The effect of nuclear deformation on the isoscalar toroidal and compression dipole modes in prolate $^{170}$Yb is studied in the framework of the random-phase-approximation method with a representative set of Skyrme forces (SV-bas, SLy6, SkM$^*$ and SkI3). It is shown that the deformation crucially redistributes the strength of both modes. The compression mode has the same sequence of $μ$=0 and 1 branches as the isovector giant dipole resonance where for prolate nuclei the $μ=0$ mode is lower in energy ($μ$ being the projection of the axial momentum of the mode). Instead, the toroidal mode exhibits an anomalous (opposite) sequence where the $μ$=1 branch precedes the $μ$=0 one.
A finite rank separable approximation for the particle-hole RPA calculations with Skyrme interactions is extended to take into account the pairing. As an illustration of the method energies and transition probabilities for the quadrupole and octupole excitations in some O, Ar, Sn and Pb isotopes are calculated. The values obtained within our approach are very close to those that were calculated within QRPA with the full Skyrme interaction. They are in reasonable agreement with experimental data.
A finite rank separable approximation for the quasiparticle RPA with Skyrme interactions is applied to study the low lying quadrupole and octupole states in some S isotopes and giant resonances in some spherical nuclei. It is shown that characteristics calculated within the suggested approach are in a good agreement with available experimental data.
Neutrino emission and their transport of energy to the supernova shock region are sensitive to the physics of hot and dense nuclear matter, which is a complex problem due to the strong correlations induced by nuclear forces. We derive charged-current opacities for electron neutrinos and antineutrinos in supernova matter using a self-consistent approach based on the Skyrme effective interaction. We include a mean field energy shift due to nuclear interaction and corrections due to RPA correlations. A complete treatment of the full Skyrme interaction, including a spin-orbit term, is given. To te…
We discuss major differences between electric and magnetic excitations in nuclei appearing in self-consistent calculation based on Skyrme energy-density functionals. Tools of analysis are Landau-Migdal parameters for bulk properties and RPA for resonance modes of $^{208}$Pb as representative of finite nuclei. We show that the relation between the effective mass and the effective particle-hole interaction, well known in the Landau-Migdal theory, explains the success of self-consistent calculations of electric transitions in such approaches. This effect, however, does not automatically exist in …
Second RPA calculations with a Skyrme force are performed to describe both high- and low-lying excited states in $^{16}$O. The coupling between 1 particle-1 hole and 2 particle-2 hole as well as that between 2 particle-2 hole configurations among themselves are fully taken into account and the residual interaction is never neglected, not resorting therefore to a generally used approximate scheme where only the first kind of coupling is considered. The issue of the rearrangement terms in the matrix elements beyond standard RPA is addressed and discussed. As a general feature of second RPA resul…
The self-consistent separable RPA (random phase approximation) method is formulated for Skyrme forces with pairing. The method is based on a general self-consistent procedure for factorization of the two-body interaction. It is relevant for various density- and current-dependent functionals. The contributions of the time-even and time-odd Skyrme terms as well as of the Coulomb and pairing terms to the residual interaction are taken self-consistently into account. Most of the expression have a transparent analytical form, which makes the method convenient for the treatment and analysis. The sep…
We formulate the self-consistent separable random-phase-approximation (SRPA) method and specify it for Skyrme forces with pairing for the case of axially symmetric deformed nuclei. The factorization of the residual interaction allows to avoid diagonalization of high-rank RPA matrices, which dramatically reduces the computational expense. This advantage is crucial for the systems with a huge configuration space, first of all for deformed nuclei. SRPA takes self-consistently into account the contributions of both time-even and time-odd Skyrme terms as well as of the Coulomb force and pairing. Th…
Two basic concepts of nuclear vorticity, hydrodynamical (HD) and Rawenthall-Wambach (RW), are critically inspected. As a test case, we consider the interplay of irrotational and vortical motion in isoscalar electric dipole E1(T=0) modes in $^{208}$Pb, namely the toroidal and compression modes. The modes are described in a self-consistent random-phase-approximation (RPA) with the Skyrme force SLy6. They are examined in terms of strength functions, transition densities, current fields, and formfactors. It is shown that the RW conception (suggesting the upper component of the nuclear current as t…
The spin-flip M1 giant resonance is explored in the framework of Random Phase Approximation on the basis of the Skyrme energy functional. A representative set of eight Skyrme parameterizations (SkT6, SkM*, SLy6, SG2, SkO, SkO', SkI4, and SV-bas) is used. Light and heavy, spherical and deformed nuclei ($^{48}$Ca, $^{158}$Gd, $^{208}$Pb, and $^{238}$U) are considered. The calculations show that spin densities play a crucial role in forming the collective shift in the spectrum. The interplay of the collective shift and spin-orbit splitting determines the quality of the description. None of the co…
The contribution of Lambda hyperons to neutrino scattering rates is calculated in the random phase approximation in a model where the interaction is described by a Skyrme potential. Finite temperature and neutrino trapping are taken into account in view of applications to the deleptonization stage of protoneutron star cooling. The hyperons can remove the problem of ferromagnetic instability common to (nearly) all Skyrme parametrizations of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. As a consequence, there is not any longer a pole at the transition in the neutrino-baryon cross section. However there stil…
The E1(T=1) isovector dipole giant resonance (GDR) in heavy and super-heavy deformed nuclei is analyzed over a sample of 18 rare-earth nuclei, 4 actinides and three chains of super-heavy elements (Z=102, 114 and 120). Basis of the description is self-consistent separable RPA (SRPA) using the Skyrme force SLy6. The self-consistent model well reproduces the experimental data (energies and widths) in the rare-earth and actinide region. The trend of the resonance peak energies follows the estimates from collective models, showing a bias to the volume mode for the rare-earths isotopes and a mix of …
Using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) self-consistent mean-field theory with the SkM* Skyrme energy-density functional, we study nuclear structure properties of even-even superheavy nuclei (SHN) of $Z=120$ isotopes and $N=184$ isotones. The shape of the nucleus along the lowest energy curve as a function of the quadrupole moment $Q_{20}$ makes a sudden transition from the oblate spheroids (biconcave discs) to the toroidal shapes, in the region of large oblate quadrupole moments.
Within the self-consistent constraint Skyrme-Hartree-Fock+BCS model (SHF+BCS), we found equilibrium toroidal nuclear density distributions in the region of super-heavy elements. For nuclei with a sufficient oblate deformation ($Q_{20}\leq$ -200 b), it becomes energetically favourable to change the genus of nuclear surface from 0 to 1, i.e., to switch the shape from a biconcave disc to a torus. The energy of the toroidal (genus=1) SHF+BCS solution relative to the compact (genus=0) ground state energy is strongly dependent both on the atomic number Z and the mass number A. We discuss the region …
A comparative analysis of toroidal, compressional and vortical dipole strengths in the spherical $^{144}$Sm and the deformed $^{154}$Sm is performed within the random-phase-approximation using a set of different Skyrme forces. Isoscalar (T=0), isovector (T=1), and electromagnetic excitation channels are considered. The role of the nuclear convection $j_{\text{con}}$ and magnetization $j_{\text{mag}}$ currents is inspected. It is shown that the deformation leads to an appreciable redistribution of the strengths and causes a spectacular deformation splitting (exceeding 5 MeV) of the isoscalar co…
A short review on the self-consistent RPA based on a energy-density functional of the Skyrme type is given. We also present an extension of the RPA where the coupling of phonons to the single-particle states is considered. Within this approach we present numerical results which are compared with data. The self-consistent approach is compared with the Landau-Migdal theory. Here we derive from the self-consistent $ph$ interaction, the Landau-Migdal parameters as well as their density dependence. In the Appendix a new derivation of the reduced matrix elements of the $ph$ interaction is presented.
Low-energy E1 strength in neutron-rich $^{132-164}$Sn isotopes is analyzed in the framework of the Skyrme random phase approximation (RPA) with different Skyrme forces. A double folding procedure is applied to take into account the energy-dependent width effects beyond RPA. All the considered Skyrme forces indicate a soft prolate deformation in the open shell isotopes $^{142-164}$Sn. The integrated E1 strength in the energy region of the pygmy resonance grows with the neutron number. The influence of deformation on the integrated strength near the particle emission thresholds (which is of a ke…
The finite amplitude method (FAM), which we have recently proposed (T. Nakatsukasa, T. Inakura, and K. Yabana, Phys. Rev. C 76, 024318 (2007)), simplifies significantly the fully self-consistent RPA calculation. Employing the FAM, we are conducting systematic, fully self-consistent response calculations for a wide mass region. This paper is intended to present a computational scheme to be used in the systematic investigation and to show the performance of the FAM for a realistic Skyrme energy functional. We implemented the method in the mixed representation in which the forward and backward RP…
The isoscalar giant monopole resonances (ISGMR) and giant dipole resonances (ISGDR) in medium-heavy nuclei are investigated in the framework of HF+RPA and HF-BCS+QRPA with Skyrme effective interactions. It is found that pairing has little effect on these modes. It is also found that the coupling of the RPA states to 2p-2h configurations results in about (or less than) 1 MeV shifts of the resonance energies and at the same time gives the correct total widths. For the ISGMR, comparison with recent data leads to a value of nuclear matter compression modulus close to 215 MeV. However, a discrepanc…
A possible relation of the low-lying E1 (pygmy resonance) and toroidal strengths is analyzed by using Skyrme-RPA results for the strength functions, transition densities and current fields in $^{208}$Pb. It is shown that the irrotational pygmy motion can appear as a local manifestation of the collective vortical toroidal dipole resonance (TDR) at the nuclear surface. The RPA results are compared to unperturbed (1ph) ones.
We study the nuclear properties of even-even superheavy $Z$=120 isotopes and $N$=184 isotones with the Skyrme Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB)approach. Within this model we examine the deformation energy surfaces and two paths to fission: a reflection-symmetric path with elongated fission fragments (sEF) and a reflection-asymmetric path corresponding to elongated fission fragments (aEF). Furthermore, we explore the energy surfaces in the region of very large oblate deformations with toroidal nuclear density distributions. While the energy surfaces of toroidal $Z$=120 isotopes and $N$=184 isotones…
Strongly deformed oblate superheavy nuclei form an intriguing region where the toroidal nuclear structures may bifurcate from the oblate spheroidal shape. The bifurcation may be facilitated when the nucleus is endowed with a large angular moment about the symmetry axis with $I=I_{z}$. The toroidal high-$K$ isomeric states at their local energy minima can be theoretically predicted using the cranked self-consistent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock method. We use the cranked Skyrme-Hartree-Fock method to predict the properties of the toroidal high-spin isomers in the superheavy nucleus $^{304}{120}_{184}$.
The effects of a zero-range tensor component of the effective interaction on nuclear response functions are determined in the so-called RPA approach. Explicit formula in the case of symmetric homogeneous isotropic nuclear matter are given for each spin-isospin excitation channel. It is shown for a typical interaction with tensor couplings that the effects are quantitatively important, mainly in vector channels.
A finite rank separable approximation for the quasiparticle RPA calculations with Skyrme interactions that was proposed in our previous work is extended to take into account the coupling between one- and two-phonon terms in the wave functions of excited states. It is shown that characteristics calculated within the suggested approach are in a good agreement with available experimental data.
We provide for the first time accurate assessments of the consequences of violations of self-consistency in the Hartree-Fock based random phase approximation (RPA) as commonly used to calculate the energy $E_c$ of the nuclear breathing mode. Using several Skyrme interactions we find that the self-consistency violated by ignoring the spin-orbit interaction in the RPA calculation causes a spurious enhancement of the breathing mode energy for spin unsaturated systems. Contrarily, neglecting the Coulomb interaction in the RPA or performing the RPA calculations in the TJ scheme underestimates the b…
The isoscalar giant monopole resonance (GMR) in Samarium isotopes (from spherical $^{144}$Sm to deformed $^{148-154}$Sm) is investigated within the Skyrme random-phase-approximation (RPA) for a variety of Skyrme forces. The exact RPA and its separable version (SRPA) are used for spherical and deformed nuclei, respectively. The quadrupole deformation is shown to yield two effects: the GMR broadens and attains a two-peak structure due to the coupling with the quadrupole giant resonance.
Gamow-Teller (GT) and spin-dipole (SD) strength distributions of four doubly magic nuclei $^{48}$Ca, $^{90}$Zr, $^{132}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb are studied by the self-consistent Hartree-Fock plus random phase approximation (RPA) method. The Skyrme forces SAMi and SAMi-T without/with tensor interactions are adopted in our calculations. The calculated strengths are compared with available experimental data. The RPA results of GT and SD strengths of all four nuclei show fine agreement with observed GT and SD resonances in energy. A small GT peak below the main GT resonance is better described by the S…
The magnetic dipole (M1) and the Gamow-Teller (GT) excitations of finite nuclei have been studied in a fully self-consistent Hartree-Fock (HF) plus random phase approximation (RPA) approach by using a Skyrme energy density functional with spin and spin-isospin densities. To this end, we adopt the extended SLy5st interaction which includes spin-density dependent terms and stabilize nuclear matter with respect to spin instabilities. The effect of the spin-density dependent terms is examined in both the mean field and the spin-flip excited state calculations. The numerical results show that those…
The breathing-mode giant monopole resonance (GMR) is studied within the framework of the relativistic mean-field theory using the Generator Coordinate Method (GCM). The constrained incompressibility and the excitation energy of isoscalar giant monopole states are obtained for finite nuclei with various sets of Lagrangian parameters. A comparison is made with the results of nonrelativistic constrained Skyrme Hartree-Fock calculations and with those from Skyrme RPA calculations. In the RMF theory the GCM calculations give a transition density for the breathing mode, which resembles much that obt…
The low-energy dipole excitations in $^{24}$Mg are investigated within the Skyrme quasiparticle random-phase-approximation (QRPA) for axial nuclei. The calculations with the force SLy6 reveal a remarkable feature: the lowest $I^πK=1^-1$ excitation (E = 7.92 MeV) in $^{24}$Mg is a vortical toroidal state (TS) representing a specific vortex-antivortex realization of well-known spherical Hill's vortex in a strongly deformed axial confinement. This is a striking example of an {\it individual} TS which can be much easier discriminated in experiment than the toroidal dipole resonance embracing many …
By means of the mixed representation RPA based on the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock mean field, we investigate low-frequency octupole excitations built on the superdeformed (SD) states in the N=Z nuclei around 40Ca and the neutron-rich Sulfur isotopes. The RPA calculation is carried out fully self-consistently on the three-dimensional Cartesian mesh in a box, and yields a number of low-frequency octupole vibrations built on the SD states in 32S, 36Ar, 40Ca and 44Ti. In particular, a strongly collective K^π=1^- octupole vibration is suggested to appear on top of the SD state in 40Ca. For 48,50S close to …
Density functional theory is a preferred microscopic method for calculation of nuclear properties over the whole nuclear chart. Besides ground-state properties, which are calculated by Hartree-Fock theory, nuclear excitations can be described by means of Random Phase Approximation (RPA). The main objective of the present work is to give Skyrme RPA formalism for spherically symmetric nuclei, using the techniques of angular-momentum coupling. Various auxiliary topics, such as Hartree-Fock theory, Coulomb integral, center-of-mass corrections and pairing, are treated as well. RPA method is derived…
In the present contribution, we discuss the behavior of Skyrme forces when they are employed to study both neutron stars and giant resonance states in 208Pb within the fully self-consistent Random Phase Approximation (RPA). We point out that clear correlations exist between the results for the isoscalar monopole and isovector dipole resonances (ISGMR and IVGDR), and definite quantities which characterize the equation of state (EOS) of uniform matter. We propose that the RPA results or, to some extent, the mentioned EOS parameters, are used as constraints when a force is fitted. This suggestion…
The tensor terms of the Skyrme effective interaction are included in the self-consistent Hartree-Fock plus Random Phase Approximation (HF+RPA) model. The Gamow-Teller (GT) strength function of 90Zr and 208Pb are calculated with and without the tensor terms. The main peaks are moved downwards by about 2 MeV when including the tensor contribution. About 10% of the non-energy weighted sum rule is shifted to the excitation energy region above 30 MeV by the RPA tensor correlations. The contribution of the tensor terms to the energy weighted sum rule is given analytically, and compared to the outcom…
Individual low-energy E1 toroidal and compressional states (TS and CS) produced by the convective nuclear current ${\bf j}_{\rm c}$ were recently predicted for $^{24}$Mg in the framework of quasiparticle random-phase-approximation (QRPA) with Skyrme forces. In the present QRPA study with Skyrme parametrization SLy6, we explore in more detail properties of these states (toroidal and compressional responses, current distributions, and transitions probabilities $B(E1K, 0^+0 \to 1^-K),\; B(E3K, 0^+0 \to 3^-K)$, $B(M2K, 0^+0 \to 2^-K)$ with $K=$0 and 1) and analyze the possibility to discriminate a…
Isoscalar dipole strength distributions in spherical medium- and heavy-mass nuclei are calculated within random phase approximation (RPA) or quasiparticle RPA. Different Skyrme-type interactions corresponding to incompressibilities in the range 200 - 250 MeV are used. The results are discussed in comparison with existing data on isoscalar giant dipole resonances. Two main issues are raised, firstly the calculated giant resonance energies are somewhat higher than the observed ones, and secondly a sizable fraction of strength is predicted below 20 MeV which needs to be experimentally confirmed.
We study the effect of tensor correlations on single-particle and collective states within Skyrme Hartree-Fock and RPA model. Firstly, We study the role of tensor interactions in Skyrme effective interaction on the spin-orbit splittings of N=82 isotones and Z=50 isotope. The isospin dependence of the shell structure is well described as the results of the tensor interactions without destroying good properties of the binding energy and the rms charge radii of the heavy nuclei. Secondly, We performed self-consistent HF+RPA calculations for charge exchange 1$^+$ states in $^{90}$Zr and $^{208}$Pb…
We investigate effects of pairing and of quadrupole deformation on two sorts of nuclear excitations,$γ$-vibrational $K^π=2^+$ states and dipole resonances (isovector dipole, pygmy, compression, toroidal). The analysis is performed within the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) based on the Skyrme energy functional using the Skyrme parametrization SLy6. Particular attention is paid to i) the role of the particle-particle (pp) channel in the residual interaction of QRPA, ii) comparison of volume pairing (VP) and surface pairing (SP), iii) peculiarities of deformation splitting in the…
Electron scattering is a tool that can provide relatively clean view of the nuclear structure in both ground and excited states, as it depends on the well-known electromagnetic interaction. But since the common expressions for its cross section were derived with certain assumptions, in this paper we describe several nontrivial steps necessary for a proper theoretical calculation within the current density-functional framework, namely with Skyrme QRPA for axial nuclei, with aim to enable comparison of the theoretically predicted low-lying $1^-$ toroidal modes with future (e,e') experiments.
We study the properties of $^{74}$Kr, and particularly the Gamow Teller strength distribution, using a deformed selfconsistent HF+RPA method with Skyrme type interactions. Results are presented for two density-dependent effective two-body interactions, including the dependence on deformation of the HF energy that exhibits two minima at close energies and distant deformations, one prolate and one oblate. We study the role of deformation, residual interaction, pairing and RPA correlations on the Gamow Teller strength distribution. Results on moments of inertia and gyromagnetic factors, as well a…
Using the Hartree-Fock plus random-phase-approximation (HF+RPA), we study the impurity effect of $Λ$ hyperon on the collective vibrational excitations of double-$Λ$ hypernuclei. To this end, we employ a Skyrme-type $ΛN$ and $ΛΛ$ interactions for the HF calculations, and the residual interactions for RPA derived with the same interactions. We find that inclusion of two $Λ$ hyperons in $^{16}$O shifts the energy of the collective states towards higher energies. In particular, the energy of the giant monopole resonance of $^{\,\,18}_{ΛΛ}$O, as well as that of $^{210}_{ΛΛ}$Pb, becomes larger. This…
The finite amplitude method (FAM) is a very efficient approach for solving the fully self-consistent random-phase approximation (RPA) equations. We use FAM to rederive the RPA matrices for general Skyrme-like functionals, calculate the electric dipole (E1) and the magnetic dipole (M1) giant resonances, and compare the results with available experimental and evaluated data. For the E1 transitions in heavy nuclei, the calculations reproduce well the resonance energy of the photoabsorption cross sections. In the case of M1 transitions, we show that the residual interaction does not affect the tra…
The toroidal, compression and vortical dipole strength functions in semi-magic $^{124}$Sn (and partly in doubly-magic $^{100,132}$Sn) are analyzed within the random-phase-approximation method with the SkT6, SkI3, SLy6, SV-bas, and SkM* Skyrme forces. The isoscalar (T=0), isovector (T=1), and electromagnetic ('elm') channels are considered. Both convection $j_c$ and magnetization $j_m$ nuclear currents are taken into account. The calculations basically confirm the previous results obtained for $^{208}$Pb with the force SLy6. In particular, it is shown that the vortical and toroidal strengths ar…
Charge exchange spin-dipole (SD) excitations of $^{90}$Zr and $^{208}$Pb are studied by using a Skyrme Hartree-Fock(HF) + Random Phase approximation (RPA). The calculated spin-dipole strength distributions are compared with experimental data obtained by $^{90}$Zr (p,n) $^{90}$Nb and $^{90}$Zr (n,p) $^{90}$ Nb reactions. The model-independent SD sum rule values of various Skyrme interactions are studied in comparison with the experimental values in order to determine the neutron skin thickness of $^{90}$Zr. The pressure of the neutron matter equation of state (EOS) and the nuclear matter symmet…
The existence of individual low-energy E1 toroidal and compression states (TS and CS) in $^{24}$Mg was predicted recently in the framework of quasiparticle random-phase-approximation (QRPA) model with Skyrme forces. It was shown that the strong axial deformation of $^{24}$Mg is crucial to downshift the toroidal strength to the low-energy region and thus make the TS the lowest E1(K=1) dipole state. In this study, we explain this result by simple mean-field arguments. Comparing TS in two strongly axial nuclei, $^{24}$Mg and $^{20}$Ne, we show that the lowest TS is not not a universal phenomenon …
The isospin character, the collective or single-particle nature, and the sensitivity to the slope of the nuclear symmetry energy of the low-energy isovector dipole response (known as pygmy dipole resonance) are nowadays under debate. In the present work we study, within the fully self-consistent non-relativistic mean field (MF) approach based on Skyrme Hartree-Fock plus Random Phase Approximation (RPA), the measured even-even nuclei ${}^{68}$Ni, ${}^{132}$Sn and ${}^{208}$Pb. To analyze the model dependence in the predictions of the pygmy dipole strength, we employ three different Skyrme param…
We analyze the relation between isoscalar toroidal modes and so-called pygmy dipole resonance (PDR) which both appear in the same region of low-energy dipole excitations. To this end, we use a theoretical description within the fully self-consistent Skyrme quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA). Test cases are spherical nuclei $^{40,48}$Ca, $^{58,72}$Ni, $^{90,100}$Zr, and $^{100,120,132}$Sn which cover four different elements and for each element at least two isotopes with different neutron excess, one small and another large. The structure of the modes is investigated in terms of st…
We make use of a subtraction procedure, introduced to overcome double--counting problems in beyond--mean--field theories, in the second random--phase--approximation (SRPA) for the first time. This procedure guarantees the stability of SRPA (so that all excitation energies are real). We show that the method fits perfectly into nuclear density--functional theory. We illustrate applications to the monopole and quadrupole response and to low--lying $0^+$ and $2^+$ states in the nucleus $^{16}$O. We show that the subtraction procedure leads to: (i) results that are weakly cutoff dependent; (ii) a c…
The dipole excitations for calcium and zirconium isotopes are studied within the fully self-consistent Hartree-Fock mean field incorporated with the renormalized random-phase approximation (RRPA) using the Skyrme interaction SLy5. The RRPA takes into account the effect of ground-state correlations beyond RPA owing to the Pauli principle between the particle-hole pairs that form the RPA excitations as well as the correlations due to the particle-particle and hole-hole transitions, whose effects are treated here in an effective way. By comparing the RPA results with the RRPA ones, which are obta…
Starting from an effective Skyrme interaction we present a method to take into account the coupling between one- and two-phonon terms in the wave functions of excited states. The approach is a development of a finite rank separable approximation for the quasiparticle RPA calculations proposed in our previous work. The influence of the phonon-phonon coupling on energies and transition probabilities for the low-lying quadrupole and octupole states in the neutron-rich Sn isotopes is studied.
The nature of E1 low-energy strength (LES), often denoted as a "pygmy dipole resonance", is analyzed within the random-phase-approximation (RPA) in $^{208}$Pb using Skyrme forces in fully self-consistent manner. A first overview is given by the strength functions for the dipole, compressional and toroidal operators. More detailed insight is gained by averaged transition densities and currents where the latter provide very illustrative flow pattern. The analysis reveals clear isoscalar toroidal flow in the low-energy bin 6.0-8.8 MeV of the LES and a mixed isoscalar/isovector toroidal/compressio…
We study the nature of the low-lying dipole strength in neutron-rich nuclei, often associated to the Pygmy Dipole Resonance. The states are described within the Hartree-Fock plus RPA formalism, using different parametrizations of the Skyrme interaction. We show how the information from combined reactions processes involving the Coulomb and different mixtures of isoscalar and isovector nuclear interactions can provide a clue to reveal the characteristic features of these states.
The multipole vortical, toroidal, and compression modes are analyzed. Following the vorticity concept of Ravenhall and Wambach, the vortical operator is derived and related in a simple way to the toroidal and compression operators. The strength functions and velocity fields of the modes are analyzed in $^{208}$Pb within the random-phase-approximation using the Skyrme force SLy6. Both convection and magnetization nuclear currents are taken into account. It is shown that the isoscalar (isovector) vortical and toroidal modes are dominated by the convection (magnetization) nuclear current while th…
We explore giant resonance spectra and low-lying dipole strength in the Ni and Sn chains from proton rich to very neutron rich isotopes, relevant in astrophysical reaction chains. For the theoretical description we employ the random-phase approximation (RPA) plus many-body effects through a phonon coupling model with optimized selection of phonons. The nuclear force is based on the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock energy functional carried consistently through all steps of modelling. The main effect of phonon coupling is a broadening of the spectral distributions (collisional width). This broadening is par…
Important features of low-frequency collective vibrational excitations in neutron drip line nuclei are studied. We emphasize that pairing anti-halo effect in the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) theory play crucial roles to realize collective motions in loosely bound nuclei. We study the spatial properties of one particle - one hole (1p-1h) states with/without selfconsistent pairing correlations by solving simplified HF(B) equations in coordinate space. Next, by performing Skyrme-HFB plus selfconsistent quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) we investigate the first 2+ states in neutron …
We present a thorough analysis of the effects of the tensor interaction on the multipole response of magic nuclei, using the fully self-consistent Random Phase Approximation (RPA) model with Skyrme interactions. We disentangle the modifications to the static mean field induced by the tensor terms, and the specific features of the residual particle-hole (p-h) tensor interaction, for quadrupole (2+), octupole (3-), and also magnetic dipole (1+) responses. It is pointed out that the tensor force has a larger effect on the magnetic dipole states than on the natural parity states 2+ and 3-, especia…
The RPA monopole strength as well as the unperturbed particle-hole excitation strength is studied, in which the strength in the continuum is properly treated without discretizing unbound particle spectra. The model is the sef-consistent Hartree-Fock calculation and the RPA Green's function method with Skyrme interactions. Numerical examples are the Ni-isotopes, especially $^{68}_{28}$Ni$_{40}$, in which an experimental observation of low-lying socalled "pigmy resonance" with an appreciable amount of monopole strength at 12.9 $\pm$ 1.0 MeV was recently reported. In the present study it is concl…
