Dynamical phase transitions (DPTs), characterized by non-analytic behaviors in time domain, extend the equilibrium phase transitions to far-from-equilibrium situations. It has been predicted that DPTs can be precisely identified by the discontinuities of the Pancharatnam geometric phase (PGP) during the time evolution. However, PGP always mixes with dynamical phase and the experimental observation of DPTs by PGP is still absent. Here, we theoretically present a novel scheme for eliminating the dynamical phase by taking advantage of chiral symmetry in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, and experimentally observe DPTs by directly measuring PGP in a quenched topological nanomechanical lattice. Time-dependent topological structures of the SSH model are configured by eight strong-coupled high-quality-factor nanomechanical oscillators. By measuring the vibration phase and the normalized amplitude of the edge oscillator, we show a direct classical analog of DPTs. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate the robustness of DPTs against weak structure disorders, and numerically explore the relation between DPTs and the equilibrium phase boundary. This work not only establishes the quantitative method to identify DPTs, but also opens the door for studying non-equilibrium topological dynamics with a well-controlled nanomechanical system.
The efficient cooling of the nanomechanical resonators is essential to exploration of quantum properties of the macroscopic or mesoscopic systems. We propose such a laser-cooling scheme for a nanomechanical cantilever, which works even for the low-frequency mechanical mode and under weak cooling lasers. The cantilever is attached by a diamond nitrogen-vacancy center under a strong magnetic field gradient and the cooling is assisted by a dynamical Stark-shift gate. Our scheme can effectively enhance the desired cooling efficiency by avoiding the off-resonant and unexpected carrier transitions, …
We investigate theoretically the dynamics of two quasidegenerate mechanical modes coupled through an open quantum two-level system. A mean-field approach shows that by engineering the retarded response of the two-level system with a coherent drive, the non-Hermitian mechanical spectrum exhibits an exceptional degeneracy point where the two modes coalesce. We show that this degeneracy can be exploited to manipulate the vectorial polarization of the mechanical oscillations. We find that adiabatically varying the detuning and the intensity of the drive induces a rotation of the mechanical polariz…
We study synchronization of a room temperature optomechanical system formed by two resonators coupled via radiation pressure to the same driven optical cavity mode. By using stochastic Langevin equations and effective slowly-varying amplitude equations, we explore the long-time dynamics of the system. We see that thermal noise can induce significant non-Gaussian dynamical properties, including the coexistence of multi-stable synchronized limit cycles and phase diffusion. Synchronization in this optomechanical system is very robust with respect to thermal noise: in fact, even though each oscill…
Gauge fields play important roles in condensed matter, explaining for example nonreciprocal and topological transport phenomena. Establishing gauge potentials for phonon transport in nanomechanical systems would bring quantum Hall physics to a new domain, which offers broad applications in sensing and signal processing, and is naturally associated with strong nonlinearities and thermodynamics. In this work, we demonstrate a magnetic gauge field for nanomechanical vibrations in a scalable, on-chip optomechanical system. We exploit multimode optomechanical interactions, which provide a useful re…
The dynamical and topological properties of non-Hermitian systems have attracted great attention in recent years. In this work, we establish an intrinsic connection between two classes of intriguing phenomena -- topological phases and dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) -- in non-Hermitian systems. Focusing on one-dimensional models with chiral symmetry, we find DQPTs following the quench from a trivial to a non-Hermitian topological phase. Moreover, the number of critical momenta and critical time periods of the DQPTs are found to be directly related to the topological invariants of t…
Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) are topologically characterized in quantum quench dynamics in topological systems. In this paper, we study Loschmidt amplitudes and DQPTs in quantum quenches in mirror-symmetric topological phases. Based on the topological classification of mirror-symmetric insulators, we show that mirror symmetry creates symmetry-protected DQPTs. If mirror symmetry is present, topologically robust DQPTs can occur in quantum quenches, even in high-dimensional time-reversal invariant systems. Then, we also show that symmetry-protected DQPTs occur in quenches in two-di…
We experimentally demonstrate a dynamical classification approach for investigation of topological quantum phases using a solid-state spin system through nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond. Similar to the bulkboundary correspondence in real space at equilibrium, we observe a dynamical bulk-surface correspondence in the momentum space from a dynamical quench process. An emergent dynamical topological invariant is precisely measured in experiment by imaging the dynamical spin-textures on the recently defined band-inversion surfaces, with high topological numbers being implemented. Important…
Programmable quantum processors are suitable platforms for simulating quantum systems, of which topological phases are of particular interest. We simulate the quench dynamics of a one-dimensional system on IBM Q devices. The topological properties of the dynamics are described by the dynamical topological invariants, the dynamical winding number and the time-dependent Berry phase, which are simulated with the quantum circuit model. The results show that despite the noise present in the current quantum computers, the dynamical topological invariants are robust. Moreover, to investigate the infl…
We propose a versatile framework to dynamically generate Floquet higher-order topological insulators by multi-step driving of topologically trivial Hamiltonians. Two analytically solvable examples are used to illustrate this procedure to yield Floquet quadrupole and octupole insulators with zero- and/or $π$-corner modes protected by mirror symmetries. Furthermore, we introduce dynamical topological invariants from the full unitary return map and show its phase bands contain Weyl singularities whose topological charges form dynamical multipole moments in the Brillouin zone. Combining them with …
We introduce a topological quantum number -- coined dynamical topological order parameter (DTOP) -- that is dynamically defined in the real-time evolution of a quantum many-body system and represented by a momentum space winding number of the Pancharatnam geometric phase. Our construction goes conceptually beyond the standard notion of topological invariants characterizing the wave-function of a system, which are constants of motion under coherent time evolution. In particular, we show that the DTOP can change its integer value at discrete times where so called dynamical quantum phase transiti…
Non-Hermitian topological phases in static and periodically driven systems have attracted great attention in recent years. Finding dynamical probes for these exotic phases would be of great importance in the detection and application of their topological properties. In this work, we propose a systematic approach to dynamically characterize non-Hermitian Floquet topological phases in one-dimension with chiral symmetry. We show that the topological invariants of a chiral symmetric Floquet system can be fully determined by measuring the winding angles of its time-averaged spin textures. We furthe…
How to characterize topological quantum phases is a fundamental issue in the broad field of topological matter. From a dimension reduction approach, we propose the concept of high-order band inversion surfaces (BISs) which enable the optimal schemes to characterize equilibrium topological phases by far-from-equilibrium quantum dynamics, and further report the experimental simulation. We show that characterization of a d-dimensional (dD) topological phase can be reduced to lower-dimensional topological invariants in the high-order BISs, of which the nth-order BIS is a (d-n)D interface in moment…
Topological phase of matter is now a mainstream of research in condensed matter physics, of which the classification, synthesis, and detection of topological states have brought excitements over the recent decade while remain incomplete with ongoing challenges in both theory and experiment. Here we propose to establish a universal dynamical characterization of the topological quantum phases classified by integers, and further propose the high-precision dynamical schemes to detect such states. The framework of {the dynamical classification theory} consists of basic theorems. First, we uncover t…
We introduce and study dynamical probes of band structure topology in the post-quench time-evolution from mixed initial states of quantum many-body systems. Our construction generalizes the notion of dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs), a real-time counterpart of conventional equilibrium phase transitions in quantum dynamics, to finite temperatures and generalized Gibbs ensembles. The non-analytical signatures hallmarking these mixed state DQPTs are found to be characterized by observable phase singularities manifesting in the dynamical formation of vortex-antivortex pairs in the inter…
We investigate a generic dynamical theory to characterize topological quantum phases by quantum quenches, and study the emergent topology of quantum dynamics when the quenches start from a deep or shallow trivial phase to topological regimes. Two dynamical schemes are examined: One is to characterize topological phases via quantum dynamics induced by a single quench along an arbitrary axis, and the other applies a sequence of quenches with respect to all (pseudo)spin axes. These two schemes are both built on the so-called dynamical bulk-surface correspondence, which shows that the $d$-dimensio…
We study the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Bose-Hubbard model at incommensurate densities, which describes a one-dimensional system of interacting bosons whose tunneling is dressed by a dynamical $\mathbb{Z}_2$ field. At commensurate densities, the model is known to host intertwined topological phases, where long-range order coexists with non-trivial topological properties. This interplay between spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) and topological symmetry protection gives rise to interesting fractional topological phenomena when the system is doped to certain incommensurate fillings. In particular, we hereb…
We study the Loschmidt echo for quenches in open one-dimensional lattice models with symmetry protected topological phases. For quenches where dynamical quantum phase transitions do occur we find that cusps in the bulk return rate at critical times tc are associated with sudden changes in the boundary contribution. For our main example, the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, we show that these sudden changes are related to the periodical appearance of two eigenvalues close to zero in the dynamical Loschmidt matrix. We demonstrate, furthermore, that the structure of the Loschmidt spectrum is linked to…
The features of topological physics can manifest in a variety of physical systems in distinct ways. Periodically driven systems, with the advantage of high flexibility and controllability, provide a versatile platform to simulate many topological phenomena and may lead to novel phenomena that can not be observed in the absence of driving. Here we investigate the influence of realistic experimental noise on the realization of a two-level system under a two-frequency drive that induces topologically nontrivial band structure in the two-dimensional Floquet space. We propose a dynamical decoupling…
We study the dynamical process of equilibration of topological properties in quantum many-body systems undergoing a parameter quench between two topologically inequivalent Hamiltonians. This scenario is motivated by recent experiments on ultracold atomic gases, where a trivial initial state is prepared before the Hamiltonian is ramped into a topological insulator phase. While the many-body wave function must stay topologically trivial in the coherent post-quench dynamics, here we show how the topological properties of the single particle density matrix dynamically change and equilibrate in the…
Topological insulator lasers are a newly introduced kind of lasers in which light snakes around a cavity without scattering. Like for an electron current in a topological insulator material, a topologically protected lasing mode travels along the cavity edge, steering neatly around corners and imperfections without scattering or leaking out. In a recent experiment, topological insulator lasers have been demonstrated using a square lattice of coupled semiconductor microring resonators with a synthetic magnetic field. However, laser arrays with slow population dynamics are likely to show dynamic…
As a prototype model of topological quantum memory, two-dimensional toric code is genuinely immune to generic local static perturbations, but fragile at finite temperature and also after non-equilibrium time evolution at zero temperature. We show that dynamical localization induced by disorder makes the time evolution a local unitary transformation at all times, which keeps topological order robust after a quantum quench. We verify this conclusion by investigating the Wilson loop expectation value and topological entanglement entropy. Our results suggest that the two dimensional topological qu…
In quenching a topological phase across phase transition, the dynamical bulk-surface correspondence emerges that the bulk topology of $d$-dimensional ($d$D) phase relates to the nontrivial pattern of quench dynamics emerging on $(d-1)$D subspace, called band inversion surfaces (BISs) in momentum space. Here we report the first experimental observation of the dynamical bulk-surface correspondence through measuring the topological charges in a 2D quantum anomalous Hall model realized in an optical Raman lattice. The system can be quenched with respect to every spin axis by suddenly varying the t…
A local Hamiltonian with Topological Quantum Order (TQO) has a robust ground state degeneracy that makes it an excellent quantum memory candidate. This memory can be corrupted however if part of the state leaves the protected ground state manifold and returns later with a dynamically accrued phase error. Here we analyse how TQO suppresses this process and use this to quantify the degree to which spectral densities in different topological sectors are correlated. We provide numerical verification of our results by modelling an interacting p-wave superconducting wire.

The nonequilibrium dynamics of two dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, in the presence of staggered chemical potential, is investigated using the notion of dynamical quantum phase transition. We contribute to expanding the systematic understanding of the interrelation between the equilibrium quantum phase transition and the dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT). Specifically, we find that dynamical quantum phase transition relies on the existence of massless {\it propagating quasiparticles} as signaled by their impact on the Loschmidt overlap. These massless excitations are a subset of…
We present a minimal non-Hermitian model where a topologically nontrivial complex energy spectrum is induced by inter-particle interactions. Our model consists of a one-dimensional chain with a dynamical non-Hermitian gauge field with density dependence. The model is topologically trivial for a single particle system, but exhibits nontrivial non-Hermitian topology with a point gap when two or more particles are present in the system. We construct an effective doublon model to describe the nontrivial topology in the presence of two particles, which quantitatively agrees with the full interactin…
Weyl semimetals are three-dimensional, topologically protected, gapless phases which show exotic phenomena such as Fermi arc surface states or negative magnetoresistance. It is an open question whether interparticle interactions can turn the topological semimetal into a topologically nontrivial Mott insulating phase. We investigate an experimentally motivated model for Weyl physics of cold atoms in optical lattices, with the main focus on interaction effects and topological properties by means of dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). We characterize topological phases by numerically evaluating t…
Aiming at a better understanding of anomalous and topological effects in gauge theories out-of-equilibrium, we study the real-time dynamics of a prototype model for CP-violation, the massive Schwinger model with a $θ$-term. We identify dynamical quantum phase transitions between different topological sectors that appear after sufficiently strong quenches of the $θ$-parameter. Moreover, we establish a general dynamical topological order parameter, which can be accessed through fermion two-point correlators and, importantly, which can be applied for interacting theories. Enabled by this result, …
