Topological ordered states are exotic quantum states of matter that defy the usual description in terms of symmetry breaking and local order parameters. The type or order they feature is of non-local, topological nature, and it allows such systems to present unusual and interesting behaviours, like robust degeneracy, and anyonic excitations. Here we focus on the behaviour of such systems away from equilibrium. After a sudden change of the Hamiltonian - the so called quantum quench - quantum many body systems show thermalization, unless the quench is integrable. We show how in topologically ordered systems out of equilibrium behaviour do not follow the usual thermalization behaviour.
We investigate the quantum transport of anyons in one space dimension. After establishing some universal features of non-equilibrium systems in contact with two heat reservoirs in a generalised Gibbs state, we focus on the abelian anyon solution of the Tomonaga-Luttinger model possessing axial-vector duality. In this context a non-equilibrium representation of the physical observables is constructed, which is the basic tool for a systematic study of the anyon particle and heat transport. We determine the associated Lorentz number and describe explicitly the deviation from the standard Wiedeman…
The manifold of ground states of a family of quantum Hamiltonians can be endowed with a quantum geometric tensor whose singularities signal quantum phase transitions and give a general way to define quantum phases. In this paper, we show that the same information-theoretic and geometrical approach can be used to describe the geometry of quantum states away from equilibrium. We construct the quantum geometric tensor $Q_{μν}$ for ensembles of states that evolve in time and study its phase diagram and equilibration properties. If the initial ensemble is the manifold of ground states, we show that…
In this paper, we investigate the strong coupling quantum thermodynamics of the hybrid quantum system far away from equilibrium. The strong coupling hybrid system consists of a cavity and a spin ensemble of the NV centers in diamond under external driving that has been realized experimentally. We apply the renormalization theory of quantum thermodynamics we developed recently to study the transient quantum heat and work in this hybrid system. We find that the dissipation and fluctuation dynamics of the system induce the transient quantum heat current which involve the significant non-Markovian…
Exploiting the possibility of temporal variation of the winding number, we have prepared a SSH chain in its {\it stroboscopic} topological state, starting from the trivial one, by application of a periodic perturbation. The periodic driving, we employ here, is adiabatically switched on to break the particle-hole symmetry and generate a chiral mass term in the effective Floquet Hamiltonian; consequently the Floquet Hamiltonian also gets deformed without crossing the gapless quantum critical point. The particle hole symmetry is subsequently restored in the Floquet Hamiltonian by adiabatically sw…

The topological features of quantum many-body wave functions are known to have profound consequences for the physics of ground-states and their low-energy excitations. We describe how topology influences the dynamics of many-body systems when driven far from equilibrium. Our results are succinctly captured by a nonequilibrium topological classification that can be used to predict universal aspects of generic isolated quantum systems as they evolve unitarily in time. By analogy to the classifications used to describe systems in equilibrium, we consider two short-ranged entangled wave functions …
Topological phases of the famous Altland-Zirnbauer (AZ) tenfold classes are defined on the equilibrium ground states. Whether such equilibrium topological phases have universal correspondence to far-from-equilibrium quantum dynamics is a fundamental issue of both theoretical and experimental importance. Here we uncover the universal topological quench dynamics linking to the equilibrium topological phases for the complete AZ tenfold classes, with a general framework being established. We show a fundamental result that a $d$-dimensional topological phase of the tenfold class, with an integer in…
Spatially uniform optical excitations can induce Floquet topological band structures within insulators which can develop similar or equal characteristics as are known from three-dimensional topological insulators. We derive in this article theoretically the development of Floquet topological quantum states for electromagnetically driven semiconductor bulk matter and we present results for the lifetime of these states and their occupation in the non-equilibrium. The direct physical impact of the mathematical precision of the Floquet-Keldysh theory is evident when we solve the driven system of a…
Higher-order topological~(HOT) states,~hosting topologically protected modes on lower-dimensional boundaries,~such as hinges and corners, have recently extended the realm of the static topological phases.~Here we demonstrate the possibility of realizing a two-dimensional \emph{Floquet} second-order topological insulator, featuring corner-localized zero quasienergy modes and characterized by quantized Floquet qudrupolar moment $Q^{\rm Flq}_{xy}=0.5$, by periodically kicking a quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) with a discrete fourfold ($C_4$) and time-reversal (${\mathcal T}$) symmetry breaking…
We review methods for using time-periodic fields (e.g., laser or microwave fields) to induce non-equilibrium topological phenomena in quantum many-body systems. We discuss how such fields can be used to change the topological properties of the single particle spectrum, and key experimental demonstrations in solid state, cold atomic, and photonic systems. The single particle Floquet band structure provides a stage on which the system's dynamics play out; the crucial question is then how to obtain robust topological behaviour in the many-particle setting. In the regime of mesoscopic transport, w…
Quasi-particles described by Green's functions of equilibrium systems exhibit non-Hermitian topological phenomena because of their finite lifetime. This non-Hermitian perspective on equilibrium systems provides new insights into correlated systems and attracts much interest because of its potential to solve open questions in correlated compounds. In this paper, we provide a concise review of the non-Hermitian topological band structures for quantum many-body systems in equilibrium as well as their classification.
We introduce a topological quantum number -- coined dynamical topological order parameter (DTOP) -- that is dynamically defined in the real-time evolution of a quantum many-body system and represented by a momentum space winding number of the Pancharatnam geometric phase. Our construction goes conceptually beyond the standard notion of topological invariants characterizing the wave-function of a system, which are constants of motion under coherent time evolution. In particular, we show that the DTOP can change its integer value at discrete times where so called dynamical quantum phase transiti…
We derive the universal real time $U(1)$ topological gauge field action for mixed quantum states of weakly correlated fermions in all dimensions, and demonstrate its independence of the underlying equilibrium or non-equilibrium nature of dynamics stabilizing the state. The key prerequisites are charge quantization and charge conservation. The gauge action encodes non-quantized linear responses as expected for mixed states, but also quantized non-linear responses, associated to mixed state topology and accessible in experiment. Our construction furthermore demonstrates how the physical pictures…
In the field of non-equilibrium phase transitions, the Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM) is undoubtedly an important discovery, pointing out that some universal scaling rules are applied to a wide range of physical systems from quantum to the cosmos in complex non-equilibrium continuous phase transitions. However, except for some scaling relations in specific cases, the algebraic-based KZM can not provide further details on the topological defect generation laws. In this work, we propose an analytical-based KZM that can accurately predict topological defect generation for a given quenching conditio…
We study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of $p$-wave superconducting quantum wires with long-range interactions, when the chemical potential is linearly ramped across the topological phase transition. We show that the heat produced after the quench scales with the quench rate $δ$ according to the scaling law $δ^θ$, where the exponent $θ$ depends on the power law exponent of the long-range interactions. We identify the parameter regimes where this scaling can be cast in terms of the universal equilibrium critical exponents and can thus be understood within the Kibble-Zurek framework. When the e…
The recently predicted topological magnetoelectric effect and the response to an electric charge that mimics an induced mirror magnetic monopole are fundamental attributes of topological states of matter with broken time reversal symmetry. Using a SQUID-on-tip, acting simultaneously as a tunable scanning electric charge and as ultrasensitive nanoscale magnetometer, we induce and directly image the microscopic currents generating the magnetic monopole response in a graphene quantum Hall electron system. We find a rich and complex nonlinear behavior governed by coexistence of topological and non…
Dynamical phase transitions (DPTs), characterized by non-analytic behaviors in time domain, extend the equilibrium phase transitions to far-from-equilibrium situations. It has been predicted that DPTs can be precisely identified by the discontinuities of the Pancharatnam geometric phase (PGP) during the time evolution. However, PGP always mixes with dynamical phase and the experimental observation of DPTs by PGP is still absent. Here, we theoretically present a novel scheme for eliminating the dynamical phase by taking advantage of chiral symmetry in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, and e…
Topological phases are enriched in non-equilibrium open systems effectively described by non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. While several properties unique to non-Hermitian topological systems were uncovered, the fundamental role of symmetry in non-Hermitian physics has yet to be fully understood, and it has remained unclear how symmetry protects non-Hermitian topological phases. Here we show that two fundamental anti-unitary symmetries, time-reversal and particle-hole symmetries, are topologically equivalent in the complex energy plane and hence unified in non-Hermitian physics. A striking consequen…
