We describe how the three-dimensional quantum spin Hall phase arises from the insulator phase by changing an external parameter. In 3D systems without inversion symmetry, a gapless phase should appear between the two phases with a bulk gap. The gapless points are monopoles and antimonopoles (in k space), whose topological nature is the source of this gapless phase. In general, when the external parameter is changed from the ordinary insulator phase, two monopole-antimonopole pairs are created and the system becomes gapless. The gap-closing points (monopoles and antimonopoles) then move in the k space as the parameter is changed further. They eventually annihilate in pairs, with changing partners from the pair creations, and the system opens a gap again, entering into the quantum spin Hall phase.
We propose a construction of a global phase diagram for the quantum Hall effect. This global phase diagram is based on our previous constructions of visibility diagrams in the context of the Quantum Hall Effect. The topology of the phase diagram we obtain is in good agreement with experimental observations (when the spin effect can be neglected). This phase diagram does not show floating.
We analyze various properties of the visibility diagrams that can be used in the context of modular symmetries and confront them to some recent experimental developments in the Quantum Hall Effect. We show that a suitable physical interpretation of the visibility diagrams which permits one to describe successfully the observed architecture of the Quantum Hall states gives rise naturally to a stripe structure reproducing some of the experimental features that have been observed in the study of the quantum fluctuations of the Hall conductance. Furthermore, we exhibit new properties of the visibi…
We numerically study the interacting quantum Hall skyrmion system based on the Chern-Simons action. By noticing that the action is invariant under global spin rotations in the spin space with respect to the magnetic field direction, we obtain the low-energy effective action for a many skyrmion system. Performing extensive molecular dynamics simulations, we establish the thermodynamic phase diagram for a many skyrmion system.
We present a rigorous microscopic theory of the extrinsic spin Hall effect in disordered graphene based on a nonperturbative quantum diagrammatic treatment incorporating skew scattering and anomalous---impurity concentration-independent---quantum corrections on equal footing. The leading skew scattering contribution to the spin Hall conductivity is shown to quantitatively agree with Boltzmann transport theory over a wide range of parameters. Our self-consistent approach---where all topologically equivalent noncrossing diagrams are resummed---unveils that the skewness generated by spin--orbit-a…
We extensively study the localization and the quantum Hall effect in the Hofstadter butterfly, which emerges in a two-dimensional electron system with a weak two-dimensional periodic potential. We numerically calculate the Hall conductivity and the localization length for finite systems with the disorder in general magnetic fields, and estimate the energies of the extended levels in an infinite system. We obtain the Hall plateau diagram on the whole region of the Hofstadter butterfly, and propose a theory for the evolution of the plateau structure with increasing disorder. There we show that a…
We use magnetotransport in dual-gated magnetic topological insulator heterostructures to map out a phase diagram of the topological Hall and quantum anomalous Hall effects as a function of the chemical potential (primarily determined by the back gate voltage) and the asymmetric potential (primarily determined by the top gate voltage). A theoretical model that includes both surface states and valence band quantum well states allows the evaluation of the variation of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and carrier density with gate voltages. The qualitative agreement between experiment and the…
The temperature driven flow lines of the Hall and dissipative magnetoconductance data (σ_{xy},σ_{xx}) are studied in the fractional quantum Hall regime for a 2D electron system in GaAs/Al_{x}Ga_{1-x}As heterostructures. The flow lines are rather well described by a recent unified scaling theory developed for both the integer and the fractional quantum Hall effect in a totally spin-polarized 2D electron system which predicts that one (σ_{xy},σ_{xx}) point determines a complete flow line.
We report in this paper results of experimental and theoretical studies of transitions between different integer quantum Hall phases, as well as transition between the insulating phase and quantum Hall phases at high magnetic fields. We focus mainly on universal properties of the transitions. We demonstrate that properly defined conductivity tensor is universal at the transitions. We also present numerical results of a non-interacting electron model, which suggest that the Thouless conductance is universal at integer quantum Hall transitions, just like the conductivity tensor. Finite temperatu…
We make a number of precise experimental predictions for observing the various magnetic phases and the quantum phase transitions between them in the $ν$=2 bilayer quantum Ha ll system. In particular, we analyze the effect of an external bias voltage on the quantum phase diagram, finding that a finite bias should readily enable the experimental observation of the recently predicted novel canted antiferromagnetic phase in transport and spin polarization measurements.
We present a phase diagram for a two-dimensional electron system with two populated subbands. Using a gated GaAs/AlGaAs single quantum well, we have mapped out the phases of various quantum Hall states in the density-magnetic filed plane. The experimental phase diagram shows a very different topology from the conventional Landau fan diagram. We find regions of negative differential Hall resistance which are interpreted as preliminary evidence of the long sought reentrant quantum Hall transitions. We discuss the origins of the anomalous topology and the negative differential Hall resistance in …
An exact spin mapping is identified to simplify the recently proposed hard-core boson description (Demler and Das Sarma, Phys. Rev. Lett., to be published) of the bilayer quantum Hall system at filling factor 2. The effective spin model describes an easy-plane ferromagnet subject to an external Zeeman field. The phase diagram of this effective model is determined exactly and found to agree with the approximate calculation of Demler and Das Sarma, while the Goldstone-mode spectrum, order parameter stiffness and Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature in the canted antiferromagnetic phase are computed a…
We experimentally study the phase diagram of the integer quantized Hall effect, as a function of density and magnetic field. We used a two dimensional hole system confined in a Ge/SiGe quantum well, where all energy levels are resolved, because the Zeeman splitting is comparable to the cyclotron energy. At low fields and close to the quantum Hall liquid-to-insulator transition, we observe the floating up of the lowest energy level, but NO FLOATING of any higher levels, rather a merging of these levels into the insulating state. For a given filling factor, only direct transitions between the in…
The quantum Hall system in the lowest Landau level with Zeeman term is studied by a two-state model, which has a chiral invariance. Using a diagrammatic analysis, we examine this two-state model with random impurity scattering, and find the exact value of the conductivity at the Zeeman energy $E = Δ$. We further study the conductivity at the another extended state $E = E_1$ ($ E_1 > Δ$). We find that the values of the conductivities at $E = 0$ and $E = E_1$ do not depend upon the value of the Zeeman energy $Δ$. We discuss also the case where the Zeeman energy $Δ$ becomes a random field.
We show analytically and numerically that omission of quantum interference from the Chalker-Coddington model of the integer quantum Hall effect gives a localization length exponent nu=4/3 as in ordinary two-dimensional percolation. Thus, contrary to semi-classical scaling arguments, tunneling alone does not lead to nu=7/3.
We present a new theoretical approach for the integer quantum Hall effect, which is able to describe the inter-plateau transitions as well as the transition to the Hall insulator. We find two regimes (metallic and insulator like) of the top Landau level, in which the dissipative bulk current appears in different directions. The regimes are separated by a temperature invariant point.
We consider the action of the modular group $Γ(2)$ on the set of positive rational fractions. From this, we derive a model for a classification of fractional (as well as integer) Hall states which can be visualized on two ``visibility" diagrams, the first one being associated with even denominator fractions whereas the second one is linked to odd denominator fractions. We use this model to predict, among some interesting physical quantities, the relative ratios of the width of the different transversal resistivity plateaus. A numerical simulation of the tranversal resistivity plot based on thi…
We investigate the Hall conductance of a two-dimensional Chern insulator coupled to an environment causing gain and loss. Introducing a biorthogonal linear response theory, we show that sufficiently strong gain and loss lead to a characteristic non-analytical contribution to the Hall conductance. Near its onset, this contribution exhibits a universal power-law with a power 3/2 as a function of Dirac mass, chemical potential and gain strength. Our results pave the way for the study of non-Hermitian topology in electronic transport experiments.
The question of the universality of the longitudinal peak conductivity at the integer quantum Hall transition is considered. For this purpose, a system of 2D Dirac fermions with random mass characterised by variance $g$ is proposed as a model which undergoes a quantum Hall transition. Whilst for some specific models the longitudinal peak conductivity $σ_{xx}$ was found to be universal (in agreement with the conjecture of Lee et al. as well as with some numerical work), we find that $σ_{xx}$ is reduced by a factor $(1+g/2π)^{-1}$, at least for small $g$. This provides some theoretical evidence …
Motivated by recent experiments [Zhang \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{95}, 216801 (2005) and Ellenberger \textit{et al.}, cond-mat/0602271] reporting novel ringlike structures in the density--magnetic-field ($n_{2D}$\emph{--B}) diagrams of the longitudinal resistivity $ρ_{xx}$ of quantum wells with two subbands, we investigate theoretically here the magneto-transport properties of these quantum-Hall systems. We determine $ρ_{xx}$ via both the Hartree and the Kohn-Sham self-consistent schemes plus the Kubo formula. While the Hartree calculation yields diamond-shaped structures in the…
We present complete analytical and numerical results that demonstrate the anomalous universal fluctuations of the spin-Hall conductance in chiral materials such as graphene and topological insulators. We investigated both the corresponding fluctuations, the Universal Fractionated and the Universal Quantized, and also the open channels orbital number crossover between the two regimes. In particular, we show that the Wigner-Dyson symmetries does not properly describe such conductances and the preponderant role of the chiral classes on the Dirac quantum dots. The results are analytical and solve …
We numerically study the interplay of band structure, topological invariant and disorder effect in two-dimensional electron system of graphene in a magnetic field. Two \emph{distinct} quantum Hall effect (QHE) regimes exist in the energy band with the unconventional "half-integer" QHE appearing near the band center, consistent with the experimental observation. The latter is more robust against disorder scattering than the conventional QHE states near the band edges. The phase diagram for the unconventional QHE is obtained where the destruction of the Hall plateaus at strong disorder is throug…
Study of the ground-state electronic spin-polarization can permit discovery and identification of novel correlated phases in the quantum Hall (QH) system. It can thus determine the potential usefulness of QH states for quantum computing. However, prior measurements involving optical and NMR techniques may perturb the system away from delicate ground-states. Here, we present spin-resolved pulsed tunneling (SRPT) that precisely determines the complete phase diagram of the ground-state spin-polarization as a function of magnetic field (B) and filling factor (ν). We observe fully-polarized ν = 5/2…
We report on an effective vector-field theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect that takes into account projection to Landau levels. The effective theory refers to neither the composite-boson nor composite-fermion picture, but properly reproduces the results consistent with them, thus revealing the universality of the long-wavelength characteristics of the quantum Hall states. In particular, the dual-field Lagrangian of Lee and Zhang is obtained, and an argument is given to verify the identification by Goldhaber and Jain of a composite fermion as a dressed electron. The generalization to d…
The phase diagram of integer quantum Hall effect is numerically determined in the tight-binding model, which can account for overall features of recently obtained experimental phase diagram. In particular, the quantum Hall plateaus are terminated by two distinct insulating phases, characterized by the Hall resistance with classic and quantized values, respectively, which is also in good agreement with experiments.
We present a simple classification of the different liquid and solid phases of quantum Hall systems in the limit where the Coulomb interaction between the electrons is significant, i.e. away from integral filling factors. This classification, and a criterion for the validity of the mean-field approximation in the charge-density-wave phase, is based on scaling arguments concerning the effective interaction potential of electrons restricted to an arbitrary Landau level. Finite-temperature effects are investigated within the same formalism, and a good agreement with recent experiments is obtained…
The renormalization theory of the quantum Hall effect relies primarily on the non-perturbative concept of theta renormalization by instantons. Within the generalized non-linear sigma model approach initiated by Finkelstein we obtain the physical observables of the interacting electron gas, formulate the general (topological) principles by which the Hall conductance is robustly quantized and derive - for the first time - explicit expressions for the non-perturbative (instanton) contributions to the renormalization group beta- and gamma- functions. Our results are in complete agreement with the …
Recent calculations of the edge tunneling exponents in quantum Hall states appear to contradict their topological nature. We revisit this issue and find no fundamental discrepancies. In a microscopic model of fractional quantum Hall liquids with electron-electron interaction and confinement, we calculate the edge Green's function via exact diagonalization. Our results for $ν= 1/3$ and 2/3 suggest that in the presence of Coulomb interaction, the sharpness of the edge and the strength of the edge confining potential, which can lead to edge reconstruction, are the parameters that are relevant to …
A new universality of metal-insulator transition in integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) system is studied based on a lattice model, where the IQHE states only exist within a finite range of Fermi energy in the presence of disorders. A two-parameter scaling law is found at the high-energy boundary where direct transitions from high IQHE states to insulator occur. We find $ρ_{xx}= ρ_{xy}$ at the critical point whose value can continuously vary as a single function of the Landau-level filling number $n_ν$. Such a new universality well explains recent experiment by Song et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 78,…
Using heuristic arguments and numerical simulations it is argued that the critical exponent $ν$ describing the localization length divergence at the quantum Hall transition is modified in the presence of spin-orbit scattering with short range correlations. The exponent is very close to $ν=4/3$, the percolation correlation length exponent, the prediction of a semi-classical argument. In addition, a region of weakly localized regime, where the localization length is exponentially large, is conjectured.
We have measured the temperature dependence of the conductivity $σ_{xx}$ of a two-dimensional electron system deep into the localized regime of the quantum Hall plateau transition. Using variable-range hopping theory we are able to extract directly the localization length $ξ$ from this experiment. We use our results to study the scaling behavior of $ξ$ as a function of the filling factor distance $|δν|$ to the critical point of the transition. We find for all samples a power-law behavior $ξ\propto|δν|^{-γ}$ with a universal scaling exponent $γ= 2.3$ as proposed theoretically.
We consider a bilayer quantum Hall system at total filling fraction nu=2 in tilted magnetic field allowing for charge imbalance as well as tunneling between the two layers. Using an "unrestricted Hartree Fock," previously discussed by Burkov and MacDonald (Phys Rev B 66 115323 2002), we examine the zero temperature global phase diagrams that would be accessed experimentally by changing the in-plane field and the bias voltage between the layers while keeping the tunneling between the two layers fixed. In accordance with previous work, we find symmetric and ferromagnetic phases as well as a firs…
Using the renormalisation group (RG) we study two dimensional electromagnetic coulomb gas and extended Sine-Gordon theories invariant under the modular group SL(2,Z). The flow diagram is established from the scaling equations, and we derive the critical behaviour at the various transition points of the diagram. Following proposal for a SL(2,Z) duality between different quantum Hall fluids, we discuss the analogy between this flow and the global quantum Hall phase diagram.
We report a theoretical investigation on spin-Hall conductance fluctuation of disordered four terminal devices in the presence of Rashba or/and Dresselhaus spin-orbital interactions in two dimensions. As a function of disorder, the spin-Hall conductance $G_{sH}$ shows ballistic, diffusive and insulating transport regimes. For given spin-orbit interactions, a universal spin-Hall conductance fluctuation (USCF) is found in the diffusive regime. The value of the USCF depends on the spin-orbit coupling $t_{so}$, but is independent of other system parameters. It is also independent of whether Rashba…
The effects of randomness are investigated in the fractional quantum Hall systems. Based on the Chern-Simons Ginzburg-Landou theory and considering relevant quasi-particle tunneling, the edge state network model for the hierarchical state is introduced and the plateau-plateau transition and liquid-insulator transition are discussed. This model has duality which corresponds to the relation of the quantum Hall liquid phase and the Hall insulating phase and reveals a mechanism in the weak coupling regime.
We calculate the phase diagram of the two component fractional quantum Hall effect as a function of the spin or valley Zeeman energy and the filling factor, which reveals new phase transitions and phase boundaries spanning many fractional plateaus. This phase diagram is relevant to the fractional quantum Hall effect in graphene and in GaAs and AlAs quantum wells, when either the spin or valley degree of freedom is active.
We report the results of a microscopic theory, based on the topological concept of a $θ$ vacuum, which show that the Coulomb potential, unlike any finite ranged interaction potential, renders the longstanding problem of the plateau transitions in the quantum Hall regime non-Fermi liquid like. Our present results, which are of outstanding significance for quantum phase transitions in general and composite fermion ideas in particular, provide a novel understanding of the critical exponent values that have recently been (re)taken from a series of state-of-the-art quantum Hall samples.
We give a perspective on the Hofstadter butterfly (fractal energy spectrum in magnetic fields), which we have shown to arise specifically in three-dimensional(3D) systems in our previous work. (i) We first obtain the `phase diagram' on a parameter space of the transfer energies and the magnetic field for the appearance of Hofstadter's butterfly spectrum in anisotropic crystals in 3D. (ii) We show that the orientation of the external magnetic field can be arbitrary to have the 3D butterfly. (iii) We show that the butterfly is beyond the semiclassical description. (iv) The required magnetic fiel…
The Système Internationale d'unités (SI system) is about to undergo its biggest change in half a century by redefining the units for mass and current in terms of the fundamental constants h and e, respectively. This change crucially relies on the exactness of the relationships which link these constants to measurable quantities. Here we directly compare the integer quantum Hall effect in epitaxial graphene with that in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. We find no difference of the quantized resistance value within the relative standard uncertainty of our measurement of 8.6\times10-11, being the mo…
The Pfaffian state, which may describe the quantized Hall plateau observed at Landau level filling fraction $ν= 5/2$, can support topologically-protected qubits with extremely low error rates. Braiding operations also allow perfect implementation of certain unitary transformations of these qubits. However, in the case of the Pfaffian state, this set of unitary operations is not quite sufficient for universal quantum computation (i.e. is not dense in the unitary group). If some topologically unprotected operations are also used, then the Pfaffian state supports universal quantum computation, al…
This article reports on our microscopic investigations of the edge of the fractional quantum Hall state at filling factor $ν=1/3$. We show that the interaction dependence of the wave function is well described in an approximation that includes mixing with higher composite-fermion Landau levels in the lowest order. We then proceed to calculate the equal time edge Green function, which provides evidence that the Luttinger exponent characterizing the decay of the Green function at long distances is interaction dependent. The relevance of this result to tunneling experiments is discussed.
Flow diagram of $(σ_{xx}, σ_{xy})$ in finite-frequency ($ω$) regime is numerically studied for graphene quantum Hall effect (QHE) system. The ac flow diagrams turn out to show qualitatively similar behavior as the dc flow diagrams, which can be understood that the dynamical length scale determined by the frequency poses a relevant cutoff for the renormalization flow. Then the two parameter flow is discussed in terms of the dynamical scaling theory. We also discuss the larger-$ω$ regime which exhibits classical flows driven by the raw frequency $ω$.
We compute the phase diagram of the HgTe/CdTe quantum wells in the 3 dimensional (3D) parameter space of Dirac mass, Fermi level and disorder strength. The phase diagram reveals the Quantum spin-Hall, the metallic and the normal insulating phases. The phase boundary of the Quantum spin-Hall state is shown to be strongly deformed by the disorder. Taking specific cuts into this 3D phase diagram, we recover the so called topological Anderson insulator (TAI) phase, but now we can demonstrate explicitly that TAI is not a distinct phase and instead it is part of the Quantum spin-Hall phase. The calc…
We present a phase diagram for a double quantum well bilayer electron gas in the quantum Hall regime at total filling factor $ν=1$, based on exact numerical calculations of the topological Chern number matrix and the (inter-layer) superfluid density. We find three phases: a quantized Hall state with pseudo-spin superfluidity, a quantized Hall state with pseudo-spin ``gauge-glass'' order, and a decoupled composite Fermi liquid. Comparison with experiments provides a consistent explanation of the observed quantum Hall plateau, Hall drag plateau and vanishing Hall drag resistance, as well as the …
Using a mapping of a layered three-dimensional system with significant inter-layer tunneling onto a spin-Hamiltonian, the phase diagram in the strong magnetic field limit is obtained in the semi-classical approximation. This phase diagram, which exhibit a metallic phase for a finite range of energies and magnetic fields, and the calculated associated critical exponent, $ν=4/3$, agree excellently with existing numerical calculations. The implication of this work for the quantum Hall effect in three dimensions is discussed.

Monolayer graphene at charge neutrality in a quantizing magnetic field is a quantum Hall ferromagnet. Due to the spin and valley (near) degeneracies, there is a plethora of possible ground states. Previous theoretical work, based on a stringent ultra short-range assumption on the symmetry-allowed interactions, predicts a phase diagram with distinct regions of spin-polarized, canted antiferromagnetic, inter-valley coherent, and charge density wave order. While early experiments suggested that the system was in the canted antiferromagnetic phase at a perpendicular field, recent scanning tunnelin…

The sample averaged longitudinal two-terminal conductance and the respective Kubo-conductivity are calculated at quantum critical points in the integer quantum Hall regime. In the limit of large system size, both transport quantities are found to be the same within numerical uncertainty in the lowest Landau band, $0.60\pm 0.02 e^2/h$ and $0.58\pm 0.03 e^2/h$, respectively. In the 2nd lowest Landau band, a critical conductance $0.61\pm 0.03 e^2/h$ is obtained which indeed supports the notion of universality. However, these numbers are significantly at variance with the hitherto commonly believe…
We address the researchers studying the magneto-transport properties of unconventional systems such as bulk samples and new materials or those working in the soft quantum limit. We have developed a procedure for the analysis of experimental data, so as to increase the confidence level about the presence of quantum hall effect in these data. It is shown that irrespective of temperature, sample material and sign of the charge carriers, for both integer and fractional QHE's, an universal direct proportionality exists in the dimensionless variables B and R (defined in the text). This procedure doe…
The quantum Hall phase diagram of the half-filled bilayer system in the second Landau level is studied as a function of tunneling and layer separation using exact diagonalization. We make the striking prediction that bilayer structures would manifest two distinct branches of incompressible fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) corresponding to the Abelian 331 state (at moderate to low tunneling and large layer separation) and the non-Abelian Pfaffian state (at large tunneling and small layer separation). The observation of these two FQHE branches and the quantum phase transition between them w…
Inter-layer excitonic coherence in a quantum Hall bilayer with negligible tunneling is monitored by measurements of low-lying spin excitations. At $ν_T =1$ new quasiparticle excitations are observed above a transition temperature revealing a competing metallic phase. For magnetic fields above an onset Zeeman energy this metallic phase has full spin polarization. A phase diagram in the parameter space of temperature and Zeeman energy reveals that the transition temperature increases at higher fields. This unexpected result suggests intriguing impacts of spin polarization in the highly correlate…
We investigate torque and also conventionally defined spin-Hall currents in two-dimensional (2D) spin-orbit coupled systems of spin-1/2 particles within the linear response Kubo formalism. We obtain some interesting relations between the conventional and torque spin-Hall conductivities for the generic effective Hamiltonian $H_0=ε_k^0+A(k)σ_x-B(k)σ_y$, where $A(k)=η^A_ik_i+η^A_{ij}k_ik_j+η^A_{ijl}k_ik_jk_l+...$, $B(k)=η^B_ik_i+η^B_{ij}k_ik_j+η^B_{ijl}k_ik_jk_l+...$, and $η$'s are the specific system-dependent coefficients. Specifically, we find that in the intrinsic case the magnitude of torque…
Statistics of level spacing and magnetization are studied for the phase diagram of the integer quantum Hall effect in a 2D finite lattice model with Anderson disorder.
We report a theoretical investigation of quantized spin-Hall conductance fluctuation of graphene devices in the diffusive regime. Two graphene models that exhibit quantized spin-Hall effect (QSHE) are analyzed. Model-I is with unitary symmetry under an external magnetic field $B\ne 0$ but with zero spin-orbit interaction, $t_{SO}=0$. Model-II is with symplectic symmetry where B=0 but $t_{SO} \ne 0$. Extensive numerical calculations indicate that the two models have exactly the same universal QSHE conductance fluctuation value $0.285 e/4π$ regardless of the symmetry. Qualitatively different fro…
In the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, ABC-stacked trilayer graphene's chiral band structure supports a 12-fold degenerate N=0 Landau level (LL). Along with the valley and spin degrees of freedom, the zeroth LL contains additional quantum numbers associated with the LL orbital index $% n=0,1,2$. Remote inter-layer hopping terms and external potential difference $Δ_{B}$ between the layers lead to LL splitting by introducing a gap $% Δ_{LL}$ between the degenerate zero-energy triplet LL orbitals. Assuming that the spin and valley degrees of freedom are frozen, we study the phase diag…
In a GaAs/AlGaAs two-dimensional electron system with two occupied subbands, the experimentally determined phase diagram in the density-magnetic field plane exhibits rich topological features. Ring-like structures are observed at even integer filling factors, in the phase diagram. Even with the identical quantized Hall resistance values as those given rise by the ordinary integer quantum Hall effect due to the Landau level quantization; the activation energies of these states within the rings are much smaller. These ring structures cannot account for by the simple single particle picture. We a…
The microstructure and electrical transport of Cr$_x$(SiO$_2$)$_{1-x}$ nanogranular films with Cr volume faction $x$$\simeq$0.67 and 0.72 are systematically investigated. The transmission electron microscopy images and elemental mappings indicate that the films are quite inhomogeneous: some Cr granules directly connect to others while some Cr granules with size $\sim$1 to $\sim$3\,nm disperse in the SiO$_2$ dielectric matrix. For each film, the Hall coefficient $R_H$ varies linearly with the natural logarithm of temperature, i.e., $ΔR_H$$\propto$$\ln T$, above $\sim$60\,K, saturates at $\sim$6…
Utilizing the Baym-Kadanoff formalism with the polarization function calculated in the random phase approximation, the dynamics of the $ν=0$ quantum Hall state in bilayer graphene is analyzed. Two phases with nonzero energy gap, the ferromagnetic and layer asymmetric ones, are found. The phase diagram in the plane $(\tildeΔ_0,B)$, where $\tildeΔ_0$ is a top-bottom gates voltage imbalance, is described. It is shown that the energy gaps in these phases scale linearly, $ΔE\sim 10 B[T]K, with magnetic field. The comparison of these results with recent experiments in bilayer graphene is presented.
The hopping ac conductance, which is realized at the transverse conductance minima in the regime of the integer Hall effect, has been measured using a combination of acoustic and microwave methods. Measurements have been made in the p-GeSi/Ge/GeSi structures with quantum wells in a wide frequency range (30-1200 MHz). The experimental frequency dependences of the real part of ac conductance $σ_1$ have been interpreted on the basis of the model presuming hops between localized electronic states belonging to isolated clusters. At high frequencies, dominating clusters are pairs of close states; up…
