Exploiting the possibility of temporal variation of the winding number, we have prepared a SSH chain in its {\it stroboscopic} topological state, starting from the trivial one, by application of a periodic perturbation. The periodic driving, we employ here, is adiabatically switched on to break the particle-hole symmetry and generate a chiral mass term in the effective Floquet Hamiltonian; consequently the Floquet Hamiltonian also gets deformed without crossing the gapless quantum critical point. The particle hole symmetry is subsequently restored in the Floquet Hamiltonian by adiabatically switching off a part of the periodic potential. Thereafter, the Floquet Hamiltonian develops a symmetry protected non-trivial topological winding number. Furthermore, we also observe stroboscopic topologically protected localised edge states in a long open chain and show that a bulk boundary correspondence survives a unitary non-equilibrium situation in 1D BDI Hamiltonians. Moreover, considering an extended SSH chain with higher neighbour hoppings, we dynamically prepare the system in a stroboscopic out-of-equilibrium topological insulator state starting from a metallic regime. At the same time, we establish the dynamical preparation of higher winding phases in an extended SSH chain with stroboscopic bulk-boundary correspondence in the non-equilibrium state of the system.
The breakdown of the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence due to non-Hermitian skin effect leads to the non-Bloch bulk-boundary correspondence in the generalized Brillouin zone. Inspired by the case of the equivalence between the non-reciprocal hopping and imaginary gauge field, we propose a method to construct the topological equivalent models of the non-Hermitian dimerized lattices with the similarity transformations. The idea of the constructions is from that the imaginary magnetic flux vanishes under the open boundary condition and the period boundary spectra can be well approximated …
We study edge states in AB-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) ribbon where the Chern number of the corresponding two-dimensional (2D) bulk Hamiltonian is zero. The existence and topological features of edge states when two layers ended with the same or different edge terminations (zigzag, bearded, armchair) are discussed. The edge states (non-dispersive bands near the Fermi level) are states localized at the edge of graphene nanoribbon that only exists in certain range of momentum $k_y$. Their existence near the Fermi level are protected by the chiral symmetry with topology well described by coupl…
A remarkable feature of the trimer Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH3) model is that it supports localized edge states. Although Zak's phase remains quantized for the case of a mirror-symmetric chain, it is known that it fails to take integer values in the absence of this symmetry and thus it cannot play the role of a well-defined bulk invariant in the general case. Attempts to establish a bulk-edge correspondence have been made via Green's functions or through extensions to a synthetic dimension. Here we propose a simple alternative for SSH3, utilizing the previously introduced sublattice Zak's phase…
We use multi-band SSH models to demonstrate a prescription for calculating the correct Zak phase and winding number of multi-band systems. We verify our prescription by comparing the resultant winding number of a four-band SSH model with the edge states of a semi-infinite chain which we find by solving the equation of motion. We then also carry out an extensive comparison with the numerical results obtained by solving the matrix eigenvalue problem of finite chains with various number of sites. As a double check of our prescription, we also confirm the bulk edge correspondence in a six-band SSH…
Topological insulators are a new class of materials that have attracted significant attention in contemporary condensed matter physics. They are different from the regular insulators and they display novel quantum properties that also involve the idea of `topology', an area of mathematics. Some of the fundamental ideas behind the topological insulators, particularly in low-dimensional condensed matter systems such as poly-acetylene chains, can be understood using a simple one-dimensional toy model popularly known as the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model or the SSH model. This model can also be used a…
We generalize the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with the inclusion of arbitrary long-range hopping amplitudes, providing a simple framework to investigate arbitrary adiabatic deformations that preserve the chiral symmetry upon the bulk energy bands with any arbitrary winding numbers. Using only elementary techniques of solving linear difference equations and applying Cauchy's integral formula, we obtain a mathematically rigorous and physically transparent proof of the bulk-boundary correspondence for the generalized SSH model. The multiplicity of robust zero-energy edge modes is shown to be…

Bulk-edge correspondence is one of the most distinct properties of topological insulators. In particular, the 1D winding number $\n$ has a one-to-one correspondence to the number of edge states in a chain of topological insulators with boundaries. By properly choosing the unit cells, we carry out numerical calculation to show explicitly in the extended SSH model that the winding numbers corresponding to the left and right unit cells may be used to predict the numbers of edge states on the two boundaries in a finite chain. Moreover, by drawing analogy between the SSH model and QWZ model, we sho…
A modified periodic boundary condition adequate for non-hermitian topological systems is proposed. Under this boundary condition a topological number characterizing the system is defined in the same way as in the corresponding hermitian system and hence, at the cost of introducing an additional parameter that characterizes the non-hermitian skin effect, the idea of bulk-edge correspondence in the hermitian limit can be applied almost as it is. We develop this framework through the analysis of a non-hermitian SSH model with chiral symmetry, and prove the bulk-edge correspondence in a generalize…
Topological phonon polaritons (TPhPs) are highly protected and localized edge modes that are capable of achieving a strong confinement of electromagnetic waves and immune to impurities and disorder. Here we realize TPhPs by constructing one-dimensional dimerized silicon carbide nanoparticle chains, which mimic the topological property of the well-known Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. We analytically calculate the complex band structure of such chains by taking all near-field and far-field dipole-dipole interactions into account. For longitudinal modes, we demonstrate that, despite the non-He…
Here we present a flexible strategy to realize robust nanomaterials exhibiting valence electronic structures whose fundamental physics is described by the SSH-Hamiltonian. These solid-state materials are realized using atomically precise graphene nanoribbons (GNR). We demonstrate the controlled periodic coupling of topological boundary states at junctions of armchair GNRs of different widths to create quasi-1D trivial and non-trivial electronic quantum phases. Their topological class is experimentally determined by drawing upon the bulk-boundary correspondence and measuring the presence (non-t…
