We report the synthesis, structure, and magnetic and transport properties of a new ternary intermetallic compound PrRhSn3 which crystallizes in LaRuSn3-type cubic structure (space group Pm-3n). At low applied fields the dc magnetic susceptibility exhibits a sharp anomaly below 6~K with an irreversible behavior in zero field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) susceptibility below 5.5 K. The ac susceptibility exhibits a frequency dependent anomaly revealing a spin-glass behavior with a freezing temperature, T_f = 4.3 K. The observation of spin-glass behavior is further supported by a very slow decay of thermo-remnant magnetization (mean relaxation time tau = 2149 s). However, a small jump at very low field in the isothermal magnetization at 2 K and a weak anomaly in the specific heat near 5.5 K reveal the presence of ferromagnetic clusters. The frequency dependence of the transition temperature T_f in the ac susceptibility obeys the Vogel-Fulcher law, nu = nu_0exp[-E_a/k_B(T_f-T_0)] with activation energy E_a/k_B = 19.1 K. This together with an intermediate value of the parameter delta T_f = Delta T_f/T_f Delta(log nu) = 0.086 provide an evidence for the formation of a cluster-glass state in PrRhSn3. The magnetic contribution of the specific heat reveals a broad Schottky-type anomaly centered around 10 K and the analysis based on the crystal electric field model indicates a singlet ground state. Further, below T_f the magnetic part of the specific heat exhibits a T^{3/2} temperature dependence. The strong influence of the crystal electric field and a T^{3/2} temperature dependence are also seen in the electrical resistivity which reveals a metallic character and a high magnetoresistance. We also obtain a surprisingly large value of Sommerfeld-Wilson ratio R_W ~ 247$.
Magnetization measurements in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 manganite show that the high-temperature long-range ferromagnetic-metallic phase transforms to antiferromagnetic-insulating phase, although a fraction of ferromagnetic-metallic phase undergoes glass-like kinetic arrest and coexists at low temperature with the equilibrium antiferromagnetic-insulating phase. We show here through resistivity measurements that the residual arrested ferromagnetic-metallic fraction can be converted to the equilibrium antiferromagnetic-insulating phase by successive annealing at higher temperatures, possibly through hetero…
We present results of dc magnetization and magnetic relaxation study showing the kinetic arrest of a first order ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition in Ce(Fe$_{0.96}$Ru$_{0.04}$)$_2$. This leads to the formation of a non-ergodic glass-like magnetic state. The onset of the magnetic-glass transformation is tracked through the slowing down of the magnetization dynamics. This glassy state is formed with the assistance of an external magnetic field and this is distinctly different from the well known 'spin-glass' state.
In the series La_{2/3-x}Tb_{x}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3}, it is known that the compositions are ferromagnetic for smaller values of x and show spin glass characteristics at larger values of x. Our studies on the magnetic properties of various compositions in the La_{2/3-x}Tb_{x}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3} series show that the cross over from ferromagnetic to spin glass region takes place above x ~ 1/8. Also, a low temperature anomaly at 30 K, observed in the ac susceptibility curves, disappears for compositions above this critical value of x. A mixed phase region coexists in the narrow compositional range 0.1 <= x <…
An attempt is made to resolve the controversy related to the low temperature phase (ground state) of the low-doped ferromagnetic (FM)- insulator(I) manganite through bulk magnetic measurements on La${_{0.9}}$Sr$_{0.1}$MnO${_3}$ sample. It is shown that the FM phase, formed out of well defined transition in the low-doped system, becomes inhomogeneous with decrease in temperature. This inhomogeniety is considered to be an outcome of the formation of orbital domain state of e$_g$-electrons having hole rich (metallic) walls separating the hole deficient (insulating) regions. The resulting complexi…
We report the magnetization study of the compound La$_{0.75}$Ba$_{0.25}$CoO$_3$ where Ba$^{2+}$ doping is just above the critical limit for percolation of ferromagnetic clusters. The field cooled (FC) and zero field cooled (ZFC) magnetization exhibit a thermomagnetic irreversibility and the ac susceptibility show a frequency dependent peak at the ferromagnetic ordering temperature (T$_C$$\approx$203~K) of the clusters. These features indicate about the presence of a non-equilibrium state below T$_C$. In the non-equilibrium state, the dynamic scaling of the imaginary part of ac susceptibility a…
The crystallographic and magnetic properties of La{0.5+delta}A{0.5-delta}Mn{0.5+epsilon}Ru{0.5-epsilon}O{3} (A= Ca, Sr, Ba) were investigated by means of neutron powder diffraction. All studied samples show the orthorhombic perovskite crystal structure, space group Pnma, with regular (Mn,Ru)O{6} octahedra and no chemical ordering of the Mn3+ and Ru4+ ions. Ferromagnetic spin structures were observed below Tc ~ 200-250 K, with an average ordered moment of ~ 1.8-2.0 Bohr magnetons per (Mn,Ru). The observation of long-range ferromagnetism and the absence of orbital ordering are rationalized in te…
We show that Pr${_{0.5}}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO${_3}$ with 2.5% Al substitution and La${_{0.5}}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO${_3}$ (LCMO) exhibit qualitatively similar and visibly anomalous M-H curves at low temperature. Magnetic field causes a broad first-order but irreversible antiferromagnetic (AF)-insulating (I) to ferromagnetic (FM)-metallic (M) transition in both and gives rise to soft FM state. However, the low temperature equilibrium state of Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.975}$Al$_{0.025}$O$_3$ (PCMAO) is FM-M whereas that of LCMO is AF-I. In both the systems the respective equilibrium phase coexists with the ot…
Using ac susceptibility, dc magnetization and heat capacity measurements, we have investigated the magnetic properties of $Cd_{0.5}Cu_{0.5}Cr_2O_4$. $Cd_{0.5}Cu_{0.5}Cr_2O_4$ has an extraordinary magnetic phase including a metastable spin-glass(SG) phase at zero field, a possible phase separation scenario of AFM/FM above $\sim 0.5T$ field, and at intermediate fields, an apparent pseudo reentrant spin-glass (RSG) plateau is observed. These phenomena are closely correlated with the pinning effect of the $Cu^{2+}$ sublattice on the frustrated lattice.
We report results of magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements down to very low fields on a single crystal of the perovskite manganite, La$_{0.82}$Ca$_{0.18}$MnO$_3$. This composition falls in the intriguing ferromagnetic insulator region of the manganite phase diagram. In contrast to earlier beliefs, our investigations reveal that the system is magnetically (and in every other sense) single-phase with a ferromagnetic ordering temperature of $\sim$ 170 K. However, this ferromagnetic state is magnetically frustrated, and the system exhibits pronounced glassy dynamics below 90 K. Based on…
We have investigated both static and dynamic magnetic properties of polycrystalline CaRu$_{1-x}$Sc$_{x}$O$_{3}$ system in order to clarify the role of Sc ions as a disorder for magnetic ordering. We have observed typical features of a ferromagnetic cluster glass state below around 40 K: (i) a broad, frequency-dependent peak in the ac magnetic susceptibility, (ii) a slow relaxation of the magnetization, and (iii) a continuous increase in the dc magnetic susceptibility in field cooling process. The composition dependence of characteristic parameters for the cluster glass state suggests that chem…
Pr0.9Sr0.1CoO2.99 sample exhibits magnetoresistivity (MR) of up to 40 % at 5 K with a strong hysteresis/memory effect. Magnetisation measurements on Pr0.9Sr0.1CoO2.99 in an applied field of 100 Oe show that, as temperature decreases, the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) magnetisation curves branch clearly at 50 K, and a cusp appears in the ZFC branch at Tcusp 20 K. Magnetisation measurements in various fields between 100 and 10,000 Oe show that both the ZFC-FC branching temperature and, Tcusp, decrease with increasing field. The magnetization-field isotherms at 5 and 10 K show hys…
We have studied (Tb$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ pyrochlores by neutron diffraction and $μ$SR at ambient and under applied pressure. Substitution of Tb for La expands the lattice and induces a change from a spin-glass like state ({\itshape x}=0) to a non collinear ferromagnet ({\itshape x}=0.2). In the ferromagnetic structure, the Tb moments orient close to their local anisotropy axis as for an ordered spin ice, while the Mo moments orient close to the net moment. The $μ$SR dynamical relaxation rate shows a cusp-like peak at the Curie temperature T$_C$ and a broad anomaly at T$^\star$$<$T$_C$…
We measured the magneto-optical response of (La$_{0.4}$Pr$_{0.6}$)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ in order to investigate the microscopic aspects of the magnetic field driven spin-glass insulator to ferromagnetic metal transition. Application of a magnetic field recovers the ferromagnetic state with an overall redshift of the electronic structure, growth of the bound carrier localization associated with ferromagnetic domains, development of a pseudogap, and softening of the Mn-O stretching and bending modes that indicate a structural change. We discuss field- and temperature-induced trends withi…
We study the effects of quenched charge disorder on the phase reconstruction near itinerant ferromagnetic quantum critical points in three spatial dimensions. Combining a replica disorder average with a fermionic version of the quantum order-by-disorder mechanism, we show that weak disorder destabilizes the ferromagnetic state and enhances the susceptibility towards incommensurate, spiral magnetic ordering. The Goldstone modes of the spiral phase are governed by a 3d-XY model. The induced disorder in the pitch of the spiral generates a random anisotropy for the Goldstone modes, inducing vortex…
The ground state properties of the ferromagnetic shape memory alloy of nominal composition Ni2Mn1.36Sn0.64 have been studied by dc magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements. Like few other Ni-Mn based alloys, this sample exhibits exchange bias phenomenon. The observed exchange bias pinning was found to originate right from the temperature where a step-like anomaly is present in the zero-field-cooled magnetization data. The ac susceptibility study indicates the onset of spin glass freezing near this step-like anomaly with clear frequency shift. The sample can be identified as a reentrant…
We report here a detailed study of AC/DC magnetization and longitudinal/transverse transport properties of La$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ single crystals below $T_{c}$ = 121 K. We find that the resistivity upturn below 40 K is related to the reentrant spin glass phase at the same temperature, accompanied by additional anomalous Hall effects. The carrier concentration from the ordinary Hall effects remains constant during the transition and is close to the nominal doping level (0.4 holes/Mn). The spin glass behavior comes from the competition between ferromagnetic double exchange and antif…
We report on a comprehensive study of CePd$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$ $(0.6 \leq x \leq 0.95)$ poly- and single crystals close to the ferromagnetic instability by means of low-temperature ac susceptibility, magnetization and volume thermal expansion. The signature of ferromagnetism in this heavy-fermion system can be traced from 6.6 K in CePd down to 25 mK for $x=0.87$. Despite pronounced non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) effects in both, specific heat and thermal expansion, the Grüneisen ratio {\it does not} diverge as $T\to 0$, providing evidence for the absence of a quantum critical point. Instead, a peculiar "Kon…
R$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ compounds show a ferromagnetic metal-insulator spin glass transition tuned by the radius of the rare earth ion R$^{3+}$. We have studied Gd$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ located on the verge of the transition, by neutron diffraction on a $^{160}$Gd isotopic sample, $μ$SR and X ray diffraction using the synchrotron radiation. All measurements were done both at ambient and under applied pressure. At ambient pressure, a ferromagnetic state is observed below the Curie temperature (T$_{\rm C}$ = 70 K). The ordered magnetic moments at 1.7 K are parallel and equal to 5.7(5) $μ_{\rm B}$ and 0.8(2) $…
Coexisting ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases over a range of temperature as well as magnetic field have been reported in many materials of current interest, showing disorder-broadened 1st order transitions. Anomalous history effects observed in magnetization and resistivity are being explained invoking the concepts of kinetic arrest akin to glass transitions. From magnetization measurements traversing novel paths in field-temperature space, we obtain the intriguing result that the regions of the sample which can be supercooled to lower temperatures undergo kinetic-arrest at higher tem…
While La0.7Ba0.3MnO3 is a ferromagnetic metal (TC = 340 K) with longrange ordering, Nd0.7Ba0.3MnO3 shows a transition around 150 K with a small increase in magnetization, but remains an insulator at all temperatures. Gd0.7Ba0.3MnO3 is non-magnetic and insulating at all temperatures. Low field dc magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements reveal the presence of a transition at around 150 K in Nd0.7Ba0.3MnO3, and a complex behavior with different ordering/freezing transitions at 62, 46 and 36 K in the case of Gd0.7Ba0.3MnO3, the last one being more prominent. The nature of the field depend…
We report an unusual nearly ferromagnetic, heavy-mass state with a surprisingly large Wilson ratio $R_{\textrm{w}}$ (e.g., $R_{\textrm{w}}\sim$ 700 for $x =$ 0.2) in double layered ruthenates (Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$)$_{3}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{7}$ with 0.08 $< x <$ 0.4. This state does not evolve into a long-range ferromagnetically ordered state despite considerably strong ferromagnetic correlations, but freezes into a cluster-spin-glass at low temperatures. In addition, evidence of non-Fermi liquid behavior is observed as the spin freezing temperature of the cluster-spin-glass approaches zero near $x \appr…
The static critical phenomenology near the Curie temperature of the re-entrant metallic alloys Au_0.81Fe_0.19, Ni_0.78Mn_0.22, Ni_0.79Mn_0.21 and amorphous a-Fe_0.98Zr_0.08 is studied using a variety of experimental techniques and methods of analysis. We have generally found that the values for the exponents alpha, beta, gamma and delta depart significantly from the predictions for the 3D Heisenberg model and are intermediate between these expectations and the values characterizing a typical spin glass transition. Comparing the exponents obtained in our work with indices for other re-entrant s…
We report structural, DC magnetization, detailed linear/non-linear AC susceptibility, (with applied frequency and amplitude) isothermal and thermoremanent magnetization (TRM) behavior for RuSr2Y1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10 (YRu-1222) magneto-superconductor to understand its complex magnetism. Studied sample is synthesized through the novel solid state High Pressure (6 GPa) High Temperature (1450oC) (HPHT) technique. The compound is crystallized in tetragonal structure with space group I4/mmm (No. 139). DC magnetic susceptibility shows that studied YRu-1222 is magneto-superconducting with Ru spins magnetic o…
We studied the ferromagnetic topology in a Y$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ thin film with a combination of magnetic force microscopy and magnetization measurements. Our results show that the spin-glass like behavior, reported previously for this system, could be attributed to frustrated interfaces of the ferromagnetic clusters embedded in a non-ferromagnetic matrix. We found temperature dependent changes of the magnetic topology at low temperatures, which suggests a non-static Mn$^{3+}$/Mn$^{4+}$ ratio.
We report on the study of unusual spin glass properties in the geometrically frustrated pyrochlore Tb$_{2}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{7}$, $T$$_{g}$$\simeq$24 K. The analysis of the nonlinear part of dc and complex susceptibilities, near the glass transition regime, suggests the existence of a statistical distribution of relaxation times in short-range ordered ferromagnetic clusters. In addition, the magnetic spins are not sufficiently frozen below the glass transition temperature; apparently, responsible for the non-equilibrium scaling behavior of the static critical exponents of nonlinear susceptibilities.…
The magnetic and electronic properties of Sr1-xLaxRuO3 were studied by means of dc-magnetization, ac-susceptibility, specific heat, and electrical resistivity measurements. The dc-magnetization and ac-susceptibility measurements have revealed that the transition temperature and the ordered moment of the ferromagnetic order are strongly suppressed as La is substituted for Sr. The ac-susceptibility exhibits a peak at T* due to the occurrence of spontaneous spin polarization. Furthermore, we observed that T* shows clear frequency variations for x>= 0.3. The magnitude of the frequency shifts of T*…
We report a comprehensive investigation of the structural, magnetic, transport and thermodynamic properties of a single crystal PrAlSi, in comparison to its nonmagnetic analogue LaAlSi. PrAlSi exhibits a ferromagnetic transition at $T_C$ = 17.8 K which, however, is followed by two weak phase transitions at lower temperatures. Based on the combined dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements, we propose the two reentrant magnetic phases below $T_C$ to be spin glasses or ferromagnetic cluster glasses. When the magnetic glassy states are suppressed by small field, several remarkable features a…
Single crystals of Ca[Co_(2-x)Ir_(x)]_(2-y)As2 with 0 <= x <= 0.35 and 0.10 <= y <= 0.14 have been grown using the self-flux technique and characterized by single-crystal x-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, magnetization M and magnetic susceptibility chi measurements versus temperature T, magnetic field H, and time t, and heat capacity Cp(H,T) measurements. The XRD refinements reveal that all the Ir-substituted crystals crystallize in a collapsed-tetragonal structure as does the parent CaCo_(2-y)As2 compound. A small 3.3% Ir substitution for Co in CaCo_(1.86)As2 dras…
To clarify the magnetic properties of cluster-glass states in Sr1-xLaxRuO3 (0.3 <= x <= 0.5), we report herein the results of muon spin relaxation (muSR) and neutron powder diffraction measurements. The muSR experiments showed that magnetic clusters start developing well above the peak temperature T^* in the ac susceptibility. The volume fraction of the magnetically ordered region increases continuously with decreasing temperature, showing no anomaly at T^*, and reaches nearly 100% at the lowest temperature. The temperature variation of the volume fraction is essentially independent of the La …
We discuss the possibility of spin glass order in the vicinity of the unexpected metallic state of the two-dimensional electron gas in zero applied magnetic field. An average ferromagnetic moment may also be present, and the spin glass order then resides in the plane orthogonal to the ferromagnetic moment. We argue that a quantum transition involving the destruction of the spin glass order in an applied in-plane magnetic field offers a natural explanation of some features of recent magnetoconductance measurements. We present a quantum field theory for such a transition and compute its mean fie…
We have investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of perovskite SrRu1-xIrxO3 thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition on atomically-flat (001) SrTiO3 substrates. SrRuO3 has the properties of a ferromagnetic metal with Curie temperature 150 K. Substituting Ir for Ru in SrRuO3, films showed fully-metallic behavior and ferromagnetic ordering, although resistivity increased and the ferromagnetic TC decreased. Films with x = 0.25 underwent the metal-to-insulator transition at 75 K, and spin-glass-like ordering at 45 K with the elimination of ferromagnetic long-range ordering caused by …
We demonstrate that the cluster-glass state emerges as ferromagnetic quantum criticality is avoided in itinerant ferromagnet Sr1-x(La0.5K0.5)xRuO3. In this compound, the ferromagnetic order is suppressed by increasing x, and then disappears at the critical concentration: x=0.5. In this x range, the present study reveals that no prominent feature is ascribed to the quantum critical fluctuations in specific heat. Instead, ac magnetic susceptibility exhibits a broad peak due to spontaneous spin freezing, and the peak temperature depends significantly on the frequency of the applied ac magnetic fi…
We report the observation of spin glass state in the double perovskite oxide Sr$_{2}$FeCoO$_{6}$ prepared through sol-gel technique. Initial structural studies using x rays reveal that the compound crystallizes in tetragonal $I 4/m$ structure with lattice parameters, $a$ = 5.4609(2) Åand $c$ = 7.7113(7) Å. The temperature dependent powder x ray studies reveal no structural phase transition in the temperature range 10 -- 300 K. However, the unit cell volume shows an anomaly coinciding with the magnetic transition temperature thereby suggesting a close connection between lattice and magnetism. N…
The development of spin glass like state in a geometrically frustrated (GF) magnet is a matter of great debate. We investigated the effect of magnetic (Mn) and nonmagnetic (Ga) doping at the Cr site of the layered GF antiferromagnetic compound LiCrO2. 10% Ga doping at the Cr site does not invoke any metastability typical of a glassy magnetic state. However, similar amount of Mn doping certainly drives the system to a spin glass state which is particularly evident from the relaxation, magnetic memory and heat capacity studies. The onset of glassy state in 10% Mn doped sample is of reentrant typ…
Non-equilibrium charge dynamics, such as cooling-rate-dependent charge vitrification and physical aging, have been demonstrated for a charge-cluster glass in $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$CsZn(SCN)$_4$ using electron transport measurements. The temperature evolution of the relaxation time obeys the Arrhenius law, indicating that the glass-forming charge liquid can be classified as a "`strong" liquid in the scheme of canonical structural-glass formers. X-ray diffuse scattering further reveals that the spatial growth of charge clusters in the charge liquid is frozen below the glass transition temperature, i…
The effect of quenched disorder on the multiphase competition has been investigated by examining the pressure phase diagram of half doped manganite Ln0.5B0.5MnO3 (Ln = Sm and Nd) with A-site disorders. Sm0.5Ba0.5MnO3, a spin glass insulator at ambient pressure, switches to a ferromagnetic metal with increasing pressure, followed by a rapid increase of the ferromagnetic transition temperature Tc. The rapid increase of Tc was confirmed also for Nd0.5Ba0.5MnO3. These observations indicate that the unusual suppression of the multicritical phase boundary in the A-site disordered system, previously …
Cerium 4f electronic spin dynamics in single crystals of the heavy-fermion system CeFePO is studied by means of ac-susceptibility, specific heat and muon-spin relaxation ($μ$SR). Short-range static magnetism occurs below the freezing temperature Tg ~ 0.7 K, which prevents the system from accessing the putative ferromagnetic quantum critical point. In the $μ$SR, the sample-averaged muon asymmetry function is dominated by strongly inhomogeneous spin fluctuations below 10 K and exhibits a characteristic time-field scaling relation expected from glassy spin dynamics, strongly evidencing cooperativ…
We report detailed dc magnetization, linear and non-linear ac susceptibility measurements on the hole doped disordered cobaltite La$_{0.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$CoO$_3$. Our results show that the magnetically ordered state of the system consists of coexisting non-ferromagnetic phases along with percolating ferromagnetic-clusters. The percolating ferromagnetic-clusters possibly undergo a 3D Hisenberg like magnetic ordering at the Curie temperature of 202(3) K. In between 202 and 220 K, the linear and non-linear ac susceptibility measurements show the presence of magnetic correlations even when the spontane…
In the present work it is studied the fermionic van Hemmen model for the spin glass (SG) with a transverse magnetic field $Γ$. In this model, the spin operators are written as a bilinear combination of fermionic operators, which allows the analysis of the interplay between charge and spin fluctuations in the presence of a quantum spin flipping mechanism given by $Γ$. The problem is expressed in the fermionic path integral formalism. As results, magnetic phase diagrams of temperature versus the ferromagnetic interaction are obtained for several values of chemical potential $μ$ and $Γ$. The $Γ$ …
We report inelastic neutron scattering results that reveal an hour-glass magnetic excitation spectrum in La1.75Sr0.25CoO4. The magnetic spectrum is similar to that observed previously in La1.67Sr0.33CoO4, but the spectral features are broader. We show that the spectrum of La1.75Sr0.25CoO4 can be modeled by the spin dynamics of a system with a disordered cluster spin glass ground state. Bulk magnetization measurements are presented which support the proposed glassy ground state. The observations reiterate the importance of quasi-one-dimensional magnetic correlations and disorder for the hour-gl…
When suppressing the itinerant antiferromagnetism in chromium by doping with the isostructual itinerant ferromagnet iron, a dome of spin-glass behavior emerges around a putative quantum critical point at an iron concentration $x \approx 0.15$. Here, we report a comprehensive investigation of polycrystalline samples of Fe$_{x}$Cr$_{1-x}$ in the range $0.05 \leq x \leq 0.30$ using x-ray powder diffraction, magnetization, ac susceptibility, and neutron depolarization measurements, complemented by specific heat and electrical resistivity data for $x = 0.15$. Besides antiferromagnetic ($x < 0.15$) …
Geometrically frustrated spin systems often do not exhibit long-range ordering, resulting in either quantum-mechanically disordered states, such as quantum spin liquids, or classically disordered states, such as spin ices or spin glasses. Geometric frustration may play a similar role in charge ordering, potentially leading to unconventional electronic states without long-range order; however, there are no previous experimental demonstrations of this phenomenon. Here, we show that a charge-cluster glass evolves upon cooling in the absence of long-range charge ordering for an organic conductor w…
We report on the synthesis and magnetic properties of frustrated Na0.22MnO2*0.39H2O and K0.6MnO2*0.48H2O with the birnessite structure. The structure, static and dynamic magnetic properties of the compounds are investigated in detail. A combination of DC and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements and magnetization decay measurements reveal cluster glass behavior below the freezing temperature of 4 K for Na-birnessite and 6 K for K-birnessite. The frequency dependence of the freezing temperature is analyzed on the basis of dynamic scaling laws including the critical slowing down formula and th…

The physics of disordered alloys, such as typically the well known case of CeNi1-xCux alloys, showing an interplay among the Kondo effect, the spin glass state and a magnetic order, has been studied firstly within an average description like in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. Recently, a theoretical model (PRB 74, 014427 (2006)) involving a more local description of the intersite interaction has been proposed to describe the phase diagram of CeNi1-xCux. This alloy is an example of the complex interplay between Kondo effect and frustration in which there is in particular the onset of a clust…
A systematic study of thermomagnetic irreversibility CoS$_{1.76}$Se$_{0.24}$ has been carried out. Our study shows that the resistivity at low temperature can be tuned by cooling in different magnetic fields and the critical field required for paramagnetic (PM) to ferromagnetic (FM) transition varies non-monotonically with temperature. The field induced PM to FM transition results in giant positive magnetoresistance (MR) of about 160\% at 5 K. Measurements under CHUF (cooling and heating in unequal magnetic field) protocol show reentrant transition on warming under higher magnetic field (than …
Hour-glass-shaped magnetic excitation spectra have been detected in a variety of doped transition-metal oxides with stripe-like charge order. Compared to the predictions of spin-wave theory, these spectra display a different intensity distribution and anomalous broadening. Here we show, based on a comprehensive modelling of these phenomena for La5/3Sr1/3CoO4, how quenched disorder in the charge sector causes frustration, and consequently cluster-glass behavior at low temperatures, in the spin sector. This spin-glass physics, which is insensitive to the detailed nature of the charge disorder, b…
Recent experiments on the two dimensional electron gas in various semiconductor devices have revealed an unexpected metal-insulator transition and have challenged the previously held assumption that there is no such transition in two dimensions. While the experiments are still at the stage of rapid development, it is becoming evident that they cannot be understood from the conventional perspective of weak interactions. In the present paper, we propose the following. (1) The low-density insulating state is the Wigner Glass, a phase with quasi-long-range translational order and competing ferroma…
The recent observation of an electronic cluster glass state composed of random domains with unidirectional modulation of charge density and/or spin density on Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ} reinvigorates the debate of existence of competing interactions and their importance in high temperature superconductivity. By using a variational approach, here we show that the presence of the cluster glass state is actually an inherent nature of the model based on the antiferromagnetic interaction (J) only, i.e. the well known t-J model. There is no need yet to introduce a competing interaction to understan…
A 63Cu and 139La NMR/NQR study of superconducting (Tc=7 K) La1.94Sr0.06CuO4 single crystal is reported. Coexistence of spin-glass and superconducting phases is found below ~5 K from 139La NMR relaxation. 63Cu and 139La NMR spectra show that, upon cooling, CuO2 planes progressively separate into two magnetic phases, one of them having enhanced antiferromagnetic correlations. These results establish the AF-cluster nature of the spin-glass. We discuss how this phase can be related to the microsegregation of mobile holes and to the possible pinning of charge-stripes.
