Perovskite LaTiO$_3$ bulk is a typical Mott-insulator with G-type antiferromagnetic order. In this work, the biaxial strain effects on the ground magnetic order of LaTiO$_3$ films grown on various substrates have been studied. For the compressive strain, LaTiO$_3$ films grown on LaAlO$_3$, LaGaO$_3$, and SrTiO$_3$ substrates undergo a phase transition from the original G-type antiferromagnet to A-type antiferromagnet. The underlying physical mechanisms are the lattice distortions tunned by strain. While for the tensile strain, the BaTiO$_3$ and LaScO$_3$ substrates have been tested, which show a tendency to transit the LaTiO$_3$ to the C-type antiferromagnet. Furthermore, our calculations find that the magnetic transitions under epitaxial strain do not change the insulating fact of LaTiO$_3$.
Using first-principles density functional theory calculations, we examined the ground state property of LaTiO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$ superlattice. Total energy calculations, taking account of the structural distortions, $U$ dependence, and exchange correlation functional dependence, show that the spin and orbital ground state can be controlled systematically by the epitaxial strain. In the wide range of strains, ferromagnetic spin and antiferro orbital ordering are stabilized, which is notably different from the previously reported ground state in titanate systems. By applying large tensile strains, th…
We use density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory to demonstrate the emergence of a metallic layer at the interface between the two Mott insulators LaTiO$_3$ and LaVO$_3$. The metallic layer is due to charge transfer across the interface, which alters the valence state of the transition metal cations close to the interface. Somewhat counter-intuitively, the charge is transferred from the Ti cations with formal $d^1$ electron configuration to the the V cations with formal $d^2$ configuration, thereby increasing the occupation difference of the $t_{2g}$ states. This can be unders…
The perovskite oxynitride LaTiO\textsubscript{2}N is a promising material for photocatalytic water splitting under visible light. One of the obstacles towards higher efficiencies of this and similar materials stems from charge-carrier recombination, which could be suppressed by the built-in electric field in polar materials. In this study, we investigate the spontaneous polarization in epitaxially strained LaTiO\textsubscript{2}N thin films via density functional theory calculations. The effect of epitaxial strain on the anion order, resulting out-of-plane polarization, energy barriers for pol…
The interrelation between the epitaxial strain and oxygen deficiency in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3-δ thin films was studied in terms of structural and functional properties. The films with a thickness of 1000Å were prepared using a PLD system equipped with a RHEED facility and a pyrometric film temperature control. The epitaxial strain and the oxygen deficiency in the samples were systematically modified using three different substrates: SrTiO3, (LaAlO3)0.3-(Sr2AlTaO6)0.7 and LaSrAlO4, and four different oxygen pressures during film growth ranging from 0.27mbar to 0.1mbar. It could be demonstrated that th…
We show that a ferromagnetic (FM) order in the orthorhombic CaRuO3, which is a non-magnetic and iso-structural analog of FM system SrRuO3, can be established and stabilized by the means of tensile epitaxial strain. Investigations on the structural and magnetic property correlations in the CaRuO3 films with different degrees of strain reveal that the FM moment increases with increasing the tensile strain. This is an experimental verification to the theoretical predictions of scaling of the tensile epitaxial strain and the magnetic order in this system. Our studies further establish that the ten…
We have synthesized epitaxial NdNiO$_{3}$ ultra-thin films in a layer-by-layer growth mode under tensile and compressive strain on SrTiO$_{3}$ (001) and LaAlO$_3$ (001), respectively. A combination of X-ray diffraction, temperature dependent resistivity, and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy has been applied to elucidate electronic and structural properties of the samples. In contrast to the bulk NdNiO$_{3}$, the metal-insulator transition under compressive strain is found to be completely quenched, while the transition remains under the tensile strain albeit modified from the bulk behavior.
We have studied the influence of epitaxial strain on magnetic orderings and the couplings between the spin and polar phonons in the 1:1 SrMnO$_3$/LaMnO$_3$ superlattice from first principles. Magnetic phase transitions of the superlattice induced by epitaxial strain are observed, consistent with previous reports. We find that oxygen octahedral rotations lower the ground state energy but do not destroy the magnetic phase transitions induced by strain. We compute zone center phonon frequencies and eigenvectors as functions of epitaxial strain and magnetic ordering. A substantial increase of the …
Huge deformations of the crystal lattice can be achieved in materials with inherent structural instability by epitaxial straining. By coherent growth on seven different substrates the in-plane lattice constants of 50 nm thick Fe70Pd30 films are continuously varied. The maximum epitaxial strain reaches 8,3 % relative to the fcc lattice. The in-plane lattice strain results in a remarkable tetragonal distortion ranging from c/abct = 1.09 to 1.39, covering most of the Bain transformation path from fcc to bcc crystal structure. This has dramatic consequences for the magnetic key properties. Magneto…
First-principles density-functional calculations reveal a large spin-phonon coupling in cubic SrMnO$_{3}$, with ferromagnetic ordering producing a polar instability. Through combination of this coupling with the strain-polarization coupling characteristic of perovskites, the bulk antiferromagnetic paraelectric ground state of SrMnO$_3$ is shown to be driven to a previously unreported multiferroic ferroelectric-ferromagnetic state by increasing epitaxial strain, both tensile and compressive. This state has a computed polarization and estimated Curie temperature above 54 $μ$C/cm$^2$ and 92 K. La…
Multiferroics with the coexistence of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic orders are ideal candidates for magnetoelectric applications. Unfortunately, only very few ferroelectric-ferromagnetic multiferroics (with low magnetic critical temperature) were discovered. Here we perform first principles calculations to investigate the effects of the epitaxial strain on the properties of BiMnO3 films grown along the pseudocubic [001] direction. Unlike the ground state with the centrosymmetric C2/c space group in bulk, we reveal that the tensile epitaxial strain stabilizes the ferromagnetic and ferroelectr…
Multiferroic BiFeO3 epitaxial films with thickness ranging from 40 nm to 960 nm were grown by pulsed laser deposition on SrTiO3 (001) substrates with SrRuO3 bottom electrodes. X-ray characterization shows that the structure evolves from angularly-distorted tetragonal with c/a ~ 1.04 to more bulk-like distorted rhombohedral (c/a ~ 1.01) as the strain relaxes with increasing thickness. Despite this significant structural evolution, the ferroelectric polarization along the body diagonal of the distorted pseudo-cubic unit cells, as calculated from measurements along the normal direction, barely ch…
Using density-functional theory calculations, we investigate the magnetic as well as the dynamical properties of tetragonal SrRuO3 (SRO) under the influence of epitaxial strain. It is found that both the tensile and compressive strain in the xy-plane could induce the abrupt change in the magnetic moment of Ru atom. In particular, under the in-plane ~4% compressive strain, a ferromagnetic to nonmagnetic transition is induced. Whereas for the tensile strain larger than 3%, the Ru magnetic moment drops gradually with the increase of the strain, exhibiting a weak ferromagnetic state. We find that …
We investigate the effect of epitaxial strain on the Mott metal-insulator transition (MIT) in perovskite systems with d^1 and d^2 electron configuration of the transition metal (TM) cation. We first discuss the general trends expected from the changes in the crystal-field splitting and in the hopping parameters that are induced by epitaxial strain. We argue that the strain-induced crystal-field splitting generally favors the Mott-insulating state, whereas the strain-induced changes in the hopping parameters favor the metallic state under compressive strain and the insulating state under tensil…
Ferromagnetic insulators play a crucial role in the development of low-dissipation quantum magnetic devices for spintronics. Epitaxial LaCoO3 thin film is a prominent ferromagnetic insulator, in which the robust ferromagnetic ordering emerges owing to epitaxial strain. Whereas it is evident that strong spin-lattice coupling induces ferromagnetism, the reported ferromagnetic properties of epitaxially strained LaCoO3 thin films were highly consistent. For example, even under largely modulated degree of strain, the reported Curie temperatures of epitaxially strained LaCoO3 thin films lie within 8…
Oxygen packaging in transition metal oxides determines the metal-oxygen hybridization and electronic occupation at metal orbitals. Strontium vanadate (SrVO$_3$), having a single electron in a $3d$ orbital, is thought to be the simplest example of strongly correlated metallic oxides. Here, we determine the effects of epitaxial strain on the electronic properties of SrVO$_3$ thin films, where the metal-oxide sublattice is corner-connected. Using x-ray absorption and x-ray linear dichroism at the V $L_{2,3}$ and O $K$-edges, it is observed that tensile or compressive epitaxial strain change the h…
The effect of epitaxial strain on the structural and electronic properties of LaVO_3 is investigated through density functional theory (DFT) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). Two different growth orientations of the crystal are considered, one preserving the bulk Pbnm space-group symmetry and another giving rise to a symmetry lowering to P2_1/m. In the nonmagnetic DFT structures, the two growth orientations are equally favored for all tensile strains considered here, as well as for compressive strains weaker than -3%. For stronger compressive strains, the P2_1/m orientation is favored an…
We have studied electrical transport and magnetic properties of epitaxial La_0.66 Sr_0.33 Mn O_3 thin films grown on different substrates having different lattice strains induced by different film-substrate lattice-mismatch. Both electrical transport and magnetic properties exhibit strong correlation with Jahn-Teller strain. Our study shows a sufficiently large Jahn-Teller strain giving rise to distinct semi-conducting/insulating state in LSMO thin films even below the respective para-ferromagnetic Curie temperatutes Tc, which is in contradiction with the established phase diagram of Sr-doped …
Using {\it ab initio} methods, we investigate the modification of the magnetic properties of the $m=2$ member of the strontium iridates Ruddlesden-Popper series Sr$_{m+1}$Ir$_{m}$O$_{3m+1}$, bilayer Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$, induced by epitaxial strain and oxygen vacancies. Unlike the single layer compound Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, which exhibits a robust in-plane magnetic order, the energy difference between in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic orderings in Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ is much smaller and it is expected that small external perturbations could induce magnetic transitions. Our results indicate that epitaxial…
The structure, morphology, and electrical properties of epitaxial a-axis oriented thin films of Nd(0.2)Sr(0.8)MnO(3) are reported for thicknesses 10 nm <= t <= 150 nm. Films were grown with both tensile and compressive strain on various substrates. It is found that the elongated crystallographic c-axes of the films remain fully strained to the substrates for all thicknesses in both strain states. Relaxation of the a and b axes is observed for t>= 65 nm with films grown under tensile strain developing uniaxial crack arrays (running along the c axis) due to a highly anisotropic thermal expansion…
We use density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) to study multiple control parameters for tuning the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in CaVO$_3$ thin films. We focus on separating the effects resulting from substrate-induced epitaxial strain from those related to the reduced thickness of the film. We show that tensile epitaxial strain of around 3-4% is sufficient to induce a transition to a paramagnetic Mott-insulating phase. This corresponds to the level of strain that could be achieved on a SrTiO$_3$ substrate. Using free-standing slab models, we then demonstrate…
We present evidence of strain-induced modulation of electron correlation effects and increased orbital anisotropy in the rutile phase of epitaxial VO$_2$/TiO$_2$ films from hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and soft V L-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy, respectively. By using the U(1) slave spin formalism, we further argue that the observed anisotropic correlation effects can be understood by a model of orbital selective Mott transition at a filling that is non-integer, but close to the half-filling. Because the overlaps of wave functions between $d$ orbitals are modified by the strain, …
Density functional calculations are performed to study the effect of epitaxial strain on PbZrO3. We find a remarkably small energy difference between the epitaxially strained polar R3c and nonpolar Pbam structures over the full range of experimentally accessible epitaxial strains -3% < η< 4%. While ferroelectricity is favored for all compressive strains, for tensile strains the small energy difference between the nonpolar ground state and the alternative polar phase yields a robust antiferroelectric ground state. The coexistence of ferroelectricity and antiferroelectricity observed in thin fil…
Manipulating the strain induced poly-domains and phase transition in correlated oxide material are important for high performance devices fabrication. Though the electronic transport in the strained oxide film at macroscopic scales can be directly measured, the anisotropic electronic state and the controllable phase separation cross the insulator-to-metal transition within nanoscale size are still elusive. Here, we selected VO2 crystal film as a prototypical oxide and achieved the manipulation of anisotropy electronic phase separation via injecting He+ nanobeam into VO2 film at room temperatur…
The effect of deposition oxygen pressure (P$_{O}$) on phase separation (PS) induced in epitaxial La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$/NdGaO$_{3}$(001) films was investigated. Fully oxygenated films grown at high P$_{O}$ are anisotropically strained. They exhibit PS over a wide temperature range, because of the large orthorhombicity of NdGaO$_{3}$ substrates. The paramagnetic insulator-to-ferromagnetic metal (FM) and FM-to-antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI) transitions gradually shift to lower temperatures with decreasing PO. The AFI state is initially weakened (P$_{O}$ >= 30 Pa), but then becomes mo…
Using first-principles computations, we study the effect of epitaxial strains on electronic structure variations across ZnSe/ZnTe nano-heterostructures. Epitaxial strains of various types are modeled using pseudomorphic ZnSe/ZnTe heterostructures. We find that a wide range of band gaps (spanning the visible solar spectrum) and band offsets (0-1.5 eV) is accessible across the heterostructures in a controllable manner via reasonable levels of epitaxial strain. In addition to quantum confinement effects, strain in ZnSe/ZnTe heterostructures may thus be viewed as a powerful degree of freedom that …
We present a study of the lattice response to the compressive and tensile biaxial stress in La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) and SrRuO3 (SRO) thin films grown on a variety of single crystal substrates: SrTiO3, DyScO3, NdGaO3 and (La,Sr)(Al,Ta)O3. The results show, that in thin films under misfit strain, both SRO and LSMO lattices, which in bulk form have orthorhombic (SRO) and rhombohedral (LSMO) structures, assume unit cells that are monoclinic under compressive stress and tetragonal under tensile stress. The applied stress effectively modifies the BO6 octahedra rotations, which degree and direction c…
The compressive strain effects on the magnetic ground state and electronic structure of strained GdTiO 3 have been studied by the first-principles method. Different from the congeneric YTiO3 and LaTiO3 cases both of which becomes the A-type antiferromagnetism on the (001) LaAlO3 substrate despite their contrastive magnetism, the ground state of strained GdTiO3 on the LaAlO3 substrate changes from the original ferromagnetism to G-type antiferromagnetim, instead of the A-type one although Gd 3+ is between Y3+ and La3+. Only when the in-plane compressive strain is large enough, e.g. on the (001) …
In this paper, we have studied the effect of strain relaxation on magneto-transport properties of La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3 epitaxial films (200 nm thick), which were deposited by pulsed laser deposition technique under identical conditions. All the films are epitaxial and have cubic unit cell. The amount of strain relaxation has been varied by taking three different single crystal substrates of SrTiO_3, LaAlO_3 and MgO. It has been found that for thicker films the strain gets relaxed and produces variable amount of disorder depending on the strength of strain relaxation. The magnitude of lattice rela…
Combining effective Hamiltonian and direct $ab$ $initio$ computation, we obtain the phase diagram of SnTiO$_{3}$ with respect to epitaxial strain and temperature, demonstrating the complex features of the phase diagram and providing insight into the epitaxially strained SnTiO$_{3}$, a presumably simple perovskite. In the phase diagram, two triple points are found, which may be exploited to to achieve high-performance piezoelectric effects. On the other hand, despite the inclusion of the degree of freedoms related to oxygen octahedron tilting, it is found that ferroelectric displacements domina…
We report on the effect of epitaxial strain on magnetic and optical properties of perovskite LaCrO3 (LCO) single crystal thin films. Epitaxial LCO thin films are grown by pulsed laser deposition on proper choice of substrates to impose different strain states. A combined experimental and theoretical approach is used to demonstrate the direct correlation between lattice-strain and functional properties. The magnetization results show that the lattice anisotropy plays a critical role in controlling the magnetic behavior of LCO films. The strain induced tetragonality in the film lattice strongly …
We report results from two-dimensional Raman spectroscopy studies of large-area epitaxial graphene grown on SiC. Our work reveals unexpectedly large variation in Raman peak position across the sample resulting from inhomogeneity in the strain of the graphene film, which we show to be correlated with physical topography by coupling Raman spectroscopy with atomic force microscopy. We report that essentially strain free graphene is possible even for epitaxial graphene.
We have synthesized epitaxial Sr2IrO4 thin-films on various substrates and studied their electronic structures as a function of lattice-strains. Under tensile (compressive) strains, increased (decreased) Ir-O-Ir bond-angles are expected to result in increased (decreased) electronic bandwidths. However, we have observed that the two optical absorption peaks near 0.5 eV and 1.0 eV are shifted to higher (lower) energies under tensile (compressive) strains, indicating that the electronic-correlation energy is also affected by in-plane lattice-strains. The effective tuning of electronic structures …
Epitaxial strain can be used to modify the properties of ferroelectric thin films. From the experimental viewpoint, the challenge is to fine-tune the magnitude of the strain. We illustrate how, by using a suitable combination of composition and substrate, the magnitude of the epitaxial strain can be controlled in a continuous manner. The phase diagram of PbxSr1-xTiO3 films grown epitaxially on (110)-DyScO3 is calculated using a Devonshire-Landau approach. A boundary between in-plane and out-of-plane oriented ferroelectric phases is predicted to take place at $x \approx$ 0.8. A series of PbxSr1…
The impact of epitaxial strain on the structural, electronic, and thermoelectric properties of p-type transparent Sr-doped LaCrO3 thin films has been investigated. For this purpose, high-quality fully strained La0.75Sr0.25CrO3 (LSCO) epitaxial thin films were grown by molecular beam epitaxy on three different (pseudo)cubic (001)-oriented perovskite oxide substrates: LaAlO3, (LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2AlTaO6)0.7, and DyScO3. The lattice mismatch between the LSCO films and the substrates induces in-plane strain ranging from -2.06% (compressive) to +1.75% (tensile). The electric conductivity can be controlle…
A combined experimental and computational investigation of coupling between polarization and epitaxial strain in highly polar ferroelectric PbZr_0.2Ti_0.8O_3 (PZT) thin films is reported. A comparison of the properties of relaxed (tetragonality c/a = 1.05) and highly-strained (c/a = 1.09) epitaxial films shows that polarization, while being amongst the highest reported for PZT or PbTiO_3 in either film or bulk forms (P_r = 82 microC/cm^2), is almost independent of the epitaxial strain. We attribute this behavior to a suppressed sensitivity of the A-site cations to epitaxial strain in these Pb-…
X-ray analysis of ferroelectric thin layers of Ba1/2Sr1/2TiO3 with different thickness reveals the presence of internal strain gradients across the film thickness and allows us to propose a functional form for the internal strain profile. We use this to calculate the direct influence of strain gradient, through flexoelectric coupling, on the degradation of the ferroelectric properties of thin films with decreasing thickness, in excellent agreement with the observed behaviour. This work highlights the link between strain relaxation and strain gradients in epitaxial films, and shows the pressing…
Temperature dependent structural phase transitions of SrRuO3 thin films epitaxially grown on SrTiO3(001) single crystal substrates have been studied using high-resolution x-ray diffraction. In contrast to bulk SrRuO3, coherently strained epitaxial layers do not display cubic symmetry up to ~730 oC and remain tetragonal. Such behavior is believed to be induced by compressive strain between the SrRuO3 layer and SrTiO3 substrate due to lattice mismatch. The tetragonal symmetry during growth explains the single domain growth on miscut SrTiO3 substrates with step edges running along the [100] or [0…
Strain engineering has attracted great attention, particularly for epitaxial films grown on a different substrate. Residual strains of SiC have been widely employed to form ultra-high frequency and high Q factor resonators. However, to date the highest residual strain of SiC was reported to be limited to approximately 0.6%. Large strains induced into SiC could lead to several interesting physical phenomena, as well as significant improvement of resonant frequencies. We report an unprecedented nano strain-amplifier structure with an ultra-high residual strain up to 8% utilizing the natural resi…
We investigate energetically favorable structures of ABO$_2$N oxynitrides as functions of pressure and strain via swarm-intelligence-based structure prediction methods, DFT lattice dynamics and first-principles molecular dynamics. We predict several thermodynamically stable polar oxynitride perovskites under high pressures. In addition, we find that ferroelectric polar phases of perovskite-structured oxynitrides can be thermodynamically stable and synthesized at high pressure on appropriate substrates. The dynamical stability of the ferroelectric oxynitrides under epitaxial strain at ambient p…
Biaxial strain in coherent epitaxial thin films can have a pronounced effect on the point defect profile in the film material. Detailed fundamental knowledge of the interaction of strain with point defects is crucial in understanding the stoichiometry and resulting properties of strained thin films. Here we investigate the effect of biaxial strain on the formation energy of cation and anion vacancies using MnO as a model system. Our density functional theory calculations show that, as expected from local volume arguments, compressive strain favours the formation of cation vacancies. Interestin…
The structure and polarization of the as-yet hypothetical Ruddlesden-Popper compound Pb$_2$TiO$_4$ are investigated within density-functional theory. Zone enter phonons of the high-symmetry K$_2$NiF$_4$-type reference structure, space group $I4/mmm$, were calculated. At the theoretical ground-state lattice constants, there is one unstable infrared-active phonon. This phonon freezes in to give the $I2mm$ ferroelectric state. As a function of epitaxial strain, two additional ferroelectric phases are found, with space groups $I4mm$ and $F2mm$ at compressive and tensile strains, respectively.
We investigate the variation of the spontaneous ferroelectric polarization with epitaxial strain for BaTiO$_3$, PbTiO$_3$, LiNbO$_3$, and BiFeO$_3$ using first principles calculations. We find that while the strain dependence of the polarization is very strong in the simple perovskite systems BaTiO$_3$ and PbTiO$_3$ it is only weak in LiNbO$_3$ and BiFeO$_3$. We show that this different behavior can be understood purely in terms of the piezoelectric and elastic constants of the unstrained bulk material, and we discuss several factors that determine the strain behavior of a certain material.
We use first principles density functional theory calculations to investigate the effect of biaxial strain in the low-temperature structural and ferroelectric properties of [111]-oriented SrTiO$_3$. We find that [111] biaxial strain, achievable by coherent epitaxial growth along the [111] direction, induces structural distortions in SrTiO$_3$ that are not present in either bulk or [001]-oriented SrTiO$_3$. Under [111] biaxial strain, SrTiO$_3$ displays ferroelectricity at tensile strain, and paraelectricity at compressive strain. We compute the phonon spectrum and macroscopic polarization of S…
The effect of epitaxial strain on the cation distribution in spinel ferrites CoFe2O4 and NiFe2O4 is investigated by GGA+U total energy calculations. We obtain a very strong (moderate) tendency for cation inversion in NiFe2O4 (CoFe2O4), in agreement with experimental bulk studies. This preference for the inverse spinel structure is reduced by tensile epitaxial strain, which can lead to strong sensitivity of the cation distribution on specific growth conditions in thin films. Furthermore, we obtain significant energy differences between different cation arrangements with the same degree of inver…
The theory of epitaxial strain energy is extended beyond the harmonic approximation to account for large film/substrate lattice mismatch. We find that for fcc noble metals (i) directions <001> and <111> soften under tensile biaxial strain (unlike zincblende semiconductors) while (ii) <110> and <201> soften under compressive biaxial strain. Consequently, (iii) upon sufficient compression <201> becomes the softest direction (lowest elastic energy), but (iv) <110> is the hardest direction for large tensile strain. (v) The dramatic softening of <001> in fcc noble metals upon biaxial tensile strain…
Epitaxial strain has been shown to drive structural phase transitions along with novel functionalities in perovskite-based thin-films. Aliovalent doping at the A-site can drive an insulator-to-metal and magnetic transitions in perovskites along with a variety of interesting structural and electronic phenomena. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate here, how coupling epitaxial strain with A-site hole doping in a multiferroic double perovskite, Bi2FeCrO6, could lead to mitigation of issues related to anti-site defects and lowered magnetisation in thin-films of the material. We also…
We study the formation and evolution of coherent islands on lattice mismatched epitaxially strained films. Faceted islands form in films with aniostropic surface tension. Under annealing, these islands ripen until a stable array is formed, with an island density which increases with film thickness. Under deposition, an island shape transition occurs, which leads to a bimodal island size distribution. In films with isotropic surface tension we observe continual ripening of islands above a certain film thickness. A stable wavy morphology is found in thinner films.
Epitaxial strain in 4d ferromagnet SrRuO3 films is directly linked to the physical properties through the strong coupling between lattices, electrons, and spins. It provides an excellent opportunity to tune the functionalities of SrRuO3 in electronic and spintronic devices. However, a thorough understanding of the epitaxial strain effect in SrRuO3 has remained elusive due to the lack of systematic studies. This study demonstrates wide-range epitaxial strain control of electrical and magnetic properties in high-quality SrRuO3 films. The epitaxial strain was imposed by cubic or pseudocubic perov…
A current challenge in the field of magnetoelectric multiferroics is to identify systems that allow a controlled tuning of states displaying distinct magnetoelectric responses. Here we show that the multiferroic ground state of the archetypal multiferroic TbMnO3 is dramatically modified by epitaxial strain. Neutron diffraction reveals that in highly strained films the magnetic order changes from the bulk-like incommensurate bc-cycloidal structure to commensurate magnetic order. Concomitant with the modification of the magnetic ground state, optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) and electric…
First-principles calculations of the epitaxial-strain phase diagram of perovskite SrCoO$_{3}$ are presented. Through combination of the large spin-phonon coupling with polarization-strain coupling and coupling of the band gap to the polar distortion, both tensile and compressive epitaxial strain are seen to drive the bulk ferromagnetic-metallic (FM-M) phase to antiferromagnetic-insulating-ferroelectric (AFM-I-FE) phases, the latter having unusually low elastic energy. At these coupled magnetic-ferroelectric metal-insulator phase boundaries, cross responses to applied electric and magnetic fiel…
This work explores the impact of in-plane bi-axial (epitaxial) strain on the cation distribution and electric polarization of the Aurivillius-phase compound Bi$_5$FeTi$_3$O$_{15}$ using first-principles electronic structure calculations. Our calculations indicate that the site preference of the Fe$^{3+}$ cation can be controlled via epitaxial strain. Tensile strain enhances the preference for the inner sites within the perovskite-like layers of the Aurivillius-phase structure, whereas compressive strain favors occupation of the outer sites within the perovskite-layers, i.e., the sites close to…
The phenomenon of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) provides fundamental information on the physics of magnetic materials and lies at the heart of a variety of signal processing microwave devices. Here we demonstrate theoretically that substrate-induced lattice strains may change the FMR frequency of an epitaxial ferromagnetic film dramatically, leading to ultralow and ultrahigh resonance frequencies at room temperature. Remarkably, the FMR frequency varies with the epitaxial strain nonmonotonically, reaching minimum at a critical strain corresponding to the strain-induced spin reorientation trans…
We have investigated the effect of epitaxial strain on the magnetic properties and $B$-site cation ordering in multiferroic Bi$_2$FeCrO$_6$ (001) thin films using a density-functional theory approach. We find that in thin films with rock-salt ordering of Fe and Cr the ground state is characterised by C-type anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) order. This is in contrast to the bulk form of the material which was predicted to be a ferrimagnet with G-type AFM order. Furthermore, the cation ordered thin-films undergo a transition with epitaxial strain from C to A-type AFM order. Other magnetic orders appear …
The origin of strain-induced ferromagnetism, which is robust regardless of the type and degree of strain in LaCoO3 (LCO) thin films, is enigmatic despite intensive research efforts over the past decade. Here, by combining scanning transmission electron microscopy with ab initio density functional theory plus U calculations, we report that the ferromagnetism does not emerge directly from the strain itself, but rather from the creation of compressed structural units within ferroelastically formed twin-wall domains. The compressed structural units are magnetically active with the rocksalt-type hi…
We present the temperature- and thickness-dependent structural and morphological evolution of strain induced transformations in highly-strained epitaxial BiFeO3 films deposited on LaAlO3 (001) substrates. Using high-resolution X-ray diffraction and temperature-dependent scanning-probe-based studies we observe a complex temperature- and thickness-dependent evolution of phases in this system. A thickness-dependent transformation from a single monoclinically distorted tetragonal-like phase to a complex mixed-phase structure in films with thicknesses up to ~200 nm is the consequence of a strain-in…
Using an extension of a first-principles method developed by King-Smith and Vanderbilt [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 49}, 5828 (1994)], we investigate the effects of in-plane epitaxial strain on the ground-state structure and polarization of eight perovskite oxides: BaTiO$_3$, SrTiO$_3$, CaTiO$_3$, KNbO$_3$, NaNbO$_3$, PbTiO$_3$, PbZrO$_3$, and BaZrO$_3$. In addition, we investigate the effects of a nonzero normal stress. The results are shown to be useful in predicting the structure and polarization of perovskite oxide thin films and superlattices.
High-index Bi2Se3(221) film has been grown on In2Se3-buffered GaAs(001), in which a much retarded strain relaxation dynamics is recorded. The slow strain-relaxation process of in epitaxial Bi2Se3(221) can be attributed to the layered structure of Bi2Se3 crystal, where the epifilm grown along [221] is like a pile of weakly-coupled quintuple layer slabs stacked side-by-side on substrate. Finally, we have revealed the strong chemical bonding at the interface of Bi2Se3 and In2Se3 by plotting differential charge contour calculated by first-principle method. This study points to the feasibility of a…
