Inspired by methods of N. P. Smart, we describe an algorithm to determine all Picard curves over Q with good reduction away from 3, up to Q-isomorphism. A correspondence between the isomorphism classes of such curves and certain quintic binary forms possessing a rational linear factor is established. An exhaustive list of integral models is determined, and an application to a question of Ihara is discussed.
We describe normal forms and minimal models of Picard curves, discussing various arithmetic aspects of these. We determine all so-called special Picard curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ with good reduction outside 2 and 3, and use this to determine the smallest possible conductor a special Picard curve may have. We also collect a database of Picard curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ of small conductor.
We study the conductor of Picard curves over $\mathbb{Q}$, which is a product of local factors. Our results are based on previous results on stable reduction of superelliptic curves that allow to compute the conductor exponent $f_p$ at the primes $p$ of bad reduction. A careful analysis of the possibilities of the stable reduction at $p$ yields restrictions on the conductor exponent $f_p$. We prove that Picard curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ always have bad reduction at $p=3$, with $f_3\geq 4$. As an application we discuss the question of finding Picard curves with small conductor.
We study non-isotrivial families of $K3$ surfaces in positive characteristic $p$ whose geometric generic fibers satisfy $ρ\geq21-2h$ and $h\geq3$, where $ρ$ is the Picard number and $h$ is the height of the formal Brauer group. We show that, under a mild assumption on the characteristic of the base field, they have potential supersingular reduction. Our methods rely on Maulik's results on moduli spaces of $K3$ surfaces and the construction of sections of powers of Hodge bundles due to van der Geer and Katsura. For large $p$ and each $2\leq{h}\leq10$, using deformation theory and Taelman's meth…
We give a bound on the primes dividing the denominators of invariants of Picard curves of genus 3 with complex multiplication. Unlike earlier bounds in genus 2 and 3, our bound is based not on bad reduction of curves, but on a very explicit type of good reduction. This approach simultaneously yields a simplification of the proof, and much sharper bounds. In fact, unlike all previous bounds for genus 3, our bound is sharp enough for use in explicit constructions of Picard curves.
We use methods for computing Picard numbers of reductions of K3 surfaces in order to study the decomposability of Jacobians over number fields and the variance of Mordell-Weil ranks of families of Jacobians over different ground fields. For example, we give examples of surfaces whose Picard numbers jump in rank at all primes of good reduction using Mordell-Weil groups of Jacobians and show that the genus of curves over number fields whose Jacobians are isomorphic to a product of elliptic curves satisfying certain reduction conditions is bounded. The isomorphism result addresses the number fiel…
We study the reduction of Picard modular surfaces modulo an inert prime, mod p and p-adic modular forms. We construct a theta operator on such modular forms and study its poles and its effect on Fourier-Jacobi expansions.
We study the sequence of zeta functions $Z(C_p,T)$ of a generic Picard curve $C:y^3=f(x)$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ at primes $p$ of good reduction for $C$. We define a degree 9 polynomial $ψ_f\in \mathbb{Q}[x]$ such that the splitting field of $ψ_f(x^3/2)$ is the $2$-torsion field of the Jacobian of $C$. We prove that, for all but a density zero subset of primes, the zeta function $Z(C_p,T)$ is uniquely determined by the Cartier-Manin matrix $A_p$ of $C$ modulo $p$ and the splitting behavior modulo $p$ of $f$ and $ψ_f$; we also show that for primes $\equiv 1 \pmod{3}$ the matrix $A_p$ suffice…
We study the behavior of geometric Picard ranks of K3 surfaces over the rationals under reduction modulo primes. We compute these ranks for reductions of smooth quartic surfaces modulo all primes $p<2^{16}$ in several representative examples and investigate the resulting statistics.
We study the good reduction modulo p of K3 surfaces with complex multiplication. If a K3 surface with complex multiplication has good reduction, we calculate the Picard number and the height of the formal Brauer group of the reduction. Moreover, if the reduction is supersingular, we calculate its Artin invariant under some assumptions. Our results generalize some results of Shimada for K3 surfaces with Picard number 20. Our methods rely on the main theorem of complex multiplication for K3 surfaces by Rizov, an explicit description of the Breuil-Kisin modules associated with Lubin-Tate characte…
Let $E$ be a quadratic imaginary field and let $p$ be a prime which is inert in $E.$ We study three types of Picard modular surfaces in positive characteristic $p$ and the morphisms between them. The first Picard surface, denoted $S$, parametrizes triples $(A,ϕ,ι)$ comprised of an abelian threefold $A$ with an action $ι$ of the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{E}$, and a principal polarization $ϕ$. The second surface, $S_{0}(p)$, parametrizes, in addition, a suitably restricted choice of a subgroup $H\subset A[p]$ of rank $p^{2}$. The third Picard surface, $\widetilde{S}$, parametrizes triples $…
Fix a number field $k$ and a rational prime $\ell$. We consider abelian varieties whose $\ell$-power torsion generates a pro-$\ell$ extension of $k(μ_{\ell^\infty})$ which is unramified away from $\ell$. It is a necessary, but not generally sufficient, condition that such varieties have good reduction away from $\ell$. In the special case of $\ell = 2$, we demonstrate that for abelian surfaces $A/\mathbb{Q}$, good reduction away from $\ell$ does suffice. The result is extended to elliptic curves and abelian surfaces over certain number fields unramified away from $\{2,\infty\}$. An explicit ex…
We list the elliptic curves defined over $Q(\sqrt 5)$ with good reduction away from 2. There are 368 isomorphism classes. We give a global minimal model for each class.
For a K3 surface of finite height over a field of odd characteristic, there exists a smooth lifting to the ring of Witt vectors such that the reduction map from the Picard group of the generic fiber to the Picard group of the special fiber is isomorphic. In this paper, using this result, we give a criterion for a K3 surface of finite height over a field of odd characteristic to be an Enriques K3 surface or to be a K3 surface in terms of the Neron-Severi lattice. Then we show every Kummer surface has an Enriques involution. We also give a classification of K3 surfaces of Picard rank of 20 over …
We give bounds on the primes of geometric bad reduction for curves of genus three of primitive CM type in terms of the CM orders. In the case of genus one, there are no primes of geometric bad reduction because CM elliptic curves are CM abelian varieties, which have potential good reduction everywhere. However, for genus at least two, the curve can have bad reduction at a prime although the Jacobian has good reduction. Goren and Lauter gave the first bound in the case of genus two. In the cases of hyperelliptic and Picard curves, our results imply bounds on primes appearing in the denominators…
Let $C/K$ be a smooth plane quartic over a discrete valuation field. We characterize the type of reduction (i.e. smooth plane quartic, hyperelliptic genus 3 curve or bad) over $K$ in terms of the existence of a special plane quartic model and, over $\bar{K}$, in terms of the valuations of certain algebraic invariants of $C$ when the characteristic of the residue field is not $2,\,3,\,5$ or $7$. On the way, we gather several results of general interest on geometric invariant theory over an arbitrary ring $R$ in the spirit of (Seshadri 1977). For instance when $R$ is a discrete valuation ring, w…
Enriques surfaces are minimal surfaces of Kodaira dimension $0$ with $b_{2}=10$. If we work with a field of characteristic away from $2$, Enriques surfaces admit double covers which are K3 surfaces. In this paper, we prove the Shafarevich conjecture for Enriques surfaces by reducing the problem to the case of K3 surfaces. In our formulation of the Shafarevich conjecture, we use the notion "admitting a cohomological good K3 cover", which includes not only good reduction but also flower pot reduction.
