The gravitational waves emitted by binary systems with extreme-mass ratios carry unique astrophysical information that can only be detected by space-based detectors like eLISA. To that end, a very accurate modelling of the system is required. The gravitational self-force program, which has been fully developed in the Lorenz gauge, is the best approach we have so far. However, the computations required would be done more efficiently if we could work in other gauges, like the Regge-Wheeler (RW) one in the case of Schwarzschild black holes. In this letter we present a new scheme, based on the Particle-without-Particle formulation of the field equations, where the gravitational self-force can be obtained from just solving individual wave-type equations like the master equations of the RW gauge. This approach can help to tackle the yet unsolved Kerr case.
A unified field theory of all known basic forces and elementary particles is built based on the postulates of gauge invariance and coordinate independence along with general conformal scaling symmetry. The hyper-spin charge of a unified hyper-spinor field is conjectured to correlate with the dimension of hyper-spacetime. The minimal dimension of hyper-spacetime for the unity of quarks and leptons in the standard model is found to be $D_h=19$ with a bimaximal symmetry. A unified fundamental interaction is governed by hyper-spin gauge symmetry SP(1,$D_h$-1). We show gravitational origin of gauge…
We present numerical results for the gravitational self-force and redshift invariant calculated in the Regge-Wheeler and Easy gauges for circular orbits in a Schwarzschild background, utilizing the regularization framework introduced by Pound, Merlin, and Barack. The numerical calculation is performed in the frequency domain and requires the integration of a single second-order ODE, greatly improving computation times over more traditional Lorenz gauge numerical methods. A sufficiently high-order, analytic expansion of the Detweiler-Whiting singular field is gauge-transformed to both the Regge…
Continuing our analytic computation of the first-order self-force contribution to Detweiler's redshift variable we provide the exact expressions of the ninth and ninth-and-a-half post-Newtonian terms.
In planar tilted Dirac cone systems, the tilt parameter can be made space-dependent by either a perpendicular displacement field, or by chemical substitution in certain systems. We show that the symmetric partial derivative of the tilt parameter generates non-Abelian synthetic gauge fields in these systems. The small velocity limit of these gauge forces corresponds to Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings. At the classical level, the same symmetric spatial derivatives of tilt contribute to conservative, Lorentz-type and friction-like forces. The velocity dependent forces are odd with res…
In this, the first of two companion papers, we present a method for finding the gravitational self-force in a modified radiation gauge for a particle moving on a geodesic in a Schwarzschild or Kerr spacetime. An extension of an earlier result by Wald is used to show the spin-weight $\pm 2$ perturbed Weyl scalar ($ψ_0$ or $ψ_4$) determines the metric perturbation outside the particle up to a gauge transformation and an infinitesimal change in mass and angular momentum. A Hertz potential is used to construct the part of the retarded metric perturbation that involves no change in mass or angular …
The standard model particles can be gauged in an anomaly free way by three possible gauge symmetries namely ${L_e-L_μ}$, ${L_e-L_τ}$, and ${L_μ-L_τ}$. Of these, ${L_e-L_μ}$ and ${L_e-L_τ}$ forces can mediate between the Sun and the planets and change the perihelion precession of planetary orbits. It is well known that a deviation from the $1/r^2$ Newtonian force can give rise to a perihelion advancement in the planetary orbit, for instance, as in the well known case of Einstein's gravity which was tested from the observation of the perihelion advancement of the Mercury. We consider the long ra…
We formulate a Hamiltonian description of the orbital motion of a point particle in Kerr spacetime for generic (eccentric, inclined) orbits, which accounts for the effects of the conservative part of the gravitational self-force. This formulation relies on a description of the particle's motion as geodesic in a certain smooth effective spacetime, in terms of (generalized) action-angle variables. Clarifying the role played by the gauge freedom in the Hamiltonian dynamics, we extract the gauge-invariant information contained in the conservative self-force. We also propose a possible gauge choice…
We present a geometrical derivation of the relativistic dynamics of the superfluid inner crust of a neutron star. The resulting model is analogous to the Hall-Vinen-Bekarevich-Khalatnikov hydrodynamics for a single-component superfluid at finite temperature, but particular attention should be paid to the fact that some fraction of the neutrons are locked to the motion of the protons in nuclei. This gives rise to an ambiguity in the definition of the two currents (the normal and the superfluid one) on which the model is built, a problem that manifests itself as a chemical gauge freedom of the t…
We apply our method of indirect integration, described in Part I, at fourth order, to the radial fall affected by the self-force. The Mode-Sum regularisation is performed in the Regge-Wheeler gauge using the equivalence with the harmonic gauge for this orbit. We consider also the motion subjected to a self-consistent and iterative correction determined by the self-force through osculating stretches of geodesics. The convergence of the results confirms the validity of the integration method. This work complements and justifies the analysis and the results appeared in Int. J. Geom. Meth. Mod. Ph…
We develop the first model for extreme mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs) into a rotating massive black hole driven by the gravitational self-force. Our model is based on an action angle formulation of the method of osculating geodesics for eccentric, equatorial (i.e., spin-aligned) motion in Kerr spacetime. The forcing terms are provided by an efficient spectral interpolation of the first-order gravitational self-force in the outgoing radiation gauge. We apply a near-identity (averaging) transformation to eliminate all dependence of the orbital phases from the equations of motion, while maintaining…
Extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs) will be key sources for LISA. However, accurately extracting system parameters from a detected EMRI waveform will require self-force calculations at second order in perturbation theory, which are still in a nascent stage. One major obstacle in these calculations is the strong divergences that are encountered on the worldline of the small object. Previously, it was shown by one of us [Phys. Rev. D 95, 104056 (2017)] that a class of "highly regular" gauges exist in which the singularities have a qualitatively milder form, promising to enable more efficient nu…
We present an algorithm for calculating the metric perturbations and gravitational self-force for extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs) with eccentric orbits. The massive black hole is taken to be Schwarzschild and metric perturbations are computed in Lorenz gauge. The perturbation equations are solved as coupled systems of ordinary differential equations in the frequency domain. Accurate local behavior of the metric is attained through use of the method of extended homogeneous solutions and mode-sum regularization is used to find the self-force. We focus on calculating the self-force with suff…
With a view to developing a formalism that will be applicable at second perturbative order, we devise a new practical scheme for computing the gravitational self-force experienced by a point mass moving in a curved background spacetime. Our method works in the frequency domain and employs the effective-source approach, in which a distributional source for the retarded metric perturbation is replaced with an effective source for a certain regularized self-field. A key ingredient of the calculation is the analytic determination of an appropriate puncture field from which the effective source and…
Inspirals of stellar-mass objects into massive black holes will be important sources for the space-based gravitational-wave detector LISA. Modelling these systems requires calculating the metric perturbation due to a point particle orbiting a Kerr black hole. Currently, the linear perturbation is obtained with a metric reconstruction procedure that puts it in a "no-string" radiation gauge which is singular on a surface surrounding the central black hole. Calculating dynamical quantities in this gauge involves a subtle procedure of "gauge completion" as well as cancellations of very large numbe…
We present an expression for the gravitational self-force correction to the geodetic spin precession of a spinning compact object with small, but non-negligible mass in a bound, equatorial orbit around a Kerr black hole. We consider only conservative back-reaction effects due to the mass of the compact object ($m_1$) thus neglecting the effects of its spin $s_1$ on its motion, i.e, we impose $s_1 \ll G m_1^2/c$ and $m_1 \ll m_2$, where $m_2$ is the mass parameter of the background Kerr spacetime. We encapsulate the correction to the spin precession in $ψ$, the ratio of the accumulated spin-pre…
