We prove a subconvexity bound for the central value L(1/2, chi) of a Dirichlet L-function of a character chi to a prime power modulus q=p^n of the form L(1/2, chi)\ll p^r * q^(theta+epsilon) with a fixed r and theta\approx 0.1645 < 1/6, breaking the long-standing Weyl exponent barrier. In fact, we develop a general new theory of estimation of short exponential sums involving p-adically analytic phases, which can be naturally seen as a p-adic analogue of the method of exponent pairs. This new method is presented in a ready-to-use form and applies to a wide class of well-behaved phases including many that arise from a stationary phase analysis of hyper-Kloosterman and other complete exponential sums.
For Dirichlet series roughly of the type $Z(s, w) = sum_d L(s, chi_d) d^{-w}$ the subconvexity bound $Z(s, w) \ll (sw(s+w))^{1/6+\varepsilon}$ is proved on the critical lines $\Re s = \Re w = 1/2$. The convexity bound would replace 1/6 with 1/4. In addition, a mean square bound is proved that is consistent with the Lindelöf hypothesis. An interesting specialization is $s=1/2$ in which case the above result give a subconvex bound for a Dirichlet series without an Euler product.
We study a double Dirichlet series of the form $\sum_{d}L(s,χ_{d}χ)χ'(d)d^{-w}$, where $χ$ and $χ'$ are quadratic Dirichlet characters with prime conductors $N$ and $M$ respectively. A functional equation group isomorphic to the dihedral group of order 6 continues the function meromorphically to $\mathbb{C}^{2}$. A convexity bound at the central point is established to be $(MN)^{3/8+\varepsilon}$ and a subconvexity bound of $(MN(M+N))^{1/6+\varepsilon}$ is proven. The developed theory is used to prove an upper bound for the smallest positive integer $d$ such that $L(1/2,χ_{dN})$ does not vanis…
We prove a Weyl-type subconvexity bound for the central value of the $L$-function of a Hecke-Maass form or a holomorphic Hecke eigenform twisted by a quadratic Dirichlet character, uniform in the archimedean parameter as well as the twisting parameter. A similar hybrid bound holds for quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions, improving on a result of Heath-Brown. As a consequence of these new bounds, we obtain explicit estimates for the number of Heegner points of large odd discriminant in shrinking sets.
We derive a Motohashi-type formula for the cubic moment of central values of $L$-functions of level $q$ cusp forms twisted by quadratic characters of conductor $q$, previously studied by Conrey and Iwaniec and Young. Corollaries of this formula include Weyl-subconvex bounds for $L$-functions of weight two cusp forms twisted by quadratic characters, and estimates towards the Ramanujan-Petersson conjecture for Fourier coefficients of weight 3/2 cusp forms.
We prove hybrid subconvexity bounds for a wide class of twisted L-functions $L(s,f\times χ)$ at the central point, including a new instance of the Weyl subconvexity bound.
Given a Dirichlet character $χ$ modulo $q$ and its associated $L$-function, $L(s,χ)$, we provide an explicit version of Burgess' estimate for $|L(s, χ)|$. We use partial summation to provide bounds along the vertical lines $\Re{s} = 1 - {r}^{-1}$, where $r$ is a parameter associated with Burgess' character sum estimate. These bounds are then connected across the critical strip using the Phragmén--Lindelöf principle. In particular, for $σ\in [\frac{1}{2}, \frac{9}{10}]$, we establish $$|L(σ+ it, χ)| \leq (1.105) (0.692)^σq^{\frac{31}{80}-\frac{2}{5}σ}(\log{q})^{\frac{33}{16}-\frac{9}{8}σ} |σ+ i…
Let $M=M_1 M_2 M_3$ be the product of three distinct primes and let $χ=χ_1 χ_2 χ_3$ be a Dirichlet character of modulus $M$ such that each $χ_i$ is a primitive character modulo $M_i$ for $i=1,2,3$. In this paper, we provide a $δ$-symbol method for obtaining non-trivial cancellation in smooth character sums of the form $\sum_{n=1}^\infty χ(n) W(n/N)$, with $N$ roughly of size $\sqrt M$ and $W$ a smooth compactly supported weight function on $(0, \infty)$. As a corollary, we establish hybrid subconvexity bounds for the associated Dirichlet $L$-function.
Let f be a cusp form for the group SL(3, Z) with Langlands parameter mu and associated L-function L(s, f). If mu is in generic position, i.e. away from the Weyl chamber walls and away from the self-dual forms, we prove the subconvexity bound L(1/2, f) << || mu || ^{3/4 - 1/120000}.
In this paper we establish a very flexible and explicit Voronoi summation formula. This is then used to prove an almost Weyl strength subconvexity result for automorphic $L$-functions of degree two in the depth aspect. That is, looking at twists by characters of prime power conductor. This is the natural $p$-adic analogue to the well studied $t$-aspect.
We describe a new method to obtain weak subconvexity bounds for $L$-functions with mild hypotheses on the size of the Dirichlet coefficients. We verify these hypotheses for all automorphic $L$-functions and (with mild restrictions) the Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions attached to two automorphic representations. The proof relies on a new unconditional log-free zero density estimate for Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions.
A simple proof of the classical subconvexity bound $ζ(1/2+it) \ll_εt^{1/6+ε}$ for the Riemann zeta-function is given, and estimation by more refined techniques is discussed. The connections between the Dirichlet divisor problem and the mean square of $|ζ(1/2+it)|$ are analysed.
Let $f $ be a holomorphic Hecke eigenforms or a Hecke-Maass cusp form for the full modular group $ SL(2, \mathbb{Z})$. In this paper we shall use circle method to prove the Weyl exponent for $GL(2)$ $L$-functions. We shall prove that \[ L \left( \frac{1}{2} + it \right) \ll_{f, ε} \left( 1 + |t|\right)^{1/3 + ε}, \] for any $ε> 0.$
Let $f $ be a holomorphic Hecke eigenform or a Hecke-Maass cusp form for the full modular group $ SL(2, \mathbb{Z})$. In this paper we shall use circle method to prove the Weyl exponent for $GL(2)$ $L$-functions. We shall prove that \[ L \left( \frac{1}{2} + it, f \right) \ll_{f, ε} \left( 2 + |t|\right)^{1/3 + ε}, \] for any $ε> 0.$
Let $π$ be a $SL(3,\mathbb Z)$ Hecke-Maass cusp form and $χ$ a primitive Dirichlet character of prime power conductor $\mathfrak{q}=p^k$ with $p$ prime. In this paper we will prove the following subconvexity bound $$ L\left(\frac{1}{2}+it,π\times χ\right)\ll_{π,\varepsilon} p^{3/4}\big(\mathfrak{q}(1+|t|)\big)^{3/4-3/40+\varepsilon}, $$ for any $\varepsilon >0$ and $t \in \mathbb{R}$.
Let $π$ be a $SL(3,\mathbb Z)$ Hecke-Maass cusp form satisfying the Ramanujan conjecture and the Selberg-Ramanujan conjecture, and let $χ$ be a primitive Dirichlet character modulo $M$, which we assume to be prime for simplicity. We will prove the following subconvex bound $$ L\left(\tfrac{1}{2},π\otimesχ\right)\ll_{π,\varepsilon} M^{\frac{3}{4}-\frac{1}{1612}+\varepsilon}. $$
Let $π$ be a $SL(3,\mathbb Z)$ automorphic form. Let $χ=χ_1χ_2$ be a Dirichlet character with $χ_i$ primitive modulo $M_i$. Suppose $M_1$, $M_2$ are primes such that $\sqrt{M_2}M^{4δ}<M_1<M_2M^{-3δ}$, where $M=M_1M_2$ and $0<δ<1/28$. In this paper we will prove the following subconvex bound $$ L(\t1/2,π\otimesχ)\ll_{π,\varepsilon} M^{3/4}-δ+\varepsilon}. $$
Let $f$ be a $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ holomorphic cusp form or the Eisenstien series $E(z,1/2)$ and $π$ be a $SL(3,\mathbb{Z})$ Hecke-Maass cusp form with its Langlands parameter $μ$ in generic position i.e. away from Weyl chamber walls and away from self dual forms. We study an amplified second moment $\sum_{j} A(π_j)|L(1/2,π_j\times f)|^2$ and deduce the subconvexity bound \begin{equation*} L(1/2,π\times f)\ll_{f,ε} \|μ\|^{3/2-1/2022+ε}. \end{equation*} As a corollary, when $f=E(z,1/2)$, we also obtain the subconvexity bound \begin{equation*} L(1/2,π)\ll_ε \|μ\|^{3/4-1/4044+ε}. \end{equation*}
Let $M$ be a squarefree positive integer and $P$ a prime number coprime to $M$ such that $P\sim M^η$ with $0 < η< 2/5$. We simplify the proof of subconvexity bounds for $L(\frac{1}{2},f\otimesχ)$ when $f$ is a primitive holomorphic cusp form of level $P$ and $χ$ is a primitive Dirichlet character modulo $M$. These bounds are attained through an unamplified second moment method using a modified version of the delta method due to R. Munshi. The technique is similar to that used by Duke-Friedlander-Iwaniec save for the modification of the delta method.
We establish a Weyl-type subconvexity of $L(\tfrac{1}{2},f)$ for spherical Hilbert newforms $f$ with level ideal $\mathfrak{N}^2$, in which $\mathfrak{N}$ is required to be cube-free, and at any prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}$ with $\mathfrak{p}^2 \mid \mathfrak{N}$ the local representation generated by $f$ is not supercuspidal. The proof exploits a distributional version of Motohashi's formula over number fields developed by the first author, as well as Katz's work on hypergeometric sums over finite fields in the language of $\ell$-adic cohomology.
In this paper we work over $Γ_0(N)$, for any $N$ and write the spectral moment of a product of two distinct Rankin-Selberg convolutions at a general point on the critical line $\frac{1}{2}+it$ as a main term plus a sharp error term in the $t$ aspect and the spectral aspect. As a result we obtain hybrid Weyl type subconvexity results in the $t$ and spectral aspects. Also, for fixed modular forms $f$, $g$ of even weight $k\geq 4$ we show there exists a Maass cusp form $u_j$ such that $L(1/2, f\times u_j)$, $L(1/2, g\times u_j)$ are simultaneous non-zero.
A Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series is a Dirichlet series in several complex variables attached to a root system Phi. The number of variables equals the rank r of the root system, and the series satisfies a group of functional equations isomorphic to the Weyl group W of Phi. In this paper we construct a Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series over the rational function field using n-th order Gauss sums attached to the root system of type A_2. The basic technique is to construct a rational function in r variables invariant under a certain action of W, and use this to build a ``local factor'' of…
We generalize to Hilbert modular varieties of arbitrary dimension the work of W. Duke (Inventiones 1988) on the equidistribution of Heegner points and of primitive positively oriented closed geodesics in the Poincare upper half plane, subject to certain subconvexity results. We also prove vanishing results for limits of cuspidal Weyl sums associated with analogous problems for the Siegel upper half space of degree 2. In particular, these Weyl sums are associated with families of Humbert surfaces in Siegel 3-folds and of modular curves in these Humbert surfaces.
Let Phi be a reduced root system of rank r. A Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series for Phi is a Dirichlet series in r complex variables s_1,...,s_r, initially converging for Re(s_i) sufficiently large, which has meromorphic continuation to C^r and satisfies functional equations under the transformations of C^r corresponding to the Weyl group of Phi. Two constructions of such series are available, one based on summing products of n-th order Gauss sums, the second based on averaging a certain group action over the Weyl group. In this paper we study these constructions and the relationship betwee…
Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series are Dirichlet series in $r$ complex variables, with analytic continuation to $\mathbb{C}^r$ and a group of functional equations isomorphic to the Weyl group of a reduced root system of rank $r$. Such series may be defined for any global field $K$, but in the case when $K$ is an algebraic function field they are expected to be, up to a variable change, rational functions in several variables. We verify the rationality of these functions in the case when $K=\mathbb{F}_q(T)$, and describe the denominators and support of the numerators.
We prove a Weyl-exponent subconvex bound for any Dirichlet $L$-function of cube-free conductor. We also show a bound of the same strength for certain $L$-functions of self-dual $\mathrm{GL}_2$ automorphic forms that arise as twists of forms of smaller conductor.
We prove a Lindelöf-on-average upper bound for the fourth moment of Dirichlet $L$-functions of conductor $q$ along a coset of the subgroup of characters modulo $d$ when $q^*|d$, where $q^*$ is the least positive integer such that $q^2|(q^*)^3$. As a consequence, we finish the previous work of the authors and establish a Weyl-strength subconvex bound for all Dirichlet $L$-functions with no restrictions on the conductor.
We define a multiple Dirichlet series whose group of functional equations is the Weyl group of the affine Kac-Moody root system $\tilde{A}_n$, generalizing the theory of multiple Dirichlet series for finite Weyl groups. The construction is over the rational function field $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$, and is based upon four natural axioms from algebraic geometry. We prove that the four axioms yield a unique series with meromorphic continuation to the largest possible domain and the desired infinite group of symmetries.
We investigate the Shintani zeta functions associated to the prehomogeneous spaces, the example under consideration is the set of $2 \times 2\times 2$ integer cubes. We show that there are three relative invariants under a certain parabolic group action, they all have arithmetic nature and completely determine the equivalence classes. We show that the associated Shintani zeta function coincides with the $A_3$ Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series. Finally, we show that the set of semi-stable integer orbits maps finitely and surjectively to a certain moduli space.
Let $π$ be a $SL(3,\mathbb Z)$ Hecke-Maass cusp form, and let $χ$ be a primitive Dirichlet character modulo $M$, which we assume to be prime. In this note we revisit the subconvexity problem addressed in `The circle method and bounds for $L$-functions IV' and establish the following unconditional bound \begin{align*} L\left(\tfrac{1}{2},π\otimesχ\right)\ll M^{3/4-1/308+\varepsilon}. \end{align*}
In this paper and its sequel \cite{DPP}, we investigate the precise relationship between the quadratic affine Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series in the sense of \cite{CG1, BD}, and those defined axiomatically by Whitehead \cite{White2} and \cite{White1}. In particular, we show that the axiomatic quadratic Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series of type $D_{\scriptscriptstyle 4}^{\scriptscriptstyle (1)}$ over rational function fields of odd characteristic admits meromorphic continuation to the interior of the corresponding complexified Tits cone. We shall also determine the polar divisor of this…
Let $W$ be the Weyl group of a simply-laced affine Kac-Moody Lie group, excepting $\tilde{A}_n$ for $n$ even. We construct a multiple Dirichlet series $Z(x_1, \ldots x_{n+1})$, meromorphic in a half-space, satisfying a group $W$ of functional equations. This series is analogous to the multiple Dirichlet series for classical Weyl groups constructed by Brubaker-Bump-Friedberg, Chinta-Gunnells, and others. It is completely characterized by four natural axioms concerning its coefficients, axioms which come from the geometry of parameter spaces of hyperelliptic curves. The series constructed this w…
For $f$ a primitive holomorphic cusp form of even weight $k \geq 4$, level $N$, and $χ$ a Dirichlet character mod $Q$ with $(Q,N)=1$, we establish a new hybrid subconvexity bound for $L(1/2 + it, f_χ)$, which improves upon all known hybrid bounds. This is done via amplification and taking advantage of a shifted convolution sum of two variables defined and analyzed in a recent paper of Hoffstein and Hulse.
We construct multiple Dirichlet series in several complex variables whose coefficients involve quadratic residue symbols. The series are shown to have an analytic continuation and satisfy a certain group of functional equations. These are the first examples of an infinite collection of unstable Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series in greater than two variables.
Let Phi be a reduced root system of rank r. A Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series for Phi is a Dirichlet series in r complex variables s_1,...,s_r, initially converging for Re(s_i) sufficiently large, that has meromorphic continuation to C^r and satisfies functional equations under the transformations of C^r corresponding to the Weyl group of Phi. A heuristic definition of such series was given in [2], and they have been investigated in certain special cases in [2-6, 11-14]. In this paper we generalize results in [13] to construct Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series by a uniform method, and …
We formulate a conjecture for the local parts of Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series attached to root systems of type D. Our conjecture is analogous to the description of the local parts of type A series given by Brubaker, Bump, Friedberg, and Hoffstein in terms of Gelfand--Tsetlin patterns. Our conjecture is given in terms of patterns for irreducible representations of even orthogonal Lie algebras developed by Littelmann.
Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series, introduced by Brubaker, Bump, Chinta, Friedberg and Hoffstein, are expected to be Whittaker coefficients of Eisenstein series on metaplectic groups. Chinta and Gunnells constructed these multiple Dirichlet series for all the finite root systems using the method of averaging a Weyl group action on the field of rational functions. In this paper, we generalize Chinta and Gunnells' work and construct Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series for the root systems associated with symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras, and establish their functional equations and meromorph…
We study the structure of $p$-parts of Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series. In particular, we extend results of Chinta, Friedberg, and Gunnells and show, in the stable case, that the $p$-parts of Chinta and Gunnells agree with those constructed using the crystal graph technique of Brubaker, Bump, and Friedberg. In this vein, we give an explicit recurrence relation on the coefficients of the $p$-parts, which allows us to describe the support of the $p$-parts and address the extent to which they are uniquely determined.
For a semisimple Lie algebra admitting a good enumeration, we prove a parametrization for the elements in its Weyl group. As an application, we give a coordinate-free comparison between the crystal graph description (when it is known) and the Lie-theoretic description of the Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series in the stable range.
We develop the theory of Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series for root systems of type C. For an arbitrary root system of rank r and a positive integer n, these are Dirichlet series in r complex variables with analytic continuation and functional equations isomorphic to the associated Weyl group. In type C, they conjecturally arise from the Fourier-Whittaker coefficients of minimal parabolic Eisenstein series on an n-fold metaplectic cover of SO(2r+1). For any odd n, we construct an infinite family of Dirichlet series conjecturally satisfying the above analytic properties. The coefficients of …
Let $f$ be a Hecke-Maass cusp form for $SL_3(\mathbb{Z})$ and $χ$ a primitive Dirichlet character of prime power conductor $\mathfrak{q}=p^κ$ with $p$ prime and $κ\geq 10$. We prove a subconvexity bound $$ L\left(\frac{1}{2},π\otimes χ\right)\ll_{p,π,\varepsilon} \mathfrak{q}^{3/4-3/40+\varepsilon} $$ for any $\varepsilon>0$, where the dependence of the implied constant on $p$ is explicit and polynomial. We obtain this result by applying the circle method of Kloosterman's version, summation formulas of Poisson and Voronoi's type and a conductor lowering mechanism introduced by Munshi [14]. The…
We develop certain aspects of the theory of shifted multiple Dirichlet series and study their meromorphic continuations. These continuations are used to obtain explicit spectral first and second moments of Rankin-Selberg convolutions. One consequence is a Weyl type estimate for the Rankin-Selberg convolution of a holomorphic cusp form and a Maass form with spectral parameter $|t_j|\le T$, namely: $$ \left| L\left(\frac{1}{2}+ir, f\times u_j\right) \right| \ll_N T^{2/3+ε}, $$ uniformly, for $|r| \le T^{2/3}$, with the implied constant depending only on $f$ and the level $N$.
We sketch a Weyl creation operator approach to the Riemann Hypothesis; i.e.,arithmetic on the Weyl algebras with ergodic theory to transport operators. We prove that finite Hasse-Dirichlet alternating zeta functions or eta functions can be induced from a product of "creation operators". The latter idea is the result of considering complex quantum mechanics with complex time-space related concepts. Then we overview these ideas, with variations, which may provide a pathway that may settle RH; e.g., a Euler Factor analysis to study the quantum behavior of the integers as one pushes up the critica…
