We study the range $R_n$ of a random walk on the $d$-dimensional lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ indexed by a random tree with $n$ vertices. Under the assumption that the random walk is centered and has finite fourth moments, we prove in dimension $d\leq3$ that $n^{-d/4}R_n$ converges in distribution to the Lebesgue measure of the support of the integrated super-Brownian excursion (ISE). An auxiliary result shows that the suitably rescaled local times of the tree-indexed random walk converge in distribution to the density process of ISE. We obtain similar results for the range of critical branching random walk in $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\leq3$. As an intermediate estimate, we get exact asymptotics for the probability that a critical branching random walk starting with a single particle at the origin hits a distant point. The results of the present article complement those derived in higher dimensions in our earlier work.
We establish limit theorems for U-statistics indexed by a random walk on Z^d and we express the limit in terms of some Levy sheet Z(s,t). Under some hypotheses, we prove that the limit process is Z(t,t) if the random walk is transient or null-recurrent ant that it is some stochastic integral with respect to Z when the walk is positive recurrent. We compare our results with results for random walks in random scenery.
We consider random walks indexed by arbitrary finite random or deterministic trees. We derive a simple sufficient criterion which ensures that the maximal displacement of the tree-indexed random walk is determined by a single large jump. This criterion is given in terms of four quantities : the tail and the expectation of the random walk steps, the height of the tree and the number of its vertices. The results are applied to critical Galton--Watson trees with offspring distributions in the domain of attraction of a stable law.
By introducing a new measure for the infinite Galton-Watson process and providing estimates for (discrete) Green's functions on trees, we establish the asymptotic behavior of the capacity of critical branching random walks: in high dimensions $d\ge 7$, the capacity grows linearly; and in the critical dimension $d=6$, it grows asymptotically proportional to $\frac{n}{\log n}$.
We introduce a model of branching interlacements for general critical offspring distributions. It consists of a countable collection of infinite tree-indexed random walk trajectories on $Z^d,d\geq5$. We show that this model turns out to be the local limit of the tree-indexed random walk in a discrete torus, conditioned on the size proportional to the volume of the torus. This generalizes the previous results of Angel, Ráth and the author, for the critical geometric offspring distribution. Our model also includes the model of random interlacements introduced by Sznitman as a degenerate case. To…
We provide asymptotics for the range R(n) of a random walk on the d-dimensional lattice indexed by a random tree with n vertices. Using Kingman's subadditive ergodic theorem, we prove under general assumptions that R(n)/n converges to a constant, and we give conditions ensuring that the limiting constant is strictly positive. On the other hand, in dimension 4 and in the case of a symmetric random walk with exponential moments, we prove that R(n) grows like n/(log n). We apply our results to asymptotics for the range of branching random walk when the initial size of the population tends to infi…
We study the behavior of Random Walk in Random Environment (RWRE) on trees in the critical case left open in previous work. Representing the random walk by an electrical network, we assume that the ratios of resistances of neighboring edges of a tree Gamma are i.i.d.random variables whose logarithms have mean zero and finite variance. Then the resulting RWRE is transient if simple random walk on Gamma is transient, but not vice versa. We obtain general transience criteria for such walks, which are sharp for symmetric trees of polynomial growth. In order to prove these criteria, we establish re…
Let (S_n)_{n\in\N} be a Z-valued random walk with increments from the domain of attraction of some α-stable law and let (ξ(i))_{i\in\Z} be a sequence of iid random variables. We want to investigate U-statistics indexed by the random walk S_n, that is U_n:=\sum_{1\leq i<j\leq n}h(ξ(S_i),ξ(S_j)) for some symmetric bivariate function h. We will prove the weak convergence without assumption of finite variance. Additionally, under the assumption of finite moments of order greater than two, we will establish a law of the iterated logarithm for the U-statistic U_n.
This article examines a recent body of work on stochastic processes indexed by a tree. Emphasis is on the application of this new framework to existing probability models. Proofs are largely omitted, with references provided.
We study the size properties of a general model of fractal sets that are based on a tree-indexed family of random compacts and a tree-indexed Markov chain. These fractals may be regarded as a generalization of those resulting from the Moran-like deterministic or random recursive constructions considered by various authors. Among other applications, we consider various extensions of Mandelbrot's fractal percolation process.
We derive several explicit distributions of functionals of Brownian motion indexed by the Brownian tree. In particular, we give a direct proof of a result of Bousquet-Mélou and Janson identifying the distribution of the density at 0 of the integrated super-Brownian excursion.
We construct the analogue of the local time -- at a fixed point $x$ -- for Markov processes indexed by Levy trees. We start by proving that Markov processes indexed by Levy trees satisfy a special Markov property which can be thought as a spatial version of the classical Markov property. Then, we construct the analogue of the local time by an approximation procedure and we characterize the support of its Lebesgue-Stieltjes measure. We also give an equivalent construction in terms of a special family of exit local times. Finally, combining these results, we show that the points at which the Mar…
We study the global and local regularity properties of random wavelet series whose coefficients exhibit correlations given by a tree-indexed Markov chain. We determine the law of the spectrum of singularities of these series, thereby performing their multifractal analysis. We also show that almost every sample path displays an oscillating singularity at almost every point and that the points at which a sample path has at most a given Holder exponent form a set with large intersection.
We consider the model of Brownian motion indexed by the Brownian tree. For every $r\geq 0$ and every connected component of the set of points where Brownian motion is greater than $r$, we define the boundary size of this component, and we then show that the collection of these boundary sizes evolves when $r$ varies like a well-identified growth-fragmentation process. We then prove that the same growth-fragmentation process appears when slicing a Brownian disk at height $r$ and considering the perimeters of the resulting connected components.
We develop an excursion theory for Brownian motion indexed by the Brownian tree, which in many respects is analogous to the classical Itô theory for linear Brownian motion. Each excursion is associated with a connected component of the complement of the zero set of the tree-indexed Brownian motion. Each such connectedcomponent is itself a continuous tree, and we introduce a quantity measuring the length of its boundary. The collection of boundary lengths coincides with the collection of jumps of a continuous-state branching process with branching mechanism $ψ(u)=\sqrt{8/3}\,u^{3/2}$. Furthermo…
A class of branching processes in varying environments is exhibited which become extinct almost surely even though the means M_n grow fast enough so that sum M_n^{-1} is finite. In fact, such a process is constructed for every offspring distribution of infinite variance, and this establishes the converse of a previously known fact: that if a distribution has finite variance then sum M_n^{-1}=infty is equivalent to almost sure extinction. This has as an immediate consequence the converse to a theorem on equipolarity of Galton-Watson trees.
We consider a sequence of Markov chains $(\mathcal X^n)_{n=1,2,...}$ with $\mathcal X^n = (X^n_σ)_{σ\in\mathcal T}$, indexed by the full binary tree $\mathcal T = \mathcal T_0 \cup \mathcal T_1 \cup ...$, where $\mathcal T_k$ is the $k$th generation of $\mathcal T$. In addition, let $(Σ_k)_{k=0,1,2,...}$ be a random walk on $\mathcal T$ with $Σ_k \in \mathcal T_k$ and $\widetilde{\mathcal R}^n = (\widetilde R_t^n)_{t\geq 0}$ with $\widetilde R_t^n := X_{Σ_{[tn]}}$, arising by observing the Markov chain $\mathcal X^n$ along the random walk. We present a law of large numbers concerning the empir…
We study biased random walk on subcritical and supercritical Galton-Watson trees conditioned to survive in the transient, sub-ballistic regime. By considering offspring laws with infinite variance, we extend previously known results for the walk on the supercritical tree and observe new trapping phenomena for the walk on the subcritical tree which, in this case, always yield sub-ballisticity. This is contrary to the walk on the supercritical tree which always has some ballistic phase.
We study the evolution of a particle system whose genealogy is given by a supercritical continuous time Galton--Watson tree. The particles move independently according to a Markov process and when a branching event occurs, the offspring locations depend on the position of the mother and the number of offspring. We prove a law of large numbers for the empirical measure of individuals alive at time t. This relies on a probabilistic interpretation of its intensity by mean of an auxiliary process. The latter has the same generator as the Markov process along the branches plus additional jumps, ass…
The Tree Builder Random Walk is a special random walk that evolves on trees whose size increases with time, randomly and depending upon the walker. After every s steps of the walker, a random number of vertices are added to the tree and attached to the current position of the walker. These processes share similarities with other important classes of markovian and non-markovian random walks presenting a large variety of behaviors according to parameters specifications. We show that for a large and most significant class of tree builder random walks, the process is either null recurrent or trans…
Consider the graph induced by $\mathbb{Z}^d$, equipped with uniformly elliptic random conductances. At time $0$, place a Poisson point process of particles on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and let them perform independent simple random walks. Tessellate the graph into cubes indexed by $i\in\mathbb{Z}^d$ and tessellate time into intervals indexed by $τ$. Given a local event $E(i,τ)$ that depends only on the particles inside the space time region given by the cube $i$ and the time interval $τ$, we prove the existence of a Lipschitz connected surface of cells $(i,τ)$ that separates the origin from infinity on w…
We introduce block Markov chains (BMCs) indexed by an infinite rooted tree. It turns out that BMCs define a new class of tree-indexed Markovian processes. We clarify the structure of BMCs in connection with Markov chains (MCs) and Markov random fields (MRFs). Mainly, show that probability measures which are BMCs for every root are indeed Markov chains (MCs) and yet they form a strict subclass of Markov random fields (MRFs) on the considered tree. Conversely, a class of MCs which are BMCs is characterized. Furthermore, we establish that in the one-dimensional case the class of BMCs coincides wi…
We consider the simple random walk on the infinite cluster of the Bernoulli bond percolation of trees, and investigate the relation between the speed of the simple random walk and the retaining probability p by studying three classes of trees. A sufficient condition is established for Galton-Watson trees.
We show that the trace of the null recurrent biased random walk on a Galton-Watson tree properly renormalized converges to the Brownian forest. Our result extends to the setting of the random walk in random environment on a Galton-Watson tree.
We consider a recurrent random walk in random environment on a regular tree. Under suitable general assumptions upon the distribution of the environment, we show that the walk exhibits an unusual slow movement: the order of magnitude of the walk in the first $n$ steps is $(\log n)^3$.
We give a series of combinatorial results that can be obtained from any two collections (both indexed by $\Z\times \N$) of left and right pointing arrows that satisfy some natural relationship. When applied to certain self-interacting random walk couplings, these allow us to reprove some known transience and recurrence results for some simple models. We also obtain new results for one-dimensional multi-excited random walks and for random walks in random environments in all dimensions.
We consider a recurrent random walk on a rooted tree in random environment given by a branching random walk. Up to the first return to the root, its edge local times form a Multi-type Galton-Watson tree with countably infinitely many types. When the walk is the diffusive or sub-diffusive, by studying the maximal type of this Galton-Watson tree, we establish the asymptotic behaviour of the largest local times of this walk during n excursions, under the annealed law.
In this paper we consider random walks on Galton-Watson trees with random conductances. On these trees, the distance of the walker to the root satisfies a law of large numbers with limit the effective velocity, or speed of the walk. We study the regularity of the speed as a function of the distribution of conductances, in particular when the distribution of conductances converges to a non-elliptic limit.
The phase transition of $M$-digging random on a general tree was studied by Collevecchio, Huynh and Kious (2018). In this paper, we study particularly the critical $M$-digging random walk on a superperiodic tree that is proved to be recurrent. We keep using the techniques introduced by Collevecchio, Kious and Sidoravicius (2017) with the aim of investigating the phase transition of Once-excited random walk on general trees. In addition, we prove if $\mathcal T$ is a tree whose branching number is larger than $1$, any multi-excited random walk on $\mathcal{T}$ moving, after excitation, like a s…
We consider a random walk on a Galton-Watson tree in random environment, in the subdiffusive case. We prove the convergence of the renormalised height function of the walk towards the continuous-time height process of a spectrally positive strictly stable Lévy process, jointly with the convergence of the renormalised range of the walk towards the real tree coded by the latter continuous-time height process.
In this short paper, we consider the Once-reinforced random walk with reinforcement parameter $a$ on trees with bounded degree which are transient for the simple random walk. On each of these trees, we prove that there exists an explicit critical parameter $a_0$ such that the Once-reinforced random walk is almost surely recurrent if $a>a_0$ and almost surely transient if $a<a_0$. This provides the first examples of phase transition for the Once-reinforced random walk.
In this paper, we study the time required for a λ-biased (λ>1) walk to visit all the vertices of a supercritical Galton-Watson tree up to generation n. Inspired by the extremal landscape approach in [Cortines, Louidor, Saglietti 2018] for the simple random walk on binary trees, we establish the scaling limit of the cover time in the biased setting.
We prove the existence of scaling limits for the projection on the backbone of the random walks on the Incipient Infinite Cluster and the Invasion Percolation Cluster on a regular tree. We treat these projected random walks as randomly trapped random walks (as defined in [BCČR15]) and thus describe these scaling limits as spatially subordinated Brownian motions
We study simple random walk on the uniform spanning tree on Z^2 . We obtain estimates for the transition probabilities of the random walk, the distance of the walk from its starting point after n steps, and exit times of both Euclidean balls and balls in the intrinsic graph metric. In particular, we prove that the spectral dimension of the uniform spanning tree on Z^2 is 16/13 almost surely.
Given a finite typed rooted tree $T$ with $n$ vertices, the {\em empirical subtree measure} is the uniform measure on the $n$ typed subtrees of $T$ formed by taking all descendants of a single vertex. We prove a large deviation principle in $n$, with explicit rate function, for the empirical subtree measures of multitype Galton-Watson trees conditioned to have exactly $n$ vertices. In the process, we extend the notions of shift-invariance and specific relative entropy--as typically understood for Markov fields on deterministic graphs such as $\mathbb Z^d$--to Markov fields on random trees. We …
We consider the biased random walk on a tree constructed from the set of finite self-avoiding walks on a lattice, and use it to construct probability measures on infinite self-avoiding walks. The limit measure (if it exists) obtained when the bias converges to its critical value is conjectured to coincide with the weak limit of the uniform SAW. Along the way, we obtain a criterion for the continuity of the escape probability of a biased random walk on a tree as a function of the bias, and show that the collection of escape probability functions for spherically symmetric trees of bounded degree…
We consider an i.i.d. random environment with a strong form of transience on the two dimensional integer lattice. Namely, the walk always moves forward in the y-direction. We prove a functional CLT for the quenched expected position of the random walk indexed by its level crossing times. We begin with a variation of the Martingale Central Limit Theorem. The main part of the paper checks the conditions of the theorem for our problem.
In this article it is shown that the Brownian motion on the continuum random tree is the scaling limit of the simple random walks on any family of discrete $n$-vertex ordered graph trees whose search-depth functions converge to the Brownian excursion as $n\to\infty$. We prove both a quenched version (for typical realisations of the trees) and an annealed version (averaged over all realisations of the trees) of our main result. The assumptions of the article cover the important example of simple random walks on the trees generated by the Galton-Watson branching process, conditioned on the total…
In this paper, we consider the linearly reinforced and the once-reinforced random walk models in the transient phase on trees. We show the large deviations for the upper tails for both models. We also show the exponential decay for the lower tail in the once-reinforced random walk model. On the other hand, the lower tail is in polynomial decay for the linearly reinforced random walk model.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of once-reinforced biased random walk (ORbRW) on Galton-Watson trees. Here the underlying (unreinforced) random walk has a bias towards or away from the root. We prove that in the setting of multiplicative once-reinforcement the ORbRW can be recurrent even when the underlying biased random walk is ballistic. We also prove that, on Galton-Watson trees without leaves, the speed is positive in the transient regime. Finally, we prove that, on regular trees, the speed of the ORbRW is monotone decreasing in the reinforcement parameter when the underlying random walk…
We consider a $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued branching random walk with a stationary and ergodic environment $ξ=(ξ_n)$ indexed by time $n\in\mathbb{N}$. Let $Z_n$ be the counting measure of particles of generation $n$. With the help of the uniform convergence of martingale and the multifractal analysis, we establish a large deviation result for the measures $Z_n$ as well as a moderate deviation principle.
The motivation for this paper is the study of the phase transition for recurrence/transience of a class of self-interacting random walks on trees, which includes the once-reinforced random walk. For this purpose, we define a quantity, that we call the branching-ruin number of a tree, which provides (in the spirit of Furstenberg, 1970, and Lyons, 1990) a natural way to measure trees with polynomial growth. We prove that the branching-ruin number of a tree is equal to the critical parameter for the recurrence/transience of the once-reinforced random walk. We define a sharp and effective (i.e. co…
We prove that the speed of a $λ$-biased random walk on a supercritical Galton-Watson tree is differentiable for $λ$ such that the walk is ballistic and obeys a central limit theorem, and give an expression of the derivative using a certain $2$-dimensional Gaussian random variable. The proof heavily uses the renewal structure of Galton-Watson trees that was introduced by Lyons-Pemantle-Peres.
This paper studies the behavior of RWRE on trees in the critical case left open in previous work. For trees of exponential growth, a random perturbation of the transition probabilities can change a transient random walk into a recurrent one. This is the opposite of what occurs on trees of sub-exponential growth.
We give an expression of the speed of the biased random walk on a Galton--Watson tree. In the particular case of the simple random walk, we recover the result of Lyons, Pemantle and Peres \cite{LyPePe95}. The proof uses a description of the invariant distribution of the environment seen from the particle.
We consider branching random walks and contact processes on infinite, connected, locally finite graphs whose reproduction and infectivity rates across edges are inversely proportional to vertex degree. We show that when the ambient graph is a Galton-Watson tree then, in certain circumstances, the branching random walks and contact processes will have weak survival phases. We also provide bounds on critical values.
We study the accessibility percolation model on infinite trees. The model is defined by associating an absolute continuous random variable $X_v$ to each vertex $v$ of the tree. The main question to be considered is the existence or not of an infinite path of nearest neighbors $v_1,v_2,v_3\ldots$ such that $X_{v_1}<X_{v_2}<X_{v_3}<\cdots$ and which spans the entire graph. The event defined by the existence of such path is called {\it{percolation}}. We consider the case of the accessibility percolation model on a spherically symmetric tree with growth function given by $f(i)=\lceil (i+1)^ α\rcei…
We consider the slow movement of randomly biased random walk $(X_n)$ on a supercritical Galton--Watson tree, and are interested in the sites on the tree that are most visited by the biased random walk. Our main result implies tightness of the distributions of the most visited sites under the annealed measure. This is in contrast with the one-dimensional case, and provides, to the best of our knowledge, the first non-trivial example of null recurrent random walk whose most visited sites are not transient, a question originally raised by Erdős and Révész [11] for simple symmetric random walk on …
