We propose a simple microscopic model to numerically investigate the stability of a two dimensional fractional topological insulator (FTI). The simplest example of a FTI consists of two decoupled copies of a Laughlin state with opposite chiralities. We focus on bosons at half filling. We study the stability of the FTI phase upon addition of two coupling terms of different nature: an interspin interaction term, and an inversion symmetry breaking term that couples the copies at the single particle level. Using exact diagonalization and entanglement spectra, we numerically show that the FTI phase is stable against both perturbations. We compare our system to a similar bilayer fractional Chern insulator. We show evidence that the time reversal invariant system survives the introduction of interaction coupling on a larger scale than the time reversal symmetry breaking one, stressing the importance of time reversal symmetry in the FTI phase stability. We also discuss possible fractional phases beyond $ν= 1/2$.
We provide a detailed study of the Abelian quasiholes of $ν=1/2$ bosonic fractional quantum Hall states on the torus geometry and in fractional Chern insulators. We find that the density distribution of a quasihole in a fractional Chern insulator can be related to that of the corresponding fractional quantum Hall state by choosing an appropriate length unit on the lattice. This length unit only depends on the lattice model that hosts the fractional Chern insulator. Therefore, the quasihole size in a fractional Chern insulator can be predicted for any lattice model once the quasihole size of th…
We respond to the comments expressed by L. D'Alessio in arXiv:1412.3481 on our work "Floquet Fractional Chern Insulators" [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 156801 (2014)]. We confirm the central result that the ground state of the effective Hamiltonian is an interacting fractional Chern insulator.
Fractional topological insulators are electronic systems that carry fractionally charged excitations, conserve charge and are symmetric to reversal of time. In this review we introduce the basic essential concepts of the field, and then survey theoretical understanding of fractional topological insulators in two and three dimensions. In between, we discuss the case of "two and a half dimensions", the fractional topological insulators that may form on the two dimensional surface of an unfractionalized three dimensional topological insulator. We focus on electronic systems and emphasize properti…
Long-range interactions drive some of the rich phenomenology of quasiparticle collective states in the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) regime. We test for analogues in models of fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) derived from a screened Coulomb interaction. We find that the uniform FCI liquid is surprisingly robust to long-range interactions but gives way to a unidirectional charge density wave (CDW) of fractionally charged quasiparticles with increased screening length. Our results show that FCIs offer a robust and important platform for studying quasiparticles collective states.
Motivated by work on the bulk topological proximity effect and the topological bootstrap, we consider two coupled layers of quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators with opposite signs of time-reversal breaking, which leads to a trivial band insulator at half-filling. We study the impact of interactions in this model within slave rotor theory, which leads to a layer-selective Mott transition, resulting in a fractionalized quantum anomalous Hall insulator QAH$^*$ where a Chern band insulator coexists with a chiral spin liquid. We also compute the edge electron spectral function in the vicinity o…
We review various features of interacting Abelian topological phases of matter in two spatial dimensions, placing particular emphasis on fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) and fractional topological insulators (FTIs). We highlight aspects of these systems that challenge the intuition developed from quantum Hall physics - for instance, FCIs are stable in the limit where the interaction energy scale is much larger than the band gap, and FTIs can possess fractionalized excitations in the bulk despite the absence of gapless edge modes.
We formulate a Chern-Simons composite fermion theory for Fractional Chern Insulators (FCIs), whereby bare fermions are mapped into composite fermions coupled to a lattice Chern-Simons gauge theory. We apply this construction to a Chern insulator model on the kagome lattice and identify a rich structure of gapped topological phases characterized by fractionalized excitations including states with unequal filling and Hall conductance. Gapped states with the same Hall conductance at different filling fractions are characterized as realizing distinct symmetry fractionalization classes.
We argue that topological Kondo insulators can also have 'intrinsic' topological order associated with fractionalized excitations on their surfaces. The hydridization between the local moments and conduction electrons can weaken near the surface, and this enables the local moments to form spin liquids. This co-exists with the conduction electron surface states, realizing a surface fractionalized Fermi liquid. We present mean-field solutions of a Kondo-Heisenberg model which display such surfaces.
Fractional Chern insulators are new realizations of fractional quantum Hall states in lattice systems without orbital magnetic field. These states can be mapped onto conventional fractional quantum Hall states through the Wannier state representation (Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 126803 (2011)). In this paper, we use the Wannier state representation to construct the pseudopotential Hamiltonians for fractional Chern insulators, which are interaction Hamiltonians with certain ideal model wavefunctions as exact ground states. We show that these pseudopotential Hamiltonians can be approximated by short-r…
Fractional topological insulators of Cooper pairs induced by proximity effect
We investigate the problem of intertwined orders in fractional Chern insulators by considering lattice fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states arising from pairing of composite fermions in the square-lattice Hofstadter model. At certain filling fractions, magnetic translation symmetry ensures the composite fermions form Fermi surfaces with multiple pockets, leading to the formation of finite-momentum Cooper pairs in the presence of attractive interactions. We obtain mean-field phase diagrams exhibiting a rich array of striped and topological phases, establishing paired lattice FQH states as an id…
Fractional topological insulators (FTI) are electronic topological phases in $(3+1)$ dimensions enriched by time reversal (TR) and charge $U(1)$ conservation symmetries. We focus on the simplest series of fermionic FTI, whose bulk quasiparticles consist of deconfined partons that carry fractional electric charges in integral units of $e^\ast=e/(2n+1)$ and couple to a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_{2n+1}$ gauge theory. We propose massive symmetry preserving or breaking FTI surface states. Combining the long-ranged entangled bulk with these topological surface states, we deduce the novel topological orde…
We perform an exact-diagonalization study of quasihole excitations for the two-component Halperin $(221)$ state in the lowest Landau level and for several $ν=1/3$ bosonic fractional Chern insulators in topological flat bands with Chern number $|C|=2$. Properties including the quasihole size, charge, and braiding statistics are evaluated. For the Halperin $(221)$ model state, we observe isotropic quasiholes with a clear internal structure, and obtain the quasihole charge and statistics matching the theoretical values. Interestingly, we also extract the same quasihole size, charge, and braiding …
Using the infinite density matrix renormalization group method on an infinite cylinder geometry, we characterize the $1/3$ fractional Chern insulator state in the Haldane honeycomb lattice model at $ν=1/3$ filling of the lowest band and check its stability. We investigate the chiral and topological properties of this state through (i) its Hall conductivity, (ii) the topological entanglement entropy, (iii) the $U(1)$ charge spectral flow of the many body entanglement spectrum, and (iv) the charge of the anyons. In contrast to numerical methods restricted to small finite sizes, the infinite cyli…
We develop a first quantization description of fractional Chern insulators that is the dual of the conventional fractional quantum Hall (FQH) problem, with the roles of position and momentum interchanged. In this picture, FQH states are described by anisotropic FQH liquids forming in momentum-space Landau levels in a fluctuating magnetic field. The fundamental quantum geometry of the problem emerges from the interplay of single-body and interaction metrics, both of which act as momentum-space duals of the geometrical picture of the anisotropic FQH effect. We then present a novel broad class of…
We study fermions on a triangular lattice model that exhibits topological flatbands characterized by nonzero Chern numbers. Our scheme stems from the well-known Hofstadter model but the next-nearest-neighbor hopping is introduced, which is crucial for tuning the lowest band to be nearly flat. Differing from previous proposals with the necessity of multiparticle interactions, we consider the more realistic long-range dipolar interaction combined with two-body short-range attractions between fermions. We show the realization of the non-Abelian $ν=1/2$ Moore-Read fractional Chern insulators, and …
The sliding Luttinger liquids (LL) approach is applied to study fractional topological insulators (FTI). We show that FTI is the low energy fixed point of the theory for realistic spin-orbit and electron-electron interaction. We find that the topological phase pertains in the presence of interaction that breaks the spin invariance and its boundaries are even extended by those terms. Finally we show that one dimensional chiral anomaly in the LL leads to the emergence of topological Chern-Simons terms in the effective gauge theory of the FTI state.

In the presence of crystalline symmetries, certain topological insulators present a filling anomaly: a mismatch between the number of electrons in an energy band and the number of electrons required for charge neutrality. In this paper, we show that a filling anomaly can arise when corners are introduced in $C_n$-symmetric crystalline insulators with vanishing polarization, having as consequence the existence of corner-localized charges quantized in multiples of $\frac{e}{n}$. We characterize the existence of this charge systematically and build topological indices that relate the symmetry rep…
Motivated by the close analogy with the fractional quantum Hall states (FQHSs), fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) are envisioned as strongly correlated, incompressible states emerging in a fractionally filled, (nearly) flat band with non-trivial Chern number. Built upon this vision, fractional topological insulators (FTIs) have been proposed as being composed of two independent copies of the FCI with opposite Chern numbers for different spins, preserving the time-reversal symmetry as a whole. An important question is if the correlation between electrons with different spins can be really igno…
We investigate an interaction-driven transition between crystalline and liquid states of strongly correlated spinless fermions within topological flat bands at low density (with filling factors $ν=1/5$, $1/7$, $1/9$). Using exact diagonalization for finite size systems with periodic boundary conditions, we distinguish different phases, whose stability depends on the interaction range, controlled by the screening parameter of the Coulomb interaction. The crystalline phases are identified by a crystallization strength, calculated from the Fourier transforms of pair correlation density, while the…
We devise local lattice models whose ground states are model fractional Chern insulators---Abelian and non-Abelian topologically ordered states characterized by exact ground state degeneracies at any finite size and infinite entanglement gaps. Most saliently, we construct exact parent Hamiltonians for two distinct families of bosonic lattice generalizations of the $\mathcal{Z}_k$ parafermion quantum Hall states: (i) color-entangled fractional Chern insulators at band filling fractions $ν=k/(\mathcal{C}+1)$ and (ii) nematic states at $ν=k/2$, where $\mathcal{C}$ is the Chern number of the lowes…
We investigate the stability of the one-dimensional limit of $ν=1/3$ Laughlin-like fractional Chern insulator with respect to the interband interaction. We propose a construction for the excitations in the infinite-interaction case and show that the energy gap remains finite in the thermodynamic limit. Next, by means of exact diagonalization and Density Matrix Renormalization Group approaches, we consider deviations from ideal dimerization and show that they reduce the stability of the FCI-like states. Finally, to show that our approach is not restricted to one model, we identify the dimer str…
