We study spatial correlation effects in multiorbital systems, especially in a paramagnetic metallic state subject to Hund's coupling. We apply a cluster extension of the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) to the three-orbital Hubbard model away from half filling, where previous single-site DMFT studies revealed that local correlation effects caused by Hund's coupling bring about unusual strongly-correlated metallic behaviors. We find that Hund's coupling significantly affects the nonlocal correlations, too; it strongly modulates the electron distribution in the momentum space so as to make a momentum region almost half-filled and hence strongly correlated. It leads to an anomalous electronic state distinct both from the Fermi liquid and the Mott insulator. We identify the mechanism of the anomalous state with the intersite ferromagnetic correlations induced by Hund's coupling.
We consider nonlocal correlations in iron in the vicinity of the $α$-$γ$ phase transition within the spin-rotationally-invariant dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) approach, combined with the recently proposed spin-fermion model of iron. The obtained nonlocal corrections to DMFT yield a decrease of the Curie temperature of the $α$ phase, leading to an agreement with its experimental value. We show that the corresponding nonlocal corrections to the energy of the $α$ phase are crucially important to obtain the proximity of energies of $α$ and $γ$ phases in the vicinity of the iron $α$-$γ$ transf…
The two-particle vertex function is crucial for the diagrammatic extensions beyond DMFT for the nonlocal fluctuation. However, estimating the two-particle quantities is still a challenging task. In this study, we propose a simplification of the local two-particle full vertex and, using the simplified full vertex, we develop two methods to take into account the nonlocal fluctuation. We apply these methods to several models and confirm that our methods can capture important behaviors such as the pseudo gap in the DMFT + nonlocal calculation. In addition, the numerical costs are largely reduced c…
Spectral properties of fcc-Ce have been calculated in frames of modern DFT+DMFT method with Hybridization expansion CT-QMC solver. The influence of Hund's exchange and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on spectral properties of Ce were investigated. SOC is responsible for the shape of spectra near the Fermi level and Hund's exchange interaction doesn't change the obtained spectra and can be neglected.
We formulate a general cluster Dual Fermion Approach to nonlocal correlations in crystals. The scheme allows the treatment of long-range correlations beyond cluster DMFT and nonlocal effects in realistic calculations of multiorbital systems. We show that the the simplest approximation exactly corresponds to free cluster DMFT. We further consider the relation between the two-particle Green functions in real and dual variables. We apply this approach by calculating the Green function of the Hubbard model in one dimension starting from the two-site cluster DMFT solution. The result agrees well wi…
We show that the numerical renormalization group (NRG) is a viable multi-band impurity solver for Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT), offering unprecedent real-frequency spectral resolution at arbitrarily low energies and temperatures. We use it to obtain a numerically exact DMFT solution to the Hund's metal problem for a three-orbital model with filling factor $n_d=2$. The ground state is a Fermi liquid. The one-particle spectral function has a strong particle-hole asymmetry, with a clear apparent power law for positive frequencies only. With increasing temperature it shows a coherence-incohe…
Theoretical methods that are accurate for both short-distance observables and long-wavelength collective modes are still being developed for the Hubbard model. Here, we benchmark an approach that combines dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) observables with the two-particle self-consistent theory (TPSC). This offers a way to include non-local correlations in DMFT while also improving TPSC. The benchmarks are published diagrammatic quantum Monte Carlo results for the two-dimensional square lattice Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor hopping. This method (TPSC+DMFT) is relevant for weak to interm…
We study the Anderson lattice model with one f-orbital per lattice site as the simplest model which describes generic features of heavy fermion materials. The resistivity and magnetic susceptibility results obtained within dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) for a nearly half-filled conduction band show the existence of a single energy scale $T^*$ which is similar to the single ion Kondo temperature $T_K^o$. To determine the importance of inter-site correlations, we have also solved the model within cellular DMFT (CDMFT) with two sites in a unit cell. The antiferromagnetic region on the phase d…
We study the low temperature transport characteristics of a disordered metal in the presence of electron-electron interactions. We compare Hartree-Fock and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) calculations to investigate the scattering processes of quasiparticles off the screened disorder potential and show that both the local and non-local (coming from long-ranged Friedel oscillations) contributions to the renormalized disorder potential are suppressed in strongly renormalized Fermi liquids. Our results provide one more example of the power of DMFT to include higher order terms left out by weak…

We present a systematical theoretical study on the transport properties of an archetypal family of Hund's metals, Sr$_2$RuO$_4$,Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$, SrRuO$_3$ and CaRuO$_3$, within the combination of first principles density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory. The agreement between theory and experiments for optical conductivity and resistivity is good, which indicates that electron-electron scattering dominates the transport of ruthenates. We demonstrate that in the single-site dynamical mean field approach the transport properties of Hund's metals fall into the scenario of "resi…
For reliable and efficient inclusion of electron-electron correlation effects in nanosystems we propose a combined density-functional-theory/nonhomogeneous dynamical-mean-field-theory (DFT + DMFT) approach which employs an approximate Iterative Perturbative Theory (IPT) impurity solver. The validity of the method is demonstrated by successful examination of the size-dependent magnetic properties of iron nanoparticles containing 11-100 atoms. We show that the DFT+ DMFT solution is in very good agreement with experimental data, in particular it does not lead to the overestimation of magnetizatio…
The cubic perovskite SrVO$_3$ is generally considered to be a prototype strongly correlated metal with a characteristic three-peak structure of the $d$-electron spectral function, featuring a renormalized quasiparticle band in between pronounced Hubbard sidebands. Here we show that this interpretation, which has been supported by numerous "ab-initio" simulations, has to be reconsidered. Using a fully self-consistent $GW$+extended dynamical mean-field theory calculation we find that the screening from nonlocal Coulomb interactions substantially reduces the effective local Coulomb repulsion, and…
Strong electronic correlations pose one of the biggest challenges to solid state theory. We review recently developed methods that address this problem by starting with the local, eminently important correlations of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). On top of this, non-local correlations on all length scales are generated through Feynman diagrams, with a local two-particle vertex instead of the bare Coulomb interaction as a building block. With these diagrammatic extensions of DMFT long-range charge-, magnetic-, and superconducting fluctuations as well as (quantum) criticality can be address…
The two-band Hubbard model involving subbands of different widths is investigated via finite-temperature exact diagonalization (ED) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). In contrast to the quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method which at low temperatures includes only Ising-like exchange interactions to avoid sign problems, ED permits a treatment of Hund's exchange and other onsite Coulomb interactions on the same footing. The role of finite-size effects caused by the limited number of bath levels in this scheme is studied by analyzing the low-frequency behavior of the subband self-energies as a fu…
Magnetic properties of Li$_x$CoO$_2$ for $x = 0.94, 0.75, 0.66$ and $0.51$ were investigated in frames of method combining Generalized Gradient Approximation with Dynamical Mean--Field Theory (GGA+DMFT). We found that a delicate interplay between Hund's exchange energy and $t_{2g}-e_g$ crystal field splitting is responsible for the high spin to low spin state transition for Co$^{4+}$ ions. The GGA+DMFT calculations show that at small doping level the Co$^{4+}$ ions adopt high spin state, while delithiation results in increase of the crystal field splitting and low spin state becomes preferable…
A technique allowing for a perturbative treatment of nonlocal corrections to the single-site dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) in finite dimensions is developed. It is based on the observation that in the case of strong electron correlation the one-electron Green's function is strongly spatially damped so that its intersite matrix elements may be considered as small perturbations. Because the non-local corrections are at least quadratic in these matrix elements, DMFT in such cases may be a very accurate approximation in dimensions d = 1-3. This observation provides a rigorous justification fo…
We investigate the violation of the first Hund's rule in 4$d$ and 5$d$ transition metal oxides that form solids of dimers. Bonding states within these dimers reduce the magnetization of such materials. We parametrize the dimer formation with realistic hopping parameters and find not only regimes, where the system behaves as a Fermi liquid or as a Peierls insulator, but also strongly correlated regions due to Hund's coupling and its competition with the dimer formation. The electronic structure is investigated using the cluster dynamical mean-field theory for a dimer in the two-plane Bethe latt…
We consider electronic correlation effects and their impact on magnetic properties of tetragonally distorted chemically ordered FeCo alloys (L1$_0$ structure) being a promising candidate for rare-earth-free permanent magnets. We employ a state-of-the-art method combining density functional and dynamical mean-field theory. According to our results, the predicted Curie temperature reduces with increase of lattice parameters ratio $c/a$ and reaches nearly 850 K at ${c/a=1.22}$. For all considered $c/a$ from 1 to $\sqrt{2}$, we find well-localized magnetic moments on Fe sites, which are formed due…
In this paper, we investigate how nonlocal correlations affect, selectively, the physics of correlated electrons over different energy scales, from the Fermi level to the band-edges. This goal is achieved by applying a diagrammatic extension of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT), the dynamical vertex approximation (D$Γ$A), to study several spectral and thermodynamic properties of the unfrustrated Hubbard model in two and three dimensions. Specifically, we focus first on the low-energy regime by computing the electronic scattering rate and the quasiparticle mass renormalization for decreasing t…
We investigate the electronic structure of a perovskite-type Pauli paramagnet SrMoO3 (t2g2) thin film using hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and compare the results to the realistic calculations that combine the density functional theory within the local-density approximation (LDA) with the dynamical-mean field theory (DMFT). Despite the clear signature of electron correlations in the electronic specific heat, the narrowing of the quasiparticle bands is not observed in the photoemission spectrum. This is explained in terms of the characteristic effect of Hund's rule coupling for partially…
The very first dynamical implementation of the combined GW and dynamical mean field scheme "GW+DMFT" for a real material was achieved recently [J.M. Tomczak et al., Europhys. Lett. 100 67001 (2012)], and applied to the ternary transition metal oxide SrVO3. Here, we review and extend that work, giving not only a detailed account of full GW+DMFT calculations, but also discussing and testing simplified approximate schemes. We give insights into the nature of exchange and correlation effects: Dynamical renormalizations in the Fermi liquid regime of SrVO3 are essentially local, and nonlocal correla…
We introduce a cluster DMFT (Dynamical Mean Field Theory) approach to study the normal state of the iron pnictides and chalcogenides. In the regime of moderate mass renormalizations, the self-energy is very local, justifying the success of single site DMFT for these materials and for other Hunds metals. We solve the corresponding impurity model with CTQMC (Continuous Time Quantum Monte-Carlo) and find that the minus sign problem is not severe in regimes of moderate mass renormalization.
We study the two-dimensional Hubbard model in the weak-coupling regime and compare the self-energy obtained from various approximate diagrammatic schemes to the result of diagrammatic Monte Carlo simulations, which sum up all weak-coupling diagrams up to a given order. While dynamical mean-field theory provides a good approximation for the local part of the self-energy, including its frequency dependence, the partial summation of bubble and/or ladder diagrams typically yields worse results than second order perturbation theory. Even widely used self-consistent schemes such as GW or the fluctua…
We study $1s$ and $2p$ hard x-ray photoemission spectra (XPS) in a series of late transition metal oxides: Fe$_2$O$_3$ (3$d^{5}$), FeTiO$_3$ (3$d^{6}$), CoO (3$d^{7}$) and NiO (3$d^{8}$). The experimental spectra are analyzed with two theoretical approaches: the MO$_6$ cluster model and the local density approximation (LDA) + dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Owing to the absence of the core-valence multiplets and spin-orbit coupling, 1$s$ XPS is found to be a sensitive probe of chemical bonding and nonlocal charge-transfer screening, providing complementary information to 2$p$ XPS. The 1$s$…
New insights into the microscopic origin of itinerant ferromagnetism were recently gained from investigations of electronic lattice models within dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). In particular, it is now established that even in the one-band Hubbard model metallic ferromagnetism is stable at intermediate values of the interaction U and density n on regular, frustrated lattices. Furthermore, band degeneracy along with Hund's rule couplings is very effective in stabilizing metallic ferromagnetism in a broad range of electron fillings. DMFT also permits one to investigate more complicated corr…
We solve the double exchange model on nanoscopic clusters exactly, and specifically consider a six-site benzene-like nanocluster. This simple model is an ideal testbed for studying magnetism in nanoclusters and for validating approximations such as the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). Non-local correlations arise between neighboring localized spins due to the Hund's rule coupling, favoring a short-range magnetic order of ferro- or antiferromagnetic type. For a geometry with more neighboring sites or a sufficiently strong hybridization between leads and the nanocluster, these non-local corre…
We study the effect of spatially nonlocal correlations on the nonequilibrium dynamics of interacting fermions by constructing the nonequilibrium dynamical cluster theory, a cluster generalization of the nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The formalism is applied to interaction quenches in the Hubbard model in one and two dimensions, and the results are compared with data from single-site DMFT, the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group, and lattice perturbation theory. Both in one and two dimensions the double occupancy quickly thermalizes, while the momentum distr…
Motivated by the intriguing physics of quasi-2d fermionic systems, such as high-temperature superconducting oxides, layered transition metal chalcogenides or surface or interface systems, the development of many-body computational methods geared at including both local and non-local electronic correlations has become a rapidly evolving field. It has been realized, however, that the success of such methods can be hampered by the emergence of noncausal features in the effective or observable quantities involved. Here, we present a new approach of extending local many-body techniques such as dyna…
LDA+DMFT (Local Density Approximation combined with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory) computation scheme has been used to calculate spectral properties of LaFeAsO -- the parent compound of the new high-T_c iron oxypnictides. The average Coulomb repulsion U=3-4 eV and Hund's exchange J=0.8 eV parameters for iron 3d electrons were calculated using the first principles constrained density functional theory scheme in the Wannier functions formalism. DMFT calculations using these parameters result in moderately correlated electronic structure with effective electron mass enhancement m^*~2 that is in agr…
We present an approach that combines the local density approximation (LDA) and the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) in the framework of the full-potential linear augmented plane waves (FLAPW) method. Wannier-like functions for the correlated shell are constructed by projecting local orbitals onto a set of Bloch eigenstates located within a certain energy window. The screened Coulomb interaction and Hund's coupling are calculated from a first-principle constrained RPA scheme. We apply this LDA+DMFT implementation, in conjunction with continuous-time quantum Monte-Carlo, to study the electroni…
Multiorbital systems away from global half-filling host intriguing physical properties promoted by Hund's coupling. Despite increasing awareness of this regime dubbed Hund's metal, effect of nonlocal interaction is still elusive. Here we study a three-orbital model with $1/3$ filling (two electrons per site) including the intersite Coulomb interaction ($V$). Using the $GW$ plus extended dynamical mean-field theory, the valence-skipping charge order transition is shown to be driven by $V$. Most interestingly, the instability to this transition is significantly enhanced in the spin-freezing cros…
Hund metals are multi-orbital systems with moderate Coulomb interaction, $U$, and sizeable Hund's rule coupling, $J<U$, that aligns the spins in different orbitals. They show strong correlation effects, like very low Fermi-liquid coherence scales and intriguing incoherent transport regimes, resulting in bad metallic behavior. But to what extent are these strong correlations governed by Mottness, i.e. the blocking of charge fluctuations close to a Mott insulator transition (MIT) induced by $U$, or by Hundness, a new route towards strong correlations induced by $J$? To answer this question, we s…
We present an efficient ab initio dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) implementation for quantitative simulations in solids. Our DMFT scheme employs ab initio Hamiltonians defined for impurities comprising the full unit cell or a supercell of atoms and for realistic quantum chemical basis sets. We avoid double counting errors by using Hartree-Fock as the low-level theory. Intrinsic and projected atomic orbitals (IAO+PAO) are chosen as the local embedding basis, facilitating numerical bath truncation. Using an efficient integral transformation and coupled-cluster Green's function (CCGF) impurity…
We investigate via LDA+DMFT (local density approximation combined with dynamical mean field theory) the manifestation of correlation effects in a wide range of binding energies in the hole-doped family of Fe-pnictides $A$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($A={\rm K}$, Rb, Cs) as well as the fictitious FrFe$_2$As$_2$ and $a$-axis stretched CsFe$_2$As$_2$. This choice of systems allows for a systematic analysis of the interplay of Hund's coupling $J_H$ and on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$ in multi-orbital Fe-pnictides under negative pressure. With increasing ionic size of the alkali metal, we observe a non-trivial chan…
We explore possible superconducting states in $t_{2g}$ multi-orbital correlated electron systems with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In order to study such systems in a controlled manner, we employ large-scale dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) simulations with the hybridization expansion continuous-time Quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC) impurity solver. To determine the pairing symmetry, we go beyond the local DMFT formalism using parquet equations to introduce the momentum dependence in the two-particle vertex and correlation functions. In the strong SOC limit, a singlet, $d$-wave pairing state…
In electronic systems with long-range Coulomb interaction, the nonlocal Fock exchange term has a band-widening effect. While this effect is included in combined many-body perturbation theory and dynamical mean field theory schemes, it is not taken into account in standard extended DMFT (EDMFT) calculations. Here, we include this instantaneous term in both approaches and investigate its effect on the phase diagram and dynamically screened interaction. We show that the largest deviations between previously presented EDMFT and $GW$+EDMFT results originate from the nonlocal Fock term, and that the…
Many of the fascinating and unconventional properties of several transition-metal compounds with partially filled d-shells are due to strong electronic correlations. While local correlations are in principle treated exactly within the frame of the dynamical mean-field theory, there are two major and interlinked routes for important further methodical advances: On the one hand, there is a strong need for methods being able to describe material-specific aspects, i.e., methods combining the DMFT with modern band-structure theory, and, on the other hand, nonlocal correlations beyond the mean-field…
We investigate the electronic structure of the highly anisotropic $β$ phase of metallic plutonium, within the combination of density functional theory (DFT) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). Its crystal structure gives rise to site and orbital selective electronic correlations, with coherent Pu-5$f_{5/2}$ states and very incoherent Pu-5$f_{7/2}$ states. The Hund's coupling is essential for determining the level of correlations of electrons in Pu-5$f$ states, and for the quasiparticle multiplets features in the Pu-5$f$ spectral function.
We present a detailed study of local and non-local correlations in the electronic structure of elemental transition metals carried out by means of the Quasiparticle Self-consistent GW (QSGW ) and Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT). Recent high resolution ARPES and Haas-van Alphen data of two typical transition metal systems (Fe and Ni) are used as case study. (i) We find that the properties of Fe are very well described by QSGW. Agreement with cyclotron and very clean ARPES measurements is excellent, provided that final-state scattering is taken into account. This establishes the exceptional r…
Late transition-metal oxides with small charge-transfer energy $Δ$ raise issues for state-of-the-art correlated electronic structure schemes such as the combination of density functional theory (DFT) with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The accentuated role of the oxygen valence orbitals in these compounds asks for an enhanced description of ligand-based correlations. Utilizing the rocksalt-like NiO as an example, we present an advancement of charge self-consistent DFT+DMFT by including self-interaction correction (SIC) applied to oxygen. This introduces explicit onsite O correlations as w…
We investigate the 5d transition metal oxide BaOsO$_3$ within a combination of density functional theory (DFT) and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), using a matrix-product-state impurity solver. BaOsO$_3$ has 4 electrons in the t$_{2g}$ shell akin to ruthenates but stronger spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and is thus expected to reveal an interplay of Hund's metal behavior with SOC. We explore the paramagnetic phase diagram as a function of SOC and Hubbard interaction strengths, identifying metallic, band (van-Vleck) insulating and Mott insulating regions. At the physical values of the two couplin…
LDA+DMFT (Local Density Approximation combined with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory) computation scheme has been used to calculate spectral properties of LaFeAsO -- the parent compound for new high-T$_c$ iron oxypnictides. Coulomb repulsion $U$ and Hund's exchange $J$ parameters for iron 3d electrons were calculated using \textit {first principles} constrained density functional theory scheme in Wannier functions formalism. Resulting values strongly depend on the number of states taken into account in calculations: when full set of O-$2p$, As-$4p$, and Fe-3d orbitals with corresponding bands are i…
The iso-electronic $d^{4}$ compounds of the $4d$ series show rich phase diagrams due to competing spin, charge and orbital degrees of freedom in presence of strong correlations and structural distortions. One such iso-electronic series, $Ca_{2-x}Sr_{x}RuO_{4}$, is studied within the GGA (and spin-orbit coupled GGA) plus DMFT formalism using the hybridization expansion of continuous time Quantum Monte Carlo solver. While the local dynamical correlations make $Sr_{2}RuO_{4}$ a Hund's metal, they drive $Ca_{2}RuO_{4}$ to a Mott insulating ground state. We study the dynamic and static single-parti…
