We perform real-space imaging of propagating magnetic domains in the fractional quantum Hall system using spin-sensitive photoluminescence microscopy. The propagation is continuous and proceeds in the direction of the conventional current, i.e. opposite to the electron flow direction. The mechanism of motion is shown to be connected to polarized nuclear spins around the domain walls. The propagation velocity increases when nuclei are depolarized, and decreases when the source-drain current generating this nuclear polarization is increased. We discuss how these phenomena may arise from spin interactions along the domain walls.
We present an enhanced diffusion of nuclear spin polarization in fractional quantum Hall domain phases at $ν= 2/3$. Resistively-detected NMR mediated by electrically driven domain-wall motion is used as a probe of local nuclear polarization, manifesting pumping-dependent signal saturation behavior. This reveals that a relatively homogeneous polarization profile spreads even to places distant from pinning centers of the domain walls. We attribute this to the fact that the pumped nuclear polarization near the domain walls rapidly diffuses into the domains where nuclei experience Knight fields on…
We present fractional quantum Hall domain walls confined in a gate-defined wire structure. Our experiments utilize spatial oscillation of domain walls driven by radio frequency electric fields to cause nuclear magnetic resonance. The resulting spectra are discussed in terms of both large quadrupole fields created around the wire and hyperfine fields associated with the oscillating domain walls. This provides the experimental fact that the domain walls survive near the confined geometry despite of potential deformation, by which a localized magnetic resonance is allowed in electrical means.
Ultrathin ferromagnetic strips with high perpendicular anisotropy have been proposed for the development of memory devices where the information is coded in tiny domains separated by domain walls. The design of practical devices requires creating, manipulating and detecting domain walls in ferromagnetic strips. Recent observations have shown highly efficient current-driven domain wall dynamics in multilayers lacking structural symmetry, where the walls adopt a chiral structure and can be driven at high velocities. However, putting such a device into practice requires the continuous and synchro…
A successful and promising device for the physical implementation of electron spin-valley based qubits is the Transition Metal Dichalcogenide monolayer (TMD-ML) semiconductor quantum dot. The electron spin in TMD-ML semiconductor quantum dots can be isolated and controlled with high accuracy, but it still suffers from decoherence due to the unavoidable coupling with the surrounding environment, such as nuclear spin environments. A common tool to investigate systems like the one considered in this work is the density matrix formalism by presenting an exact master equation for a central spin (sp…
In this paper, we develop the mathematical framework to describe the physical phenomenon behind the equilibrium configuration joining two antiferromagnetic domains. We firstly define the total energy of the system and deduce the governing equations by minimizing it with respect to the field variables. Then, we solve the resulting system of nonlinear PDEs together with proper initial and boundary conditions by varying the orientation of the 90$^{\circ}$ domain wall (DW) configuration along the sample. Finally, the angular dependence of elastic and magnetoelastic energies as well as of incompati…
Domain walls, topological defects that define the frontier between regions of different stacking in multilayer graphene, have proved to host exciting physics. The ability of tuning these topological defects in-situ in an electronic transport experiment brings a wealth of possibilities in terms of fundamental understanding of domain walls as well as for electronic applications. Here, we demonstrate through a MEMS (micro-electromechanical system) actuator and magnetoresistance measurements the effect of domain walls in multilayer graphene quantum Hall effect. Reversible and controlled uniaxial s…
The electron spin in a semiconductor quantum dot can be coherently controlled by an external electric field, an effect called electric-dipole spin resonance (EDSR). Several mechanisms can give rise to the EDSR effect, among which there is a hyperfine mechanism, where the spin-electric coupling is mediated by the electron-nucleus hyperfine interaction. Here, we investigate the influence of frequency modulation (FM) on the spin-flip efficiency. Our results reveal that FM plays an important role in the hyperfine mechanism. Without FM, the electric field almost cannot flip the electron spin; the s…
Hole spin qubits are frontrunner platforms for scalable quantum computers, but state-of-the-art devices suffer from noise originating from the hyperfine interactions with nuclear defects. We show that these interactions have a highly tunable anisotropy that is controlled by device design and external electric fields. This tunability enables sweet spots where the hyperfine noise is suppressed by an order of magnitude and is comparable to isotopically purified materials. We identify surprisingly simple designs where the qubits are highly coherent and are largely unaffected by both charge and hyp…
We propose a method to all-electrically control a domain-wall position in a ferromagnetic nanowire with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The strength of this interaction can be controlled by an external electric field, which in turn allows a fine tuning of the pinning potential of a spin-spiral domain wall. It allows to create more mobile pinning sites and can also be advantageous for ultra-low power electronics.
The growth of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) inside host SWCNTs remains a compelling alternative to the conventional catalyst induced growth processes. It not only provides a catalyst free process but the ability to control the constituents of the inner tube if appropriate starting molecules are used. We report herein the growth of inner SWCNTs from $^{13}$C labeled toluene and natural carbon C$_{60}$. The latter molecule is essentially a stopper which acts to retain the smaller toluene. The Raman spectrum of the inner nanotubes is anomalous as it contains a highly isotope shifted "tail"…
We investigate the optical control possibilities of spin-valley qubit carried by single electrons localized in nanostructures of monolayer TMDs, including small quantum dots formed by lateral heterojunction and charged impurities. The quantum controls are discussed when the confinement induces valley hybridization and when the valley hybridization is absent. We show that the bulk valley and spin optical selection rules can be inherited in different forms in the two scenarios, both of which allow the definition of spin-valley qubit with desired optical controllability. We also investigate nucle…
We study theoretically the in-plane electromagnetic response and the exciton-plasmon interactions for an experimentally feasible carbon nanotube (CN) film systems composed of parallel aligned periodic semiconducting CN arrays embedded in an ultrathin finite-thickness dielectric. For homogeneous single-CN films, the intertube coupling and thermal broadening bring the exciton and interband plasmon resonances closer together. They can even overlap due to the inhomogeneous broadening for films composed of array mixtures with a slight CN diameter distribution. In such systems the real part of the r…
We show that [VO(TPP)] (vanadyl tetraphenylporphyrinate) is a promising system suitable to implement quantum computation algorithms based on encoding information in multi-level (qudit) units. Indeed, it embeds an electronic spin 1/2 coupled through hyperfine interaction to a nuclear spin 7/2, both characterized by remarkable coherence. We demonstrate this by an extensive broadband nuclear magnetic resonance study, which allow us to characterize the nuclear spin-Hamiltonian and to measure the spin dephasing time as a function of the magnetic field. In addition, we combine targeted measurements …
We report the interplay between two different topological phases in condensed matter physics, the magnetic chiral domain wall (DW), and the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect. We show that the chiral DW driven by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) can divide the uniform domain into several zones where the neighboring zone possesses opposite quantized Hall conductance. The separated domain with a chiral edge state (CES) can be continuously modified by external magnetic field-induced domain expansion and thermal fluctuation, which gives rise to the reconfigurable QAH effect. More interesti…
Chiral magnetism, wherein there is a preferred sense of rotation of the magnetization, has become a key aspect for future spintronic applications. It determines the chiral nature of magnetic textures, such as skyrmions, domain walls or spin spirals, and a specific magnetic chirality is often required for spintronic applications. Current research focuses on identifying and controlling the interactions that define the magnetic chirality. The influence of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI) and, recently, the dipolar interactions have previously been reported. Here, we experi…
We study theoretically the spin fluctuations of nuclei in quantum dots. We employ the central spin model which accounts for the hyperfine interaction of the nuclei with the electron spin. We present an analytical solution in the frame of the box model approximation where all hyperfine coupling constants are assumed to be equal. These results are in good agreement with numerical simulations. We demonstrate that in rather high magnetic field the nuclear spin noise spectra has a two-peak structure centered at the nuclear Zeeman frequency with the shape of the spectrum controlled by the distributi…
We propose energy efficient strain control of domain wall (DW) in a perpendicularly magnetized nanoscale racetrack on a piezoelectric substrate that can implement multi state synapse to be utilized in neuromorphic computing platforms. In conjunction with SOT from to a current flowing in the heavy metal layer, strain is generated by applying a voltage across the piezoelectric. Such a strain is mechanically transferred to the racetrack and modulates the Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy (PMA). When different voltages are applied (i.e. different strains are generated), it can translate the DW to …
The nuclear spin of a phosphorus atom in silicon has been used as a quantum bit in various quantum-information experiments. It has been proposed that this nuclear-spin qubit can be efficiently controlled by an ac electric field, when embedded in a two electron dot-donor setup subject to intrinsic or artificial spin-orbit interaction. Exposing the qubit to control electric fields in that setup exposes it to electric noise as well. In this work, we describe the effect of electric noise mechanisms, such as phonons and $1/f$ charge noise, and estimate the corresponding decoherence time scales of t…
We demonstrate the controlled coherent transfer of topological domain walls in a one-dimensional non-Hermitian chain of interacting Bose-Einstein condensates. The topological protection stems from a spatially patterned pump in an open-dissipative system. As a testbed setup of the proposed phenomenon, we consider a chain of coupled micropillars with embedded quantum wells, possessing exciton-polariton resonances. The transfer of a domain wall is driven by spatially localised, adiabatic pump modulation in the vicinity of the domain wall. The stochastic calculations prove the coherent nature of t…
We discover that the way spin-waves exert magnetic torques in multiferroic materials can cause not only domain wall motion, but also magnetization dynamics for homogeneous magnetization textures. Interestingly, the domain wall motion can be controlled via purely electrical means with the spin-waves being generated by an ac electric field $E$ while the direction of the wall motion also is sensitive to an applied dc $E$ field. Moreover, we determine the interaction between spin-transfer torque from an electric current and a magnetic domain wall in multiferroics and show that the Walker breakdown…
Magnetic skyrmions are localized chiral spin textures, which offer great promise to store and process information at the nanoscale. In the presence of asymmetric exchange interactions, their chirality, which governs their dynamics, is generally considered as an intrinsic parameter set during the sample deposition. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate that a gate voltage can control this key parameter. We probe the chirality of skyrmions and chiral domain walls by observing the direction of their current-induced motion and show that a gate voltage can reverse it. This local and dynamical…
A next-generation memory device utilizing a three-dimensional nanowire system requires the reliable control of domain wall motion. In this letter, domain walls are studied in cylindrical nanowires consisting of alternating segments of cobalt and nickel. The material interfaces acting as domain wall pinning sites, are utilized in combination with current pulses, to control the position of the domain wall, which is monitored using magnetoresistance measurements. Magnetic force microscopy results further confirm the occurrence of current assisted domain wall depinning. Data bits are therefore shi…
An energy-efficient voltage controlled domain wall device for implementing an artificial neuron and synapse is analyzed using micromagnetic modeling in the presence of room temperature thermal noise. By controlling the domain wall motion utilizing spin transfer or spin orbit torques in association with voltage generated strain control of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, different positions of the domain wall are realized in the free layer of a magnetic tunnel junction to program different synaptic weights. The feasibility of scaling of suc…
We study theoretically domain wall (DW) magnons-elementary collective excitations of magnetic DWs -- in easy-axis layered van der Waals (vdW) antiferromagnets, where they behave as normal modes of coupled spin superfluids. We uncover that, due to spin-charge coupling in vdW magnets, such DW magnons can be activated by voltage-induced torques, thereby providing a path for their low-dissipation and nanoscale excitation. Moreover, the electrical activation and the number of DW magnons at a frequency can be controlled by applying symmetry-breaking static magnetic field, adding tunability of signal…
Spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ $^{119}$Sn nuclei in a silicon semiconductor could make excellent qubits. Nuclear spins in silicon are known to have long coherence times. Tin is isoelectronic with silicon, so we expect electrons can easily shuttle from one Sn atom to another to propagate quantum information via a hyperfine interaction that we predict, from all-electron linearized augmented plane wave density functional theory calculations, to be roughly ten times larger than intrinsic $^{29}$Si. A hyperfine-induced electro-nuclear controlled-phase (e-n-CPhase) gate operation, generated (up to local rotatio…
Memory and logic devices that encode information in magnetic domains rely on the controlled injection of domain walls to reach their full potential. In this work, we exploit the chiral coupling induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction between in-plane and out-of-plane magnetized regions of a Pt/Co/AlO\textsubscript{x} trilayer in combination with current-driven spin-orbit torques to control the injection of domain walls into magnetic conduits. We demonstrate that the current-induced domain nucleation is strongly inhibited for magnetic configurations stabilized by the chiral coupling an…
In order to address many of the challenges and bottlenecks currently experienced by traditional charge based technologies, various alternatives are being actively explored to provide potential solutions of device miniaturization and scaling in the more-than-MOORE era. Amongst these alternatives, spintronics physics and devices have recently attracted a rapidly increasing interest by exploiting the additional degree of electron's spins. For example, magnetic domain-wall racetrack-memory and logic devices have been realized via manipulating domain-wall motion. As compared to domain-wall based de…
Over the past decade, substantial progress has been made in the chemical processing (chiral enrichment, length sorting, handedness selectivity, and filling substance) of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Recently, it was shown that large, horizontally-aligned films can be created out of post-processed SWCNT solutions. Here, we use machine-vision automation and parallelization to simultaneously produce globally-aligned SWCNT films using pressure-driven filtration. Feedback control enables filtration to occur with a constant flow rate that not only improves the nematic ordering of the SWCNT…
We explore the magnetic-field-driven motion of domain walls with different chiralities in thin ferromagnetic films made of Pt/Co/Pt, Au/Co/Pt, and Pt/Co/Au. From the analysis of domain wall dynamics, we extract parameters characterizing the interaction between domain walls and weak pinning disorder of the films. The variations of domain wall structure, controlled by an in-plane field, are found to modify the characteristic length-scale of pinning in strong correlation with the domain wall width, whatever its chirality and the interaction strength between domain walls and pinning defects. These…
Speed and reliability of magnetic domain wall (DW) motion are key parameters that must be controlled to realize the full potential of DW-based magnetic devices for logic and memory applications. A major hindrance to this is extrinsic DW pinning at specific sites related to shape and material defects, which may be present even if the sample synthesis is well controlled. Understanding the origin of DW pinning and reducing it is especially desirable in electrochemically-deposited cylindrical magnetic nanowires (NWs), for which measurements of the fascinating physics predicted by theoretical compu…
