The breakdown of the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence due to non-Hermitian skin effect leads to the non-Bloch bulk-boundary correspondence in the generalized Brillouin zone. Inspired by the case of the equivalence between the non-reciprocal hopping and imaginary gauge field, we propose a method to construct the topological equivalent models of the non-Hermitian dimerized lattices with the similarity transformations. The idea of the constructions is from that the imaginary magnetic flux vanishes under the open boundary condition and the period boundary spectra can be well approximated by open boundary spectra. As an illustration, we apply this approach to several representative non-Hermitian SSH models, efficiently obtaining topological invariants in analytic form defined in the conventional Bloch bands. The method gives an alternative way to study the topological properties of non-Hermitian system.
In this paper, we study the topological properties of the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) lattice by periodically introducing onsite imaginary potentials in the manner of ($iγ_1$, $-iγ_2$, $-iγ_1$, $iγ_2$) where $γ_1$ and $γ_2$ are the imaginary potential strengths. Results show that by changing the lattice to a tetramerized non-Hermitian system, such imaginary potentials induce the nontrivial transition of the topological properties of the SSH system. First, the topologically-nontrivial region is extended, followed by the non-Hermitian spontaneous breaking of the anti-$\cal PT$ symme…
We propose an anti-parity-time (anti-PT ) symmetric non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, where the large non-Hermiticity constructively creates nontrivial topology and greatly expands the topological phase. In the anti-PT -symmetric SSH model, the gain and loss are alternatively arranged in pairs under the inversion symmetry. The appearance of degenerate point at the center of the Brillouin zone determines the topological phase transition, while the exceptional points unaffect the band topology. The large non-Hermiticity leads to unbalanced wavefunction distribution in the broken an…
The balance of gain and loss in an open system may maintain certain Hermitian dynamical behaviors, which can be hardly observed in a popular Hermitian system. In this paper, we systematically study a 1D PT -symmetry non-Hermitian SSH model with open boundary condition based on exact approximate solution. We show that the long-wave length standing-wave modes can be achieved within the linear dispersion region when the system is tuned at the exceptional point (EP). The whole Hilbert space can be decomposed into two quasi-Hermitian subspaces, which are consisted of positive and negative energy le…
The competition between staggered imaginary potentials and lattice dimerization results in a unidirectional propagating coalescing state of a non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) ring at an exceptional point. A segment of the SSH ring inherits the unidirectional feature and exhibits some intriguing dynamic behaviors when it is embedded in a Hermitian chain as a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric scattering center. Based on the Bethe ansatz scattering solution for the interface between Hermitian and non-Hermitian regions, we show that the SSH scattering center supports the following wave-packet dynam…
We propose an application of a parity-time symmetric non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model by embedded it in a two-dimensional square lattice tube. The coalescence state at the exceptional point of non-Hermitian SSH model is chiral and selectively controls helical transport and amplification. Two typical helicity-dependent scattering dynamics are observed. If the incidence has an identical helicity with the embedded non-Hermitian SSH model, we observe a perfect transmission without reflection. However, if the incidence has an opposite helicity with the embedded non-Hermitian SSH model…
The present work addresses the distinction between the topological properties of PT symmetric and non-PT symmetric scenarios for the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. The non-PT symmetric case is represented by non-reciprocity in both the inter- and the intra-cell hopping amplitudes, while the one with PT symmetry is modeled by a complex on-site staggered potential. In particular, we study the loci of the exceptional points, the winding numbers, band structures, and explore the breakdown of bulk-boundary correspondence (BBC). We further study the interplay of the dimerization str…
Topological edge states appear at the interface of topologically distinct two Hermitian insulators. We study the extension of this idea to non-Hermitian systems. We consider PT symmetric and topologically distinct non-Hermitian insulators with real spectra and study topological edge states at the interface of them. We show that PT symmetry is spontaneously broken at the interface during the topological phase transition. Therefore topological edge states with complex energy eigenvalues appear at the interface. We apply our idea to a complex extension of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model.
Non-Hermitian systems exhibit many peculiar dynamic behaviors which never showed up in Hermitian systems. The existence of spectral singularity (SS) for a non-Hermitian scattering center provides a lasing mechanism in the context of quantum mechanics. In this paper we show exactly that a finite system at exceptional point (EP) can also provide an alternative laser solution. We investigate the dynamics of non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model around EP, based on the analysis of parity-time (PT ) and chiral-time (CT ) symmetries of the Hamiltonian. In contrast to the SS lasing mechanism…
A non-Hermitian topological insulator with real spectrum is interesting in the theory of non-Hermitian extension of topological systems. We find an experimentally realizable example of a two dimensional non-Hermitian topological insulator with real spectrum. We consider two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with gain and loss. We introduce non-Hermitian polarization vector to explore topological phase and show that topological edge states in the band gap exist in the system.
We consider periodically modulated Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with gain and loss. This model, which can be realized with current technology in photonics using waveguides, allows us to study Floquet topological insulating phase. By using Floquet theory, we find the quasi-energy spectrum of this one dimensional PT symmetric topological insulator. We show that stable Floquet topological phase exists in our model provided that oscillation frequency is large and the non-Hermitian degree is below than a critical value.
Non-Hermitian systems exhibiting topological properties are attracting growing interest. In this work, we propose an algorithm for solving the ground state of a non-Hermitian system in the matrix product state (MPS) formalism based on a companion Hermitian Hamiltonian. If the eigenvalues of the non-Hermitian system are known, the companion Hermitian Hamiltonian can be directly constructed and solved using Hermitian variational methods. When the eigenvalues are unknown, a gradient descent along with the companion Hermitian Hamiltonian yields both the ground state eigenenergy and the eigenstate.…
We propose a method of computing and studying entanglement quantities in non-Hermitian systems by use of a biorthogonal basis. We find that the entanglement spectrum characterizes the topological properties in terms of the existence of mid-gap states in the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with parity and time-reversal symmetry (PT symmetry) and the non-Hermitian Chern insulators. In addition, we find that at a critical point in the PT symmetric SSH model, the entanglement entropy has a logarithmic scaling with corresponding central charge $c=-2$. This critical point then is a fr…
Non-Hermitian systems with $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry can possess purely real eigenvalue spectra. In this work two one-dimensional systems with two different topological phases, the topological nontrivial Phase (TNP) and the topological trivial phase (TTP) combined with $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric non-Hermitian potentials are investigated. The models of choice are the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model and the Kitaev chain. The interplay of a spontaneous $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking due to gain and loss with the topological phase is different for the two models. The SSH model undergoes a $\mathcal…
We study the dynamical behavior of a non-Hermitian moire superlattice system, which consists of two-coupled SSH chains with staggered imaginary on-site potentials. There are two main spatial regions, in which systems are in unbroken symmetric phases with fully real spectrum, appearing periodically along the ladder. We show that the two quantum phases are dimerized and tetramerized, which determine the distinct dynamical behaviors. Dirac probability can oscillate periodically, increase quadratically and increase exponentially, which correspond to the unbroken phase, exceptional point and the br…
We study the formation of band gap bound states induced by a non-Hermitian impurity embedded in a Hermitian system. We show that a pair of bound states emerges inside the band gap when a parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) imaginary potential is added in a strongly coupled bilayer lattices and the bound states become strongly localized when the system approaches to the exceptional point (EP). As a direct consequence of such $\mathcal{PT}$ impurity-induced bound states, an impurity array can be constructed and protected by energy gap. The effective Hamiltonian of the impurity array is non-Hermitian Su…
We study the parity- and time-reversal PT symmetric non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with two conjugated imaginary potentials $\pm iγ$ at two end sites. The SSH model is known as one of the simplest two-band topological models which has topologically trivial and nontrivial phases. We find that the non-Hermitian terms can lead to different effects on the properties of the eigenvalues spectrum in topologically trivial and nontrivial phases. In the topologically trivial phase, the system undergos an abrupt transition from unbroken PT-symmetry region to spontaneously broken $\mathcal…
Unlike a Chern number in $2$D and $3$D topological system, Zak phase takes a subtle role to characterize the topological phase in $1$D. On the one hand, it is not a gauge invariant, on the other hand, the Zak phase difference between two quantum phases can be used to identify the topological phase transitions. A non-Hermitian system may inherit some characters of a Hermitian system, such as entirely real spectrum, unitary evolution, topological energy band, etc. In this paper, we study the influence of non-Hermitian term on the Zak phase for a class of non-Hermitian systems. We show exactly th…
We study coupled non-Hermitian Rice-Mele chains, which consist of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain system with staggered on-site imaginary potentials. In two dimensional (2D) thermodynamic limit, the exceptional points (EPs) are shown to exhibit topological feature: EPs correspond to topological defects of a real auxiliary 2D vector field in k space, which is obtained from the Bloch states of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. As a topological invariant, the topological charges of EPs can be $\pm$1/2, obtained by the winding number calculation. Remarkably, we find that such a topological character…
Eigenstates exhibit localization at an open edge in a non-Hermitian lattice due to non-Hermitian skin effect. We here explore another interesting feature of non-Hermitian skin effect and predict quasi-stationary solutions, which are approximately time-independent. We show that the transition from such states to eigenstates is dramatically non-perturbative. We discuss that mathematically extending the boundary of a long non-Hermitian lattice to infinity can lead to nontrivial solution. We consider a non-Hermitian variant of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model and predict non-topological but ro…
We extend non-Hermitian topological quantum walks on a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) lattice [M. S. Rudner and L. Levitov, Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 065703 (2009)] to the case of non-Markovian evolution. This non-Markovian model is established by coupling each unit cell in the SSH lattice to a reservoir formed by a quasi-continuum of levels. We find a topological transition in this model even in the case of non-Markovian evolution, where the walker may visit the reservoir and return to the SSH lattice at a later time. The existence of a topological transition does, however, depend on the low-frequenc…
Non-Hermitian topological phases exhibit a number of exotic features that have no Hermitian counterparts, including the skin effect and breakdown of the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence. Here, we implement the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) Hamiltonian, which is a prototypical model for studying non-Hermitian topological phases, with a solid-state quantum simulator consisting of an electron spin and a $^{13}$C nuclear spin in a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in a diamond. By employing a dilation method, we realize the desired non-unitary dynamics for the electron spin and map …
By introducing the next-nearest-neighboring (NNN) intersite coupling, we investigate the eigenenergies of the $\cal PT$-symmetric non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with two conjugated imaginary potentials at the end sites. It is found that with the strengthening of NNN coupling, the particle-hole symmetry is destroyed. As a result, the bonding band is first narrowed and then undergoes the top-bottom reversal followed by the its width's increase, whereas the antibonding band is widened monotonously. In this process, the topological state extends into the topologically-trivial regio…
We propose an resistors, inductors and capacitors (RLC) electrical circuit to theoretically analyze and fully simulate a new type of non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with complex hoppings. We formulate its construction and investigate its properties by taking advantage of the circuit's versatility. Rich physical properties can be identified in this system from the normal modes of oscillation of the RLC circuit, including the highly tunable bulk-edge correspondence between topological winding numbers and edge states and the non-Hermitian skin phenomenon originating from a novel co…
A striking feature of non-Hermitian tight-binding Hamiltonians is the high sensitivity of both spectrum and eigenstates to boundary conditions. Indeed, if the spectrum under periodic boundary conditions is point gapped, by opening the lattice the non-Hermitian skin effect will necessarily occur. Finding the exact skin eigenstates may be demanding in general, and many methods in the literature are based on ansatzes and on recurrence equations for the eigenstates' components. Here we devise a general procedure based on the Green's function method to calculate the eigenstates of non-Hermitian tig…
In the context of two particularly interesting non-Hermitian models in quantum mechanics we explore the relationship between the original Hamiltonian H and its Hermitian counterpart h, obtained from H by a similarity transformation, as pointed out by Mostafazadeh. In the first model, due to Swanson, h turns out to be just a scaled harmonic oscillator, which explains the form of its spectrum. However, the transformation is not unique, which also means that the observables of the original theory are not uniquely determined by H alone. The second model we consider is the original PT-invariant Ham…
Exceptional points are interesting physical phenomena in non-Hermitian physics at which the eigenvalues are degenerate and the eigenvectors coalesce. In this paper, we find that the universal feature of arbitrary non-Hermitian two level systems with singularities is basis defectiveness rather than energy degeneracy or state coalescence. This leads to the discovery of general exceptional points (GEPs). For GEPs, more subtle structures (e.g., Bloch peach), additional classification, and' 'hidden" quantum phase transitions are explored. By using the topologically protected subspace from two edge …
