Thin shell wormholes are constructed by joining two asymptotically flat spacetimes along their inner boundaries. The junction conditions imposed on the spacetimes specify the equation of state of the matter called thin shell distributed along the joined boundaries. Barcelo and Visser (2000) reported that spherically symmetric thin shell wormholes have their shells, namely the wormhole throats, on the photon spheres if the wormholes are $Z_2$-symmetric across the throats and the shells are of pure tension. In this paper, first, we consider general joined spacetimes (JSTs) and show that any $Z_2$-symmetric pure-tensional JST (Z2PTJST) of $Λ$-vacuum has its shell on a photon surface, a generalized object of photon spheres, without assuming any other symmetries. The class of Z2PTJSTs also includes, for example, brane world models with the shells being the branes we live in. Second, we investigate the shell stability of Z2PTJSTs by analyzing the stability of the corresponding photon surfaces. Finally, applying the uniqueness theorem of photon spheres by Cederbaum (2015), we establish the uniqueness theorem of static wormholes of Z2PTJST.
Based on the rigid positive energy theorem we proved the uniqueness of static spherically symmetric traversable wormholes with two asymptotically flat ends, being the higher-dimensional solutions of Einstein scalar phantom field. The proof is valid under the auxiliary condition imposed on wormhole mass and scalar charge.
We prove a uniqueness theorem for traversable wormhole solutions in the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity with a phantom scalar field and a possible phantom electromagnetic field. In a certain region of the parameter space, determined by the asymptotic values of the scalar field and the lapse function, the regular wormholes are completely specified by their mass, scalar charge and electric charge. The argument is based on the positive energy theorem applied on an appropriate conformally transformed Riemannian space.
The uniqueness of static spherically symmetric traversable wormholes with two asymptotically flat ends, subject to the higher-dimensional solutions of Einstein-Maxwell-phantom dilaton field equations was proved. We considered the case of an arbitrary dilaton coupling constant. Conformal positive energy theorem plays the key role in the considerations.
In the present paper we prove a uniqueness theorem for the regular static, traversable wormhole solutions to the Einstein-phantom scalar field theory with two asymptotically flat regions (ends). We show that when a certain condition on the asymptotic values of the scalar field is imposed such solutions are uniquely specified by their mass $M$ and the scalar charge $D$.The main arguments in the proof are based on the positive energy theorem.
It is well known that a Morris-Thorne wormhole can only be held open by violating the null energy condition, physically realizable by the use of "exotic matter." Unfortunately, even a small or moderately-sized wormhole would have a radial tension equal to that of the interior of a massive neutron star. So outside a neutron-star setting, such an outcome is problematical at best, calling for more than an appeal to exotic matter whose introduction had a completely different objective and with possibly different outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to account for the enormous radial tension in t…
The embedding of a curved spacetime in a higher-dimensional flat spacetime has continued to be a topic of interest in the general theory of relativity, as exemplified by the induced-matter theory. This paper deals with spacetimes of embedding class one, i.e., spacetimes that can be embedded in a five-dimensional flat spacetime. Einstein's theory allows the fifth dimension to be either spacelike or timelike. By assuming the latter, this paper addresses two fundamental issues concerning Morris-Thorne wormholes, the origin of exotic matter and the frequently inexplicable enormous radial tension a…
We discuss the possibility of constructing stable, static, spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat Lorentzian wormhole solutions in General Relativity coupled to a generalized Galileon field $π$. Assuming that Minkowski space-time is obtained at $\partial π=0$, we find that there is tension between the properties of the energy-momentum tensor required to support a wormhole (violation of average null energy conditions) and stability of the Galileon perturbations about the putative solution (absence of ghosts and gradient instabilities). In 3-dimensional space-time, this tension is strong eno…
In this paper we show that wormholes in (2+1) dimensions (3-D) cannot be sourced solely by both Casimir energy and tension, differently from what happens in a 4-D scenario, in which case it has been shown recently, by the direct computation of the exact shape and redshift functions of a wormhole solution, that this is possible. We show that in a 3-D spacetime the same is not true since the arising of at least an event horizon is inevitable. We do the analysis for massive and massless fermions, as well as for scalar fields, considering quasi-periodic boundary conditions and find that a possibil…
We study solutions obtained via applying dualities and complexifications to the vacuum Weyl metrics generated by massive rods and by point masses. Rescaling them and extending to complex parameter values yields axially symmetric vacuum solutions containing conical singularities along circles that can be viewed as singular matter sources. These solutions have wormhole topology with several asymptotic regions interconnected by throats and their sources can be viewed as thin rings of negative tension encircling the throats. For a particular value of the ring tension the geometry becomes exactly f…
We review recent works on the possibility for eternal existence of thin-shell wormholes on Einstein and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We introduce thin-shell wormholes that are categorized into a class of traversable wormhole solutions. After that, we discuss stable thin-shell wormholes with negative-tension branes in Reissner-Nordström-(anti) de Sitter spacetimes in $d$ dimensional Einstein gravity. Imposing $Z_2$ symmetry, we construct and classify traversable static thin-shell wormholes in spherical, planar and hyperbolic symmetries. It is found that the spherical wormholes are stable agai…
We show that, contrary to what is usually claimed in the literature, the zero mass limit of Kerr spacetime is not flat Minkowski space but a spacetime whose geometry is only locally flat. This limiting spacetime, as the Kerr spacetime itself, contains two asymptotic regions and hence cannot be topologically trivial. It also contains a curvature singularity, because the power-law singularity of the Weyl tensor vanishes in the limit but there remains a distributional contribution of the Ricci tensor. This spacetime can be interpreted as a wormhole sourced by a negative tension ring. We also exte…
We analytically study the non-linear stability of a spherically symmetric wormhole supported by an infinitesimally thin brane of negative tension, which has been devised by Barcelo and Visser. We consider a situation in which a thin spherical shell composed of dust falls into an initially static wormhole; The dust shell plays a role of the non-linear disturbance. The self-gravity of the falling dust shell is completely taken into account through Israel's formalism of the metric junction. When the dust shell goes through the wormhole, it necessarily collides with the brane supporting the wormho…
We use Euclidean path integrals to explore the set of bulk asymptotically AdS spacetimes with good CFT duals. We consider simple bottom-up models of bulk physics defined by Einstein-Hilbert gravity coupled to thin domain walls and restrict to solutions with spherical symmetry. The cosmological constant is allowed to change across the domain wall, modeling more complicated Einstein-scalar systems where the scalar potential has multiple minima. In particular, the cosmological constant can become positive in the interior. However, in the above context, we show that inflating bubbles are never pro…
