We consider the one-dimensional $XX$-model in a quasi-periodic transverse-field described by the Harper potential, which is equivalent to a tight-binding model of spinless fermions with a quasi-periodic chemical potential. For weak transverse field (chemical potential), $h<h_c$, the excitations (fermions) are delocalized, but become localized for $h>h_c$. We study the non-equilibrium relaxation of the system by applying two protocols: a sudden change of $h$ (quench dynamics) and a slow change of $h$ in time (adiabatic dynamics). For a quench into the delocalized (localized) phase, the entanglement entropy grows linearly (saturates) and the order parameter decreases exponentially (has a finite limiting value). For a critical quench the entropy increases algebraically with time, whereas the order parameter decreases with a stretched-exponential. The density of defects after an adiabatic field change through the critical point is shown to scale with a power of the rate of field change and a scaling relation for the exponent is derived.
We study the hopping transport of a quantum particle through randomly diluted percolation clusters in two dimensions realized both on the square and triangular lattices. We investigate the nature of localization of the particle by calculating the transmission coefficient as a function of energy (-2 < E < 2 in units of the hopping integral in the tight-binding Hamiltonian) and disorder, q (probability that a given site of the lattice is not available to the particle). Our study based on finite size scaling suggests the existence of delocalized states that depends on energy and amount of disorde…
As opposed to random disorder, which localizes single-particle wave-functions in 1D at arbitrarily small disorder strengths, there is a localization-delocalization transition for quasi-periodic disorder in the 1D Aubry-André model at a finite disorder strength. On the single-particle level, many properties of the ground-state critical behavior have been revealed by applying a real-space renormalization-group scheme; the critical properties are determined solely by the continued fraction expansion of the incommensurate frequency of the disorder. Here, we investigate the many-particle localizati…
We study the statistics of eigenvectors in correlated random band matrix models. These models are characterized by two parameters, the band width B(N) of a Hermitian N times N matrix and the correlation parameter C(N) describing correlations of matrix elements along diagonal lines. The correlated band matrices show a much richer phenomenology than models without correlation as soon as the correlation parameter scales sufficiently fast with matrix size. In particular, for B(N) and C(N) increasing like the square root of N the model shows a localization-delocalization transition of the quantum H…
We study many-body localization (MBL) and delocalization from the perspective of integrals of motion (IOMs). MBL can be understood phenomenologically through the existence of macroscopically many localized IOMs. However, IOMs exist for all many-body systems, and non-localized IOMs determine properties on the ergodic side of the MBL transition too. Here we explore their properties using our method of displacement transformations. We show how different quantities can be calculated using the IOMs as an expansion in the number of operators. For all values of disorder the typical IOMs are localized…
We consider the spatiotemporal evolution of a wave packet in disordered nonlinear Schrödinger and anharmonic oscillator chains. In the absence of nonlinearity all eigenstates are spatially localized with an upper bound on the localization length (Anderson localization). Nonlinear terms in the equations of motion destroy Anderson localization due to nonintegrability and deterministic chaos. At least a finite part of an initially localized wave packet will subdiffusively spread without limits. We analyze the details of this spreading process. We compare the evolution of single site, single mode …
We present a theory of Anderson localization on a one-dimensional lattice with translation-invariant hopping. We find by analytical calculation, the localization length for arbitrary finite-range hopping in the single propagating channel regime. Then by examining the convergence of the localization length, in the limit of infinite hopping range, we revisit the problem of localization criteria in this model and investigate the conditions under which it can be violated. Our results reveal possibilities of having delocalized states by tuning the long-range hopping.
We consider a two-parameter one-dimensional Hamiltonian with uncorrelated diagonal disorder and {\it non-random} long-range inter-site interaction $J_{mn}=J/|m-n|^μ$. The model is critical at $1<μ<3/2$ and reveals the localization-delocalization transition with respect to the disorder magnitude. To detect the transition we analyze level and wave function statistics. It is demonstrated also that in the marginal case ($μ= 3/2$) all states are localized.
We consider prototype configurations for quasi-one-dimensional stochastic networks that exhibit negative mobility, meaning that current decreases or even reversed as the bias is increased. We then explore the implications of disorder. In particular we ask whether lower and upper bias thresholds restrict the possibility to witness non-zero current (sliding and anti-sliding transitions respectively), and whether a delocalization effect manifest itself (crossover from over-damped to under-damped relaxation). In the latter context detailed analysis of the relaxation spectrum as a function of the b…
In the previous paper [PRE 101,032210(2020)], localization and delocalization phenomena in the polychromatically perturbed Anderson map (AM) were elucidated mainly from the viewpoint of localization-delocalization transition (LDT) on the increase of the perturbation strength $ε$. In this paper, we mainly investigate the dependency of the phenomena on the disorder strength $W$ ($W-$dependence) in the AM with a characteristic disorder strength $W^*$. In the completely localized region the $W-$dependence and $ε-$dependence of the localization length show characteristic behavior similar to those r…
Based on the random dimer model, we study correlated disorder in a one dimensional system driven by a strong AC field. As the correlations in a random system may generate extended states and enhance transport in DC fields, we explore the role that AC fields have on these properties. We find that similar to ordered structures, AC fields renormalize the effective hopping constant to a smaller value, and thus help to localize a state. We find that AC fields control then a localization-delocalization transition in a given one dimensional systems with correlated disorder. The competition between ba…
We investigate localization properties of electron eigenstates in one-dimensional (1d) systems with long-range correlated diagonal disorder. Numerical studies on the localization length $ξ$ of eigenstates demonstrate the existence of the localization-delocalization transition in 1d systems and elucidate non-trivial behavior of $ξ$ as a function of the disorder strength. The critical exponent $ν$ for localization length is extracted for various values of parameters characterizing the disorder, revealing that every $ν$ disobeys the Harris criterion $ν> 2/d$.
We study two-dimensional tensorial elastic wave transport in densely fractured media and document transitions from propagation to diffusion and to localization/delocalization. For large fracture stiffness, waves are propagative at the scale of the system. For small stiffness, multiple scattering prevails, such that waves are diffusive in disconnected fracture networks, and localized in connected ones with a strong multifractality of the intensity field. A reentrant delocalization is found in well-connected networks due to energy leakage via evanescent waves and cascades of mode conversion.
The localization behavior of the one-dimensional Anderson model with correlated and uncorrelated purely off-diagonal disorder is studied. Using the transfer matrix method, we derive an analytical expression for the localization length at the band center in terms of the pair correlation function. It is proved that for long-range correlated hopping disorder, a localization-delocalization transition occurs at the critical Hurst exponent H_c= 1/2 when the variance of the logarithm of hopping "σ_{\ln(t)}" is kept fixed with the system size N. Based on numerical calculations, finite size scaling rel…
We study numerically the disorder-induced localization-delocalization phase transitions that occur for mass and spring constant disorder in a three-dimensional cubic lattice with harmonic couplings. We show that, while the phase diagrams exhibit regions of stable and unstable waves, the universality of the transitions is the same for mass and spring constant disorder throughout all the phase boundaries. The combined value for the critical exponent of the localization lengths of $ν= 1.550^{+0.020}_{-0.017}$ confirms the agreement with the universality class of the standard electronic Anderson m…
The generalization of the dimer model on a two-leg ladder is defined and investigated both, analytically and numerically. For the closed system we calculate the Landauer resistance analytically and found the presence of the point of delocalization at the band center which is confirmed by the numerical calculations of the Lyapunov exponent. We calculate also analytically the localization length index and present the numerical investigations of the density of states (DOS). For the open counterpart of this model the distribution of the Wigner delay times is calculated numerically. It is shown how…
We propose a realization of the one-dimensional random dimer model and certain N-leg generalizations using cold atoms in an optical lattice. We show that these models exhibit multiple delocalization energies that depend strongly on the symmetry properties of the corresponding Hamiltonian and we provide analytical and numerical results for the localization length as a function of energy. We demonstrate that the N-leg systems possess similarities with their 1D ancestors but are demonstrably distinct. The existence of critical delocalization energies leads to dips in the momentum distribution whi…
A new type of delocalization induced by coherent harmonic perturbations in one-dimensional Anderson-localized disordered systems is investigated. With only a few $M$ frequencies a normal diffusion is realized, but the transition to localized state always occurs as the perturbation strength is weakened below a critical value. The nature of the transition qualitatively follows the Anderson transition (AT) if the number of degrees of freedom $M+1$ is regarded as the spatial dimension $d$, but the critical dimension is not $d=M+1-2$ of the ordinary AT but $d=3$.
When one applies a type of non-Hermitian effect, constant imaginary vector potential, to disordered systems, delocalization is induced even in two or lower dimension. By using the non-Hermitian induced transition as a probe, We propose a new procedure of estimating localization in arbitrary-dimensional systems. By examining numerically the two-dimensional non-Hermitian tight-biding model with onsite disorder, it is shown that the failure of absorbing the non-Hermitian effect, namely the breakdown of the imaginary gauge transformation, characterize the inverse localization length near the band …
We numerically study the single particle localization and delocalization phenomena of an initially localized wave packet in the kicked Harper model (KHM) and Harper model subjected to quasi-periodic perturbation composed of $M-$modes. Both models are localized in the monochromatically perturbed case $M=1$. KHM shows localization-delocalization transition (LDT) above $M\geq2$ as increase of the perturbation strength $\eps$. In contrast, in a time-continuous Harper model with the perturbation, it is confirmed that the localization persists for $M=2$ and the LDT occurs for $M\geq 3$. Furthermore,…
Using the supersymmetry technique, we study the localization-delocalization transition in quasi-one-dimensional non-Hermitian systems with a direction. In contrast to chains, our model captures the diffusive character of carriers' motion at short distances. We calculate the joint probability of complex eigenvalues and some other correlation functions. We find that the transition is abrupt and occurs as a result of an interplay between two saddle-points in the free energy functional.
I discuss whether localization in the two dimensional continuum can be stable in the presence of short range interactions. I conclude that, for an impurity model of disorder, if the system is prepared below a critical temperature $T < T_c$, then perturbation theory about the localized phase converges almost everywhere. As a result, the system is at least asymptotically localized, and perhaps even truly many body localized, depending on how certain rare regions behave. Meanwhile, for $T > T_c$, perturbation theory fails to converge, which I interpret as interaction mediated delocalization. I ca…
Localization-delocalization transition in a discrete Anderson nonlinear Schrödinger equation with disorder is shown to be a critical phenomenon $-$ similar to a percolation transition on a disordered lattice, with the nonlinearity parameter thought as the control parameter. In vicinity of the critical point the spreading of the wave field is subdiffusive in the limit $t\rightarrow+\infty$. The second moment grows with time as a powerlaw $\propto t^α$, with $α$ exactly 1/3. This critical spreading finds its significance in some connection with the general problem of transport along separatrices…
We use a transfer-matrix method to study the localization properties of vibrations in a `mass and spring' model with simple cubic lattice structure. Disorder is applied as a box-distribution to the force-constants $k$ of the springs. We obtain the reduced localization lengths $Λ_M$ from calculated Lyapunov exponents for different system widths to roughly locate the squared critical transition frequency $ω_{\text{c}}^2$. The data is finite-size scaled to acquire the squared critical transition frequency of $ω_{\text{c}}^2 = 12.54 \pm 0.03$ and a critical exponent of $ν= 1.55 \pm 0.002$.
In two-dimensional quantum site-percolation square lattice models, the von Neumann entropy is extensively studied numerically. At a certain eigenenergy, the localization-delocalization transition is reflected by the derivative of von Neumann entropy which is maximal at the quantum percolation threshold $p_q$. The phase diagram of localization-delocalization transitions is deduced in the extrapolation to infinite system sizes. The non-monotonic eigenenergies dependence of $p_q$ and the lowest value $p_q\simeq0.665$ are found. At localized-delocalized transition points, the finite scaling analys…
We investigate the effect of a two-level jump process or random telegraph noise on a square wave driven tight-binding lattice. In the absence of the noise, the system is known to exhibit dynamical localization for specific ratios of the amplitude and the frequency of the drive. We obtain an exact expression for the probability propagator to study the stability of dynamical localization against telegraph noise. Our analysis shows that in the presence of noise, a proper tuning of the noise parameters destroys dynamical localization of the clean limit in one case, while it induces dynamical local…
We consider d dimensional systems which are localized in the absence of interactions, but whose single particle (SP) localization length diverges near a discrete set of (single-particle) energies, with critical exponent ν. This class includes disordered systems with intrinsic- or symmetry-protected- topological bands, such as disordered integer quantum Hall insulators. In the absence of interactions, such marginally localized systems exhibit anomalous properties intermediate between localized and extended including: vanishing DC conductivity but sub-diffusive dynamics, and fractal entanglement…
Localization and delocalization of quantum diffusion in time-continuous one-dimensional Anderson model perturbed by the quasi-periodic harmonic oscillations of $M$ colors is investigated systematically, which has been partly reported by the preliminary letter [PRE {\bf 103}, L040202(2021)]. We investigate in detail the localization-delocalization characteristics of the model with respect to three parameters: the disorder strength $W$, the perturbation strength $ε$ and the number of the colors $M$ which plays the similar role of spatial dimension. In particular, attentions are focused on the pr…
In this paper, we investigate the driven dynamics of the localization transition in the non-Hermitian Aubry-André model with the periodic boundary condition. Depending on the strength of the quasi-periodic potential $λ$, this model undergoes a localization-delocalization phase transition. We find that the localization length $ξ$ satisfies $ξ\sim \varepsilon^{-ν}$ with $\varepsilon$ being the distance from the critical point and $ν=1$ being a universal critical exponent independent of the non-Hermitian parameter. In addition, from the finite-size scaling of the energy gap between the ground sta…
In the present work, we investigated the correlation-induced localization-delocalization transition in the one-dimensional tight-binding model with fractal disorder. We obtained a phase transition diagram from localized to extended states based on the normalized localization length by controlling the correlation and the disorder strength of the potential. In addition, the transition of the diffusive property of wavepacket dynamics is shown around the critical point.
We study the phenomenon of localization and delocalization in a circuit-QED network with connectivity varying from finite-range to all-to-all coupling. We find a fascinating interplay between interactions and connectivity. In particular, we consider (i) Harmonic (ii) Jaynes-Cummings and (iii) Bose-Hubbard networks. We start with the initial condition where one of the nodes in the network is populated and then let it evolve in time. The time dynamics and steady state characterize the features of localization (self-trapping) in these large-scale networks. For the case of Harmonic networks, exact…
We study Anderson localization of massless Dirac electrons in two dimensions in one-dimensional random scalar and vector potentials theoretically for two different cases, in which the scalar and vector potentials are either uncorrelated or correlated. From the Dirac equation, we deduce the effective wave impedance, using which we derive the condition for total transmission and those for delocalization in our random models analytically. Based on the invariant imbedding theory, we also develop a numerical method to calculate the localization length exactly for arbitrary strengths of disorder. In…
Electron localization property of a random chain changing under the influence of a constant electric field has been studied. We have adopted the multifractal scaling formalism to explore the possible localization behavior in the system. We observe that the possible localization behavior with the increase of electric field is not systematic and shows strong instabilities associated with the local probability variation over the length of the chain. The multifractal scaling study captures the localization aspects along with strong instability when the electric field is changed by infinitesimal st…
We study the localization properties of disordered semiconductor superlattices driven by ac-fields. The localization length of the electrons in the superlattice increases when the frequency of the driving field is smaller than the miniband width. We show that there is an optimal value of the amplitude of the driving field for which the localization length of the system is maximal. This maximum localization length increases with the inverse of the driving frequency.
The one dimensional dimer model is investigated and the localization length calculated exactly. The presence of delocalized states at $E_c = ε_{a,b}$ of two possible values of the chemical potential in case of $\midε_a-ε_b\mid \leq 2 $ is confirmed and the corresponding indices of the localization length were calculated. The singular integral equation connecting the density of states with the inverse localization length is solved and the analytic expression for the density of states compared with the numerical calculations.
We study the critical behavior of the Anderson localization-delocalization transition in corner-sharing tetrahedral lattices. We compare our results obtained by three different numerical methods namely the multifractal analysis, the Green resolvent method, and the energy-level statistics which yield the singularity strength, the decay length of the wave functions, and the (integrated) energy-level distribution, respectively. From these measures a finite-size scaling approach allows us to determine the critical parameters simultaneously. With particular emphasis we calculate the propagation of …
Non-Hermiticity can destroy Anderson localization and lead to delocalization even in one dimension. However, the unified understanding of the non-Hermitian delocalization has yet to be established. Here, we develop a scaling theory of localization in non-Hermitian systems. We reveal that non-Hermiticity introduces a new scale and breaks down the one-parameter scaling, which is the central assumption of the conventional scaling theory of localization. Instead, we identify the origin of the unconventional non-Hermitian delocalization as the two-parameter scaling. Furthermore, we establish the th…
Anderson localization1 in a random system is sensitive to a distance dependence of the excitation transfer amplitude V(r). If V(r) decreases with the distance r slower than 1/r^d in a d-dimensional system then all excitations are delocalized at arbitrarily strong disordering, due to the resonant interaction of far separated quantum states (Fig. 1). At finite temperature T>0 the density of excitations is finite and they can influence each other by means of their interaction. Many body excitations involving simultaneous transitions of several single particle excitations create additional channel…
The correspondence between the real-complex transition in energy and delocalization-localization transition is well-established in a class of Aubry-Andr'e-Harper model with exponential non-Hermitian on-site potentials. In this paper, we study a generalized Aubry-Andr'e model with off-diagonal modulation and non-Hermitian on-site potential. We find that, when there exists an incommensurate off-diagonal modulation, the correspondence breaks down, although the extended phase is maintained in a wide parameter range of the strengths of the on-site potential and the off-diagonal hoppings. An additio…
We investigate the quench dynamics of a one-dimensional incommensurate lattice described by the Aubry-André model by a sudden change of the strength of incommensurate potential $Δ$ and unveil that the dynamical signature of localization-delocalization transition can be characterized by the occurrence of zero points in the Loschmit echo. For the quench process with quenching taking place between two limits of $Δ=0$ and $Δ=\infty$, we give analytical expressions of the Loschmidt echo, which indicate the existence of a series of zero points in the Loschmidt echo. For a general quench process, we …
Characterizing the delocalization transition in closed quantum systems with a many-body localized phase is a key open question in the field of nonequilibrium physics. We exploit that localization of particles as realized in Anderson and standard many-body localization (MBL) implies Fock-space localization in single-particle basis sets characterized by a real-space index. Using a recently introduced quantitative measure for Fock-space localization computed from the density distributions, the occupation distance, we systematically study its scaling behavior across delocalozation transitions and …
In this and subsequent papers, one dimensional system of Dirac fermions with a random-varying mass is studied by the transfer-matrix methods which we developed recently. We investigate the effects of nonlocal correlation of the spatial-varying Dirac mass on the delocalization transition. Especially we numerically calculate both the "typical" and "mean" localization lengths as a function of energy and the correlation length of the random mass. To this end we introduce an imaginary vector potential as suggested by Hatano and Nelson and solve the eigenvalue problem. Numerical calculations are in …
The localization in a disordered system of $N$ interacting spins coupled by the long-range anisotropic interaction $1/R^α$ is investigated using a finite size scaling in a $d=1$ -dimensional system for $N=8, 10, 12, 14$. The results supports the absence of localization in the infinite system at $α<2d$ and a scaling of a critical energy disordering $W_{c} \propto N^{2d-α}$ in agreement with the analytical theory suggesting the energy delocalization in the subset of interacting resonant pairs of spins as a precursor of the many-body delocalization. The spin relaxation rate $k$ dependence on disor…
We study the (de)localization phenomena of one-component lattice fermions in spin backgrounds. The O(3) classical spin variables on sites fluctuate thermally through the ordinary nearest-neighbor coupling. Their complex two-component (CP$^1$-Schwinger boson) representation forms a composite U(1) gauge field on bond, which acts on fermions as a fluctuating hopping amplitude in a gauge invariant manner. For the case of antiferromagnetic (AF) spin coupling, the model has close relationship with the $t$-$J$ model of strongly-correlated electron systems. We measure the unfolded level spacing distri…
We investigate the localization behavior of electrons in a random lattice which is constructed from a quasi-one-dimensional chain with large coordinate number $Z$ and rewired bonds, resembling the small-world network proposed recently but with site-energy disorder and quantum links instead of classical ones. The random rewiring of bonds in the chain with large $Z$ enhances both the topological disorder and the effective dimensionality. From the competition between disorder and dimensionality enhancement a transition from localization to delocalization is found by using the level statistics met…
A lattice model for disordered d-wave superconductors in class CI is reconsidered. Near the band-center, the lattice model can be described by Dirac fermions with several species, each of which yields WZW term for an effective action of the Goldstone mode. The WZW terms cancel out each other because of the four-fold symmetry of the model, which suggests that the quasiparticle states are localized. If the lattice model has, however, symmetry breaking terms which generate mass for any species of the Dirac fermions, remaining WZW term which avoids the cancellation can derive the system to a deloc…
Using a quantum map version of one-dimensional Anderson model, the localization-delocalization transition of quantum diffusion induced by coherent dynamical perturbation is investigated in comparison with quantum standard map. Existence of critical phenomena, which depends on the number of frequency component $M$, is demonstrated. Diffusion exponents agree with theoretical prediction for the transition, but the critical exponent of the localization length deviates from it with increase in the $M$. The critical power $ε_c$ of the normalized perturbation at the transition point remarkably decrea…
We propose a new approach to probing ergodicity and its breakdown in quantum many-body systems based on their response to a local perturbation. We study the distribution of matrix elements of a local operator between the system's eigenstates, finding a qualitatively different behaviour in the many-body localized (MBL) and ergodic phases. To characterize how strongly a local perturbation modifies the eigenstates, we introduce the parameter ${\cal G}(L)=\langle \ln (V_{nm}/δ) \rangle$, which represents a disorder-averaged ratio of a typical matrix element of a local operator $V$ to the energy le…
A new paradigm of Anderson localization caused by correlations in the long-range hopping along with uncorrelated on-site disorder is considered which requires a more precise formulation of the basic localization-delocalization principles. A new class of random Hamiltonians with translation-invariant hopping integrals is suggested and the localization properties of such models are established both in the coordinate and in the momentum spaces alongside with the corresponding level statistics. Duality of translation-invariant models in the momentum and coordinate space is uncovered and exploited …
Waves propagating in certain one-dimensional quasiperiodic lattices are known to exhibit a sharp localization transition. We theoretically predict and experimentally observe that the localization of light in one-dimensional photonic quasicrystals may be followed by a second delocalization transition for some states on increasing quasiperiodic modulation strength - an example of a reentrant transition. We further propose that this phenomenon can be qualitatively captured by a dimerized tight-binding model with long-range couplings.
We study the ergodic properties of excited states in a model of interacting fermions in quasi-one-dimensional chains subjected to a random vector potential. In the noninteracting limit, we show that arbitrarily small values of this complex off-diagonal disorder trigger localization for the whole spectrum; the divergence of the localization length in the single-particle basis is characterized by a critical exponent $ν$ which depends on the energy density being investigated. When short-range interactions are included, the localization is lost, and the system is ergodic regardless of the magnitud…
Numerical studies of amorphous silicon in harmonic approximation show that the highest 3.5% of vibrational normal modes are localized. As vibrational frequency increases through the boundary separating localized from delocalized modes, near omega_c=70meV, (the "mobility edge") there is a localization-delocalization (LD) transition, similar to a second-order thermodynamic phase transition. By a numerical study on a system with 4096 atoms, we are able to see exponential decay lengths of exact vibrational eigenstates, and test whether or not these diverge at omega_c. Results are consistent with a…
In this paper we investigate the problem of a long self-avoiding polymer chain immersed in a random medium. We find that in the limit of a very long chain and when the self-avoiding interaction is weak, the conformation of the chain consists of many ``blobs'' with connecting segments. The blobs are sections of the molecule curled up in regions of low potential in the case of a Gaussian distributed random potential or in regions of relatively low density of obstacles in the case of randomly distributed hard obstacles. We find that as the strength of the self-avoiding interaction is increased th…
We consider a continuous one dimensional model of two charged interacting particles in a random potential. The electric repulsion is strictly one dimensional and it inhibits Anderson localization. In fact, the spectrum is continuous. The case of electrical atraction is briefly studied and it shows bounded states. So, the dynamics is sign dependent for this model. We support our analytical results with numerical simulations where the effect of repulsion breaking localization is clearly observed.
In the previous work, we investigated the correlation-induced localization-delocalization transition (LDT) of the wavefunction at band center ($E=0$) in the one-dimensional tight-binding model with fractal disorder [Yamada, EPJB (2015) 88, 264]. In the present work, we study the energy ($E \neq 0$) dependence of the normalized localization length and the delocalization of the wavefunction at the different energy in the same system. The mobility edges in the LDT arise when the fractal dimension of the potential landscape is larger than the critical value depending on the disorder strength, whic…
