The recently predicted topological magnetoelectric effect and the response to an electric charge that mimics an induced mirror magnetic monopole are fundamental attributes of topological states of matter with broken time reversal symmetry. Using a SQUID-on-tip, acting simultaneously as a tunable scanning electric charge and as ultrasensitive nanoscale magnetometer, we induce and directly image the microscopic currents generating the magnetic monopole response in a graphene quantum Hall electron system. We find a rich and complex nonlinear behavior governed by coexistence of topological and nontopological equilibrium currents that is not captured by the monopole models. Furthermore, by utilizing a tuning fork that induces nanoscale vibrations of the SQUID-on-tip, we directly image the equilibrium currents of individual quantum Hall edge states for the first time. We reveal that the edge states that are commonly assumed to carry only a chiral downstream current, in fact carry a pair of counterpropagating currents, in which the topological downstream current in the incompressible region is always counterbalanced by heretofore unobserved nontopological upstream current flowing in the adjacent compressible region. The intricate patterns of the counterpropagating equilibrium-state orbital currents provide new insights into the microscopic origins of the topological and nontopological charge and energy flow in quantum Hall systems.
The Hall effect and its varieties such as quantum, anomalous, and spin Hall effects, provide indispensable tools for the characterization of electronic and magnetic properties of materials, metrology, and spintronics. The conventional four-probe Hall configuration is generally not amenable to measurements at nanoscale, due to current shunting by the Hall electrodes. We demonstrate that Hall measurements on the nanoscale can be facilitated by the three-probe Hall configuration that avoids the shunting problem. We illustrate the efficiency of the proposed approach with anomalous Hall effect-base…
The geometric effects of two-dimensional curved systems have been an interesting topic for a long time. A Möbius surface is specifically considered. For a relativistic particle confined to the nontrivial surface, we give the effective Dirac equation in the thin-layer quantization formalism, and we find a geometric gauge potential that results from the rotation transformation of the local frame moving on Möbius strip, and an effective mass that is from the rescaling transformation. Intriguingly, the geometric gauge potential can play a role of monopole magnetic field for the particles with spin…
A spin Hall current can circulate in a Corbino disk with spin-orbit interactions in the presence of a radial charge current, without encountering the sample edge problem. We have suggested several experiments to directly detect and manipulate the spin Hall current in this system. A fictitious two-dimensional magnetic monopole can be created in a Corbino disk with the Rashba interaction by a circular charge current induced either by a spin Hall current in the presence of a ferromagnetic junction or by a perpendicular external magnetic field.
In this work, we develop a nanoscale magnetic field sensor based on a spin-Hall nano-oscillator (SHNO) device. We fabricate constriction-based SHNO devices using Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$/Au$_{0.25}$Pt$_{0.75}$ bilayer and use them to demonstrate quasi-DC sensing up to kilohertz-scale frequencies under a bias field of 400 Oe in the sample plane. The magnetic field sensing is based on the linear dependence of SHNO oscillation frequency on external magnetic field. The detectivity of the sensor is as low as 0.21 $μ$T/$\sqrt{\mbox{Hz}}$ at 100 Hz, with an effective sensing area of 0.32 $μ$m$^2$, making S…
Concept of the topological order is useful to characterize anisotropic superconductivities. The spin Hall conductance distinguishes superconductivities with the same symmetry. The Chern number for the spin Hall conductance is given by the covering degree of a closed surface around the Dirac monopole. It gives a clear illustration for the on-critical condition for the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ supreconductivitiy with non zero chemical potential. Non trivial topological orders on the triangular lattice are also presented and demonstrated by the topological objects.
We realize a nanoscale-area Mach-Zehnder interferometer with co-propagating quantum Hall spin-resolved edge states and demonstrate the persistence of gate-controlled quantum interference oscillations, as a function of an applied magnetic field, at relatively large temperatures. Arrays of top-gate magnetic nanofingers are used to induce a resonant charge transfer between the pair of spin-resolved edge states. To account for the pattern of oscillations measured as a function of magnetic field and gate voltage, we have developed a simple theoretical model which satisfactorily reproduces the data.
We study theoretically the charged current above a topological insulator (TI) separated by a ferromagnetic insulating layer. An unconventional Hall response occurs in the conducting layer on top of the TI which approaches to a constant value independent of R for R<<l and decays with R^{-1} for R>>l, where R is the separation between TI and conducting layer and l is the screening length. In the comoving frame, it can be interpreted as a monopole current attached to the TI surface. The same mechanism gives the Hall response and deflection of the electron beam injected to the surface of insulatin…
We suggest the exactly solvable model of oscillator on the four-dimensional sphere interacting with the SU(2) Yang monopole. We show, that the properties of the model essentially depend on the monopole charge.
"Magnetic monopole" is an exotic quantum excitation in pyrochlore U(1) spin liquid, and its emergence is purely of quantum origin and has no classical analogue. We predict topological thermal Hall effect (TTHE) of "magnetic monopoles" and present this prediction through non-Kramers doublets. We observe that, when the external magnetic field polarizes the Ising component of the local moment, internally this corresponds to the induction of emergent dual U(1) gauge flux for the "magnetic monopoles". The motion of "magnetic monopoles" is then twisted by the induced dual gauge flux. This emergent L…
Vortex magnetic structure in artificial honeycomb lattice provides a unique platform to explore emergent properties due to the additional Berry phase curvature imparted by chiral magnetization to circulating electrons via direct interaction. We argue that while the perpendicularly-aligned magnetic component leads to the quantized flux of monopole at the center of the Berry sphere, the in-plane vortex circulation of magnetization gives rise to unexpected non-trivial topological Berry phase due to the gauge field transformation. The unprecedented effect signifies the importance of vector potenti…

We addressed quantization phenomena in transport and vortex/precession-motion of low-dimensional systems, stationary quantization of confined motion in phase space due to oscillatory dynamics or compacti fication of space and time for steady-state systems (e.g., particle in a box or torus, Brillouin zone, and Matsubara time zone or Matsubara quantized frequencies), and the quantization of sources. We discuss how the self-consistent Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition permeates the relationships between the quantization of integer Hall effect, fractional quantum Hall effect, the Berezenskii-…
The $Z_2$ invariant for filled bands in the ground states of systems with time reversal invariance characterizes the number of stable pairs of edge states. Here we study the $Z_2 $ invariant using band touching methods discussed in a recent previous work \cite{roy2006zcq} and extend the study to three dimensions. Band collisions preserve the $Z_2 $ invariant both in two and three dimensions, but there are crucial differences in the two cases. In three dimensions,we find a novel fourth $Z_2 $ invariant which is characterized by a "trapped monopole" in momentum space. If the monopole charge in h…
An electric charge near the surface of a topological insulator induces an image magnetic monopole. Here, we show that if the topological insulator surface has a negative curvature, namely in the case of a semispherical cavity, the induced Hall current reverses its rotation as the electric charge crosses the semisphere geometric focus. Such a reversion is shown to be equivalent of inverting the charge of the image magnetic monopole. We also discuss upon the case of a semicylindrical cavity, where Hall current reversion appears to be feasible of probing in realistic experiments.
We investigate the $SO(5)$ Landau problem in the $SO(4)$ monopole gauge field background by applying the techniques of the non-linear realization of quantum field theory. The $SO(4)$ monopole carries two topological invariants, the second Chern number and a generalized Euler number, specified by the $SU(2)$ monopole and anti-monopole indices, $I_+$ and $I_-$. The energy levels of the $SO(5)$ Landau problem are grouped into $\text{Min}(I_+, I_-) +1$ sectors, each of which holds Landau levels. In the $n$-sector, $N$th Landau level eigenstates constitute the $SO(5)$ irreducible representation wit…
We describe how the three-dimensional quantum spin Hall phase arises from the insulator phase by changing an external parameter. In 3D systems without inversion symmetry, a gapless phase should appear between the two phases with a bulk gap. The gapless points are monopoles and antimonopoles (in k space), whose topological nature is the source of this gapless phase. In general, when the external parameter is changed from the ordinary insulator phase, two monopole-antimonopole pairs are created and the system becomes gapless. The gap-closing points (monopoles and antimonopoles) then move in the …

The observation of isolated positive and negative charges, but not isolated magnetic north and south poles, is an old puzzle. Instead, evidence of effective magnetic monopoles has been found in the abstract momentum space. Apart from Hall-related effects, few observable consequences of these abstract monopoles are known. Here, we show that it is possible to manipulate the monopoles by external magnetic fields and probe them by universal conductance fluctuation (UCF) measurements in ferromagnets with strong spin-orbit coupling. The observed fluctuations are not noise, but reproducible quasiperi…
A unified theoretical treatment is presented to describe the physics of electron dynamics in semiconductor and graphene systems. Electron spin fast alignment with the Zeeman magnetic field (physical or effective) is treated as a form of adiabatic spin evolution which necessarily generates a monopole in magnetic space. One could transform this monopole into the physical and intuitive topological magnetic fields in the useful momentum (K) or real spaces (R). The physics of electron dynamics related to spin Hall, torque, oscillations and other technologically useful spinor effects can be inferred…
Recently, a type of Hall effect due to an unusual layer-locked Berry curvature called the layer Hall effect (LHE) has been reported in the even-layered two-dimensional antiferromagnetic (AFM) MnBi2Te4 [A. Gao et.al, Nature 595, 521 (2021)]. In this work, we report that the quantization of LHE, which we call the quantum anomalous layer Hall effect (QALHE), can be realized in MnBi2Te4. The QALHE originates from kicking a layer-locked Berry-curvature monopole out of the Fermi sea by a vertielectric cal field. Remarkably, we demonstrate that the electric-field reversal can switch the sign of the q…
The entanglement of the charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom can give rise to emergent behavior especially in thin films, surfaces and interfaces. Often, materials that exhibit those properties require large spin orbit coupling. We hypothesize that the emergent behavior can also occur due to spin, electron and phonon interactions in widely studied simple materials such as Si. That is, large intrinsic spin-orbit coupling is not an essential requirement for emergent behavior. The central hypothesis is that when one of the specimen dimensions is of the same order (or smaller) as the spin d…
We find a breather behavior of the dipole chain, this breather excitation obey fractional statistics, it could be an experimental quantity to detect anyon. A Hall effect of magnetic monopole in a dipole chain of ultracold molecules is also presented, we show that this Hall effect can induce the flip of magnetic dipole chain.
In this paper we have enlightened the spin related issues of tilted Electron vortex beams. We have shown that in the skyrmionic model of electron we can have the spin Hall current considering the tilted type of electron vortex beam. We have considered the monopole charge of the tilted vortex as time dependent and through the time variation of the monopole charge we can explain the spin Hall effect of electron vortex beams. Besides, with an external magnetic field we can have a spin filter configuration.
We analyze a generalized Dirac system, where the dispersion along the $k_{x}$ and $k_{y}$ axes is $N$-th power and linear along the $k_{z}$ axis. When we apply magnetic field, there emerge $N$ monopole-antimonopole pairs beyond a certain critical field in general. As the direction of the magnetic field is rotated toward the $z$ axis, monopoles move to the north pole while antimonopoles move to the south pole. When the magnetic field becomes parallel to the $z$ axis, they merge into one monopole or one antimonopole whose monopole charge is $\pm N$. The resultant system is a multiple-Weyl semime…
We develop the description of non-commutative geometry of the 4-dimensional quantum Hall fluid's theory proposed recently by Zhang and Hu. The non-commutative structure of fuzzy $S^{4}$ appears naturally in this theory. The fuzzy monopole harmonics, which are the essential elements in this non-commutative geometry, are explicitly constructed and their obeying the matrix algebra is obtained. This matrix algebra is associative. We also propose a fusion scheme of the fuzzy monopole harmonics of the coupling system from those of the subsystems, and determine the fusion rule in such fusion scheme. …
Electrostatic gating is essential for defining and control of semiconducting devices. However, nano-fabrication processes required for depositing gates inevitably degrade the pristine quality of the material of interest. Examples of materials that suffer from such degradation include ultra-high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs), graphene, topological insulators, and nanowires. To preserve the pristine material properties, we have developed a flip-chip setup where gates are separated from the material by a vacuum, which allows nanoscale electrostatic gating of the mate…

The realization of high-performance, small-footprint, on-chip inductors remains a challenge in radio-frequency and power microelectronics, where they perform vital energy transduction in filters and power converters. Modern planar inductors consist of metallic spirals that consume significant chip area, resulting in low inductance densities. We present a novel method for magnetic energy transduction that utilizes ferromagnetic islands (FIs) on the surface of a 3D time-reversal-invariant topological insulator (TI) to produce paradigmatically different inductors. Depending on the chemical potent…

The ordinary Hall effect is driven by the Lorentz force, while its anomalous counterpart occurs in ferromagnets. Here we show that the Berry curvature monopole of non-magnetic 2D spin-3/2 holes leads to a novel Hall effect linear in an applied in-plane magnetic field B_x. There is no Lorentz force hence no ordinary Hall effect, while all disorder contributions vanish to leading order in B_x. This intrinsic phenomenon, which we term the anomalous planar Hall effect (APHE), provides a non-quantized footprint of topological transport directly accessible in p-type semiconductors.
We propose that a quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI) can be realized in a nanopatterned two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with a small in-plane magnetic field and a high carrier density. The Berry curvatures originating from the in-plane magnetic field and Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling, in combination with a nanoscale honeycomb lattice potential modulation, lead to topologically nontrivial insulating states in the 2DEG without Landau levels. In the bulk insulating gaps, the anomalous Hall conductivity is quantized $-e^{2}/h$, corresponding to a finite Chern number -1. There…
Microscopic studies of superconductors and their vortices play a pivotal role in our understanding of the mechanisms underlying superconductivity. Local measurements of penetration depths or magnetic stray-fields enable access to fundamental aspects of superconductors such as nanoscale variations of superfluid densities or the symmetry of their order parameter. However, experimental tools, which offer quantitative, nanoscale magnetometry and operate over the large range of temperature and magnetic fields relevant to address many outstanding questions in superconductivity, are still missing. He…
The quantum Hall effect is a remarkable manifestation of quantized transport in a two-dimensional electron gas. Given its technological relevance, it is important to understand its development in realistic nanoscale devices. In this work we present how the appearance of different edge channels in a field-effect device is influenced by the inhomogeneous capacitance profile existing near the sample edges, a condition of particular relevance for graphene. We apply this practical idea to experiments on high quality graphene, demonstrating the potential of quantum Hall transport as a spatially reso…
We construct higher dimensional quantum Hall systems based on fuzzy spheres. It is shown that fuzzy spheres are realized as spheres in colored monopole backgrounds. The space noncommutativity is related to higher spins which is originated from the internal structure of fuzzy spheres. In $2k$-dimensional quantum Hall systems, Laughlin-like wave function supports fractionally charged excitations, $q=m^{-{1/2}k(k+1)}$ (m is odd). Topological objects are ($2k-2$)-branes whose statistics are determined by the linking number related to the general Hopf map. Higher dimensional quantum Hall systems ex…
Topological spin textures can serve as non-volatile information carriers. Here we study the current-induced dynamics of an isolated magnetic skyrmion on a nanoscale square-grid pinning pattern formed by orthogonal defect lines with reduced magnetic anisotropy. The skyrmion on the square grid can be pixelated with a quantized size of the grid. We demonstrate that the position, size, and shape of skyrmion on the square grid are electrically configurable. The skyrmion center is quantized to be on the grid and the skyrmion may show a hopping motion instead of a continuous motion. We find that the …
Van der Waals heterostructures have recently been identified as providing many opportunities to create new two-dimensional materials, and in particular to produce materials with topologically interesting states. Here we show that it is possible to create such heterostructures with multiple topological phases in a single nanoscale island. We discuss their growth within the framework of diffusion-limited aggregation, the formation of moiré patterns due to the differing crystallographies of the materials comprising the heterostructure, and the potential to engineer both the electronic structure a…
In three dimensional (3D) momentum space of solid crystal, a topological phase boundary separating the Chern insulating layers from normal insulating layers may exist, where the gap must be closed, resulting in a "Chern semi-metal" state with topologically unavoidable band-crossings at fermi level. This state, if found to exist, is a condensed-matter realization of chiral fermions (or called Weyl fermions) in (3+1)D, and should exhibit remarkable features, like magnetic monopoles in the bulk and fermi arcs on the surface. Here we predict, based on first-principles calculations, that such novel…
In intrinsic magnetic topological insulators, Dirac surface state gaps are prerequisites for quantum anomalous Hall and axion insulating states. Unambiguous experimental identification of these gaps has proved to be a challenge, however. Here we use molecular beam epitaxy to grow intrinsic MnBi2Te4 thin films. Using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, we directly visualize the Dirac mass gap and its disappearance below and above the magnetic order temperature. We further reveal the interplay of Dirac mass gaps and local magnetic defects. We find that in high defect regions, the Dirac m…
We study a class of defect quantum field theories where the quantum field theory in the 3+1-dimensional bulk is a free photon and charged matter and the interactions of the photons with the charges occur entirely on a 2+1-dimensional defect. We observe that at the fully quantum level, the effective action of such a theory is still a defect field theory with free photons propagating in the bulk and the nonlinearities in the quantum corrections to the Maxwell equations confined to the defect. We use this observation to show that the defect field theory has interesting electromagnetic properties.…
Spin waves (SWs), the collective precessional motion of spins in a magnetic system, have been proposed as a promising alternative system with low-power consumption for encoding information. Spin Hall nano-oscillator (SHNO), a new-type spintronic nano-device, can electrically excite and control spin waves in both nanoscale magnetic metals and insulators with low damping by the spin current due to spin Hall effect. Here, we will review recent progress about spin-wave excitation and experimental parameters dependent spectrum in SHNOs. The nanogap SHNOs based on in-plane magnetization Py/Pt exhibi…
We measure the local near-field spin in topological edge state waveguides that emulate the quantum spin Hall effect. We reveal a highly structured spin density distribution that is not linked to a unique pseudospin value. From experimental near-field real-space maps and numerical calculations, we confirm that this local structure is essential in understanding the properties of optical edge states and light-matter interactions. The global spin is reduced by a factor of 30 in the near field and, for certain frequencies, flipped compared to the pseudospin measured in the far-field. We experimenta…
Injection of unpolarized charge current through the longitudinal leads of a four-terminal two-dimensional electron gas with the Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling and/or SO scattering off extrinsic impurities is responsible not only for the pure spin Hall current in the transverse leads, but also for random time-dependent current fluctuations. We employ the scattering approach to current-current correlations in multiterminal nanoscale conductors to analyze the shot noise of transverse pure spin Hall and zero charge current, or transverse spin current and non-zero charge Hall current, driven by un…
Understanding the mechanisms governing the optical activity of layered-stacked materials is crucial to the design of devices aimed at manipulating light at the nanoscale. Here, we show that both twisted and slid bilayer graphene are chiral systems that can deflect the polarization of linear polarized light. However, only twisted bilayer graphene supports circular dichroism. Our calculation scheme, which is based on the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, is particularly efficient for calculating the optical-conductivity tensor. Specifically, it allows us to show the chirality of hybridized st…
In recent years, electrical spin injection and detection has grown into a lively area of research in the field of spintronics. Spin injection into a paramagnetic material is usually achieved by means of a ferromagnetic source, whereas the induced spin accumulation or associated spin currents are detected by means of a second ferromagnet or the reciprocal spin Hall effect, respectively. This article reviews the current status of this subject, describing both recent progress and well-established results. The emphasis is on experimental techniques and accomplishments that brought about important …
Photonic structures offer unique opportunities for controlling light-matter interaction, including the photonic spin Hall effect associated with the transverse spin-dependent displacement of light that propagates in specially designed optical media. However, due to small spin-orbit coupling, the photonic spin Hall effect is usually weak at the nanoscale. Here we suggest theoretically and demonstrate experimentally, in both optics and microwave experiments, the photonic spin Hall effect enhanced by topologically protected edge states in subwavelength arrays of resonant dielectric particles. Bas…
The unconventional (half-integer) quantum Hall effect for a single species of Dirac fermions is analyzed. We discuss possible experimental measurements of the half-integer Hall conductance $g_{xy}$ of topological insulator surface states and explain how to reconcile Laughlin's flux insertion argument with half-integer $g_{xy}$. Using a vortex state representation of Landau Level wavefunctions, we calculate current density beyond linear response, which is in particular relevant to the topological image monopole effect. As a major result, the field theory describing the localization physics of t…
