The Galactic microquasar GRS 1915+105 shows rich variability which is categorized into different classes. In this paper, we report temporal and spectral analysis of GRS 1915+105 to study the properties of the accretion flow when the light curve is showing $θ$ class variability. For this purpose, we use the LAXPC data from the Target of Opportunity observations of India's first multi-wavelength astronomy satellite AstroSat. The $θ$ class is marked by the recurrent appearance of U-shaped regions in the light curve, where the photon count rate first decreases rapidly and then increases slowly. For our analysis, we use U-shaped regions of first two orbits (02345 and 02346) on 2016 March 04. In both of the cases, the dynamic Power Density Spectra (PDS) showed significant power at around $4-5$ Hz, suggesting the presence of a low-frequency Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) around that frequency interval. The QPO frequency is found to increase with time when the enhancement of the energy flux also takes place. From the evolution of the spectra, we determine the evolution of the accretion flow parameters in both of these observations. Fitting the spectra with the transonic flow solution based Two-Component Advective Flow (TCAF) model in $4-25$ keV energy band shows that the Keplerian disk accretion rate rises with the rise in the radiation intensity, while the location of the centrifugal pressure driven shock front decreases. In both these data, a gradual increment of power-law photon index with intensity is observed suggesting the progressive softening of the source.
AstroSat spectra of the black hole system GRS 1915+105 during the heartbeat state (with a varying oscillation period from 150 to 100 secs) were analysed using a truncated relativistic disc model along with a Comptonization component. Spectra were fitted for segments of length ~ 24 secs. The oscillation can be described as coordinated variations of the accretion rate, Comptonised flux, and the inner disc radius, with the latter ranging from 1.235-5 gravitational radii. Comparison with results from the $χ$ and Intermediate states shows that while the accretion rate and the high energy photon ind…
From the analysis of more than 92 ks of data obtained with the laxpc instrument on board Astrosat we have detected a clear high-frequency QPO whose frequency varies between 67.4 and 72.3 Hz. In the classification of variability classes of GRS 1915+105, at the start of the observation period the source was in class omega and at the end the variability was that of class mu: both classes are characterized by the absence of hard intervals and correspond to disk-dominated spectra. After normalization to take into account time variations of the spectral properties as measured by X-ray hardness, the …
IGR J17091--3624 is a transient galactic black hole which has a distinct quasi-periodic variability known as `heartbeat', similar to the one observed in GRS 1915+105. In this paper, we report the results of $\sim 125$ ks \textit{AstroSat} observations of this source during the 2016 outburst. For the first time a double peaked QPO (DPQ) is detected in a few time segments of this source with a difference of $δf ~\sim12$ mHz between the two peaks. The nature of the DPQ was studied based on hardness ratios and using the static as well as the dynamic power spectrum. Additionally, a low frequency (2…
In this work, we present a $\sim$90 ks continuous monitoring of the Galactic micro-quasar GRS 1915+105 with AstroSat when the source undergoes a major transition from a non-variable, $χ$ class (similar to radio-quiet $χ$ class) to a structured, large amplitude, periodic heartbeat state (similar to $ρ$ class). We show that such transition takes place via an intermediate state when the large-amplitude, irregular variability of the order of hundreds of seconds in the soft X-ray band turned into a 100-150 sec regular, structured, nearly periodic flares. The properties of a strong low-frequency qua…
We present the first quick look analysis of data from nine {\it AstroSat}'s LAXPC observations of GRS 1915+105 during March 2016 when the source had the characteristics of being in Radio-quiet $χ$ class. We find that a simple empirical model of a disk blackbody emission, with Comptonization and a broad Gaussian Iron line can fit the time averaged 3--80 keV spectrum with a systematic uncertainty of 1.5\% and a background flux uncertainty of 4\%. A simple deadtime-corrected Poisson noise level spectrum matches well with the observed high frequency power spectra till 50 kHz and as expected the da…
We present a comprehensive study of GRS 1915+105 in wide energy band ($0.5-60$ keV) using AstroSat observations during the period of $2016-2019$. The MAXI X-ray lightcurve of the source shows rise and decay profiles similar to canonical outbursting black holes. However, the source does not follow the exemplary 'q'-diagram in the Hardness-Intensity Diagram (HID). Model independent analysis of lightcurves suggests that GRS 1915+105 displays various types of variability classes ($δ,χ,ρ,κ,ω$ and $γ$). We also report possible transitions from one class to another ($χ\rightarrowρ,ρ\rightarrowκ$ via …
We report the results of AstroSat observations of GRS 1915$+$105 obtained using 100 ks guaranteed-time (GT) during the soft state. The Color-Color Diagram (CCD) indicates a variability class of $δ$ with the detection of High Frequency QPO (HFQPO) in the power density spectra (PDS). The HFQPO is seen to vary in the frequency range of $67.96 - 70.62$ Hz with percentage rms $\sim 0.83 - 1.90$ % and significance varying from $1.63 - 7.75$. The energy dependent power spectra show that the HFQPO features are dominant only in $6 - 25$ keV energy band. The broadband energy spectra ($0.7 - 50$ keV) of …
We present a comprehensive temporal and spectral analysis of the 'softer' variability classes ($i.e.$, $θ$, $β$, $δ$, $ρ$, $κ$, $ω$ and $γ$) of the source GRS 1915+105 observed by AstroSat during $2016-2021$ campaign. Wide-band ($3-60$ keV) timing studies reveal the detection of High Frequency Quasi-periodic Oscillations (HFQPOs) with frequency of $68.14-72.32$ Hz, significance of $2.75-11 σ$, and rms amplitude of $1.48-2.66\%$ in $δ$, $κ$, $ω$ and $γ$ variability classes. Energy dependent power spectra impart that HFQPOs are detected only in $6-25$ keV energy band and rms amplitude is found t…

We have analyzed AstroSat observations of the galactic micro-quasar system GRS 1915+105, when the system exhibited C-type Quasi-periodic Oscillations (QPOs) in the frequency range of 3.4-5.4 Hz. The broad band spectra (1-50 keV) obtained from simultaneous LAXPC and SXT can be well described by a dominant relativistic truncated accretion disk along with thermal Comptonization and reflection. We find that while the QPO frequency depends on the inner radii with a large scatter, a much tighter correlation is obtained when both the inner radii and accretion rate of the disk are taken into account. …
In $2016-17$, the Galactic transient black hole candidate GRS 1716-249 exhibited an outburst event after a long period of quiescence of almost 23 years. The source remained in the outbursting phase for $\sim 9$ months. We study the spectral and temporal properties of the source during this outburst using archival data from four astronomy satellites, namely MAXI, Swift, NuSTAR and AstroSat. Initial spectral analysis is done using combined disk black body and power-law models. For a better understanding of the accretion flow properties, we studied spectra with the physical two component advectiv…
We present a study of far and near-ultraviolet emission from the accretion disk in a powerful Seyfert 1 galaxy IC4329A using observations performed with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard AstroSat. These data provide the highest spatial resolution and deepest images of IC4329A in the far and near UV bands acquired to date. The excellent spatial resolution of the UVIT data has allowed us to accurately separate the extended emission from the host galaxy and the AGN emission in the far and near UV bands. We derive the intrinsic AGN flux after correcting for the Galactic and internal…
Broadband spectral studies of Type-I X-ray bursts can put strong constraints on the physics of burst spectra as well as their interaction with the environment. We present the results obtained from the broadband time-resolved spectroscopy of 15 thermonuclear bursts detected simultaneously from the neutron star atoll source 4U 1636-536 using LAXPC and SXT onboard AstroSat. During the observations with AstroSat, the Low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) 4U 1636-536 is observed to show a modest spectral evolution within the island state. The broadband burst spectra are observed to show an excess in additio…
We analyse the aperiodic flaring features, also known as shots, observed in Cyg X-1 in the 0.1-80 keV energy band using a 6.39 ks simultaneous observation with AstroSat and NICER. We detect 49 simultaneous shots in the soft and hard X-ray bands with NICER and AstroSat-LAXPC, respectively. We observe the shot profile for the first time in soft X-rays (0.1-3 keV), which shows a spectral peak at $\sim$2 keV. Using time-averaged spectroscopy, we measured the truncation of the inner accretion disk at $6.7\pm0.2$ gravitational radii. The shot-phase resolved spectroscopy allowed us to identify the or…
We performed the timing and spectral studies of a Z source GX 17+2 observed from Astrosat LAXPC instrument. Cross-Correlation function (CCF) was performed using soft (3-5 keV) and hard (16-40 keV) X -ray bands across the hardness intensity diagram and found correlated/anti-correlated hard and soft lags which seems to be a common feature in these sources. We performed spectral analysis for few of these observations and found no consistent variation in the spectral parameters during the lags, however 10-40% change was noticed in diskbb and power-law components in few of observations. For the fir…
Using the Insight-HXMT observations of GRS 1915+105 when it exhibits low frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs), we measure the evolution of the QPO frequency along with disk inner radius and mass accretion rate. We find a tight positive correlation between the QPO frequency and mass accretion rate. Our results extend the finding of previous work with AstroSat to a larger range of accretion rate with independent instruments and observations. Treating the QPO frequency of GRS 1915+105 as the relativistic dynamic frequency of a truncated disk, we are able to confirm the high spin nature of…
Low Mass X-Ray Binaries (LMXBs) are systems in which a compact object accretes from a binary companion star via an accretion disk. The X-ray properties of LMXBs show strong variability over timescales ranging from milliseconds to decades, much of which is tied to the extreme environment of the inner accretion disk, hence an understanding of this behaviour is key to understanding how matter behaves in such an environment. GRS 1915+105 and MXB 1730-335 are two LMXBs which show particularly unusual variability. GRS 1915+105 shows a large number of distinct classes of second-to-minute scale variab…
We study accretion disk-corona connection in Seyfert 1 galaxies using simultaneous UV/X-ray observations of NGC 4593 (July 14-18, 2016) and NGC 7469 (October 15-19, 2017) performed with AstroSat. We use the X-ray (0.5-7.0 keV) data acquired with the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) and the UV (FUV: 130-180 nm, NUV: 200-300 nm) data obtained with the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). We also use the contemporaneous Swift observations of NGC 4593 and demonstrate AstroSat's capability for X-ray/UV correlation studies. We performed UV/X-ray cross-correlation analysis using the Interpolated and the …
We present five simultaneous UV/X-ray observations of IC4329A by AstroSat, performed over {a five-month} period. We utilize the excellent spatial resolution of the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard AstroSat to reliably separate the intrinsic AGN flux from the host galaxy emission and to correct for the Galactic and internal reddening, as well as the contribution from the narrow and broad-line regions. We detect large-amplitude UV variability, which is unusual for a large black hole mass AGN, like IC4329A, over such a small period. In fact, the fractional variability amplitude is la…
We perform a comparative spectro-temporal analysis on the variability classes of GRS 1915+105 and IGR J17091-3624 to draw inferences regarding the underlying accretion flow mechanism. The $ν$, as well as C2 class Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer observation, have been considered for analysis. We investigate the intensity variation of the source in different energy domains that correspond to different components of the accretion flow and infer the relative dominance of these flow components during the dip/flare events. We correlate the dependence of the dynamic photon index ($Θ$) with intensities in…
We present broadband X-ray spectral analysis of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1348--630, performed using five AstroSat observations. The source was in the soft spectral state for the first three and in the hard state for the last two observations. The three soft state spectra were modelled using a relativistic thin accretion disc with reflection features and thermal Comptonization. Joint fitting of the soft state spectra constrained the spin parameter of the black hole $a_*$ $>$ 0.97 and the disc inclination angle $i$ = 32.9$\substack{+4.1 \\ -0.6}$ degrees. The bright and faint hard state…
GRS 1915$+$105 is a stellar-mass black hole that is well known for exhibiting at least 12 distinct classes of X-ray variability and correlated multi-wavelength behavior. Despite such extraordinary variability, GRS 1915$+$105 remained one of the brightest sources in the X-ray sky. However, in early 2019, the source became much fainter, apparently entering a new accretion state. Here, we report the results of an extensive, year-long monitoring campaign of GRS 1915$+$105 with the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. During this interval, the flux of GRS 1915$+$105 gradually diminished; the observed co…
GRS 1915+105 is a transient black hole X-ray binary consistently emitting 10-100% of the Eddington luminosity in the X-ray band during the last three decades until mid-2018 when the source luminosity suddenly decreased by an order of magnitude. This phase was followed by a change to a state with even lower average X-ray fluxes never seen before during the outburst but presenting renewed flaring activity at different wavelengths. Nevertheless, the mean fluxes were still in decline. GRS 1915+105 has the longest orbital period known among low-mass X-ray binaries, the largest accretion disk size, …
We report on a 120 ks Chandra/HETG spectrum of the black hole GRS 1915+105. The observation was made during an extended and bright soft state in June, 2015. An extremely rich disk wind absorption spectrum is detected, similar to that observed at lower sensitivity in 2007. The very high resolution of the third-order spectrum reveals four components to the disk wind in the Fe K band alone; the fastest has a blue-shift of v = 0.03c. Broadened re-emission from the wind is also detected in the first-order spectrum, giving rise to clear accretion disk P Cygni profiles. Dynamical modeling of the re-e…
We present the detection of type C quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) along with upper harmonic at respective frequencies of $\sim0.6$ Hz and $\sim1.2$ Hz in the single AstroSat observation taken during the 2016 outburst of the low-mass black hole X-ray binary H~1743--322. These frequencies are found to be shifted by $\sim0.4$ Hz for the QPO and $\sim0.8$ Hz for the upper harmonic with respect to that found in the simultaneous \textit{XMM-Newton} and \textit{NuSTAR} observation taken five days later than the AstroSat observation, indicating a certain geometrical change in the system. However, th…
The microquasar GRS~1915+105 is known for its spectacular discrete ejections. They occur unexpectedly, thus their inception escapes direct observation. It has been shown that the X-ray flux increases in the hours leading up to a major ejection. In this article, we consider the serendipitous interferometric monitoring of a modest version of a discrete ejection described in Reid et al. (2014) that would have otherwise escaped detection in daily radio light curves. The observation begins $\sim 1$ hour after the onset of the ejection, providing unprecedented accuracy on the estimate of the ejectio…
GRS 1915+105 being one of the brightest transient black hole binary (BHB) in the X-rays, offers a unique test-bed for the study of the connection between accretion and ejection mechanisms in BHBs. In particular, this source can be used to study the accretion disc wind and how it depends on the state changes in BHBs. Our aim is to investigate the origin and geometry of the accretion disc wind in GRS 1915+105. We analysed the spectra of GRS 1915+105 in the soft $ϕ$ and hard $χ$ classes, using the high resolution spectroscopy offered by Chandra HETGS. In the soft state, we find a series of wind a…
We present an in-depth spectral and timing analysis of the Black Hole binary 4U 1630-472 during 2016 and 2018 outbursts as observed by \textit{AstroSat} and \textit{MAXI}. The extensive coverage of the outbursts with \textit{MAXI} is used to obtain the Hardness Intensity Diagram (HID). The source follows a `c'-shaped profile in agreement with earlier findings. Based on the HIDs of previous outbursts, we attempt to track the evolution of the source during a `super'-outburst and `mini'-outbursts. We model the broadband energy spectra ($0.7-20.0$ keV) of \textit{AstroSat} observations of both out…
The cyclotron line feature in the X-ray spectrum of the accretion powered pulsar Her X-1 has been observed and monitored for over three decades. The line energy exhibited a slow secular decline over the period 1995-2014, with a possible (not confirmed) indication of a reversal thereafter. Recent works have shown that the temporal evolution of the line energy may be modelled as a flattening after an earlier decrease until MJD 55400 ($\pm200)$. In this work, we present the results of ASTROSAT observations in the context of earlier data and offer a common interpretation through a detailed study o…
Soft X-ray transients are systems that are detected when they go into an outburst, wherein their X-ray luminosity increases several orders of magnitude. These outbursts are markers of the poorly understood change in the spectral state of these systems from low/hard state to high/soft state. We report the spectral properties of one such soft X-ray transient: MAXI J0637$-$430, with data from the \textit{SXT} and \textit{LAXPC} instruments on-board \textit{AstroSat} mission. The source was observed for a total of $\sim$ 60 ks over two observations on 8$^{th}$ and 21$^{st}$ November, 2019 soon aft…
We explore the nonlinear properties of IGR J17091-3624 in the line of the underlying behaviour for GRS 1915+105, following correlation integral method. We find that while the latter is known to reveal the combination of fractal (or even chaotic) and stochastic behaviours depending on its temporal class, the former mostly shows stochastic behaviour. Therefore, although several observations argue IGR J17091-3624 to be similar to GRS 1915+105 with common temporal classes between them, underlying nonlinear time series analyses offer differently. Nevertheless, the Poisson noise to $rms$ variation v…
SwiftJ0243.6+6124, the first Galactic ultra-luminous X-ray pulsar, was observed during its 2017-2018 outburst with \emph{AstroSat} at both sub- and super-Eddington levels of accretionwith X-ray luminosities of $L_{X}{\sim}7{\times}10^{37}$ and $6{\times}10^{38}$$ergs^{-1}$, respectively. Our broadband timing and spectral observations show that X-ray pulsations at ${\sim}9.85\rm{s}$ have been detected up to 150keV when the source was accreting at the super-Eddington level. The pulse profiles are a strong function of both energy and source luminosity, showing a double-peaked profile with pulse frac…
GRS 1915+105 has been in a bright flux state for more than 2 decades, but in 2018 a significant drop in flux was observed, partly due to changes in the central engine along with increased X-ray absorption. The aim of this work is to explore how X-ray spectro-polarimetry can be used to derive the basic geometrical properties of the absorbing and reflecting matter. In particular, the expected polarisation of the radiation reflected off the disc and the putative outflow is calculated. We use \textit{NuSTAR} data collected after the flux drop to derive the parameters of the system from hard X-ray …
The evolution of the C-type low frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) and associated time lag in transient black hole sources as a function of time can be explained by variation of the Compton cloud size in a Two Component Advective Flow solution (TCAF). A similar study of a persistent source, GRS~1915+105, has not been attempted. We fit the evolution of QPOs with propagatory oscillating shock (POS) solution for two sets of so-called $χ$-state observations and find that the shock steadily recedes with almost constant velocity when QPO frequency is decreasing and the spectrum is harden…
