The domain of outer communication of five-dimensional asymptotically flat stationary spacetimes may possess non-trivial 2-cycles. We discuss how this may lead to a gross violation of black hole uniqueness, beyond the existence of black rings, even for solutions with two commuting rotational symmetries. We illustrate this with a simple example in minimal supergravity; a four parameter family of supersymmetric black hole solutions, with spherical horizon topology and a 2-cycle in the exterior. We show there are black holes in this family with identical conserved changes to the BMPV black hole, thereby demonstrating black hole non-uniqueness in this context. We find a decoupling limit of this family of black holes that yields spacetimes asymptotic to the near-horizon geometry of a BMPV black hole which contain a black hole and an exterior 2-cycle.
We discuss the uniqueness of asymptotically flat and static spacetimes in the $n$-dimensional Einstein-conformal scalar system. This theory potentially has a singular point in the field equations where the effective Newton constant diverges. We will show that the static spacetime with the conformal scalar field outside a certain surface $S_p$ associated with the singular point is unique.
We reexamine the Israel-type proof of the uniqueness theorem of the static spacetime outside the photon surface in the Einstein-conformal scalar system. We derive in a systematic fashion a new divergence identity which plays a key role in the proof. Our divergence identity includes three parameters, allowing us to give a new proof of the uniqueness.
We study global aspects of complete, non-singular asymptotically locally AdS spacetimes solving the vacuum Einstein equations whose conformal infinity is an arbitrary globally stationary spacetime. It is proved that any such solution which is asymptotically stationary to the past and future is itself globally stationary. This gives certain rigidity or uniqueness results for exact AdS and related spacetimes.
We prove that the most general solution of the Einstein equations with the cosmological constant which admits a principal conformal Killing-Yano tensor is the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS metric. Even when the Einstein equations are not imposed, any spacetime admitting such hidden symmetry can be written in a canonical form which guarantees the following properties: it is of the Petrov type D, it allows the separation of variables for the Hamilton-Jacobi, Klein-Gordon, and Dirac equations, the geodesic motion in such a spacetime is completely integrable. These results naturally generalize the results obtain…
We study the class of vacuum (Ricci flat) six-dimensional spacetimes admitting a non-degenerate multiple Weyl aligned null direction l, thus being of Weyl type II or more special. Subject to an additional assumption on the asymptotic fall-off of the Weyl tensor, we prove that these spacetimes can be completely classified in terms of the two eigenvalues of the (asymptotic) twist matrix of l and of a discrete parameter $U^0=\pm 1/2, 0$. All solutions turn out to be Kerr-Schild spacetimes of type D and reduce to a family of "generalized" Myers-Perry metrics (which include limits and analytic cont…
We prove the uniqueness theorem for stationary self-gravitating non-linear σ-models in five-dimensional spacetime. We show that the Myers-Perry vacuum Kerr spacetime is the only maximally extended, stationary, axisymmetric, asymptotically flat solution having the regular rotating event horizon with constant mapping.
We study spacetimes with a closed conformal Killing-Yano tensor. It is shown that the D-dimensional Kerr-NUT-de Sitter spacetime constructed by Chen-Lu-Pope is the only spacetime admitting a rank-2 closed conformal Killing-Yano tensor with a certain symmetry.
We prove the uniqueness theorem for self-gravitating non-linear sigma-models in higher dimensional spacetime. Applying the positive mass theorem we show that Schwarzschild-Tagherlini spacetime is the only maximally extended, static asymptotically flat solution with non-rotating regular event horizon with a constant mapping.
We discuss the uniqueness of the static spacetimes with non-trivial conformal scalar field. Then, we can show that the spacetime is unique to be the Bocharova-Bronnikov-Melnikov-Bekenstein solution outside the surface composed of the unstable circular orbit of photon(photon surface). In addition, we see that multi-photon surfaces having the same scalar field values do not exist.
In the present paper we prove a uniqueness theorem for the static and asymptotically flat solutions to the Einstein-scalar field equations which possess a photon sphere. We show that such solutions are uniquely specified by their mass $M$ and scalar charge $q$ and that they are isometric to the Janis-Newman-Winicour solution with the same mass and scalar charge subject to the inequality $\frac{q^2}{M^2}<3$.
We determine the most general solution of the five-dimensional vacuum Einstein equation, allowing for a cosmological constant, with (i) a Weyl tensor that is type II or more special in the classification of Coley et al., (ii) a non-degenerate "optical matrix" encoding the expansion, rotation and shear of the aligned null direction. The solution is specified by three parameters. It is locally isometric to the 5d Kerr-de Sitter solution, or related to this solution by analytic continuation or taking a limit. This is in contrast with four dimensions, where there exist infinitely many solutions wi…
The Fock quantization of fields propagating in cosmological spacetimes is not uniquely determined because of several reasons. Apart from the ambiguity in the choice of the quantum representation of the canonical commutation relations, there also exists certain freedom in the choice of field: one can scale it arbitrarily absorbing background functions, which are spatially homogeneous but depend on time. Each nontrivial scaling turns out into a different dynamics and, in general, into an inequivalent quantum field theory. In this work we analyze this freedom at the quantum level for a scalar fie…
We review recent results concerning general properties of higher dimensional black holes. The topics selected with particular focus are those concerning topology, symmetry, and uniqueness properties of asymptotically flat vacuum black holes in higher dimensional general relativity.
We review uniqueness theorems as well as other general results about higher dimensional black hole spacetimes. This includes in particular theorems about the topology of higher dimensional spacetimes, theorems about their symmetries (rigidity theorem), and the classification of supersymmetric black holes. We outline the basic ideas underlying the proofs of these statements, and we also indicate ways to generalize some of these results to more general contexts, such as more complicated theories.
We study a five-dimensional spacetime admitting, in the presence of torsion, a non-degenerate conformal Killing-Yano 2-form which is closed with respect to both the usual exterior differentiation and the exterior differentiation with torsion. Furthermore, assuming that the torsion is closed and co-closed with respect to the exterior differentiation with torsion, we prove that such a spacetime is the only spacetime given by the Chong-Cvetic-Lu-Pope solution for stationary, rotating charged black holes with two independent angular momenta in five-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity.
We explore spacetime symmetries and topologies of the two metric sectors in Hassan-Rosen bimetric theory. We show that, in vacuum, the two sectors can either share or have separate spacetime symmetries. If stress-energy tensors are present, a third case can arise, with different spacetime symmetries within the same sector. This raises the question of the best definition of spacetime symmetry in Hassan-Rosen bimetric theory. We emphasize the possibility of imposing ansätze and looking for solutions having different Killing vector fields or different isometries in the two sectors, which has gain…
We prove that certain asymptotically flat initial data sets with nontrivial topology and/or differentiable structure collapse to form singularities. The class of such initial data sets is characterized by a new smooth invariant, the maximal Yamabe invariant, defined through smooth compactification of the asymptotically flat manifold. Our singularity theorem applies to spacetimes admitting a Cauchy surface of nonpositive maximal Yamabe invariant with initial data that satisfies the dominant energy condition. This class of spacetimes includes simply connected spacetimes with a single asymptotic …
We investigate topology changing processes in the WKB approximation of four dimensional quantum cosmology with a negative cosmological constant. As Riemannian manifolds which describe quantum tunnelings of spacetime we consider constant negative curvature solutions of the Einstein equation i.e. hyperbolic geometries. Using four dimensional polytopes, we can explicitly construct hyperbolic manifolds with topologically non-trivial boundaries which describe topology changes. These instanton-like solutions are constructed out of 8-cell's, 16-cell's or 24-cell's and have several points at infinity …
A sigma model formulation for static dilaton black holes with N Abelian gauge fields was presented. We proved uniqueness of static asymptotically flat spacetimes with non-degenerate black holes for the considered theory.
We prove the uniqueness theorem for asymptotically flat static vacuum black hole solutions in higher dimensional space-times. We also construct infinitely many non-asymptotically flat regular static black holes on the same spacetime manifold with the same spherical topology.
The higher-dimensional Kerr-NUT-de Sitter spacetime describes the general rotating asymptotically de Sitter black hole with NUT parameters. It is known that such a spacetime possesses a rank-2 closed conformal Killing-Yano (CKY) tensor as a ``hidden'' symmetry which provides the separation of variables for the geodesic equations and Klein-Gordon equations. We present a classification of higher-dimensional spacetimes admitting a rank-2 closed CKY tensor. This provides a generalization of the Kerr-NUT-de Sitter spacetime. In particular, we show that the Kerr-NUT-de Sitter spacetime is the only s…
Emergent gravity is based on the Darboux theorem or the Moser lemma in symplectic geometry stating that the electromagnetic force can always be eliminated by a local coordinate transformation as far as U(1) gauge theory is defined on a spacetime with symplectic structure. In this approach, the spacetime geometry is defined by U(1) gauge fields on noncommutative (NC) spacetime. Accordingly the topology of spacetime is determined by the topology of NC U(1) gauge fields. We show that the topology change of spacetime is ample in emergent gravity and the subsequent resolution of spacetime singulari…
We study the Fock quantization of scalar fields in (generically) time dependent scenarios, focusing on the case in which the field propagation occurs in --either a background or effective-- spacetime with spatial sections of flat compact topology. The discussion finds important applications in cosmology, like e.g. in the description of test Klein-Gordon fields and scalar perturbations in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime in the observationally favored flat case. Two types of ambiguities in the quantization are analyzed. First, the infinite ambiguity existing in the choice of a Fock represen…
In the present paper we prove a classification (uniqueness) theorem for stationary, asymptotically flat black hole spacetimes with connected and non-degenerate horizon in 4D Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with an arbitrary dilaton coupling parameter $α$. We show that such black holes are uniquely specified by the length of the horizon interval, angular momentum, electric and magnetic charge and the value of the dilaton field at infinity when the dilaton coupling parameter satisfies $0\le α^2\le3$. The proof is based on the nonpositivity of the Riemann curvature operator on the space of the po…
We prove the uniqueness theorem for static higher dimensional charged black holes spacetime containing an asymptotically flat spacelike hypersurface with compact interior and with both degenerate and non-degenerate components of the event horizon.
A physical mechanism for CPT violation is reviewed, which relies on chiral fermions, gauge interactions, and nontrivial spacetime topology. The nontrivial topology can occur at the very largest scale (e.g., at the "edge" of the universe) or at the very smallest scale (e.g., from a hypothetical spacetime foam). The anomalous effective gauge field action includes, most likely, a CPT-odd Chern-Simons-like term. Two phenomenological photon models with Abelian Chern-Simons-like terms are discussed.
From the viewpoint of differential geometry and topology, we investigate the characterization of the shadows in a Kerr spacetime. Two new quantities, the length of the shadow boundary and the local curvature radius are introduced. Each shadow can be uniquely determined by these two quantities. For the black hole case, the result shows that we can constrain the black hole spin and the angular coordinate of the observer only by measuring the maximum and minimum of the curvature radius. While for the naked singularity case, we adopt the length parameter and the maximum of the curvature radius. Th…
We prove two theorems, announced in hep-th/0108170, for static spacetimes that solve Einstein's equation with negative cosmological constant. The first is a general structure theorem for spacetimes obeying a certain convexity condition near infinity, analogous to the structure theorems of Cheeger and Gromoll for manifolds of non-negative Ricci curvature. For spacetimes with Ricci-flat conformal boundary, the convexity condition is associated with negative mass. The second theorem is a uniqueness theorem for the negative mass AdS soliton spacetime. This result lends support to the new positive …
A quantum mechanical path integral derivation is given of a thermal propagator in non-static Gui spacetime. The thermal nature of the propagator is understood in terms of homotopically non-trivial paths in the configuration space appropriate to tortoise coordinates. The connection to thermal emission from collapsing black holes is discussed.
Based on the conformal energy theorem we prove the uniqueness theorem for static higher dimensional electrically and magnetically charged black holes being the solution of Einstein (n-2)-gauge forms equations of motion. Black hole spacetime contains an asymptotically flat spacelike hypersurface with compact interior and non-degenerate components of the event horizon.
The Dirac equation in a curved spacetime depends on a field of coefficients (essentially the Dirac matrices), for which a continuum of different choices are possible. We study the conditions under which a change of the coefficient fields leads to an equivalent Hamiltonian operator H, or to an equivalent energy operator E. We do that for the standard version of the gravitational Dirac equation, and for two alternative equations based on the tensor representation of the Dirac fields. The latter equations may be defined when the spacetime is four-dimensional, noncompact, and admits a spinor struc…
In the context of LLM geometries, we show that superpositions of classical coherent states of trivial topology can give rise to new classical limits where the topology of spacetime has changed. We argue that this phenomenon implies that neither the topology nor the geometry of spacetime can be the result of an operator measurement. We address how to reconcile these statements with the usual semiclassical analysis of low energy effective field theory for gravity.
We present a systematic study of the moduli space of asymptotically flat, supersymmetric and biaxisymmetric black hole solutions to five-dimensional minimal supergravity. Previously, it has been shown that such solutions must be multi-centred solutions with a Gibbons-Hawking base. In this paper we perform a full analysis of three-centred solutions with a single black hole, for which there are seven regular black hole solutions. We find that four of these can have the same conserved charges as the BMPV black hole. These consist of a black lens with L(3,1) horizon topology and three distinct fam…
In this paper we compute the corrections to the black-body force (BBF) potential due to spacetime geometry and topology. This recently discovered attractive force on neutral atoms is caused by the thermal radiation emitted from black bodies and here we investigate it in relativistic gravitational systems with spherical and cylindrical symmetries. For some astrophysical objects we find that the corrected black-body potential is greater than the flat case, showing that this kind of correction can be quite relevant when curved spaces are considered. Then we consider four cases: The Schwarzschild …
A quantum scalar field in a patch of a fixed, topology-changing, $1+1$ dimensional "trousers" spacetime is studied using the Sorkin-Johnston formalism. The isometry group of the patch is the dihedral group, the symmetry group of the square. The theory is shown to be pathological in a way that can be interpreted as the topology change giving rise to a divergent energy, in agreement with previous results. In contrast to previous results, it is shown that the infinite energy is localised not only on the future light cone of the topology changing singularity, but also on the past cone, due to the …
We study axisymmetric self-gravitating non-linear $σ$-model in five-dimensional spacetime admitting three commutating Killing vector fields. We show that the only asymptotically flat black ring solution with a regular event horizon is the black ring characterized by mass and two angular momenta with constant mapping.
We discuss the topological nature of the boundary spacetime, the conformal infinity of the ambient cosmological metric. Due to the existence of a homothetic group, the bounding spacetime must be equipped not with the usual Euclidean metric topology but with the Zeeman fine topology. This then places severe constraints to the convergence of a sequence of causal curves and the extraction of a limit curve, and also to our ability to formulate conditions for singularity formation.
Using Monte-Carlo computer simulations, we study the impact of matter fields on the geometry of a typical quantum universe in the CDT model of lattice quantum gravity. The quantum universe has the size of a few Planck lengths and the spatial topology of a three-torus. The matter fields are multi-component scalar fields taking values in a torus with circumference $δ$ in each spatial direction, which acts as a new parameter in the CDT model. Changing $δ$, we observe a phase transition caused by the scalar field. This discovery may have important consequences for quantum universes with non-trivia…
Thin shell wormholes are constructed by joining two asymptotically flat spacetimes along their inner boundaries. The junction conditions imposed on the spacetimes specify the equation of state of the matter called thin shell distributed along the joined boundaries. Barcelo and Visser (2000) reported that spherically symmetric thin shell wormholes have their shells, namely the wormhole throats, on the photon spheres if the wormholes are $Z_2$-symmetric across the throats and the shells are of pure tension. In this paper, first, we consider general joined spacetimes (JSTs) and show that any $Z_2…
The quantum lightcone fluctuations in flat spacetimes with compactified spatial dimensions or with boundaries are examined. The discussion is based upon a model in which the source of the underlying metric fluctuations is taken to be quantized linear perturbations of the gravitational field. General expressions are derived, in the transverse trace-free gauge, for the summation of graviton polarization tensors, and for vacuum graviton two-point functions. Because of the fluctuating light cone, the flight time of photons between a source and a detector may be either longer or shorter than the li…
The formalism of Greensite for treating the spacetime signature as a dynamical degree of freedom induced by quantum fields is considered for spacetimes with nontrivial topology of the kind ${\bf R}^{D-1} \times {\bf T}^1$, for varying $D$. It is shown that a dynamical origin for the Lorentzian signature is possible in the five-dimensional space ${\bf R}^4 \times {\bf T}^1$ with small torus radius (periodic boundary conditions), as well as in four-dimensional space with trivial topology. Hence, the possibility exists that the early universe might have been of the Kaluza-Klein type, \ie multidim…
We investigate the stability of a new warped black string with nontrivial topologies in five-dimensional Anti-de Sitter spacetime. After studying the linear gravitational perturbation, we find that this black string is unstable when the Kaluza-Klein mass falls in a certain range and the instability exists for all topological spacetimes.
We study the role that both vacuum fluctuations and vacuum entanglement of a scalar field play in identifying the spacetime topology, which is not prescribed from first principles---neither in general relativity or quantum gravity. We analyze how the entanglement and observable correlations acquired between two particle detectors are sensitive to the spatial topology of spacetime. We examine the detector's time evolution to all orders in perturbation theory and then study the phenomenon of vacuum entanglement harvesting in Minkowski spacetime and two flat topologically distinct spacetimes cons…
Topology change -- the creation of a disconnected baby universe -- due to black hole collapse may resolve the information loss paradox. Evolution from an early time Cauchy surface to a final surface which includes a slice of the disconnected region can be unitary and consistent with conventional quantum mechanics. We discuss the issue of cluster decomposition, showing that any violations thereof are likely to be unobservably small. Topology change is similar to the black hole remnant scenario and only requires assumptions about the behavior of quantum gravity in planckian regimes. It does not …
Motivated by recent studies on the uniqueness or non-uniqueness of higher dimensional black hole spacetime, we investigate the asymptotic structure of spatial infinity in n-dimensional spacetimes($n \geq 4$). It turns out that the geometry of spatial infinity does not have maximal symmetry due to the non-trivial Weyl tensor {}^{(n-1)}C_{abcd} in general. We also address static spacetime and its multipole moments P_{a_1 a_2 ... a_s}. Contrasting with four dimensions, we stress that the local structure of spacetimes cannot be unique under fixed a multipole moments in static vacuum spacetimes. Fo…
We show that Wang's proof of uniqueness of Anti-de Sitter spacetime can be adapted to provide uniqueness results for strictly static asymptotically locally hyperbolic vacuum metrics with toroidal infinity, and to prove negativity of the free energy $E-TS$ of asymptotically AdS black holes with higher-genus horizons.
Motivated by recent proposals for a de Sitter version of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we give some topological restrictions on spacetimes of de Sitter type, i.e., spacetimes with $Λ>0$, which admit a regular past and/or future conformal boundary. For example we show that if $M^{n+1}$, $n \ge 2$, is a globally hyperbolic spacetime obeying suitable energy conditions, which is of de Sitter type, with a conformal boundary to both the past and future, then if one of these boundaries is compact, it must have finite fundamental group and its conformal class must contain a metric of positive scalar cur…
We study the Lagrangian description of chiral bosons, p-form gauge fields with (anti-)self-dual gauge field strengths, in D=2p+2 dimensional spacetime of nontrivial topology. We show that the manifestly Lorentz and diffeomorphism invariant Pasti-Sorokin-Tonin (PST) approach is consistent and produces the (anti-)self-duality equation also in topologically nontrivial spacetime. We discuss in what circumstances the nontrivial topology makes difference between two disconnected, `da-timelike' and `da-spacelike' branches of the PST system, the gauge fixed version of which are described by not manife…
We prove uniqueness, existence, and regularity results for maximal hypersurfaces in spacetimes with a conformal completion at timelike infinity and asymptotically constant scalar curvature, as relevant for asymptotically AdS spacetimes. This work is dedicated to Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat on the occasion of her upcoming 99th birthday.
