The ability to control the magnetization switching in nanoscale devices is a crucial step for the development of fast and reliable techniques to store and process information. Here we show that the switching dynamics can be controlled efficiently using a microwave field with slowly varying frequency (autoresonance). This technique allowed us to reduce the applied field by more than $30%$ compared to competing approaches, with no need to fine-tune the field parameters. For a linear chain of nanoparticles the effect is even more dramatic, as the dipolar interactions tend to cancel out the effect of the temperature. Simultaneous switching of all the magnetic moments can thus be efficiently triggered on a nanosecond timescale.
The autoresonant approach to excitation and control of large amplitude uniformly precessing magnetization structures in finite length easy axis ferromagnetic nanoparticles is suggested and analyzed within the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert model. These structures are excited by using a spatially uniform, oscillating, chirped frequency magnetic field, while the localization is imposed via boundary conditions. The excitation requires the amplitude of the driving oscillations to exceed a threshold. The dissipation effect on the threshold is also discussed. The autoresonant driving effectively compensate…
We demonstrate switching behavior and quantized conductance at room temperature in percolating films of nanoparticles. Our experiments and complementary simulations show that switching and quantization result from formation of atomic scale wires in gaps between particles. These effects occur only when tunnel gaps are present in the film, close to the percolation threshold.
We report evidence of the magnetization reversal in nanoparticles by surface acoustic waves (SAWs). The experimental system consists of isolated magnetite nanoparticles dispersed on a piezoelectric substrate. Magnetic relaxation from a saturated state becomes significantly enhanced in the presence of the SAW at a constant temperature of the substrate. The dependence of the relaxation on SAW power and frequency has been investigated. The effect is explained by the effective ac magnetic field generated by the SAW in the nanoparticles.
Manipulation of magnetization with ultrashort laser pulses is promising for information storage device applications. The dynamic of the magnetization response depends on the energy transfer from the photons to the spins during the initial laser excitation. A material of special interest for magnetic storage is FePt nanoparticles , on which optical writing with optical angular momentum was demonstrated recently by Lambert et al., although the mechanism remained unclear. Here we investigate experimentally and theoretically the all-optical switching of FePt nanoparticles. We show that the magneti…
The utility of nanoscaled ferromagnetic particles requires both stabilized moments and maximized switching speeds. During reversal, the spatial modulation of the nanoparticle magnetization evolves in time, and the energy differences between each new configuration are accomodated by the absorption or emission spin waves with different wavelengths and energy profiles. The switching speed is limited by how quickly this spin wave energy is dissipated. We present here the first observation of dispersing spin waves in a nanoscaled system, using neutron scattering to detect spin waves in the CoO shel…
We study electron tunneling through Co nanoparticles in the presence of repeated microwave pulses at 4.2K. While individual pulses are too weak to affect the magnetic switching field, repeated microwave pulses start to reduce the magnetic switching field at 10μs spacing. We use I-V curve as a thermometer to show that the microwave pulses do not heat the sample, showing that magnetization in Co nanoparticles is directly excited by microwave pulses, and the relaxation time of the excitation energy is in the range of microsecond.
In a proposed book chapter surface plasmon polariton assisted optical switching in noble metal nanoparticle systems is discussed in the sub-band gap formalism.
We represent the results of micromagnetic modeling and experimental magnetic force microscopy investigations of domain wall (DW) pinning-depinning effects in the hybrid systems consisting of ferromagnetic nanowire (NW) and two ferromagnetic nanoparticles (NPs). It was demonstrated that the special NW-NPs configuration including the NW with DW nucleating bulb at one end and two-NP gate enables the realization of controlled DW pinning-depinning based on switching of magnetization in NPs subsystem. The algorithm of external driving field manipulation and independent NPs switching, which allow one…
An improved micro-SQUID technique is presented allowing us to measure the temperature dependence of the magnetisation switching fields of single nanoparticles well above the critical superconducting temperature of the SQUID. Our first measurements on 3 nm cobalt nanoparticle embedded in a niobium matrix are compared to the Neel Brown model describing the magnetisation reversal by thermal activation over a single anisotropy barrier.

Self-assembled functionalized nano particles are at the focus of a number of potential applications, in particular for molecular scale electronics devices. Here we perform experiments of self-assembly of 10 nm Au nano particles (NPs), functionalized by a dense layer of azobenzene-bithiophene (AzBT) molecules, with the aim of building a light-switchable device with memristive properties. We fabricate planar nanodevices consisting of NP self-assembled network (NPSANs) contacted by nanoelectrodes separated by interelectrode gaps ranging from 30 to 100 nm. We demonstrate the light-induced reversib…
We report a detailed study of neuromorphic switching behaviour in inherently complex percolating networks of self-assembled metal nanoparticles. We show that variation of the strength and duration of the electric field applied to this network of synapse-like atomic switches allows us to control the switching dynamics. Switching is observed for voltages above a well-defined threshold, with higher voltages leading to increased switching rates. We demonstrate two behavioral archetypes and show how the switching dynamics change as a function of duration and amplitude of the voltage stimulus. We sh…
Measurements of magnetic hysteresis loops in single Co nanoparticles at dilution refrigerator temperatures are presented. The nanoparticles are in electric contact with bulk Al leads via tunnel junctions. The tunnel current versus magnetic field displays a magnetic hysteresis loop. The magnetic switching field is reduced by current, and the magnetization of the nanoparticle can be switched by applying a voltage pulse, demonstrating that the magnetic stability of the nanoparticle is diminished by electron transport. Additional transitions and random switches of magnetization can be driven by la…
In this communication we study the transport properties of two-dimensional assemblies of [Fe(Htrz)2(trz)](BF4) spin-crossover nanoparticles (NPs) with two different morphologies. The NPs have been synthesized made in a similar manner than in our previous study in which single NPs were measured. We prepared free-standing self-assembled monolayer sheets of both SCO NPs formed at the air/liquid interface on holey carbon TEM grids to extract their global arrangement and NP size distributions by STEM-HAADF technique. The SCO NP systems present a rod-like shape and possess two different volumes, cor…
Laser-induced manipulation of magnetism at the nanoscale is a rapidly growing research topic with potential for applications in spintronics. In this work, we address the role of the scattering cross section, thermal effects, and laser fluence on the magnetic, structural, and chemical stability of individual magnetic nanoparticles excited by single femtosecond laser pulses. We find that the energy transfer from the fs laser pulse to the nanoparticles is limited by the Rayleigh scattering cross section, which in combination with the light absorption of the supporting substrate and protective lay…
The combination of high sensitive superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) with high quality nanoparticles allowed to check the simplest classical model describing the magnetisation reversal by uniform rotation which were proposed more than 50 years ago by Neel, Stoner and Wohlfarth. The micrometer sized SQUIDs were elaborated by electron beam lithography and the nanoparticles were synthesised by arc-discharge. The measured angular dependence of switching fields of nearly all f.c.c. Co nanoparticles revealed a dominating uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. This result suggests that twin b…
We develop an analytical model for describing the magnetization dynamics in ferromagnetic metal nanoparticles, which is based on the coupled system of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) and Maxwell equations. By solving Maxwell's equations in the quasi-static approximation and finding the magnetic field of eddy currents, we derive the closed LLG equation for the magnetization that fully accounts for the effects of conductivity. We analyze the difference between the LLG equations in metallic and dielectric nanoparticles and show that these effects can strongly influence the magnetization dynamic…
We report the precise control of tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) in devices of self-assembled core/shell Fe$_3$O$_4$/Co$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$Fe$_2$O$_4$ nanoparticles ($0\leq x\leq 1$). Adjusting the magnetic anisotropy through the content of Co$^{2+}$ in the shell, provides an accurate tool to control the switching field between the bistable states of the TMR. In this way, different combinations of soft/hard and hard/soft core/shell configurations can be envisaged for optimizing devices with the required magnetotransport response.
Antiferromagnetic materials hold promising prospects in novel types of spintronics applications. Assessing the stability of antiferromagnetic nanostructures against thermal excitations is a crucial aspect of designing devices with a high information density. Here we use theoretical calculations and numerical simulations to determine the mean switching time of antiferromagnetic nanoparticles in the superparamagnetic limit. It is demonstrated that the thermal stability is drastically reduced compared to ferromagnetic particles in the limit of low Gilbert damping, attributed to the exchange enhan…
We propose a simple model of a nanoswitch as a memory resistor. The resistance of the nanoswitch is determined by electron tunneling through a nanoparticle diffusing around one or more potential minima located between the electrodes in the presence of Joule's heat dissipation. In the case of a single potential minimum, we observe hysteresis of the resistance at finite applied currents and a negative differential resistance. For two (or more) minima the switching mechanism is non-volatile, meaning that the memristor can switch to a resistive state of choice and stay there. Moreover, the noise s…
We analytically determine the optimal microwave field that allows for the magnetization reversal of a nanomagnet modeled as a macrospin. This is done by minimizing the total injected energy. The results are in good agreement with the fields obtained numerically using the optimal control theory. For typical values of the damping parameter, a weak microwave field is sufficient to induce switching through a resonant process. The optimal field is orthogonal to the magnetization direction at any time and modulated both in amplitude and frequency. The dependence of the pulse shape on the applied fie…
Recent progress in experiment on quantum tunnelling of the magnetic moment in mesoscopic systems will be reviewed. The emphasis will be made on measurements of individual nanoparticles. These nanomagnets allow one to test the border between classical and quantum behaviour. Using the micro-SQUID magnetometer, waiting time, switching field and telegraph noise measurements show unambiguously that the magnetisation reversal of small enough single crystalline nanoparticles is described by a model of thermal activation over a single-energy barrier. Results on insulating BaFeO nanoparticles show stro…
Using a new microSQUID set-up, we investigate magnetic anisotropy in a single 1000-atoms cobalt cluster. This system opens new fields in the characterization and the understanding of the origin of magnetic anisotropy in such nanoparticles. For this purpose, we report three-dimensional switching field measurements performed on a 3 nm cobalt cluster embedded in a niobium matrix. We are able to separate the different magnetic anisotropy contributions and evidence the dominating role of the cluster surface.
A structure based on a dimer of silicon nanoparticles, presenting directional scattering in the visible range, was studied as a new design of an all-optical switch. The combination of spherical nanoparticles satisfying, at the same incident wavelength, the zero-backward and the minimum-forward scattering conditions, can produce either a maximum or a minimum of the scattered field in the area between the nanoparticles. The modulation of the incident wavelength can be used as switching parameter, due to the sensitivity of these conditions to it. An optimization of the dimer setup, both in the di…
We report that the irreversible magnetization switching process in ferromagnetic nanoparticles is governed by the formation and dynamics of topological point-defects in the form of hedgehog-antihedgehog pairs. After nucleation, these pairs rapidly separate with speeds exceeding domain wall velocities, and they generate an emergent electric field of solenoidal character and substantial magnitude.
Transport properties of a single plasmon interacting with a hybrid system composed of a semiconductor quantum dot (SQD) and a metal nanoparticle (MNP) coupled to one-dimensional surface plasmonic waveguide are investigated theoretically via the real-space approach. We considered that the MNP-SQD interaction leads to the formation of a hybrid exciton and the transmission and reflection of a single incident plasmon could be controlled by adjusting the frequency of the classical control field applied to the MNP-SQD hybrid nanosystem, the kinds of metallic nanoparticles and the background media, r…
Analytical solution has been found for the second-order effective anisotropy of magnetic nanoparticles of a cubic shape due to the surface anisotropy (SA) of the Néel type. Similarly to the spherical particles, for the simple cubic lattice the grand-diagonal directions $\left(\pm1,\pm1,\pm1\right)$ are favored by the effective cubic anisotropy but the effect is twice as strong. Uniaxial core anisotropy and applied magnetic field cause screening of perturbations from the surface at the distance of the domain-wall width and reduce the effect of SA near the energy minima. However, screening disap…
The effect of noise on the process of high-speed remagnetization of vortex state of a pentagonal array of five circular magnetic nanoparticles is studied by means of computer simulation of Landau-Lifshits model. The mean switching time and its standard deviation of the reversal between the counterclockwise and clockwise vorticities have been computed. It has been demonstrated that with the reversal by the pulse with sinusoidal shape, the optimal pulse duration exists, which minimizes both the mean switching time (MST) and the standard deviation (SD). Besides, both MST and SD significantly depe…
In the absence of dissipation a non-rotating magnetic nanoparticle can be stably levitated in a static magnetic field as a consequence of the spin origin of its magnetization. Here we study the effects of dissipation on the stability of the system, considering the interaction with the background gas and the intrinsic Gilbert damping of magnetization dynamics. At large applied magnetic fields we identify magnetization switching induced by Gilbert damping as the key limiting factor for stable levitation. At low applied magnetic fields and for small particle dimensions magnetization switching is …
Photoresponse of Au nanoparticle functionalized semiconducting GaN (Au-GaN) nanowires is reported for an optical switching using 532 excitation. Wide band gap GaN nanowires are grown by catalyst assisted chemical vapour deposition technique and functionalized with Au in the chemical route. Au-GaN nanowires show surface plasmon resonance (SPR) mode of Au nanoclusters around 550 nm along with characteristic band for GaN around 365 nm. An optical switching is observed for Au-GaN nanowires with a sub-band gap excitation of 532 nm suggesting possible role of surface plasmon polariton assisted trans…
Thermally-activated magnetization dynamics of small nanoparticles subject to microwave (AC) external fields is studied. It is shown that, under sufficiently strong microwave excitations, chaotic magnetization dynamics may occur close to saddle-type heteroclinic connections, and this heteroclinic chaos is responsible for the erosion of the safe basin around stable magnetization states. The erosion phenomenon is then connected to the escape problem from the energy well surrounding a stable equilibrium. It is shown that escape times follow a generalized Arrhenius' law governed by temperature, mic…
The unique physical and optical properties of nanoparticles make their reliable and rapid assembly an important goal for nanotechnology. To this end, many competing driving forces have been targeted to control the self-assembly, though issues with reliability and efficiency indicate that interfaces on the nanoscale are not yet fully understood. In this letter we report for the first time that the flow of water media from the interface between chemically nanopatterned hydrophobic surfaces and adjacent hydrophilic regions (a Janus interface) can effectively be employed for rapid nanoparticle ass…
We investigate the influence of shape anisotropy on the magnetization reversal of a single-domain magnetic nanoparticle driven by a circularly polarized linear down-chirp microwave field pulse (DCMP). Based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, numerical results show that the three controlling parameters of DCMP, namely, microwave amplitude, initial frequency and chirp rate, decrease with the increase of shape anisotropy. For certain shape anisotropy, the reversal time significantly reduces. These findings are related to the competition of shape anisotropy and uniaxial magnetocrystalline an…
Magnetic nanoparticles constitute potential nanomedicine tools based on the possibility to obtain different responses triggered by safe remote stimulus. However, such richness can be detrimental if the different performances are not accurately differentiated (and controlled). An example of this is the reorientation of magnetic nanoparticles under the influence of AC fields, which can be exploited for either magneto-mechanical actuation (MMA) at low frequencies (tens of Hz); or heat release at large ones (MHz range). While it is clear that Brownian rotation is responsible for MMA, its heating r…
By using the real-space method, switching of a single plasmon interacting with a hybrid nanosystem composed of a semiconductor quantum dot (SQD) and a metallic nanoparticle (MNP) coupled to one-dimensional surface plasmonic waveguide is investigated theoretically. We discussed that the dipole coupling between an exciton and a localized surface plasmon results in the formation of a hybrid exciton and the transmission and reflection of the propagating single plasmon could be controlled by changing the interparticle distance between the SQD and the MNP and the size of the nanoparticles. The contr…
Nanomagnetism has recently attracted explosive attention, in particular, because of the enormous potential applications in information industry, e.g. new harddisk technology, race-track memory[1], and logic devices[2]. Recent technological advances[3] allow for the fabrication of single-domain magnetic nanoparticles (Stoner particles), whose magnetization dynamics have been extensively studied, both experimentally and theoretically, involving magnetic fields[4-9] and/or by spin-polarized currents[10-20]. From an industrial point of view, important issues include lowering the critical switching…
We fabricated YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO) direct current (dc) nano superconducting quantum interference devices (nanoSQUIDs) based on grain boundary Josephson junctions by focused ion beam patterning. Characterization of electric transport and noise properties at 4.2$\,$K in magnetically shielded environment yields a very small inductance $L$ of a few pH for an optimized device geometry. This in turn results in very low values of flux noise $<50\,{\rm n}Φ_0/{\rm Hz}^{1/2}$ in the thermal white noise limit, which yields spin sensitivities of a few $μ_{\rm B}/{\rm Hz}^{1/2}$ ($Φ_0$ is the magnetic…
