Various properties of the (continuous) Cesàro operator $\mathsf{C}$, acting on Banach and Fréchet spaces of continuous functions and $L^p$-spaces, are investigated. For instance, the spectrum and point spectrum of $\mathsf{C}$ are completely determined and a study of certain dynamics of $\mathsf{C}$ is undertaken (eg. hyper- and supercyclicity, chaotic behaviour). In addition, the mean (and uniform mean) ergodic nature of $\mathsf{C}$ acting in the various spaces is identified.
In this paper, we extend the concept of absolutely Cesàro boundedness to the fractional case. We construct a weighted shift operator belonging to this class of operators, and we prove that if $T$ is an absolutely Cesàro bounded operator of order $α$ with $0<α\le 1,$ then $\| T^n\|=o(n^α)$, generalizing the result obtained for $α=1$. Moreover, if $α> 1$, then $\|T^{n}\|= O(n)$. We apply such results to get stability properties for the Cesàro means of bounded operators.
We study several notions of boundedness for operators. It is known that any power bounded operator is absolutely Cesàro bounded and strong Kreiss bounded (in particular, uniformly Kreiss bounded). The converses do not hold in general. In this note, we give examples of topologically mixing absolutely Cesàro bounded operators on $\ell^p(\mathbb{N})$, $1\le p < \infty$, which are not power bounded, and provide examples of uniformly Kreiss bounded operators which are not absolutely Cesàro bounded. These results complement very limited number of known examples (see \cite{Shi} and \cite{AS}). In \ci…
We extend the well-known Katznelson-Tzafriri theorem, originally posed for power-bounded operators, to the case of Cesàro bounded operators of any order $α>0.$ For this purpose, we use a functional calculus between a new class of fractional Wiener algebras and the algebra of bounded linear operators, whose existence is characterized by the Cesàro boundedness. Finally, we apply the main theorem to get ergodicity results for the Cesàro means of bounded operators.
A detailed investigation is made of the continuity, spectrum and mean ergodic properties of the Cesàro operator $C$ when acting on the strong duals of power series spaces of infinite type. There is a dramatic difference in the nature of the spectrum of $C$ depending on whether or not the strong dual space (which is always Schwartz) is nuclear.
The discrete Cesàro operator $\mathsf{C}$ is investigated in the class of smooth sequence spaces $λ_0(A)$ of finite type. This class contains properly the power series spaces of finite type. Of main interest is its spectrum, which is distinctly different in the cases when $λ_0(A)$ is nuclear and when it is not. The nuclearity of $λ_0(A)$ is characterized via certain properties of the spectrum of $\mathsf{C}$. Moreover, $\mathsf{C}$ is always power bounded and uniformly mean ergodic on $λ_0(A)$.
We consider a large class of operator means and prove that a number of ergodic theorems, as well as growth estimates known for particular cases, continue to hold in the general context under fairly mild regularity conditions. The methods developed in the paper not only yield a new approach based on a general point of view, but also lead to results that are new, even in the context of the classical Cesaro means.
Unlike for $\ell_p$, $1<p\leq\infty$, the discrete Cesàro operator $C$ does not map $\ell_1$ into itself. We identify precisely those weights $w$ such that $C$ does map $\ell_1(w)$ continuously into itself. For these weights a complete description of the eigenvalues and the spectrum of $C$ are presented. It is also possible to identify all $w$ such that $C$ is a compact operator in $\ell_1(w)$. The final section investigates the mean ergodic properties of $C$ in $\ell_1(w)$. Many examples are presented in order to supplement the results and to illustrate the phenomena that occur.
In this paper we study the main properties of the Cesàro means of bi-continuous semigroups, introduced and studied by Kühnemund in [24]. We also give some applications to Feller semigroups generated by second-order elliptic differential operators with unbounded coefficients in $C_b(\R^N)$ and to evolution operators associated with nonautonomous second-order differential operators in $C_b(\R^N)$ with time-periodic coefficients.
The discrete Cesàro operator $\mathsf{C}$ is investigated in the class of power series spaces $Λ_0(α)$ of finite type. Of main interest is its spectrum, which is distinctly different when the underlying Fréchet space $Λ_0(α)$ is nuclear as for the case when it is not. Actually, the nuclearity of $Λ_0(α)$ is characterized via certain properties of the spectrum of $\mathsf{C}$. Moreover, $\mathsf{C}$ is always power bounded, uniformly mean ergodic and, whenever $Λ_0(α)$ is nuclear, also has the property that the range $(I-\mathsf{C})^m(Λ_0(α))$ is closed in $Λ_0(α)$, for each $m\in\mathbb{N}$.
The Cesaro operator $\mathsf{C}$, when acting in the classical growth Banach spaces $A^{-γ}$ and $A_0^{-γ}$, for $γ> 0 $, of analytic functions on $\mathbb{D}$, is investigated. Based on a detailed knowledge of their spectra (due to A. Aleman and A.-M. Persson) we are able to determine the norms of these operators precisely. It is then possible to characterize the mean ergodic and related properties of $\mathsf{C}$ acting in these spaces. In addition, we determine the largest Banach space of analytic functions on $\mathbb{D}$ which $\mathsf{C}$ maps into $A^{-γ}$ (resp. into $A_0^{-γ}$); this …
We investigate (uniform) mean ergodicity of weighted composition operators on the space of smooth functions and the space of distributions, both over an open subset of the real line. Among other things, we prove that a composition operator with a real analytic diffeomorphic symbol is mean ergodic on the space of distributions if and only if it is periodic with period 2. Our results are based on a characterization of mean ergodicity in terms of Cesàro boundedness and a growth property of the orbits for operators on Montel spaces which is of independent interest.
We characterize Cesàro-Orlicz function spaces $Ces_φ$ containing isomorphic copy of $l^\infty$. We also describe the subspaces $(Ces_φ)_a$ of all order continuous elements of $Ces_φ$. Finally, we study the monotonicity structure of the spaces $Ces_φ$ and $(Ces_φ)_a$.
We extract quantitative information (specifically, a rate of metastability in the sense of Terence Tao) from a proof due to Kazuo Kobayasi and Isao Miyadera, which shows strong convergence for Cesàro means of nonexpansive maps on Banach spaces.
In this paper, we study Markov chains (MC) on topological spaces within the framework of the operator approach. We extend the Markov operator from the space of countably additive measures to the space of finitely additive measures. Cesaro means for a Markov sequence of measures and their asymptotic behavior in the weak topology are considered. It is proved ergodic theorem that in order for the Cesaro means to converge weakly to some bounded regular finitely additive (or countably additive) measure it is necessary and sufficient that all invariant finitely additive measures are not separable fr…
The norm of $C-I$ on $\ell^p$, where $C$ is the Cesàro operator, is shown to be $1/(p-1)$ when $1<p\le2$. This verifies a recent conjecture of G. J. O. Jameson. The norm of $C-I$ on $\ell^p$ is also determined when $2< p<\infty$. The two parts together answer a question raised by G. Bennett in 1996. Operator norms in the continuous case, Hardy's averaging operator minus identity, are already known. Norms in the discrete and continuous cases coincide.
Techniques from Descriptive Set Theory are applied in order to study the Topological Complexity of families of operators naturally connected to ergodic operators in infinite dimensional Banach Spaces. The families of ergodic, uniform-ergodic,Cesaro-bounded and power-bounded operators are shown to be Borel sets, while the family of super-ergodic operators is shown to be either coanalytic or Borel according to specific structures of the Space. Moreover, trees and coanalytic ranks are introduced to characterize super-ergodic operators as well as spaces where the above classes of operators do not …
The Cesàro function spaces $Ces_p=[C,L^p]$, $1\le p\le\infty$, have received renewed attention in recent years. Many properties of $[C,L^p]$ are known. Less is known about $[C,X]$ when the Cesàro operator takes its values in a rearrangement invariant (r.i.) space $X$ other than $L^p$. In this paper we study the spaces $[C,X]$ via the methods of vector measures and vector integration. These techniques allow us to identify the absolutely continuous part of $[C,X]$ and the Fatou completion of $[C,X]$; to show that $[C,X]$ is never reflexive and never r.i.; to identify when $[C,X]$ is weakly seque…
The discrete Cesàro operator $ C $ acts continuously in various classical Banach sequence spaces within $ \mathbb{C}^{\mathbb{N}}.$ For the coordinatewise order, many such sequence spaces $ X $ are also complex Banach lattices (eg. $c_0, \ell^p $ for $ 1 < p \leq \infty , $ and $ ces (p)$ for $ p \in \{ 0 \} \cup ( 1, \infty )).$ In such Banach lattice sequence spaces, $ C $ is always a positive operator. Hence, its order spectrum is well defined within the Banach algebra of all regular operators on $ X .$ The purpose of this note is to show, for every $ X $ belonging to the above list of Bana…
Let $(Ω,μ)$ be a $σ$-finite measure space, and let $X\subset L^1(Ω)+L^\infty(Ω)$ be a fully symmetric space of measurable functions on $(Ω,μ)$. If $μ(Ω)=\infty$, necessary and sufficient conditions are given for almost uniform convergence in $X$ (in Egorov's sense) of Cesàro averages $M_n(T)(f)=\frac1n\sum_{k = 0}^{n-1}T^k(f)$ for all Dunford-Schwartz operators $T$ in $L^1(Ω)+ L^\infty(Ω)$ and any $f\in X$. Besides, it is proved that the averages $M_n(T)$ converge strongly in $X$ for each Dunford-Schwartz operator $T$ in $L^1(Ω)+L^\infty(Ω)$ if and only if $X$ has order continuous norm and $L^…
Necessary and sufficient conditions under which the Cesàro--Orlicz sequence space $\cfi$ is nontrivial are presented. It is proved that for the Luxemburg norm, Cesàro--Orlicz spaces $\cfi$ have the Fatou property. Consequently, the spaces are complete. It is also proved that the subspace of order continuous elements in $\cfi$ can be defined in two ways. Finally, criteria for strict monotonicity, uniform monotonicity and rotundity (= strict convexity) of the spaces $\cfi$ are given.
We study the properties of the Volterra and Cesàro operators viewed on the $L^1$-Müntz space $M_Λ^1$ with range in the space of continuous functions. These operators are neither compact nor weakly compact. We estimate how far from being (weakly) compact they are by computing their (generalized) essential norm. It turns out that this latter does not depend on $Λ$ and is equal to $1/2$.
The goal of this paper is to present a complete characterisation of points of order continuity in abstract Cesàro function spaces $CX$ for $X$ being a symmetric function space. Under some additional assumptions mentioned result takes the form $(CX)_a = C(X_a)$. We also find simple equivalent condition for this equality which in the case of $I=[0,1]$ comes to $X\neq L^\infty$. Furthermore, we prove that $X$ is order continuous if and only if $CX$ is, under assumption that the Cesàro operator is bounded on $X$. This result is applied to particular spaces, namely: Cesàro-Orlicz function spaces, C…
A complex scalar $λ$ is said to be an extended eigenvalue of a bounded linear operator $T$ on a complex Banach space if there is a nonzero operator $X$ such that $TX= λXT.$ Such an operator $X$ is called an extended eigenoperator of $T$ corresponding to the extended eigenvalue $λ.$ The purpose of this paper is to give a description of the extended eigenvalues for the discrete Cesàro operator $C_0,$ the finite continuous Cesàro operator $C_1$ and the infinite continuous Cesàro operator $C_\infty$ defined on the complex Banach spaces $\ell^p,$ $L^p[0,1]$ and $L^p[0,\infty)$ for $1 < p <\infty$ b…
Let $U$ be a unitary operator acting on the Hilbert space $\ch$, and $\a:\{1,..., 2k\}\mapsto\{1,..., k\}$ a pair partition. Then the ergodic average $$ \frac{1}{N^{k}}\sum_{n_{1},...,n_{k}=0}^{N-1} U^{n_{\a(1)}}A_{1}U^{n_{\a(2)}}... U^{n_{\a(2k-1)}}A_{2k-1}U^{n_{\a(2k)}} $$ converges in the strong operator topology provided $U$ is almost periodic, that is when $\ch$ is generated by the eigenvalues of $U$. We apply the present result to obtain the convergence of the Cesaro mean of several multiple correlations.
The generalized Cesàro operators $\mathcal{C}_t$, for $t\in[0,1)$, introduced in the 1980's by Rhaly, are natural analogues of the classical Cesàro averaging operator $\mathcal{C}_1$ and act in various Banach sequence spaces $X\subseteq {\mathbb C}^{{\mathbb N}_0}$. In this paper we concentrate on a certain class of Banach lattices for the coordinate-wise order, which includes all separable, rearrangement invariant sequence spaces, various weighted $c_0$ and $\ell^p$ spaces and many others. In such Banach lattices $X$ the operators $\mathcal{C}_t$, for $t\in[0,1)$, are always compact (unlike $…
The spectrum of the Cesàro operator $\mathsf{C}$ is determined on the spaces which arises as intersections $A^p_{α+}$ (resp. unions $A^p_{α-}$) of Bergman spaces $A_α^p$ of order $1<p<\infty$ induced by standard radial weights $(1-|z|)^α$, for $0<α<\infty$. We treat them as reduced projective limits (resp. inductive limits) of weighted Bergman spaces $A^p_α$, with respect to $α$. Proving that these spaces admit the monomials as a Schauder basis paves the way for using Grothendieck-Pietsch criterion to deduce that we end up with a non-nuclear Fréchet-Schwartz space (resp. a non-nuclear (DFS)-sp…
We show that ergodic flows in noncommutative fully symmetric spaces (associated with a semifinite von Neumann algebra) generated by continuous semigroups of positive Dunford-Schwartz operators and modulated by bounded Besicovitch almost periodic functions converge almost uniformly. The corresponding local ergodic theorem is also discussed.
We characterize those non-negative, measurable functions $ψ$ on $[0,1]$ and positive, continuous functions $ω_1$ and $ω_2$ on $\mathbb R^+$ for which the generalized Hardy-Cesàro operator $$(U_ψf)(x)=\int_0^1 f(tx)ψ(t)\,dt$$ defines a bounded operator $U_ψ:L^1(ω_1)\to L^1(ω_2)$. Furthermore, we extend $U_ψ$ to a bounded operator on $M(ω_1)$ with range in $L^1(ω_2)\oplus\mathbb Cδ_0$. Finally, we show that the zero operator is the only weakly compact generalized Hardy-Cesàro operator from $L^1(ω_1)$ to $L^1(ω_2)$.
Consider two continuous linear operators $T\colon X_1(μ)\to Y_1(ν)$ and $S\colon X_2(μ)\to Y_2(ν)$ between Banach function spaces related to different $σ$-finite measures $μ$ and $ν$. We characterize by means of weighted norm inequalities when $T$ can be strongly factored through $S$, that is, when there exist functions $g$ and $h$ such that $T(f)=gS(hf)$ for all $f\in X_1(μ)$. For the case of spaces with Schauder basis our characterization can be improved, as we show when $S$ is for instance the Fourier operator, or the Cesàro operator. Our aim is to study the case when the map $T$ is besides…
We analyze a proof of Bruck to obtain an explicit rate of asymptotic regularity for Cesàro means in uniformly convex Banach spaces. Our rate will only depend on a norm bound and a modulus $η$ of uniform convexity. One ingredient for the proof by Bruck is a result of Pisier, which shows that every uniformly convex (in fact every uniformly nonsquare) Banach space has some Rademacher type $q>1$ with a suitable constant $C_q$. We explicitly determine $q$ and $C_q$, which only depend on the single value $η(1)$ of our modulus. Beyond these specific results, we summarize how work of Bruck has inspire…
It is known that, for a positive Dunford-Schwartz operator in a noncommutative $L^p-$space, $1\leq p<\infty$ or, more generally, in a noncommutative Orlicz space with order continuous norm, the corresponding ergodic averages converge bilaterally almost uniformly. We show that these averages converge bilaterally almost uniformly in each noncommutative symmetric space $E$ such that $μ_t(x) \to 0$ as $t \to 0$ for every $x \in E$, where $μ_t(x)$ is a non-increasing rearrangement of $x$. In particular, these averages converge bilaterally almost uniformly in all noncommutative symmetric spaces with…
For a jointly measurable probability-preserving action $τ:\mathbb{R}^D\curvearrowright (X,μ)$ and a tuple of polynomial maps $p_i:\mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}^D$, $i=1,2,...,k$, the multiple ergodic averages \[ \frac{1}{T}\int_0^T (f_1\circ τ^{p_1(t)})(f_2\circ τ^{p_2(t)})... (f_k\circ τ^{p_k(t)})\,\mathrm{d} t \] converge in $L^2(μ)$ as $T \to \infty$ for any $f_1,f_2,...,f_k \in L^\infty(μ)$. This confirms the continuous-time analog of the conjectured norm convergence of discrete polynomial multiple ergodic averages, which in is its original formulation remains open in most cases. A proof of con…
