We introduce and study conic geometric programs (CGPs), which are convex optimization problems that unify geometric programs (GPs) and conic optimization problems such as semidefinite programs (SDPs). A CGP consists of a linear objective function that is to be minimized subject to affine constraints, convex conic constraints, and upper bound constraints on sums of exponential and affine functions. The conic constraints are the central feature of conic programs such as SDPs, while upper bounds on combined exponential/affine functions are generalizations of the types of constraints found in GPs. The dual of a CGP involves the maximization of the negative relative entropy between two nonnegative vectors jointly, subject to affine and conic constraints on the two vectors. Although CGPs contain GPs and SDPs as special instances, computing global optima of CGPs is not much harder than solving GPs and SDPs. More broadly, the CGP framework facilitates a range of new applications that fall outside the scope of SDPs and GPs. Specifically, we demonstrate the utility of CGPs in providing solutions to problems such as permanent maximization, hitting-time estimation in dynamical systems, the computation of the capacity of channels transmitting quantum information, and robust optimization formulations of GPs.
Farkas' Lemma is a foundational result in linear programming, with implications in duality, optimality conditions, and stochastic and bilevel programming. Its generalizations are known as theorems of the alternative. There exist theorems of the alternative for integer programming and conic programming. We present theorems of the alternative for conic integer programming. We provide a nested procedure to construct a function that characterizes feasibility over right-hand sides and can determine which statement in a theorem of the alternative holds.
The aim of this paper is to revisit some duality results in conic linear programming and to answer an open problem related to the duality gap function for Gale's example.
We revisit facial reduction from the point of view of projective geometry. This leads us to a homogenization strategy in conic programming that eliminates the phenomenon of weak infeasibility. For semidefinite programs (and others), this yields infeasibility certificates that can be checked in polynomial time. Furthermore, we propose a refined type of infeasibility, which we call stably infeasible, for which rational infeasibility certificates exist and that can be distinguished from other infeasibility types by our homogenization.
The Shannon capacity of a graph is an important graph invariant in information theory that is extremely difficult to compute. The Lovasz number, which is based on semidefinite programming relaxation, is a well-known upper bound for the Shannon capacity. To improve this upper bound, previous researches tried to generalize the Lovasz number using the ideas from the sum-of-squares optimization. In this paper, we consider the possibility of developing general conic programming upper bounds for the Shannon capacity, which include the previous attempts as special cases, and show that it is impossibl…
In the field of nonlinear mechanics, many challenging problems (e.g. plasticity, contact, masonry structures, nonlinear membranes) turn out to be expressible as conic programs. In general, such problems are non-smooth in nature (plasticity condition, unilateral condition, etc.), which makes their numerical resolution through standard Newton methods quite difficult. Their formulation as conic programs alleviates this difficulty since large-scale conic optimization problems can now be solved in a very robust and efficient manner, thanks to the development of dedicated interior-point algorithms. …
We consider the constrained assortment optimization problem under the mixed multinomial logit model. Even moderately sized instances of this problem are challenging to solve directly using standard mixed-integer linear optimization formulations. This has motivated recent research exploring customized optimization strategies and approximation techniques. In contrast, we develop a novel conic quadratic mixed-integer formulation. This new formulation, together with McCormick inequalities exploiting the capacity constraints, enables the solution of large instances using commercial optimization sof…
This paper is devoted to studying the robust isolated calmness of the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) solution mapping for a large class of interesting conic programming problems (including most commonly known ones arising from applications) at a locally optimal solution. Under the Robinson constraint qualification, we show that the KKT solution mapping is robustly isolated calm if and only if both the strict Robinson constraint qualification and the second order sufficient condition hold. This implies, among others, that at a locally optimal solution the second order sufficient condition is needed f…
This paper is concerned with the strong calmness of the KKT solution mapping for a class of canonically perturbed conic programming, which plays a central role in achieving fast convergence under situations when the Lagrange multiplier associated to a solution of these conic optimization problems is not unique. We show that the strong calmness of the KKT solution mapping is equivalent to a local error bound for solutions of perturbed KKT system, and is also equivalent to the pseudo-isolated calmness of the stationary point mapping along with the calmness of the multiplier set map at the corres…
Shunt FACTS devices, such as, a Static Var Compensator (SVC), are capable of providing local reactive power compensation. They are widely used in the network to reduce the real power loss and improve the voltage profile. This paper proposes a planning model based on mixed integer conic programming (MICP) to optimally allocate SVCs in the transmission network considering load uncertainty. The load uncertainties are represented by a number of scenarios. Reformulation and linearization techniques are utilized to transform the original non-convex model into a convex second order cone programming (…
We consider the conic linear program given by a closed convex cone in an Euclidean space and a matrix, where vector on the right-hand-side of the constraint system and the vector defining the objective function are subject to change. Using the strict feasibility condition, we prove the locally Lipschitz continuity and obtain some differentiability properties of the optimal value function of the problem under right-hand-side perturbations. For the optimal value function under linear perturbations of the objective function, similar differentiability properties are obtained under the assumption s…
In this paper, we accomplish a unified convergence analysis of a second-order method of multipliers (i.e., a second-order augmented Lagrangian method) for solving the conventional nonlinear conic optimization problems.Specifically, the algorithm that we investigated incorporates a specially designed nonsmooth (generalized) Newton step to furnish a second-order update rule for the multipliers. We first show in a unified fashion that under a few abstract assumptions, the proposed method is locally convergent and possesses a (nonasymptotic) superlinear convergence rate, even though the penalty par…
We propose an early termination technique for mixed integer conic programming for use within branch-and-bound based solvers. Our approach generalizes previous early termination results for ADMM-based solvers to a broader class of primal-dual algorithms, including both operator splitting methods and interior point methods. The complexity for checking early termination is $O(n)$ for each termination check assuming a bounded problem domain. We show that this domain restriction can be relaxed for problems whose data satisfies a simple rank condition, in which case each check requires an $O(n^2)$ s…
Due to the possible lack of primal-dual-type error bounds, the superlinear convergence for the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) residues of the sequence generated by augmented Lagrangian method (ALM) for solving convex composite conic programming (CCCP) has long been an outstanding open question. In this paper, we aim to resolve this issue by first conducting convergence rate analysis for the ALM with Rockafellar's stopping criteria under only a mild quadratic growth condition on the dual of CCCP. More importantly, by further assuming that the Robinson constraint qualification holds, we establish the …
We present a unifying framework for generating extended formulations for the polyhedral outer approximations used in algorithms for mixed-integer convex programming (MICP). Extended formulations lead to fewer iterations of outer approximation algorithms and generally faster solution times. First, we observe that all MICP instances from the MINLPLIB2 benchmark library are conic representable with standard symmetric and nonsymmetric cones. Conic reformulations are shown to be effective extended formulations themselves because they encode separability structure. For mixed-integer conic-representa…
This paper is devoted to the design of an efficient and convergent {semi-proximal} alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) for finding a solution of low to medium accuracy to convex quadratic conic programming and related problems. For this class of problems, the convergent two block semi-proximal ADMM can be employed to solve their primal form in a straightforward way. However, it is known that it is more efficient to apply the directly extended multi-block semi-proximal ADMM, though its convergence is not guaranteed, to the dual form of these problems. Naturally, one may ask the f…
In conic linear programming -- in contrast to linear programming -- the Lagrange dual is not an exact dual: it may not attain its optimal value, or there may be a positive duality gap. The corresponding Farkas' lemma is also not exact (it does not always prove infeasibility). We describe exact duals, and certificates of infeasibility and weak infeasibility for conic LPs which are nearly as simple as the Lagrange dual, but do not rely on any constraint qualification. Some of our exact duals generalize the SDP duals of Ramana, and Klep and Schweighofer to the context of general conic LPs. Some o…
Cut generation and lifting are key components for the performance of state-of-the-art mathematical programming solvers. This work proposes a new general cut-and-lift procedure that exploits the combinatorial structure of 0-1 problems via a binary decision diagram (BDD) encoding of their constraints. We present a general framework that can be applied to a wide range of binary optimization problems and show its applicability for second-order conic inequalities. We identify conditions for which our lifted inequalities are facet-defining and derive a new BDD-based cut generation linear program. Su…
In this paper, we provide an elementary, geometric, and unified framework to analyze conic programs that we call the strict complementarity approach. This framework allows us to establish error bounds and quantify the sensitivity of the solution. The framework uses three classical ideas from convex geometry and linear algebra: linear regularity of convex sets, facial reduction, and orthogonal decomposition. We show how to use this framework to derive error bounds for linear programming (LP), second order cone programming (SOCP), and semidefinite programming (SDP).
An Augmented Lagrangian Method for Conic Convex Programming
我们提出了一个新的一阶增广拉格朗日算法ALCC,用于求解形式为min{rho(x)+gamma(x)的凸锥规划:Ax-b in K,x in chi},其中rho和gamma是闭凸函数,并且gamma具有Lipschitz连续梯度,A是mxn实矩阵,K是闭凸锥,并且chi是“简单”凸紧集,最优化问题形式min{rho(x)+|x-x0|_2^2:x in chi}可以有效地求解任何给定的x 0。
In this paper, we propose a generalized alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) with semi-proximal terms for solving a class of convex composite conic optimization problems, of which some are high-dimensional, to moderate accuracy. Our primary motivation is that this method, together with properly chosen semi-proximal terms, such as those generated by the recent advance of symmetric Gauss-Seidel technique, is applicable to tackling these problems. Moreover, the proposed method, which relaxes both the primal and the dual variables in a natural way with one relaxation factor in the in…
Lemma 1 from the paper [N.E. Gretsky, J.M. Ostroy, W.R. Zame, Subdifferentiability and the duality gap, Positivity 6: 261--274, 2002] asserts that the value function $v$ of an infinite dimensional linear programming problem in standard form is lower semicontinuous whenever $v$ is proper and the involved spaces are normed vector spaces. In this note one shows that this statement is false even in finite-dimensional spaces, one provides an example of linear programming problem in Hilbert spaces whose (proper) value function is not lower semicontinuous (hence it is not subdifferentiable) at any po…
We propose a semi-proximal augmented Lagrangian based decomposition method for convex composite quadratic conic programming problems with primal block angular structures. Using our algorithmic framework, we are able to naturally derive several well known augmented Lagrangian based decomposition methods for stochastic programming such as the diagonal quadratic approximation method of Mulvey and Ruszczyński. Moreover, we are able to derive novel enhancements and generalizations of these well known methods. We also propose a semi-proximal symmetric Gauss-Seidel based alternating direction method …
In this paper we provide a detailed analysis of the iteration complexity of dual first order methods for solving conic convex problems. When it is difficult to project on the primal feasible set described by convex constraints, we use the Lagrangian relaxation to handle the complicated constraints and then, we apply dual first order algorithms for solving the corresponding dual problem. We give convergence analysis for dual first order algorithms (dual gradient and fast gradient algorithms): we provide sublinear or linear estimates on the primal suboptimality and feasibility violation of the g…
In this paper we introduce a new parameterized Quadratic Decision Rule (QDR), a generalisation of the commonly employed Affine Decision Rule (ADR), for two-stage linear adjustable robust optimization problems with ellipsoidal uncertainty and show that (affinely parameterized) linear adjustable robust optimization problems with QDRs are numerically tractable by presenting exact semi-definite program (SDP) and second order cone program (SOCP) reformulations. Under these QDRs, we also establish that exact conic program reformulations also hold for two-stage linear ARO problems, containing also ad…
We present a geometrical analysis on the completely positive programming reformulation of quadratic optimization problems and its extension to polynomial optimization problems with a class of geometrically defined nonconvex conic programs and their covexification. The class of nonconvex conic programs is described with a linear objective functionin a linear space $V$, and the constraint set is represented geometrically as the intersection of a nonconvex cone $K \subset V$, a face $J$ of the convex hull of $K$ and a parallel translation $L$ of a supporting hyperplane of the nonconvex cone $K$. …
Adaptive robust optimization problems are usually solved approximately by restricting the adaptive decisions to simple parametric decision rules. However, the corresponding approximation error can be substantial. In this paper we show that two-stage robust and distributionally robust linear programs can often be reformulated exactly as conic programs that scale polynomially with the problem dimensions. Specifically, when the ambiguity set constitutes a 2-Wasserstein ball centered at a discrete distribution, then the distributionally robust linear program is equivalent to a copositive program (…
In this paper we consider the use of extended formulations in LP-based algorithms for mixed integer conic quadratic programming (MICQP). Extended formulations have been used by Vielma, Ahmed and Nemhauser (2008) and Hijazi, Bonami and Ouorou (2013) to construct algorithms for MICQP that can provide a significant computational advantage. The first approach is based on an extended or lifted polyhedral relaxation of the Lorentz cone by Ben-Tal and Nemirovski (2001) that is extremely economical, but whose approximation quality cannot be iteratively improved. The second is based on a lifted polyhed…
The well known constant rank constraint qualification [Math. Program. Study 21:110--126, 1984] introduced by Janin for nonlinear programming has been recently extended to a conic context by exploiting the eigenvector structure of the problem. In this paper we propose a more general and geometric approach for defining a new extension of this condition to the conic context. The main advantage of our approach is that we are able to recast the strong second-order properties of the constant rank condition in a conic context. In particular, we obtain a second-order necessary optimality condition tha…
In this paper we present a complete iteration complexity analysis of inexact first order Lagrangian and penalty methods for solving cone constrained convex problems that have or may not have optimal Lagrange multipliers that close the duality gap. We first assume the existence of optimal Lagrange multipliers and study primal-dual first order methods based on inexact information and augmented Lagrangian smoothing or Nesterov type smoothing. For inexact (fast) gradient augmented Lagrangian methods we derive a total computational complexity of $\mathcal{O}\left(\frac{1}ε\right)$ projections onto …
The objective of this paper is to design an efficient and convergent alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) for finding a solution of medium accuracy to conic programming problems whose constraints consist of linear equalities, linear inequalities, a non-polyhedral cone and a polyhedral cone. For this class of problems, one may apply the directly extended ADMM to their dual, which can be written in the form of convex programming with four separable blocks in the objective function and a coupling linear equation constraint. Indeed, the directly extended ADMM, though may diverge in t…
In this paper, we propose an inexact multi-block ADMM-type first-order method for solving a class of high-dimensional convex composite conic optimization problems to moderate accuracy. The design of this method combines an inexact 2-block majorized semi-proximal ADMM and the recent advances in the inexact symmetric Gauss-Seidel (sGS) technique for solving a multi-block convex composite quadratic programming whose objective contains a nonsmooth term involving only the first block-variable. One distinctive feature of our proposed method (the sGS-imsPADMM) is that it only needs one cycle of an in…
In this paper, we study cut generating functions for conic sets. Our first main result shows that if the conic set is bounded, then cut generating functions for integer linear programs can easily be adapted to give the integer hull of the conic integer program. Then we introduce a new class of cut generating functions which are non-decreasing with respect to second-order cone. We show that, under some minor technical conditions, these functions together with integer linear programming-based functions are sufficient to yield the integer hull of intersections of conic sections in $\mathbb{R}^2$.
We offer a unified treatment of distinct measures of well-posedness for homogeneous conic systems. To that end, we introduce a distance to infeasibility based entirely on geometric considerations of the elements defining the conic system. Our approach sheds new light on and connects several well-known condition measures for conic systems, including {\em Renegar's} distance to infeasibility, the {\em Grassmannian} condition measure, a measure of the {\em most interior} solution, and other geometric measures of {\em symmetry} and of {\em depth} of the conic system.
We present a methodology for computing the flexibility index when uncertainty is characterized using multivariate Gaussian random variables. Our approach computes the flexibility index by solving a mixed-integer conic program (MICP). This methodology directly characterizes ellipsoidal sets to capture correlations in contrast to previous methodologies that employ approximations. We also show that, under a Gaussian representation, the flexibility index can be used to obtain a lower bound for the so-called stochastic flexibility index (i.e., the probability of having feasible operation). Our resu…
This paper studies disjunctive cutting planes in Mixed-Integer Conic Programming. Building on conic duality, we formulate a cut-generating conic program for separating disjunctive cuts, and investigate the impact of the normalization condition on its resolution. In particular, we show that a careful selection of normalization guarantees its solvability and conic strong duality. Then, we highlight the shortcomings of separating conic-infeasible points in an outer-approximation context, and propose conic extensions to the classical lifting and monoidal strengthening procedures. Finally, we asses…
We introduce a conic embedding condition that gives a hierarchy of cones and cone programs. This condition is satisfied by a large number of convex cones including the cone of copositive matrices, the cone of completely positive matrices, and all symmetric cones. We discuss properties of the intermediate cones and conic programs in the hierarchy. In particular, we demonstrate how this embedding condition gives rise to a family of cone programs that interpolates between LP, SOCP, and SDP. This family of $k$th order cones may be realized either as cones of $n$-by-$n$ symmetric matrices or as con…
The generalized problem of moments is a conic linear optimization problem over the convex cone of positive Borel measures with given support. It has a large variety of applications, including global optimization of polynomials and rational functions, options pricing in finance, constructing quadrature schemes for numerical integration, and distributionally robust optimization. A usual solution approach, due to J.B. Lasserre, is to approximate the convex cone of positive Borel measures by finite dimensional outer and inner conic approximations. We will review some results on these approximation…
In this paper, we mainly study one class of mixed-integer nonlinear programming problems (MINLPs) with vector conic constraint in Banach spaces. Duality theory of convex vector optimization problems applied to this class of MINLPs is deeply investigated. With the help of duality, we use the generalized Benders decomposition method to establish an algorithm for solving this MINLP. Several convergence theorems on the algorithm are also presented. The convergence theorems generalize and extend the existing results on MINLPs in finite dimension spaces.
Second-order necessary optimality conditions for nonlinear conic programming problems that depend on a single Lagrange multiplier are usually built under nondegeneracy and strict complementarity. In this paper we establish a condition of such type for two classes of nonlinear conic problems, namely semidefinite and second-order cone programming, assuming Robinson's constraint qualification and a weak constant rank-type property which are, together, strictly weaker than nondegeneracy. Our approach is done via a penalty-based strategy, which is aimed at providing strong global convergence result…
In this paper, we study a class of fractional semi-infinite polynomial programming problems involving s.o.s-convex polynomial functions. For such a problem, by a conic reformulation proposed in our previous work and the quadratic modules associated with the index set, a hierarchy of semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations can be constructed and convergent upper bounds of the optimum can be obtained. In this paper, by introducing Lasserre's measure-based representation of nonnegative polynomials on the index set to the conic reformulation, we present a new SDP relaxation method for the consi…
We introduce Newton-ADMM, a method for fast conic optimization. The basic idea is to view the residuals of consecutive iterates generated by the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) as a set of fixed point equations, and then use a nonsmooth Newton method to find a solution; we apply the basic idea to the Splitting Cone Solver (SCS), a state-of-the-art method for solving generic conic optimization problems. We demonstrate theoretically, by extending the theory of semismooth operators, that Newton-ADMM converges rapidly (i.e., quadratically) to a solution; empirically, Newton-ADMM…
