Spin liquids represent exotic types of quantum matter that evade conventional symmetry-breaking order even at zero temperature. Exhaustive classifications of spin liquids have been carried out in several systems, particularly in the presence of full SU(2) spin-rotation symmetry. Real magnetic compounds, however, generically break SU(2) spin symmetry as a result of spin-orbit coupling - which in many materials provides an `order one' effect. We generalize previous works by using the projective symmetry group method to classify $Z_2$ spin liquids on the square lattice when SU(2) spin symmetry is maximally lifted. We find that, counterintuitively, the lifting of spin symmetry actually results in vastly more spin liquid phases compared to SU(2)-invariant systems. A generic feature of the SU(2)-broken case is that the spinons naturally undergo $p+ip$ pairing; consequently, many of these $Z_2$ spin liquids feature a topologically nontrivial spinon band structure supporting gapless Majorana edge states. We study in detail several spin-liquid phases with varying numbers of gapless edge states and discuss their topological protection. The edge states are often protected by a combination of time reversal and lattice symmetries and hence resemble recently proposed topological crystalline superconductors.
We study possible spin liquids on square lattice that respect all lattice symmetries and time-reversal symmetry within the framework of Schwinger boson (mean-field) theory. Such spin liquids have spin gap and emergent Z_2 gauge field excitations. We classify them by the projective symmetry group method, and find six spin liquid states that are potentially relevant to the J_1-J_2 Heisenberg model. The properties of these states are studied under mean-field approximation. Interestingly we find a spin liquid state that can go through continuous phase transitions to either the Néel magnetic order …
In quasi-1D conducting nanowires spin-orbit coupling destructs spin-charge separation, intrinsic to Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL). We study renormalization of a single scattering impurity in a such liquid. Performing bosonization of low-energy excitations and exploiting perturbative renormalization analysis we extend the phase portrait in $K_s$ - $K_c$ space, obtained previously for TLL with decoupled spin-charge channels.
In this paper, we explore the relationship between strong spin-orbit coupling and spin liquid physics. We study a very general model on the triangular lattice where spin-orbit coupling leads to the presence of highly anisotropic interactions. We use variational Monte Carlo to study both $U(1)$ quantum spin liquid states and ordered ones, via the Gutzwiller projected fermion construction. We thereby obtain the ground state phase diagram in this phase space. We furthermore consider effects beyond the Gutzwiller wavefunctions for the spinon Fermi surface quantum spin liquid, which are of particul…
We show that spin-orbit coupling (SOC) plays Janus-faced roles on the orbitally-selective Mott transitions in a three-orbital Hubbard model with crystal field splitting at a specific filling of $2/3$, which is a minimal Hamiltonian for ruthenates. While the SOC favors metallic state due to enhancement of orbital hybridization at smaller on-site Coulomb repulsions, it stabilizes the Mott insulating state ascribed to lifting of orbital degeneracies and enhancement of band polarizations at larger electronic interaction. Moreover, an orbitally-selective non-Fermi liquid (OSnFL), where breakdown an…
Strongly correlated materials with strong spin-orbit coupling hold promise for realizing topological phases with fractionalized excitations. Here we propose a chiral spin-orbital liquid as a stable phase of a realistic model for heavy-element double perovskites. This spin liquid state has Majorana fermion excitations with a gapless spectrum characterized by nodal lines along the edges of the Brillouin zone. We show that the nodal lines are topological defects of a non-Abelian Berry connection and that the system exhibits dispersing surface states. We discuss some experimental signatures of thi…
We present a large-scale density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) study of the spin-$1$ SU(3) bilinear-biquadratic model on the square lattice, which was suggested to host a nematic spin liquid state in recent DMRG calculations. We report that this spin liquid appears to strongly compete with a three-sublattice magnetic order. To further study the competition between the two states, and the reason of the emergent nematic spin liquid, we included an additional next-nearest-neighbor SU(3) symmetric interactions along one of the two plaquette diagonal directions. This allows to tune the square…
Many correlated metallic materials are described by Landau Fermi-liquid theory at low energies, but for Hund metals the Fermi-liquid coherence scale $T_{\text{FL}}$ is found to be surprisingly small. In this Letter, we study the simplest impurity model relevant for Hund metals, the three-channel spin-orbital Kondo model, using the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method and compute its global phase diagram. In this framework, $T_{\text{FL}}$ becomes arbitrarily small close to two new quantum critical points (QCPs) which we identify by tuning the spin or spin-orbital Kondo couplings into t…
The isostructural double perovskites Ba$_2$CuTeO$_6$ and Ba$_2$CuWO$_6$ are shown by theory and experiment to be frustrated square-lattice antiferromagnets with opposing dominant magnetic interactions. This is driven by differences in orbital hybridisation of Te$^{6+}$ and W$^{6+}$. A spin-liquid-like ground state is predicted for Ba$_2$Cu(Te$_{1-x}$W$_x$)O$_6$ solid solution similar to recent observations in Sr$_2$Cu(Te$_{1-x}$W$_x$)O$_6$.
We discuss quasi one-dimensional magnetic Mott insulators of the pyroxene family where spin and orbital degrees of freedom remain tightly bound. We analyze their excitation spectrum and outline the conditions under which the orbital degrees of freedom become liberated so that the excitations become dispersive and the spectral weight shifts to energies much smaller than the exchange integral.
The spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on square lattices are investigated via the finite projected entangled pair states (PEPS) method. Using the recently developed gradient optimization method combining with Monte Carlo sampling techniques, we are able to obtain the ground states energies that are competitive to the best results. The calculations show that there is no Néel order, dimer order and plaquette order in the region of 0.42 $\lesssim J_2/J_1\lesssim$ 0.6, suggesting a single spin liquid phase in the intermediate region. Furthermore, the calculated staggered spin, dimer and plaque…
Phase separation and the possibility of orbital liquid states in CMR manganites. A 139La NMR study
Both the Jahn-Teller distortion of Cu$^{2+}$O$_6$ octahedra and magnetic ordering are absent in hexagonal Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$ suggesting a Cu 3$d$ spin-orbital liquid state. Here, by means of resonant x-ray scattering and absorption experiment, we show that oxygen 2$p$ holes play crucial role in stabilizing this spin-orbital liquid state. These oxygen holes appear due to the "reaction" Sb$^{5+}$$\rightarrow$Sb$^{3+}$ $+$ two oxygen holes, with these holes being able to attach to Cu ions. The hexagonal phase with oxygen 2$p$ holes exhibits also a novel charge-orbital dynamics which is absent in…
Structure with orbital degeneracy is unstable toward spontaneous distortion. Such orbital correlation usually has a much higher energy scale than spins, and therefore, magnetic transition takes place at a much lower temperature, almost independently from orbital ordering. However, when the energy scales of orbitals and spins meet, there is a possibility of spin-orbital entanglement that would stabilize novel ground state such as spin-orbital liquid and random singlet state. Here we review on such a novel spin-orbital magnetism found in the hexagonal perovskite oxide Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$, which …
In a recent comments [arXiv:1909.12788 (2019)], Zhao et al. argue that the definition of dimer orders used in our paper [Phys. Rev. B 98, 241109 (2018)] may not rule out valence bond solid (VBS) orders of $J_1$-$J_2$ model on the open boundary conditions (OBC). In this reply, we show that their argument does not apply to our case.
We generalize the construction of the spin-1/2 SU(2) Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) state to the case of the self-conjugate $\bf 6$-representation of SU(4). As for the case of SU(2) [J-Y. Chen and D. Poilblanc, Phys. Rev. B $\textbf{97}$, 161107(R) (2018)], we use the Projected Entangled Pair State (PEPS) formalism to derive a simple (two-dimensional) family of generalized SU(4) RVB states on the square lattice. We show that, when longer-range SU(4)-singlet bonds are included, a local gauge symmetry is broken down from U(1) to $\mathbb{Z}_2$, leading to the emergence of a short-range spin liqui…
The spin liquid phase is one of the prominent strongly interacting topological phases of matter whose unambiguous confirmation is yet to be reached despite intensive experimental efforts on numerous candidate materials. Recently, a new family of correlated honeycomb materials, in which strong spin-orbit coupling allows for various bond-dependent spin interactions, have been promising candidates to realize the Kitaev spin liquid. Here we study a model with bond-dependent spin interactions and show numerical evidence for the existence of an extended quantum spin liquid region, which is possibly …
Spin-orbit coupling in the metallic and spin-liquid phases of Na4Ir3O8
Spin-orbital liquids are quantum disordered states in systems with entangled spin and orbital degrees of freedom. We study exactly solvable spin-orbital models in two dimensions with selected Heisenberg-, Kitaev-, and $Γ$-type interactions, as well as external magnetic fields. These models realize a variety of spin-orbital-liquid phases featuring dispersing Majorana fermions with Fermi surfaces, nodal Dirac or quadratic band touching points, or full gaps. In particular, we show that Zeeman magnetic fields can stabilize nontrivial flux patterns and induce metamagnetic transitions between states…
We use the tensor network algorithm to show evidences of a non-uniform chiral spin-liquid (CSL) ground state in a frustrated spin-1/2 model on a square lattice, in the regime of moat-like band structure of the lattice, i.e., a band with infinitely degenerate energy minima attained along a closed contour in the Brillouin zone. The analytical description of the state is given by the effective field theory of a topological square-lattice fermionic Chern insulator coupled to the Chern-Simons gauge field. The observed non-uniform CSL has a substantial effect on a nearby free-fermion environment. We…
The Kitaev model, characterized by bond-dependent Ising spin interactions among spin-orbit entangled dipole moments in Mott insulators, offered a new approach to quantum spin liquids. Motivated by another type of bond-dependent interaction among quadrupole moments in $5d^2$ Mott insulators, we provide a microscopic route to uncover the Kitaev multipolar liquid, featuring fractionalized excitations out of non-Kramers doublets carrying multipole moments. The key ingredient is the magnetic field that allows for bond-anisotropic quadrupole-octupole interactions via mixing with the excited triplet …
Anomalous enhancement of Wilson ratio in a quantum spin liquid with strong spin-orbital entanglement: the case of Na4Ir3O8
We consider the phase diagram of the most general SU(4)-symmetric two-site Hamiltonian for a system of two fermions per site (ie self-conjugate $\bf 6$ representation) on the square lattice. It is known that this model hosts magnetic phases breaking SU(4) symmetry and quantum disordered dimer-like phases breaking lattice translation symmetry. Motivated by a previous work [O. Gauthé, S. Capponi and D. Poilblanc, Phys. Rev. B $\textbf{99}$, 241112(R) (2019)], we investigate the possibility of the existence of SU(4) quantum spin liquid phases in this model, using SU(4)-symmetric Projected Entangl…
We study the fate of a two-dimensional system of interacting fermions with Rashba spin-orbit coupling in the dilute limit. The interactions are strongly renormalized at low densities, and give rise to various fermionic liquid crystalline phases, including a spin-density wave, an in-plane ferromagnet, and a non-magnetic nematic phase, even in the weak coupling limit. The nature of the ground state in the low-density limit depends on the range of the interactions: for short range interactions it is the ferromagnet, while for dipolar interactions the nematic phase is favored. Interestingly, the f…
We study a spin-orbital model for 4$d^{1}$ or 5$d^{1}$ Mott insulators in ordered double perovskites with strong spin-orbit coupling. This model is conveniently written in terms of pseudospin and pseudo-orbital operators representing multipoles of the effective $j=3/2$ angular momentum. Similarities between this model and the effective theories of Kitaev materials motivate the proposal of a chiral spin-orbital liquid with Majorana fermion excitations. The thermodynamic and spectroscopic properties of this quantum spin liquid are characterized using parton mean-field theory. The heat capacity, …
A one-parameter family of long-range resonating valence bond (RVB) state on the square lattice was previously proposed to describe a critical spin liquid (SL) phase of the spin-$1/2$ frustrated Heisenberg model. We provide evidence that this RVB state in fact also realises a topological (long-range entangled) $\mathbb{Z}_2$ SL, limited by two transitions to critical SL phases. The topological phase is naturally connected to the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge symmetry of the local tensor. This work shows that, on one hand, spin-$1/2$ topological SL with $C_{4v}$ point group symmetry and $SU(2)$ spin rota…
We provide an exact study of dynamical correlations for the quantum spin-orbital liquid phases of an SU(2)-symmetric Kitaev honeycomb lattice model. We show that the spin dynamics in this Kugel-Khomskii type model is exactly the density-density correlation function of S=1 fermionic magnons, which could be probed in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments. We predict the characteristic signatures of spin-orbital fractionalization in inelastic scattering experiments and compare them to the ones of the spin-anisotropic Kitaev honeycomb spin liquid. In particular, the resonant inelastic x-…
Due to the separation between the spin and the orbital screening scales, the normal state of Hund's metals at ambient temperature can be loosely characterized as a partially coherent state with fluctuating spins and quenched orbital moments. With the aim to characterize this situation more precisely, we investigate the Kondo-Kanamori impurity model that describes the low-energy local physics of three-orbital Hund's metals occupied by two or four electrons. Within this model one can diminish the mixed spin-orbital terms and thereby enhance the separation between the two screening scales, allowi…
We show that the off-diagonal exchange anisotropy drives Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling to a classical spin liquid regime, characterized by an infinite number of ground states and Ising variables living on closed or open strings. Depending on the sign of the anisotropy, quantum fluctuations either fail to lift the degeneracy down to very low temperatures, or select non-collinear magnetic states with unconventional spin correlations. The results apply to all 2D and 3D tri-coordinated materials with bond-directional anisotropy, and provide a consistent interpretation of the supp…
The magnetic response of antiferromagnetic CsO2, coming from the p-orbital S=1/2 spins of anionic O2- molecules, is followed by 133Cs nuclear magnetic resonance across the structural phase transition occuring at Ts1=61 K on cooling. Above Ts1, where spins form a square magnetic lattice, we observe a huge, nonmonotonic temperature dependence of the exchange coupling originating from thermal librations of O2- molecules. Below Ts1, where antiferromagnetic spin chains are formed as a result of p-orbital ordering, we observe a spin Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid behavior of spin dynamics. These two inte…
Liu et al. [Phys.Rev.B 98, 241109 (2018)] used Monte Carlo sampling of the physical degrees of freedom of a Projected Entangled Pair State (PEPS) type wave function for the $S=1/2$ frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice and found a non-magnetic state argued to be a gapless spin liquid when the coupling ratio $g=J_2/J_1$ is in the range $g \in [0.42,0.6]$. Here we show that their definition of the order parameter for another candidate ground state within this coupling window---a spontaneously dimerized state---is problematic. The order parameter as defined will not detect…
Motivated by recent observation of nematicity in Moiré systems, we study three different orbital orders that potentially can happen in Moiré systems: (1) the nematic order; (2) the valley polarization; and (3) the "compass order". Each order parameter spontaneously breaks part of the spatial symmetries of the system. We explore physics caused by the quantum fluctuations close to the order-disorder transition of these order parameters. Especially, we recognize that the symmetry of the Moiré systems leads to a crucial difference of the effective theory describing the nematic order from the stand…

The ground state of the spin$-1/2$ kagome antiferromagnet remains uncertain despite decades of active research. Here we step aside from this debated question to address the ground-state nature of a related, and potentially just as rich, system made of corner-sharing triangles: the square-kagome lattice (SKL). Our work is motivated by the recent synthesis of a distorted SKL compound mentioned in [Morita & Tohyama, J. Phys. Soc. Japan 87, 043704 (2018)]. We have studied its spin$-1/2$ $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$ phase diagram with an unrestricted Schwinger boson mean-field theory (SBMFT). We show that, in a…
Formation of energy gap in higher dimensional spin-orbital liquids
Using the natural orbitals renormalization group, we studied the problem of a localized spin- 1/2 impurity coupled to two helical liquids via the Kondo interaction in a quantum spin Hall insulator, based on the Kane-Mele model defined in a finite zigzag graphene nanoribbon. We investigated the influence of the Kondo couplings with the helical liquids on both the static and dynamic properties of the ground state. The number and distinct spatial structures of the active natural orbitals (ANOs), which play essential roles in constructing the ground-state wave function, were first analyzed. Our nu…
We investigate the ground-state and the finite-temperature properties of the bond-random $s=1/2$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice with frustrating nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions, $J_1$ and $J_2$, by the exact diagonalization and the Hams--de Raedt methods. The ground-state phase diagram of the model is constructed in the randomness versus the frustration ($J_2/J_1$) plane, with the aim of clarifying the effects of randomness and frustration in stabilizing a variety of phases. We find that the randomness induces the gapless quantum spin liquid (QSL)-like s…
Frustration in quantum spin systems promote a variety of novel quantum phases. An important example is the frustrated spin-$1$ model on the square lattice with the nearest-neighbor bilinear ($J_1$) and biquadratic ($K_1$) interactions. We provide strong evidence for a nematic spin liquid phase in a range of $K_1/J_1$ near the SU(3)-symmetric point ($J_1 = K_1$), based on the linear flavor-wave theory and extensive density matrix renormalization group calculation. This phase displays no spin dipolar or quadrupolar order, preserves translational symmetry but spontaneously breaks $C_4$ lattice ro…

Theoretical models of the spin-orbital liquid (SOL) FeSc$_2$S$_4$ have predicted it to be in close proximity to a quantum critical point separating a spin-orbital liquid phase from a long-range ordered magnetic phase. Here, we examine the magnetic excitations of FeSc$_2$S$_4$ through time-domain terahertz spectroscopy under an applied magnetic field. At low temperatures an excitation emerges that we attribute to a singlet-triplet excitation from the SOL ground state. A three-fold splitting of this excitation is observed as a function of applied magnetic field. As singlet-triplet excitations ar…
Recently it was shown that the multipolar Kondo problem, wherein a quantum impurity carrying higher-rank multipolar moments interacts with conduction electrons, leads to novel non-Fermi liquid states. Because of the multipolar character of the local moments, the form of the interaction with conduction electrons is strongly dependent on the orbital-symmetry of the conduction electrons via crystalline symmetry constraints. This suggests that there may exist a variety of different non-Fermi liquid states in generic multipolar Kondo problems depending on the character of conduction electrons. In t…
