The formation and evolution of tidal tails like those observed around some globular clusters and dwarf satellite galaxies is examined with an N-body simulation. In particular, we analyse in detail the evolving tidal features of a one-component satellite that is moving on a highly eccentric orbit in the external field of a host galaxy potential like our own. The results show that every time the satellite approaches apogalacticon, a fresh pair of tidal tails becomes notably prominent, and that eventually, the satellite possesses multiple tidal tails via repeating apocentre passages. Accordingly, the number of observed tidal arms can be used as a tracer of the number of orbital periods that such a system has completed around the centre of its host galaxy. By identifying the arm particles included in each of the first three consecutively formed pairs of tidal tails, we find that each pair of tidal tails is practically identical to one another regarding the energy and angular-momentum distributions. In addition, we demonstrate that the density profiles of these three pairs of tidal tails at their first apogalacticons after formation agree well with one another. It therefore follows that the multiplicity in tidal features originates from the repeated episode of tidal-arm formation in the course of the precessing motion of a satellite.
We report on the search for overall kinematical or structural conditions that have allowed some Milky Way globular clusters to presently develop tidal tails. For this purpose, we build a comprehensive catalogue of globular clusters with studies focused on their outermost regions and classified them in three categories: those with observed tidal tails, those with extra-tidal features different from tidal tails and those without any signature of extended stellar density profiles. When exploring different kinematical and structural parameter spaces, we found that globular clusters - irrespective …
Globular clusters are prone to lose stars while moving around the Milky Way. These stars escape the clusters and are distributed throughout extended envelopes or tidal tails. However, such extra-tidal structures are not observed in all globular clusters, and yet there is no structural or dynamical parameters that can predict their presence or absence. NGC\,6864 is an outer halo globular cluster with reported no observed tidal tails. We used Dark Energy Camera (DECam) photometry reaching $\sim$ 4 mag underneath its main sequence turnoff to confidently detect an extra-tidal envelope, and stellar…
We used extra-tidal RR Lyrae stars to study the dynamics of Galactic globular clusters and know how effects like dynamical friction and tidal disruption affect these clusters. The Gaia DR2 catalog for RR Lyrae stars (Clementini et al. 2018) is used along with the proper motions and tidal radii data for the globular clusters compiled from literature. A sample of 56 Galactic globular clusters is analyzed. Out of these 56 Galactic globular clusters, only 11 have extra-tidal RR Lyrae stars. However, only two clusters, namely, NGC 3201 and NGC 5024, have enough extra-tidal RR Lyrae stars to draw in…
We study the outer regions of the Milky Way globular cluster NGC6809 based on Dark Energy Camera (DECam) observations, which reach nearly 6 mag below the cluster main sequence (MS) turnoff. In order to unveil its fainter outermost structure, we built stellar density maps using cluster MS stars, once the contamination of field stars was removed from the cluster color-magnitude diagram. We found that only the resulting stellar density map for the lightest stars exhibits some excesses of stars at opposite sides from the cluster centre that diminish soon thereafter at ~ 0.32 deg. Studied globular …
The globular clusters of large spiral galaxies can be divided into two populations: one which formed in-situ and one which comprises clusters tidally stripped away from other galaxies. In this paper we investigate the contribution to the outer globular cluster population in the M31 galaxy through donation of clusters from dwarf galaxies. We test this numerically by comparing the contribution of globular clusters from simulated encounters to the observed M31 globular cluster population. To constrain our simulations, we specifically investigate the outermost globular cluster in the M31 system, M…
The Gaia mission promises to deliver precision astrometry at an unprecedented level, heralding a new era for discerning the kinematic and spatial coordinates of stars in our Galaxy. Here, we present a new technique for estimating the age of tidally disrupted globular cluster streams using the proper motions and parallaxes of tracer stars. We evolve the collisional dynamics of globular clusters within the evolving potential of a Milky Way-like halo extracted from a cosmological $Λ$CDM simulation and analyze the resultant streams as they would be observed by Gaia. The simulations sample a variet…
A method to search for tidal streams and to fit their orbits based on maximum likelihood is presented and applied to the Gaia data. Tests of the method are performed showing how a simulated stream produced by tidal stripping of a star cluster is recovered when added to a simulation of the Gaia catalogue. The method can be applied to search for streams associated with known progenitors or to do blind searches in a general catalogue. As the first example, we apply the method to the globular cluster M68 and detect its clear tidal stream stretching over the whole North Galactic hemisphere, and pas…
Massive globular clusters lose stars via internal and external processes. Internal processes include mainly two-body relaxation, while external processes include interactions with the Galactic tidal field. We perform a suite of N-body simulations of such massive clusters using three different direct-summation N-body codes, exploring different Galactic orbits and particle numbers. By inspecting the rate at which a star's energy changes as it becomes energetically unbound from the cluster, we can neatly identify two populations we call kicks and sweeps, that escape through two-body encounters in…
We search for extra-tidal stars around two metal-poor Galactic globular clusters, M53 and NGC 5053, using the near-infrared APOGEE spectra. Applying the t-SNE algorithm on the chemical abundances and radial velocities results in identification of two isolated stellar groups composed of cluster member stars in the t-SNE projection plane. With additional selection criteria of radial velocity, location in the color-magnitude diagram, and abundances from a manual chemical analysis, we find a total of 73 cluster member candidates; seven extra-tidal stars are found beyond the tidal radii of the two …
The tidal tails of globular clusters have been shown to be sensitive to the external tidal field. We investigate how Galactic globular clusters with observed tails are affected by satellite dwarf galaxies by simulating tails in galaxy models with and without dwarf galaxies. The simulations indicate that tidal tails can be subdivided into into three categories based on how they are affected by dwarf galaxies: 1) dwarf galaxies perturb the progenitor cluster's orbit (NGC 4590, Pal 1, Pal 5), 2) dwarf galaxies perturb the progenitor cluster's orbit and individual tail stars (NGC 362, NGC 1851, NG…
We use deep imaging from the Dark Energy Camera to explore the peripheral regions of nine globular clusters in the outer halo of the Milky Way. Apart from Whiting 1 and NGC 7492, which are projected against the Sagittarius stream, we see no evidence for adjacent stellar populations to indicate any of these clusters is associated with coherent tidal debris from a destroyed host dwarf. We also find no evidence for tidal tails around any of the clusters in our sample; however, both NGC 1904 and 6981 appear to possess outer envelopes. Motivated by a slew of recent Gaia-based discoveries, we compil…
We report the identification of extended tidal debris potentially associated with the globular cluster NGC 3201, using the RAVE catalogue. We find the debris stars are located at a distance range of 1-7 kpc based on the forthcoming RAVE distance estimates. The derived space velocities and integrals of motion show interesting connections to NGC 3201, modulo uncertainties in the proper motions. Three stars, which are among the 4 most likely candidates for NGC 3201 tidal debris, are separated by 80 degrees on the sky yet are well matched by the 12 Gyr, [Fe/H] = -1.5 isochrone appropriate for the …
Using photometry and proper motions from Gaia Data Release 2, we detect a 50 degree-long stream of about 70 stars extending westward from the halo globular cluster M5. Based on the similarities in distance, proper motions, inferred color-magnitude distribution, and trajectory, we identify this stream as the trailing tidal tail of M5. While the surface density of stars is very low (~1.5 stars per square degree, or approximately 35 magnitudes per square arcsecond), selecting only stars having proper motions consistent with the orbit of the cluster yield a detection significance ~10 sigma. While …
The RR Lyrae (RRL) rich globular cluster M 62 (NGC 6266) is one of the most massive globular clusters in the Milky Way, located in the dense region of the Galactic bulge, where dynamical processes that affect the survival of globular clusters are maximised. Using Gaia DR2 data we have found clear evidence for an excess of RRLs beyond the cluster tidal radius of M 62, associated partly with stars stripped into the Galaxy field. This is confirmed with new VVVX survey observations, that discard any differential reddening effect as the possible cause of the observed RRL density excess. We also det…
Globular clusters are some of the oldest bound stellar structures observed in the Universe. They are ubiquitous in large galaxies and are believed to trace intense star formation events and the hierarchical build-up of structure. Observations of globular clusters in the Milky Way, and a wide variety of other galaxies, have found evidence for a `metallicity floor', whereby no globular clusters are found with chemical (`metal') abundances below approximately 0.3 to 0.4 per cent of that of the Sun. The existence of this metallicity floor may reflect a minimum mass and a maximum redshift for survi…
We study the outer regions of the Milky Way globular cluster NGC6981 from publicly available $BV$ photometry and new Dark Energy Camera (DECam) observations, both reaching nearly 4 mag below the cluster main sequence (MS) turnoff. While the $BV$ data sets reveal the present of extra-tidal features around the cluster, the much larger field of view of DECam observations allowed us to identify some other tidal features, which extend from the cluster toward the opposite direction to the Milky Way center. These cluster structural features arise from stellar density maps built using MS stars, once t…
Recent results from chemical tagging studies using APOGEE data suggest a strong link between the chemical abundance patterns of stars found within globular clusters, and chemically peculiar populations in the Galactic halo field. In this paper we analyse the chemical compositions of stars within the cluster body and tidal streams of Palomar 5, a globular cluster that is being tidally disrupted by interaction with the Galactic gravitational potential. We report the identification of nitrogen-rich (N-rich) stars both within and beyond the tidal radius of Palomar 5, with the latter being clearly …
We study the outer regions of the Milky Way globular cluster NGC 7089 based on new Dark Energy Camera (DECam) observations. The resulting background cleaned stellar density profile reveals the existence of an extended envelope. We confirm previous results that cluster stars are found out to ~ 1deg from the cluster's centre, which is nearly three times the value of the most robust tidal radii estimations. We also used results from direct N-body simulations in order to compare with the observations. We found a fairly good agreement between the observed and numerically generated stellar density p…
To investigate the origin of elevated globular cluster abundances observed around Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs), we simulate globular cluster populations hosted by UDGs formed through tidal heating. Specifically, globular cluster (GC) formation is modeled as occurring in regions of dense star formation. Because star-formation-rate-densities are higher at high redshift, dwarf galaxies in massive galaxy clusters, which formed most of their stars at high redshift, form a large fraction of their stars in globular clusters. Given that UDGs formed through environmental processes are more likely to b…
We present results on the extra-tidal features of the Milky Way globular cluster NGC 7099, using deep gr photometry obtained with the Dark Energy Camera (DECam). We reached nearly 6 mag below the cluster Main Sequence (MS) turnoff, so that we dealt with the most suitable candidates to trace any stellar structure located beyond the cluster tidal radius. From star-by-star reddening corrected color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) we defined four adjacent strips along the MS, for which we built the respective stellar density maps, once the contamination by field stars was properly removed. The resulting…
The peripheral regions of globular clusters (GCs) are extremely challenging to study due to their low surface brightness nature and the dominance of Milky Way contaminant populations along their sightlines. We have developed a probabilistic approach to this problem through utilising a mixture model in spatial and proper motion space which separately models the cluster, extra-tidal and contaminant stellar populations. We demonstrate the efficacy of our method through application to Gaia EDR3 photometry and astrometry in the direction of NGC 5139 ($ω$ Cen), a highly challenging target on account…
Recently, Kundu et al (2019) reported that the globular cluster NGC 5024 (M53) possesses five extra-tidal RR Lyrae. In fact, four of them were instead known members of a nearby globular cluster NGC 5053. The status of the remaining extra-tidal RR Lyrae is controversial depending on the adopted tidal radius of NGC 5024. We have also searched for additional extra-tidal RR Lyrae within an area of $\sim8$~deg$^2$ covering both globular clusters. This includes other known RR Lyrae within the search area, as well as stars that fall within the expected range of magnitudes and colors for RR Lyrae (and…
DELVE-ing into the Milky Way's Globular Clusters: Assessing extra-tidal features in NGC 5897, NGC 7492, and testing detectability with deeper photometry
The ultra-diffuse galaxy NGC 1052-DF2 has an overabundance of luminous globular clusters (GCs), and its kinematics is consistent with the presence of little to no dark matter. As the velocity dispersion among the GCs is comparable to the expected internal dispersions of the individual GCs, the galaxy might be highly conducive to GC-GC merging. If true, this could explain the puzzling luminosity function of its GCs. Here, we examine this possibility by re-simulating three of our earlier simulations of the GC system (Dutta Chowdhury et al. 2019), where the GCs were modeled as single particles, w…
We present results on the stellar density radial profile of the outer regions of NGC6779, a Milky Way globular cluster recently proposed as a candidate member of the Gaia Sausage structure, a merger remnant of a massive dwarf galaxy with the Milky Way. Taking advantage of the Pan-STARRS PS1 public astrometric and photometric catalogue, we built the radial profile for the outermost cluster regions using horizontal branch and main sequence stars, separately, in order to probe for different profile trends because of difference stellar masses. Owing to its relatively close location to the Galactic…
Three-body interactions can eject stars from the core of a globular cluster, causing them to enter the Galactic halo as extra-tidal stars. While finding extra-tidal stars is imperative for understanding cluster evolution, connecting isolated extra-tidal field stars back to their birth cluster is extremely difficult. In this work, we present a new methodology consisting of high-dimensional data analysis and a particle spray code to identify extra-tidal stars of any Galactic globular cluster using M3 as a case study. Using the t-Stochastic Neighbour Embedding (t-SNE) and Uniform Manifold Approxi…
In this work a search was carried out for globular clusters belonging to the Sagittarius (Sgr) tidal stream using the analysis of spatial positions, radial velocities relative to the Galactic Standard of Rest (V_{GSR}),proper motions and ratio of "age -- metallicity" ([Fe/H]) for globular clusters and for stars in the tidal stream. As a result, three categories of globular clusters were obtained: A -- most certainly in the stream: Terzan 8, Whiting 1, Arp 2, NGC 6715, Terzan 7, Pal 12; B -- kinematic outliers: Pal 5, NGC 5904, NGC 5024, NGC 5053, NGC 5272, NGC 288; C -- lowest rank candidates:…
We present direct $N$-body simulations of tidally filling 30,000 ${\rm M}_\odot$ star clusters orbiting between 10 kpc and 100 kpc in galaxies with a range of dark matter substructure properties. The time-dependent tidal force is determined based on the combined tidal tensor of the galaxy's smooth and clumpy dark matter components, the latter of which causes fluctuations in the tidal field that can heat clusters. The strength and duration of these fluctuations are sensitive to the local dark matter density, substructure fraction, sub-halo mass function, and the sub-halo mass-size relation. Bas…
We use photometry from the DECam Legacy Survey to detect candidate tidal tails extending ~5 deg on either side of the Palomar 13 globular cluster. The tails are aligned with the proper motion of Palomar 13 and are consistent with its old, metal-poor stellar population. We identify three RR Lyrae stars that are plausibly associated with the tails, in addition to four previously known in the cluster. From these RR Lyrae stars, we find that the mean distance to the cluster and tails is $23.6 \pm 0.2$ kpc and estimate the total (initial) luminosity of the cluster to be $L_V=5.1^{+9.7}_{-3.4}\times…
We present an upgraded version of the \MOCCA code for the study of dynamical evolution of globular clusters (GCs) and its first application to the study of evolution of multiple stellar populations. We explore initial conditions spanning different structural parameters for the first (FG) and second generation of stars (SG) and we analyze their effect on the binary dynamics and survival. Here, we focus on the number ratio of FG and SG binaries, its spatial variation, and the way their abundances are affected by various cluster initial properties. We find that present-day SG stars are more abund…
We use {\it Gaia} DR2 photometry and proper motions to search for the hypothetical tidal tails of the Galactic globular cluster E\,3. Using a modified version of a classical decontamination procedure, we are able to identify the presence of an extended structure emerging from the cluster up to $r \sim 1$\,deg from its center, thus suggesting that this poorly studied cluster is undergoing a tidal disruption process. These low surface-brightness structures are aligned with the direction to the Galactic center, as expected for a cluster close to its perigalacticon. Different scenarios to explain …
We present for the first time extended stellar density and/or surface brightness radial profiles for almost all the known Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) old globular clusters (GCs). These were built from DECam images and reach out to ~ 4 times the GCs' tidal radii. The background subtracted radial profiles reveal that the GCs located closer than ~ 5 kpc from the LMC centre contain an excess of stars in their outermost regions with respect to the stellar density expected from a King profile. Such a residual amount of stars - not seen in GCs located farther than ~ 5 kpc from the LMC centre-, as we…
