Second RPA calculations with a Skyrme force are performed to describe both high- and low-lying excited states in $^{16}$O. The coupling between 1 particle-1 hole and 2 particle-2 hole as well as that between 2 particle-2 hole configurations among themselves are fully taken into account and the residual interaction is never neglected, not resorting therefore to a generally used approximate scheme where only the first kind of coupling is considered. The issue of the rearrangement terms in the matrix elements beyond standard RPA is addressed and discussed. As a general feature of second RPA results, a several-MeV shift of the strength distribution to lower energies is systematically found with respect to RPA distributions. A much more important fragmentation of the strength is also naturally provided by second RPA due to the huge number of 2 particle-2 hole configurations. A better description of the excitation energies of the low-lying 0$^+$ and 2$^+$ states is obtained with second RPA with respect to RPA.
A finite rank separable approximation for the particle-hole RPA calculations with Skyrme interactions is extended to take into account the pairing. As an illustration of the method energies and transition probabilities for the quadrupole and octupole excitations in some O, Ar, Sn and Pb isotopes are calculated. The values obtained within our approach are very close to those that were calculated within QRPA with the full Skyrme interaction. They are in reasonable agreement with experimental data.
A finite rank separable approximation for the quasiparticle RPA with Skyrme interactions is applied to study the low lying quadrupole and octupole states in some S isotopes and giant resonances in some spherical nuclei. It is shown that characteristics calculated within the suggested approach are in a good agreement with available experimental data.
Neutrino emission and their transport of energy to the supernova shock region are sensitive to the physics of hot and dense nuclear matter, which is a complex problem due to the strong correlations induced by nuclear forces. We derive charged-current opacities for electron neutrinos and antineutrinos in supernova matter using a self-consistent approach based on the Skyrme effective interaction. We include a mean field energy shift due to nuclear interaction and corrections due to RPA correlations. A complete treatment of the full Skyrme interaction, including a spin-orbit term, is given. To te…
We discuss major differences between electric and magnetic excitations in nuclei appearing in self-consistent calculation based on Skyrme energy-density functionals. Tools of analysis are Landau-Migdal parameters for bulk properties and RPA for resonance modes of $^{208}$Pb as representative of finite nuclei. We show that the relation between the effective mass and the effective particle-hole interaction, well known in the Landau-Migdal theory, explains the success of self-consistent calculations of electric transitions in such approaches. This effect, however, does not automatically exist in …
The self-consistent separable RPA (random phase approximation) method is formulated for Skyrme forces with pairing. The method is based on a general self-consistent procedure for factorization of the two-body interaction. It is relevant for various density- and current-dependent functionals. The contributions of the time-even and time-odd Skyrme terms as well as of the Coulomb and pairing terms to the residual interaction are taken self-consistently into account. Most of the expression have a transparent analytical form, which makes the method convenient for the treatment and analysis. The sep…
We formulate the self-consistent separable random-phase-approximation (SRPA) method and specify it for Skyrme forces with pairing for the case of axially symmetric deformed nuclei. The factorization of the residual interaction allows to avoid diagonalization of high-rank RPA matrices, which dramatically reduces the computational expense. This advantage is crucial for the systems with a huge configuration space, first of all for deformed nuclei. SRPA takes self-consistently into account the contributions of both time-even and time-odd Skyrme terms as well as of the Coulomb force and pairing. Th…
Two basic concepts of nuclear vorticity, hydrodynamical (HD) and Rawenthall-Wambach (RW), are critically inspected. As a test case, we consider the interplay of irrotational and vortical motion in isoscalar electric dipole E1(T=0) modes in $^{208}$Pb, namely the toroidal and compression modes. The modes are described in a self-consistent random-phase-approximation (RPA) with the Skyrme force SLy6. They are examined in terms of strength functions, transition densities, current fields, and formfactors. It is shown that the RW conception (suggesting the upper component of the nuclear current as t…
The spin-flip M1 giant resonance is explored in the framework of Random Phase Approximation on the basis of the Skyrme energy functional. A representative set of eight Skyrme parameterizations (SkT6, SkM*, SLy6, SG2, SkO, SkO', SkI4, and SV-bas) is used. Light and heavy, spherical and deformed nuclei ($^{48}$Ca, $^{158}$Gd, $^{208}$Pb, and $^{238}$U) are considered. The calculations show that spin densities play a crucial role in forming the collective shift in the spectrum. The interplay of the collective shift and spin-orbit splitting determines the quality of the description. None of the co…
The contribution of Lambda hyperons to neutrino scattering rates is calculated in the random phase approximation in a model where the interaction is described by a Skyrme potential. Finite temperature and neutrino trapping are taken into account in view of applications to the deleptonization stage of protoneutron star cooling. The hyperons can remove the problem of ferromagnetic instability common to (nearly) all Skyrme parametrizations of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. As a consequence, there is not any longer a pole at the transition in the neutrino-baryon cross section. However there stil…
The effect of nuclear deformation on the isoscalar toroidal and compression dipole modes in prolate $^{170}$Yb is studied in the framework of the random-phase-approximation method with a representative set of Skyrme forces (SV-bas, SLy6, SkM$^*$ and SkI3). It is shown that the deformation crucially redistributes the strength of both modes. The compression mode has the same sequence of $μ$=0 and 1 branches as the isovector giant dipole resonance where for prolate nuclei the $μ=0$ mode is lower in energy ($μ$ being the projection of the axial momentum of the mode). Instead, the toroidal mode exh…
The E1(T=1) isovector dipole giant resonance (GDR) in heavy and super-heavy deformed nuclei is analyzed over a sample of 18 rare-earth nuclei, 4 actinides and three chains of super-heavy elements (Z=102, 114 and 120). Basis of the description is self-consistent separable RPA (SRPA) using the Skyrme force SLy6. The self-consistent model well reproduces the experimental data (energies and widths) in the rare-earth and actinide region. The trend of the resonance peak energies follows the estimates from collective models, showing a bias to the volume mode for the rare-earths isotopes and a mix of …
A comparative analysis of toroidal, compressional and vortical dipole strengths in the spherical $^{144}$Sm and the deformed $^{154}$Sm is performed within the random-phase-approximation using a set of different Skyrme forces. Isoscalar (T=0), isovector (T=1), and electromagnetic excitation channels are considered. The role of the nuclear convection $j_{\text{con}}$ and magnetization $j_{\text{mag}}$ currents is inspected. It is shown that the deformation leads to an appreciable redistribution of the strengths and causes a spectacular deformation splitting (exceeding 5 MeV) of the isoscalar co…
A short review on the self-consistent RPA based on a energy-density functional of the Skyrme type is given. We also present an extension of the RPA where the coupling of phonons to the single-particle states is considered. Within this approach we present numerical results which are compared with data. The self-consistent approach is compared with the Landau-Migdal theory. Here we derive from the self-consistent $ph$ interaction, the Landau-Migdal parameters as well as their density dependence. In the Appendix a new derivation of the reduced matrix elements of the $ph$ interaction is presented.
Low-energy E1 strength in neutron-rich $^{132-164}$Sn isotopes is analyzed in the framework of the Skyrme random phase approximation (RPA) with different Skyrme forces. A double folding procedure is applied to take into account the energy-dependent width effects beyond RPA. All the considered Skyrme forces indicate a soft prolate deformation in the open shell isotopes $^{142-164}$Sn. The integrated E1 strength in the energy region of the pygmy resonance grows with the neutron number. The influence of deformation on the integrated strength near the particle emission thresholds (which is of a ke…
The finite amplitude method (FAM), which we have recently proposed (T. Nakatsukasa, T. Inakura, and K. Yabana, Phys. Rev. C 76, 024318 (2007)), simplifies significantly the fully self-consistent RPA calculation. Employing the FAM, we are conducting systematic, fully self-consistent response calculations for a wide mass region. This paper is intended to present a computational scheme to be used in the systematic investigation and to show the performance of the FAM for a realistic Skyrme energy functional. We implemented the method in the mixed representation in which the forward and backward RP…
The isoscalar giant monopole resonances (ISGMR) and giant dipole resonances (ISGDR) in medium-heavy nuclei are investigated in the framework of HF+RPA and HF-BCS+QRPA with Skyrme effective interactions. It is found that pairing has little effect on these modes. It is also found that the coupling of the RPA states to 2p-2h configurations results in about (or less than) 1 MeV shifts of the resonance energies and at the same time gives the correct total widths. For the ISGMR, comparison with recent data leads to a value of nuclear matter compression modulus close to 215 MeV. However, a discrepanc…
It has been recently shown, that some Skyrme functionals can lead to non-converging results in the calculation of some properties of atomic nuclei. A previous study has pointed out a possible link between these convergence problems and the appearance of finite-size instabilities in symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) around saturation density. We show that the finite-size instabilities not only affect the ground state properties of atomic nuclei, but they can also influence the calculations of vibrational excited states in finite nuclei. We perform systematic fully-self consistent Random Phase Appr…
The effects of a zero-range tensor component of the effective interaction on nuclear response functions are determined in the so-called RPA approach. Explicit formula in the case of symmetric homogeneous isotropic nuclear matter are given for each spin-isospin excitation channel. It is shown for a typical interaction with tensor couplings that the effects are quantitatively important, mainly in vector channels.
A finite rank separable approximation for the quasiparticle RPA calculations with Skyrme interactions that was proposed in our previous work is extended to take into account the coupling between one- and two-phonon terms in the wave functions of excited states. It is shown that characteristics calculated within the suggested approach are in a good agreement with available experimental data.
We discuss novel features of a new continuum RPA formulated in the coordinate-space Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov framework. This continuum quasiparticle RPA takes into account both the one- and two-particle escaping channels. The theory is tested with numerical calculations for monopole, dipole and quadrupole excitations in neutron-rich oxygen isotopes near the drip-line. Effects of the particle-particle RPA correlation caused by the pairing interaction are discussed in detail, and importance of the selfconsistent treatment is emphasized.
We provide for the first time accurate assessments of the consequences of violations of self-consistency in the Hartree-Fock based random phase approximation (RPA) as commonly used to calculate the energy $E_c$ of the nuclear breathing mode. Using several Skyrme interactions we find that the self-consistency violated by ignoring the spin-orbit interaction in the RPA calculation causes a spurious enhancement of the breathing mode energy for spin unsaturated systems. Contrarily, neglecting the Coulomb interaction in the RPA or performing the RPA calculations in the TJ scheme underestimates the b…
Most of the Skyrme interactions are known to predict spin or isospin instabilities beyond the saturation density of nuclear matter which contradict predictions based on realistic interactions. A modification of the standard Skyrme interaction is proposed so that the ferromagnetic instability is removed. The new terms are density dependent and modify only the spin p-h interaction in the case of spin-saturated system. Consequences for the nuclear response function and neutrino mean free path are shown. The overall effect of the RPA correlations makes dense matter more transparent for neutrino pr…
The isoscalar giant monopole resonance (GMR) in Samarium isotopes (from spherical $^{144}$Sm to deformed $^{148-154}$Sm) is investigated within the Skyrme random-phase-approximation (RPA) for a variety of Skyrme forces. The exact RPA and its separable version (SRPA) are used for spherical and deformed nuclei, respectively. The quadrupole deformation is shown to yield two effects: the GMR broadens and attains a two-peak structure due to the coupling with the quadrupole giant resonance.
Spontaneous fission barriers, quadrupole inertia, and zero-point quadrupole-energy corrections are calculated for 252,256,258Fm in the framework of the self-consistent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock+BCS theory. Two ways of computing dynamical inertia are employed: the Gaussian Overlap Approximation to the Generator Coordinate Method and cranking ansatz. The Skyrme results are compared with those of the Gogny-Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov model.
A fully self-consistent microscopic framework for evaluation of nuclear weak-interaction rates at finite temperature is introduced, based on Skyrme functionals. The single-nucleon basis and the corresponding thermal occupation factors of the initial nuclear state are determined in the finite-temperature Skyrme Hartree-Fock model, and charge-exchange transitions to excited states are computed using the finite-temperature RPA. Effective interactions are implemented self-consistently: both the finite-temperature single-nucleon Hartree-Fock equations and the matrix equations of RPA are based on th…
Gamow-Teller (GT) and spin-dipole (SD) strength distributions of four doubly magic nuclei $^{48}$Ca, $^{90}$Zr, $^{132}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb are studied by the self-consistent Hartree-Fock plus random phase approximation (RPA) method. The Skyrme forces SAMi and SAMi-T without/with tensor interactions are adopted in our calculations. The calculated strengths are compared with available experimental data. The RPA results of GT and SD strengths of all four nuclei show fine agreement with observed GT and SD resonances in energy. A small GT peak below the main GT resonance is better described by the S…
We examine to which extent correlated realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions, derived within the Unitary Correlation Operator Method (UCOM), can describe nuclear collective motion in the framework of first-order random-phase approximation (RPA). To this end we employ the correlated Argonne V18 interaction in calculations within the so-called "Extended" RPA (ERPA) and investigate the response of closed-shell nuclei. The ERPA is a renormalized RPA version which considers explicitly the depletion of the Fermi sea due to long-range correlations and thus allows us to examine how these affect the ex…
The main goal of the paper is to investigate theoretically the experimentally observed fragmentation of the isovector $M1$ resonance in $^{208}$Pb within a self-consistent model based on an energy-density functional (EDF) of the Skyrme type. This fragmentation (spread of the $M1$ strength) is not reproduced in a conventional one-particle--one-hole ($1p1h$) random-phase approximation (RPA) and thus has to be investigated in the framework of more complicated models. However, previously applied models of this type were not self-consistent. In the present work, we use a recently developed renormal…
The collective excitation phenomena in atomic nuclei are studied in two different formulations of the Random Phase Approximation (RPA): (i) RPA based on correlated realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions constructed within the Unitary Correlation Operator Method (UCOM), and (ii) relativistic RPA (RRPA) derived from effective Lagrangians with density-dependent meson-exchange interactions. The former includes the dominant interaction-induced short-range central and tensor correlations by means of an unitary transformation. It is shown that UCOM-RPA correlations induced by collective nuclear vibra…
By means of the mixed representation RPA based on the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock mean field, we investigate low-frequency octupole excitations built on the superdeformed (SD) states in the N=Z nuclei around 40Ca and the neutron-rich Sulfur isotopes. The RPA calculation is carried out fully self-consistently on the three-dimensional Cartesian mesh in a box, and yields a number of low-frequency octupole vibrations built on the SD states in 32S, 36Ar, 40Ca and 44Ti. In particular, a strongly collective K^π=1^- octupole vibration is suggested to appear on top of the SD state in 40Ca. For 48,50S close to …
Density functional theory is a preferred microscopic method for calculation of nuclear properties over the whole nuclear chart. Besides ground-state properties, which are calculated by Hartree-Fock theory, nuclear excitations can be described by means of Random Phase Approximation (RPA). The main objective of the present work is to give Skyrme RPA formalism for spherically symmetric nuclei, using the techniques of angular-momentum coupling. Various auxiliary topics, such as Hartree-Fock theory, Coulomb integral, center-of-mass corrections and pairing, are treated as well. RPA method is derived…
We have studied the precession mode, the rotational excitation built on the high-$K$ isomeric state, in comparison with the recently identified wobbling mode. The random-phase-approximation (RPA) formalism, which has been developed for the nuclear wobbling motion, is invoked and the precession phonon is obtained by the non-collective axially-symmetric limit of the formalism. The excitation energies and the electromagnetic properties of the precession bands in $^{178}$W are calculated, and it is found that the results of RPA calculations well correspond to those of the rotor model; the correspo…
In the present contribution, we discuss the behavior of Skyrme forces when they are employed to study both neutron stars and giant resonance states in 208Pb within the fully self-consistent Random Phase Approximation (RPA). We point out that clear correlations exist between the results for the isoscalar monopole and isovector dipole resonances (ISGMR and IVGDR), and definite quantities which characterize the equation of state (EOS) of uniform matter. We propose that the RPA results or, to some extent, the mentioned EOS parameters, are used as constraints when a force is fitted. This suggestion…
Although many random-phase approximation (RPA) calculations of the Gamow-Teller (GT) response exist, this is not the case for calculations going beyond the mean-field approximation. We apply a consistent model that includes the coupling of the GT resonance to low-lying vibrations, to nuclei of the $fp$ shell. Among other motivations, our goal is to see if the particle-vibration coupling can redistribute the low-lying GT$^+$ strength that is relevant for electron-capture processes in core-collapse supernova. We conclude that the lowering and fragmentation of that strength are consistent with th…
We investigate collective multipole excitations for closed shell nuclei from 16O to 208Pb using correlated realistic nucleon -nucleon interactions in the framework of the random phase approximation (RPA). The dominant short-range central and tensor correlations a re treated explicitly within the Unitary Correlation Operator Method (UCOM), which provides a phase-shift equivalent correlated interaction V_UCOM adapted to simple uncorrelated Hilbert spaces. The same unitary transformation that defines the correlated interaction is used to derive correlated transition operators. Using V_UCOM we sol…
Two complementary methods to describe the collective motion, RPA and Wigner function moments method, are compared on an example of a simple model - harmonic oscillator with quadrupole-quadrupole residual interaction. It is shown that they give identical formulae for eigenfrequencies and transition probabilities of all collective excitations of the model including the scissors mode, which here is the subject of our special attention. The exact relation between the variables of the two methods and the respective dynamical equations is established. The normalization factor of the "synthetic" scis…
We study the predictive power of Skyrme forces with respect to low lying quadrupole spectra along the chains of Sn, Cd, and Te isotopes. Excitation energies and B(E2) values for the lowest quadrupole states are computed from a collective Schroedinger equation which as deduced through collective path generated by constraint Skyrme-Hartree-Fock (SHF) plus self-consistent cranking for the dynamical response. We compare the results from four different Skyrme forces, all treated with two different pairing forces (volume versus density-dependent pairing). The region around the neutron shell closure …
The fully self-consistent Random Phase Approximation (RPA) is constructed within the Unitary Correlation Operator Method (UCOM), which describes the dominant interaction-induced short-range central and tensor correlations by a unitary transformation. Based on the correlated Argonne V18 interaction, the RPA is employed in studies of multipole response in closed-shell nuclei across the nuclide chart. The UCOM-RPA results in a collective character of giant resonances, and it describes rather well the properties of isoscalar giant monopole resonances. However, the excitation energies of isovector …
We investigate the precession motion of the exotic torus configuration in high-spin excited states of $^{40}$Ca. For this aim, we use the three-dimensional time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) method. Although the high-spin torus isomer is a unique quantum object characterized by the alignment of angular momenta of independent single-particle motions, we find that the obtained moment of inertia for rotations about an axis perpendicular to the symmetry axis is close to the rigid-body value. We also analyze the microscopic structure of the precession motion using the random-phase approximation (RP…
In the past decades, the γ-decay of giant resonances has been studied using phenomenological models. In keeping with possible future studies performed with exotic beams, microscopically-based frameworks should be envisaged. In the present paper, we introduce a model which is entirely based on Skyrme effective interactions, and treats the ground-state decay within the fully self-consistent Random Phase Approximation (RPA) and the decay to low-lying states at the lowest order beyond RPA. The model is applied to 208Pb and 90Zr, and the results are compared with experimental data.
Based on the formalism of thermo-field dynamics a new approach for studying collective excitations in hot finite Fermi systems is presented. Two approximations going beyond the thermal RPA namely renormalized thermal RPA and thermal second RPA are formulated.
We study the effect of tensor correlations on single-particle and collective states within Skyrme Hartree-Fock and RPA model. Firstly, We study the role of tensor interactions in Skyrme effective interaction on the spin-orbit splittings of N=82 isotones and Z=50 isotope. The isospin dependence of the shell structure is well described as the results of the tensor interactions without destroying good properties of the binding energy and the rms charge radii of the heavy nuclei. Secondly, We performed self-consistent HF+RPA calculations for charge exchange 1$^+$ states in $^{90}$Zr and $^{208}$Pb…
A possible relation of the low-lying E1 (pygmy resonance) and toroidal strengths is analyzed by using Skyrme-RPA results for the strength functions, transition densities and current fields in $^{208}$Pb. It is shown that the irrotational pygmy motion can appear as a local manifestation of the collective vortical toroidal dipole resonance (TDR) at the nuclear surface. The RPA results are compared to unperturbed (1ph) ones.
We present a number conserving particle-hole RPA theory for collective excitations in the transition from normal to superfluid nuclei. The method derives from an RPA theory developed long ago in quantum chemistry using antisymmetric geminal powers, or equivalently number projected HFB states, as reference states. We show within a minimal model of pairing plus monopole interactions that the number conserving particle-hole RPA excitations evolve smoothly across the superfluid phase transition close to the exact results, contrary to particle-hole RPA in the normal phase and quasiparticle RPA in t…
It is known that some well-established parametrizations of the EDF do not always provide converged results for nuclei and a qualitative link between this finding and the appearance of finite-size instabilities of SNM near saturation density when computed within the RPA has been pointed out. We seek for a quantitative and systematic connection between the impossibility to converge self-consistent calculations of nuclei and the occurrence of finite-size instabilities in SNM for the example of scalar-isovector (S=0, T=1) instabilities of the standard Skyrme EDF. We aim to establish a stability cr…
The properties of the low-lying, collective 2+ states in neutron-rich oxygen isotopes are investigated in the framework of self-consistent microscopic models with effective Skyrme interactions. In RPA the excitation energies E2+ can be well described but the transition probabilities are much too small as compared to experiment. Pairing correlations are then accounted for by performing quasiparticle RPA calculations. This improves considerably the predictions of B(E2) values and it enables one to calculate more reliably the ratios Mn/Mp of neutron-to-proton transition amplitudes. A satisfactory…
We obtain the rotational spectrum of strange multibaryon states by performing the SU(3) collective coordinate quantization of the static multi-Skyrmions. These background configurations are given in terms of rational maps, which are very good approximations and share the same symmetries as the exact solutions. Thus, the allowed quantum numbers in the spectra and the structure of the collective Hamiltonians we obtain are also valid in the exact case. We find that the predicted spectra are in overall agreement with those corresponding to the alternative bound state soliton model.
Lately we have been tackling the problem of describing nuclear collective excitations starting from correlated realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions. The latter are constructed within the Unitary Correlation Operator Method (UCOM), starting from realistic NN potentials. It has been concluded that first-order RPA with a two-body UCOM interaction is not capable, in general, of reproducing quantitatively the properties of giant resonances (GRs), due to missing higher-order configurations and long-range correlations as well as neglected three-body terms in the Hamiltonian. Here we report res…
Using the Hartree-Fock plus random-phase-approximation (HF+RPA), we study the impurity effect of $Λ$ hyperon on the collective vibrational excitations of double-$Λ$ hypernuclei. To this end, we employ a Skyrme-type $ΛN$ and $ΛΛ$ interactions for the HF calculations, and the residual interactions for RPA derived with the same interactions. We find that inclusion of two $Λ$ hyperons in $^{16}$O shifts the energy of the collective states towards higher energies. In particular, the energy of the giant monopole resonance of $^{\,\,18}_{ΛΛ}$O, as well as that of $^{210}_{ΛΛ}$Pb, becomes larger. This…
The finite amplitude method (FAM) is a very efficient approach for solving the fully self-consistent random-phase approximation (RPA) equations. We use FAM to rederive the RPA matrices for general Skyrme-like functionals, calculate the electric dipole (E1) and the magnetic dipole (M1) giant resonances, and compare the results with available experimental and evaluated data. For the E1 transitions in heavy nuclei, the calculations reproduce well the resonance energy of the photoabsorption cross sections. In the case of M1 transitions, we show that the residual interaction does not affect the tra…
We systematically analyze the recent claim that nonrelativistic and relativistic mean field (RMF) based random phase approximation (RPA) calculations for the centroid energy E_0 of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance yield for the nuclear matter incompressibility coefficient, K_{nm}, values which differ by about 20%. For an appropriate comparison with the RMF based RPA calculations, we obtain the parameters for the Skyrme force used in the nonrelativistic model by adopting the same procedure as employed in the determination of the NL3 parameter set of an effective Lagrangian used in the RMF…
Charge exchange spin-dipole (SD) excitations of $^{90}$Zr and $^{208}$Pb are studied by using a Skyrme Hartree-Fock(HF) + Random Phase approximation (RPA). The calculated spin-dipole strength distributions are compared with experimental data obtained by $^{90}$Zr (p,n) $^{90}$Nb and $^{90}$Zr (n,p) $^{90}$ Nb reactions. The model-independent SD sum rule values of various Skyrme interactions are studied in comparison with the experimental values in order to determine the neutron skin thickness of $^{90}$Zr. The pressure of the neutron matter equation of state (EOS) and the nuclear matter symmet…
Three methods to describe collective motion, Random Phase Approximation (RPA), Wigner Function Moments (WFM) and the Green's Function (GF) method are compared in detail and their physical content analyzed on an example of a simple model, the harmonic oscillator with quadrupole--quadrupole residual interaction. It is shown that they give identical formulae for eigenfrequencies and transition probabilities of all collective excitations of the model, including the scissors mode, which is the subject of our special attention. The exact relation between the RPA and WFM variables and the respective …
