We derive simple and explicit expressions for the high frequency spectrum of a classical accretion disc. Both stress-free and finite stress inner boundaries are considered. A classical accretion disc spectrum with a stress-free inner boundary departs from a Wien spectrum at large $ν$, scaling as $ν^{2.5}$ (as opposed to $ν^3$) times the usual exponential cut-off. If there is finite stress at the inner disc boundary, the maximum disc temperature generally occurs at this edge, even at relatively modest values of the stress. In this case, the high frequency spectrum is proportional to $ν^2$ times the exponential cut-off. If the temperature maximum is a local hot spot, instead of an axisymmetric ring, then an interior maximum produces a $ν^2$ prefactor while an edge maximum yields $ν^{1.5}$. Because of beaming effects, these latter findings should pertain to a classical relativistic disc. The asymptotics are in general robust and independent of the detailed temperature profile, provided only that the liberated free energy of differential rotation is dissipated locally, and may prove useful beyond the strict domain of classical disc theory. As observations continue to improve with time, our findings suggest the possibility of using the high energy spectral component of black hole candidates as a signature prediction of classical theory, as well as an diagnostic of the stress at the inner regions of an accretion disc.
We have analyzed AstroSat observations of the galactic micro-quasar system GRS 1915+105, when the system exhibited C-type Quasi-periodic Oscillations (QPOs) in the frequency range of 3.4-5.4 Hz. The broad band spectra (1-50 keV) obtained from simultaneous LAXPC and SXT can be well described by a dominant relativistic truncated accretion disk along with thermal Comptonization and reflection. We find that while the QPO frequency depends on the inner radii with a large scatter, a much tighter correlation is obtained when both the inner radii and accretion rate of the disk are taken into account. …
We present the spectrum of eigenfrequencies of axisymmetric acoustic-inertial oscillations of thin accretion disks for a Schwarzschild black hole modeled with a pseudo-potential. There are nine discrete frequencies, corresponding to trapped modes. Eigenmodes with nine or more radial nodes in the inner disk belong to the continuum, whose frequency range starts somewhat below the maximum value of the radial epicyclic frequency. The results are derived under the assumption that the oscillatory motion is parallel to the midplane of the disk.
We compare some predictions of Wagoner & Tandon (2021) with the results of the hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of Reynolds & Miller (2009). It appears that the MHD simulations were not run for long enough and the numerical damping was not small enough to produce the observed high-frequency QPOs (and the g-mode seen in the hydro simulations).
Low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) have been routinely observed in black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs). These LFQPOs can be explained by axisymmetric shock oscillation in accretion flow around a rotating black hole. We address the physical origin of Type-C LFQPOs in BHXRBs observed by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer satellite considering a minimum number of free parameters, namely, specific energy and specific angular momentum of the infalling matter for a given set of BH mass and spin parameter. We apply the solution for a large number of BH candidates to further strengthen the…
We have examined a sample of 13 sub-Eddington supermassive black holes hosted by galaxies spanning a variety of morphological classifications to further understand the empirical fundamental plane of black hole activity. This plane describes black holes from stellar-mass to supermassive and relates the mass of an accreting black hole and its radio and X-ray luminosities. A key factor in studying the fundamental plane is the turnover frequency, the frequency at which the radio continuum emission becomes optically thin. We measured this turnover frequency using new VLA observations combined, when…
We present results from fully relativistic three-dimensional core-collapse supernova (CCSN) simulations of a non-rotating 15 Msun star using three different nuclear equations of state (EoSs). From our simulations covering up to ~350 ms after bounce, we show that the development of the standing accretion shock instability (SASI) differs significantly depending on the stiffness of nuclear EoS. Generally, the SASI activity occurs more vigorously in models with softer EoS. By evaluating the gravitational-wave (GW) emission, we find a new GW signature on top of the previously identified one, in whi…
The geometry of the inner accretion flow in the hard and hard-intermediate states of X-ray binaries remains controversial. Using NICER observations of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 during the rising phase of its 2018 outburst, we study the evolution of the timing properties, in particular the characteristic variability frequencies of the prominent iron K$α$ line. Using frequency-resolved spectroscopy, we find that reflection occurs at large distances from the Comptonizing region in the bright hard state. During the hard- to soft transition, the variability properties suggest the r…
In this study, we examine the long term torque noise fluctuations of persistent Xray binaries Her X-1, Vela X-1, GX 301-2, CEN X-3, 4U 1538-53, OAO 1657-415 and 4U 1626-67 using the historical pulse frequency measurements provided by CGRO/BATSE and Fermi/GBM. We find that known disk-fed sources exhibit $1/ω^{2}$ red noise component in their power density spectra which is saturated over long timescales. On the other hand, wind-fed sources form a clear white noise component and the wind-fed sources with occasional transient disk formation imprint $1/ω$ type flicker noise. We discuss their long-t…
Revisiting the observation-theory confrontation in high-frequency QPOs:a new QPO in NGC 5506, intermediate mass black holes, and the crucial role of accretion state
Using the Insight-HXMT observations of GRS 1915+105 when it exhibits low frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs), we measure the evolution of the QPO frequency along with disk inner radius and mass accretion rate. We find a tight positive correlation between the QPO frequency and mass accretion rate. Our results extend the finding of previous work with AstroSat to a larger range of accretion rate with independent instruments and observations. Treating the QPO frequency of GRS 1915+105 as the relativistic dynamic frequency of a truncated disk, we are able to confirm the high spin nature of…
Through numerical simulations, it is predicted that the gravitational waves (GWs) reflect the characteristics of the core-collapse supernova (CCSN) explosion mechanism. There are multiple GW excitation processes that occur inside a star before its explosion, and it is suggested that the GWs originating from the CCSN have a mode for each excitation process in terms of time-frequency representation. Therefore, we propose an application of the Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT), which is a high-resolution time-frequency analysis method, to analyze these GW modes for theoretically probing and increasin…
We have studied the evolution of the Low Frequency Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (LFQPOs) during the rising phase of seven outbursts of the neutron star Soft X-ray Transient (SXT) Aql X$-$1 observed with the \textit{Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE)}. The frequency correlation between the low frequency break and the LFQPO sampled on the time scale of $\sim$2 days was seen. Except for the peculiar 2001 outburst, the frequency of the LFQPOs increased with time before the hard-to-soft state transition up to a maximum $ν_{max}$ at $\sim$31 Hz, a factor of $\sim$5 higher than those seen in black hol…
The Black Hole Binary source Swift J175.5-0127 remained in outburst for $\sim$ 12 years from May 2005 to April 2017. For most part of the outburst, the source remained in the Low Hard State (LHS) displaying transitions to softer states only towards the end of the outburst for short periods of time. Quasi periodic Oscillations (QPOs) were observed in the Power Density Spectrum (PDS) only during the decay. A soft thermal component was required to model the spectrum in LHS, which does not conform to the generally accepted disc truncation theory. In this work, we attempt to obtain a clearer pictur…
We report on the phase-coherent timing analysis of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar IGR J17591-2342, using Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) data taken during the outburst of the source between 2018 August 15 and 2018 October 17. We obtain an updated orbital solution of the binary system. We investigate the evolution of the neutron star spin frequency during the outburst, reporting a refined estimate of the spin frequency and the first estimate of the spin frequency derivative ($\dotν \sim -7\times 10^{-14}$ Hz s$^{-1}$), confirmed independently from the modelling of the…
Variable features in black hole X-ray Binaries (BH-XRBs) are observed in different energy ranges and time scales. The physical origin of different spectral states in BH-XRBs and their relations with the underlying accretion disc are still elusive. To investigate the intermediate state of BH-XRBs during outburst, we simulate a truncated accretion disc around a Kerr black hole using a general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamical (GRMHD) framework under axisymmetry with adaptively refined mesh. Additionally, we have also carried out radiative transfer calculations for understanding the implication…
The rather elusive High-Frequency Quasi-Periodic Oscillations(HFQPO) observed in the X-ray lightcurve of black holes have been seen in a wide range of frequencies, even within one source. It is also notable to have been detected in "pairs" of HFQPOs with a close to integer ratio between the frequencies. The aim of this paper is to investigate some of the possible observable that we could obtain from having the Rossby Wave Instability (RWI) active in the accretion disc surrounding the compact object. Using the newly developed GR-AMRVAC code able to follow the evolution of the RWI in a full gene…
Low Frequency Quasi-Periodic Oscillations or LF QPOs are ubiquitous in BH X-ray binaries and provide strong constraints on the accretion-ejection processes. Although several models have been proposed so far, none has been proven to reproduce all observational constraints and no consensus has emerged yet. We make the conjecture that disks are threaded by a large scale vertical magnetic field that splits it into two radial zones. In the inner Jet Emitting Disk (JED), a near equipartition field allows to drive powerful self-collimated jets, while beyond a transition radius, the disk magnetization…
Black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs) display a wide range of variability phenomena, from long duration spectral state changes to short-term broadband variability and quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). A particularly puzzling aspect is the production of QPOs, which -- if properly understood -- could be used as a powerful diagnostic tool of black hole accretion and evolution. In this work we analyse a high resolution three-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulation of a geometrically thin accretion disk which is tilted by $65^{\circ}$ with respect to the black hole spin axis.…
Flickering, and more specifically aperiodic broad-band variability, is an important phenomenon used in understanding the geometry and dynamics of accretion flows. Although the inner regions of accretion flows are known to generate variability on relatively fast timescales, the broad-band variability generated in the outer regions have mostly remained elusive due to their long intrinsic variability timescales. Ultra-compact AM CVn systems are relatively small when compared to other accreting binaries and are well suited to search and characterise low frequency variability. Here we present the f…
We consider three corrections to the disk sizes estimated at a given frequency using accretion models. They are due to a color correction, a disk truncation at an inner radius larger than the innermost stable circular orbit, and disk winds, which we apply to the standard disk model. We apply our results to the estimates of the disk sizes based on microlensing. We find these three effects combined can explain the long-standing problem of the disk sizes from microlensing being larger than those estimated using the standard disk model (i.e., that without accounting for the above effects). In part…
The evolution of the C-type low frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) and associated time lag in transient black hole sources as a function of time can be explained by variation of the Compton cloud size in a Two Component Advective Flow solution (TCAF). A similar study of a persistent source, GRS~1915+105, has not been attempted. We fit the evolution of QPOs with propagatory oscillating shock (POS) solution for two sets of so-called $χ$-state observations and find that the shock steadily recedes with almost constant velocity when QPO frequency is decreasing and the spectrum is harden…

The Galactic microquasar GRS 1915+105 shows rich variability which is categorized into different classes. In this paper, we report temporal and spectral analysis of GRS 1915+105 to study the properties of the accretion flow when the light curve is showing $θ$ class variability. For this purpose, we use the LAXPC data from the Target of Opportunity observations of India's first multi-wavelength astronomy satellite AstroSat. The $θ$ class is marked by the recurrent appearance of U-shaped regions in the light curve, where the photon count rate first decreases rapidly and then increases slowly. Fo…
The correlation between the frequency and the absolute value of the frequency derivative of the kilohertz QPOs observed for the first time from 4U 1636-53 is a simple consequence and indicator of the existence of a non-Keplerian rotation rate in the accretion disk boundary layer. This paper interprets the observed correlation, showing that the observations provide strong evidence in support of the fundamental assumption of disk accretion models around slow rotators, that the boundary layer matches the Keplerian disk to the neutron star magnetosphere.
We investigate the frequency and amplitude of the millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations (mHz QPOs) in the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary (NS LMXB) 4U 1636-53 using Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations. We find that no mHz QPOs appear when the source is in the hard spectral state. We also find that there is no significant correlation between the frequency and the fractional rms amplitude of the mHz QPOs. Notwithstanding, for the first time, we find that the absolute RMS amplitude of the mHz QPOs is insensitive to the parameter Sa, which measures the position of the source in the colour…
Disc accretion on to a black hole is often misaligned from its spin axis. If the disc maintains a significant magnetic field normal to its local plane, we show that dipole radiation from Lense-Thirring precessing disc annuli can extract a significant fraction of the accretion energy, sharply peaked towards small disc radii $R$ (as $R^{-17/2}$ for fields with constant equipartition ratio). This low-frequency emission is immediately absorbed by surrounding matter or refracted towards the regions of lowest density. The resultant mechanical pressure, dipole angular pattern, and much lower matter d…
NGC 4993, as a host galaxy of the electromagnetic counterpart of the first gravitational-wave detection of a binary neutron-star merger, was observed by many powerful telescopes from radio to $γ$-ray waveband. The weak nuclear activities of NGC 4993 suggest that it is a low-luminosity active galactic nuclear (LLAGN). We build the multi-waveband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of NGC 4993 from literatures. We find that the radio spectrum at $\sim 100-300$ GHz is much steeper than that of low-frequency waveband (e.g., 6-100 GHz), where this break was also found in the supermassive black hol…
The observed variability of X-ray binaries over a wide range of time-scales can be understood in the framework of a stochastic propagation model, where viscous fluctuations at different radii induce accretion rate variability that propagate inwards to the X-ray producing region. The scenario successfully explains the power spectra, the linear rms-flux relation as well as the time-lag between different energy photons. The predictions of this model have been obtained using approximate analytical solutions or empirically motivated models which take into account the effect of these propagating var…
In this paper we present a method to study the frequency shift of signals sent from near a Schwarzschild black hole that grows or shrinks through accretion. We construct the numerical solution of Einstein's equations sourced by a spherical shell of scalar field, with positive energy density to simulate the growth and with negative energy density to simulate the shrink of the black hole horizon. We launch a distribution of null rays at various time slices during the accretion and estimate their energy along their own trajectories. Spatially the bundles of photons are distributed according to th…
In this paper we continue the first ever study of magnetized mini-disks coupled to circumbinary accretion in a supermassive binary black hole (SMBBH) approaching merger reported in Bowen et al. 2018. We extend this simulation from 3 to 12 binary orbital periods. We find that relativistic SMBBH accretion acts as a resonant cavity, where quasi-periodic oscillations tied to the the frequency at which the black hole's orbital phase matches a non-linear $m=1$ density feature, or ``lump'', in the circumbinary accretion disk permeate the system. The rate of mass accretion onto each of the mini-disks …
We present an energy dependent X-ray variability study of the 2010 outburst of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1659-152 with the Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT). The broad-band noise components and the quasi periodic oscillations (QPO) observed in the power spectra show a strong and varied energy dependence. Combining Swift XRT data with data from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, we report, for the first time, an rms spectrum (fractional rms amplitude as a function of energy) of these components in the 0.5-30 keV energy range. We find that the strength of the low-frequency component (< 0.1 Hz) d…
The power spectrum of the X-ray fluctuations of accreting black holes often consists of two broad humps. We quantitatively investigate the hypothesis that the lower frequency hump orig- inates from variability in a truncated thin accretion disc, propagating into a large scale-height inner hot flow which, in turn, itself is the origin of the higher frequency hump. We extend the propagating mass accretion rate fluctuations model PROPFLUC to accommodate double hump power spectra in this way. Furthermore, we extend the model to predict the cross-spectrum between two energy bands in addition to the…
We proposed that the spectral evolution of transient X-ray binaries (XrB) is due to an interplay between two flows: a standard accretion disk (SAD) in the outer parts and a jet-emitting disk (JED) in the inner parts. We showed in previous papers that the spectral evolution in X-ray and radio during the 2010-2011 outburst of GX339-4 can be recovered. We now investigate the presence of low frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) during an X-ray outburst, and address the possible correlation between the frequencies of these LFQPOs and the transition radius between the two flows, rJ. We sel…
The well known black hole candidate H~1743-322 exhibited temporal and spectral variabilities during several outbursts. Daily variation of the accretion rates and the flow geometry change on a daily basis during each of the outbursts could be understood very well using the recent implementation of two component advective flow (TCAF) solution of the viscous transonic flow equations as an additive table model in XSPEC. This has dramatically improved our understanding about the accretion flow dynamics. Most interestingly, the solution allows to treat mass of the black hole candidate as a free para…
Black hole X-ray transients show a variety of state transitions during their outburst phases, characterized by changes in their spectral and timing properties. In particular, power density spectra (PDS) show quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs) that can be related to the accretion regime of the source. We looked for type-C QPOs in the disc-dominated state (i.e. the high soft state) and in the ultra-luminous state in the RXTE archival data of 12 transient black hole X-ray binaries known to show QPOs during their outbursts. We detected 6 significant QPOs in the soft state that can be classified as…
We report the results from a recent 133 ks XMM-Newton observation of a highly super-Eddington narrow-line Type-1 QSO RX J0439.6-5311. This source has one of the steepest AGN hard X-ray slopes, in addition to a prominent and smooth soft X-ray excess. Strong variations are found throughout the 0.3 to 10 keV energy range on all time-scales covered by the observation, with the soft excess mainly showing low frequency variations below 0.1 mHz while the hard X-rays show stronger variability at higher frequencies. We perform a full set of spectral-timing analysis on the X-ray data, including a simult…
