A structure based on a dimer of silicon nanoparticles, presenting directional scattering in the visible range, was studied as a new design of an all-optical switch. The combination of spherical nanoparticles satisfying, at the same incident wavelength, the zero-backward and the minimum-forward scattering conditions, can produce either a maximum or a minimum of the scattered field in the area between the nanoparticles. The modulation of the incident wavelength can be used as switching parameter, due to the sensitivity of these conditions to it. An optimization of the dimer setup, both in the distance between the nanoparticles and the incident wavelength, was numerically performed to obtain a maximum contrast. Also, near-field and far-field distributions of the electric field have been considered.
Single nanoparticle tracking using optical microscopy is a powerful technique with many applications in biology, chemistry and material sciences. Despite significant advances, localising objects with nanometric position accuracy in a scattering environment remains challenging. Applied methods to achieve contrast are dominantly fluorescence based, with fundamental limits in the emitted photon fluxes arising from the excited-state lifetime as well as photobleaching. Furthermore, every localisation method reported to date requires signal acquisition from multiple spatial points, with consequent s…
Here we study a simple way of controlling the emitted fields of sub-wavelength nanometric sources. The system consists of arrays of nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in optical active media. The key concept is the careful tuning of NP's damping factors, which changes the eigenmode's decay rates of the whole array. This, at long time, leads to a locking of relative phases and frequencies of individual localized-surfaces-plasmons (LSPs) and, thus, controlls the emitted field. The amplitude of the LSP's oscillations can be kept constant by embedding the system in optical active media. In the case of f…
In a proposed book chapter surface plasmon polariton assisted optical switching in noble metal nanoparticle systems is discussed in the sub-band gap formalism.
We present analytical expressions for the resonance frequencies of the plasmonic modes hosted in a cylindrical nanoparticle within the quasistatic approximation. Our theoretical model gives us access to both the longitudinally and transversally polarized dipolar modes for a metallic cylinder with an arbitrary aspect ratio, which allows us to capture the physics of both plasmonic nanodisks and nanowires. We also calculate quantum mechanical corrections to these resonance frequencies due to the spill-out effect, which is of relevance for cylinders with nanometric dimensions. We go on to consider…
Whispering-gallery mode resonators host multiple trapped narrowband circulating optical resonances that find applications in quantum electrodynamics, optomechanics, and sensing. However, the spherical symmetry and low field leakage of dielectric microspheres make it difficult to probe their high-quality optical modes using far-field radiation. Even so, local field enhancement from metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) coupled to the resonators can interface the optical far-field and the bounded cavity modes. In this work, we study the interaction between whispering-gallery modes and MNP surface plasmo…

Silicon nanoparticles possess unique size-dependent optical properties due to their strong electric and magnetic resonances in the visible range. However, their widespread application has been limited, in comparison to other (e.g. metallic) nanoparticles, because their preparation on monodisperse colloids remains challenging. Exploiting the unique properties of Si nanoparticles in nano- and micro-devices calls for methods able to sort and organize them from a colloidal suspension onto specific positions of solid substrates with nanometric precision. Here, we demonstrate that surfactant-free Si…
We predict that a liquid crystal/silver nanoparticles mixture can be designed so that, in a frequency range, its effective ordinary and extraordinary permittivities have real parts of different signs. We exploit this result to design a nano-photonic device obtained by sandwiching a few hundred nanometer thick slab of the proposed mixture between two silica layers. By resorting to full-wave simulations, we show that, by varying the direction of an externally applied electric field, the device can be used as an optical modulator since its transmissivity can be switched between 0.02 and 0.4 at a …
We present an ab-initio study of the hybridization of localized surface plasmons in a metal nanoparticle dimer. The atomic structure, which is often neglected in theoretical studies of quantum nanoplasmonics, has a strong impact on the optical absorption properties when sub-nanometric gaps between the nanoparticles are considered. We demonstrate that this influences the hybridization of optical resonances of the dimer, and leads to significantly smaller electric field enhancements as compared to the standard jellium model. In addition we show that the corrugation of the metal surface at a micr…
We experimentally demonstrate a passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) operation by using a saturable absorber based on Fe3O4 nanoparticles (FONP) in magnetic fluid (MF). As a kind of transition metal oxide, the FONP has a large nonlinear optical response with a fast response time for saturable absorber. By depositing MF at the end of optical fiber ferrule, we fabricated a FONP-based saturable absorber, which enables a strong light-matter interaction owing to the confined transmitted optical field within the single mode fiber. Because of large third-order optical nonlinearities o…
Inverse design of nanoparticles for desired scattering spectra and dynamic switching between the two opposite scattering anomalies, i.e. superscattering and invisibility, is important in realizing cloaking, sensing and functional devices. However, traditionally the design process is quite complicated, which involves complex structures with many choices of synthetic constituents and dispersions. Here, we demonstrate that a well-trained deep-learning neural network can handle these issues efficiently, which can not only forwardly predict scattering spectra of multilayer nanoparticles with high p…
Based on full-wave scattering theory with self-consistent mean field approximation, we study the optical multi-stability of graphene-wrapped dielectric nanoparticles. We demonstrate that the optical bistability (OB) of the graphene-wrapped nanoparticle exist in both near-field and far-field spectra, and show the optical multi-stability arising from the contributions of higher-order terms of the incident external field. Moreover, both the optical stable region and the switching threshold values can be tuned by changing either the Fermi level or the size of the nanoparticle. Our results promise …
Developing of new rare-earth (RE)-doped optical fibres for power amplifiers and lasers requires continuous improvements in the fibre spectroscopic properties (like shape and width of the gain curve, optical quantum efficiency, resistance to spectral hole burning and photodarkening...). Silica glass as a host material for fibres has proved to be very attractive. However, some potential applications of RE-doped fibres suffer from limitations in terms of spectroscopic properties resulting from clustering or inappropriate local environment when doped into silica. To this aim, we present a new rout…
We consider light scattering by a coated magneto-plasmonic nanoparticle (MPNP) with a Kerr-type nonlinear plasmonic shell and a magneto-optic core. Such structure features two plasmon dipole modes, associated with electronic oscillations on the inner and outer surfaces of the shell. Driven in a nonlinear regime, each mode exhibits a bistable response. Bistability of an inner plasmon leads to switching between this state and a Fano resonance (Fano switching). Once the external light intensity exceeds the critical value, the bistability zones of both eigen modes overlap yielding optical tristabi…
We studied theoretically the population dynamics and the absorption spectrum of hybrid nanosystem consisted of a matal nanoparticle (MNP) and a semiconductor quantum dot(SQD). We investigated the exciton-plasmon coupling effects on the population dynamics and the absorption properties of the nanostructure. Our results show that the nonlinear optical response of the hybrid nanosystem can be greatly enhanced or depressed due to the exciton-plasmon couplings. The results obtained here may have the potential applications of nanoscale optical devices such as optical switches and quantum devices suc…
In this work we describe different types of photonic structures that allow tunability of the photonic band gap upon the application of external stimuli, as the electric or magnetic field. We review and compare two porous 1D photonic crystals: in the first one a liquid crystal has been infiltrated in the pores of the nanoparticle network, while in the second one the optical response to the electric field of metallic nanoparticles has been exploited. Then, we present a 1D photonic crystal made with indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles, and we propose this system for electro-optic tuning. Finally…
Interferometric scattering (iSCAT) microscopy has undergone significant development in recent years. It is a promising technique for imaging and tracking nanoscopic label-free objects with nanometer localization precision. The current iSCAT-based photometry technique allows quantitative estimation for the size of a nanoparticle by measuring iSCAT contrast and has been successfully applied to nano-objects smaller than the Rayleigh scattering limit. Here we provide an alternative method that overcomes such size limitations. We take into account the axial variation of iSCAT contrast and utilize a…
The plasmon resonances (modes) of a metal nanostructure can be defined as a dipole, a quadrupole, or high-order modes depending on the surface charge distribution induced by the incident field. In a non-symmetrical environment or clusters, the modes can hybridize and exhibit different behavior and properties. In this work, we study experimentally and numerically the substrate-induced hybridization of plasmonic modes of a silver nanocylinder. The applications of plasmonic nanoparticles such as refractive index sensing and enhanced spectroscopies often rely on the sustained mode spectral positio…
High-index dielectric nanoparticles have become a powerful platform for modern light science, enabling various fascinating applications, especially in nonlinear nanophotonics for which they enable special types of optical nonlinearity, such as electron-hole plasma photoexcitation, which are not inherent to plasmonic nanostructures. Here, we propose a novel geometry for highly tunable all-dielectric nanoantennas, consisting of a chain of silicon nanoparticles excited by an electric dipole source, which allows tuning their radiation properties via electron-hole plasma photoexcitation. We show th…
Transport properties of a single plasmon interacting with a hybrid system composed of a semiconductor quantum dot (SQD) and a metal nanoparticle (MNP) coupled to one-dimensional surface plasmonic waveguide are investigated theoretically via the real-space approach. We considered that the MNP-SQD interaction leads to the formation of a hybrid exciton and the transmission and reflection of a single incident plasmon could be controlled by adjusting the frequency of the classical control field applied to the MNP-SQD hybrid nanosystem, the kinds of metallic nanoparticles and the background media, r…

We conduct a theoretical study of the bistable optical response of a nanoparticle heterodimer comprised of a closely spaced semiconductor quantum dot and metal nanoparticle. The bistable nature of the response results from the interplay between the quantum dot's optical nonlinearity and its self-action (feedback) originating from the presence of the metal nanoparticle. We show that the feedback is governed by a complex valued coupling parameter $G$. Both the real and imaginary parts of $G$ ($G_\mathrm{R}$ and $G_\mathrm{I}$) play an important role in the occurrence of bistability, which is man…
A new mechanism of longitudinal confinement of optical energy via coupled plasmon modes is proposed in chains of noble metal nanoparticles embedded in a graded dielectric medium, which is analogous to the confinement of electrons in semiconductor quantum wells. In these systems, one can control the transmission of optical energy by varying the graded refractive index of the host medium or the separation between the nanoparticles to realize the photonic analogue of electronic transistors. Possible passband tunability by nanoparticle spacing and modulation of the refractive index in the host med…

This concept is based on ultrafast generation of electron-hole plasma within such nanoparticle, drastically changing its transient dielectric permittivity. This allows to manipulate by both electric and magnetic nanoparticle responses, resulting in dramatic changes of its extinction cross section and scattering diagram. Specifically, we demonstrate the effect of ultrafast switching-on a Hu…
Experimental evidence of mode-selective evanescent power coupling at telecommunication frequencies with efficiencies up to 75 % from a tapered optical fiber to a carefully designed metal nanoparticle plasmon waveguide is presented. The waveguide consists of a two-dimensional square lattice of lithographically defined Au nanoparticles on an optically thin silicon membrane. The dispersion and attenuation properties of the waveguide are analyzed using the fiber taper. The high efficiency of power transfer into these waveguides solves the coupling problem between conventional optics and plasmonic …
By using the real-space method, switching of a single plasmon interacting with a hybrid nanosystem composed of a semiconductor quantum dot (SQD) and a metallic nanoparticle (MNP) coupled to one-dimensional surface plasmonic waveguide is investigated theoretically. We discussed that the dipole coupling between an exciton and a localized surface plasmon results in the formation of a hybrid exciton and the transmission and reflection of the propagating single plasmon could be controlled by changing the interparticle distance between the SQD and the MNP and the size of the nanoparticles. The contr…
We propose a novel approach for efficient tuning of optical properties of a high refractive index subwavelength nanoparticle with a magnetic Mie-type resonance by means of femtosecond laser irradiation. This concept is based on ultrafast photo-injection of dense (>10^20 cm^-3) electron-hole plasma within such nanoparticle, drastically changing its transient dielectric permittivity. This allows to manipulate by both electric and magnetic nanoparticle responses, resulting in dramatic changes of its scattering diagram and scattering cross section. We experimentally demonstrate 20 % tuning of refl…
High-index spherical nanoparticles with low material losses support sharp high-Q electric and magnetic resonances and exhibit a number of interesting optical phenomena. Developments in fabrication techniques have enabled the further study of their properties and the investigation of related optical effects. After deposition on a substrate, the optical properties of a particle change dramatically due to mutual interaction. Here, we consider a silicon spherical nanoparticle on a dielectric one-layered substrate. At the normal incidence of light, the layer thickness controls the contribution of t…
The strong-field control of plasmonic nanosystems opens up new perspectives for nonlinear plasmonic spectroscopy and petahertz electronics. Questions, however, remain regarding the nature of nonlinear light-matter interactions at sub-wavelength spatial and ultrafast temporal scales. Addressing this challenge, we investigated the strong-field control of the plasmonic response of Au nanoshells with a SiO$_2$ core to an intense laser pulse. We show that the photoelectron energy spectrum from these core-shell nanoparticles displays a striking transition between the weak and strong-field regime. Th…
In the last years there have been multiple proposals in nanophotonics to mimic topological condensed matter systems. However, nanoparticles have degrees of freedom that atoms lack of, like dimensions or shape, which can be exploited to explore topology beyond electronics. Elongated nanoparticles can act like projectors of the electric field in the direction of the major axis. Then, by orienting them in an array the coupling between them can be tuned, allowing to open a gap in an otherwise gapless system. As a proof of the potential of the use of orientation of nanoparticles for topology, we st…
The active tuning of the structural colour in photonic crystals by an electric field represents an effective external stimulus with impact on light transmission manipulation. In this work we present this effect in a photonic crystal device with alternating layers of Silver and Titanium dioxide nanoparticles showing shifts of around 10 nm for an applied voltage of 10 V only. The accumulation of charges at the metal/dielectric interface with applied electric field leads to an effective increase of the charges contributing to the plasma frequency in Silver. This initiates a blue shift of the Silv…
We study theoretically the quantum optical properties of hybrid molecules composed of an individual quantum dot and a metallic nanoparticle. We calculate the resonance fluorescence of this hybrid system. Its incoherent part, the one arising from nonlinear quantum processes, results to be enhanced by more than two orders of magnitude as compared to that in the absence of the metallic nanoparticle. Scattering spectra at different excitation powers and nonperturbative calculations of intensity-field correlation functions show that this system can act as a nonlinear ultra-compact two-photon switch…
The study of metallic nanoparticles has a long tradition in linear and nonlinear optics [1], with current emphasis on the ultrafast dynamics, size, shape and collective effects in their optical response [2-6]. Nanoparticles also represent the ultimate confined geometry:high surface-to-volume ratios lead to local field enhancements and a range of dramatic modifications of the material's properties and phase diagram [7-9]. Confined gallium has become a subject of special interest as the light-induced structural phase transition recently observed in gallium films [10, 11] has allowed for the demo…
The full control of the fundamental photophysics of nanosystems at frequencies as high as few THz is key for tunable and ultrafast nano-photonic devices and metamaterials. Here we combine geometrical and ultrafast control of the optical properties of halide perovskite nanoparticles, which constitute a prominent platform for nanophotonics. The pulsed photoinjection of free carriers across the semiconducting gap leads to a sub-picosecond modification of the far-field electromagnetic properties that is fully controlled by the geometry of the system. When the nanoparticle size is tuned so as to ac…
