We calculate the electron-mediated exchange interaction between two domain walls in magnetic wires. This corresponds to the equilibrium regime and, therefore, the interaction can be additionally controlled by an electric current. The exchange interaction is long ranged and oscillates as a function of the distance between the walls. It also depends oscillatory on the polarization angle of the walls, having the maximum value for collinear polarization.
We present spatially- and spectrally-resolved photoluminescence measurements of indirect excitons in high magnetic fields. Long indirect exciton lifetimes give the opportunity to measure magnetoexciton transport by optical imaging. Indirect excitons formed from electrons and holes at zeroth Landau levels (0e - 0h indirect magnetoexcitons) travel over large distances and form a ring emission pattern around the excitation spot. In contrast, the spatial profiles of 1e - 1h and 2e - 2h indirect magnetoexciton emission closely follow the laser excitation profile. The 0e - 0h indirect magnetoexciton…
We study indirect exchange interaction between magnetic impurities in the (001) CdTe/HgTe/CdTe symmetric quantum well. We consider low temperatures and the case of the chemical potential placed in the energy gap of the 2D quasiparticle spectrum. We find that the indirect exchange interaction is suppressed exponentially with the distance between magnetic impurities. The presence of inversion asymmetry results in oscillations of the indirect exchange interaction with the distance and generates additional terms which are non-invariant under rotations in the (001) plane. The indirect exchange inte…
The indirect exchange interaction between magnetic impurities located in the bulk of a two-dimensional topological insulator decays exponentially with the distance. The indirect exchange interaction for magnetic impurities mediated by the helical states at the edge of the topological insulator demonstrates behaviour which is typical for the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction in a one-dimensional metal. We have shown that interference between the bulk and edge states in the two-dimensional topological insulator results in existence of the unusual contribution to the indirect exchange int…
We present a theoretical study of indirect exchange interaction between magnetic adatoms in graphene. The coupling between the adatoms to a graphene sheet is described in the framework of tunneling Hamiltonian. We account for the possibility of this coupling being of resonant character if a bound state of the adatom effectively interacts with the continuum of 2D delocalized states in graphene. In this case the indirect exchange between the adatoms mediated by the 2D carriers appears to be substantially enhanced compared to the results known from Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) theory. Mor…
A simple method to create and control magnetic potentials onto coupled quantum wells is demonstrated for indirect-exciton magnetic confinement. Localized inhomogeneous magnetic potentials with periodically distributed local minima and maxima, known as magnetic lattices, are projected into the plane of the coupled quantum wells and used for the spatially distributed two-dimensional indirect-exciton trapping, in which case localized indirect-excitons are observed. The indirect-exciton trapping mechanism is examined by controlling external magnetic field bias resulting in a shift of the localized…
A novel spin orientation mechanism - dynamic electron spin polarization has been recently suggested in Phys. Rev. Lett. $\mathbf{125}$, 156801 (2020). It takes place for unpolarized optical excitation in weak magnetic fields of the order of a few millitesla. In this paper we demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that the dynamic electron spin polarization degree changes sign as a function of time, strength of the applied magnetic field and its direction. The studies are performed on indirect band-gap (In,Al)As/AlAs quantum dots and their results are explained in the framework of a theor…
In-plane magnetic field is found to change drastically the photoluminescence spectra and kinetics of interwell excitons in GaAs/AlGaAs coupled quantum wells. The effect is due to the in-plane magnetic field induced displacement of the interwell exciton dispersion in a momentum space, which results in the transition from the momentum-space direct exciton ground state to the momentum-space indirect exciton ground state. In-plane magnetic field is, therefore, an effective tool for the exciton dispersion engineering.

$90^\circ$ pinned magnetic domain walls can be observed in thin magnetic layers attached to a ferroelectric substrate. The main stabilization mechanism of the noncollinear magnetic texture is the strain transfer which is responsible for imprinting of the ferroelectic domains into the uniaxial anisotropy of the ferromagnet. Here, we investigate by means of micromagnetic simulations how the interfacial Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction influences the $90^\circ$ domain wall structure. It is shown that Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction induces a large out-of-plane magnetization component, strongly …
We have investigated dynamic behaviors of the magnetic domain wall under perpendicular magnetic field pulses in ferromagnetic nanowires using micromagnetic simulations. It has been found that the perpendicular magnetic field pulse can trigger the magnetic domain wall motion, where all the field torques are kept to be on the plane of nanowire strip. The magnetic domain wall speed faster than several hundreds meters per second is predicted without the Walker breakdown for the perpendicular magnetic driving field stronger than $200~\mathrm{mT}$. Interestingly, the dynamic behavior of the moving m…
We theoretically analyzed a magnetic wall confined in a nano-contact spin valve paying special attention to the penetration of the magnetic wall into thin ferromagnetic electrodes. We showed that, compared with the Bloch wall, the penetration of the Neel wall is suppressed by increases of the demagnetization energy. We found the optimal conditions of the radius and height of the nano-contact to maximize the power of the current-induced oscillation of the magnetic wall. We also found that the thermal stability of the Bloch wall increases when the nano-contact's radius increases or height decrea…
We report on the controllable pinning of domain walls in stripes with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy by magnetostatic coupling to magnetic vortices in disks located above the stripe. Pinning mechanisms and depinning fields are reported. This novel pinning strategy, which can be realized by current nanofabrication techniques, opens up new possibilities for the non-destructive control of domain wall mobility in domain wall based spintronic devices.
The spin transfer torque generated by a spin-polarized current can induce the shift of the magnetic domain-wall position. In this work, we study theoretically the current-induced domain-wall motion by using the collective coordinate approach [Gen Tatara and Hiroshi Kohno, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 86601 (2004)]. The approach is extended to include not only the domain-wall position and the polarization angle changes but also the domain-wall width variation. It is demonstrated that the width variation affects the critical current.
We study the magnetic domain wall structure in magnetic bilayers (two ultrathin ferromagnetic layers separated by a non magnetic spacer) with perpendicular magnetization. Combining magnetic force and ballistic electron emission microscopies, we are able to reveal the details of the magnetic structure of the wall with a high spatial accuracy. In these layers, we show that the classical Bloch wall observed in single layers transforms into superposed Néel walls due to the magnetic coupling between the ferromagnetic layers. Quantitative agreement with micromagnetic calculations is achieved.
Magnetically-doped graphene systems are potential candidates for application in future spintronic devices. A key step is to understand the pairwise interactions between magnetic impurities embedded in graphene that are mediated by the graphene conduction electrons. A large number of studies have been undertaken to investigate the indirect exchange, or RKKY, interactions in graphene. Many of these studies report a decay rate faster than expected for a 2-dimensional material and the absence of the usual distance dependent oscillations. In this review we summarize the techniques used to calculate…
We show here the existence of the indirect coupling of electron and magnetic or nuclear ion spins in self-assembled quantum dots mediated by electron-electron interactions. With a single localized spin placed in the center of the dot, only the spins of electrons occupying the zero angular momentum states couple directly to the localized spin. We show that when the electron-electron interactions are included, the electrons occupying finite angular momentum orbitals interact with the localized spin. This effective interaction is obtained using exact diagonalization of the microscopic Hamiltonian…
From the pioneering work of Winter [Phys. Rev. 124, 452 (1961)], a magnetic domain wall of Bloch type is known to host a special wall-bound spin-wave mode, which corresponds to spin-waves being channeled along the magnetic texture. Using micromagnetic simulations, we investigate spin-waves travelling inside Bloch walls formed in thin magnetic media with perpendicular-to-plane magnetic anisotropy and we show that their propagation is actually strongly nonreciprocal, as a result of dynamic dipolar interactions. We investigate spin-wave non-reciprocity effects in single Bloch walls, which allows …
Magnetic domain walls are objects whose dynamics is inseparably connected to their structure. In this work we investigate magnetic bilayers, which are engineered such that a coupled pair of domain walls, one in each layer, is stabilized by a cooperation of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and flux-closing mechanism. The dipolar field mediating the interaction between the two domain walls, links not only their position but also their structure. We show that this link has a direct impact on their magnetic field induced dynamics. We demonstrate that in such a system the coupling leads to an incr…
We study the effect of non-homogeneous out-of-plane magnetic field on the behaviour of 2D spatially indirect excitons. Due to the difference of magnetic field acting on electrons and holes the total Lorentz force affecting the center of mass motion of an indirect exciton appears. Consequently, an indirect exciton acquires an effective charge proportional to the gradient of the magnetic field. The appearance of the Lorentz force causes the Hall effect for neutral bosons which can be detected by measurement of the spatially inhomogeneous blueshift of the photoluminescence using counter-flow expe…
Magnetic vortex cores exhibit a gyrotropic motion, and may reach a critical velocity, at which point they invert their z-component of the magnetization. We performed micromagnetic simulations to describe this vortex core polarity reversal in magnetic nanodisks presenting a perpendicular anisotropy. We found that the critical velocity decreases with increasing perpendicular anisotropy, therefore departing from a universal criterion, that relates this velocity only to the exchange stiffness of the material. This leads to a critical velocity inversely proportional to the vortex core radius. We ha…
We numerically investigate the electronic properties of magnetic domain walls formed in a Weyl semimetal. Electric charge distribution is computed from the electron wave functions, by numerically diagonalizing the Hamiltonian under several types of domain walls. We find a certain amount of electric charge localized around the domain wall, depending on the texture of the domain wall. This localized charge stems from the degeneracy of Landau states under the axial magnetic field, which corresponds to the curl in the magnetic texture. The localized charge enables one to drive the domain wall moti…
Collective properties of a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) system of spatially indirect magnetoexcitons in coupled quantum wells (CQW) in high magnetic field $H$ were analyzed in the presence of disorder. The Hamiltonian of the dilute gas of magnetoexcitons with dipole-dipole repulsion in a random field has been reduced to the Hamiltonian of a dilute gas of dipolar excitons without an applied magnetic field, but in an $H$-dependent effective random field and having an effective mass of magnetoexciton which is a function of the magnetic field and parameters of the CQW. For 2D magnetoexcitonic system…
Mechanisms of the recently demonstrated ex-situ thermal control of the indirect exchange coupling in magnetic multilayer are discussed for different designs of the spacer layer. Temperature-induced changes in the hysteresis of magnetization are shown to be associated with different types of competing interlayer exchange interactions. Theoretical analysis indicates that the measured step-like shape and hysteresis of the magnetization loops is due to local in-plane magnetic anisotropy of nano-crystallites within the strongly ferromagnetic films. Comparison of the experiment and theory is used to…
Understanding the domain wall dynamics is an important issue in modern magnetism. Here we present results of domain wall displacement in curved cylindrical nanowires at a constant magnetic field. We show that the average velocity of a transverse domain wall increases with curvature. Contrary to what it is observed in stripes, in a curved wire the transverse domain wall oscillates along and rotates around the nanowire with the same frequency. These results open the possibility of new oscillation-based applications.
We microscopically derive transport equations for the conduction electrons in ferromagnetic materials with an inhomogeneous magnetization profile. Our quantum kinetic approach includes elastic scattering and anisotropic spin-flip scattering at magnetic impurities. In the diffusive limit, we calculate the resistance through a domain wall and find that the domain-wall resistance can be positive or negative. In the limit of long domain walls we derive analytical expressions and compare them with existing works, which used less general models or different theoretical frameworks.
The pinning phenomena of the domain wall in the presence of exchange bias is studied analytically. The analytic solution of the domain wall spin configuration is presented. Unlike the traditional solution which is symmetric, our new solution could exhibit the asymmetry of the domain wall spin profile. Using the solution, the domain wall position, its width, its stability, and the depinning field are discussed analytically.
The exciton recombination and spin dynamics in (In,Al)As/AlAs quantum dots (QDs) with indirect band gap and type-I band alignment are studied. The negligible (less than $0.2~μ$eV) value of the anisotropic exchange interaction in these QDs prevents a mixing of the excitonic basis states with pure spin and allows for the formation of spin polarized bright excitons for quasi-resonant circularly polarized excitation. In a longitudinal magnetic field, the recombination and spin dynamics of the excitons are controlled by the hyperfine interaction between the electron and nuclear spins. A QD blockade…
We investigate long-range coherent and dissipative coupling between two spatially separated magnets while both are coupled to a microwave cavity. A careful examination of the system shows that the indirect interaction between two magnon modes is dependent on their individual mechanisms of direct coupling to the cavity. If both magnon modes share the same form of coupling to the cavity (either coherent or dissipative), then the indirect coupling between them will produce level repulsion. Conversely, if the magnon modes have different forms of coupling to the cavity (one coherent and one dissipa…
We demonstrate that the stray magnetic field generated beneath magnetic vortex cores can be used to generate nano-scale, localized pinning sites for magnetic domain walls in an underlying, perpendicularly magnetized nanostrip. Moreover, the pinning strength can be tuned by toggling the vortex core polarity. Indeed, switching the core polarity so that it is aligned with the magnetization of the expanding domain (rather than against it) can be used to reduce the vortex-mediated wall depinning field by between 40% and 90%, depending on the system geometry. Significant reductions in the depinning …
Magnetic domain walls can be moved by spin-polarized currents due to spin-transfer torques. This opens the possibility to use them in spintronic memory devices as, e.g., in racetrack storage. Naturally, in miniaturized devices domain walls can get very close to each other and affect each others dynamics. In this work we consider two separated domain walls in different layers which interact via an interlayer exchange coupling. One of these walls is moved by a spin-polarized current. Depending on several parameters as the current density, the interlayer coupling or the pinning potential, the com…
The magnetization dynamics equation predicts that a domain wall that changes structure should undergo a displacement by itself - automotion - due to the relaxation of the linear momentum that is associated with the wall structure. We experimentally demonstrate this effect in soft nanostrips, transforming under spin transfer torque a metastable asymmetric transverse wall into a vortex wall. Displacements more than three times as large as under spin transfer torque only are measured for 1~ns pulses. The results are explained by analytical and numerical micromagnetics. Their relevance to domain wa…
We present a theory of the current-voltage characteristics of a magnetic domain wall between two highly spin-polarized materials, which takes into account the effect of the electrical bias on the spin-flip probability of an electron crossing the wall. We show that increasing the voltage reduces the spin-flip rate, and is therefore equivalent to reducing the width of the domain wall. As an application, we show that this effect widens the temperature window in which the operation of a unipolar spin diode is nearly ideal.
We consider the spin torque induced by a current flowing ballistically through a magnetic domain wall. In addition to a global pressure in the direction of the electronic flow, the torque has an internal structure of comparable magnitude due to the precession of the electrons' spins at the "Larmor" frequency. As a result, the profile of the domain wall is expected to get distorted by the current and acquires a periodic sur-structure.
Domain wall propagation in modulated-diameter cylindrical nanowires is a key phenomenon to be studied with a view to designing three-dimensional magnetic memory devices. This paper presents a theoretical study of transverse domain wall behavior under the influence of a magnetic field within a cylindrical nanowire with diameter modulations. In particular, domain wall pinning close to the diameter modulation was quantified, both numerically, using finite element micromagnetic simulations, and analytically. Qualitative analytical model for gently sloping modulations resulted in a simple scaling l…
Existing data for soft magnetic materials of critical current for domain-wall motion, wall speed driven by a magnetic field, and wall electrical resistance, show that all three observable properties are related through a single parameter: the wall mobility $μ$. The reciprocal of $μ$ represents the strength of viscous friction between domain wall and conduction-electron gas. And $μ$ is a function of the wall width, which depends in turn on the aspect ratio t/w, where t and w are the thickness and width of the sample. Over four orders of magnitude of $μ$, the data for nanowires show $μ\propto (t…
An antiferromagnetic domain wall in a thermal gradient is found to experience a force towards colder regions upon the application of a uniform magnetic field along the easy axis. This force increases with the strength of the applied field and, for sufficiently high values, it overcomes the entropic force the that pushes wall towards the hotter regions. The force is proportional to the thermal gradient and it shows a linear dependence with the net magnetic moment of the domain wall induced by the field. The origin of this force lies on the increase of the domain wall reflectivity due the field-…
We theoretically study the antiferromagnetic domain wall motion actuated by an inhomogeneous external magnetic field. The Lagrangian and the equations of motion of antiferromagnetic spins under an inhomogeneous magnetic field are derived, first in terms of the Néel vector, and then using collective coordinates of the domain wall. A solution is found that describes the actuation of a domain wall by an inhomogeneous field, in which the motion is initiated by a paramagnetic response of wall magnetization, which is then driven by a Stern-Gerlach like force. The effects of pinning potential are als…
Nanoscale systems of metal atoms antiferromagnetically exchange coupled to several magnetic impurities are shown to exhibit an unconventional re-entrant competition between Kondo screening and indirect magnetic exchange interaction. Depending on the atomic positions of the magnetic moments, the total ground-state spin deviates from predictions of standard Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida perturbation theory. The effect shows up on an energy scale larger than the level width induced by the coupling to the environment and is experimentally verifiable by studying magnetic field dependencies.
We studied the current-induced magnetization dynamics of a domain wall confined in a magnetic wire with bi-axial anisotropy. We showed that above the threshold current density, breathing-mode excitation, where the thickness of the domain wall oscillates, is induced by spin-transfer torque. We found that the breathing-mode can be applied as a source of microwave oscillation because the resistance of the domain wall is a function of the domain wall thickness. In a current sweep simulation, the frequency of the breathing-mode exhibits hysteresis because of the confinement.
We study the transport on the domain wall (DW) in a magnetic topological insulator. The low-energy behaviors of the magnetic topological insulator are dominated by the chiral edge states (CESs). Here, we find that the spectrum and transport of the CESs at the DW are strongly dependent on the DW configuration. For a Bloch wall, two co-propagating CESs at the DW are doubly degenerate and the incoming electron is totally reflected. However, for a Néel wall, the two CESs are split and the transmission is determined by the interference between the CESs. Moreover, the effective Hamiltonian for the C…
Recent magnetoconductance measurements performed on magnetic topological insulator candidates have revealed butterfly-shaped hysteresis. This hysteresis has been attributed to the formation of gapless chiral domain-wall bound states during a magnetic field sweep. We treat this phenomenon theoretically, providing a link between microscopic magnetization dynamics and butterfly hysteresis in magnetoconductance. Further, we illustrate how a spatially resolved conductance measurement can probe the most striking feature of the domain-wall bound states: their chirality. This work establishes a regime…
We show how the axial (chiral) anomaly induces a spin torque on the magnetization in magnetic Weyl semimetals. The anomaly produces an imbalance in left- and right-handed chirality carriers when non-orthogonal electric and magnetic fields are applied. Such imbalance generates a spin density which exerts a torque on the magnetization, the strength of which can be controlled by the intensity of the applied electric field. We show how this results in an electric control of the chirality of domain walls, as well as in an improvement of the domain wall dynamics, by delaying the onset of the Walker …
Domain walls in three-dimensional Weyl semimetals, formed by localized magnetic moments, are investigated. There appear bound states around the domain wall with the discrete spectrum, among which we find "Fermi arc" states with the linear dispersion. The Fermi arc modes contribute to the electric charge and current localized at the domain wall, which reveal a universal behavior depending only on chemical potential and the splitting of the Weyl nodes. This equilibrium current can be traced back to the chiral magnetic effect, or the edge counterpart of the anomalous Hall effect in the bulk. We p…
Magnetic moments strongly coupled to the spins of conduction electrons in a nanostructure can confine the conduction-electron motion due to scattering at almost localized Kondo singlets. We study the resulting local-moment formation in the conduction-electron system and the magnetic exchange coupling mediated by the Kondo singlets. Its distance dependence is oscillatory and induces robust ferro- or antiferromagnetic order in multi-impurity systems.
A top-gated single wall carbon nanotube is used to define three coupled quantum dots in series between two electrodes. The additional electron number on each quantum dot is controlled by top-gate voltages allowing for current measurements of single, double and triple quantum dot stability diagrams. Simulations using a capacitor model including tunnel coupling between neighboring dots captures the observed behavior with good agreement. Furthermore, anti-crossings between indirectly coupled levels and higher order cotunneling are discussed.
We investigated head-to-head domain walls in nanostrips of epitaxial $\mathrm{Fe}_4\mathrm{N}(001)$ thin films, displaying a fourfold magnetic anisotropy. Magnetic force microscopy and micromagnetic simulations show that the domain walls have specific properties, compared to soft magnetic materials. In particular, strips aligned along a hard axis of magnetization are wrapped by partial flux-closure concertina domains below a critical width, while progressively transforming to zigzag walls for wider strips. Transverse walls are favored upon initial application of a magnetic field transverse to …
The seeding of vortex domain walls in V-shaped nanowires by a magnetic field has been investigated via simulations and Scanning Electron Microscopy with Polarization Analysis (SEMPA). It is found that the orientation of the magnetic field can be used to purposely tune the chirality, polarity and position of single vortex domain walls in soft magnetic nanowires.
Magnetic domain walls are pinned strongly by abrupt changes in magnetic anisotropy. When driven into oscillation by a spin-polarized current, locally pinned domain walls can be exploited as tunable sources of short-wavelength spin waves. Here, we develop an analytical framework and discrete Heisenberg model to describe the static and dynamic properties of pinned domain walls with a head-to-tail magnetic structure. We focus on magnetic domain walls that are pinned by 90$^\circ$ rotations of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. Our model captures the domain wall response to a spin-transfer torque that …
The structure and properties of a geometrically constrained magnetic wall in a constriction separating two wider regions are investigated theoretically. They are shown to differconsiderably from those of an unconstrained wall, so that the geometrically constrained magnetic wall truly constitutes a new kind of magnetic wall, besides the well known Bloch and Neel walls. In particular, the width of a constrained wall cann become very small if the characteristic length of the constriction is small, as is actually the case in an atomic point contact. This provides a simple, natural explanation for …
Magnetic moments in atomic scale domain walls formed in nanoconstrictions and nanowires are softened which affects dramatically the domain wall resistance. We perform ab initio calculations of the electronic structure and conductance of atomic-size Ni nanowires with domain walls only a few atomic lattice constants wide. We show that the hybridization between noncollinear spin states leads to a reduction of the magnetic moments in the domain wall. This magnetic moment softening strongly enhances the domain wall resistance due to scattering produced by the local perturbation of the electronic po…
The indirect Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) coupling between on-site magnetic impurities is studied for two kinds of graphene nanoflakes consisting of approximately 100 carbon atoms, posessing either zigzag or armchair edge. The tight-binding Hamiltonian with Hubbard term is used in non-perturbative calculations of coupling between the impurities placed at the edge of the structure. In general, for zigzag-edged nanoflakes a pronounced coupling robust against charge doping is found, while for armchair-edged structures the interaction is weaker and much more sensitive to charge doping. Als…
We study theoretically the current-induced magnetic domain wall motion in a metallic nanowire with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The anisotropy can reduce the critical current density of the domain wall motion. We explain the reduction mechanism and identify the maximal reduction conditions. This result facilitates both fundamental studies and device applications of the current- induced domain wall motion.
We use quantum Monte Carlo method to study the indirect coupling between two magnetic impurities on the zigzag edge of graphene ribbon, with respect to the chemical potential $μ$. We find that the spin-spin correlation between two adatoms located on the nearest sites in the zigzag edge are drastically suppressed around the zero-energy. As we switch the system away from half-filling, the antiferromagnetic correlation is first enhanced and then decreased. If the two adatoms are adsorbed on the sites belonging to the same sublattice, we find similar behavior of spin-spin correlation except for a …
Motivated by recent experiments, here we study the indirect interactions between magnetic impurities deposited on top of a clean Pb(110) surface induced by the underlying conduction electrons. Our approach makes use of \textit{ab initio} calculations to characterize the clean Pb(110) surface and avoids self-consistency, a feature that greatly reduces the computational cost. In combination with 2$^{\text{nd}}$ order perturbation theory in the microscopic \textit{s-d} exchange parameter $J_{K}$ between a magnetic adatom and the conduction electrons, we are able to systematically derive the Ruder…
The magnetic ground-state properties of the periodic Anderson model with a regular depletion of the correlated sites are analyzed within different theoretical approaches. We consider the model on the one-dimensional chain and on the two-dimensional square lattice with hopping between nearest neighbors. At half-filling and with correlated impurities present at every second site, the depleted Anderson lattice is the most simple system where the indirect magnetic coupling mediated by the conduction electrons is ferromagnetic. We discuss the underlying electronic structure and the possible mechani…
We investigate theoretically indirect exchange interaction between magnetic impurities mediated by one-dimensional gapped helical states. Such states, containing massive Dirac fermions, may be realized on the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator when time-reversal symmetry is weakly broken. We find that the indirect exchange interaction consists of Heisenberg, Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya, in-plane and out-of-plane Ising terms. These terms decay exponentially when Fermi level lies inside the bandgap whereas the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya term has smallest amplitude. Outside the energy gap the mas…
