We investigate the problem of intertwined orders in fractional Chern insulators by considering lattice fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states arising from pairing of composite fermions in the square-lattice Hofstadter model. At certain filling fractions, magnetic translation symmetry ensures the composite fermions form Fermi surfaces with multiple pockets, leading to the formation of finite-momentum Cooper pairs in the presence of attractive interactions. We obtain mean-field phase diagrams exhibiting a rich array of striped and topological phases, establishing paired lattice FQH states as an ideal platform to investigate the intertwining of topological and conventional broken symmetry order.
Motivated by recent experimental progress on iron-based ladder compounds, we study the doped two-orbital Hubbard model for the two-leg ladder BaFe$_2$S$_3$. The model is constructed by using {\it ab initio} hopping parameters and the ground state properties are investigated using the density matrix renormalization group method. We show that the $(π,0)$ magnetic ordering at half-filling, with ferromagnetic rungs and antiferromagnetic legs, becomes incommensurate upon hole doping. Moreover, depending on the strength of the Hubbard $U$ coupling, other magnetic patterns, such as $(0,π)$, are also …
The Majorana lattice gauge theory purely composed of Majorana fermions on square lattice is studied throughly. The ground state is obtained exactly and exhibits the coexistence of symmetry breaking and topological order. The $Z_2$ symmetry breaking of matter fields leads to the intertwined antiferromagnetic spin order and $η$-pairing order. The topological order is reflected in the $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid ground state of gauge fields. The Majorana lattice gauge theory, alternatively can be viewed as interacting Majorana fermion model, is possibly realized on a Majorana-zero-mode lattice.
We present a minimal bottom-up extension of the Chern-Simons bulk action for holographic translational symmetry breaking that naturally gives rise to pair density waves. We construct stationary inhomogeneous black hole solutions in which both the U(1) symmetry and spatially translational symmetry are spontaneously broken at finite temperature and charge density. This novel solution provides a dual description of a superconducting phase intertwined with charge, current and parity orders.
Unconventional strongly correlated phases of the repulsive Fermi-Hubbard model, which could be emulated by ultracold vapors loaded in optical lattices, are investigated by means of energy minimizations with quantum number projection before variation and without any assumed order parameter. In a tube-like geometry of optical plaquettes to realize the four-leg ladder Hubbard Hamiltonian, we highlight the intertwining of spin-, charge-, and pair-density waves embedded in a uniform d-wave superfluid background. As the lattice filling increases, this phase emerges from homogenous states exhibiting …

One of the most puzzling problems of high temperature cuprate superconductor is the pseudogap phase(PG) at temperatures above the superconducting transition temperature in the underdoped regime. The PG phase is found by the angle-resolved photoemission spectra(ARPES) to have a gap at some regions in momentum space and a fraction of Fermi surface remained, known as Fermi arcs. The arc turns into a d-wave SC gap with a node below the SC transition temperature. Here, by studying a strongly correlated model at low temperatures, we obtained a phase characterized by two kinds of pairing order parame…
We study the pairing symmetry of the interlayer paired state of composite fermions in quantum Hall bilayers. Based on the Halperin-Lee-Read (HLR) theory, the effect of the long-range Coulomb interaction and the internal Chern-Simons gauge fluctuation is analyzed with the random-phase approximation beyond the leading order contribution in small momentum expansion, and we observe that the interlayer paired states with a relative angular momentum $l=+1$ are energetically favored for filling $ν=\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{2}$ and $\frac{1}{4}+\frac{1}{4}$. The degeneracy between states with $\pm l$ is li…

Chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) describes efficient spin filtering by chiral molecules. This phenomenon has led to nanoscale manipulation of quantum spins with promising applications to spintronics and quantum computing, since its discovery nearly two decades ago. However, its underlying mechanism still remains mysterious for the required spin-orbit interaction (SOI) strength is unexpectedly large. Here we report a multi-orbital theory for CISS, where an effective SOI emerges from spontaneous formation of electron-hole pairing caused by many-body correlation. This mechanism produces a s…
We model the newly predicted high-$T_c$ superconducting candidates constructed by corner-shared trigonal bipyramidal complexes with an effective three-orbital tight-banding Hamiltonian and investigate the pairing symmetry of their superconducting states driven by electron-electron interactions. Our combined weak and strong coupling based calculations consistently identify the chiral $d+id$ superconductivity as the leading pairing symmetry in a wide doping range with realistic interaction parameters. This pairing state has nontrivial topological Chern-number and can host gapless chiral edge mod…

Motivated by the recent numerical simulations for doped $t$-$J$ model on the honeycomb lattice, we study superconductivity of singlet and triplet pairing on the honeycomb lattice Hubbard model. We show that a superconducting state with coexisting spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairings is induced by the antiferromagnetic order near half filling. The superconducting state we obtain has a topological phase transition that separates a topologically trivial state and a nontrivial state with Chern number two. Possible experimental realization of such a topological superconductivity is also discussed…
A major obstacle in understanding the mechanism of Cooper pairing in the cuprates is the existence of various intertwined orders associated with spin, charge, and Cooper pairs. Of particular importance is the ubiquitous charge order features that have been observed in a variety of cuprates, especially in the underdoped regime of the phase diagram. To explain the origin of the charge order and its implication to the superconducting phase, many theoretical models have been proposed, such as charge stripes, electronic nematicity, and Fermi surface instability. A highly appealing physical picture …

We study the two-dimensional $t$-$J$ model on a square lattice using infinite projected entangled pair states (iPEPS). At small doping, multiple orders, such as antiferromagnetic order, stripe order and superconducting order, are intertwined or compete with each other. We demonstrate the role of spin symmetry at small doping by either imposing SU(2) spin symmetry or its U(1) subgroup in the iPEPS ansatz, thereby excluding or allowing spontaneous spin-symmetry breaking respectively in the thermodynamic limit. From a detailed comparison of our simulations, we provide evidence that stripe order i…
We use the Chern-Simons (CS) fermion representation of s =1/2 spin operators to construct topological, long-range magnetically ordered states of interacting two-dimensional (2D) quantum spin models. We show that the fermion-fermion interactions mediated by the dynamic CS flux attachment may give rise to Cooper pairing of the fermions. Specifically, in an XY model on the honeycomb lattice, this construction leads to a "CS superconductor," which belongs to a topologically non-trivial in 2D symmetry class DIII, with particle-hole and time-reversal symmetries. It is shown that in the original spin…
We study the interplay of nematic and superconducting order in the two-dimensional Hubbard model and show that they can coexist, especially when superconductivity is not the energetically dominant phase. Due to a breaking of the $C_4$ symmetry, the coexisting phase inherently contains admixture of the $s$-wave pairing components. As a result, the superconducting gap exhibits very non-standard features including changed nodal directions. Our results also show that in the optimally doped regime the superconducting phase is typically unstable towards developing nematicity (breaking of the $C_4$ s…
Pairing symmetry plays a central role in the study of superconductivity. It is usually characterized by integer partial-waves, for example, $s$-, $p$-, $d$-waves. In this article, we investigate a new class of topological superconductivity whose gap functions possess a half-odd-integer monopole charge and, therefore, fractionalized half-odd-integer partial-wave symmetry in three dimensions. This exotic pairing occurs between Fermi surfaces of which Chern numbers are differed by an odd integer. The corresponding superconducting gap function is represented by monopole harmonics with half-odd-int…

Strongly interacting electrons in solid-state systems often display tendency towards multiple broken symmetries in the ground state. The complex interplay between different order parameters can give rise to a rich phase diagram. Here, we report on the identification of intertwined phases with broken rotational symmetry in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). Using transverse resistance measurements, we find a strongly anisotropic phase located in a 'wedge' above the underdoped region of the superconducting dome. Upon crossing the superconducting dome, a reduction of the critical tempera…
The recent discovery of novel charge density wave (CDW) and pair density wave (PDW) in kagomé lattice superconductors $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A=$ K, Rb, Cs) hints at unexpected time-reversal symmetry breaking correlated and topological states whose physical origin and broader implications are not understood. Here, we make conceptual advances toward a mechanism behind the striking observations and new predictions for novel macroscopic phase coherent quantum states. We show that the metallic CDW state with circulating loop currents is a doped orbital Chern insulator near van Hove filling. The emergent …
We generalize the $η$-pairing theory in Hubbard models to the ones with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and obtain the conditions under which the $η$-pairing operator is an eigenoperator of the Hamiltonian. The $η$ pairing thus reveals an exact $SU(2)$ pseudospin symmetry in our spin-orbit coupled Hubbard model, even though the $SU(2)$ spin symmetry is explicitly broken by the SOC. In particular, these exact results can be applied to a variety of Hubbard models with SOC on either bipartite or non-bipartite lattices, whose noninteracting limit can be a Dirac semimetal, a Weyl semimetal, a nodal-line …
A chiral $p_x+ip_y$ superconductor on a square lattice with nearest and next-nearest hopping and pairing terms is considered. Gap closures, as various parameters of the system are varied, are found analytically and used to identify the topological phases. The phases are characterized by Chern numbers (ranging from -3 to 3), and (numerically) by response to introduction of weak disorder, edges, and magnetic fields in an extreme type-II limit, focusing on the low-energy modes (which presumably become zero-energy Majorana modes for large lattices and separations). Several phases are found, includ…
We study competing orders of spinless fermions in the triangular-lattice Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor interaction. We calculate the effective, momentum-resolved two-particle vertex in an unbiased way in terms of the functional renormalization group method and compare two different schemes for the momentum discretization, one based on dividing the Fermi surface into patches and one based on a channel decomposition. We study attractive and repulsive nearest-neighbor interaction and find a competition of pairing and charge instabilities. In the attractive case, a Pomeranchuk instability oc…
Interacting Fermi gas provides an ideal model system to understand unconventional pairing and intertwined orders relevant to a large class of quantum materials. Rydberg-dressed Fermi gas is a recent experimental system where the sign, strength, and range of the interaction can be controlled. The interaction in momentum space has a negative minimum at $q_c$ inversely proportional to the characteristic length-scale in real space, the soft-core radius $r_c$. We show theoretically that single-component (spinless) Rydberg-dressed Fermi gas in two dimensions has a rich phase diagram with novel super…
We study the electronic instabilities of near 1/4 electron doped graphene using the functional renormalization group (FRG) and variational Monte-Carlo method. A modified FRG implementation is utilized to improve the treatment of the von Hove singularity. At 1/4 doping the system is a chiral spin density wave state exhibiting the anomalous quantized Hall effect, or equivalently a Chern insulator. When the doping deviates from 1/4, the $d_{x^2-y^2}+i d_{xy}$ Cooper pairing becomes the leading instability. Our results suggest near 1/4 electron or hole doped graphene is a fertile playground for th…
We study the sodium-iridates model on the honeycomb lattice with both BCS pairing potential and Hubbard interaction term. It is shown that this model can be exactly solved with appropriate choices of amplitude of pairing gaps, where the interacting terms are transformed to external field terms. The band structures of these exact solutions on both torus and cylinder geometry are discussed in great details. It is found that the ground state assumes an anti-ferromagnetic configuration, which breaks the time reversal symmetry spontaneously and renders the superconductor topologically trivial. On t…
