Globular clusters (GCs) are known to host multiple stellar populations showing chemical anomalies in the content of light elements. The origin of such anomalies observed in Galactic GCs is still debated. Here we analyse data compiled from the Hubble Space Telescope, ground-based surveys and Gaia DR2 and explore relationships between the structural properties of GCs and the fraction of second population (2P) stars. Given the correlations we find, we conclude that the main factor driving the formation/evolution of 2P stars is the cluster mass. The existing strong correlations between the 2P fraction and the rotational velocity and concentration parameter could derive from their correlation with the cluster mass. Furthermore, we observe that increasing cluster escape velocity corresponds to higher 2P fractions. Each of the correlations found is bimodal, with a different behaviour detected for low and high mass (or escape velocity) clusters. These correlations could be consistent with an initial formation of more centrally concentrated 2P stars in deeper cluster potentials, followed by a long-term tidal stripping of stars from clusters outskirts. The latter are dominated by the more extended distributed first population (1P) stars, and therefore stronger tidal stripping would preferentially deplete the 1P population, raising the cluster 2P fraction. This also suggests a tighter distribution of initial 2P fractions than observed today. In addition, higher escape velocities allow better retention of low-velocity material ejected from 1P stars, providing an alternative/additional origin for the observed differences and the distributions of 2P fractions amongst GCs.
We investigate the formation of infant globular cluster (GC) candidates in high-resolution cosmological simulations from the First Billion Years (FiBY) project. By analysing the evolution of the systems in the energy and angular momentum plane, we identify the redshift at which the infant GCs first became gravitationally bound, and we find evidence of radial infall of their gaseous and stellar components. The collapse appears to be driven by internal self-gravity, however, the initial trigger is sourced from the external environment. The phase space behaviour of the infant GCs also allows us t…
We present O, Na, and Fe abundances, as well as radial velocities, for 113 red giant branch (RGB) and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the globular cluster M13. The abundances and velocities are based on spectra obtained with the WIYN-Hydra spectrograph, and the observations range in luminosity from the horizontal branch (HB) to RGB-tip. The results are examined in the context of recent globular cluster formation scenarios. We find that M13 exhibits many key characteristics that suggest its formation and chemical enrichment are well-described by current models. Some of these observations…
We review our recent studies of the globular cluster system of NGC 5128. First, we have obtained low-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectroscopy of 72 globular clusters using Gemini-S/GMOS to obtain the ages, metallicities, and the level of alpha enrichment of the metal-poor and metal-rich globular cluster subpopulations. Second, we have explored the rotational signature and velocity dispersion of the galaxy's halo using over 560 globular clusters with radial velocity measurements. We have also compared the dependence of these properties on galactocentric distance and globular cluster age an…
We set out to compare the age-metallicity relation (AMR) of massive clusters from Magellanic Cloud mass galaxies in the E-MOSAICS suite of numerical cosmological simulations with an amalgamation of observational data of massive clusters in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC/SMC). We aim to test if: i) star cluster formation proceeds according to universal physical processes, suggestive of a common formation mechanism for young-massive clusters (YMCs), intermediate-age clusters (IACs), and ancient globular clusters (GCs); ii) massive clusters of all ages trace a continuous AMR; iii) the…
We have determined masses, stellar mass functions and structural parameters of 112 Milky Way globular clusters by fitting a large set of N-body simulations to their velocity dispersion and surface density profiles. The velocity dispersion profiles were calculated based on a combination of more than 15,000 high-precision radial velocities which we derived from archival ESO/VLT and Keck spectra together with ~20,000 published radial velocities from the literature. Our fits also include the stellar mass functions of the globular clusters, which are available for 47 clusters in our sample, allowin…
We collected radial velocities of more than 50.000 individual stars in 156 Galactic globular clusters (GGC) and matched them with HST photometry and Gaia DR2 proper motions. This allowed us to derive the GGC's mean proper motions and space velocities. By fitting a large set of N-body simulations to their velocity dispersion and surface density profiles, combined with new measurements of their internal radially dependent mass functions, we have determined their present-day masses and structural parameters, and for 144 GGCs their internal kinematics. We also derive the initial cluster masses by …
We present BV photometry of four Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy globular clusters: Arp 2, NGC 5634, Palomar 12, and Terzan 8, obtained with the Danish telescope at ESO-La Silla. We measure the structural parameters of the clusters using a King profile fitting, obtaining the first reliable measurements of the tidal radius of Arp 2 and Terzan 8. These two clusters are remarkably extended and with low concentrations; with a concentration of only c = 0.41 +/- 0.02, Terzan 8 is less concentrated than any cluster in our Galaxy. Blue stragglers are identified in the four clusters, and their spat…
In this paper, we present the properties of 10 halo globular clusters with luminosities $L\simeq 5-7\times 10^5{L_\odot}$ in the Local Group galaxy M33 using the images of {\it Hubble Space Telescope} Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 in the F555W and F814W bands. We obtained ellipticities, position angles and surface brightness profiles for them. In general, the ellipticities of M33 sample clusters are similar to those of M31 clusters. The structural and dynamical parameters are derived by fitting the profiles to three different models combined with mass-to-light ratios ($M/L$ values) from popula…
We present result from DECam SDSS i PSF photometry of the radial stellar density profiles of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) old globular clusters (GCs) NGC1841, 2210, Hodge11 and Reticulum, which extent out of ~ 380 pc from their centres. We found that the studied LMC GCs would not seem to exhibit extended stellar structures like those frequently seen in Galactic globular clusters (GGCs), which could suggest that the LMC gravitational field has not been efficient in stripping stars off its GCs. The concentration parameter $c$ of the studied LMC GCs would seem to depend on both the internal d…
We report on the search for overall kinematical or structural conditions that have allowed some Milky Way globular clusters to presently develop tidal tails. For this purpose, we build a comprehensive catalogue of globular clusters with studies focused on their outermost regions and classified them in three categories: those with observed tidal tails, those with extra-tidal features different from tidal tails and those without any signature of extended stellar density profiles. When exploring different kinematical and structural parameter spaces, we found that globular clusters - irrespective …
We report on the extent of the effects of the Milky Way's gravitational field in shaping the structural parameters and internal dynamics of its globular cluster population. We make use of a homogeneous, up-to-date data set with kinematics, structural properties, current and initial masses of 156 globular clusters. In general, cluster radii increase as the Milky Way potential weakens; with the core and Jacobi radii being those which increase at the slowest and fastest rate respectively. We interpret this result as the innermost regions of globular clusters being less sensitive to changes in the…
Globular Clusters (GCs) have historically been subdivided in either two (disk/halo) or three (disk/inner-halo/outer-halo) groups based on their orbital, chemical and internal physical properties. The qualitative nature of this subdivision makes it impossible to determine whether the natural number of groups is actually two, three, or more. In this paper we use cluster analysis on the $(\log M, \log σ_0, \log R_e, [Fe/H], \log | Z |)$ space to show that the intrinsic number of GC groups is actually either $k=2$ or $k=3$, with the latter being favored albeit non-significantly. In the $k=2$ case,…
We derive structural parameters for ~2000 globular clusters in the giant Virgo elliptical M87 using extremely deep Hubble Space Telescope images in F606W (V) and F814W (I) taken with the ACS/WFC. The cluster scale sizes (half-light radii r_h) and ellipticities are determined from PSF-convolved King-model profile fitting. We find that the r_h distribution closely resembles the inner Milky Way clusters, peaking at r_h~2.5 pc and with virtually no clusters more compact than r_h ~ 1 pc. The metal-poor clusters have on average an r_h 24% larger than the metal-rich ones. The cluster scale size shows…
We use our Galactic Globular Cluster Catalog (G2C2) photometry for 111 Galactic globular clusters (GC) in g and z, as well as r and i photometry for a subset of 60 GCs and u photometry for 22 GCs, to determine the structural parameters assuming King (1962) models. In general, the resulting core radii are in good comparison with the current literature values. However, our half-light radii are slightly lower than the literature. The concentrations (and therefore also the tidal radii) are poorly constrained mostly because of the limited radial extent of our imaging. Therefore, we extensively disc…
A new revision of the McMaster catalog of Milky Way globular clusters is available. This is the first update since 2003 and the biggest single revision since the original version of the catalog published in 1996. The list now contains a total of 157 objects classified as globular clusters. Major upgrades have been made especially to the cluster coordinates, metallicities, and structural profile parameters, and the list of parameters now also includes central velocity dispersion. NB: This paper is a stand-alone publication available only on the astro-ph archive; it will not be published separat…
We used a proper combination of high-resolution HST observations and wide-field ground based data to derive the radial star density profile of 26 Galactic globular clusters from resolved star counts (which can be all freely downloaded on-line). With respect to surface brightness (SB) profiles (which can be biased by the presence of sparse, bright stars), star counts are considered to be the most robust and reliable tool to derive cluster structural parameters. For each system a detailed comparison with both King and Wilson models has been performed and the most relevant best-fit parameters hav…
GC-1 and GC-2 are two globular clusters (GCs) in the remote halo of M81 and M82 in the M81 group discovered by Jang et al. using the {\it Hubble Space Telescope} ({\it HST}) images. These two GCs were observed as part of the Beijing--Arizona--Taiwan--Connecticut (BATC) Multicolor Sky Survey, using 14 intermediate-band filters covering a wavelength range of 4000--10000 Å. We accurately determine these two clusters' ages and masses by comparing their spectral energy distributions (from 2267 to 20000~Å, comprising photometric data in the near-ultraviolet of the {\it Galaxy Evolution Explorer}, 14…
By exploiting two ACS/HST datasets separated by a temporal baseline of ~7 years, we have determined the relative stellar proper motions (providing membership) and the absolute proper motion of the Galactic globular cluster M71. The absolute proper motion has been used to reconstruct the cluster orbit within a Galactic, three-component, axisymmetric potential. M71 turns out to be in a low latitude disk-like orbit inside the Galactic disk, further supporting the scenario in which it lost a significant fraction of its initial mass. Since large differential reddening is known to affect this system…
This is the third paper of a series of our works on the self-similar orbit-averaged Fokker-Planck (OAFP) equation. The first paper provided an accurate spectral solution of the equation for isotropic pre-collapse star clusters and the second detailed the physical feature of the model. Based on the works, the present work applies the solution to the observed structural profiles of Galactic globular clusters. For fitting to the profiles, the most fundamental (quasi-)stationary model, the King model, and the variants have shown successful results while they can not apply to core-collapsing and co…
We use high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope imaging data of dwarf galaxies in the Local Volume ($\lesssim 11$ Mpc) to parameterise 19 newly discovered nuclear star clusters (NSCs). Most of the clusters have stellar masses of $M_{\star}^{nsc} \lesssim 10^6$ M$_{\odot}$ and compare to Galactic globular clusters in terms of ellipticity, effective radius, stellar mass, and surface density. The clusters are modelled with a Sérsic profile and their surface brightness evaluated at the effective radius reveals a tight positive correlation to the host galaxy stellar mass. Our data also indicate an in…
We perform a systematic combined photometric and kinematic analysis of a sample of globular clusters under different relaxation conditions, based on their core relaxation time (as listed in available catalogs), by means of two well-known families of spherical stellar dynamical models. Systems characterized by shorter relaxation time scales are expected to be better described by isotropic King models, while less relaxed systems might be interpreted by means of non-truncated, radially-biased anisotropic f^(ν) models, originally designed to represent stellar systems produced by a violent relaxati…
We present a novel approach to constrain the formation channels of Ultra-Compact Dwarf Galaxies (UCDs). This inhomogeneous class of objects of remnants of tidally stripped dwarf elliptical galaxies and high mass globular clusters. We use three methods to unravel their nature: 1) we analysed their surface brightness profiles, 2) we carried out a direct search for tidal features around UCDs and 3) we compared the spatial distribution of GCs and UCDs in the halo of their host galaxy. Based on FORS2 observations, we have studied the detailed structural composition of a large sample of 97 UCDs in t…
We searched for trails to understand the different Na abundances measured in first and second generation stars of ancient Milky Way globular clusters. For that purpose, we gathered from the recent literature the aforementioned Na abundances, orbital parameters, structural and internal dynamical properties and ages in an homogeneous scale of 28 globular clusters. We found that the intra-cluster Na enrichment, measured by the difference of Na abundances between first and second generation stars, exhibits a trend as a function of the Na abundances of first generation stars, in the sense that the …
We present new spatial models and distance estimates for globular clusters (GC) and dwarf spheroidals (dSphs) orbiting our Galaxy based on RR Lyrae (RRab) stars in the Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) 3$π$ survey. Using the PS1 sample of RRab stars from Sesar et al. (2017) in 16 globular clusters and 5 dwarf galaxies, we fit structural models in $(l,b,D)$ space; for 13 globular clusters and 6 dwarf galaxies, we give only their mean heliocentric distance $D$. We verify the accuracy of the period-luminosity (PL) relations used in Sesar et al. (2017) to constrain the distance to those stars, and compare them to…
Globular clusters are prone to lose stars while moving around the Milky Way. These stars escape the clusters and are distributed throughout extended envelopes or tidal tails. However, such extra-tidal structures are not observed in all globular clusters, and yet there is no structural or dynamical parameters that can predict their presence or absence. NGC\,6864 is an outer halo globular cluster with reported no observed tidal tails. We used Dark Energy Camera (DECam) photometry reaching $\sim$ 4 mag underneath its main sequence turnoff to confidently detect an extra-tidal envelope, and stellar…
We have carried out a set of Monte Carlo simulations to study a number of fundamental aspects of the dynamical evolution of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters with different initial masses, fractions of second generation (2G) stars, and structural properties. Our simulations explore and elucidate: 1) the role of early and long-term dynamical processes and stellar escape in the evolution of the fraction of 2G stars and the link between the evolution of the fraction of 2G stars and various dynamical parameters; 2) the link between the fraction of 2G stars inside the cluster and in…
We studied the spatial distributions of multiple stellar populations (MPs) in a sample of 20 globular clusters (GCs) spanning a broad range of dynamical ages. The differences between first-population (FP) and second-population (SP) stars were measured by means of the parameter $A^+$, defined as the area enclosed between their cumulative radial distributions. We provide the first purely observational evidence of the dynamical path followed by MPs from initial conditions toward a complete FP-SP spatial mixing. Less dynamically evolved clusters have SP stars more centrally concentrated than FPs, …
Tidally disrupted globular cluster streams are usually observed, and therefore perceived, as narrow, linear and one-dimensional structures in the 6D phase-space. Here we show that the GD-1 stellar stream ($\approx$ 30 pc wide), which is the tidal debris of a disrupted globular cluster, possesses a secondary diffuse and extended stellar component ($\approx$ 100 pc wide) around it, detected at >5$σ$ confidence level. Similar morphological properties are seen in synthetic streams that are produced from star clusters that are formed within dark matter sub-halos and then accrete onto a massive host…
We study the connection between active galactic nuclei (AGN) and their host galaxies through cosmic time in the large-scale cosmological IllustrisTNG simulations. We first compare BH properties, i.e. the hard X-ray BH luminosity function, AGN galaxy occupation fraction, and distribution of Eddington ratios, to available observational constraints. The simulations produce a population of BHs in good agreement with observations, but we note an excess of faint AGN in hard X-ray (L_x ~ 10^{43-44} erg/s), and a lower number of bright AGN (L_x>10^{44} erg/s), a conclusion that varies quantitatively b…
Many observational studies have revealed the presence of multiple stellar generations in Galactic globular clusters. These studies suggest that second-generation stars make up a significant fraction of the current mass of globular clusters, with the second-generation mass fraction ranging from ~50 to 80 per cent in individual clusters. In this Letter we carry out hydrodynamical simulations to explore the dependence of the mass of second-generation stars on the initial mass and structural parameters and stellar initial mass function (IMF) of the parent cluster. We then use the results of these …
Linking globular clusters (GCs) to the assembly of their host galaxies is an overarching goal in GC studies. The inference of tight scaling relations between GC system properties and the mass of both the stellar and dark halo components of their host galaxies are indicative of an intimate physical connection, yet have also raised fundamental questions about how and when GCs form. Specifically, the inferred correlation between the mass of a GC system (Mgc) and the dark matter halo mass (Mhalo) of a galaxy has been posited as a consequence of a causal relation between the formation of dark matte…
[Abridged] M31 has several times more globular clusters (GCs) than the Milky Way. It contains a correspondingly larger number of low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) associated with GCs, and can be used to investigate the GC properties which lead to X-ray binary formation. The best tracer of the spatial structure of M31 GCs is high-resolution imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope, and we have used HST data to derive structural parameters for 29 LMXB-hosting M31 GCs. These measurements are combined with structural parameters from the literature for a total of 41 (of 50 known) LMXB GCs and a compar…
Recent observations of the white dwarf (WD) populations in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6397 suggest that WDs receive a kick of a few km/s shortly before they are born. Using our Monte Carlo cluster evolution code, which includes accurate treatments of all relevant physical processes operating in globular clusters, we study the effects of the kicks on their host cluster and on the WD population itself. We find that in clusters whose velocity dispersion is comparable to the kick speed, WD kicks are a significant energy source for the cluster, prolonging the initial cluster core contraction…
We report results of proper motions of 15 known Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) old globular clusters (GCs) derived from the Gaia DR2 data sets. When these mean proper motions are gathered with existent radial velocity measurements to compose the GCs' velocity vectors, we found that the projection of the velocity vectors onto the LMC plane and those perpendicular to it tell us about two distinct kinematic GC populations. Such a distinction becomes clear if the GCs are split at a perpendicular velocity of 10 km/s (absolute value). The two different kinematic groups also exhibit different spatial d…
We use our integrated SDSS photometry for 96 globular clusters in $g$ and $z$, as well as $r$ and $i$ photometry for a subset of 56 clusters, to derive the integrated colour-metallicity relation (CMR) for Galactic globular clusters. We compare this relation to previous work, including extragalactic clusters, and examine the influence of age, present-day mass function variations, structural parameters and the morphology of the horizontal branch on the relation. Moreover, we scrutinise the scatter introduced by foreground extinction (including differential reddening) and show that the scatter in…
We investigate the effect that dwarf galaxies have on the orbits, tidal histories, and assumed formation environment of Milky Way globular clusters. We determine the orbits of the Milky Way's 150 globular clusters in a gravitational potential both with and without dwarf galaxies. We find that the presence of a small number of satellite galaxies can affect the orbits of many of the globular clusters. Over 12 Gyr, we find that the semi-major axis and orbital eccentricity of individual clusters fluctuate with dispersions on the order of $\sim 10\%$ and $\sim 4\%$, respectively. Outer clusters are…
The halo and disc globular cluster population can be used as a tracer of the primordial epochs of the Milky Way formation. In this work, literature data of globular clusters ages, chemical abundances, and structural parameters are studied, explicitly focussing on the origin of the known split in the age-metallicity relation of globular clusters. When the alpha-element abundances, which are less strongly affected by the internal light-element spread of globular clusters (Si, Ca), are considered, a very low observational scatter among metal-poor clusters is observed. A plateau at [SiCa/Fe]~0.35 …
We study the links between star formation history and structure for a large mass-selected galaxy sample at 0.05 < z_phot < 0.30. The galaxies inhabit a very broad range of environments, from cluster cores to the field. Using HST images, we quantify their structure following Hoyos et al. (2012), and divide them into disturbed and undisturbed. We also visually identify mergers. Additionally, we provide a quantitative measure of the degree of disturbance for each galaxy ("roughness"). The majority of elliptical and lenticular galaxies have relaxed structure, showing no signs of ongoing star forma…
NGC 4993 hosts a binary neutron star merger emitting gravitational waves and electromagnetic waves, GW170817/GRB 170817A. The distance to this galaxy is not well established. We select the globular cluster candidates from the Hubble Space Telescope/ACS F606W images of NGC 4993 in the archive, using the structural parameters of the detected sources. The radial number density distribution of these candidates shows a significant central concentration around the galaxy center at the galactocentric distance $r<50''$, showing that they are mostly the members of NGC 4993. Also the luminosity function…
One of the conundrums in extragalactic astronomy is the discrepancy in observed metallicity distribution functions (MDFs) between the two prime stellar components of early-type galaxies-globular clusters (GCs) and halo field stars. This is generally taken as evidence of highly decoupled evolutionary histories between GC systems and their parent galaxies. Here we show, however, that new developments in linking the observed GC colors to their intrinsic metallicities suggest nonlinear color-to-metallicity conversions, which translate observed color distributions into strongly-peaked, unimodal MDF…
The discovery of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters raises fundamental questions concerning the formation and dynamical history of these systems. In a previous study aimed at exploring the formation of second-generation (SG) stars from the ejecta of first-generation (FG) AGB stars, and the subsequent dynamical evolution of the cluster, we showed that SG stars are expected to form in a dense subsystem concentrated in the inner regions of the FG cluster. In this paper we explore the implications of the structural properties of multiple-population clusters, and in particular the pr…
We present results from 2MASS JKs photometry on the physical reality of recently reported globular cluster (GC) candidates in the Milky Way (MW) bulge. We relied our analysis on photometric membership probabilities that allowed us to distinguish real stellar aggregates from the composite field star population. When building colour-magnitude diagrams and stellar density maps for stars at different membership probability levels, the genuine GC candidate populations are clearly highlighted. We then used the tip of the red giant branch (RGB) as distance estimator, resulting heliocentric distances …
We present kinematical analyses of 22 Galactic globular clusters using the Hubble Space Telescope proper motion (HSTPROMO) catalogues recently presented in Bellini et al. (2014). For most clusters, this is the first proper-motion study ever performed, and, for many, this is the most detailed kinematic study of any kind. We use cleaned samples of bright stars to determine binned velocity-dispersion and velocity-anisotropy radial profiles and two-dimensional velocity-dispersion spatial maps. Using these profiles, we search for correlations between cluster kinematics and structural properties. We…
In this paper, we discuss how globular clusters (GCs) structural and observational properties can be used to infer the presence of a black hole system (BHS) inhabiting their inner regions. We propose a novel way to identify the BHS size, defined as the GC radius containing a mass contributed equally from stars and stellar BHs. Using this definition, similar to the well-known concept of "influence radius", we found a "fundamental plane" connecting the BHS typical density with the GC central surface density profile, total luminosity and observational half-mass radius. Our approach allows us to d…
Over the last few decades, exhaustive surveys of extra Galactic globular clusters (EGGCs) have become feasible. Only recently, kinematical information of globular clusters (GCs) were available through Gaia DR2 spectroscopy and also proper motions. On the other hand, simulations of GCs can provide detailed information about the dynamical evolution of the system. We present a preliminary study of EGGCs' properties for different dynamical evolutionary stages. We apply this study to 12 Gyr-old GCs simulated as part of the MOCCA Survey Database. Mimicking observational limits, we consider only a su…
We present a photometric and spectroscopic study of the Milky Way satellite Laevens 3. Using MegaCam/CFHT g and i photometry and Keck II/DEIMOS multi-object spectroscopy, we refine the structural and stellar properties of the system. The Laevens 3 colour-magnitude diagram shows that it is quite metal-poor, old (13.0 +-1.0 Gyr), and at a distance of 61.4+-1.0 kpc, partly based on two RR Lyrae stars. The system is faint (Mv = -2.8+0.2-0.3 mag) and compact (r = 11.4+-1.0 pc). From the spectroscopy, we constrain the systemic metallicity ([Fe/H]spectro = -1.8+-0.1 dex) but the metallicity and veloc…
Halo inhabitants are individual stars, stellar streams, star and globular clusters, and dwarf galaxies. Here we compare the two last categories that include objects of similar stellar mass, which are often studied as self-dynamical equilibrium systems. We discover that the half-light radius of globular clusters depends on their orbital pericenter and total energy, and that Milky Way (MW) tides may explain the observed correlation. We also suggest that the accretion epoch of stellar systems in the MW halo can be calibrated by the total orbital energy, and that such a relation is due to both the…
In addition to their low stellar densities, ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) have a broad variety of dynamical mass-to-light ratios, ranging from dark matter (DM) dominated systems to objects nearly devoid of DM. To investigate the origin of this diversity, we develop a simple, semi-empirical model that predicts the structural evolution of galaxies, driven by feedback from massive star clusters, as a function of their departure from the mean SMHM relation. The model predicts that a galaxy located $\gtrsim 0.5$ dex above the mean relation at $M_{\rm halo}=10^{10}M_{\odot}$ will host a factor of $\…
Blue hook (BHk) stars are a rare class of horizontal branch stars that so far have been found in only very few Galactic globular clusters (GCs). The dominant mechanism for producing these objects is currently still unclear. In order to test if the presence of BHk populations in a given GC is linked to specific physical or structural cluster properties, we have constructed a parent sample of GCs for which existing data is sufficient to establish the presence or absence of BHk populations with confidence. We then compare the properties of those clusters in our parent sample that do contain a BHk…
We present deep Magellan/Megacam stellar photometry of four recently discovered faint Milky Way satellites: Sagittarius II (Sgr II), Reticulum II (Ret II), Phoenix II (Phe II), and Tucana III (Tuc III). Our photometry reaches ~2-3 magnitudes deeper than the discovery data, allowing us to revisit the properties of these new objects (e.g., distance, structural properties, luminosity measurements, and signs of tidal disturbance). The satellite color-magnitude diagrams show that they are all old (~13.5 Gyr) and metal-poor ([Fe/H]$\lesssim-2.2$). Sgr II is particularly interesting as it sits in an …
Images from the HST ACS are used to carry out a new photometric study of the globular clusters (GCs) in M104, the Sombrero galaxy. The primary focus of our study is the characteristic distribution function of linear sizes (SDF) of the GCs. We measure the effective radii for 652 clusters with PSF-convolved King and Wilson dynamical model fits. The SDF is remarkably similar to those measured for other large galaxies of all types, adding strong support to the view that it is a "universal" feature of globular cluster systems. We develop a more general interpretation of the size distribution functi…
We present results on the stellar density radial profile of the outer regions of NGC6779, a Milky Way globular cluster recently proposed as a candidate member of the Gaia Sausage structure, a merger remnant of a massive dwarf galaxy with the Milky Way. Taking advantage of the Pan-STARRS PS1 public astrometric and photometric catalogue, we built the radial profile for the outermost cluster regions using horizontal branch and main sequence stars, separately, in order to probe for different profile trends because of difference stellar masses. Owing to its relatively close location to the Galactic…
