紧化。Berglund和Mayr不久前提出的有效势V_{eff} = V_{(\partial_Z V=0)} $, obtained by integrating out the massive axionic fields of the special quaternionic manifold, is manifestly mirror symmetric, i.e. invariant with respect to {\rm Sp}(2 h_2+2)\times {\rm Sp}(2 h_1+2) and their exchange, being h_1, h_2 the complex dimensions of the underlying special geometries. {\Scr V}_{eff} has a manifestly N=1 form in terms of a mirror symmetric superpotential $ W$。
A flux formulation of Double Field Theory on group manifold is derived and applied to study generalized Scherk-Schwarz compactifications, which give rise to a bosonic subsector of half-maximal, electrically gauged supergravities. In contrast to the flux formulation of original DFT, the covariant fluxes split into a fluctuation and a background part. The latter is connected to a $2D$-dimensional, pseudo Riemannian manifold, which is isomorphic to a Lie group embedded into O($D,D$). All fields and parameters of generalized diffeomorphisms are supported on this manifold, whose metric is spanned b…
We extend the recently constructed double field theory formulation of the low-energy theory of the closed bosonic string to the heterotic string. The action can be written in terms of a generalized metric that is a covariant tensor under O(D,D+n), where n denotes the number of gauge vectors, and n additional coordinates are introduced together with a covariant constraint that locally removes these new coordinates. For the abelian subsector, the action takes the same structural form as for the bosonic string, but based on the enlarged generalized metric, thereby featuring a global O(D,D+n) symm…
We consider the concept of a generalised manifold in the O(d,d) setting, i.e., in double geometry. The conjecture by Hohm and Zwiebach for the form of finite generalised diffeomorphisms is shown to hold. Transition functions on overlaps are defined. Triple overlaps are trivial concerning their action on coordinates, but non-trivial on fields, including the generalised metric. A generalised manifold is an ordinary manifold, but the generalised metric on the manifold carries a gerbe structure. We show how the abelian behaviour of the gerbe is embedded in the non-abelian T-duality group. We also …
We investigate the Lagrangian formulation of the double-copy correspondence between gauge theories and gravity, up to the cubic order. Building on the definition of the double-copy field as a convolution of two vectors, we obtain free gravitational Lagrangians as products of two Yang-Mills Lagrangians, in a form amenable to be easily extended to the massive case. We discuss the origin of these results from tensionless strings and show the existence of gauge fixings that mix the two spin-one sectors and lead to an alternative, especially simple, version of the free Lagrangian. We then construct…
A new version of double field theory (DFT) is derived for the exactly solvable background of an in general left-right asymmetric WZW model in the large level limit. This generalizes the original DFT that was derived via expanding closed string field theory on a torus up to cubic order. The action and gauge transformations are derived for fluctuations around the generalized group manifold background up to cubic order, revealing the appearance of a generalized Lie derivative and a corresponding C-bracket upon invoking a new version of the strong constraint. In all these quantities a background d…
Double sigma model with the strong constraints is equivalent to the normal sigma model by imposing the self-duality relation. The gauge symmetries are the diffeomorphism and one-form gauge transformation with the strong constraints. We modify the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions with the fully $O(D, D)$ description from the doubled gauge fields. We perform the one-loop $β$ function for the constant background fields to find low energy effective theory without using the strong constraints. The low energy theory can also be $O(D,D)$ invariant as the double sigma model. We use the other …
In a previous paper, we have shown that the geometry of double field theory has a natural interpretation on flat para-Kähler manifolds. In this paper, we show that the same geometric constructions can be made on any para-Hermitian manifold. The field is interpreted as a compatible (pseudo-)Riemannian metric. The tangent bundle of the manifold has a natural, metric-compatible bracket that extends the C-bracket of double field theory. In the para-Kähler case this bracket is equal to the sum of the Courant brackets of the two Lagrangian foliations of the manifold. Then, we define a canonical conn…
The present notes are based on three lectures, each ninety minutes long, prepared for the school 'Integrability, Dualities and Deformations', that ran from 23 to 27 August 2021 in Santiago de Compostela and virtually. These lectures, aimed at graduate students, require only a basic knowledge of string theory. The main goal is to introduce $α'$-corrections to the gravitational sector of different formulations of closed string theory and to reformulate them using novel techniques based on double field theory.
Originally proposed as an $O(d,d)$-invariant formulation of classical closed string theory, double field theory (DFT) offers a rich source of mathematical structures. Most prominently, its gauge algebra is determined by the so-called C-bracket, a generalization of the Courant bracket of generalized geometry, in the sense that it reduces to the latter by restricting the theory to solutions of a "strong constraint". Recently, infinitesimal deformations of these structures in the string sigma model coupling $α'$ were found. In this short contribution, we review constructing the Drinfel'd double o…
We present a flux formulation of Double Field Theory, in which geometric and non-geometric fluxes are dynamical and field-dependent. Gauge consistency imposes a set of quadratic constraints on the dynamical fluxes, which can be solved by truly double configurations. The constraints are related to generalized Bianchi Identities for (non-)geometric fluxes in the double space, sourced by (exotic) branes. Following previous constructions, we then obtain generalized connections, torsion and curvatures compatible with the consistency conditions. The strong constraint-violating terms needed to make c…
This thesis deals with new backgrounds and concepts in Double Field Theory (DFT), a T-Duality invariant reformulation of supergravity (SUGRA). We begin by reviewing the basic concepts and notions of DFT. Afterwards, we turn to Double Field Theory on group manifolds (DFT$_{\mathrm{WZW}}$). In order to obtain its action and gauge transformations, Closed String Field Theory (CSFT) computations are performed on a worldsheet, governed by a Wess-Zumino-Witten model on a group manifold. We consider generalized diffeomorphisms and their gauge algebra, which closes under a modified strong constraint. T…
We describe the doubled space of Double Field Theory as a group manifold $G$ with an arbitrary generalized metric. Local information from the latter is not relevant to our discussion and so $G$ only captures the topology of the doubled space. Strong Constraint solutions are maximal isotropic submanifold $M$ in $G$. We construct them and their Generalized Geometry in Double Field Theory on Group Manifolds. In general, $G$ admits different physical subspace $M$ which are Poisson-Lie T-dual to each other. By studying two examples, we reproduce the topology changes induced by T-duality with non-tr…
We present the superspace formulation of the local RG equation, a framework for the study of supersymmetric RG flows in which the constraints of holomorphy and R-symmetry are manifest. We derive the consistency conditions associated with super-Weyl symmetry off-criticality and initiate the study of their implications. As examples, we derive an expression for the a-function, and present an analog of the a-maximization equation, which is valid off-criticality. We also apply this machinery to the study of conformal manifolds and give a simple proof that the metric on such manifolds is Kahler.
We provide an extension of the recently constructed double field theory formulation of the low-energy limits of type II strings, in which the RR fields can depend simultaneously on the 10-dimensional space-time coordinates and linearly on the dual winding coordinates. For the special case that only the RR one-form of type IIA carries such a dependence, we obtain the massive deformation of type IIA supergravity due to Romans. For T-dual configurations we obtain a `massive' but non-covariant formulation of type IIB, in which the 10-dimensional diffeomorphism symmetry is deformed by the mass para…
The classical double copy relating exact solutions of biadjoint scalar, gauge and gravity theories continues to receive widespread attention. Recently, a derivation of the exact classical double copy was presented, using ideas from twistor theory, in which spacetime fields are mapped to Cech cohomology classes in twistor space. A puzzle remains, however, in how to interpret the twistor double copy, in that it relies on somehow picking special representatives of each cohomology class. In this paper, we provide two alternative formulations of the twistor double copy using the more widely-used la…
A characteristic value formulation of the Weyl double copy leads to an asymptotic formulation. We find that the Weyl double copy holds asymptotically in cases where the full solution is algebraically general, using rotating STU supergravity black holes as an example. The asymptotic formulation provides clues regarding the relation between asymptotic symmetries that follows from the double copy. Using the C-metric as an example, we show that a previous interpretation of this gravity solution as a superrotation has a single copy analogue relating the appropriate Liénard-Wiechert potential to a l…
We give a systematic derivation of the local expressions of the NS H-flux, geometric F- as well as non-geometric Q- and R-fluxes in terms of bivector beta- and two-form B-potentials including vielbeins. They are obtained using a supergeometric method on QP-manifolds by twist of the standard Courant algebroid on the generalized tangent space without flux. Bianchi identities of the fluxes are easily deduced. We extend the discussion to the case of the double space and present a formulation of T-duality in terms of canonical transformations between graded symplectic manifolds. Finally, the constr…
Deformation quantization conventionally is described in terms of multidifferential operators. Jet manifold technique is well-known provide the adequate formulation of theory of differential operators. We extended this formulation to the multidifferential ones, and consider their infinite order jet prolongation. The infinite order jet manifold is endowed with the canonical flat connection that provides the covariant formula of a deformation star-product.
Motivated by the results of Anastasiou et al., we consider the convolutional double copy for BRST and anti-BRST covariant formulations of gravitational and gauge theories in more detail. We give a general BRST and anti-BRST invariant formulation of linearised $\mathcal{N}=0$ supergravity using superspace methods and show how this may be obtained from the square of linearised Yang-Mills theories. We demonstrate this relation for the Schwarzschild black hole and the ten-dimensional black string solution as two concrete examples.
Double field theory was developed by theoretical physicists as a way to encompass $T$-duality. In this paper, we express the basic notions of the theory in differential-geometric invariant terms, in the framework of para-Kaehler manifolds. We define metric algebroids, which are vector bundles with a bracket of cross sections that has the same metric compatibility property as a Courant bracket. We show that a double field gives rise to two canonical connections, whose scalar curvatures can be integrated to obtain actions. Finally, in analogy with Dirac structures, we define and study para-Dirac…
The search for a geometrical understanding of dualities in string theory, in particular T-duality, has led to the development of modern T-duality covariant frameworks such as Double Field Theory, whose mathematical structure can be understood in terms of generalized geometry and, more recently, para-Hermitian geometry. In this work we apply techniques associated to this doubled geometry to four-dimensional manifolds, and we show that they are particularly well-suited to the analysis of integrability in special spacetimes, especially in connection with Penrose's twistor theory and its applicati…
Non-Riemannian gravitational theories suggest alternative avenues to understand properties of quantum gravity and provide a concrete setting to study condensed matter systems with non-relativistic symmetry. Derivation of an action principle for these theories generally proved challenging for various reasons. In this technical note, we employ the formulation of double field theory to construct actions for a variety of such theories. This formulation helps removing ambiguities in the corresponding equations of motion. In particular, we embed Torsional Newton-Cartan gravity, Carrollian gravity an…
We provide a short review of Courant algebroids and graded symplectic manifolds and show how different Courant algebroids emerge from double field theory. Fluxes of double field theory and their Bianchi identities are formulated by using pre-QP-manifolds. We stress the relation of the Poisson Courant algebroid with R-flux as a solution of the double field theory section condition.
We continue to study doubled aspects of algebroid structures equipped with the C-bracket in double field theory (DFT). We find that a family of algebroids, the Vaisman (metric or pre-DFT), the pre- and the ante-Courant algebroids are constructed by the analogue of the Drinfel'd double of Lie algebroid pairs. We examine geometric implementations of these algebroids in the para-Hermitian manifold, which is a realization of the doubled space-time in DFT. We show that the strong constraint in DFT is necessary to realize the doubled and non-trivial Poisson structures but can be relaxed for some alg…
We give a formulation of Double Field Theory (DFT) based on a metric algebroid. We derive a covariant completion of the Bianchi identities, i.e. the pre-Bianchi identity in torsion and an improved generalized curvature, and the pre-Bianchi identity including the dilaton contribution. The derived bracket formulation by the Dirac generating operator is applied to the metric algebroid. We propose a generalized Lichnerowicz formula and show that it is equivalent to the pre-Bianchi identities. The dilaton in this setting is included as an ambiguity in the divergence. The projected generalized Lichn…
We continue our exploration of local Double Field Theory (DFT) in terms of symplectic graded manifolds carrying compatible derivations and study the case of heterotic DFT. We start by developing in detail the differential graded manifold that captures heterotic Generalized Geometry which leads to new observations on the generalized metric and its twists. We then give a symplectic pre-NQ-manifold that captures the symmetries and the geometry of local heterotic DFT. We derive a weakened form of the section condition, which arises algebraically from consistency of the symmetry Lie 2-algebra and i…
We give a covariant realization of the doubled sigma-model formulation of duality-symmetric string theory within the general framework of para-Hermitian geometry. We define a notion of generalized metric on a para-Hermitian manifold and discuss its relation to Born geometry. We show that a Born geometry uniquely defines a worldsheet sigma-model with a para-Hermitian target space, and we describe its Lie algebroid gauging as a means of recovering the conventional sigma-model description of a physical string background as the leaf space of a foliated para-Hermitian manifold. Applying the Kotov-S…
The generalized double semion (GDS) model, introduced by Freedman and Hastings, is a lattice system similar to the toric code, with a gapped Hamiltonian whose definition depends on a triangulation of the ambient manifold $M$, but whose space of ground states does not depend on the triangulation, but only on the underlying manifold. In this paper, we use topological quantum field theory (TQFT) to investigate the low-energy limit of the GDS model. We define and study a functorial TQFT $Z_{\mathrm{GDS}}$ in every dimension $n$ such that for every closed $(n - 1)$-manifold $M$, $Z_{\mathrm{GDS}}(M…
