The globular clusters of large spiral galaxies can be divided into two populations: one which formed in-situ and one which comprises clusters tidally stripped away from other galaxies. In this paper we investigate the contribution to the outer globular cluster population in the M31 galaxy through donation of clusters from dwarf galaxies. We test this numerically by comparing the contribution of globular clusters from simulated encounters to the observed M31 globular cluster population. To constrain our simulations, we specifically investigate the outermost globular cluster in the M31 system, MGC1. The remote location of MGC1 favours the idea of it being captured, however, the cluster is devoid of features associated with tidal interactions. Hence we separate simulations where tidal features are present and where they are hidden. We find that our simulated encounters can place clusters on MGC1-like orbits. In addition, we find that tidal stripping of clusters from dwarf galaxies leaves them on orbits having a range of separations, broadly matching those observed in M31. We find that the specific energies of globular clusters captured by M31 closely matches those of the incoming host dwarf galaxies. Furthermore, in our simulations we find an equal number of accreted clusters on co-rotating and counter-rotating orbits within M31 and use this to infer the fraction of clusters that has been accreted. We find that even close in roughly 50% of the clusters are accreted, whilst this figure increases to over 80% further out.
We investigate the spatial density configuration of stars around four metal-poor globular clusters (NGC 6266, NGC 6626, NGC 6642 and NGC 6723) in the Galactic bulge region using wide-field deep J, H, and K imaging data obtained with the WFCAM near-infrared array on United Kingdom Infrared Telescope. Statistical weighted filtering algorithm for the stars on the color-magnitude diagram is applied in order to sort cluster member candidates from the field star contamination. In two-dimensional isodensity contour maps of the clusters, we find that all of the four globular clusters exhibit strong ev…
Using a cosmological N-body numerical simulation of the formation of a galaxy cluster- sized halo, we analyze the temporal evolution of its globular cluster population. We follow the dynamical evolution of 38 galactic dark matter halos orbiting in a galaxy cluster that at redshift z=0 has a virial mass of 1.71 * 10 ^14 Msol h^-1. In order to mimic both "blue" and "red" populations of globular clusters, for each galactic halo we select two different sets of particles at high redshift (z ~ 1), constrained by the condition that, at redshift z=0, their average radial density profiles are similar t…
Globular clusters (GCs) are known to host multiple stellar populations showing chemical anomalies in the content of light elements. The origin of such anomalies observed in Galactic GCs is still debated. Here we analyse data compiled from the Hubble Space Telescope, ground-based surveys and Gaia DR2 and explore relationships between the structural properties of GCs and the fraction of second population (2P) stars. Given the correlations we find, we conclude that the main factor driving the formation/evolution of 2P stars is the cluster mass. The existing strong correlations between the 2P frac…
Galaxy clusters contain a large population of low mass dwarf elliptical galaxies whose exact origin is unclear: their colors, structural properties and kinematics differ substantially from those of dwarf irregulars in the field. We use the Illustris cosmological simulation to study differences in the assembly paths of dwarf galaxies (3e8 < M_*/M_sun < 1e10) according to their environment. We find that cluster dwarfs achieve their maximum total and stellar mass on average ~ 8 and ~ 4.5 Gyr ago (or redshifts z = 1.0 and z = 0.4, respectively), around the time of infall into the clusters. In cont…
We study the dynamical evolution of globular clusters using our Hénon-type Monte Carlo code for stellar dynamics including all relevant physics such as two-body relaxation, single and binary stellar evolution, Galactic tidal stripping, and strong interactions such as physical collisions and binary mediated scattering. We compute a large database of several hundred models starting from broad ranges of initial conditions guided by observations of young and massive star clusters. We show that these initial conditions very naturally lead to present day clusters with properties including the centra…
We use the hydrodynamical EAGLE simulation to test if ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) can form by tidal stripping by predicting the ages and metallicities of tidally stripped galaxy nuclei in massive galaxy clusters, and compare these results to compiled observations of age and metallicities of observed UCDs. We further calculate the colours of our sample of simulated stripped nuclei using SSP models and compare these colours to observations of UCDs in the Virgo cluster. We find that the ages of observed UCDs are consistent with simulated stripped nuclei, with both groups of objects having…
Using photometry and proper motions from Gaia Data Release 2, we detect a 50 degree-long stream of about 70 stars extending westward from the halo globular cluster M5. Based on the similarities in distance, proper motions, inferred color-magnitude distribution, and trajectory, we identify this stream as the trailing tidal tail of M5. While the surface density of stars is very low (~1.5 stars per square degree, or approximately 35 magnitudes per square arcsecond), selecting only stars having proper motions consistent with the orbit of the cluster yield a detection significance ~10 sigma. While …
A method to search for tidal streams and to fit their orbits based on maximum likelihood is presented and applied to the Gaia data. Tests of the method are performed showing how a simulated stream produced by tidal stripping of a star cluster is recovered when added to a simulation of the Gaia catalogue. The method can be applied to search for streams associated with known progenitors or to do blind searches in a general catalogue. As the first example, we apply the method to the globular cluster M68 and detect its clear tidal stream stretching over the whole North Galactic hemisphere, and pas…
Many scenarios for the origin of the chemical anomalies observed in globular clusters (GCs; i.e., multiple populations) require that GCs were much more massive at birth, up to $10-100\times$, than they are presently. This is invoked in order to have enough material processed through first generation stars in order to form the observed numbers of enriched stars (inferred to be second generation stars in these models). If such mass loss was due to tidal stripping, gas expulsion, or tidal interaction with the birth environment, there should be clear correlations between the fraction of enriched s…
We conduct a comprehensive numerical study of the orbital dependence of harassment on early-type dwarfs consisting of 168 different orbits within a realistic, Virgo-like cluster, varying in eccentricity and pericentre distance. We find harassment is only effective at stripping stars or truncating their stellar disks for orbits that enter deep into the cluster core. Comparing to the orbital distribution in cosmological simulations, we find that the majority of the orbits (more than three quarters) result in no stellar mass loss. We also study the effects on the radial profiles of the globular c…
We report the detection of a pair of degree-long tidal tails associated with the globular cluster Palomar 14, using images obtained at the CFHT. We reveal a power-law departure from a King profile at large distances to the cluster center. The density map constructed with the optimal matched filter technique shows a nearly symmetrical and elongated distribution of stars on both sides of the cluster, forming a S-shape characteristic of mass loss. This evidence may be the telltale signature of tidal stripping in action. This, together with its large Galactocentric distance, imposes strong constra…
We present result from DECam SDSS i PSF photometry of the radial stellar density profiles of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) old globular clusters (GCs) NGC1841, 2210, Hodge11 and Reticulum, which extent out of ~ 380 pc from their centres. We found that the studied LMC GCs would not seem to exhibit extended stellar structures like those frequently seen in Galactic globular clusters (GGCs), which could suggest that the LMC gravitational field has not been efficient in stripping stars off its GCs. The concentration parameter $c$ of the studied LMC GCs would seem to depend on both the internal d…

Recent interpretation of the color$-$magnitude diagrams of the Milky Way (MW) bulge has suggested that the observed double red-clump feature can be a natural consequence of He-enhanced stellar populations in the MW bulge. This implies that globular clusters (GCs), where the He-enhanced second-generation (SG) stars can be efficiently created, are the most likely candidate contributors of He-rich stars to the MW bulge. We extend this idea to the Galactic inner halo and investigate the fraction of the SG stars as a function of the Galactocentric distance. We use bluer blue-horizontal branch (bBHB…
Globular clusters (GCs), the oldest stellar systems observed in the Milky Way, have for long been considered single stellar populations. As such, they provided an ideal laboratory to understand stellar dynamics and primordial star formation processes. However, during the last two decades, observations unveiled their real, complex nature. Beside their pristine stars, GCs host one or more helium enriched and possibly younger stellar populations whose formation mechanism is still unknown. Even more puzzling is the existence of GCs showing star by star iron spreads. Using detailed N-body simulatio…
Modelling and Subtracting Diffuse Cluster Light in JWST Images: A Relation between the Spatial Distribution of Globular Clusters, Dwarf Galaxies, and Intracluster Light in the Lensing Cluster SMACS 0723
Observations of globular clusters (GCs) and field stars in the halos of the giant elliptical galaxy Cen A and the spiral galaxy M31 show a large range of cluster-to-star number ratios ('specific frequencies'). The cluster-to-star ratio decreases with increasing metallicity by a factor of 100-1000, at all galactocentric radii and with a slope that does not seem to depend on radius. In dwarf galaxies, the GCs are also more metal-poor than the field stars on average. These observations indicate a strong dependence of either the cluster formation efficiency or the cluster destruction rate on metal…
We report the discovery of a complex extended density enhancement in the Globular Clusters (GCs) in the central $\sim 0.5(^{\circ})^2$ ($\sim 0.06$ Mpc$^2$) of the Fornax cluster, corresponding to $\sim 50\%$ of the area within 1 core radius. This overdensity connects the GC system of NGC1399 to most of those of neighboring galaxies within $\sim 0.6^{\circ}$ ($\sim 210$ kpc) along the W-E direction. The asymmetric density structure suggests that the galaxies in the core of the Fornax cluster experienced a lively history of interactions that have left a clear imprint on the spatial distribution…
We use the Millennium II cosmological simulation combined with the semi-analytic galaxy formation model of Guo et al. (2011) to predict the contribution of galactic nuclei formed by the tidal stripping of nucleated dwarf galaxies to globular cluster (GC) and ultra-compact dwarf galaxy (UCD) populations of galaxies. We follow the merger trees of galaxies in clusters back in time and determine the absolute number and stellar masses of disrupted galaxies. We assume that at all times nuclei have a distribution in nucleus-to-galaxy mass and nucleation fraction of galaxies similar to that observed i…
We combine a new, comprehensive database for globular cluster populations in all types of galaxies with a new calibration of galaxy halo masses based entirely on weak lensing. Correlating these two sets of data, we find that the mass ratio $η\equiv M_{GCS}/M_{h}$ (total mass in globular clusters, divided by halo mass) is essentially constant at $\langle η\rangle \sim 4 \times 10^{-5}$, strongly confirming earlier suggestions in the literature. Globular clusters are the only known stellar population that formed in essentially direct proportion to host galaxy halo mass. The intrinsic scatter in …
We report the discovery from Hubble Space Telescope ACS images of an extended globular cluster, denoted by Scl-dE1 GC1, in the Sculptor Group dwarf Elliptical galaxy Scl-dE1 (Sc22). The distance of the dE is determined as 4.3 +/- 0.25 Mpc from the I magnitude of the tip of the red giant branch in the color-magnitude diagram. At this distance the half-light radius of Scl-dE1 GC1 is ~22 pc, placing it among the largest clusters known, particularly for globular clusters associated with dwarf galaxies. The absolute magnitude of Scl-dE1 GC1 is Mv = -6.7 and, to within the photometric uncertainties …
[KKS2000]04 (NGC1052-DF2) has become a controversial and well-studied galaxy after the claims suggesting a lack of dark matter and the presence of an anomalously bright globular cluster (GC) system around it. A precise determination of its overall star formation history (SFH) as well as a better characterisation of its GC or planetary nebulae (PN) systems are crucial aspects to: i) understand its real nature, in particular placing it within the family of ultra diffuse galaxies; ii) shed light on its possible formation, evolution, and survival in the absence of dark matter. With this purpose we…
We report the discovery of an extended globular cluster in a halo field in Centaurus A (NGC 5128), situated $\sim 38\kpc$ from the centre of that galaxy, imaged with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope. At the distance of the galaxy, the half-light radius of the cluster is r_h ~ 17pc, placing it among the largest globular clusters known. The faint absolute magnitude of the star cluster, M_(V,o)=-5.2, and its large size render this object somewhat different from the population of extended globular clusters previously reported, making it the first firm detection i…
We present results on the basis of Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey (DECaLS) DR8 astrometric and photometric data sets of the Milky Way globular cluster Pal 13. Because of its relative small size and mass, there has not been yet a general consensus about the existence of extra-tidal structures around it. While some previous results claim for the absence of such features, others have shown that the cluster is under the effects of tidal stripping. From DECaLS g,r magnitudes of stars placed along the cluster Main Sequence in the colour-magnitude diagram --previously corrected by interstellar redd…
Galactic and extragalactic studies have shown that metal-rich globular clusters (GCs) are approximately three times more likely to host bright low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) than metal-poor GCs. There is no satisfactory explanation for this metallicity effect. We tested the hypothesis that the number density of red giant branch (RGB) stars is larger in metal-rich GCs, and thus potentially the cause of the metallicity effect. Using Hubble Space Telescope photometry for 109 unique Milky Way GCs, we investigated whether RGB star density was correlated with GC metallicity. Isochrone fitting was u…

Palomar 5 is one of the sparsest star clusters in the Galactic halo and is best-known for its spectacular tidal tails, spanning over 20 degrees across the sky. With N-body simulations we show that both distinguishing features can result from a stellar-mass black hole population, comprising ~20% of the present-day cluster mass. In this scenario, Palomar 5 formed with a `normal' black hole mass fraction of a few per cent, but stars were lost at a higher rate than black holes, such that the black hole fraction gradually increased. This inflated the cluster, enhancing tidal stripping and tail form…
The central density profiles in dwarf galaxy halos depend strongly on the nature of dark matter. Recently, in Malhan et al. (2021), we employed N-body simulations to show that the cuspy cold dark matter (CDM) subhalos predicted by cosmological simulations can be differentiated from cored subhalos using the properties of accreted globular cluster (GC) streams since these GCs experience tidal stripping within their parent halos prior to accretion onto the Milky Way. We previously found that clusters that are accreted within cuspy subhalos produce streams with larger physical widths and higher di…
We present a detailed comparison of the Milky Way (MW) globular cluster (GC) kinematics with the 25 Milky Way-mass cosmological simulations from the E-MOSAICS project. While the MW falls within the kinematic distribution of GCs spanned by the simulations, the relative kinematics of its metal-rich ($[\rm{Fe/H}]>-1.2$) versus metal-poor ($[\rm{Fe/H}]<-1.2$), and inner ($r<8\rm{kpc}$) versus outer ($r>8\rm{kpc}$) populations are atypical for its mass. To understand the origins of these features, we perform a comprehensive statistical analysis of the simulations, and find 18 correlations describin…
The previously clear division between small galaxies and massive star clusters is now occupied by objects called ultra compact dwarfs (UCDs) and compact ellipticals (cEs). Here we combine a sample of UCDs and cEs with velocity dispersions from the AIMSS project with literature data to explore their dynamical-to-stellar mass ratios. We confirm that the mass ratios of many UCDs in the stellar mass range 10$^6$ -- 10$^9$ M$_{\odot}$ are systematically higher than those for globular clusters which have mass ratios near unity. However, at the very highest masses in our sample, i.e. 10$^9$ -- 10$^{1…
In this work, we use $N-$body simulations performed on GPU to trace the past 10 Gyr dynamical history of a globular cluster (GC) similar to NGC~6397 in the tidal field of a Milky Way-like galaxy and we compare our simulated GCs with data from the third Gaia early data release. Our simulations predict, in contrast to what is deduced from the data, that such a cluster should present strong and extended tidal tails by more than 6 Gyr ago (right after the first third of its life), exceeding 1 kpc of length, and should be roughly disrupted by current time. We analyzed each of our initial conditions…
The steepness of the central density profiles of dark matter (DM) in low-mass galaxy halos (e.g. dwarf galaxies) is a powerful probe of the nature of DM. We propose a novel scheme to probe the inner profiles of galaxy subhalos using stellar streams. We show that the present day morphological and dynamical properties of accreted globular cluster (GC) streams - those produced from tidal stripping of GCs that initially evolved within satellite galaxies and later merged with the Milky Way (MW) - are sensitive to the central DM density profile and mass of their parent satellites. GCs that accrete w…
(abridged) Context. Gravitational fields at the outskirts of early-type galaxies (ETGs) are difficult to constrain observationally. It thus remains poorly explored how well the LCDM and MOND hypotheses agree with ETGs. Aims. This led us to gather a large sample of ETGs and examine homogeneously which dark matter halos they occupy, whether the halos follow the theoretically predicted stellar-to-halo mass relation (SHMR) and the halo mass-concentration relation (HMCR), whether ETGs obey MOND and the radial acceleration relation (RAR) observed for late-type galaxies (LTGs), and finally whether LC…
We suggest a direct link between the two "missing" baryon problems of contemporary galaxy formation theory: (1) that large galaxies are known to contain too little gas and stars and (2) that too few dwarf satellite galaxies are observed around large galaxies compared with cosmological simulations. The former can be explained by invoking some energetic process -- most likely AGN or star formation feedback -- which expels to infinity a significant fraction of the gas initially present in the proto-galaxy, while the latter problem is usually explained by star formation feedback inside the dwarf o…
The dark matter (DM) content of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy inferred from its kinematics is substantially lower than expected from LCDM cosmological simulations. We use N-body simulations to examine whether this may be the result of Galactic tides. We find that, despite improved proper motions from the Gaia mission, the pericentric distance of Fornax remains poorly constrained, mainly because its largest velocity component is roughly anti-parallel to the solar motion. Translating Fornax's proper motion into a Galactocentric velocity is thus sensitively dependent on Fornax's assumed dist…
It has been known since the 1950's that the observed gas content of Galactic globular clusters (GCs) is 2-3 orders of magnitude less than the mass lost by stars between Galactic disk crossings. In this work we address the question: What happens to this stellar gas? Using an Eulerian nested grid code, we present 3D simulations to determine how stellar wind material evolves within the GC environment. We expand upon work done in the 70's and move a single-mass King-model GC through the Galactic halo medium, stripping a 10^5 Msun GC of its intra-cluster medium but predicting a detectable medium fo…
We address the nature and origin of a spiral disk at the center of NGC 1275, the giant elliptical galaxy at the center of the Perseus cluster, that spans a radius of $\sim$$5\,\rm kpc$. By comparing stellar absorption lines measured in long-slit optical spectra with synthetic spectra for single stellar populations, we find that fitting of these lines requires two stellar populations: (i) a very young population that peaks in radial velocity at $\pm 250 {\rm \, km \, s^{-1}}$ of the systemic velocity within a radius of $\sim$$720\,\rm pc$ of the nucleus, a $1\,σ$ velocity dispersion significant…
We present a post-processing catalog of globular clusters (GCs) for the $39$ most massive groups and clusters in the TNG50 simulation of the IlllustrisTNG project (virial masses $M_{200} =[5\times 10^{12} \rm - 2 \times 10^{14}$] M$_{\odot}$). We tag GC particles to all galaxies with stellar mass $M_* \geq 5\times10^6$ M$_{\odot}$, and we calibrate their masses to reproduce the observed power-law relation between GC mass and halo mass for galaxies with $M_{200} \geq 10^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$ (corresponding to $M_* \sim 10^9$ $M_{\odot}$). Here we explore whether an extrapolation of this $M_{\rm GC}…
Stars in globular clusters (GCs) lose a non negligible amount of mass during their post-main sequence evolution. This material is then expected to build up a substantial intra-cluster medium (ICM) within the GC. However, the observed gas content in GCs is a couple of orders of magnitude below these expectations. Here we follow the evolution of this stellar wind material through hydrodynamical simulations to attempt to reconcile theoretical predictions with observations. We test different mechanisms proposed in the literature to clear out the gas such as ram-pressure stripping by the motion of …
Old Globular Clusters (GCs) in the Milky Way have ages of about 13 Gyr, placing their formation time in the reionization epoch. We propose a novel scenario for the formation of these systems based on the merger of two or more atomic cooling halos at high-redshift (z>6). First generation stars are formed as an intense burst in the center of a minihalo that grows above the threshold for hydrogen cooling (halo mass M_h~10^8 Msun) by undergoing a major merger within its cooling timescale (~150 Myr). Subsequent minor mergers and sustained gas infall bring new supply of pristine gas at the halo cent…
Like most spiral galaxies, the Milky Way contains a population of blue, metal-poor globular clusters and another of red, metal-rich ones. Most of the latter belong to the bulge, and therefore they are poorly studied compared to the blue (halo) ones because they suffer higher extinction and larger contamination from field stars. These intrinsic difficulties, together with a lack of low-mass bulge globular clusters, are reasons to believe that their census is not complete yet. Indeed, a few new clusters have been confirmed in the last few years. One of them is VVV CL001, the subject of the prese…

By means of grid-based, 3D hydrodynamical simulations we study the formation of second generation (SG) stars in a young globular cluster (GC) of mass 10^7 Msun, the possible progenitor of an old GC with a present mass ~(1-5) * 10^6 Msun. The cluster accretes external gas as its first generation (FG) asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars release their ejecta and SG stars form. We consider two models characterised by different densities of the external gas. In both cases, we find that a very compact SG subsystem with central density >10^5M sun/pc^3 forms in the innermost regions of the cluster. Th…
Blue Straggler Stars (BSSs) are observed in Galactic globular clusters and old open clusters. The radial distribution of BSSs has been used to diagnose the dynamical evolution of globular clusters. For the first time, with a reliable sample of BSSs identified with Gaia DR2, we conduct such an analysis for an open cluster. We identify members, including BSSs, of the oldest known Galactic open cluster Berkeley 17 with the Gaia DR2 proper motions and parallaxes. We study the radial distribution of the BSS population to understand the dynamical evolution of the cluster. We select cluster members t…
We seek to differentiate dynamical and morphological attributes between globular clusters (GCs) that were formed inside their own dark matter (DM) mini-halo, and those who were not. We employ high resolution full N-body simulations on GPU of GCs with and without a DM mini-halo, orbiting a Fornax-like dwarf galaxy. For GCs with DM, we observe that this dark extra mass triggers a tidal radius growth that allows the mini-halo to act as a protective shield against tidal stripping, being itself stripped beforehand the stars. We demonstrate that this shielding effect becomes negligible when the tida…
We use near-infrared observations obtained as part of the {\sl Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy} (VISTA) Survey of the Magellanic Clouds (VMC), as well as two complementary {\sl Hubble Space Telescope} ({\sl HST}) data sets, to study the luminosity and mass functions as a function of clustercentric radius of the main-sequence stars in the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae. The {\sl HST} observations indicate a relative deficit in the numbers of faint stars in the central region of the cluster compared with its periphery, for $18.75\leq m_{\rm F606W}\leq 20.9$ mag (corresp…
Using archival {\it Chandra} observations with a total effective exposure of 734 ks, we derive an updated catalog of point sources in the massive globular cluster Terzan 5. Our catalog covers an area of $58.1\, \rm arcmin^{2}$ ($R\leq 4.3 \, \rm arcmin$) with 489 X-ray sources, and more than $75\%$ of these sources are first detected in this cluster. We find significant dips in the radial distribution profiles of X-ray sources in Terzan 5, with the projected distance and width of the distribution dips for bright ($L_{X} \gtrsim 9.5\times 10^{30} {\rm\ erg\ \,s^{-1}}$) X-ray sources are larger …
A strong correlation exists between the total mass of a globular cluster (GC) system and the virial halo mass of the host galaxy. However, the total halo mass in this correlation is a statistical measure conducted on spatial scales that are some ten times that of a typical GC system. Here we investigate the connection between GC systems and galaxy's dark matter on comparable spatial scales, using dynamical masses measured on a galaxy-by-galaxy basis. Our sample consists of 17 well-studied massive (stellar mass $\sim$10$^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$) early-type galaxies from the SLUGGS survey. We find the…
Globular Cluster (GC) Color-Magnitude Diagrams (CMDs) are reasonably well understood in terms of standard stellar-evolution. However, there are still some open issues, such as fully accounting for the Horizontal Branch (HB) morphology in terms of chemical and dynamical parameters. Mass-loss on the Red Giant Branch (RGB) shapes the mass-distribution of the HB stars, and the color distribution in turn. The physical mechanisms driving mass-loss are still unclear, as direct observations fail to reveal a clear correlation between mass-loss rate and stellar properties. The horizontal-branch mass-dis…
The Galactic globular cluster system is incomplete, especially in the low latitude regions of the Galactic bulge and disk. We report the physical characterization of twelve star clusters in the Milky Way, most of which are explored here for the first time. Our aim is determining their main physical parameters, such as reddening and extinction, metallicity, age, total luminosity, mean cluster proper motions (PMs), distances, in order to unveil their physical nature. We study the clusters using optical and near-infrared (NIR) datasets. We use the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) PMs in order to …
Blue straggler stars (BSS) are well studied in globular clusters but their systematic study with secure membership determination is lacking in open clusters. We use Gaia DR2 data to determine accurate stellar membership for four intermediate-age open clusters, Melotte 66, NGC 2158, NGC 2506 and NGC 6819, and three old open clusters, Berkeley 39, NGC 188 and NGC 6791, to subsequently study their BSS populations. The BSS radial distributions of five clusters, Melotte 66, NGC 188, NGC 2158, NGC 2506, and NGC 6791, show bimodal distributions, placing them with Family II globular clusters which are…
The most accurate 6D phase-space information from the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) was used to integrate the orbits of 105 stars around the galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae, to look for close encounters between them in the past, with a minimum distance approach less than the cluster tidal radius. The stars are currently over the distance range 3.0 kpc $<$ d $<$ 5.5 kpc. Using the uncertainties in the current position and velocity vector for both, star and cluster, 105 pairs of star-cluster orbits were generated in a Monte Carlo numerical scheme, integrated over 2 Gyr and considering a…
Previous studies have shown that dark matter deficient galaxies (DMDG) such as NGC1052-DF2 (hereafter DF2) can result from tidal stripping. An important question, though, is whether such a stripping scenario can explain DF2's large specific frequency of globular clusters (GCs). After all, tidal stripping and shocking preferentially remove matter from the outskirts. We examine this using idealized, high-resolution simulations of a regular dark matter dominated galaxy that is accreted onto a massive halo. As long as the initial (pre-infall) dark matter halo of the satellite is cored, which is co…
Context. Stellar collision rates in globular clusters (GCs) do not appear to correlate with horizontal branch (HB) morphology, sug- gesting that dynamics does not play a role in the second-parameter problem. However, core densities and collision rates derived from surface-brightness may be significantly underestimated as the surface-brightness profile of GCs is not necessarily a good indicator of the dynamical state of GC cores. Core-collapse may go unnoticed if high central densities of dark remnants are present. Aims. We test whether GC HB morphology data supports a dynamical contribution to…
We compare the predictions of a semi-analytic model for ultra-compact dwarf galaxy (UCD) formation by tidal stripping to the observed properties of globular clusters (GCs) and UCDs in the Fornax and Virgo clusters. For Fornax we find the predicted number of stripped nuclei agrees very well with the excess number of GCs$+$UCDs above the GC luminosity function. GCs$+$UCDs with masses $>10^{7.3}$ M$_\odot$ are consistent with being entirely formed by tidal stripping. Stripped nuclei can also account for Virgo UCDs with masses $>10^{7.3}$ M$_\odot$ where numbers are complete by mass. For both Forn…
We derive stellar population parameters for a representative sample of ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs) and a large sample of massive globular clusters (GCs) with stellar masses $\gtrsim$ 10$^{6}$ $M_{\odot}$ in the central galaxy M87 of the Virgo galaxy cluster, based on model fitting to the Lick-index measurements from both the literature and new observations. After necessary spectral stacking of the relatively faint objects in our initial sample of 40 UCDs and 118 GCs, we obtain 30 sets of Lick-index measurements for UCDs and 80 for GCs. The M87 UCDs have ages $\gtrsim$ 8 Gyr and [$α$/Fe] $\simeq…
