In this review we summarise recent results for the complex eigenvalues and singular values of finite products of finite size random matrices, their correlation functions and asymptotic limits. The matrices in the product are taken from ensembles of independent real, complex, or quaternionic Ginibre matrices, or truncated unitary matrices. Additional mixing within one ensemble between matrices and their inverses is also covered. Exact determinantal and Pfaffian expressions are given in terms of the respective kernels of orthogonal polynomials or functions. Here we list all known cases and some straightforward generalisations. The asymptotic results for large matrix size include new microscopic universality classes at the origin and a generalisation of weak non-unitarity close to the unit circle. So far in all other parts of the spectrum the known standard universality classes have been identified. In the limit of infinite products the Lyapunov and stability exponents share the same normal distribution. To leading order they both follow a permanental point processes. Our focus is on presenting recent developments in this rapidly evolving area of research.
A Toeplitz matrix is one in which the matrix elements are constant along diagonals. The Fisher-Hartwig matrices are much-studied singular matrices in the Toeplitz family. The matrices are defined for all orders, $N$. They are parametrized by two constants, $α$ and $β$. Their spectrum of eigenvalues has a simple asymptotic form in the limit as $N$ goes to infinity. Here we study the structure of their eigenvalues and eigenvectors in this limiting case. We specialize to the case $0<α<|β|<1$, where the behavior is particularly simple.
The Szego-Widom theorem provides an expression for the determinant of block Toeplitz matrices in the asymptotic limit of large matrix dimension n. We show that the presence of zero modes, i.e, eigenvalues that vanish as α^n, |α|<1, when n \to \infty, require a modification of the Szego-Widom theorem. A new asymptotic expression for the determinant of a certain class of block Toeplitz matrices with one pair of zero modes is derived. The result is inspired by 1-dimensional topological superconductors, and the relation with the latter systems is discussed.
We derive exact results for gap probabilities, as well as densities of extreme eigenvalues for six complex random matrix ensembles of fundamental importance. These are Gauss-Wigner, Laguerre-Wishart, Cauchy-Lorentz (two variants), Jacobi-MANOVA and Bures-Hall (trace unrestricted). We deal with both correlated and uncorrelated cases. Extensive Monte-Carlo simulations based on explicit matrix models or Dyson's log-gas formalism have also been performed, which corroborate all analytical results.
We consider the spherical integral of real symmetric or Hermitian matrices when the rank of one matrix is one. We prove the existence of the full asymptotic expansions of these spherical integrals and derive the first and the second term in the asymptotic expansion. Using asymptotic expression of the spherical integral, we derive the asymptotic freeness of Wigner matrices with (deterministic) Hermitian matrices.
We outline an approach recently used to prove formulae for the multiplicative constants in the asymptotics for the sine-kernel and Airy-kernel determinants appearing in random matrix theory and related areas.
We study the distribution of the smallest eigenvalue for certain classes of positive-definite Hermitian random matrices, in the limit where the size of the matrices becomes large. Their limit distributions can be expressed as Fredholm determinants of integral operators associated to kernels built out of Meijer $G$-functions or Wright's generalized Bessel functions. They generalize in a natural way the hard edge Bessel kernel Fredholm determinant. We express the logarithmic derivatives of the Fredholm determinants identically in terms of a $2\times 2$ Riemann-Hilbert problem, and use this repre…
We consider an ensemble of nxn real symmetric random matrices A whose entries are determined by independent identically distributed random variables that have symmetric probability distribution. Assuming that the moment 12+2delta of these random variables exists, we prove that the probability distribution of the spectral norm of A rescaled to n^{-2/3} is bounded by a universal expression. The proof is based on the completed and modified version of the approach proposed and developed by Ya. Sinai and A. Soshnikov to study high moments of Wigner random matrices.
In random matrix theory, Marchenko-Pastur law states that random matrices with independent and identically distributed entries have a universal asymptotic eigenvalue distribution under large dimension limit, regardless of the choice of entry distribution. This law provides useful insight for physics research, because the large $N$ limit proved to be a very useful tool in various theoretical models. We present an alternative proof of Marchenko- Pastur law using Feynman diagrams, which is more familiar to the physics community. We also show that our direct diagrammatic approach can readily gener…
There is a vast theory of the asymptotic behavior of orthogonal polynomials with respect to a measure on $\mathbb{R}$ and its applications to Jacobi matrices. That theory has an obvious affine invariance and a very special role for $\infty$. We extend aspects of this theory in the setting of rational functions with poles on $\overline{\mathbb{R}} = \mathbb{R} \cup \{\infty\}$, obtaining a formulation which allows multiple poles and proving an invariance with respect to $\overline{\mathbb{R}}$-preserving Möbius transformations. We obtain a characterization of Stahl--Totik regularity of a GMP ma…
Transfer matrices and matrix product operators play an ubiquitous role in the field of many body physics. This paper gives an ideosyncratic overview of applications, exact results and computational aspects of diagonalizing transfer matrices and matrix product operators. The results in this paper are a mixture of classic results, presented from the point of view of tensor networks, and of new results. Topics discussed are exact solutions of transfer matrices in equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical physics, tensor network states, matrix product operator algebras, and numerical matrix prod…

We consider the random normal matrices with quadratic external potentials where the associated orthogonal polynomials are Hermite polynomials and the limiting support (called droplet) of the eigenvalues is an ellipse. We calculate the density of the eigenvalues near the boundary of the droplet up to the second subleading corrections and express the subleading corrections in terms of the curvature of the droplet boundary. From this result we additionally get the expected number of eigenvalues outside the droplet. We also obtain the asymptotics of the kernel and found that, in the bulk, the corr…
We use supersymmetry to calculate exact spectral densities for a class of complex random matrix models having the form $M=S+LXR$, where $X$ is a random noise part $X$ and $S,L,R$ are fixed structure parts. This is a certain version of the "external field" random matrix models. We found two-fold integral formulas for arbitrary structural matrices. We investigate some special cases in detail and carry out numerical simulations. The presence or absence of a normality condition on $S$ leads to a qualitatively different behavior of the eigenvalue densities.
The Littlewood--Richardson process is a discrete random point process arising from the isotypic decomposition of tensor products of irreducible representations of $\operatorname{GL}_N(\mathbb{C})$. Biane--Perelomov--Popov matrices are quantum random matrices obtained as the geometric quantization of random Hermitian matrices with deterministic eigenvalues and uniformly random eigenvectors. As first observed by Biane, correlation functions of certain global observables of the LR process coincide with correlation functions of linear statistics of sums of classically independent BPP matrices, the…
