We study current-induced dynamics of a magnetic domain wall by solving a time-dependent Schrödinger equation combined with Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in a one-dimensional electron system coupled to localized spins. Two types of domain-wall motions are observed depending on the hard-axis anisotropy, $K_{\perp}$, of the localized spin system. For small values of $K_{\perp}$, the magnetic domain wall shows a streaming motion driven by spin transfer. In contrast, for large values of $K_{\perp}$, a stick-slip motion driven by momentum transfer is obtained. We clarify the origin of these characters of domain-wall motions in terms of the dynamics of one-particle energy levels and distribution functions.
We theoretically study the current-induced dynamics of a domain wall in a ferromagnetic nanotube by developing a theory for the orbital angular momentum of a domain wall and the current-induced torque on it. Specifically, a domain wall with nontrivial magnetization winding along the circumference is shown to possess finite orbital angular momentum, which is proportional to the product of its Skyrmion charge and position, and the current is shown to exert a torque changing the orbital angular momentum of the domain wall and thereby drives it. The current-induced torque is interpreted as the tra…
Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) measurements as a function of temperature, frequency, and dynamic force amplitude are used to perform a detailed study of the domain wall motion in LaAlO3. In previous DMA measurements Harrison et al.[Phys. Rev. B69,144101(2004)] found evidence for dynamic phase transitions of ferroelastic domain walls in LaAlO3. In the present work we focus on the creep-to-relaxation region of domain wall motion using two complementary methods. We determine, in addition to dynamic susceptibility data, waiting time distributions of strain jerks during slowly increasing stress.…
Ab initio study of edge effect on relative motion of walls in carbon nanotubes
We perform a $\mathbf{k \cdot p}$ theory analysis of the spectra of the lowest energy and excited states of the excitons in few-layer atomically thin films of InSe taking into account in-plane electric polarizability of the film and the influence of the encapsulation environment. For the thinner films, the lowest-energy state of the exciton is weakly indirect in momentum space, with its dispersion showing minima at a layer-number-dependent wave number, due to an inverted edge of a relatively flat topmost valence band branch of the InSe film spectrum and we compute the activation energy from th…
We present a quantitative investigation of magnetic domain wall pinning in thin magnets with perpendicular anisotropy. A self-consistent description exploiting the universal features of the depinning and thermally activated sub-threshold creep regimes observed in the field driven domain wall velocity, is used to determine the effective pinning parameters controlling the domain wall dynamics: the effective height of pinning barriers, the depinning threshold, and the velocity at depinning. Within this framework, the analysis of results published in the literature allows for a quantitative compar…
The 1T-phase layered PtX2 chalcogenides has attracted widespread interest due to its thickness dependent metal-semiconductor transition driven by strong interlayer coupling. While the ground state properties of this paradigmatic material system have been widely explored, its fundamental excitation spectrum remains poorly understood. Here we combine first principles calculations with momentum (q) resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy (q-EELS) to study the collective excitations in 1T-PtSe2 from the monolayer limit to the bulk. At finite momentum transfer all the spectra are dominated by tw…
The ferromagnetic phase of Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ is widely considered to be a topological Weyl semimetal, with evidence for momentum-space monopoles of Berry curvature from transport and spectroscopic probes. As the bandstructure is highly sensitive to the magnetic order, attention has focused on anomalies in magnetization, susceptibility and transport measurements that are seen well below the Curie temperature, leading to speculation that a "hidden" phase coexists with ferromagnetism. Here we report spatially-resolved measurements by Kerr effect microscopy that identify this phase. We find that t…
Semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes are classified into two types by means of orbital angular momentum of valley state, which is useful to study their low energy electronic properties in finite-length. The classification is given by an integer $d$, which is the greatest common divisor of two integers $n$ and $m$ specifying the chirality of nanotubes, by analyzing cutting lines. For the case that $d$ is equal to or greater than four, two lowest subbands from two valleys have different angular momenta with respect to the nanotube axis. Reflecting the decoupling of two valleys, discrete e…
We study domain wall (DW) motion induced by spin waves (magnons) in the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). The DMI exerts a torque on the DW when spin waves pass through the DW, and this torque represents a linear momentum exchange between the spin wave and the DW. Unlike angular momentum exchange between the DW and spin waves, linear momentum exchange leads to a rotation of the DW plane rather than a linear motion. In the presence of an effective easy plane anisotropy, this DMI induced linear momentum transfer mechanism is significantly more efficient than angular momentum t…
Antiferromagnetic topological insulators harbor topological in-gap surface states protected by an anti-unitary $S$ symmetry, which is broken by the inevitable presence of domain walls. Whether an antiferromagnetic topological insulator with domain walls is gapless and metallic on its topological surfaces remains to be elucidated. We show that a single non-statistical index characterizing the magnetic order of domain wall-decorated antiferromagnetic topological insulator, referred to as the Ising moment, determines the topological surface gap, which can be zero even when the $S$ symmetry is man…
We investigate ferrimagnetic domain wall dynamics induced by circularly polarized spin waves theoretically and numerically. We find that the direction of domain wall motion depends on both the circular polarization of spin waves and the sign of net spin density of ferrimagnet. Below the angular momentum compensation point, left- (right-) circularly polarized spin waves push a domain wall towards (away from) the spin-wave source. Above the angular momentum compensation point, on the other hand, the direction of domain wall motion is reversed. This bidirectional motion originates from the fact t…
