Motivated by recent experiments, here we study the indirect interactions between magnetic impurities deposited on top of a clean Pb(110) surface induced by the underlying conduction electrons. Our approach makes use of \textit{ab initio} calculations to characterize the clean Pb(110) surface and avoids self-consistency, a feature that greatly reduces the computational cost. In combination with 2$^{\text{nd}}$ order perturbation theory in the microscopic \textit{s-d} exchange parameter $J_{K}$ between a magnetic adatom and the conduction electrons, we are able to systematically derive the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY), the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) and the anisotropic tensor interactions emerging at the Pb(110) surface between magnetic impurities. The only adjustable parameter is $J_{K}$, which is fitted to reproduce the experiments. Our results show important anisotropy effects arising both from the rectangular geometry of the (110) unit cell, and from the strong Rashba spin-orbit interaction due to the broken inversion symmetry at the Pb(110) surface. In addition to Pb(110), the characterization of the indirect spin interactions described here could be extended to other realistic metallic surfaces for weakly-coupled impurities, and would enable to fabricate atomic-size nanostructures with engineered interactions and on-demand magnetic properties, anticipating useful applications in nanotechnology.
We study indirect exchange interaction between magnetic impurities in the (001) CdTe/HgTe/CdTe symmetric quantum well. We consider low temperatures and the case of the chemical potential placed in the energy gap of the 2D quasiparticle spectrum. We find that the indirect exchange interaction is suppressed exponentially with the distance between magnetic impurities. The presence of inversion asymmetry results in oscillations of the indirect exchange interaction with the distance and generates additional terms which are non-invariant under rotations in the (001) plane. The indirect exchange inte…
The indirect exchange interaction between magnetic impurities located in the bulk of a two-dimensional topological insulator decays exponentially with the distance. The indirect exchange interaction for magnetic impurities mediated by the helical states at the edge of the topological insulator demonstrates behaviour which is typical for the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction in a one-dimensional metal. We have shown that interference between the bulk and edge states in the two-dimensional topological insulator results in existence of the unusual contribution to the indirect exchange int…
We use quantum Monte Carlo method to study the indirect coupling between two magnetic impurities on the zigzag edge of graphene ribbon, with respect to the chemical potential $μ$. We find that the spin-spin correlation between two adatoms located on the nearest sites in the zigzag edge are drastically suppressed around the zero-energy. As we switch the system away from half-filling, the antiferromagnetic correlation is first enhanced and then decreased. If the two adatoms are adsorbed on the sites belonging to the same sublattice, we find similar behavior of spin-spin correlation except for a …
A dilute distribution of magnetic impurities is assumed to be present in doped graphene. We calculate the interaction energy between two magnetic impurities which are coupled via the indirect-exchange or Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuva-Yosida (RKKY) interaction by the doped conduction electrons. The current model is a half-filled $AB$-lattice structure. Our calculations are based on the retarded lattice Green's function formalism in momentum-energy space which is employed in linear response theory to determine the magnetic susceptibility in coordinate space. Analytic results are obtained for gapped gra…
We performed density functional theory calculations on heterostructures of single layers of hexagonal BN and MoS$_2$ to assess the effect of doping in the BN sheet and of interstitial Na atoms on the electronic properties of the adjacent MoS$_2$ layer. Our calculations predict that $n$-doping of the boron nitride subsystem by oxygen, carbon and sulfur impurities causes noticeable charge transfer into the conduction band of the MoS$_2$ sheet, while $p$-doping by beryllium and carbon leaves the molybdenum disulphide layer largely unaffected. Intercalated sodium atoms lead to a significant increa…
We theoretically investigate the impurity levels and exchange interaction between magnetic impurities in graphene driven by an off-resonant circularly polarized light field. Our analysis captures the non-perturbative effects resulting from scattering with magnetic impurities with a strong onsite potential. Under irradiation, a dynamical band gap opens up at the Dirac point, allowing impurity levels to exist inside the gap. These impurity levels are shown to give rise to a resonance feature in the exchange energy for impurities located either at the same or different sublattices. The exchange i…
We investigate theoretically indirect exchange interaction between magnetic impurities mediated by one-dimensional gapped helical states. Such states, containing massive Dirac fermions, may be realized on the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator when time-reversal symmetry is weakly broken. We find that the indirect exchange interaction consists of Heisenberg, Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya, in-plane and out-of-plane Ising terms. These terms decay exponentially when Fermi level lies inside the bandgap whereas the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya term has smallest amplitude. Outside the energy gap the mas…
The magnetic ground-state properties of the periodic Anderson model with a regular depletion of the correlated sites are analyzed within different theoretical approaches. We consider the model on the one-dimensional chain and on the two-dimensional square lattice with hopping between nearest neighbors. At half-filling and with correlated impurities present at every second site, the depleted Anderson lattice is the most simple system where the indirect magnetic coupling mediated by the conduction electrons is ferromagnetic. We discuss the underlying electronic structure and the possible mechani…
The indirect Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) coupling between on-site magnetic impurities is studied for two kinds of graphene nanoflakes consisting of approximately 100 carbon atoms, posessing either zigzag or armchair edge. The tight-binding Hamiltonian with Hubbard term is used in non-perturbative calculations of coupling between the impurities placed at the edge of the structure. In general, for zigzag-edged nanoflakes a pronounced coupling robust against charge doping is found, while for armchair-edged structures the interaction is weaker and much more sensitive to charge doping. Als…
By an accurate Green's function method we calculate conductances and the corresponding Giant Magneto-Resistance effects (GMR) of two metallic ferromagnetic films separated by different spacers, metallic and non-metallic ones, in a simplified model on a sc lattice, in CPP and CIP geometries (i.e. current perpendicular or parallel to the planes), without impurities, or with interface- or bulk impurities. The electronic structure of the systems is approximated by two hybridized orbitals per atom, to mimic s-bands and d-bands and their hybridization. We show that such calculations usually give rou…
We present first-principles calculations of quantum transport which show that the resistance of metallic carbon nanotubes can be changed dramatically with homogeneous transverse electric fields if the nanotubes have impurities or defects. The change of the resistance is predicted to range over more than two orders of magnitude with experimentally attainable electric fields. This novel property has its origin that backscattering of conduction electrons by impurities or defects in the nanotubes is strongly dependent on the strength and/or direction of the applied electric fields. We expect this …
The variety of excitonic states in tungsten-based dichalcogenide monolayers stems from unique interplay between the spin and valley degrees of freedom. One of the exciton species is the indirect exciton (momentum or valley dark), which is responsible to a series of resonances when the monolayer is charge neutral. We investigate the short-range electron-hole exchange interaction of the indirect exciton, as well as its recombination mechanism mediated by impurities. The analysis provides thorough understanding of the energy and polarization of the zero-phonon indirect exciton resonance in the em…
Tuning of the electronic properties of pre-synthesized colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) by doping plays a key role in the prospect of implementing them in printed electronics devices such as transistors, and photodetectors. While such impurity doping reactions have already been introduced, the understanding of the doping process, the nature of interaction between the impurity and host atoms, and the conditions affecting the solubility limit of impurities in nanocrystals are still unclear. Here, we used a post-synthesis diffusion based doping reaction to introduce Ag impurities into I…
The performance of a quantum computation system is investigated, with qubits represented by magnetic impurities in coupled quantum dots filled with two electrons. Magnetic impurities are electrically manipulated by electrons. The dominant noise source is the electron mediated indirect coupling between magnetic impurities and host spin bath. As a result of the electron mediated coupling, both noise properties and the time needed for elementary gate operations, depend on controllable system parameters, such as size and geometry of the quantum dot, and external electric and magnetic fields. We fi…
We study indirect exchange interactions between localized spins of magnetic impurities in spin-valley coupled systems described with the Kane-Mele model. Our model captures the main ingredients of the energy bands of 1H transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) monolayers, such as 1H-MoS$_2$ and 1H-NbSe$_2$. To obtain the effective interactions, we use the exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian, avoiding momentum cut-offs. We start by comparing the standard perturbation expansion in terms of the Kondo exchange with the exact calculation of the interaction, treating the local spins classically.…
We study a generic topological Kondo insulator system by performing a mean-field theoretic calculation within the frame-work of slave-boson protocol. We assume infinite Hubbard-type interaction among the localized electrons. The difference between the bulk metallic and insulating phases of the insulator is in the sign of nearest neighbor hopping of localized electrons. The hopping amplitude is positive for the metallic and negative for the insulating phase. The surface metallicity together with bulk insulation, however, requires very strong f electron localization. Furthermore, we find that th…
In this paper, the form of the indirect interaction between local impurities in flakes and in graphene ring is analytically investigated. We calculate this characteristic in the framework of the tight-binding model for a finite nanocarbon system with periodic boundary conditions. A pronounced dependence of the bond value on the impurity position inside the graphene sample is found, which is due to quantum size effects. The influence of the flake size on the value of the indirect interaction constant is also studied.
Magnetically-doped graphene systems are potential candidates for application in future spintronic devices. A key step is to understand the pairwise interactions between magnetic impurities embedded in graphene that are mediated by the graphene conduction electrons. A large number of studies have been undertaken to investigate the indirect exchange, or RKKY, interactions in graphene. Many of these studies report a decay rate faster than expected for a 2-dimensional material and the absence of the usual distance dependent oscillations. In this review we summarize the techniques used to calculate…
We study the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction between two magnetic impurities connected to the edges of zigzag-terminated MoS$_{2}$ flakes. When the impurities lie on the edges of the flake, the effective exchange interaction exhibits sizable noncollinear Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya character that competes with a strong Ising coupling. We analyze the characteristic decay exponent for doping levels inside the band gap of the infinite layer, corresponding to edge states of the flake at the Fermi level. The characteristic exponents show sub-two-dimensional (sub-2D) behavior for these band fill…
We study the Ruderman-Kittle-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction in a monolayer MoS$_2$. We show that the rotation of the itinerant electron spin due to the spin-orbit coupling causes a twisted interaction between two magnetic adatoms which consists of different RKKY coupling terms, the Heisenberg, Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya and Ising interactions. We find that the interaction terms are very sensitive to the Fermi energy values and change dramatically from doped to undoped systems. A finite doping causes that all parts of the interaction oscillate with the distance of two magnetic impurities, $R$ and t…
We study the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction between magnetic impurities embedded in $p$-doped transition metal dichalcogenide triangular flakes. The role of underlying symmetries is exposed by analyzing the interaction as a function of impurity separation along zigzag and armchair trajectories, in specific parts of the sample. The large spin-orbit coupling in these materials produces strongly anisotropic interactions, including a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya component that can be sizable and tunable. We consider impurities hybridized to different orbitals of the host transition-metal and i…
We consider transport of dilute two-dimensional electrons, with temperature between Fermi and Debye temperatures. In this regime, electrons form a nondegenerate plasma with mobility limited by potential disorder. Different kinds of impurities contribute unique signatures to the resulting temperature-dependent Drude conductivity, via energy-dependent scattering. This opens up a way to characterize sample disorder composition. In particular, neutral impurities cause a slow decrease in conductivity with temperature, whereas charged impurities result in conductivity growing as a square root of tem…
By introducing a normal self-energy to incorporate the effects of magnetic impurities, Kondo effects in single-walled metallic carbon nanotubes are investigated within the Anderson model and Landauer formula. Magnetic impurities induce Kondo resonance and bring a valley of conductance unction near the Fermi level. The conductance of the nanotube increases with the temperature in the low temperature range. Thermoelectric power induced by magnetic impurities is gotten from Mott relation, and the calculations indicate its dependence on the temperature could interpret the experiment well.
We predict spin Hall angles up to 80% for ultrathin noble metal films with substitutional Bi impurities. The colossal spin Hall effect is caused by enhancement of the spin Hall conductivity in reduced sample dimension and a strong reduction of the charge conductivity by resonant impurity scattering. These findings can be exploited to create materials with high efficiency of charge to spin current conversion by strain engineering.
We calculate the temperature dependent long-range magnetic coupling in the presence of dilute concentrations of random magnetic impurities in chiral multilayer two-dimensional semimetals, i.e., undoped intrinsic multilayer graphene. Assuming a carrier-mediated indirect RKKY exchange interaction among the well-separated magnetic impurities with the itinerant carriers mediating the magnetic interaction between the impurities, we investigate the magnetic properties of intrinsic multilayer graphene using an effective chiral Hamiltonian model. We find that due to the enhanced density of states in t…
A form of an indirect Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY)-like coupling between magnetic on-site impurities in armchair graphene nanoribbons is studied theoretically. The calculations are based on a tight-binding model for a finite nanoribbon system with periodic boundary conditions. A pronounced Friedel-oscillation-like dependence of the coupling magnitude on the impurity position within the nanoribbon resulting from quantum size effects is found and investigated. In particular, the distance dependence of coupling is analysed. For semiconducting nanoribbons, this dependence is exponential-li…
Nanoscale systems of metal atoms antiferromagnetically exchange coupled to several magnetic impurities are shown to exhibit an unconventional re-entrant competition between Kondo screening and indirect magnetic exchange interaction. Depending on the atomic positions of the magnetic moments, the total ground-state spin deviates from predictions of standard Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida perturbation theory. The effect shows up on an energy scale larger than the level width induced by the coupling to the environment and is experimentally verifiable by studying magnetic field dependencies.
Indirect exchange interaction between magnetic impurities in one dimensional systems is a matter of long discussions since Kittel has established that in the asymptotic limit it decays as the inverse of distance x between the impurities. In this work we investigate this problem in a quantum wire with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC). By employing a second order perturbation theory we find that one additional oscillatory term appears in each of the RKKY, the Dzaloshinkii-Moryia and the Ising couplings. Remarkably, these extra terms resulting from the spin precession of the conduction electrons …
We review recent experimental progress on the saturation problem in metallic quantum wires. In particular, we address the influence of magnetic impurities on the electron phase coherence time. We also present new measurements of the phase coherence time in ultra-clean gold and silver wires and analyse the saturation of \tauphi in these samples, cognizant of the role of magnetic scattering. For the cleanest samples, Kondo temperatures below 1 mK and extremely-small magnetic-impurity concentration levels of less than 0.08 ppm have to be assumed to attribute the observed saturation to the presenc…
We perform explicit time-dependent classical and quantum propagation of a spatially indirect exciton (SIX) driven by surface acoustic waves (SAWs) in a semiconductor heterostructure device. We model the SIX dynamics at different levels of description, from the Euler-Lagrange propagation of structureless classical particles to unitary Schrödinger propagation of an electron-hole wave packet in a mean field and to the full quantum propagation of the two-particle complex. A recently proposed beyond mean-field self-energy approach, adding internal virtual transitions to the c.m. dynamics, has been …
It is generally believed that superconductivity only weakly affects the indirect exchange between magnetic impurities. If the distance r between impurities is smaller than than the superconducting coherence length (r < ξ), this exchange is thought to be dominated by RKKY interactions, identical to the those in a normal metallic host. This perception is based upon a perturbative treatment of the exchange interaction. Here, we provide a non-perturbative analysis and demonstrate that the presence of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov bound states induces a strong 1/r^2 anti-ferromagnetic interaction that can domin…
We have probed the magnetic field dependence of the electron phase coherence time $τ_ϕ$ by measuring the Aharonov-Bohm conductance oscillations of mesoscopic Cu rings. Whereas $τ_ϕ$ determined from the low-field magnetoresistance saturates below 1 K, the amplitude of Aharonov-Bohm $h/e$ oscillations increases strongly on a magnetic field scale proportional to the temperature. This provides strong evidence that a likely explanation for the frequently observed saturation of $τ_ϕ$ at low temperature in weakly disordered metallic thin films is the presence of extremely dilute magnetic impurities.
The indirect, charge-carrier mediated coupling between localized magnetic moments is studied for graphene nanoflakes of triangular shape and zig-zag edge. The characteristic feature of such nanoflakes is the presence of a shell of zero-energy states in the electronic spectrum. The tight-binding Hamiltonian supplemented with a Hubbard term is used for electronic structure calculations. The indirect RKKY (Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida) coupling energy is derived from the total electronic energy of the system in a non-perturbative way. The attention is focused on the on-site and plaquette impurit…
Scattering by magnetic impurities is known to destroy coherence of electron motion in metals and semiconductors. We investigate the decoherence introduced in a single act of electron scattering by a magnetic impurity in a quantum Hall system. To this end we introduce a fictitious nonunitary scattering matrix $\mathcal{S}$ for electrons that reproduces the exactly calculated scattering probabilities. The strength of decoherence is identified by the deviation of eigenvalues of the product $\mathcal{S}\mathcal{S}^{\dagger}$ from unity. Using the fictitious scattering matrix, we estimate the width…
The phases and excitation spectrum of an easy-axis ferromagnetic chain of S=1/2 magnetic impurities built on the top of a clean metallic surface are studied. As a function of the (Kondo) coupling to the metallic surface and at low temperatures, the spin chain exhibits a quantum phase transition from an Ising ferromagnetic phase with long-range order to a paramagnetic phase where quantum fluctuations destroy the magnetic order. In the paramagnetic phase, the system consists of a chain of Kondo-singlets where the impurities are completely screened by the metallic host. In the ferromagnetic phase…
In this work, the tridiagonal method is used to distinguish between edges modes and area modes to study the edge sites properties effect on edge localized states of semi-infinite zigzag 2D honeycomb graphene sheet. The results show a realistic behavior for the dependance of edge localized states of zigzag graphene on the edge sites properties which explaining the experimental results of measured local density of states at the edge of graphene, while at the same time removing the inconsistence between the semiconductor behavior found in the experimental data for fabricated GNRs and the expected…
Recently, abundant transport phenomena characterizing the surface states of Weyl semimetals (WSMs) have been reported. To generate these phenomena, electrons have to complete a closed intersurface orbit. Due to the unavoidable impurities in real materials, this orbit would be destroyed by the impurity scattering, which limits the detection of the surface states in WSMs. Here, we investigate the RKKY interaction between magnetic impurities, solely mediated by a single surface band, in semi-infinite WSMs. It is found that peculiar oscillations and slowly decaying laws of the RKKY interaction can…
We present results of tight-binding spin-dynamics simulations of individual and pairs of substitutional Mn impurities in GaAs. Our approach is based on the mixed quantum-classical scheme for spin dynamics, with coupled equations of motions for the quantum subsystem, representing the host, and the localized spins of magnetic dopants, which are treated classically. In the case of a single Mn impurity, we calculate explicitly the time evolution of the Mn spin and the spins of nearest-neighbors As atoms, where the acceptor (hole) state introduced by the Mn dopant resides. We relate the characteris…
We have considered the effects of non magnetic impurities and interface roughness on the interlayer coupling between magnetic layers in metallic multilayers. The two types of defects alter the interlayer coupling in quite different ways. Elastic electron scattering by impurities in the non magnetic spacer layers between magnetic layers produces an exponential decay of the coupling with a characteristic decay length that is considerably longer than the ``global'' transport mean free path for the spacer layer with its surrounding interfaces. Interfacial roughness leads to an attenuation of the c…
We have investigated the electronic and magnetic response of a single Fe atom and a pair of interacting Fe atoms placed in patterned dehydrogenated channels in graphane within the framework of density functional theory. We have considered two channels: "armchair" and "zigzag" channels. Fully relaxed calculations have been carried out for three different channel widths. Our calculations reveal that the response to the magnetic impurities is very different for these two channels. We have also shown that one can stabilize magnetic impurities (Fe in the present case) along the channels of bare car…
We discuss the effect of magnetic impurities on the inelastic scattering and dephasing of electrons. Magnetic impurities mediate the energy exchange between electrons. This mechanism is especially effective at small energy transfers $E$ in the absence of Zeeman splitting, when the two-particle collision integral in the electron kinetic equation has a kernel $K\propto 1/E^2$ in a broad energy range. In a magnetic field, this mechanism is suppressed at $E$ below the Zeeman energy. Simultaneously, the Zeeman splitting of the impurity spin states reduces the electron dephasing rate, thus enhancing…
We show that confinement of bulk electrons can be observed at low-dimensional surface structures and can serve as a long-range sensor for the magnetism and electronic properties of single impurities or as a quantum information transfer channel with large coherence lengths. Our ab initio calculations reveal oscillations of electron density in magnetic chains on metallic surfaces and help to unambiguously identify the electrons involved as bulk electrons. We furthermore discuss the possibility of utilizing bulk state confinement to transfer quantum information, encoded in an atom's species or sp…
Spin relaxation torque ${\cal T}$ in uniform metallic ferromagnets with the spin-orbit interaction arising from random impurities is calculated microscopically. ${\cal T}$ is shown to be written by spatial derivatives of the electric field, but is not always given as a divergence of a torque dipole density. The result is due to the fast dissipation of the orbital angular momentum, and thus a conserving spin current cannot be defined. It is discussed that the $β$ term in the spin transfer torque can also be asymmetric.
We present a non-perturbative calculation of indirect exchange interaction between two paramagnetic impurities via 2D free carriers gas separated by a tunnel barrier. The new method accounts for the impurity attractive potential producing a bound state. The calculations show that for if the bound impurity state energy lies within the energy range occupied by the free 2D carriers the indirect exchange interaction is strongly enhanced due to resonant tunneling and exceeds by a few orders of magnitude what one would expect from the conventional RKKY approach.
The effect of magnetic impurities on the ballistic conductance of nanocontacts is, as suggested in recent work, amenable to ab initio study \cite{naturemat}. Our method proceeds via a conventional density functional calculation of spin and symmetry dependent electron scattering phase shifts, followed by the subsequent numerical renormalization group solution of Anderson models -- whose ingredients and parameters are chosen so as to reproduce these phase shifts. We apply this method to investigate the Kondo zero bias anomalies that would be caused in the ballistic conductance of perfect metalli…
The lifetime of electrons on edge states of a two-dimensional topological insulator against the background of an allowed two-dimensional band has been determined. It has been shown that this time in the case of scattering on Coulomb impurities can be significantly larger than the mean free time of two-dimensional electrons. As a result, the conductivity of the metallic two-dimensional topological insulator strip can be determined primarily by edge states.
We investigate bilayer graphene transport in the presence of electron-hole puddles induced by long-range charged impurities in the environment. We explain the insulating behavior observed in the temperature dependent conductivity of low mobility bilayer graphene using an analytic statistical theory taking into account the non-mean-field nature of transport in the highly inhomogeneous density and potential landscape. We find that the puddles can induce, even far from the charge neutrality point, a coexisting metallic and insulating transport behavior due to the random local activation gap in th…
We study the spin-resolved spectral properties of the impurity states associated to the presence of magnetic impurities in two-dimensional, as well as one-dimensional systems with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We focus on Shiba bound states in superconducting materials, as well as on impurity states in metallic systems. Using a combination of a numerical T-matrix approximation and a direct analytical calculation of the bound state wave function, we compute the local density of states (LDOS) together with its Fourier transform (FT). We find that the FT of the spin-polarized LDOS, a quantity acces…
We study inelastic electron-electron scattering mediated by the exchange interaction of electrons with magnetic impurities, and find the kernel of the corresponding two-particle collision integral. In a wide region of parameters, the kernel K is proportional to the inverse square of the transferred energy, $K\propto J^4/E^2$. The exchange constant J is renormalized due to the Kondo effect, yielding an additional weak dependence of K on the energies of the colliding electrons. At small energy transfers, the $1/E^2$ divergence is cut off; the cut-off energy is determined by the dynamics of the i…
Of fundamental interest in the field of spintronics is the mechanism of indirect exchange coupling between magnetic impurities embedded in metallic hosts. A range of physical features, such as magnetotransport and overall magnetic moment formation, are predicated upon this magnetic coupling, often referred to as the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction. Recent theoretical studies on the RKKY in graphene have been motivated by possible spintronic applications of magnetically doped graphene systems. In this work a combination of analytic and numerical techniques are used to examine t…
We propose a method to probe and control the interactions between an ensemble of magnetic impurities in a superconductor via microwave radiation. Our method relies upon the presence of sub-gap Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states associated with the impurities. Depending on the sign of the detuning, radiation generates either a ferro- or antiferromagnetic contribution to the exchange interaction. This contribution can bias the statistics of the random exchange constants stemming from the RKKY interaction. Moreover, by measuring the microwave response at the YSR resonance, one gains information about …
Quantum corrals are two dimensional structures built atom by atom on an atomically clean metallic surface using a scanning tunneling microscope. These two dimensional structures ``corral'' electrons in the surface states of noble metals which lead to standing wave patterns in the electron density inside the quantum corral. We review the physics of quantum corrals and relate the signal of the scanning tunneling microscope to the scattering properties of substrate electrons from atomic impurities supported on the surface. The theory includes the effects of incoherent surface state electron scatt…
A new concept realizing giant spin Nernst effect in nonmagnetic metallic films is introduced. It is based on the idea of engineering an asymmetric energy dependence of the longitudinal and transverse electrical conductivities, as well as a pronounced energy dependence of the spin Hall angle in the vicinity of the Fermi level by the resonant impurity states at the Fermi level. We employ an analytical model and demonstrate the emergence of a giant spin Nernst effect in Ag(111) films using {\it ab-initio} calculations combined with the Boltzmann approach for transport properties arising from skew…
We theoretically investigate the temperature-dependent static susceptibility and long-range magnetic coupling of three-dimensional (3D) chiral gapless electron-hole systems (semimetals) with arbitrary band dispersion [i.e., $\varepsilon(k) \sim k^N$, where $k$ is the wave vector and $N$ is a positive integer]. We study the magnetic properties of these systems in the presence of dilute random magnetic impurities. Assuming carrier-mediated Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida indirect exchange interaction, we find that the magnetic ordering of intrinsic 3D chiral semimetals in the presence of dilute ma…
