We study the entanglement spectrum of the Hubbard model at half filling on a kagome lattice. The entanglement spectrum is defined by the set of eigenvalues of reduced thermal density matrix, which is naturally obtained in the framework of the dynamical mean-field theory. Adopting the cluster dynamical mean-field theory combined with continuous-time auxiliary-field Monte Carlo method, we calculate the entanglement spectrum for a three-site triangular cluster in the kagome Hubbard model. We find that the results at the three-particle sector well captures the qualitative nature of the system. In particular, the eigenvalue of the reduced density matrix, corresponding to the chiral degrees of freedom, exhibits characteristic temperature scale T_{\rm chiral}, below which a metallic state with large quasiparticle mass is stabilized. The entanglement spectra at different particle number sectors also exhibit characteristic changes around T_{\rm chiral}, implying the development of inter-triangular ferromagnetic correlations in the correlated metallic regime.
We study two a priori unrelated constructions: the spectrum of edge modes in a band topological insulator or superconductor with a physical edge, and the ground state entanglement spectrum in an extended system where an edge is simulated by an entanglement bipartition. We prove an exact relation between the ground state entanglement spectrum of such a system and the spectrum edge modes of the corresponding spectrally flattened Hamiltonian. In particular, we show that degeneracies of the entanglement spectrum correspond to gapless edge modes.
We extend the analytical arguments of Metlitski and Grover (arXiv:1112.5166) to compute the entanglement spectrum and entanglement entropy of coplanar antiferromagnets with $SO(3)$ order parameter symmetry. The low-energy states in the entanglement spectrum exhibit the tower of states structure, as is expected for systems that undergo spontaneous symmetry breaking. Our results are consistent with numerical results on the triangular and Kagomé lattice.
We study the entanglement spectrum of a Chern insulator on a cylinder geometry, with the cut separating the two partitions taken parallel to the cylinder edge, at varying distances from the edge. In contrast to similar studies on a torus, there is only one cut, and hence only one virtual edge mode in the entanglement spectrum. The entanglement spectrum has a gap when the cut is close enough to the physical edge of the cylinder such that the edge mode spatially extends over the cut. This effect is suppressed for parameter choices where the edge mode is sharply localized at the edge. In the extr…
We study the entanglement spectrum of noninteracting band insulators, which can be computed from the two-point correlation function, when restricted to one part of the system. In particular, we analyze a type of partitioning of the system that maintains its full translational symmetry, by tracing over a subset of local degrees of freedom, such as sublattice sites or spin orientations. The corresponding single-particle entanglement spectrum is the band structure of an entanglement Hamiltonian in the Brillouin zone. We find that the hallmark of a nontrivial topological phase is a gapless entangl…
We study the bulk entanglement of a series of gapped ground states of spin ladders, representative of the Haldane phase. These ground states of spin $S/2$ ladders generalize the valence bond solid ground state. In the case of spin 1/2 ladders, we study a generalization of the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki and Nersesyan-Tsvelik states and fully characterize the bulk entanglement Hamiltonian. In the case of general spin $S$ we argue that in the Haldane phase the bulk entanglement spectrum of a half integer ladder is either gapless or possess a degenerate ground state. For ladders with integer valu…
It is now commonly believed that the ground state entanglement spectrum (ES) exhibits universal features characteristic of a given phase. In this letter, we show that this belief is false in general. Most significantly, we show that the entanglement Hamiltonian can undergo quantum phase transitions in which its ground state and low energy spectrum exhibit singular changes, even when the physical system remains in the same phase. For broken symmetry problems, this implies that the ES and the Renyi entropies can mislead entirely, while for quantum Hall systems the ES has much less universal cont…
We investigate the non-universal part of the orbital entanglement spectrum (OES) of the nu = 1/3 fractional quantum Hall effect (FQH) ground-state with Coulomb interactions. The non-universal part of the spectrum is the part that is missing in the Laughlin model state OES whose level counting is completely determined by its topological order. We find that the OES levels of the Coulomb interaction ground-state are organized in a hierarchical structure that mimic the excitation-energy structure of the model pseudopotential Hamiltonian which has a Laughlin ground state. These structures can be ac…
We examine the real space renormalization group method of finding \textit{excited eigenstate} (RSRG-X) of the XX spin-1/2 chain, from entanglement perspectives. Eigenmodes of entanglement Hamiltonian, especially the maximally entangled mode and corresponding entanglement energies are studied and compared with predictions of RSRG-X. Our numerical results demonstrate the accuracy of the RSRG-X method in the strong disorder limit, and quantify its error when applied to weak disorder regime. Overall, our results validate the RSRG-X method qualitatively, but also show that its accuracy decreases wi…
Sensitivity of entanglement Hamiltonian spectrum to boundary conditions is considered as a phase detection parameter for delocalized-localized phase transition. By employing one-dimensional models that undergo delocalized-localized phase transition, we study the shift in the entanglement energies and the shift in the entanglement entropy when we change boundary conditions from periodic to anti-periodic. Specifically, we show that both these quantities show a change of several orders of magnitude at the transition point in the models considered. Therefore, this shift can be used to indicate the…
We show that the Haldane phase of S=1 chains is characterized by a double degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum. The degeneracy is protected by a set of symmetries (either the dihedral group of $π$-rotations about two orthogonal axes, time-reversal symmetry, or bond centered inversion symmetry), and cannot be lifted unless either a phase boundary to another, "topologically trivial", phase is crossed, or the symmetry is broken. More generally, these results offer a scheme to classify gapped phases of one dimensional systems. Physically, the degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum can be obser…
We studied numerically the distribution of the entanglement Hamiltonian eigenvalues in two one-dimensional free fermion models and the typical three-dimensional Anderson model. We showed numerically that this distribution depends on the phase of the system: In the delocalized phase it is centered around very small values and in the localized phase, picks of the distribution goes to larger values. We therefore, based on the distribution of entanglement Hamiltonian eigenvalues, explain the behavior of the entanglement entropy in different phases. In addition we propose the smallest magnitude ent…
We study in this work the ground state entanglement properties of finite XX spin-1/2 chains with random couplings, using Jordan-Wigner transformation. We divide the system into two parts and study reduced density matrices (RDMs) of its subsystems. Due to the free-fermion nature of the problem, the RDMs take the form of that of a free fermion thermal ensemble. Finding spectrum of the corresponding entanglement Hamiltonian and corresponding eigenvectors, and comparing them with real space renormalization group (RSRG) treatment, we establish the validity of the RSRG approach for entanglement in t…
We study the entanglement spectra of many particle systems in states which are closely related to products of Slater determinants or products of permanents, or combinations of the two. Such states notably include the Laughlin and Jain composite fermion states which describe most of the observed conductance plateaus of the fractional quantum Hall effect. We identify a set of 'Entanglement Wave Functions' (EWF), for subsets of the particles, which completely describe the entanglement spectra of such product wave functions, both in real space and in particle space. A subset of the EWF for the Lau…
We show that the entanglement spectrum can be used to define non-local order in gapless spin systems. We find a gap that fully separates a series of generic, high `entanglement energy' levels, from a flat band of levels with specific multiplicities that uniquely define the ground-state, and remains finite in the thermodynamic limit. We pick the appropriate set of quantum numbers, and then partition the system in this space. This partition corresponds to a very non-local real-space cut. Despite the fact that the Laughlin state is bulk gapped while the antiferromagnetic spin chain state is bulk …
We investigate the entanglement spectrum of the ground state of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard model. The topological phases of the model can be identified by degeneracy of the largest eigenvalues of entanglement spectrum. The study of the periodic boundary condition is enough to obtain the phase diagram of the model, without the consideration of the open boundary condition case. Physical interpretation about the bulk-edge correspondence in the entanglement spectrum is presented. The method of the entanglement spectrum can be applicable in studying other topological phases of matter.
We consider the reflected entropy and the associated entanglement spectrum for free fermions reduced to two intervals in 1+1 dimensions. Working directly in the continuum theory the reflected entropy can be extracted from the spectrum of a singular integral equation whose kernel is determined by the known free fermion modular evolved correlation function. We find the spectrum numerically and analytically in certain limits. For intervals that almost touch the reflected entanglement spectrum approaches the spectrum of the thermal density matrix. This suggests that the reflected entanglement spec…
In this paper, we obtain an exact formula for the entanglement entropy of the ground state and all excited states of the Kitaev model. Remarkably, the entanglement entropy can be expressed in a simple separable form S=S_G+S_F, with S_F the entanglement entropy of a free Majorana fermion system and S_G that of a Z_2 gauge field. The Z_2 gauge field part contributes to the universal "topological entanglement entropy" of the ground state while the fermion part is responsible for the non-local entanglement carried by the Z_2 vortices (visons) in the non-Abelian phase. Our result also enables the c…
We examine the time evolution of the entanglement spectrum of a small subsystem of a non-integrable spin chain following a quench from a product state. We identify signatures in this entanglement spectrum of the distinct dynamical velocities (related to entanglement and operator spreading) that control thermalization. We show that the onset of level repulsion in the entanglement spectrum occurs on different timescales depending on the "entanglement energy", and that this dependence reflects the shape of the operator front. Level repulsion spreads across the entire entanglement spectrum on time…
We show that the entanglement spectrum associated with a certain class of strongly correlated many-body states --- the wave functions proposed by Laughlin and Jain to describe the fractional quantum Hall effect --- can be very well described in terms of a simple model of non-interacting (or weakly interacting) composite fermions.
How do we uniquely identify a quantum phase, given its ground state wave-function? This is a key question for many body theory especially when we consider phases like topological insulators, that share the same symmetry but differ at the level of topology. The entanglement spectrum has been proposed as a ground state property that captures characteristic edge excitations. Here we study the entanglement spectrum for topological band insulators. We first show that insulators with topological surface states will necessarily also have protected modes in the entanglement spectrum. Surprisingly, how…
We study the ground state of a gapped quantum many-body system whose entanglement entropy $S_A$ can be expressed as $S_A = a|\partial A| - γ$, where $a, γ$ are some constants and $|\partial A|$ is an area of the subsystem $A$. By using a recently proved operator extension of strong subadditivity of entropy,[I. H. Kim, J. Math. Phys. 53, 122204 (2012)] we show that certain linear combination of the real-space entanglement spectrum has a small correlation with almost any local operator. Our result implies that there exists a structure relating the real-space entanglement spectrum over different …
We formulate dynamical phase transitions in subsystems embedded in larger quantum systems. Introducing the entanglement echo as an overlap of the initial and instantaneous entanglement ground states, we show its analytic structure after a quench provides natural definition of dynamical phase transitions in the subsystem. These transitions come in two varieties, the entanglement-type transitions and the bulk-type Loschmidt transitions. The entanglement-type transitions arise from periodic reorganization of quantum correlations between the subsystem and its environment, manifesting in instantane…
We consider two-dimensional states of matter satisfying an uniform area law for entanglement. We show that the topological entanglement entropy is equal to the minimum relative entropy distance from the reduced state to the set of thermal states of local models. The argument is based on strong subadditivity of quantum entropy. For states with zero topological entanglement entropy, in particular, the formula gives locality of the states at the boundary of a region as thermal states of local Hamiltonians. It also implies that the entanglement spectrum of a two-dimensional region is equal to the …
We investigate of the relationship between the entanglement and subsystem Hamiltonians in the perturbative regime of strong coupling between subsystems. One of the two conditions that guarantees the proportionality between these Hamiltonians obtained by using the nondegenerate perturbation theory within the first order is that the unperturbed ground state has a trivial entanglement Hamiltonian. Furthermore, we study the entanglement Hamiltonian of the Heisenberg ladders in a time-dependent magnetic field using the degenerate perturbation theory, where couplings between legs are considered as a…
We study the entanglement spectrum of a translationally-invariant lattice system under a random partition, implemented by choosing each site to be in one subsystem with probability $p\in[0, 1]$. We apply this random partitioning to a translationally-invariant (i.e., clean) topological state, and argue on general grounds that the corresponding entanglement spectrum captures the universal behavior about its disorder-driven transition to a trivial localized phase. Specifically, as a function of the partitioning probability $p$, the entanglement Hamiltonian $H_{A}$ must go through a topological ph…
We study entanglement between the spin components of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) ground state by calculating the full entanglement spectrum and the corresponding von Neumann entanglement entropy. The entanglement spectrum is effectively modeled by a generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) of non-interacting electrons, which may be approximated by a canonical ensemble at the BCS critical temperature. We further demonstrate that the entanglement entropy is jointly proportional to the pairing energy and to the number of electrons about the Fermi surface (an area law). Furthermore, the entangleme…
Calculation of topological invariants for crystalline systems is well understood in reciprocal space, allowing for the topological classification of a wide spectrum of materials. In this work, we present a new technique based on the entanglement spectrum, which can be used to identify the hidden topology of systems without translational invariance. By training a neural network to distinguish between trivial and topological phases using the entanglement spectrum obtained from crystalline or weakly disordered phases, we can predict the topological phase diagram for generic disordered systems. Th…
The bulk polarization is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant characterizing non-interacting systems in one dimension with chiral or particle-hole symmetries. We show that the bulk polarization can always be determined from the single-particle entanglement spectrum, even in the absence of symmetries that quantize it. In the symmetric case, the known relation between the bulk polarization and the number of virtual topological edge modes is recovered. We use the bulk polarization to compute Chern numbers in 1D and 2D, which illuminates their known relation to the entanglement spectrum. Further…
We study the quench dynamics of entanglement spectra in the Kitaev chain with variable-range pairing quantified by power-law decay rate $α$. Considering the post-quench Hamiltonians with flat bands, we demonstrate that the presence of entanglement-spectrum crossings during its dynamics is able to characterize the topological phase transitions (TPTs) in both short-range ($α$ > 1) or long-range ($α$ < 1) sector. Properties of entanglement-spectrum dynamics are revealed for the quench protocols in the long-range sector or with $α$ as the quench parameter. In particular, when the lowest upper-half…
Bipartite entanglement measures are fantastic tools to investigate quantum phases of correlated electrons. Here, I analyze the entanglement spectrum of **gapped** two-leg quantum Heisenberg ladders on a periodic ribbon partitioned into two identical periodic chains. Comparison of various entanglement entropies proposed in the literature is given. The entanglement spectrum is shown to closely reflect the low-energy gapless spectrum of each individual edge, for any sign of the exchange coupling constants. This extends the conjecture initially drawn for Fractional Quantum Hall systems to the fiel…
A quantum phase transition is usually achieved by tuning physical parameters in a Hamiltonian at zero temperature. Here, we demonstrate that the ground state of a topological phase itself encodes critical properties of its transition to a trivial phase. To extract this information, we introduce a partition of the system into two subsystems both of which extend throughout the bulk in all directions. The resulting bulk entanglement spectrum has a low-lying part that resembles the excitation spectrum of a bulk Hamiltonian, which allows us to probe a topological phase transition from a single wave…
We study the entanglement spectrum of topological systems hosting non-Abelian anyons. Akin to energy levels of a Hamiltonian, the entanglement spectrum is composed of symmetry multiplets. We find that the ratio between different eigenvalues within one multiplet is universal and is determined by the anyonic quantum dimensions. This result is a consequence of the conservation of the total topological charge. For systems with non-Abelian topological order, this generalizes known degeneracies of the entanglement spectrum, which are hallmarks of topological states. Experimental detection of these e…
The entanglement between two parts of a many-body system can be characterized in detail by the entanglement spectrum. Focusing on gapped phases of one-dimensional systems, we show how this spectrum is dominated by contributions from the boundary between the parts. This contradicts the view of an "entanglement Hamiltonian" as a bulk entity. The boundary-local nature of the entanglement spectrum is clarified through its hierarchical level structure, through the combination of two single-boundary spectra to form a two-boundary spectrum, and finally through consideration of dominant eigenfunctions…
Several algorithms have been proposed to calculate the spatial entanglement spectrum from high order Renyi entropies. In this work we present an alternative approach for computing the entanglement spectrum with quantum Monte Carlo for both continuum and lattice Hamiltonians. This method provides direct access to the matrix elements of the spatially reduced density matrix and we determine an estimator that can be used in variational Monte Carlo as well as other Monte Carlo methods. The algorithm is based on using a generalization of the Swap operator, which can be extended to calculate a genera…
In a recent work by Gong and Ueda (arXiv:1710.05289), the classification of (1+1)-dimensional quench dynamics for the ten Altland-Zirnbauer classes is achieved, and entanglement-spectrum crossings of the time-dependent states for the topological classes (AIII, DIII, CII, BDI, and D) are discovered as a consequence of the bulk-edge correspondence. We note that, their classification scheme relies on the limit that the energy spectrum of the post-quench Hamiltonian is flat, because any finite band dispersion leads to the break down of time-reversal and chiral symmetries for the parent Hamiltonian…
We study the properties of the entanglement spectrum in gapped non-interacting non-Hermitian systems, and its relation to the topological properties of the system Hamiltonian. Two different families of entanglement Hamiltonians can be defined in non-Hermitian systems, depending on whether we consider only right (or equivalently only left) eigenstates or a combination of both left and right eigenstates. We show that their entanglement spectra can still be computed efficiently, as in the Hermitian limit. We discuss how symmetries of the Hamiltonian map into symmetries of the entanglement spectru…
Entanglement between blocks of energy-levels is analysed for systems exhibiting s-wave and p-wave superconductivity. We study the entanglement entropy and spectrum of a block of $\ell$ levels around the Fermi point, and also between particles and holes, in the ground state of Richardson-type Hamiltonians. The maximal entropy grows with the number of levels $L$ approximately as $1/2\log(L)$, as suggested by the permutational symmetry of the state at large coupling. The number of levels in the block around the Fermi surface with maximal entanglement is proposed as a measure of the number of {\em…
Using exact diagonalization for non-interacting systems and density matrix renormalization group for interacting systems we show that Li and Haldane's conjecture on the correspondence between the low-lying many-particle excitation spectrum and the entanglement spectrum holds for disordered ballistic one-dimensional many-particle systems. In order to demonstrate the correspondence we develop a computational efficient way to calculate the ES of low-excitation of non-interacting systems. We observe and explain the presence of an unexpected shell structure in the excitation structure. The low-lyin…
We study the real-space entanglement spectrum for fractional quantum Hall systems, which maintains locality along the spatial cut, and provide evidence that it possesses a scaling property. We also consider the closely-related particle entanglement spectrum, and carry out the Schmidt decomposition of the Laughlin state analytically at large size.
The entanglement spectrum, i.e., the full distribution of Schmidt eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix, contains more information than the conventional entanglement entropy and has been studied recently in several many-particle systems. We compute the disorder-averaged entanglement spectrum, in the form of the disorder-averaged moments of the reduced density matrix, for a contiguous block of many spins at the random-singlet quantum critical point in one dimension. The result compares well in the scaling limit with numerical studies on the random XX model and is also expected to describe t…
We study how the entanglement spectrum relaxes to its steady state in one-dimensional quadratic systems after a quantum quench. In particular we apply the saddle point expansion to the dimerized chains and 1-D p-wave superconductors. We find that the entanglement spectrum always exhibits a power-law relaxation superimposed with oscillations at certain characteristic angular frequencies. For the dimerized chains, we find that the exponent $ν$ of the power-law decay is always $3/2$. For 1-D p-wave superconductors, however, we find that depending on the initial and final Hamiltonian, the exponent…
Li and Haldane conjectured and numerically substantiated that the entanglement spectrum of the reduced density matrix of ground-states of time-reversal breaking topological phases (fractional quantum Hall states) contains information about the counting of their edge modes when the ground-state is cut in two spatially distinct regions and one of the regions is traced out. We analytically substantiate this conjecture for a series of FQH states defined as unique zero modes of pseudopotential Hamiltonians by finding a one to one map between the thermodynamic limit counting of two different entangl…
Entanglement is a central feature of many-body quantum systems and plays a unique role in quantum phase transitions. In many cases, the entanglement spectrum, which represents the spectrum of the density matrix of a bipartite system, contains valuable information beyond the sole entanglement entropy. Here we investigate the entanglement spectrum of the long-range XXZ model. We show that within the critical phase it exhibits a remarkable self-similarity. The breakdown of self-similarity and the transition away from a Luttinger liquid is consistent with renormalization group theory. Combining th…
We explore both pure and mixed states Floquet dynamical quantum phase transitions (FDQFTs) in the one-dimensional p-wave superconductor with a time-driven pairing phase. In the Fourier space, the model is recast to the non-interacting quasi-spins subjected to a time-dependent effective magnetic field. We show that FDQFTs occur within a range of driving frequency without resorting to any quenches. Moreover, FDQFTs appear in the region where quasi-spins are in the resonance regime. In the resonance regime, the population completely cycles the population between the spin down and up states. Addit…
The study of the entanglement entropy and entanglement spectrum has proven to be very fruitful in identifying topological phases of matter. Typically, one performs numerical studies of finite-size systems. However, there are few rigorous results for finite-size systems. We revisit the problem of determining the rank of the "particle entanglement spectrum" of the Laughlin states. We reformulate the problem into a problem concerning the ideal of symmetric polynomials that vanish under the formation of several clusters of particles. We give an explicit generating family of this ideal, and we prov…
We analyse the entanglement entropy properties of a two-dimensional p-wave superconductor with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, which displays a rich phase-space that supports non-trivial topological phases, as the chemical potential and the Zeeman term are varied. We show that the entanglement entropy and its derivatives clearly signal the topological transitions and provides a sensible signature of each topological phase. We separately analyse the contributions to the entanglement entropy that are proportional to or independent of the perimeter of the system, as a function of the Hamiltonian coup…
We derive the distribution of eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix of a block of length l in a one-dimensional system in the scaling regime. The resulting "entanglement spectrum" is described by a universal scaling function depending only on the central charge of the underlying conformal field theory. This prediction is checked against exact results for the XX chain. We also show how the entanglement gap closes when l is large.
The topological classification of a series of frustration-induced spin-gap phases in the spin-1/2 ferromagnetic--antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain with next-nearest-neighbour interaction reported in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 82, 064703 (2013) is confirmed using two kinds of entanglement spectra defined by different divisions of the whole chain. For the numerical calculation, the iDMRG method is used. The results are consistent with the valence bond solid picture proposed in the previous paper.
We study the momentum space entanglement spectra of bosonic and fermionic formulations of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain with analytical methods and exact diagonalization. We investigate the behavior of the entanglement gaps, present in both partitions, across quantum phase transitions in the XXZ chain. In both cases, finite size scaling reveals that the entanglement gap closure does not occur at the physical transition points. For bosons, we find that the entanglement gap observed in [Thomale et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 116805 (2010)] depends on the scaling dimension of the conformal field theory a…

The polaron concept captures physical situations involving an itinerant quantum particle (excitation) that interacts strongly with bosonic degrees of freedom and becomes heavily boson-dressed. While the Gerlach-Löwen theorem rules out the occurrence of nonanalyticities of ground-state-related quantities for a broad class of polaron models, examples were found in recent years of sharp transitions pertaining to strongly momentum-dependent interactions of an excitation with dispersionless (zero-dimensional) phonons. On the example of a lattice model with Peierls-type excitation-phonon interaction…
The classification of electron systems according to their topology has been at the forefront of condensed matter research in recent years. It has been found that systems of the same symmetry, previously thought of as equivalent, may in fact be distinguished by their topological properties. Moreover, the non-trivial topology found in some insulators and superconductors has profound physical implications that can be observed experimentally and can potentially be used for applications. However, characterizing a system's topology is not always a simple task, even for a theoretical model. When tran…
Entanglement related properties work as nice fingerprint of the quantum many-body wave function. However, those of fermionic models are hard to evaluate in standard numerical methods because they suffer from finite size effects. We show that a so-called density embedding theory (DET) can evaluate them without size scaling analysis in comparably high quality with those obtained by the large-size density matrix renormalization group analysis. This method projects the large scale original many-body Hamiltonian to the small number of basis sets defined on a local cluster, and optimizes the choice …
