A domain wall (DW) in a nanowire can propagate under a longitudinal magnetic field by emitting spin waves (SWs). We numerically investigated the properties of SWs emitted by the DW motion, such as frequency and wavenumber, and their relation with the DW motion. For a wire with a low transverse anisotropy and in a field above a critical value, a DW emits SWs to both sides (bow and stern), while it oscillates and propagates at a low average speed. For a wire with a high transverse anisotropy and in a weak field, the DW emits mostly stern waves, while the DW distorts itself and DW center propagates forward like a drill at a relative high speed.
We study the domain wall motion in a disordered weak ferromagnet, induced by injecting a spin current from a strong ferromagnet. Starting from the spin diffusion equation describing the spin accumulation in the weak ferromagnet, we calculate the force and torque acting on the domain wall. We also study the ensuing domain wall dynamics, and suggest a possible measurement method for detecting the domain wall motion via measuring the additional resistance.
Magnon emission and excitation by a relativistic domain wall at a constant velocity in antiferromagnet is theoretically studied. A pair emission due to a quadratic magnon coupling is shown to be dominant. The emission corresponds in the comoving frame to a vacuum polarization induced by a zero-energy instability of the Lorentz-boosted anomalous response function. The emission rate is sensitive to the magnon dispersion and wall profile, and is significantly enhanced for a thin wall with velocity close to the effective light velocity. The Ohmic damping constant due to magnon excitation at low ve…
The purpose of the research is the construction of the analytical model for description of spin-polarized current-driven ferromagnetic domain wall motion with a skyrmion building block. The dependence of velocity of ferromagnetic domain wall motion with a skyrmion building block is found as a function of driving torques and an external magnetic field strength.
We study theoretically the spin wave emission from a moving domain wall in a ferromagnet. Introducing a deformation mode describing a modulation of the wall thickness in the collective coordinate description, we show that thickness variation couples to the spin wave linearly and induces spin wave emission. The dominant emitted spin wave turns out to be polarized in the out-of wall plane ($ϕ$)-direction. The emission contributes to the Gilbert damping parameter proportional to $\hbarω_ϕ/K$, the ratio of the angular frequency $ω_ϕ$ of $ϕ$ and the easy-axis anisotropy energy $K$.
We report on the time-resolved investigation of current- and field-induced domain wall motion in perpendicularly magnetized microwires exhibiting asymmetric exchange interaction by means of scanning transmission x-ray microscopy using a time step of 200 ps. Dynamical domain wall velocities on the order of 50-100 m s$^{-1}$ were observed. The improvement in the temporal resolution allowed us to observe the absence of incubation times for the motion of the domain wall, together with indications for a negligible inertia. Furthermore, we observed that, for short current and magnetic field pulses, …
Spin waves can induce domain wall motion in ferromagnets. We derive the equations of motion for a transverse domain wall driven by spin waves. Our calculations show that the magnonic spin-transfer torque does not cause rotation-induced Walker breakdown. The amplitude of spin waves that are excited by a localized microwave field depends on the spatial profile of the field and the excitation frequency. By taking this frequency dependence into account, we show that a simple one-dimensional model may reproduce much of the puzzling frequency dependence observed in early numerical studies.
We discover that the way spin-waves exert magnetic torques in multiferroic materials can cause not only domain wall motion, but also magnetization dynamics for homogeneous magnetization textures. Interestingly, the domain wall motion can be controlled via purely electrical means with the spin-waves being generated by an ac electric field $E$ while the direction of the wall motion also is sensitive to an applied dc $E$ field. Moreover, we determine the interaction between spin-transfer torque from an electric current and a magnetic domain wall in multiferroics and show that the Walker breakdown…
We theoretically study the antiferromagnetic domain wall motion actuated by an inhomogeneous external magnetic field. The Lagrangian and the equations of motion of antiferromagnetic spins under an inhomogeneous magnetic field are derived, first in terms of the Néel vector, and then using collective coordinates of the domain wall. A solution is found that describes the actuation of a domain wall by an inhomogeneous field, in which the motion is initiated by a paramagnetic response of wall magnetization, which is then driven by a Stern-Gerlach like force. The effects of pinning potential are als…
The relation between domain wall motion and intensity of driven current is examined in a phenomenological theory where the kinetic energy is expanded as a series of polynomial function of current density just as the Landau phase transition theory. The dependency of velocity on current density is root square which degenerates into linear if the current is much higher than the critical value. The theory result is consistent with several previous experiments and also can explain the change of critical current in the presence of temperature. The role of temperature plays in the dynamics of domain …
Fast domain wall motion in systems with perpendicular magnetization is necessary for many novel applications such as the racetrack memory, domain wall logic devices and artificial synapses. The domain wall speed has been greatly improved after the demonstration of current driven domain wall motion using the spin transfer torque, and later achieved another leap due to the combined effect of spin-Hall effect and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). However, only Neel wall can be effectively driven in the latter system. In this paper, we show that both Bloch and Neel domain walls can be effec…
We theoretically study a ferrimagnetic domain-wall motion driven by a rotating magnetic field. We find that, depending on the magnitude and the frequency of the rotating field, the dynamics of a ferrimagnetic domain wall can be classified into two regimes. First, when the frequency is lower than a certain critical frequency set by the field magnitude, there is a stationary solution for the domain-wall dynamics, where a domain-wall in-plane magnetization rotates in-phase with the external field. The field-induced precession of the domain wall gives rise to the translational motion of the domain…
The antiferromagnetic domain wall dynamics is currently a hot topic in mesoscopic magnetic systems. In this work, it is found that, based on the Thiele approach, the motion of an antiferromagnetic domain wall is described by the Duffing equation. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the antiferromagnetic domain wall can be used as a Duffing oscillator, and the transition between the periodic and chaotic motion can be used to detect the periodic signal in the presence of the white noise. Furthermore, we calculate the bifurcation diagram and Lyapunov exponents to study the chaotic behavior of …

A complete analytical description of the dynamics of current and field driven transverse domain walls under the influence of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction using the $ϕ- q$ model will be given. Five different scenarios will be observed where the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya vector is either parallel or perpendicular to the easy axis anisotropy of the system and a direct reversal respectively precessional motion will be assumed.
In this paper, we study the domain wall motion induced by vertical current flow in asymmetric magnetic tunnel junctions. The domain wall motion in the free layer is mainly dictated by the current-induced field-like torque acting on it. We show that as we increase the MTJ asymmetry, by considering dissimilar ferromagnetic contacts, a linear-in-voltage field-like torque behavior is accompanied by an enhancement in the domain wall displacement efficiency and a higher degree of bidirectional propagation. Our analysis is based on a combination of a quantum transport model and magnetization dynamics…
Extended numerical simulations enable to ascertain the diffusive behavior at finite temperatures of chiral walls and skyrmions in ultra-thin model Co layers exhibiting symmetric - Heisenberg - as well as antisymmetric - Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya - exchange interactions. The Brownian motion of walls and skyrmions is shown to obey markedly different diffusion laws as a function of the damping parameter. Topology related skyrmion diffusion suppression with vanishing damping parameter, albeit already documented, is shown to be restricted to ultra-small skyrmion sizes or, equivalently, to ultra-low dam…
We theoretically study domain wall motion induced by an electric field in the quantum anomalous Hall states on a two-dimensional Kagome lattice with ferromagnetic order and spin-orbit coupling. We show that an electric charge is accumulated near the domain wall which indicates that the electric field drives both the accumulated charge and the domain wall with small energy dissipation. Using the linear response theory we compute the non-equilibrium spin density which exerts a non-adiabatic spin transfer torque on textures of the local magnetization. This torque emerges even when the bulk is ins…
Universality of thermally assisted magnetic domain wall motion under spin torque
We perform real-space imaging of propagating magnetic domains in the fractional quantum Hall system using spin-sensitive photoluminescence microscopy. The propagation is continuous and proceeds in the direction of the conventional current, i.e. opposite to the electron flow direction. The mechanism of motion is shown to be connected to polarized nuclear spins around the domain walls. The propagation velocity increases when nuclei are depolarized, and decreases when the source-drain current generating this nuclear polarization is increased. We discuss how these phenomena may arise from spin int…
The fascinating high-speed field-driven domain wall (DW) motion along ferrimagnetic nanowires near the angular momentum compensation point (AMCP) is solved based on the generic ferrimagnetic dynamics. The physics of the absences of precessional torque and infinite high Walker breakdown field at the AMCP is proved under general conditions. Based on the energy conservation principle, an almost exact DW velocity formula, valid beyond the Walker breakdown field, is obtained. Our results agree with all existing experiments and simulations. This theory provides useful guidances to DW manipulation.
Domain walls in ferromagnetic nanowires are potential building-blocks of future technologies such as racetrack memories, in which data encoded in the domain walls are transported using spin-polarised currents. However, the development of energy-efficient devices has been hampered by the high current densities needed to initiate domain wall motion. We show here that a remarkable reduction in the critical current density can be achieved for in-plane magnetised coupled domain walls in CoFe/Ru/CoFe synthetic ferrimagnet tracks. The antiferromagnetic exchange coupling between the layers leads to si…
Manipulation of magnetic domain walls can be used to improve the capabilities of the next generation of memory and sensing devices. Materials of recent interest for such devices include heterostructures of ultrathin ferromagnets sandwiched between a heavy metal and an oxide, where spin-orbit coupling and broken inversion symmetry give rise to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), stabilizing chiral domain walls. The efficiency of the motion of these chiral domain walls may be controlled using in-plane magnetic fields. This property has been used for measurement of DMI strength. While mi…
Spin-orbit torque provides a powerful means of manipulating domain walls along magnetic wires. However, the current density required for domain wall motion is still too high to realize low power devices. Here we experimentally demonstrate helicity-dependent domain wall motion by combining synchronized femtosecond laser pulses and short current pulses in Co/Ni/Co ultra-thin film wires with perpendicular magnetization. Domain wall can remain pinned under one laser circular helicity while depinned by the opposite circular helicity. Thanks to the all-optical helicity-dependent effect, the threshol…
Magnetic friction is a form of non-contact friction arising from the dissipation of energy in a magnet due to spin reorientation in a magnetic field. In this paper we study magnetic friction in the context of micromagnetics, using our recent implementation of smooth spring-driven motion [Phys. Rev. E. 97, 053301 (2018)] to simulate ring-down measurements in two setups where domain wall dynamics is induced by mechanical motion. These include a single thin film with a domain wall in an external field and a setup mimicking a magnetic cantilever tip and substrate, in which the two magnets interact…
We report a theoretical overview of the magnetic domain wall behavior under an electric current in infinitely-long nanotubes with azimuthal magnetization, combining the $1$D analytic model and micromagnetic simulations. We highlight effects that, besides spin-transfer torques already largely understood in flat strips, arise specifically in the tubular geometry: the \OErsted field and curvature-induced magnetic anisotropy resulting both from exchange and material growth. Depending on both the geometry of the tube and the strength of the azimuthal anisotropy, Bloch or Néel walls arise at rest, r…
We theoretically study the current-induced dynamics of a domain wall in a ferromagnetic nanotube by developing a theory for the orbital angular momentum of a domain wall and the current-induced torque on it. Specifically, a domain wall with nontrivial magnetization winding along the circumference is shown to possess finite orbital angular momentum, which is proportional to the product of its Skyrmion charge and position, and the current is shown to exert a torque changing the orbital angular momentum of the domain wall and thereby drives it. The current-induced torque is interpreted as the tra…
Recently it has been recognized that the electromotive force (emf) can be induced just by the spin precession where the generation of the electromotive force has been considered as a real-space topological pumping effect. It has been shown that the amount of the electromotive force is independent of the functionality of the localized moments. It was also demonstrated that the rigid domain wall (DW) motion cannot generate electromotive force in the system. Based on real-space topological pumping approach in the current study we show that the electromotive force can be induced by rigid motion of…
We investigate ferrimagnetic domain wall dynamics induced by circularly polarized spin waves theoretically and numerically. We find that the direction of domain wall motion depends on both the circular polarization of spin waves and the sign of net spin density of ferrimagnet. Below the angular momentum compensation point, left- (right-) circularly polarized spin waves push a domain wall towards (away from) the spin-wave source. Above the angular momentum compensation point, on the other hand, the direction of domain wall motion is reversed. This bidirectional motion originates from the fact t…
We demonstrate optical manipulation of the position of a domain wall in a dilute magnetic semiconductor, GaMnAsP. Two main contributions are identified. Firstly, photocarrier spin exerts a spin transfer torque on the magnetization via the exchange interaction. The direction of the domain wall motion can be controlled using the helicity of the laser. Secondly, the domain wall is attracted to the hot-spot generated by the focused laser. Unlike magnetic field driven domain wall depinning, these mechanisms directly drive domain wall motion, providing an optical tweezer like ability to position and…
We predict a mechanism to controllably manipulate domain walls in kagome antiferromagnets via a single linearly polarized spin-wave source. We show by means of atomistic spin dynamics simulations of antiferromagnets with kagome structure that the speed and direction of the domain wall motion can be regulated by only tuning the frequency of the applied spin-wave. Starting from microscopics, we establish an effective action and derive the corresponding equations of motion for the spin-wave-driven domain wall. Our analytical calculations reveal that the coupling of two spin-wave modes inside the …
Chiral domain walls of Neel type emerge in heterostructures that include heavy metal (HM) and ferromagnetic metal (FM) layers owing to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction at the HM/FM interface. In developing storage class memories based on the current induced motion of chiral domain walls, it remains to be seen how dense such domain walls can be packed together. Here we show that a universal short range repulsion that scales with the strength of the DM interaction exists among chiral domain walls. The distance between the two walls can be reduced with application of out of plane field,…
