Bilayer graphene in a perpendicular electric field can host domain walls between regions of reversed field direction or interlayer stacking. The gapless modes propagating along these domain walls, while not strictly topological, nevertheless have interesting physical properties, including valley-momentum locking. A junction where two domain walls intersect forms the analogue of a quantum point contact. We study theoretically the critical behavior of this junction near the pinch-off transition, which is controlled by two separate classes of non-trivial quantum critical points. For strong interactions, the junction can host phases of unique charge and valley conductances. For weaker interactions, the low-temperature charge conductance can undergo one of two possible quantum phase transitions, each characterized by a specific critical exponent and a collapse to a universal scaling function, which we compute.

We study the conductance of a biased bilayer graphene flake with monolayer nanoribbon contacts. We find that the transmission through the bilayer ribbon strongly depends on the applied bias between the two layers and on the relative position of the monolayer contacts. Besides the opening of an energy gap on the bilayer, the bias allows to tune the electronic density on the bilayer flake, making possible the control of the electronic transmission by an external parameter.
Measurement and theory of the two-terminal conductance of monolayer and bilayer graphene in the quantum Hall regime are compared. We examine features of conductance as a function of gate voltage that allow monolayer, bilayer, and gapped samples to be distinguished, including N-shaped distortions of quantum Hall plateaus and conductance peaks and dips at the charge neutrality point. Generally good agreement is found between measurement and theory. Possible origins of discrepancies are discussed.
We study spin conductance in a ballistic and quasi-ballistic two dimensional electron system with Rasbha spin-orbit coupling. The system has a four-terminal geometry with round corners at the connection to the leads. It is found that by going from sharp corners to more round corners in the ballistic system the energy depended spin conductance goes from being relatively flat to a curve showing a series of minima and maxima. It is also found that when changing the size of the terminal area by modifying the roundness of the terminal corners the maxima and minima in the transverse spin conductance…
We study the transport properties of a twisted bilayer graphene flake contacted by two monolayer nanoribbons which act as leads. We analyze the conductance in terms of the spectra of the bilayer nanoribbon and the monolayer contacts. The low-energy transport properties are governed by the edge states with AB stacking. Remarkably, the electronic conductance in this energy region does not depend much on the relative position of the leads, in contrast with that of bilayer flakes with more symmetric stackings. We attribute this feature to the localization of these low-energy states in the AB edge …
This paper presents a method for determining the conductance matrix of multi terminal semiconductor structures with edge channels. This method appears to be applied within frameworks of the ordinary Landauer - uttiker formalism for the carrier transport analysis in the regime of both the quantum Hall Effect and the quantum spin Hall Effect. The proposed method proves to take into account principally the contribution of the probes resistance in the formation of the matrix conductance elements. Finally, the possibilities of the practical application of this method to develop new versions of anal…
Electron transport in bilayer graphene placed under a perpendicular electric field is revealed experimentally. Steep increase of the resistance is observed under high electric field; however, the resistance does not diverge even at low temperatures. The observed temperature dependence of the conductance consists of two contributions: the thermally activated (TA) conduction and the variable range hopping (VRH) conduction. We find that for the measured electric field range (0 - 1.3 V/nm) the mobility gap extracted from the TA behavior agrees well with the theoretical prediction for the band gap …
The quantum Hall state at total filling factor $ν_T=1$ in bilayer systems realizes an exciton condensate and exhibits a zero-bias tunneling anomaly, similar to the Josephson effect in the presence of fluctuations. In contrast to conventional Josephson junctions, no Fraunhofer diffraction pattern has been observed, due to disorder induced topological defects, so-called merons. We consider interlayer tunneling in the presence of microwave radiation, and find Shapiro steps in the tunneling current-voltage characteristic despite the presence of merons. Moreover, the Josephson oscillations can also…
We report electronic transport measurements of single-molecule transistor devices incorporating bipyridyl-dinitro oligophenylene-ethynylene dithiol (BPDN-DT), a molecule known to exhibit conductance switching in other measurement configurations. We observe hysteretic conductance switching in 8% of devices with measurable currents, and find that dependence of the switching properties on gate voltage is rare when compared to other single-molecule transistor devices. This suggests that polaron formation is unlikely to be responsible for switching in these devices. We discuss this and alternative …
In this paper we present a method to numerically study transverse Hall conductances using a two-terminal setup. Using nonlinear transport concepts we find that the Hall voltage dependence on the model parameters can be investigated from the difference between the injectivities from each terminal. The method is suitable to work with non-equilibrium Green's functions as well as for scattering matrix approaches. We illustrate the proposed idea by studying the quantum spin Hall effect in graphene with disordered spin-orbit scattering centers induced by adatoms. We use two distinct models, a finite…
In the bilayer quantum Hall coherent state for $ν_T$ deviating slightly from one, we show that, instead of the global order parameter, the spontaneous breaking of the pseudospin U(1) rotational symmetry is reflected by the periodic domain structure accompanying with the charged meron pairs. The motion of meron pairs induces a novel pseudospin wave. The long range order of the periodic domains in a low bias voltage range leads to the residual zero-bias peak in the tunneling conductance even when the pseudopsin Goldstone feature in a high bias voltage range can be distinct from it.
The helical state is a fundamental prerequisite for many spintronics applications and Majorana zero mode engineering in nanoscopic semiconductors. Its existence in quasi-one-dimensional nanowires was predicted to be detectable as a characteristic reentrant behavior in the conductance, which in a typical two-terminal architecture may be difficult to distinguish from other possible phenomena such as Fabry-Perot oscillations. Here we present an alternative method of helical gap detection free of the mentioned ambiguity, and based on the nonlocal conductance measurements in a three-terminal juncti…
Weyl semimetals are a new paradigmatic topological phase of matter featuring a gapless spectrum. One of its most distinctive features is the presence of Fermi arc surface states. Here, we report on atomistic simulations of the dc conductance and quantum Hall response of a minimal Weyl semimetal. By using scattering theory we show that a quantized Hall conductance with a non-vanishing longitudinal conductance emerges associated to the Fermi arc surface states with a remarkable robustness to high concentrations of defects in the system. Additionally, we predict that a slab of a Weyl semimetal wi…
We report a thorough theoretical investigation on the quantum transport of a disordered four terminal device in the presence of Rashba spin orbit coupling (RSOC) in two dimensions. Specifically we compute the behaviour of the longitudinal (charge) conductance, spin Hall conductance and spin Hall conductance fluctuation as a function of the strength of disorder and Rashba spin orbit interaction using the Landauer Buttiker formalism via Green's function technique. Our numerical calculations reveal that both the conductances diminish with disorder. At smaller values of the RSOC parameter, the lon…
Conduction between graphene layers is suppressed by momentum conservation whenever the layer stacking has a rotation. Here we show that phonon scattering plays a crucial role in facilitating interlayer conduction. The resulting dependence on orientation is radically different than previously expected, and far more favorable for device applications. At low temperatures, we predict diode-like current-voltage characteristics due to a phonon bottleneck. Simple scaling relationships give a good description of the conductance as a function of temperature, doping, rotation angle, and bias voltage, re…
Three-terminal superconductor (S) - normal metal (N) - superconductor (S) Josephson junctions are investigated. In a geometry where a T-shape normal metal is connected to three superconducting reservoirs, new sub-gap structures appear in the differential resistance for specific combinations of the superconductor chemical potentials. Those correspond to a correlated motion of Cooper pairs within the device that persist well above the Thouless energy and is consistent with the prediction of quartets formed by two entangled Cooper pairs. A simplified nonequilibrium Keldysh Green's function calcul…
Motivated by recent experiments on the conductance fluctuations in mesoscopic integr quantum Hall systems, we consider a model in which the Coulomb interactions are incorporated into the picture of edge-state transport through a single saddle-point. The occupancies of `classical' localised states in the two-dimensional electron system change due to the interactions between electrons when the gate voltage on top of the device is varied. The electrostatic potential between the localised states and the saddle-point causes fluctuations of the saddle-point potential and thus fluctuations of the tra…
Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene exhibits quasi-flat low-energy bands with Van Hove singularities close to the Fermi level. These singularities play an important role in the exotic phenomena observed in this material, such as superconductivity and magnetism, by amplifying electronic correlation effects. In this work, we study the correspondence of four-terminal conductance and the Fermi surface topology as a function of the twist angle, pressure, and energy in mesoscopic, ballistic samples of small-angle twisted bilayer graphene. We establish a correspondence between features in the wide-j…
Magnetic insulators are promising materials for the development of energy-efficient spintronics. Unlike metallic counterparts, the magnetic insulators are characterized by imaginary part of the interfacial spin mixing conductance as well in a bilayer with heavy metals and it is responsible for the field-like toque in spin-orbit torque devices. Here, we study the underlying theoretical constructs and develop a general strategy to determine the complex spin mixing conductance from the experimental results of ferromagnetic resonance and spin pumping. The results show that the imaginary part of th…
The paper concerns experimental verification of the magnitude of imaginary part of spin mixing conductance in bilayers comprising heavy metals. We present results of broadband ferromagnetic resonance studies on heterostructures consisting of Finemet thin films covered by Pt and Ta wedge layers with the aim to observe spin pumping effects and to evaluate both the real and imaginary parts of the spin mixing conductance. The experimental results are analyzed in the framework of a recent microscopic theory which allows us to estimate the value of the interfacial spin-orbit interaction and confirm …

We investigate spin-dependent transport in three--terminal mesoscopic cavities with spin--orbit coupling. Focusing on the inverse spin Hall effect, we show how injecting a pure spin current or a polarized current from one terminal generates additional charge current and/or voltage across the two output terminals. This allows to extract the spin conductance of the cavity from two purely electrical measurements on the output. We use random matrix theory to show that the spin conductance of chaotic ballistic cavities fluctuates universally about zero mesoscopic average and describe experimental i…
The Andreev bound state spectra of multi-terminal Josephson junctions form an artificial band structure, which is predicted to host tunable topological phases under certain conditions. However, the number of conductance modes between the terminals of multi-terminal Josephson junction must be few in order for this spectrum to be experimentally accessible. In this work we employ a quantum point contact geometry in three-terminal Josephson devices. We demonstrate independent control of conductance modes between each pair of terminals and access to the single-mode regime coexistent with the presen…
We develop a theory for the three-terminal nonlocal conductance in Majorana nanowires as existing in the superconductor-semiconductor hybrid structures in the presence of superconducting proximity, spin-orbit coupling, and Zeeman splitting. The key question addressed is whether such nonlocal conductance can decisively distinguish between trivial and topological Majorana scenarios in the presence of chemical potential inhomogeneity and random impurity disorder. We calculate the local electrical as well as nonlocal electrical and thermal conductance of the pristine nanowire (good zero-bias condu…
We study the transport properties of a monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) ribbon subject to a time periodic circularly polarized laser field. First, we calculate the quasienergy spectrum within the framework of the Floquet theory and analyze the nontrivial topology of the Floquet bulk gaps. The later is revealed by the presence of chiral edge states inside the bulk gaps in finite samples, in agreement with the calculation of the appropriate winding numbers as a function of both the energy and the amplitude of the laser field. The effect of the time dependent perturbation on the e…
We construct a two-channel scattering model for the triangular network of valley Hall states in interlayer-biased minimally twisted bilayer graphene from symmetry arguments and investigate electronic transport in a four-terminal setup. In the absence of forward scattering, a single phenomenological parameter tunes the network between a triplet of chiral zigzag modes and pseudo-Landau levels. Moreover, the chiral zigzag modes give rise to robust Aharonov-Bohm resonances in the longitudinal conductance in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field or an in-plane electric field. Interestingly…
Bilayer quantum Hall system at total filling factor $ν=1$ shows a rich variety of broken symmetry ground states because of the competition between the interlayer and intralayer Coulomb interactions. When the layers are sufficiently close, a bilayer system develops spontaneous interlayer phase-coherence that manifests itself through a spectacular enhancement of the zero-bias interlayer tunneling conductance. We present a theory of this tunneling conductance anomaly, and show that the zero-bias conductance is proportional to the square of the {\it quasiparticle} tunneling amplitude.
In recent years, Chebyshev polynomial expansions of tight-binding Green's functions have been successfully applied to the study of a wide range of spectral and transport properties of materials. However, the application of the Chebyshev approach to the study of quantum transport properties of noninteracting mesoscopic systems with leads has been hampered by the lack of a suitable Chebyshev expansion of Landaeur's formula or one of its equivalent formulations in terms of Green's functions in Keldysh's perturbation theory. Here, we tackle this issue by means of a hybrid approach that combines th…
Strain qualitatively changes the low-energy band structure of bilayer graphene, leading to the appearance of a pair of low-energy Dirac cones near each corner of the Brillouin zone, and a Lifshitz transition, (a saddle point in the dispersion relation) at an energy proportional to the strain [M. Mucha-Kruczynski, I.L. Aleiner, and V.I. Fal'ko, Phys. Rev. B 84, 041404 (2011)]. Here, we show that in the vicinity of the Lifshitz transition the conductance of a ballistic n-p and n-p-n junction exhibits an anomaly: a non-monotonic temperature and chemical potential dependence, with the size dependi…
A theory of spin-transport in hybrid normal metal - ferromagnetic electronic circuits is developed, taking into account non-collinear spin-accumulation. Spin-transport through resistive elements is described by 4 conductance parameters. Microscopic expression for these conductances are derived in terms of scattering matrices and explicitly calculated for simple models. The circuit theory is applied to 2-terminal and 3-terminal devices attached to ferromagnetic reservoirs.
In n-p bilayer systems an exotic phase-coherent state emerges due to Coulomb pairing of n-layer electrons with p-layer holes. Unlike Josephson junctions, the order parameter phase may be locked by matrix elements of interlayer tunneling in n-p bilayers. Here we show how the phase locking phenomenon specifies the response of the electron-hole condensate to interlayer voltages. In the absence of an applied magnetic field, the phase is steady-state (locked) at low interlayer voltages, V<V_c, however the phase increases monotonically with time (is unlocked) at V>V_c. The change in the system dynam…
In contrast to the case of ordinary quantum Hall effect, the resistance of ballistic helical edge channels in typical quantum spin-Hall experiments is non-vanishing, additive and poorly quantized. Here we present a simple argument connecting this qualitative difference with a spin relaxation in the current/voltage leads in an experimentally relevant multi-terminal bar geometry. Both the finite lead resistance and the spin relaxation contribute to a non-vanishing four-terminal edge resistance, explaining poor quantization quality. We show that corrections to the four-terminal and two-terminal r…
We study transport through a double quantum dot with interdot hopping $t$, intradot repulsion $U$ and interdot repulsion $U^{\prime}$, using the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method. At half-filling, the conductances in two-terminal series and four-terminal parallel configuration are calculated via two phase shifts for quasi-particles of double quantum dot connected to two noninteracting leads with hybridization strength $Γ$. For small values of $t/Γ$ and $U^{\prime}/U$, conductance in the two-terminal series configuration is suppressed to almost zero. In this region, plateau of conduc…
We consider the conductance of a normal-superconductor junction in bilayer graphene in the framework of the Dirac-Bogoliubov-De-Gennes equation. A remarkable suppression of the conductance at voltages just below the superconducting gap is found. This can be understood in terms of the spinor structures of the electron and hole excitations, in particular the reflected valence band hole being orthogonal to the incoming electron at normal incidence. Minor changes in response to referee reports, references updated.
The spin current can result in a spin-transfer torque in the normal-metal(NM)|ferromagnetic-insulator(FMI) or normal-metal(NM)|ferromagnetic-metal(FMM) bilayer. In the earlier study on this issue, the spin relaxations were ignored or introduced phenomenologically. In this paper, considering the FMM or FMI with spin relaxations described by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, we derive an effective spin-transfer torque and an effective spin mixing conductance in the non-Hermitian bilayer. The dependence of the effective spin mixing conductance on the system parameters (such as insulating gap, \textit{…
The edges of graphene-based systems possess unusual electronic properties, originating from the non-trivial topological structure associated to the pseudo-spinorial character of the electron wave-functions. These properties, which have no analogue for electrons described by the Schrodinger equation in conventional systems, have led to the prediction of many striking phenomena, such as gate-tunable ferromagnetism and valley-selective transport. In most cases, however, the predicted phenomena are not expected to survive the influence of the strong structural and chemical disorder that unavoidabl…
We investigate spin pumping phenomena in polycrystalline CoFeB/Pt and CoFeB/Ta bilayers and the correlation between the effective spin mixing conductance $g^{\uparrow\downarrow}_{\rm eff}$ and the obtained voltages generated by the spin-to-charge current conversion via the inverse spin Hall effect in the Pt and Ta layers. For this purpose we measure the in-plane angular dependence of the generated voltages on the external static magnetic field and we apply a model to separate the spin pumping signal from the one generated by the spin rectification effect in the magnetic layer. Our results reve…
We reveal that there exists a class of graphene structures (a sub-class of bilayer graphene nanoribbons) which has unusually strong optical response in the terahertz (THz) and far infrared (FIR) regime. The peak conductance of terahertz/FIR active bilayer ribbons is around two orders of magnitude higher than the universal conductance of $e^2/4\hbar$ observed in graphene sheets. The criterion for the terahertz/FIR active sub-class is a bilayer graphene nanoribbon with one-dimensional massless Dirac Fermion energy dispersion near the $Γ$ point. Our results overcome a significant obstacle that hi…
Motivated by recent experiments, we consider a single-electron transistor in the Kondo regime which is coupled to three leads in the presence of large bias voltages. Such a steady-state non-equilibrium system is to a large extent governed by a decoherence rate induced by the current through the dot. As the two-terminal conductance turns out to be rather insensitive to the decoherence rate, we study the conductance in a three-terminal device using perturbative renormalization group and calculate the characteristic splitting of the Kondo resonance. The interplay between potential biases and anis…
We numerically investigate the electronic transport properties between two mesoscopic graphene disks with a twist by employing the density functional theory coupled with non-equilibrium Green's function technique. By attaching two graphene leads to upper and lower graphene layers separately, we explore systematically the dependence of electronic transport on the twist angle, Fermi energy, system size, layer stacking order and twist axis. When choose different twist axes for either AA- or AB-stacked bilayer graphene, we find that the dependence of conductance on twist angle displays qualitative…
Electron transport in a two-terminal Aharonov-Bohm ring with a few short-range scatterers is investigated. An analytical expression for the conductance as a function of the electron Fermi energy and magnetic flux is obtained using the zero-range potential theory. The dependence of the conductance on positions of scatterers is studied. We have found that the conductance exhibits asymmetric Fano resonances at certain energies. The dependence of the Fano resonances on magnetic field and positions of impurities is investigated. It is found that collapse of the Fano resonances occurs and discrete e…
The long-sought Majorana fermion is expected to manifest in a topological-superconductor heterostructure as a zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP). As one promising platform for such heterostructures, we investigate the cleaved surface of the topological semimetal Sb(111) using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Remarkably, we find a robust ZBCP on some terraces of the cleaved surface, although no superconductor is present. Using quasiparticle interference imaging, Landau level spectroscopy and density functional theory, we show that the ZBCP originates from a van Hove singularity pu…
We investigate the electronic transport properties of unbiased and biased bilayer graphene nanoribbon in n-p and n-n junctions subject to a perpendicular magnetic field. Using the non-equilibrium Green's function method and the Landauer-Büttiker formalism, the conductance is studied for the cases of clean, on-site, and edge disordered bilayer graphene. We show that the lowest Hall plateau remains unchanged in the presence of disorder, whereas asymmetry destroys both the plateaus and conductance quantization. In addition, we show that disorder induces an enhancement of the conductance in the n-…
The transmission across a graphene bilayer region is calculated for two different types of connections to monolayer leads. A transfer matrix algorithm based on a tight binding model is developed to obtain the ballistic transmission beyond linear response. The two configurations are found to behave similarly when no gate voltage is applied. For a finite gate voltage, both develop a conductance gap characteristic of a biased bilayer, but only one shows a pronounced conductance step at the gap edge. A gate voltage domain wall applied to the bilayer region renders the conductance of the two config…
An expression for the transmission matrix based conductance is provided for the propagation of scalar waves in certain bifurcated discrete waveguides using the paradigm of a three-terminal Landauer-Buttiker junction. It is found that the conductance across the terminals of bifurcated branches forming a sharp corner, interpreted as a controller of `leakage' flux, can be tuned by manipulating the number of channels and the type of lateral confinement. Natural applications in engineering and science arise in the context of nanoscale transport involving elastic, phononic, or electronic waves. In p…
We report a tunable spin mixing conductance, up to $\pm 22\%$, in a Y${}_{3}$Fe${}_{5}$O${}_{12}$/Platinum (YIG/Pt) bilayer. This control is achieved by applying a gate voltage with an ionic gate technique, which exhibits a gate-dependent ferromagnetic resonance line width. Furthermore, we observed a gate-dependent spin pumping and spin Hall angle in the Pt layer, which is also tunable up to $\pm$ 13.6\%. This work experimentally demonstrates spin current control through spin pumping and a gate voltage in a YIG/Pt bilayer, demonstrating the crucial role of the interfacial charge density for the…
We present conductance-matrix measurements of a three-terminal superconductor-semiconductor hybrid device consisting of two normal leads and one superconducting lead. Using a symmetry decomposition of the conductance, we find that the antisymmetric components of pairs of local and nonlocal conductances match at energies below the superconducting gap, consistent with expectations based on a non-interacting scattering matrix approach. Further, the local charge character of Andreev bound states is extracted from the symmetry-decomposed conductance data and is found to be similar at both ends of t…
We discuss, by means of mode-matching analysis for the Dirac equation, how splittings of the Landau-level (LL) degeneracies associated with spin, valley, and layer degrees of freedom affect the ballistic conductance of graphene bilayer. The results show that for wide samples ($W\gg{}L$) the Landauer-Büttiker conductance reaches the maximum $G\simeq{}se^2/(π{h})\times{}W/L$ at the resonance via each LL, with the prefactor varying from $s=8$ if all three degeneracies are preserved, to $s=1$ if all the degeneracies are split. In the absence of bias between the layers, the degeneracies associated …
The conductance through single-layer graphene (SLG) and AA/AB-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) junctions is obtained by taking into account band gap and bias voltage terms. First, we consider gapped SLG, while in between, they are connected into pristine BLG. For Fermi energy larger than the interlayer hopping, the conductance as a function of the bilayer region length $d$ reveals two different models of anti-resonances with the same period. As a function of the band gap, with AA-BLG stacking, the results show that the conductance has the same minima whatever the value of $d$, and for AB-BLG, $d…
We develop a theory of interlayer tunneling in the exciton condensate of bilayer quantum Hall systems, which predicts strongly enhanced, but finite, tunneling conductance peaks near zero bias even at zero temperature. It is emphasized that, though this strongly enhanced tunneling originates from spontaneous interlayer phase coherence, it is fundamentally not the Josephson effect. Because of strong interlayer correlation, the bilayer system behaves as a single system so that conventional tunneling theories treating two layers as independent systems are not applicable. Based on our theory, we co…
We have studied ballistic transport in a 1D channel formed using surface gate techniques on a back-gated, high-mobility, bilayer 2D hole system. At millikelvin temperatures, robust conductance quantization is observed in the quantum wire formed in the top layer of the bilayer system, without the gate instabilities that have hampered previous studies of 1D hole systems. Using source drain bias spectroscopy, we have measured the 1D subband spacings, which are 5-10 times smaller than in comparable GaAs electron systems, but 2-3 times larger than in previous studies of 1D holes. We also report the…
We study the charge and spin transport in two and four terminal graphene nanoribbons (GNR) decorated with random distribution of magnetic adatoms. The inclusion of the magnetic adatoms generates only the $z$-component of the spin polarized conductance via an exchange bias in the absence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI), while in presence of Rashba SOI, one is able to create all the three ($x$, $y$ and $z$) components. This has important consequences for possible spintronic applications. The charge conductance shows interesting behaviour near the zero of the Fermi energy. Where in presenc…
We develop a theory for the anomalous interlayer conductance peaks observed in bilayer electron systems at nu=1. Our model shows the that the size of the peak at zero bias decreases rapidly with increasing in-plane magnetic field, but its location is unchanged. The I-V characteristic is linear at small voltages, in agreement with experimental observations. In addition we make quantitative predictions for how the inter-layer conductance peaks vary in position with in-plane magnetic field at high voltages. Finally, we predict novel bi-stable behavior at intermediate voltages.
Electronic and transport properties of bilayer heterostructure under light irradiation are of fundamental interest to improve functionality of optoelectronic devices. We theoretically study the modification of transport properties of bilayer graphene and bilayer heterostructures under a time-periodic external light field. The bulk electronic and transport properties are studied in a Landauer-type configuration by using the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. To illustrate the behavior of the differential conductance of a bilayer contact under light illumination, we consider tight-bindin…
In this paper, we investigate the non-Markovian quantum transport dynamics of a two-terminal Majorana device that is made of an asymmetric topological superconducting chain coupled to two leads. This asymmetric superconducting chain is analytically solvable and can be realized by a hybrid system of semiconductor nanowire coupled to superconductors or by 1D transverse-field Ising chains. In such asymmetric superconducting chains, by the change of chemical potential, its ground state undergoes a topological quantum phase transition from the topological Majorana bound state to the trivial Andreev…
We report electron transport studies of a thin InAs-Al hybrid semiconductor-superconductor nanowire device using a four-terminal design. Compared to previous works, thinner InAs nanowire (diameter less than 40 nm) is expected to reach fewer sub-band regime. The four-terminal device design excludes electrode contact resistance, an unknown value which has inevitably affected previously reported device conductance. Using tunneling spectroscopy, we find large zero-bias peaks (ZBPs) in differential conductance on the order of $2e^2/h$. Investigating the ZBP evolution by sweeping various gate voltag…
It is shown that for the hopping regime, the thermopowers in both finite two-terminal and three-terminal systems are governed by the edges of the samples. This is due to the fact that the energy transfer between a transport electron and a conducting terminal is determined by the site most strongly coupled to that terminal. One-dimensional systems with both nearest-neighbor and variable-range transport as well as certain types of two-dimensional systems, are considered. For a given sample, the changes in the thermopowers due to modifying the bulk are quite limited, compared with those of the co…
